Sarah is the new Louth Rose
By Paul Byrne
Louth runners left their mark on the Great Limerick run last Sunday with Gary O’Hanlon, Garry Hoey and Collette O’Hagan all representing the county with pride. Kilkerley’s Gary O’Hanlon was in unstoppable form as he powered past all his rivals to win the men’s race by an impressive six minutes finishing with a time of 2:29 and 44 seconds. Gary, who has been in fine form, this year said he was happy to win the race and has set a target of beating his personal best by the end of the year. “It was a pretty tactical race and because of that it was a fairly slow time. There was a runner in the field who had run 2:24 recently so I just followed him for the first half

of the race. When he started to tire I knew the race was there for me and I didn’t really over extend myself for the remainder of the race.” explained Gary.
“I’m running Kildare marathon next and I’m hoping to beat my personal best of 2:26. I’m in good form at the minute and enjoying my running so hopefully I can get a
decent time before the years out”, he added. Meanwhile Garry Hoey put in a tremendous effort as part of the Irish Amputee reContinued on Page 9

Dundalk has once again been ranked last in the most recent Gateway Report which measures the success of the towns and cities that have been designated ‘Gateway Status’. The status is granted based on the areas ability to be drivers of regional economic development. Dundalk was also in last place when tested in 2009 when it received 4.5. It improved by only .1 taking the grade for 2012 to 4.6. The leading town and cities are Sligo, Cork, Dublin and Galway which all ranked above 5. The assessment looked at indicators

of achievement cross a broad range and including population, enterprise, environment, economic, employment and social factors. In particular the area scored poorly when it came to deprivation issues. It says that Dundalk has produced a high rating and has the highest deprivation rates across the nine gateway towns. “This, plus the fact that our unemployment rate at 24.19% is significantly above the average for the Gateways, highlights the need for continued force for further jobs to be created in this region,” said Paddy
Malone, President of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce. The figure represents a 14% increase in unemployment since 2006, and is 5% higher than the other gateway unemployment rates. The report also highlights IT infrastructural issues like comparatively slow broadband, despite the 44% increase in usage out. Mr Malone said that he noted that Louth County Council is actively raising this matter with the Broadband providers and says he would be hopeful that this will be resolved. The Dundalk Gateway is however performing well on the
environmental front. The Natural and Physical Environment was viewed positively as the results for river water quality and drinking water infrastructure were largely positive, particularly when compared against others in the border region. Some changes are already on the horizon in response to the separate CCMA report released last week. Louth County Manager Joan Martin detailed how the The Louth County Enterprise Board is to be replaced with the Local Enterprise Offices in the coming months. “They will act as one-stop shops to deliver enterprise sup-
ports through the local government system,” she said. However, the report did highlight some potential challenges in the future as the young population of the area increases. Over the past four years there has been a lower than average population rise of 9.77%.
“The changes in population and the higher than average increase in youth population clearly indicates a need for greater investment in education and training. “The new schools announced recently will address this issue in part only,” said Mr Malone.

