Concern over social media comments By Paul Byrne
A local shopping centre manager has slammed irresponsible comments made on social media sites in the wake of a freak accident suffered by a young boy before Christmas. Harry Traynor, of the Marshes, said he was dismayed by comments made after a shopper fell in the Penney’s store, and stated that inaccurate comments caused concern for family members. He warned that people using social media should ensure that information is correct to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Following an incident in Penneys in the Marshes where a young boy received minor injuries as a result of a fall. The boy had been out shopping with family mem-
bers when it is understood that he fell from an escalator. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured, however it had been inaccurately reported on facebook that the boy had died. This prompted Marshes Store manager to advise caution to all those using social media. “Whilst the mainstream press covered the story with some degree of knowledge I have to express my dismay at those who posted wholly inaccurate comments on Facebook that contributed to great concern for the direct family members and those involved. “My message to all is not to stop using social media, but first ensure the information is factual and will not lead to stress or concern for those involved or the subject of such public comment. the twelve councillors voted it through with the three Sinn Fein councillors voting against the new measures. The main highlights from the budget were pay parking being reduced to €1 an hour and commercial rates being cut by 1% to €65.83.
This reduction in rates means they are now below the 2005 commercial rates charges. The council’s decision to reduce pay parking in the town to €1 per hour is expected to result in a reduction of €232,000 for 2013 with the hope that this
reduction will result in encouraging more shoppers to come into town and spend money locally. The councillors rejected a proposal from officials to introduce a charge of €12.50 for residential parking permits, in the pay parking
zone. Instead, they made an adjustment and transferred the €3,500 involved from the roads budget. County manager Joan Martin told the meeting that she hopes the combination of the lower and pay parking charge,
will help the retail sector by reducing costs and increasing footfall. She also outlined the priority actions for 2013 which included the extension and refurbishment of Dun-
dalk Sports Centre, the replacement of pay parking machines, provision of housing units through social leasing and the provision of a secondary school site in Dundalk.

Kidnapping charge A 21-year-old man was charged with kidnapping offences after a woman was dragged into a car in Dundalk before Christmas. PSNI officers say that the incident happend at about midnight on Thursday December 20. The woman aged 20 was driven to a house in Newry and escaped to safety early Friday morning. The man appeared at Newry
Magistrates Court the next day, Saturday December 22 charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, indecent assault as well as motoring offences. A 25 year old woman was also arrested in relation to the incident and was later released on bail. Gardai and PSNI detectives are appealing to anyone with any information to come forward.
Local fire service report a very quiet festive period Louth County Fire and Rescue services have been reporting on a relatively quiet Christmas period around the county for their 55 whole time and 16 retained officers. The majority of the incidents involved chimney fires, road traffic accidents and car fires. Three fire appliances attended a road traffic accident on Christmas Day at junction 15 on the M1 while a woman had to be cut from her car on Thursday 27th December after a
crash at Heynestown between Xerox and the M1 slip-road. Sean Leyden from the Dundalk Fire Station noted that the Christmas period had been relatively quiet for the stations officers this year. “Thankfully we did
not have too many serious fires or car accidents around the County over the Christmas period. “We had a couple of calls on Christmas Day but St Stephens Day and Christmas Eve were quiet for us.” he stated. YOUR LOCAL FINANCIAL BROKER IS

