Dundalk man Garry Hoey will be leading a team of amputee men in a record-breaking pursuit this May as they take part in the Limerick City marathon.

Back in 2009 while at work a car display ramp slipped and fell over, crushing Garry’s foot resulting in him being rushed to hospital where he remained for a month before a decision was made to have his right leg amputated from just below the knee joint.

Garry is now part of a relay marathon team who are taking part in the race to raise awareness for the Irish amputee football team and to raise money to hold a six nations football tournament in Limerick later on this year.

Cancer Care Centre earmarked for Dundalk Plans are afoot to put a specialist cancer support centre in place for Dundalk, and the group has come up with a novel idea to raise funds for the project.

The Cara Cancer Care Centre aim to support people and their families on their cancer journey by offering a warm, comfortable environment where advice, information, holistic therapies will be among a wide range on offer.

To start the fundraising they have come up with the idea of ‘Fun Friday Funny Feet’ where people will be asked to wear odd shoes on May 10 and donate €2.

Maria Clarke, secretary of the newly formed CARA (Irish for friend), says they are currently appealing for a house which can be used to provide the much needed service.

Family Hub hold seminar THE North Dundalk Family Support Hub which is a community based Family Support initiative, is holding a well being seminar entitled: “Give my Head Peace” on Wednesday April 24 at 10.30am in the Redeemer Resource Centre, Cox’s Demesne.

Speakers will include John Lonergan former governor of Mountjoy Prison and a selection of local speakers who will talk about positive life

solutions in the area of Mental Health.

There also will be a number of stalls and information points who will provide advice and information on the day to all participants.

A woman who has admitted hitting rock bottom was warned that her daughter and grandchild face following in her footsteps if she does not mend her ways.

Natalie Dullaghan of 37 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was given the stark warning by Judge Flann Brennan at Dun-

dalk District Court after she pleaded guilty to theft.

The court was told that the mother of four has been given a number of chances but has suffered setbacks in her drug taking. She has been in contact with Turas addiction counselling service and realises she needs help.

Two local charities, Special Needs Active Parents (SNAP) and Simon are set to benefit from the Dundalk FM Radiothon which took place over the weekend.

For 36 hours nonstop, more than 36

presenters were on air, raising funds to keep the station going and to support local charities.

The community radio station hosted a 36 hour long breakfast show, interviewing people all over the world when it was breakfast in their time zone.

“We’re doing this because we want to raise awareness for the Irish amputee football team and to try and raise a few euro to help with the costs of running the Paddy Power Amputee Six Nations Cup which is being held in Limerick in August.

“I’ve been playing with the team since last December and I absolutely love it.

“I’ve played with Ireland twice this year and we are hoping that the team will be competing in the Amputee World Cup in Mexico next year.

“We train down in Ballymun every

Wednesday and it’s just great to be back out on the pitch again competing. My fitness levels have improved so much since I started playing and I’ve made lots of new friends as well.

“I used to love playing football and would have played with Demesne Celtic in the Dundalk Summer League a few years ago.

Obviously when I had my accident I thought that my days on the football pitch had finished but thankfully it hasn’t turned out that way.” says Garry.

Garry has been training hard for this next month’s marathon and admits he’s been getting a few strange looks

from passing motorists as he runs around the Dundalk roads on his crutches.

“Cars tend to stop and ask me if I’m ok when they see me out on the roads.

“When I tell them that I’m out training for the Great Limerick Run marathon relay I get a few strange looks”, laughed Garry.

Garry’s Limerick marathon world record attempts takes place on May 5 and anybody who wishes to sponsor Garry and his team can do so by contacting Garry himself at 0876496711 or through the Irish Amputee Football Association’s My Charity.ie page.

Missing person appeal

Gardai are appealing to the public to help them as they try to find a missing girl.

Seventeen year old Naolmai Whittington from Ardee was last seen in the Tallanstown area.

She is described as 5ft 6 in tall, small build, green eyes and has dyed orange hair that is shaved at the sides with designs. She was last seen wearing black tights, kaki shorts and a blue Back Sabbath T-shirt, navy hoodie and navy NY Baseball cap with Converse boots. The second Patsy Kelly 5K run proved once again to be a hugely successful event with 517 runners, joggers and walkers taking part on what proved to be a perfect spring evening.