Dundalk Leader reporter, Paul Byrne, spent a week volunteering with Crosscause in Romania. Here he highlights the important work being carried out.
Simona illustrates true value of Crosscause Sunday April 21 was a very special day at Casa Brigid in South East Romania. It was exactly ten years since the doors opened and Blackrock based charity ‘Crosscause’ welcomed their very first residents; Claudia, Nela, Alina and Mihaela to start their new lives. Ten years since their lives changed forever and the start of the foundations amazing work throughout the community. Today Casa Bridget houses 16 residents who are all looked after in a safe and loving environment a million miles away from where they started out. One of these residents is called Simona. Simona who has Downs Syndrome lived with her sick mother in destitute circumstances on the edge of Nicoresti close to where Casa Bridget is located. Due to her mother’s illness Simona wasn’t receiving the care she needed and
had highlighted Simona’s plight and ensured that Simona would be looked after by the charity. “Pauline Walsh who was one of the driving forces of Crosscause ran the project over there until she came back to Ireland a couple of years ago. She had seen the awful conditions Simona was forced to live in and he really wanted to help her out. She started a regime
where we went down to the house every day to give her a shower, new clothes and a meal.” explains Conor. “Then Simona started to come down to Casa Bridget a couple of days a week to mix with other people and little by little she got used to the place and wanted to stay. As her mother’s illness became progressively worse she was very happy to see Simona brought into care.
“That was about three years ago and she has been living with us permanently for the last six months.” adds Conor. Today Simona is a completely different child to the one which Conor and Ciaran first came across. She has started to verbalise and her social skills have improved immensely. Conor says that she is ‘an intelligent wee lassie and is one of the real success stories for Crosscause.” “Simona is probably the manifestation of what we do at Casa Bridget. We have gradually brought her on and she has become a permanent resident and loves it here. It has been great to see the complete change in her personality and to see her happily playing with other kids” concluded Conor. Simona is just one of the hundreds of people whose lives have been improved immeasurable thanks to the work of Crosscause.
to the Casa Bridget where they look after the project on a full time basis. “Casa Ion is our family home where we live with our five children.” said Ionel. “Casa Ion was constructed in 2008 specifically for three local children, recently orphaned and sent to the state “Placement Centre” where they were misera-
ble. “After a year of difficult negotiations, red tape and court cases, in 2009 they were finally allowed to join myself and Claire in our new home. We have two children of our own as well so we now have five children who are enjoying the benefits of living in a big, loving family. All the good things in my life have
come through Crosscause and I am eternally grateful for all the help they have given me over the past ten years.” smiles Ionel. There will be an open/ info day in the garden of the Crosscause charity shop in Blackrock this Sunday between 2 and 6 for anybody who wants to find out a bit more about the charity.
Simona with Conor Hughes on his recent visit
was forced to live in horrific conditions in a filthy room with flies and dirt everywhere. Simona was on the verge of being sent to an institution where she would be locked away for the rest of her life in conditions that weren’t much better than her own home. That’s when Crosscause stepped in. According to Conor Hughes, founder of Crosscause, one of the charities volunteers
Charity helps to turn lives around
Ionel Melinte first came across the Blackrock based charity Crosscause ten years ago when they set up in the impoverished village of Nicoresti three hours north of Bucharest. “The people in the village were initially suspicious of the charity when they first came to Nicoresti. They asked questions like ‘Why are these people coming here and helping us out? What’s in it for them?’” explains Ionel. “I think they thought it was some sort of religious thing at first whereby they would try to convert us in exchange for food. Soon however they realised that these men and women from Crosscause were here simply to help them out and they were welcomed with open arms in the village. “I was 14 when they first came here and I was an orphan living in very poor circumstances. The charity gave me and the people who were looking after me a new home. They also sponsored me and paid for my bus tickets to the town of Te