NO MORE READING GLASSES Did you know, you no longer need to be dependent on reading glasses, thanks to a pioneering new surgery called KAMRA Vision. At Optilase, we are proud to be the only clinic in Northern Ireland and the UK, to offer this new, life-changing surgery. Maybe you’re holding this article at arm’s length trying to focus? Everyday tasks from reading the paper or a text, checking a price tag or food menu are equally tricky, without the use of bothersome reading glasses. The fact is, as we get older, we lose our near vision. The technical term is “presbyopia”. It’s simply part of the ageing process and happens to everyone, even those who have previously had laser vision correction or enjoyed perfect vision all of their lives. Traditionally, most people with presbyopia use reading glasses to improve their near vision but with reading glasses come numerous vision and lifestyle constraints. This is the unique benefit of this revolutionary new treatment. With KAMRA Vision comes freedom and convenience. The restoration of near vision means no more dependency on reading glasses. Brian Loughlin, from L/Derry had the Kamra treatment at Optilase, Belfast in July of this year and commented: “I had the Kamra treatment at Optilase in July and it has absolutely changed my life. I used to need reading glasses to see anything up close, my mobile, computer, the news-
paper. As soon as I heard that I could get rid of my reading glasses I went for an assessment at Optilase, L/Derry. Thankfully, I was an ideal candidate and I booked my treatment for the very next week. The treatment itself was absolutely painless and took less than 30 seconds per eye. Immediately afterwards, my reading vision was fantastic! I no longer have to wear any sort of glasses. It really has changed not only my working life but the quality of my life altogether”.
“The treatment itself was absolutely painless and took less than 30 seconds per eye.”
So how does it work?
What’s called a “KAMRA inlay” is used, an exceptionally small ring, just 3.8mm in diameter and weighing less than a grain of salt. The inlay has an opening in the centre and is placed under the surface of the cornea over the centre of the pupil. It corrects presbyopia by narrowing the opening that permits light rays to enter the eye. The inlay repositions the focal point back onto the surface of the retina to achieve crisp, sharp vision. Expect to return to your usual routines the very next day! The result is picture perfect vision, without the need for cumbersome reading glasses! To find out if you are a suitable candidate, why not contact Optilase on 08000 121 565 or visit www.optilase.co.uk

Man failed in challenge to drink driving charge A man who argued that it had not been properly established that he was the driver of a car involved in a crash was disqualified from driving for two years after being convicted of a drink driving charge. Eanna McArdle of 32 Willow Grove, Dundalk, also unsuccessfully argued that the case should be thrown out as the posting of the sample had not been recorded properly. However, Judge Flann Brennan, rejected both arguments he imposed a €350 fine and two-year disqualification on the 23-yearold man who had returned from Australia to deal with the case. The court heard that Gardai were called to the scene of a traffic accident on the Ardee Road at 9.10am on October 28, 2011. They saw a car extensively damaged on
one side of the road and on the opposite side a wall had been substantially knocked down. After speaking to Eanna McArdle at the scene, the investigating Garda noted a smell of his breath, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He noted that Mr McArdle had stated he had been driving within the previous 15 minutes. The defendant was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where he provided a urine sample. This subsequently showed that the defendant was over the legal limit for driving. Under cross examination from solicitor, Conor MacGuill, the Garda noted that the sticker received from the post office did not have the time or place of postage on it. He accepted that a more comprehensive receipt is usually obtained, but that is what was pro-

vided. The Garda accpeted that he didn’t see the defendant driving. Mr McGuill put it to the judge that sufficient evidence had not been given that Mr McArdle was driving, aside from the remark the Garda stated had been made at the scene. Secondly, that there was no proof of postage of the sample and as a result the court could not be satisfied that there was no undue time delay. However, Flann Brennan disagreed on both counts, pointing out that the statement of the Garda to the court was sufficient evidence. He was satisfied that the sample had been sent within the required time frame and returned in time. He was also satisfied that there was evidence of driving. The disqualification will commence on January 6.

Lough ferry plans could provide €10m boost By Niamh Kirk
Plans for a ferry running from Greenore to Warrenpoint are set to be submitted in the coming days now economists have indicated that the initiative could be viable. The multi million pound privately backed project create more than 24 jobs through direct employment and potentially 300 indirectly. Dr Pat McCloughan was commissioned by Carlingford Ferries, whose directors include Carlingford resident Bill Tosh and
Paul O’Sullivan, to conduct an economic review of the company and found that it could be launching next year. He also suggested that the business could generate around €10 million of spending annually in the region. The ferry will operate less than 20 minutes away from the location of the Narrow Water Bridge and would form a part of circular tourism route in the Mourne/Cooley region. The project is being financed by three fam-
ilies from Limerick and Clare with experience in the car ferry industry. It has been on the cards for more than 30 years but has never been advanced to this stage. Both sides of the border the communities impacted by the ferry have indicated their objections. Last year when company directors attended area residents’ meetings they were told that there were serious concerns about its sustainability of the project and environment as unspoilt envi-
ronments are among the areas greatest assets. The farming community who use the rural roads for moving herds also expressed concerns about the potential huge increase in traffic. The lack of environmental studies was a major objection when the project was first announced however a year-long impact assessment is in its final stages. The company say they will engage with the communities and other stakeholders as the process continues.