The event which was put together by Clan na Gael GAA club and North East Runners was organised as a tribute to well known ‘Clan’ Patsy Kelly, an avid road runner who tragically passed away in 2010 whilst out jogging.

The route started at the top of the Ecco Rd turning right onto the Castletown Rd through O’Hanlon Park ad Ice House Hill before turning right again down the Ecco Road and finishing at the Clan na Gael Clubrooms.

All proceeds were donated to the local SOSAD organisation a free service dedicated to helping all people who might be considering suicide, suffering from depression or bereaved by suicide.

Maurice Harrison, for the Clans club, was delighted with how smoothly the race ran and thanked everybody who helped make the event such a success.

“So many people were involved in the organisation of the race from members of the North East Runners, to the Kelly family, to all the 65 stewards who volunteered their time, to the Clans women preparing all the food, we are all extremely grateful to them all.”

said Maurice “A big mention also has to go to Paul Gray who put in a Trojan amount of work to ensure that this race was a success.” added Maurice.

“Most importantly I’d like to thank each and every person who turned up and I sincerely hope we will see everybody back here next year.

The crowds came out in force and lined the route from Oakland Park, Fr Murray Park

and right up to the Carrick Road.”

The overall winner of the Patsy Kelly was local running legend Gary O’Hanlon who won with a course record of 15:09. The first lady to complete the course was Aoife Talty who crossed the line in 16:46 also a record. Adrian McGlynn was the first Clan home while the winner of the over 60 age category was won

by Patsy Fitzsimons in a time of 20:46.

First ever schools triathlon Mother of two

Last week in Drumcar, 12 Louth secondary school took part in the very first Transition Year Triathlon.

PE teachers network, An Garda Síochána, Louth Local Sports Partnership and St Mary’s Drumcar joined forces to put the event together.

The event had the contestants put up 16:32 against each other in a race which consisted of a 200m indoor swim, a 9km cycle through the Drumcar and Togher and a 3km run at which point the runners were met by a huge group of cheering students and teachers alike.

Over 250 students from the 12 schools took part in the event and everyone seemed to be happy with how they performed.

The winners of the males were in first was Cormac Jones (Dundalk Grammar) second went to Conall Kelly (De La Salle) and in third place

was Darragh Shevlin (Scoil Ui Mhuiri) The winners of the females were in first was Ciara Fay (Dundalk Grammar) second place went to Caitlin Ní Chonbuirn (Bush) and third place went to Niamh Murray (Scoil Uí Mhuirí) Team winners

were De La Salle, in second was Dundalk Grammar and in third place was Bush.

In the end Dundalk Grammar School took the prize of the overall Best School back with the cup for the second time.

All school involved were very pleased with the results.

A 35-year-old mother of two died following a crash just outside Dunleer on Sunday night.

Linda Bray of Gort Nua, Castlebellingham, was involved in a twocar collision at 10.15pm at Castletown, Dunleer.

She was the only occupant in the car.

The only occupant of the other car was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with serious injuries.

Finbarr Markey of St Fursey’s Tce, Blackrock, was among a crowd that had gathered while Gardai were supervising a house eviction by the County Sheriff.

While the owner was leaving he told him to stand his ground and he attempted

to get into the property.

He was asked to leave

by Gardai and when he refused, he was arrested.

Inspector Martin Beggy stated that the defendant had no rights to the property and his intervention caused difficulties.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his 37-year-old client accepted his guilt on the charge which arose from a remark he made during the incident.

He said the defendant, who had no ulterior motive, is a highly educated community worker who contributes a lot to the people in his community.

Judge Flann Brennan said that he would deal with the case as an isolated incident and applied the Probation Act in view of his guilty plea and previous good record.

He warned Mr Markey not to behave like this again.

Tesco gets ready for exciting new store When the Dundalk Shopping Centre first opened in 1974 it was a trail blazer. As an entirely enclosed shopping centre, it was one of the first of its kind in Ireland and now Tesco Ireland is continuing that tradition as works begins on their redevelopment of the local landmark on the Dublin Road.

Michel Sullivan who has worked on the project with Tesco since its inception says that the new shopping centre will also be unique in its own way as one of the most up to date retail outlets in the country. “It will be really beautiful, I’m very excited about seeing it come to fruition,” he said.

