New school brings a boost to town centre By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk town centre is set for another major boost with plans to build a new state-of-the-art secondary school which will incorporate a gym and theatre. The brand new, modern facilities in the 1000-strong Pobalcolaiste Chu Chulainn will be made available for public use when the €15million VEC school will be located on a 12 acre site beside the Marshes Shopping Centre. It will boast an impressive range of facilities and services including an inhouse park, gym and theatre. The school’s founders are working from a blank canvass and will be incorporating the best educational facilities into the school building and curriculum. The thinking behind what a school needs has moved on
since the last school was built in Dundalk and Coliaste Chu Chulainn will be something truly different to what has come before according to Dr Padraig Kirk, CEO of the Louth VEC. “While we know that students will directly benefit from the school’s top class facilities, we also want to ensure that the wider community is provided with similar opportunities. The idea is to maximise the use of school facilities as much as possible and we have incorporated this objective into the design process from an early stage,” said Dr Kirk. Colaiste Chu Chulainn will boast top of the range sporting facilities that will include a full size gymnasium, changing rooms, a fitness suite, a football field and basketball courts. Dundalk gets ready for St Patrick’s Festival By Niamh Kirk
This week, across the county people are getting their ‘greens’ ready for the St Patricks Day celebrations this Sunday March 17. The National Saint’s Day celebrations in Dundalk will kick-off with the traditional parade through the town centre, starting at 1pm. Comedian Oliver Callan, bst known for his Nob Nation satires in RTE, will be leading the way as the
cultural groups and is expected to be bigger than ever. Blackrock is planning on reviving an old tradition as the Main Street will also welcome the floats and festivities in their own parade, starting later in the day. There will be a carnival atmosphere in the town centre with a carousel and range of family-friendly amusements on the Market Square. There will also be music and dancing in the town
parade’s Grand Marshal. He has already helped put Dundalk on the map with his parody of the poignant “I’m just saying”, which went viral when it was posted online last month. The ode to Dundalk has had more than 100,000 hits on Youtube. The floats and exhibitions in the parade will all be built around the theme of ‘Reviving Traditions’ and features many of the town’s community, sporting and Grand Master, Oliver Callan.
centre with live performances from the Dundalk Brass Band and almost every bar or venue in Dundalk is hosting some sort of shenanigans with a particularly strong focus on live Trad music and local musicians. An entertainment guide to the weekend has been compiled and is available from the tourist office. Sinéad Roche,
Dundalk Tourism Officer said: “The Guide highlights the abundance of live music and entertainment on offer over the festival weekend, and the commitment of local businesses to embrace festivals and events in Dundalk.” Local authorities are preparing for the in influx of up to 15,000 people into Dundalk on St Patricks Day.

A Dundalk man is looking for votes in his bid to become crowned Ireland’s friendliest butcher. Anthony Kellegher, from the Demesne, works with McArdle Meats in Clanbrassil St is asking for the support of Dundalk people in his bid to earn the title. The 27-year-old was one of hundreds of butchers from all over the country who were nominated before making it into the top 20. Voting is open until midnight Cassie Brady, Edwina Craven, Zoe Dunne, Amy Curran, Salamot Oladokun and on March 16 and those who Clarke Campbell at the Pugwash Bay pyjama day on Friday wish to give their support to Anthony can do so by visiting www. goodalls.ie.
Welcome boost for town centre
Continued from Page 1 are planning to work with local sports clubs so that their members can use the new dedicated buildings and equipment.
A 250-seat theatre for drama and musical performances will also be a feature of the new school. Again, the VEC want to ensure that the most is made from the town centre venue. They are planning on reaching out to drama groups and musicians in the town with a view to forming partnerships and seeing the best made of the space. As well as the school’s major features, the numerous classrooms and specialist rooms like the computer suites, science laboratories, technology workshops, home economics rooms and art studios will be opened up to the public for night classes. The school library will also be an impressive sight and will open up after school hours to the public. Here there are plans to develop a ‘young people’s library’ complete with all the latest technology to facilitate research and eportfolio work.
Transport issues have already been considered and the school’s authorities are working closely with the local authorities to ensure smooth running. During pre planning it was found that Dundalk already had the facilities to cope with the transport needs of the students as it has a strong public transport infrastructure. The VEC hosted a symposium this week with some of the country’s most experienced architects and designers of education spaces. However Dr Kirk is also keen to hear ideas and suggestions from the public. “My thinking is that schools are open and active from 9-4 five days a week and the rest of the time they are largely idle. “We will have state of the art facilities right in the town centre, why not open them up so the public can make the most of them.” Pobalcholáiste Chú
Chulainn will have a contractor on site by the end of the year and is due to open in September 2014. It will employ about 100 staff when operating at full capacity.

