Crisis looming after home help hours cut By Niamh Kirk
THE provision of home help in Louth is facing a crisis after it was revealed that 100,000 have been slashed from the service in the past two years. The news provides another indication of the impact of the austerity measures as it comes in the wake of revelations that local Gardai are critically under staffed. The cut in hours are understood to have a severe impact on the 1,180 people in Louth who are dependent on assistance from home help so that they can continue to live in their own homes. Figures from the HSE show that in 2010, home helpers in the county spent more than 260,000 caring for those who needed some assistance living at home. The time was cut by 50,000 hours
in 2011 and again in 2012. The figures were revealed to Louth Sinn Fein TD Gerry Adams who pointed out that the most vulnerable members of society will be affected most by the measures. “Last October the HSE revealed that there are 1184 citizens in Louth dependent upon home helps. Many of these are older citizens who rely on the home help service. “The cuts to the home help service are having a serious impact on those who need them”, added Deputy Adams. He then attacked the government policies that have led to the cuts. “It is hypocritical of TDs to praise the work of home helps and claim to understand the needs of those who use the home help service and then See Page 10

The days of Louth local authorities cleaning-up after criminal fuel smugglers could be coming to an end, after a major crackdown on fuel laundering began last week. A number of locations in north County Louth were searched last week in a dramatic sweep of sites thought to be linked to the illicit fuel trade. Helicopters were circling in the Cooley Penin-
sula area as the teams from both sides of the border began the early morning raids. The focus of the operation was on Louthbased gangs whom Gardaí believe are major players in the fuel laundering trade. Louth local authorities have been on constant alert for dumps of the toxic sludge which have increased year on year. There have been 15 incidents so far in 2013 and in the past
week alone they found a number of IBC’s in locations across the north of the country. Four IBC’s were discovered in Carnbeg off the Doylesfort Road and two more off the Armagh Road, and more in Hackballscross and Donaghmore where one was leaking the toxic material. It costs more than €1,000 per container to clean-up after these dumps and to treat the toxic sludge. Louth County Council spent
more than €2 million in the past two years cleaning up after the diesel laundering trade. While the funds are recovered through the department of the Environment the expenditure puts undue strains on cash flow, effecting services. As part of the Operation Loft a large laundering facility was uncovered in Dromore, Castleblayney, County Monaghan. It is estimated that the facility

About 40,000 litres of what is understood to be washed fuel as well as over 150 bags of bleaching agent, Bleaching Earth. It represents a loss to the Revenue of €5.5; the cost of cleaning-up the facility and treating the bi-product of
the washing process, adds significantly to the taxpayers bill. Sixteen tanks, each containing 1,000 litres of the waste product from the laundering process, and a 40ft container were also uncovered. CAB froze more than 25 bank accounts and confiscated documents, records and computers and €20k in cash.

Dumping is major health risk Twelve IBCs containing toxic materials were found in two locations in North Louth over the weekend. Ten IBCs were found on the Armagh Road on Sunday evening some of which were leaking. The IBCs were removed and the clean -up began immediately. Earlier two IBCs were found near Courtbane and were removed on the same day. Local Councillor Tomas Sharkey said that those responsible should ‘cop on’ and stop putting health and the environment at risk. “This dumping puts the environment at risk, it puts cattle and farmland in danger and it threatens