New running track moves a step closer following funding boost The prospect of a new state-of-the-art outdoor sports facility for the community of mid-Louth edged a step closer recently as news came through that an application for funding made by Co. Louth VEC, in collaboration with Dunleer Athletics Association, to the Sports Capital Programme was successful. Last year the VEC
purchased a seven acre site adjacent to Scoil Uí Mhuirí in Dunleer and has earmarked this site for the proposed development. The local education authority has already been granted full planning permission for the development which is to consist of a new full-size 400m running track, a grass football pitch, a jogging track, tennis courts, javelin,
high-jump, longjump and shot putt facilities and changing rooms, as well as perimeter fencing and floodlighting. The joint application was awarded €120,000. CEO, Dr. Pádraig Kirk, said, “we are very pleased to have been awarded this level of funding. Together with Dunleer AC, it is clear that we were punching well above our weight
as this was the largest single award to be made in Co. Louth and was among the largest awarded to sporting organisations across the country”. The CEO continued, “it is envisaged that the facilities would be developed on a phased basis with priority being afforded to the running track and football field”.

The number of incidents of diesel sludge dumping in Co Louth increased in 2012 from 90 in 2011 to 118. The latest figures show there has been a steady increase in the amount of dumps found for the past five years. In both 2009 and 2012 only 13 dumps were reported, but that jumped to 90 in 2011. Last year’s 118 incidents are the highest recorded so far. Just across the border authorities are reporting similar
increases in the number of incidents. However while the total weight of sludge found this year in the North has increased, in Co Louth it has gone down from 1005 tonnes in 2011 to 695 on 2012. It represents a 32% drop in volume. The number of IBCs, the plastic containers which contains the toxic sludge, has also gone down by 261 from 808 in 2011 to 547 in 2012. The main reason for this is attributed to the fall in the number of trailers that are being abandoned
by the roadside filled with IBC’s containing the sludge. There were seventeen trailers found filled with IBC’s containing sludge in 2011 but only five last year. A number of factors affect the cost of cleaning up after diesel sludge dump. Despite the drop in volume the cost of cleaning up has risen. It cost local authorities more than €1.6 million this year to makes dumping sites safe. The total for the year was also increased by a large quantity of waste having been collected at
the end of 2011. All the costs are recouped from the Department of Environment. Louth County Council is upgrading the facilities at the waste compound to help deal with the problem. It will cost more than €90k and a statement from the local authorities says that it will be a legacy asset to the council. In a further effort to cut the cost of cleaning up they have appointed a new contractor McQuillan Envirocare Ltd who will be responsible for the collection and treatment of the diesel
laundering waste sludge. There were four diesel laundering plants raided in the county last year. Customs, Gardaí and PSNI are engaged in a multi agency campaign against the illegal washing of green dye from agricultural fuel. The Revenue both sides of the border have begun taking tenders for the introduction of a new marker in fuel that cannot be removed to tackle the problem. It is expected to be in use by the end of the year.

Conor Hughes who founded the Crosscause charity admitted that the early wind and rain threatened to put a dampener on proceedings but thankfully the skies had cleared by the time the show got underway. “If you were a betting man you would have said that the weather would have prevented us from going ahead with the show but miraculously the clouds cleared by mid morning and as soon as the rain stopped we had plenty of people coming down and supporting us. “We had a great day on the beach with a variety concert where all the performers where dressed as bees playing in bands such as ‘The Bee’tles,

we can place a bee hive with a rural family. When the honey bees have produced the honey it is then sold for the benefit of the family.” he added. “I’d like to thank eve-