This weekend two of Dundalk best known actors Stephen Burns and Matt Murphy explore the rise, and ultimate tragic fall of Oscar Wilde. The production of the play, The Importance of Being Wilde, was adapted by Stephen Burns who along with Matt Murphy founded the Theatre Workshop in Dundalk more than 20 years ago. 2010 was the centenary of Oscar Wilde’s death in Paris where there was a huge celebration marking the life and works of the celebrated writer; and it is here that that this new production opens. The play is minimal, with two actors portraying the many protagonists in Wilde’s life as he rose to the peak of London high-society, fell from grace and ultimately imprisoned. It
Stephen Burns
features excerpts from Wilde’s most famous works but centres around the great personal joys and sorrows that befell one of Ireland’s most revered and respected men. This adaptation was first staged in Spain where Stephen has been living for the past five years. Such was the success of the production that the Viking Theatre in Dublin invited them
to run the play for a week in the popular city centre theatre. However, the producers brought their adaptation to Dundalk before taking it to the city stage. “We wanted to get some criticisms before we went to Dublin with it, you get the honest feedback from the people who know you” said Stephen. In the past five years Stephen has staged 16 plays in the Spanish resort town most of which have been by English playwrights. This was his first play for the ex-patriot audience by an Irish author. However such is reverence for Wilde’s dry wit and cutting epigrams and his fame in London and Paris, he easily appeals to any audience. The Importance of being Wilde opens in the AV Theatre Dundalk on Friday March 26 and runs for two nights. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are €10 and available on the night.
Huge pride as Store gets official launch By Niamh Kirk
Dundalk’s muchloved venue The Spirit Store was officially opened by broadcaster and author, John Kelly, last week. It proved to be a great night of celebration and not surprisingly, proprietor, Mark Dearey, was thrilled with the event and the response from customers. “The official opening marked the end of an intense redevelopment of the building and the business. It has been a difficult time but I am delighted we decided to go ahead with the project and I am proud of the facility we now have and of the additional jobs the business now supports.” The venue has been one of the pillars of the native music industry, giving emerging acts from both the area and across Ireland opportunities to play live and develop as performers.
John Kelly and Mark Dearey cut the tape
The new venue has retained the charm and intimacy of the of the quayside pub, and laid it out in a more spacious and accessible venue. The new stage and improved sound quality enhances musicians’ performances and helps establish the Spirit Store as an ideal venue from the point of view of both live music lovers and musicians alike. John Kelly is a fitting person to open the new venue as both are renowned for their sup-
port and appreciation for a wide range of styles and genres. Best known for his RTE shows The View and new arts show The Works, Kelly has also presented some of the most acclaimed radio shows like the Eclectic Ballroom and Mystery Train. “They say you should never meet your heroes. But I have to say I am delighted and honoured that John Kelly has agreed to open the venue and I am greatly looking forward to meeting
him,” said Mark. “I have been listening to his radio shows for 15 years now and still am excited at the astonishing diversity the music he plays and the musical imagination he brings to Irish radio,” he added. “The launch event gives me the chance to say a huge thank you to all those who made the venue happen. “I have been carried along by their skill and commitment since we began redeveloping,” said Mark.

The ambitious project which has just been completed was co-ordinated by Grace Costello and has just recently been published by the school. Sinead Shields who is a home school community liaison co-ordinator said there is great excitement around the school since
the book has been published. “The children are delighted to see the final product after all the work they’ve put into the book. The book is called ‘We are writers’ and every single pupil in the school has contributed something to it.” explains Sinead. “The boys have worked very hard on this project and the finished
book is a credit to each and every one of them. They should be very proud of the finished article.” she added. The book which took three months to complete is full of stories and poems and can be purchased through the school for €8. It is planned to launch the book at an upcoming book fair in the school.