the health of our community. I am asking those responsible to take a serious look at what they are doing. It is inevitable that their actions will cause serious damage and it is only a matter of time before they are caught in the act by the authorities,” he said. “Council resources are scarce. It is getting harder and harder to secure funding to fix roads and drains across Louth. The cleanup of this dumping is costing money that is needed for other work,” he added. It costs the tax payer more than €1,000 to clean up just one dumped IBC. This weekend’s find will cost more than €12,000 to clear-up.
Pointed imitation gun at man in jest
A man who exposed himself to two women, drove dangerously on two occasions and pointed an imitation gun at a man all in the space of a week, was sentenced to three months in prison at Dundalk District Court. Peter Clarke of Tully, Corcreaghy, Dundalk, who is currently serving a five-year sentence, pleaded guilty to all charges. The 68-year-old was
also disqualified from driving for three years. The court heard that on April 4, 2011, a woman was walking along a country road when the defendant drove up behind her and starting beeping. She had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck. Two days later Mr Clarke verbally abused a man for no reason and on April 7 a driver had to take evasive action to
avoid a collision with him. On April 12 that year at 4.55pm a woman was walking to a local shop when she saw Mr Clarke standing in the middle of the road with his trousers undone. A similar offence was reported at 5.10pm that day. Gardai stopped the defendant on the same date following a complaint that the defendant had pointed the gun at another man. They found an imitation
firearm in the car. It was stated that the gun was pointed in jest. Solicitor James MacGuill stated that due to his client’s deteriorating cognitive state he has a lack of insight into his actions. He added that the offences occurred near his home and that it caused much distress for his family and victims.

Vantastival line-up announced By Niamh Kirk
Spring is in the air and in the step of Vantastival’s organisers as they announced the complete line-up for this year’s festival. Joining the likes of Damien Dempsey and Altan who were announced last month are Jerry Fish, RSAG as well as And So I Watch You From Afar. The festival has been a hothouse for the best in Irish musicians and emerging artists since it began five years ago and this year is no different. Acts like Icarus Rising, The Dead Heavys and Kodakid will no doubt impress
on the festivals intimate and exciting venues. Vantasitval has also featured some of Dundalk finest musicians and this year sees some acts that have rocked previous years making a welcome return. Funk revivalists The Trampz who are becoming a regular attraction at the festival after a number of rousing performances down the years are set to draw in the dancers once again. Third Smoke and Sophie Coyle & The Cops are also set to feature as are rock-funksters The Realm who recently
reformed for a special gig. It is full steam ahead to get the site at Bellurgan Park ready for the May Bank Holiday festival. Students going from Rags to Riches Six budding entrepreneurs from St Vincents have made their mark in the business world after making it through to the final of a national competition. The Transition Year students took part in the AIB Build a Bank Challenge where they were interviewed by personnel by AIB and chosen to run a bank in the school. The students involved were Meabh Sloane - Bank Manager, Annabelle Morris - Asst Manager, Aoife Malone - Auditor, Claire Cooney - Sales and Marketing Manager, Katie Laverty Bent Teller and Meabh O’Hanrahan - Teller. They set up and ran a branch of AIB in the school every Tuesday at lunch with the help of the AIB student officer Sheila Breen. The theme of their bank is “Rags to Riches” and they helped students to open accounts and actively encouraged them to save

The students went to the Regional Finals in Leopardstown on Thursday March 7 and were extremely successful in getting through to the National Finals which will be held in April in the RDS in Dublin.
Doesn’t consider himself a drug dealer A man who had a total of €1,500 worth of drugs to distribute among his friends, told Dundalk District Court that he didn’t consider himself a drug dealer. Emmet McGuigan of Ardaghy, Omeath, was found with a mixture of
cannabis, cannabis resin and cocaine at Omeath on November 19, 2011, resulting in him facing a total of six charges for possession of drugs and possession for purpose of sale or supply. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his
26-year-old client had no previous convictions and that because the drugs were intended for his friends that he didn’t consider himself a drug dealer. However, he accepted that he had to plead guilty. The former carpenter
and labourer is currently unemployed and although he suffers from a back complaint, he asked to be assessed for Community Service. Judge William Hamill adjourned the case until May 8 this year for a report.