Working from blank sheet and with years of retail expertise behind them, it will be a real flagship for Tesco said Mr Sullivan. It could be good news for retail in general in Dundalk as Mr Sullivan believes that it will also encourage more footfall in the town centre.

Work on the project will

begin in the coming weeks.

A lot of preparation on the site must be done before construction can begin but Mr Sullivan says they expect the Shopping Centre to open in the summer of 2014.

In the mean time, Tesco will continue trading on the site in a scaled down outlet.

The store currently employs

about 100 people but the new store expects to employ 200, creating 100 jobs in the town.

Tesco Ireland announced plans to redevelop the Dundalk Shopping Centre in 2010 at an estimated to cost of €33 million. It will include a two storey building, with three retail units and parking for more than 500 cars.

Local trio to represent Ireland

Crosscause – to nazwa organizacji charytatywnej założonej przez wspaniałego człowieka, lokalnego filantropa, Conora Hughes. Organizacja zajmuje się dwoma projektami, w których skład wchodzą: - Szkoła i Dom Wspólnoty w Afryce Zachodniej, - Domy i przedszkole dla dzieci w Rumunii.

Współpracując z Conorem od lutego 2012 roku, pomagając w prowadzeniu sklepu w Blackrock, załadunku TIRów z darami, przygotowywaniu i prowadzeniu imprez kulturalnych i gromadzeniu funduszy, mieliśmy okazję poznać się lepiej i przekonać, iż nasze ideały nie różnią się zbytnio od siebie.

Dlatego też, kiedy rozmawiałem z Conorem o przyszłych projektach, wpadliśmy na pomysł zrealizowania zbiórki pieniedzy pt. Bag Packing Day. Polega to na tym, że przez cały dzień jeden z supermarketów daje nam do dyspozycji swoje kasy, gdzie wolontariusze pomagają kupującym pakować nabyte towary.

Szukając supermarketu, który udostępni nam miejsce, udałem się do Long Walk Shoping Centre, gdzie, ku mojej radości, dostaliśmy od kierownictwa w Tesco zezwolenie na przeprowadzenie tej akcji i to przez 2 dni! Data została ustalona na 5-6 kwietnia br.

Jedynym problemem dla Conora był brak zasobów ludzkich. Z racji tego, że z doświadczenia wiem, iż większość Polaków współpracująca z Simul Polonia ma wielkie serce i dużo chęci do pomocy, zaoferowałem Conorowi, iż popytam wśród lokalnej Polonii.

Included are four competitors who will represent Ireland

MAS-F Juniors Monique Martin and Enda Kelly, and Cadets Darren O’Donogh and Tomás Flanagan represented their club and town on Sunday April 14 at the KickBoxing Ireland/ WAKO Irish National Championsips in City West.

This competition allows the top martial artists in the country to compete for the highest accolade in Kickboxing in Ireland - The KBI/ WAKO Championship title, where only the top two students in each division, represent Ireland at the most prestigious tournament in Europe.

Current National Champion, Darren O’Donogh, entered the younger cadet division for forms and weapons.

Up against competition

from several counties he dominated to win two gold medals and places for both sections on the Irish National Kickboxing Team.

Darren then donned his sparring gear and in a very close semi-final obtained a bronze in continuous sparring and a ranking of third in Ireland.

Tomás Flanagan sparred in the continuous section for older cadets.

Winning his semi-final by a unanimous decision, he competed in a high paced final against his opponent. Tomás achieved a silver medal and a ranking of second in Ireland, giving him a place on the cadet team also.

In the Junior division, World Bronze medalist Monique Martin took the gold and the Irish Na-

tional Title for weapons and a place on the junior team for the Europeans in September. Monique then swapped the sword for sparring gear and won a silver medal.

Enda Kelly who recently won gold in the Senior weapons division, entered his final National Junior competition and secured the final Gold for MAS-F and another national title for himself. Enda also gained a coveted spot on the Irish Kickboxing team.

All four students have done themselves and their club proud and will now begin the arduous task of fundraising for the European Championships. The road to the Europeans costs approximately €1,100 per student and demands rigorous training.

Three Gardai are injured during arrest A man who took exception to be arrested, lashed out at Gardai resulting in three officers being injured.