Cuchi which enabled me to go to school and receive a proper education.” adds Ionel. “I did well in my exams and went on to study construction studies in university. The charity completely turned my life around. I honestly don’t know where I’d be today if it wasn’t for them.” Ionel fell in love with Claire Bignal a Crosscause volunteer in 2008 and decided that he wanted to give back to the charity which helped him so much.
Film students continue Arrested after house party to make their mark
Film students from DkIT are continuing to make their mark with two new productions getting ready to hit the big screen. Science-Fiction short film Indelible has just entered post-production in Dundalk Institute of Technology. It stars local actresses Leah Rossiter and Ceara Daly-Carney. The film was co-written and directed by Catherine McGrath and Joske Slabbers, and produced by Adam Mc Elligott. Indelible centres around a young wom-
an who has woken up with no idea what has happened the previous night. Living in a society in which people have become almost synonymous with their edited online profiles, she decides to access her internal memory and find out. Indelible was shot on location in Dundalk over four days and is now in post production. It will be entered for festival consideration upon completion and will premiere at the Fís Music & Creative Media Exhibition in
early June. Meanwhile the action/ comedy film entitled, ‘Crisis’, has also entered post-production. The film, which was produced by final year film students from Dundalk Institute of Technology, stars Paddy Haughey and Dean McCabe, and was written and directed by Stephen Staunton, and co-written and produced by Derek Farrelly. Crisis, which was shot in Dundalk, revolves around two mercenaries on a perilous assign-
ment, but along the way the duo clash over their perspectives on life and their place in the world, whilst also finding themselves fighting for their lives. The film is currently in post-production, and is projected to be complete by early summer before being submitted for festival consideration. Crisis will premiere at the Fís Music & Creative Media Exhibition in the newly refurbished Carroll Building in DkIT in early June.
A man who became involved in a dispute at a house party was arrested after Gardai spotted him running around outside with no top on. Dalton O’Brien of 42 St Olivers Park, Kilsaran, pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxication at Dundalk District Court where he was fined €100. The court was told that on April 20 this year, Gardai called to a house party at 7.45am to speak to the owner of the property. They returned to the house at 8.10am and saw Mr O’Brien running
around a green with no top on. He was arrested due to his intoxicated state. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 27-year-old client had experienced difficult with drink intermittently. The Gardai had been called by people who knew him, and he was now glad that they had done so. He revealed that the defendant’s family were concerned by the incident in which he had returned to his old ways, and as a result he was now attending AA.
Shave or Dye raises €12,000
The efforts of one group of fundraisers paid off in style was they collected almost €12,000 for cancer charities. The ‘Shave or Dye’ event in the Barleycorn, Kilcurry, once again resulted in a huge response from local people as €7,400 was raised in advance of event. A further €5,600 was collected in the Barleycorn on February 23. As a result, a cheque for €7,400 was presented to Today FM – organisers of the national fundraiser, while the local Southern Area Hospice also benefited from the event. Recently, a cheque for €4,400 was presented to Siobhan McArdle, assistant fundraising manager at the hospice, while three iPads were presented to the Louth County Hospital Stroke Rehabilitation Unit for patient use in memory of the late Seamus Reilly, Roskeagh, Kilcurry. All involved expressed their appreciation to everyone who supported the event.

Our main aim for doing the marathon relay was to gain respect for our game and our players and to prove that we are proper athletes”, explained Garry. “I started the first leg of the relay and my hands started to blister from holding the crutches after about five miles. The final mile and a half was very tough but I got through it and was happy with my time. I’d like to thank everybody who
sponsored me and would like to let people know that they can still donate to the Irish amputee soccer team through our ‘my charity. ie’ page or by contacting me directly at 0876496711. “added Garry. Finally 63-year-old Collette O’Hagan shows no signs of hanging up her running shoes as she completed an amazing 240th marathon in Limerick. Collette whose first marathon was in Dublin back in 1990 holds the Irish record for most marathons completed and is already looking forward to taking part in her next one. “Thankfully I was blessed with great stam-
ina and the ability to recover really quickly so I am already looking forward to the next marathon. Derry and Cork are both coming up and I plan on running both of them”, explained Collette. “I enjoyed the run in Limerick and I was very comfortable the whole way around. I didn’t really push myself as I have a busy running schedule coming up and I was happy to finish in five hours. “I enjoy running just as much now as when I first competed and I have no intention of finishing up any time soon. While I’m still fit and healthy I’ll always be running” laughed Collette.