Kinga Wojciechowska and Nancy Ueasukpakdee receiving their award
Students from O Fiaich College are celebrating after reaching the Regional Finals of the Transition Year Short Film Competition. The students involved Kinga Wojciechowska and Nancy Ueasukpakdee, helped put Carlingford on the map with their short film simply entitled “Carlingford. They made their video as part of their Media Studies module on their iPads using the iMovie App. Their video shows footage of historical castles and buildings, different restaurants, pubs and activities. It highlights Carlingford in a favour-
able way for The Gathering 2013. The girls were in competition with schools from Dublin, Monaghan, Meath, Louth, North Kildare and North Wicklow, with the top ten films were selected from 100 entries for this region. The films were selected in terms of creativity, originality, innovation, appeal to viewers and film editing. Among the schools selected to present to the judges were Wesley College, Sutton Park Senior School, Notre Dame Secondary School, Sancta Maria College, Portmarnock Community School and
O’Fiaich College. This was a fantastic achievement for the students involved as they had only started working with iPads in September, with one teacher commenting: “To be shortlisted for the Regional Final has not just put Carlingford on the map but also O Fiaich College Transition Year students” The students involved said “We really enjoyed making this film and hope that after people watch our video it will encourage them to come to Carlingford”. Ferdia says of the creative writing workshops: “We expected that we would have a class of around twelve or thirteen people. By the end of November over forty people had enrolled. We had to split the workshops across two days to accommodate everyone. It was an exhilarating rollercoaster ride as well as a truly stimulating and creative experience. It was also quite brilliant fun.” No Bother was the result. Come along to the launch to hear some seriously talented new writers read from their work. No Bother will be on sale and all proceeds fund the upcoming Dundalk Book Festival. Vital contribution of DkIT is highlighted The contribution being made to local education and the economy by DkIT was underlined once again this week with the publication of two reports revealing the institution’s role in the region. On Monday evening, details of DkIT’s strategic pathway and commitment to the region were unveiled at the launch of its “Socio-economic Impact Study of Dundalk Institute of Technology” and “Towards a Sustainable Future DkIT Strategic Plan (2011-2016)” by Minister of State, Fergus O’Dowd. These two critically important publications have reinforced Dundalk Institute of Technology’s commitment to education and further growth in the North Eastern Region. The “Socio-economic Impact Study of Dundalk Institute of Technology” presented the results of an assessment undertaken by BiGGAR Economics which found that Dundalk Institute of

Technology delivered a substantial annual economic return for the Irish economy, in return for the state funding received. Commenting on the findings of the study Graeme Blackett of BiGGAR Economics said, “Our research demonstrates that in 2010/11, Dundalk Institute of Technology received €37.3 million in state funding
and generated €281.5 million in Gross Value Added (GVA) for the economy of the Republic of Ireland and supported 2,110 jobs. This means that for every €1 Dundalk Institute of Technology received in state funding, it generated €7.54 in economic impact.” In tandem with the findings of the BiGGAR Report, DkIT also unveiled its “Towards a Sustainable Future DkIT Strategic Plan (2011-2016)” which includes far reaching initiatives focusing on the development of a coherent approach to supporting the education and research needs of the Dublin – Belfast Corridor and the broader North Eastern Region; and the development of the Institute’s strategic alliance with Dublin City University. President of DkIT, Denis Cummins noted in his opening remarks that, “Today’s launch is very significant to Dundalk Institute of Technology and our strategic pathway”.

Harvey Norman store to close its doors in June The local economy suffered another setback this week with the news that retail giants Harvey Norman are to close their doors for the final time this June. The Australian company will close its Dundalk branch on Monday June 17, resulting in the loss of 13 jobs although the company have stated that ’some portion of the affected employees can be redeployed within the organisation’. Blaine Callard, Chief Executive of Harvey Norman Ireland said: “It is critical that, with likefor-like sales increasing
by 8.7% with total sales also growing by 3.9% in the half year ended December 31, 2012, we continue to invest and focus on our core business. “That’s effectively our 12 full format stores and online business. Our Dundalk outlet has assisted us with clearance of distressed and excess stock which we accumulated after the downturn in 2008, but these stock levels are much lower and therefore the need for the outlet has reduced substantially. “Combined with years of high rents in this
retail park, and our new approach of clearing any future excess inventory through our normal sales floors, it has become obvious that it is not economically viable to keep the outlet store open.” “All product orders taken at the Dundalk clearance store will be fulfilled and customers who have paid for their goods and are waiting for delivery will have their orders completed in full. “A €1.4 million stock clearance sale at Dundalk has just finished – final surplus stock will be offered at
9
discounted promotional prices in the advent of the outlet closure and this will be advertised in local media and online in due course. “ he concluded Last summer Harvey Norman announced it was to concentrate on its bedding and furniture section and cease selling electronic goods. However this reformatting of the company didn’t have the desired effect and as a result they will leave Dundalk almost ten years after they first moved into the retail park on the inner relief road.