As a result, 19-year-old Michael Murden, 529 Aisling Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he was sentenced to 10 month after pleading guilty to assault.

The court heard that on February 27 this year, the defendant was being arrested on foot of a bench warrant but resisted. He lashed out at the Gardai, thumping and kicking one officer who suffered a sore back and kidney difficulties as a result.

The same officer was assaulted again at the station and had to attend hospital.

Another Garda suffered ligament damage to her hand and has been out of work since.

A third Garda was also assaulted

and although he was sore afterwards, he did not require medical attention.

Mr Murden also faced charges in respect of an incident on October 3 outside the courthouse when he was being transferred to a prison van.

When it was suspected that he was concealing something, Gardai attempted to search him but he resisted and had to be restrained. A Garda suffered minor injuries to his hand.

Solicitor for the defendant stated that his client, who is currently serving a nine month sentence, apologised to Gardai after the incidents. He was in a highly agitated state at the time and added the behaviour was inexcusable and that he was ashamed of himself.

“He has had a problem with drink and drugs but is drug free in prison and is doing well. He has the support of his family.

Man thanks Gardai for arresting him

A man who was found wandering around in a field in the early hours of the morning believes that Gardai did him a favour by arresting him.

Enda McKevitt of Proleek, Ravensdale, initially resisted arrest and headbutted a Garda, but despite his actions leading to a court appearance, on reflection believes it was the best thing that could have happened.

The court heard that on May 4, 2012, Gardai discovered a vehicle abandoned at Hackballscross and on investigation discovered the defendant in a field at 5am. He was very drunk and disorientat-

ed. When Gardai tried to restrain him, he headbutted an officer and made a second attempt before being taken to the station.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated if Gardai had not come across his 25-year-old client, his safety would have been at risk.

“Being found by Gardai was the best thing that could have happened. He had been out at a nightclub and can’t remember how he got to a field in Hackballscross, which is nowhere near his home.

“When the doctor was called he was found to be in a hallucinatory state. He is lucky the Gardai

came across him as his safety was in jeopardy.

“He apologises to Gardai and also thanks them as otherwise he doesn’t know what would have happened him”, added Mr McDonnell.

Judge Flann Brennan accepted a contribution of €500 into the Court Poor Box before finding the facts proven and dismissed the case, but warned the defendant not to act like this again.

“I don’t know what went on, but don’t ever misbehave like this again. Headbutting is a particularly cowardly activity in my book”, stated the judge.

A team of students from Dundalk IT has won third place in the final of the Health and Safety Authority’s first ‘Occupational Safety and Health in Healthcare’ competition aimed at nursing undergraduates across Higher Education. Faughart NS clean up with another Green Flag The environmentally conscious pupils in Faughart National School were delighted to see their second Green Flag raised on the same day as their Annual Spring Clean.

On Saturday morning the pupils and parents were up bright and early to spruce up the roads and amenities around the school.

A Ravensdale resident who has been burgled for the second time in the space of three years has appealed for any information as to the whereabouts of the stolen goods.

Dympna McKenna returned to her home on Saturday afternoon March 23 this year to find the patio doors smashed in and thousands of euro worth of goods stolen.

Flatscreen TVs, laptops, an iPad, Playstation and a Blackberry phone were amongst the items taken by the robbers.

“We got back home at about 3pm on Saturday to find the fence knocked over and the patio door smashed. We knew straight away we’d been burgled as we had the same thing happen to us three years previously.

“I am still very upset about the whole incident and it is absolutely

soul destroying to see the destruction these people inflicted on us.

“I was told that a number of cars were broken into on the same day in Ravensdale so I’m guessing the incidents are probably connected.

“My son is only 11 years old and he’s heartbroken as they took his brand new Playstation and his Wii. These people never seem to think of the destruction they leave in their wake.

Bikes and cakes Event held to mark establishment of Coláiste Lú at a very busy Realt na Mara

Thursday morning was a typically busy one in Réalt na Mara school with the annual cake sale taking place in the school hall as well as a ‘Safety on Bikes’ lesson in the yard.

According to Paul Leonard from the parents association the annual cake sale proved a great success helping to raise over €1,065 for the school.

“We were delighted to raise over a thousand euro for the school and thank all the parents and children for making it such a resounding success.