Memories of GNR in new book A brand new book which recalls memories of life working in the GNR was launched in the Dundalk museum before Christmas. “Across the tracks- Memories of the GNR” is a project which has been funded by the Integrating Communities Programme and it records the working memories of some 28 former employees of the GNR across all the various grades of railway operations. The book has been researched,
written and edited by the renowned railway historian Charles Friel. This project has taken almost two years to complete and whilst some of the interviewees have passed away during that period most of them are still with us and will be in attendance at next week’s launch. The Dundalk Railway Heritage Society was formed from a committee of former employees of the GNR Goods Depot at Bar-
rack Street. Des Casey who is chairman of the society said the purpose of the heritage society is to expand knowledge of the railway heritage not just of Barrack Street, but also of Dundalk Engineering Works on the Ardee Road which closed in September 1958 as a result of the assimilation of the GNR into CIE. The book will be on sale in Carrolls Bookshop.

Toys on the Table appeal
Marshes Shopping Centre General Manager Harry Traynor has extended heartfelt thanks to all the customers and staff who have kindly donated to the annual Toys on the Table appeal 2012. Despite the current financial
crisis people visiting the centre have again been more than generous providing over 300 items of food stuffs and toys which have been distributed to needy families across Louth. Once again Dundalk Round Table have provided much
needed support linking with the centre and charitable groups to ensure every donation reached a suitable recipient. Harry said he had no initial expectation when launching the seasonal campaign but was never in doubt that people
would be generous in meeting such a needy cause. He expressed his public thanks to everyone for their thoughtfulness and extended best wishes to each and every family in the County on behalf of Marshes.
The Dundalk and District Lourdes committee held their Christmas party in the Ballymascanlon hotel as they celebrated their golden jubilee anniversary marking fifty years of diocesan pilgrimages to the world famous shrine. During the celebrations the committee were given two folding self propelled wheelchairs as a gift by staff members past and present of the Ballymascanlon hotel. Committee secretary Mary Murphy thanked the hotel staff for their generous gift while also thanking the people of Dundalk for their continued support. “We had a lovely Christmas party in the Ballymascanlon hotel and we would like to thank the past and present members of the hotel for their lovely and very practical gift of two wheelchairs. We will get great use out of the wheelchairs during our pilgrimage in May and in future trips as well.” explained Mary. “We have a party every

It’s lovely to renew old acquaintances and we had Santa visit us this year for the children that were there on the night. Once again we would like to thank the people of Dundalk for their continued support throughout the year” she added. Thousands of people from the Dundalk area have taken part in the diocesan pilgrimage since the 1960s, including the sick and elderly, accom-