It has been a very busy few days at Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara, as the Dundalk school once again made a huge effort to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge in style. The school ran a series of competitions to identify File na Seachtaine (Poet of the Week) Scríbhneoir na Seachtaine (Writer of the Week) agus Ealaíontóir na Seachtaine (Artist of the week). Prizes and certificates for which were presented at their annual Céilí Mór
which was held this year on Wednesday in the school hall. Teachers and pupils welcomed guests to the delights of a trad session in the school foyer. This event was made even more special as Mr Mc Caul, a sixth class teacher in Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara played the accordion whilst his children, pupils of Gaelscoil Róis, played mandolin, fiddle and whistle with the Soil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara group, what a treat.
Scoil Náisiúnta Réalt na Mara’s Céilí Mór has become a much anticipated and wellloved event the whole family can enjoy. With Tom the Dancer Quinn as Fear an Tí the craic and the ceol was great as three lucky students received the much coveted Tom the Dancer Quinn medals for effort and achievement Perhaps one of the most momentous awards of the evening is the presentation of the Perpetual Gradam na Gaeilge trophy. Last year’s re-
cipient, Seamas de Faoite, a first year student in The Marist Secondary School presented the trophy to this year’s proud winner, Molly O Rourke. Seamas handed over with a lovely few words of gratitude in Irish. This year’s File na Seachtaine, poet of the week was won by Oisín Cairns for his poem ‘Seachtain na Gaeilge’ and Scríbhneoir na Seachtaine , writer of the week was won by Caoimhe Nic Cormaic for her story entitled, ‘Ar an bhFeirm’.
Imposing fines doesn’t seem to work A Dundalk man was given a one month suspended prison sentence for public order offences after the judge remarked that imposing fines doesn’t seem to work. Paul Adams of 51 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, faced three public order charges arising out of an incident on March 3 at Glenmore Park.
The court heard that the defendant was shouting abuse on the street, was intoxicated and refused to give his name and address to Gardai. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that his client had no recollection of the incident and apologised. He stated that he was anxious to stay out of trouble. Judge William Hamill was told
that the defendant had 11 previous convictions and noted that he had been fined three times for public order offences but was still before the court. In convicting Mr Adams for refusing to give his name and address he imposed a €300 fine and imposed a one month prison sentence which was suspended for six months.
Locals perform well at Irish Open MAS-F recently spent the weekend in the CityWest at the Irish Open Competition. Catering for 2900 competitors from over 36 countries, it surpassed all others to become the world’s biggest Open Kickboxing Competition in the World. MAS-F had eight Junior/Cadet students entering 11 divisions between them. Ranging in age from six to 17 years, the students competed in weapons, forms and point-fighting, showing dedication and energy each time. Enda Kelly, Darren O’Donogh and Monique Martin entered the forms and weapons divisions against 250 competitors
MAS-F enjoyed a very successful event in Dublin
including World Champions from 10 countries and 3 continents. Callum O’Connor, at six years old, MAS-F’s youngest entrant fought and won his first ever fight in this competition. Conor O Murchu, Matthew McQuillan and Tomas Flanagan all fought
well up against a high standard of competition, with Lee Flanagan winning his first two rounds only to be put out in the third round. Chief Instructor Wayne Rutherford is continually humbled at the dedication and respect his students dis-
play when competing at this level. To step onto the mats at the world’s largest tournament is not an easy move, but to compete with such energy and enthusiasm, displays the joy the students get from displaying their abilities and challenging themselves.

Green fans left feeling blue By Niamh Kirk
THERE was a distinct lack of ‘Green’ on St Patrick’s Day for hundreds of disappointed revellers when a concert by UK rapper Professor Green in the Fairways Hotel was called-off at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. However, those fans who were left feeling blue will be cheered up by the fact that plans are already underway to get him back and the show is in the process of being re-
scheduled for the summer. Professor Green informally announced the show would not be going ahead via Twitter when he wrote, “And all of a sudden tonight’s gig is being rescheduled...Catch me back in Ireland another time then.” The Fairways Hotel confirmed that the show would not go on and apologised for the inconvenience caused. They automatically refunded all online ticket sales and contacted those who had bought tickets through the hotel with
instruction on how to get cash refunds. They are liaising with the musician’s team and hope the new show will take place in June, falling after the Leaving Certificate. However the announcement that a date for a new show would soon be revealed didn’t prevent angry reactions from some upset fans who took to social networks to complain. Professor Green was immediately bombarded with vitriolic abuse over the rescheduling.
He reacted angrily to the abusive tweets sent to him and responding directly to one particularly insulting jibe from an upset fan. This in turn led to the twitter user and fan of the rapper becoming the subject of online abuse too. “Too many trolls, too many trolls” Professor Green aka, Stephen Paul Manderson, later tweeted. The announcement of a new date is expected to be made soon.