Compliments were flowing in regarding the quality of the baking so all those who helped out out there take a well-deserved bow. The money raised will be put to great use in the school.” explained Paul.

School principal Mary Hession thanked all those who had helped raise money for the school.

“On behalf of the school I’d like to say a huge thank you to the parents association for raising the money to make this possible.” she stated.

Safety was also on the agenda on Thursday in the school with children from 4th to 6th class being taught the values of safe cycling.

Qualified instructors Mary Kelly and Maria Quinn were on hand to teach the children the basic principles of cycling safety in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The classes which were run in conjunction with ‘Pedal Right’ and Go Dundalk aim to encourage children to get on their bikes whilst teaching them to cycle safe.

Dundalk Institute of Technology will be hosting its annual School of Business and Humanities Active Citizenship night on April 25 to recognise honour and encourage the contributions made to the local community by the Business and Humanities students of DkIT. The evening will be filled with a number of events that will include presentations of cheques to various local and national charities such as The Simon Community, SOSAD, the Irish Cancer Society and the Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre among others.

Despite the current economic difficulties faced by students, they have managed to raise significant sums of money for charities across Ireland. In addition to raising money for local charities, this year DkIT Public Relations students also provided ‘pro bono’ work for local charities through their course work.

“It is refreshing to see young students working so hard to raise funds for local charities, for without these much needed funds our work would be extremely difficult if not impossible,” said Elaine Gillespie from the Irish Cancer Society.

At the end of the evening DkIT president, Dennis Cummins will present the Active Citizenship award to a student that has shown commitment to the community as well as excelling academically during the year.

LSPCA open new animal shelter

After two years hard work by countless local volunteers, the animal shelter for Louth Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LSPCA), ‘The InnBetween’ was officially opened last weekend by Linda Martin.

LSPCA officer Fiona Squibb praised the work of the volunteers who helped out over the past two years. They said it was impossible to count how many people turned out to help as there were so many who were so kind.

Without them the project would not have been possible, particularly the trades people whose skills were required to ensure the kennels and cattery were of the best quality.

Committee members were delighted with the shelter in Haggardstown and said it is a huge improvement.

Some admitted that they had resisted the idea when it was first presented to them, but now are very happy to have been wrong.

Fiona had a hard time convincing people that the new shelter was not only necessary, but achievable.

They hit a financial stumbling block and feared that the sanctuary may not be completed.

Fiona Squibb also praised the people who keep the sanctuary running day to day, to feed, exercise and entertain the animals there.

“There are some who are particularly dedicated, they are here every morning, in the most awful weather,” she said.

the shelter. She got her Chihuahua, Chilli Willy, though the LSPCA four years ago.

She commended the attention paid not just to animals but also to people around them, making sure that a dog finds the right home.

“Not everyone has a family, for so many, an animal is there companion. Tell everyone what a good thing this is,” she said.

There is always someone at the sanctuary, in Haggradstown so there are no excuses for dumping animal instead of handing them over if they cannot be kept.

Drink drive suspects claims he needed more information A Clogherhead man attempted who was charged with drink driving attempted to have the charges against him struck out by claiming that he was not given sufficient information by investigating Gardai.

Mark Mulroy, 58 Gort Uaine, Clogherhead, was stopped by Gardai at 1.05am on February 7, 2012, after being observed using a mobile phone.

After Gardai noticed a strong smell of alcohol and slurred speech, the defendant was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station.

A doctor was unable to attend to take a sample the breath test was conducted on an evidencer, which showed that Mr Mulroy was over the limit for driving.

Gardai were obliged to provide “objective justification”, such as saying observation was required in conjunction with the manufacturer’s guidance or under best international practice.

He argued that as this had not been done, it followed that his client’s detention was unlawful.

Inspector Martin Beggy stated that there is nothing in the legislation to say that Gardai have to elaborate on the reason for 20 minute observation.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that he would not be making a decision until he looked carefully at previous judgements in previous cases and the implications of the State’s evidence.

The case was adjourned until May 15.

A day of special events is lined up to commemorate the life of Davy McCoy, the former Louth and St Mary’s footballer.

Davy passed away last December after a short illness. His friends made a promise to Davy to have a day to remember to celebrate his memory. So in his honour a day of special events has been lined up to help raise funds for the Ardee Hospice Homecare.