Dundalk library got into the spirit of World Book Day last Thursday as they invited two local authors to read their recently completed books for young schoolchildren in the area. “We are delighted to be celebrating the 16th World Book Day in Ireland”, stated Dundalk library’s Mary McHugh. “The main aim is to encourage people to explore the pleasure of books and get them back into the habit of reading again. “Today we are focusing on children and we have numerous events going on in the library including storytelling from two local authors.” she explained. My name is Patricia and I come from Nigeria. I moved to Ireland twelve years ago. I didn’t receive an education in my own country. The reason I came to the Adult Learning Service in Dundalk, a year ago, was to get the education that I missed out on. I have a friend who recommended the Adult Learning Service to me. My friend started there, and continued her education at DKIT (Dundalk Institute of Technology). She was a real inspiration to me and showed me what was possible. Education is very important to me, and I have always encouraged my children to do their best. My children are proud of me and they say ‘You don’t have a degree, but what you know is worth more than a degree’. I wasn’t nervous about going back to education. I knew what I wanted to achieve and I am delighted that I am on my way to achieving my goals. I go to English and Maths classes and I also see a tutor for oneto-one support with reading, writing and spelling. I would love to attend class every day, if I could! The teachers are really helpful and they put in the extra effort to make sure that all the learners understand. In our class we all support each other and there is a real friendly

atmosphere in the class. I strongly believe that if you don’t have an education it can feel like you are in a cage. It can leave you open to people taking advantage of you, or not taking you seriously. Before I started improving my literacy, I felt like I didn’t have a voice. I would love to be able to help other people who are in the same situation as I was, and to help them to find their voice. I would say to anyone thinking of taking that first step of returning to education, to be bold and make the phone call. If you would like to improve your reading or writing phone: Mary at 042 93 53591.

Failed to have drink driving charge dismissed
A man who had been charged with refusing to produce a breath sample failed in a bid to have the case against him dismissed at Dundalk District Court. Luigi Cinus, 3 The Mews, Distillery Lane, was disqualified for four years and fined €350 after being convicted at Dundalk District Court. The defendant’s solicitor, Conor MacGuill, argued that his client was not supplied with a certificate following the test which was contrary to Gardai obligations. When the evidence was heard two weeks earlier on February 21, Judge William Hamill had asked for the law to be supplied on March 6 to support this claim.
The solicitor was unable to supply that law but stated that there is a case currently being heard in the Supreme Court which might have a bearing. However, the outcome was not yet known. Judge Hamill stated that he did not want to wait for that judgment and indicated that an appeal was always possible. Mr MacGuill stated that his 38-year-old client was a single man and that the loss of his licence would be a great discomfort to him. The evidence given to the court heard that on April 19, 2011, the defendant was observed driving with no lights on The Ramparts at approximately 11pm. The car
crossed the white line and Gardai stopped the driver at Distillery Lane. He was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where Gardai stated that he refused to give a breath sample. Mr MacGuill said that the Garda said a statement that his client failed to give a sample but had told the court in direct evidence that he had refused. The Garda pointed out that the defendant didn’t make any real effort and had pretended to blow into the intoxilyser. Mr McGuill stated that a certificate was not provided to his client, but the Garda stated that in the case of a refusal, this was not required.