Home owners see little difference in Property Tax charges By Niamh Kirk
There will no be significant differences in how much people will have to pay in Property Tax for the same size house in the county according to the Revenue Commissioners new Property Tax calculator. The Property Tax is to be based on valuations submitted by homeowners and will be 0.18% of the property’s value if it is under €1m.
An average 3 bed, 2 bathroom, semi-detached property with a garden will cost most Co Louth homeowners about €112 this year, and €225 in 2014. The tax will be similar for most home owners with the same size property regardless of location, however there is one small exception. Falling property prices in Dundalk have developed a silver lining as detached properties in the town will pay
less than anywhere else in the County. A 3 bed, 3 bathroom detached property in Ardee, Carlingford, Blackrock and in Dundalk surrounding area will cost about €157 in property tax this year and €315 in 2014. But if the same property is in Dundalk it will cost more than €50 less. The same property in Dundalk town will incur a tax of about €112 in 2013 and €225 for next year.
The Local Property Tax valuation guide was launched by the Revenue Commissioners last week. However property website Daft.ie criticised the accuracy of the online valuation system for its lack of regard for key property features like number of bedrooms, bathrooms or square meterage. The Revenue Commissioners have begun sending letters to property owners thought Ireland.

The party atmosphere on the streets was soon in full swing as radio mimic extraordinaire Oliver Callan led the parade in his role as Grand Marshal. Committee members from this year’s St Patrick’s Day committee were delighted with the turnout for the parade. “We were all very happy with how the parade went this year.
Obviously there was a lot of time put into it and it was great to see the people of Dundalk come out and enjoy the event.” “The whole point of the parade is to create a family friendly atmosphere in the town and showcase our town in a positive light.” “We were lucky with the weather as well which obviously helped and I’d like to thank the people of Dundalk who have been very supportive in bringing together community involvement and sponsorship from local businesses”, added the committee member. Blackrock residents were also in full celebration mode as they enjoyed their first ever St Patrick’s Day parade. The parade commenced at the AOH
hall at Cocklehill and according to committee member Cllr Linus English it proved a huge success. “We were absolutely delighted with how the parade panned out. We had great crowds along both sides of the promenade and we had in excess of forty floats. It was really heartening to see people supporting the event” “We were very happy with proceedings and we will definitely be back next year where I would hope we will make it bigger and better” added the councillor. The winners of this year’s St Patrick’s Day Festival awards were: Overall Winner- Friary Youth Club, Best Musical Entry- Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann Craob Dundealgan, Best

Crisis looming after cuts in home help hours
From page 1 support cuts to that service and expose vulnerable citizens to harm.” This year the HSE says that it will maintain the current level of home help which is at about 160,000 hours , Abbie Cosgrove, Maria Ivanenkiu, Suliyat Abubakar and Maxism Donelevs at but this is almost half of the time spent engaged the St Nicholas NS open day
in home care than three years ago. In 2010 the number of home help hours was 263,038; in 2011 there were 205,779; in 2012 it was down to 169,069. The news comes after Fine Gael TD Peter Fitzpatrick warned that Louth, and in particular Dundalk is critically un-
derstaffed by Gardai. Addressing minister for Justice Alan Shatter last week the Fine Gael TD said that the situation is reaching a crisis point and warned that much of the work to improve the area would be undone if the level of policing did not improve. (See page 2).
It was announced earlier this month that the funds collected in the Property Tax will be ring-fenced for the area. Eighty percent of the tax collected will be used locally while the remaining 20% will go to a communal fund for local authorities. The collection of the Household Charge may be an indicator of the compliance levels with the new tax, and as a result Louth may see a fall funding in 2014.
Tygodnie żmudnej pracy, planowania, organizowania, robótek ręcznych i szycia. Wszystko to, by z uśmiechem na ustach kroczyć ulicami naszego miasteczka podczas Parady z okazji Dnia Św. Patryka, by dumnie reprezentować nas, Polaków i nasze piękne tradycje i kulturę. Simul Polonia tworzy osiem osób, choć na codzień jesteśmy dobrze zorganizowaną grupą, z pomysłami sięgającymi gwiazd, z ogromną determinacją i entuzjazmem, by wszystkie nasze marzenia zrealizować.