The day’s activities include a 40k cycle, a 5k fun run, walk and a Football Legends tournament as well as a host of other entertainment. All the

activities will start from Davy’s beloved Ardee St Mary’s GAA Club.

activities,” Vinny McCoy who is part of a committee of Davy’s friends and family who have come together to organise this celebration.

He said he was bowled over by the response from the community who have come together to get behind the celebration. ““It will be one of the great days in Ardee,” said Vinny.

The 40k cycle is open to all and will be supervised by Ardee Cycling Club.

Registration is at 11am, with the event starting at Noon.

District Athletic Club and will be an ideal warm-up for those taking part in the Boyne 10k that weekend.

Registration is from 1pm onwards with the fun run or walk beginning at 2.30 and, again, all are welcome.

Many familiar faces from the past will be lining out in the Football Legends match at 5.30pm which will feature a host of St Mary’s and Louth heroes through the years.

There will be music, entertainment and festivities for all the family throughout the day and into the evening.

Novel project helps generations learn from each other

For the last few months students from VEC schools (Scoil Uí Mhuiri, St Oliver Community School, O Fiaich College and Bush Post-Primary School) have been taking part in a course in Dundalk Institute of Technology called SANDPiT. This is an inter generational project which has been launched in DkIT. These students in Transition Year are working with members of Great Northern Haven to design software for

smartphones which will appeal to the two generations.

The students are mixed into groups and placed along with elderly citizens and so far they are on the verge of creating the software.

The idea of the whole course is to teach the two generations that the modern world has a place for people of all ages and that technology shouldn’t put up a wall between itself and anyone.

Great North Haven is a development in Dundalk which has 16 ‘Smart Apartments’ c o n s t r u c t e d

specifically for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) application.

Fifteen of these apartments are occupied by older residents.

One student, who is taking part in the course, said, “it is a great learning experience in both technology and understanding our elders”.

He and three other student along with a participant of the Great North Haven project are designing a quiz app which will feature a huge range of categories.

But due to unforeseen circumstances the Lock –Up stage which housed much of the local talent, will not be returning to the festival this year. The cancellation of the stage was announced late last week but the Lock-Up organisers are already planning to reschedule the performances for an event in June.

The announcement read “The Lock-Up stage has been proud to be part of all previous Vantastival’s but we are very disappointed to announce that we are cancelling our stages’ appearance. Due to unfortunate circumstances the Lock-Up stage will not be appearing at this year’s Vantastival in Bellurgan Park.”

“We sincerely apologise to everyone who was looking forward to checking out the 15 bands and 25 DJs scheduled to appear on our stage.”

The Festival organisers have said that they will continue to support local acts and that more information will be available soon.

More diesel sludge found in Louth Despite the continuing crackdown on diesel laundering in the area, gangs are continuing to make a quick buck from the illegal fuel trade.

Two IBCs, the large plastic containers used to hold the toxic bi-product from the process of washing the dye from the fuel, were found dumped at Lacknagreagh. A third was found at Courtbane on April 18.

Students ready for national finals It’s a project that has changed the lives of thousands of young engineers around the world and now on April 30, six students from the Grammar School are at its final stage, hoping to earn the opportunity of a lifetime to represent Ireland at the F1 In Schools World Finals this November.

Erin Maguire, the leader of Infinity F1, Dundalk Grammar School’s F1 Team for 2012/13 season explained just how much is has meant to those taking part.

“It has been a life changing experience, never did I think this kind of project would revolutionise my life. I went from being that quiet little girl, who kept to myself, to this 16 year old business

Infinity F1 has been very successful since they were first formed back in August, they have progressed from 5 Page Plan stage to Regional Finals and now on to the National Finals, they’ve had to go up against hundreds of other students from around the country all fighting for the once in a lifetime opportunity.

It is the responsibility of Louth County Council to clean up after these dumps, placing increased strain on already stretched finances. The illicit fuel trade poses a threat to the environment, causes thousands of euro worth of damage to cars, and means the state coffers are down hundreds of millions of euro every year.

Drove at 188kph on motorway A man who was travelling on the M1 motorway at 188kph escaped a driving ban after being convicted of careless driving.