Left with no choice but to mind sister’s children
Senator Moran honoured to present the 2012 Access Louth Awards
Louth Access award winnes at the Crowne Plaza Hotel
The winners of the Louth Access awards were honoured at a special function at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in December. Speaking at the event Senator Moran acknowledged how the awards are an excellent way to highlight the hard work, good practises and consideration that many businesses and organisations in the county have adopted in order to improve the standards of accessibility and also how they highlight awareness of the issues that face people with any kind of mobility issue on a day to day basis. Senator Moran noted that she
was particularly heartened by the sheer volume of nominations from all over the County and the various improvements and renovations that have been undertaken in recent years by shops offices and business premises for ease of access for customers with a disability, wheelchair users, the elderly and parents with prams and pushchairs. The Labour senator continued “I congratulate all the award winners here tonight. I also commend in the highest fashion the shops businesses and organisations that have ensured that their premises are more accessible including having adequate wheelchair park-
ing spaces at their place of business ,ensuring that only those with Disabled Parking badges are allowed to park in the designated spaces, those businesses who have gone to a huge amount of effort to renovate their premises to ensure easier. “I would also like to commend those owners who consult with people who have mobility impairment when carrying out changes because sometimes it doesn’t need involve a lot of expense or work to improve access but just common sense and communication with the right people to make for easier access. See Page 18.
A woman who had been left with little choice but to look after her sister’s two children resorted to hitting her nephew with a belt in order to deal with his indisciplined behaviour. The 41-year-old Nigerian national who has been in Ireland since 2009 pleaded guilty of a charge of Cruelty to Children, had the case against her at Dundalk District Court adjourned to March 20 pending a Proba-
tion Report. The court heard that the boy had told his teacher he had been beaten with a belt containing a buckle. The boy had suffered an injury to his thigh and children were taken into care, where they remain. The children’s mother has subsequently returned from Nigeria and is being reintegrated to contact with her son and daughter.
Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the defendant was left with little option but to mind the children, despite having no experience. She found it difficult to cope with the behaviour of the boy who was since diagnosed with ADHD. He added that she had been doing her best for the children but was being driven demented by the boy’s behaviour.
The recent Dulargy National School Christmas Holly Fair was a resounding success. Organised by the school’s Parents Association and held in the wonderful setting of Anaverna House in Ravensdale, the Fair raised just over €1,800 for the school, which will go towards new school equipment in 2013. The Music Generation Louth Youth Strings Orchestra made their debut at the fair and delight-
ed parents and friends with their wonderful performance. The Dulargy School Choir kept the festive spirit going with great energy and exuberance. It was an action packed afternoon with Gingerbread Decorating, Christmas Crafts and Favours, Wreath Making, Face and Nail Painting, Raffle, Bottle Stand, Gourmet BBQ, and a stunning range of delicious home baked goodies, which all went
down a treat. A wonderful afternoon was enjoyed by all and the Parents Association would like to sincerely thank everyone who came out to support the Holly Fair and all the tireless workers who helped on the day, all who baked and donated bottles and gifts. An extra special thanks goes to Lindis and all the Lenox-Conyngham Family, for again providing the unique venue for the event.

Over to you QUESTION: What are your New Year Resolutions?
Roisin Johnson

Michael Emmanuel
My main resolution this year is just to live life to its very fullest and to make the most of everything throughout the year.
My main resolution this year is to keep my room as tidy as possible. It is generally a mess so I’m going to have to try hard.
My main hopes for 2013 are for people to become closer to one another and have peace and happiness just like the birds in the sky. There’s too much negativity about so hopefully that can change.
I have a pet dog and I’ve promised that I will take it for a lot more walks in 2013. I’m also going to be tidier at home.
Like every year my main wish this year is to become more financially stable. I think a lot of people will have the same resolution as me.
Changes to Driving Licenses from this month By Niamh Kirk
Local authorities have announced that provisional and full driving licenses are set to change from this January 19. Anyone who applies for a licence after January 12 will get the new credit card sized plastic licenses which are the standard in the EU.
People still need to apply for licenses through the motor tax office in the Millennium Centre, Alphonsus road, Dundalk but over the counter licenses no not be available after January 12. Because of the card security feature, licenses will now be posted directly to the applicants.
The local motor tax office will continue to offer these services until September 2013 but after that all new licenses will be issued through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) Road Safety Authority which becomes the national licensing authority this month. According to Noel Brett
CEO of the RSA the initiative is being made so Ireland complies with EU Law. He said “among its key benefits are that it is more durable, convenient and less susceptible to fraud, but it will also act as a key road safety tool to keep those who are illegally driving a vehicle off our roads.
Paper licenses, which are valid for a maximum of ten years, will be replaced by the new card as they expire. From January a ten year licence will cost €55. A three-year licence will cost €35 and a one-year licence will be €25. The cost of a learner permit is €35. Licences for the over 70s will remain free of

Local authorities’ advice that if your licenses expire during this time to submit your renewal application to your local Motor Taxation Office at the earliest opportunity.