There was great excitement in the Friary girl’s school last Friday as pupils dressed up as their favourite book characters as part of National Book Week. Famous characters from much loved books were brought to live as Harry Potter, The Cat in the Hat (accompanied by Thing 1 and Thing 2) and many more roamed the corridors of the Friary girls’ school. Sabrina Maguire who is a teacher in the Friary was the driving force behind the idea and was delighted with the time and effort put into the costumes by the children. “This is the first year we have run this event and I really have to commend every one of the girls for their efforts.
Friary students Loone Univer, Robyn Woods, Anneke Wisniewska, Inga Lozitsky and Lara McGuirk
They have all surpassed themselves in terms of effort and imagination”, noted Sabrina. Deputy school principal Mary Mullen echoed Sabrina’s sentiments whilst explaining the importance of National Book Week. “I think it’s important for children to read as much as they can and encouraging the girls to dress up in literary style has made many think about the books and
stories they have loved and would like to read about. “They’ve been going to the library all week, reading new books and writing little pieces about their favourite stories. Today was a bit of fun to end what was a very busy book week for us here in the Friary. As you can see there are some wonderful costumes and we look forward to more of the same next year” added Mary.

Sarah claims the Louth Rose title Teenager in family dispute Continued from Page 1 last Saturday night as she followed in the footsteps of last year’s winner Patricia Marmion. Sarah wowed the judges with her bubbly personality and entertained the packed Fairways audience with a recital of Percy French’s classic poem ‘Ach, I don’t know’. According to Sarah it had always been a dream of hers to take part in the famous old competition. “I used to always watch it when I was younger down in my granny’s house and I remember dressing up pretending that I was one of the contestants. “Brendan Galvin who organises the Louth Rose contacted me a couple of months ago and asked give it a go.” explained Sarah. “When they called out my me to enter the competition so I thought why not and decided to name on Sunday evening to
say I had won I was absolutely shocked. The 13 other girls were all so lovely and they all jumped on top of me congratulating me. It was crazy”, laughed Sarah. Sarah who has a keen interest in speech and drama as well as playing GAA football with St Brides in her spare time will now travel to Portlaoise where she will be up against 29 Irish girls with just seven making it through to the contest proper in Tralee. Although she faces a tough challenge to make it through Sarah is looking forward to Portlaoise and insists she will enjoy the weekend regardless of the result. “I’m just going to go down there and enjoy myself. Last year’s Louth Rose, Patricia Marmion has spoken to me and
Ann Byrne from Dundalk, Co. Louth, won €48,800, which included an Opel Insignia car, on last Saturday’s (4 May 2013) National Lottery Winning Streak TV Gameshow held in RTE. Pictured at the presentation of winning cheques were from left: Marty Whelan, Gameshow Host, Ann Byrne, winning participant, Peter Plunkett, Head of IT the National Lottery and Geri Maye, Gameshow Host. she has been a great help so far. She told me just to be myself and relax and enjoy the whole experience. “All the girls who were in the final with me for the Louth Rose are coming down to support me and I’d like to thank them all for being so supportive and friendly. “I’d also like to thank my Mam Aideen, my little brother Cian and all my extended family and friends. Hopefully I can do a good job down in Portlaoise and make it all the way to Tralee. It would be a dream come true for me”, concluded the newly crowned Louth Rose. The launch, which took place at Ovelle’s headquarters on Coes Road in Dundalk, was hosted by special guest and local Dundalk girl Dearbhla Lennon. The Irish Cancer Society’s partnership with Elave means that from 1st May to the end of June 2013, €1 from every Elave Shower Gel 250ml, Shampoo 250ml and Intensive Cream 125g sold will go to the Society’s Survivorship Programme. The Survivorship Programme provides practical and emotional one-to-one support for those newly diagnosed with cancer by people who have undergone cancer treatment themselves.
A 19-year-old girl who was arrested after a family dispute avoided a conviction at Dundalk District Court after agreeing to pay €100 to the local Simon Community. Victoria Curley of 69 Castletown Road, Dundalk, was arrested on August 18 last year and served with a fixed notice of a fine for being intoxicated in a public place. The fine was not paid. Inspector Martin Beggy explained that this is a practice introduced about 18

months ago for public order offences, but one that is used infrequently. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, explained that the incident arose from a family dispute and it was members of her family who had called the Gardai. The defendant, who was in court with her sister, agreed to pay €100 to charity. Judge Conal Gibbons told Ms Curley that he would give her a chance on this occasion and struck out the charges.