Cornelius Clarke of 4 Ferryhill Road, Newry, was also fined €350 at Dundalk District Court and warned that he would be disqualified if he ever drove at that speed again.

The 30-year-old father of four admitted the offence at Drumaleck, Castlebellingham on November 12 last year and his solicitor, Conor Breen, stated that he apolo-

He added that Mr Clarke was late for a meeting on the date and that driving conditions had been good.

Danger of Radon gas outlined to householders Two public meetings about the dangers of exposure to radon gas were held in Dundalk and Carlingford this week. The meetings were part of a wider campaign by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII), to urge people in Louth to test their homes for the presence of the cancer-causing gas, radon.

The RPII’s campaign is to persuade the people of Louth to ‘Take the Radon Test’. As

part of that campaign every home in Louth has received an information pack with their post outlining the dangers of the cancer-causing gas, radon. Louth’s TDs, senators and councillors have being briefed on the issue.

Radon, a radioactive, odourless, invisible and tasteless gas is the second biggest cause of lung cancer after smoking and is linked to up to 200 lung cancer deaths each year in Ireland.

Speaking at the public meeting in Dundalk Councillor Mark Dearey said: “Only by taking the radon test can you be certain of the level of exposure.”

Speaking at the meeting in Carlingford, Councillor Peter Savage said: “I welcome the RPII’s campaign in County Louth. Much of the Cooley peninsula is a high risk area which is why the RPII recommends that all householders get their homes tested.”

A number of service providers provide a radon measurement service. The cost of a measurement is around €50 depending on which service provider is chosen and includes postage.

If radon reduction is required there are two straightforward methods commonly used. If a moderate radon level is found, improving indoor ventilation may be sufficient and the cost of this is relatively low.

If higher levels are found, a fan assisted sump can be installed which can reduce radon levels by over 90%.

The sump can be installed in a day by a contractor with little disruption to the home.

The typical cost of this work is €1,100 with the fan costing approximately €90 per year to run.

An interactive map is available on the RPII’s website (www.rpii.ie) so that anyone can search for their

address or nearest town to see whether their home or workplace is in a High Radon Area.

On the website, they can also find out what they need to know about radon – what it is, why it is a problem and how they can have a measurement made.

Boost for Lourdes Fund

A local group that organises pilgrimages to Lourdes received an unexpected boost at Dundalk District Court when a donation of €2,000 was made to the Faughart Lourdes Committee. Shop owner, Declan McEneaney, 17 Elm Grove, Bay Estated, Dundalk, made the donation to the Court Poor Box after pleading guilty to a charge of selling drink to a minor and in doing so avoided a conviction.

The incident on April 12 last year was part of a test purchase case, supervised by a Garda. In handing over the money, the defendant’s solicitor asked that it be paid to the Faughart Lourdes Committee.

Dacia have launched their new Logan MCV (Multi Capacity Vehicle). The Logan MCV is capable of carrying 575 litres of luggage with all the seats in place – when you lower the 60/40 split rear seats this increases to a very respectable 1,518 litres which is more than the Skoda Fabia Estate.

The Logan MCV has a choice of three engines, the entry level engine is as with all the engines from the Renault Group, and it is the petrol 1.2 16V 75 bhp unit which can deliver on the official combined cycle 5.8L/100km(48.7mpg)

with 135 g/km on the emissions front.

There another petrol unit the TCe 90 which features in the Renault Clio, the 0.9-litre three-cylinder turbocharged unit is capable of 175kph(109mph), with fuel economy of 5L/100km(56.5mpg) and CO2 emissions of 116 g/km. If you prefer a diesel there is the dCi 90, a 1.5 litre engine capable of 3.8L/100km(74.3mpg) on the official combined cycle and CO2 emissions are rated under 100 g/km.

are 15” ‘Kalahari’ wheel trims, chrome front grille, front fog lights, body-coloured door handles and door mirrors and satin chrome roof bars.

You can add navigation to the Lauréate – which includes an AM/ FM/LW radio, satellite

navigation, USB and AUX connectivity, Bluetooth and steering column-mounted fingertip controls. Should you wish you can also add leather to the interior and parking sensors.

The new Forester has a larger footprint than its predecessor, it is 2mm taller, 15mm wider, and 35mm longer, with a 25mm longer wheelbase which equates to more cabin space and cargo carrying capability.