Eight girls compete for role of Festival Queen By Niamh Kirk
LAST week the eight fashionable young women vying for the title of the Light’s Out Festival Queen met in the Fairways hotel for the first time. Despite all competing for the top prize of a trip to sun-soaked Florida, on the murky Thursday night it was the last thing on their minds. Everyone was simply looking forward to meeting each other and raising some money for charity. Kathy O’Reilly, Hanna Lawless and Kathryn O’Hara are all fifth year students in St Vincent’s Secondary School. They got involved after Hanna was encouraged to do something fun for charity by her grandfather. “I’ve never done anything like it before, I’m a bit nervous,” said Hanna. When the girls signed up I got
involved. It will be a great girlie thing to do,” said her friend, Kathryn O’Hara. “I love getting dressed up, any excuse for me,” she said. Kathy O’Reilly, who plays with Dowdallsill GFC, said she got involved for the experience “just to do something different.” Orla McGeeney from Knockbridge is taking time from her studies in primary teaching in St Patrick’s College, Dublin to take part. Having come from a musical family, Orla plays the fiddle and says she might get toes tapping on the night. “I’m here for the experience really, and to meet new people,” she said. While some of the women have been on the stage before as dancers, singers or musicians, Charlene Carbury from Blackrock took part in the Carlingford Pearl last year. Having enjoyed the Pearl,
she took the opportunity to get involved in something similar. “I thought it would be a great way to meet more people and I’m looking forward to the big night,“ she said. Jenny Hanlon from Muchgrange, Cooley has been teaching dance with Gravity Dance School and was delighted to get involved. Her stage experience didn’t keep the nerves away but she is “delighted to get involved and do something for charity.” With the formalities over the girls got down to what they were there to do, meet and chat with each other while organiser Pasty Rodgers thanked them all for taking part. The big night on Friday March 22 has been sold out so the women will be performing to a full house as they find out on who has won a trip to Florida.

charged with operating a bar without a licence. He pleaded guilty to the offence at Mr Small’s bar, 80 Bridge St, on July 15, 2011, when he appeared at Dundalk District Court When Judge William Hamill noted that this was his second offence
of this type, he was informed that when he took over the pub it had been advertised as a fully licenced premises. However, it turned out that this was not the case and that this explanation was accepted by the court on the last occasion. This second in-
cident occurred around the same time as the previous offence. His solicitor stated that the married father of five had ceased trading and was pursuing the issue of the five year lease. Judge Hamill imposed a €200 fine.

Rotary Club invite new members By Paul Byrne
Kevin Smyth, President of the Dundalk branch of the ‘Rotary Club’, has called for new members to join up to the organisation and help serve their community with ‘commitment and distinction’. The Rotary Club is acknowledged as being the world’s first and foremost service organisation and has almost 30,000 clubs with a to-
tal membership of 1.5 million in over 165 countries. The main function of a rotary club member is to give their time to the community. Where other organisations are all about fundraising, the Rotary Club members like to give up their time and their professional skills. As well as getting involved with local projects they also have national and international commitments.
Kevin Smyth who took over from Criona O’Reilly last year says the Dundalk branch have contributed to the local community in many ways over the past number of years. “Projects undertaken locally in recent years by Dundalk Rotary Club include Meals on Wheels; youth leadership; Remembrance Tree and our fundraising morning which helped to generate much needed funds for the efforts of lo-
cal voluntary and community groups.” he explained. “International projects would include polio eradication, the provision of mobile hospital units and providing clean water supply and shelter units in response to worldwide disasters and humanitarian relief efforts. “We are currently embarking on a recruitment drive for new members aimed at re-invigorating the club and

have it continue to play a significant role in the life of our community. We have a meeting next Tuesday for anybody interested in hearing what we are all about and anybody can come along on the evening” added Kevin Members of the public are invited to attend the Rotary Information Meeting being held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tuesday March 19th commencing at 7:30pm.
Quick thinking catches burglar
A quick-thinking home owner who became concerned when he heard voices coming from a steel container on his property, locked the door before calling Gardai. As a result, Conor McLoughlin, of Cornamucklagh, Omeath, faced burglary and trespass charges at Dundalk District Court. The 32-year-old unemployed joiner pleaded guilty to the offences and had the case against him adjourned to April 17 pending a Probation Report. He was also told to pay €160 compensation. The court heard that on October 23, 2012, a man heard voices coming from a steel container and after locking it called the Gardai. McLoughlin, who has 11 previous convictions, was arrested at the scene.