Great response to Blackrock Girl Guides’ Toy appeal
Warto pamiętać o tradycjach sylwestrowych, bo są interesujące i świadczą o bogactwie obyczajowości społeczeństwa. in Brief Wetlands of Louth
On January 8 at 8pm an illustrated talk entitled Wetlands of Louth will be given in the Spirit Store. The talk will be given by Faith Wilson, an ecologist who has recently completed a survey of the wetlands of County Louth along with Peter Foss, Patrick Crushell, and Barry O’Loughlin of Wetland Surveys Ireland. Wetlands are one of the most important natural resources in Ireland, and in Louth, not just for biodiversity, but also for the ecological services wetlands provide, such as purification of drinking water and flood attenuation. Wetlands are also increasingly at risk from pollution, drainage and infilling, but also enjoy increasing levels of protection. The Spirit Store is located on Dundalk Docks, Dundalk, County Louth - the talk will take place upstairs. As usual, entry is free and all are welcome.
Concern raised over irresponsible comments posted on social media By Paul Byrne A local shopping centre manager has slammed irresponsible comments made on social media sites in the wake of a freak accident suffered by a young boy before Christmas.
The boy had been out shopping with family members when it is understood that he fell from an escalator. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured, however it had been inaccurately reported on facebook that the boy had died. This prompted Marshes Store manager to advise caution to all those using social media. “Whilst the mainstream press covered the story with some degree of knowledge I
have to express my dismay at those who posted wholly inaccurate comments on Facebook that contributed to great concern for the direct family members and those involved. “My message to all is not to stop using social media, but first ensure the information is factual and will not lead to stress or concern for those involved or the subject of such public comment. “Thankfully the young boy is indeed OK and the news of his recovery was of great relief to all of the staff involved in the initial incident. “As we end 2012 let’s make a conscious decision to be a
little more cautious when using public mediums such as facebook” he concluded. Mr Traynor’s comments come at at time when social media sites such as Twitter and facebook coming under increasing scrutiny following a number of recent suicide cases, there have been further calls for people to exercise restraint and caution when posting messages online. Online bullying has been blamed as a contributory factor in a number of recent high-profile suicide cases, including that of Shane McEntee, the junior agriculture minister, who was found dead

Christmas Morning Run
One of the longest running sporting charity events in the country continued over the festive period when Dowdallshill GF & AC held the annual Christmas Morning Run to St Oliver’s Hospital. The event was first organised in 1959 when athletes and footballers from the Dundalk club ran from their clubrooms, then on the Racecourse Road, to deliver presents to patients at Blessed Oliver’s on the Ardee. Every year since then club members have made the trip that is one of highlights of the year for the hospital as the club also provides music and entertainment. The club now visits St Oliver’s at the Louth Hospital and over the years, money collected has been presented to the hospital to purchase much-needed equipment such as PA sound systems, wheelchairs, walking aids, televisions and a full size crib with figures.

TOYOTA AURIS
This is the new Toyota Auris Touring Sports. With Estates accounting for 25% of family car sales, Toyota has wisely added an Estate for the first time to the Auris line-up. It will also be the first car in its segment to feature a full hybrid powertrain. The Hybrid variant will be able to carry the same load as the normally fueled version. Although it has the same
wheelbase as the Auris hatchback the estate is 285 mm longer to accommodate the extra cargo hold. It also has the same front-end design as the hatch, but in profile the steeply raked windscreen flows into an extended roofline featuring anodised aluminium rails and an integrated rear spoiler. The side glazing extends across three panels, with gloss black B-pillars, and is underscored
by a chrome-accented trim above a rising belt line crease. The bumper and tailgate have a new design, with the sill set 80mm lower than on the hatchback. The height of the licence plate is raised to maintain balanced proportions. The new wraparound rear combination lamps reinforce the shaped of the D-pillars and the rear screen.

SPEED CAMERA VANS update AA Ireland has informed us that, as planned, new locations identified as accident black spots are to be targeted by Go Safe speed camera vans this year in a bid to get drivers to slow down and reduce the loss of life and number of serious injuries sustained on our roads. The new locations have been choosen following a review of a 5 year data set which identifies the most dangerous stretches of road in the country. First rolled out in November 2010, and fully operational since early November 2011 we believe that Go Safe speed camera vans are a legimate and effective means of stamping out speeding at notorious black spots. We also know that from our interactions with motorists that most of you support them as a good road safety initiative. Over the coming weeks and months local authorities will be erecting signs to alert drivers that they are in a speed camera zone. These areas will also be available via the Garda website.