Local fighters impress at Scottish Open
The 9th Scottish International Open Karate Championships which was held in Edinburgh on April 27 and 28 saw not only teams from as far away as Malta, Sweden, Denmark, and France, but a large number of clubs attending from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. As part of Team Ireland, David O’Donnell and Mary Marcus shone in their categories while being put in the spotlight against International Champions within each event. Mary Marcus was the only female member of the team to come home with two medals having come third in both the Individual Kata (form) and Individual Kumite (fighting). Sensei Tommy Marrett was beaming with joy at this huge achievement, as it is the first time that both Mary and David have competed in the Scottish International Open, and it is also the first time that mem-

the Federation of WadoKai Europe. With training so intense over the past few months in preparation for Scotland, Mary and David have now set their eyes towards the Annual Chase International Karate Competition in Birmingham on May 12. They will both be joined by fel-

The second annual TY Triathlon took place in St. Mary’s, Drumcar on April 16. School teams from all over Louth took part but the De La Salle College in Dundalk was particularly successful in the team and individual events. Eight students from the college’s TY classes took part with Aidan Kieran, Ciaran O’Neill and Stephen Carron romping home in first place in the boys team event and Conall Cooney taking second place in the individual competition. Also competing were Shane McQuillan, Aaron Kelly, Ciaran Hearty and Jordan Mackin. The triathlon involved the three different activities, swimming, cycling and running and it seems that the hours of training in the pool and on the roads have paid off for the boys in blue. Congratulations to all the boys who competed and to Ms McAdam for mentoring them. Pictured is Conall Cooney.

“We were delighted to take part in the cycle as suicide and depression is a big problem in Ireland and we need to be more open and talk more about it. “People need to know it is okay to feel depressed and that there is support out there for them. And I hope events like this help to get the message out there.” added Ronan.

Hundreds of exhausted cyclists all clad in orange vests rolled into the Dundalk Institute of Technology at 5pm on Saturday evening having completed the latest leg of ‘Cycle against Suicide’. Cycle Against Suicide is a 1,400km, 14-day campaign which peddled its way around the country helping to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. The event which started in Cork covered 100km each day, with cyclists encouraged to participate in as many or as few legs as they wish. It finished in Dublin yesterday but Saturday’s leg saw the cyclists travel 100km from Cavan to DkIT where they were greeted by hundreds of wellwishers outside the Dublin Road college. Celebrities, such as Bressie and RTÉ’s Colm Hayes joined ‘Cycle against Suicide’ founder Jim Breen in DkIT as they sat down for a well-earned cup of soup and a sandwich. Ronan Lynch and Gerry Murphy from Naomh Malachi’s GAA club also took part in the cycle

Man became impulsive after brain injury A man who broke into a car at a local hotel and was caught driving a stolen car on another occasion, was given six months detention at Dundalk District Court. Michael Farrell, with an address at 44 Montpellier Gardens, Infirmary Road, Dublin 7, was described as having suffered a serious brain injury as a child which left him very impulsive. The court heard that on April 3 this year the defendant and another male broke the side window of a car at the Carrickdale Hotel and stole a jacket worth €150 and €35 cash. On February 19, 2013, Mr Farrell was stopped by Gardai from Ardee who were responding to
reports of a car being driven suspiciously. It emerged that the car belonged to a woman from Wicklow and had been stolen in Dublin earlier that day. The defendant’s barrister stated that his client, who is one of triplets, is currently serving a sentence. “When he was approximately seven years old he was hit by a van and suffered a brain injury that has hampered his development. As a result he has the cognitive ability of a child of 12 and the reading ability of a child of seven. “Things have to be explained to him in a simple and slow matter, while the injury has left