the globe and Co Louth is helping to lead the way in this

Music Generation Louth The first in Music Generation Louth’s Family Concert Series takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, March 18 at 2pm in St Mary’s Church, Ardee with renowned fiddle player Zoe Conway and gifted guitarist John McIntyre. This very special musical programme for children will see the duo present a selection of beautiful traditional tunes, famous classical pieces and much more with lots of opportunity for musical participation from the audience. The Family Concert Series has been designed to inspire young children about music and give them the opportunity to hear top-class musicians perform locally. Gemma Murray, Music Generation Louth Coordinator explained, “our idea for the concert series came from talking to musicians and realising that many were inspired as a child to take up music from hearing someone brilliant play. John and Zoe are dazzling performers. They also have a really fantastic way of working and communicating with children. As parents of young children themselves they know exactly the kind of programme that will work for young audiences.” Admission to the concert is free and there is no need to pre-book, just simply turn up on the day. Doors will open at 1.30pm, half an hour before the performance starts. Music Generation Louth’s Family Concert Series is supported under the Arts Council’s Small Festivals and Events Scheme. Music Generation Louth is a music service for the county that aims to help children and young people access vocal and instrumental tuition in their local area. It is led by Co. Louth VEC and is part of Music Generation, a new national programme for music education initiated by Music Network with seed funding from U2 and the Ireland Funds. Create Louth and Co. Creative Spark celebrate funding boost By Paul Byrne
CREATIVE SPARK, Louth’s purpose built Creative Community Hub, combining training and workspace facilities with state of the art energy efficiency practices has received a welcome boost in the form of a €200,000 windfall from PEACE III. The significant funding boost will be used to develop more creative training and networking facilities for all sections of the community at the Muirhevnamor site. Sarah Daly, Manager of Louth Craftmark Limited, which initiated and led the unique Creative Spark funding application, is thrilled at the prospect of welcoming many more community groups to the creative centre: “We’ve just heard the great news and that
Sophie Coyle, Creative Spark, Ronan Dennedy, Louth County Enterprise Board, Valerie Atherton, Programme Manager Peace 111 and Sarah Daly, Creative Spark at the announcement of the €200,000 Peace 111 award to Creative Spark.
our funding application to PEACE III has been successful and I am absolutely delighted! “The Creative Spark Centre which opened last November now has the traction to develop
its community creative outreach programme long into the future. Our vision to have Creative Spark expand into a creative community hub for everyone to use and feel at home in has
been realised.” she explained A number of community learning programmes covering areas such as photography, print making, creative writing and sculpture
will now be introduced and community groups are being invited to utilise the facility for events and gatherings. Speaking at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dundalk, Council-
lor Frank Maher welcomed the news for Creative Spark as he spoke at a ‘celebration event’ to mark PEACE III’s successes across the County: “This is another fantastic example of how PEACE III and the Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership is paying off across our whole community. Louth is now a place for EVERYONE and organisations such as Creative Spark are the backbone of all we seek to do in building a more stable society for all.”

Man stole from his housemate’s bedroom
A man who broke into his housemate’s bedroom while he was on holiday and stole a dartboard appeared at Dundalk District Court to face a number of burglary charges. Darren Clarke of 2 Muholland Ave, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a number of charges and had the case against him adjourned until May 1 for a Community Service Report. The defendant admitted entering Killanny Community Centre on three occasions between December 6 and December 15, 2010 with the intention of committing a theft. He climbed up a ladder and in through a window, but nothing was taken. On April 6, 2011, he broke into his housemate’s room and took a dartboard, but this was returned. The court heard that the 20-year-old has not been in trouble since.
Join Ray for 5k—popular DJ coming to Dundalk Radio DJ Ray D’arcy is coming to Dundalk as part of the Join Ray for 5k run. This is the first time the run has come to Dundalk since it began three years ago. The aim is simple, to
improve general health. The method is to get people off the couch and run to the other side of the 5km mark. Running is inexpensive, needing no equipment
or facilities but relies on motivation; and focusing on a goal and running with others is a great way to stay upbeat. The organisers have even provided four-week