Over to you QUESTION: World Book Day was celebrated recently, so what is your favourite book?
Aaron Murphy I’d have to say ‘Game of Thrones’. There are some really strong characters involved and the stories are really good.
Gerry Faulkner
Maria Horgan
That’s a question I’d need to think about for a while to give a proper answer but off the top of my head I’d probably say ‘Catch 22’. It’s just a very smart, cynical satirical novel. It’s just really well written.
My favourite book is one I read many years ago and it is called ‘The Rainmaker’. I can’t remember who wrote it (John Grisham?) but I really enjoyed it. It’s a horror story which really struck a chord with me and I’d probably count it as my favourite book.

Michael Byrne I’m a big fan of the thriller genre and I would read a lot of Jeffrey Archer and Frederick Forsyth etc. I love a book with a bit of suspense and mystery.
Lucy Dooley I’d probably go for ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ It was just a really enjoyable read. The whole series was very good and the fact the actual author of the book died around the time the books got massive added to the intrigue.

SOSAD seek volunteers for Flora mini marathon
Dundalk based suicide and prevention group SOSAD (Save Our Sons And Daughters) is seeking volunteers to take part in the Flora Women’s Mini marathon in Dublin on the 3rd June 2013. The charity is hoping volunteers will raise much needed funds on its behalf and to build awareness of the services it provides. Coordinator Davina Shortall is looking forward to this year’s event and hopes that the organisation’s successful participation over the past two years will be replicated. “An average of 120 people participated over the past couple of years on behalf of SOSAD and it was truly amazing to see such support from the local community come together to raise the
awareness of suicide”, she stated. This year the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon has introduced new rules resulting in the charity having to charge a €20 fee which includes registration, free transport, free tshirts and free entertainment after the event. SOSAD Ireland will organise everything for the entrants so just drop in to the Dundalk office and the staff will look after all. One of the new rules introduced this year is that no men are allowed to enter as there will be repercussions for the charity. The organisation relies on fundraising efforts to ensure its survival and all the work associated with the charity is carried out by volunteers. Women of all ages, representing every walk of life are
encouraged to take part. The starting point for the marathon is Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin 2 and participants can choose to walk, jog or run the 10km to the finish line at St Stephens Green. Interested entrants can call SOSAD on 9327311 to register. The closing date for entry is April 24 but please try and enter as soon as possible as the enthusiasm from ladies all over Ireland results in the marathon’s capacity being full before the closing date. If you are concerned or know anyone who is feeling down or suicidal you can contact SOSAD Ireland in 31 Williamson’s Place, Dundalk on 0429327311. For more information on the charity go to www. sosadireland.ie.

Hectic time for Ardee Concert Band March is typically a hectic month for Ardee Concert Band, with St. Patrick’s Day being the busiest day of the year, and this year is no exception. MERC CLA CLASS
AUDI A1 CoD
Details just in on the new Audi A1 1.4 TFSI Cylinder-on-Demand (CoD). The Cylinder-on-Demand models can seamlessly switch between two cylinder and four cylinders in as little as 13 milliseconds in order to minimise fuel consumption – 4.7L/100km(60.1mpg) on the combined cycle for the 1.4 140PS petrol engine. The 140PS unit is capable of 0-100km(62mph) in 7.9 seconds, so it no slouch with a top speed of 212mph. All versions of the A1 and A1 Sportback are equipped initially with the seven-speed S tronic twinclutch transmission, with manual
transmission being available later in the year. The Cylinder-on-Demand technology works using information from the throttle pedal sensors, it determines how the driver is driving, and if it detects an irregular pattern, for instance over a series of roundabouts or on a twisting A-road, it inhibits cylinder deactivation because here it would generally only be of short duration and wouldn’t save any fuel. Two-cylinder operation is also disengaged if the driver brakes, enabling all four cylinders to support braking when coasting, and if the car is travelling downhill.
Mercedes Benz have announced details about the all new CLA Class.