NEW SUZUKI SX4
The new Suzuki SX4 Crossover has been unveiled at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show and is the larger slibing to the current SX4 which will stay in production. The SX4 Crossover has a larger foot print than the SX4 at 4,300mm (l) x 1,765mm (w) and a 2,600mm wheelbase, the distance between front and rear occupants is 814mm and it can carry 430 litres of luggage, which is some 160 litres more than the SX4. The Suzuki SX4 Crossover is powered by the choice of either a 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engine. The 1.6-litre petrol engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission as
standard but there is the option of continuously variable transmission (CVT) transmission. The petrol model can be specified with two-wheel drive or four wheel drive. The 2WD drive models output 125 g/km with either the manual or CVT transmission and the 4WD model 136 g/km with either transmission. The 1.6-litre diesel engine is married to a 6-speed manual gearbox and is available with two-wheel drive (CO2 110 g/km) or four-wheel drive (CO2 110 g/km); the CO2 emissions figures are where the SX4 Crossover is fitted with the Auto Start Stop system. The continuously variable
transmission (CVT) has an auxiliary transmission which extends the range of gear ratios for better acceleration, hill climbing performance and fuel economy. A straight shift gate provides ease of use. Plus, a seven speed manual mode allows the driver to shift up and down using paddles without letting go of the steering wheel. The Suzuki SX4 Crossover is equipped with front; LED daytime running lamps, a colour range which includes Crystal Lime Metallic and Amethyst Grey Pearl Metallic. There is the option of a panoramic sunroof with one of the largest opening areas in its class with double sliding glass panels

Ford today has shown off their European version of the compact EcoSport SUV which should hit Irish shores early 2014. The EcoSport is built on Ford’s B-segment platform, and promises the agility and fuel efficiency of a small family car with the flexibility, spaciousness, high driving position, and go anywhere appeal of an SUV. It was developed in South America where it is already on sale but this is the European edition and is the second SUV from Ford this year, with the introduction of the new Kuga. The Ford EcoSport will be available with a number of engines which include the 125PS 1.0-litre
EcoBoost petrol engine, a 110PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, and a 90PS 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Ford EcoSport will be offered with a comprehensive package of driver assistance technologies including Electronic Stability Program and Hill Launch Assist. And will feature Ford’s SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system. The Ford SYNC AppLink system offers drivers voice control of mobile apps on the move, including music streaming services such as Spotify. Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance will directly connect the vehicle occupants to local emergency services operators after an accident.

The new Skoda Octavia goes on sale from Western Motors in Drogheda on the 21st March. There is a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines, with power outputs ranging from 105PS (1.2 TSI, 1.6 TDI CR) to 150PS for the 2.0 TDI model. The new model weighs up to 102kg lighter than the current model, so you should expect to see improved fuel and Co2 emissions. There will be an eco Greenline model later in the year, which promises 3.4L/km(83mpg) and emissions of 89 g/km from its 1.6 TDI CR 110PS engine. And should that be a bit too tame then there is an Octavia vRS engine under development. The standard equipment levels for the all new Octavia are very strong, and from the ‘SE’ on they might even be called impressive within the Octavia peers. With features like Intelligent Light Assistant (standard on Elegance) that will switch to high beam and back automatically, increasing comfort and safety in traffic. There are new touchscreen displays with proximity sensors and swiping functionality available on the higher-level systems audio and

navigation systems. Safety has been paramount in
Skoda’s plans for the Octavia with a host of safety features making their
debut Front Assistant, Driver Activity Assistant and Lane Assistant - Driver
Alert (fatigue detection) fitted as standard from SE trim level and City Emergency Braking is available on an Octavia for the first time. For example Front Assistant (standard on Elegance) does its best to avoid head-to-tail collisions by using a radar sensor integrated into the front end to continuously measure the distance to the vehicle ahead. The system reacts in up to four ways, depending on the distance detected. Should the sensors detect that a collision is inevitable, full braking force is applied. In a speed range of 4.8kph to 29kph to (3-18mph), the Front Assistant works in conjunction with the City Emergency Braking Function to bring the Octavia to a stop automatically if the driver does not react to an obstacle in the vehicle’s path. A total of 12 exterior paint finishes three solid paints in Candy White, Corrida Red, and Pacific Blue, plus none metallic options, from Topaz Brown, Race Blue, Steel Grey, Brilliant Silver, Denim Blue, Rosso Brunello, Cappuccino Beige, and Petrol Blue to Black Magic with pearl effect.
