Dundalk’s talented young female boxers were the toast of the town as the Dealgan club’s star boxers produced three All Ireland titles and a runners-up finish recently in Dublin’s National Boxing Stadium. The Dealgan boxing club have a long history of producing some of the best talent to come out of Louth in previous years and this year was to be no exception. Orla Garvey, 50kgs girl 3, was going for her second national title in a row and after a hard fought 14 to 9 win in her semi-final, she was to meet Shauna McCann of Neilstown in this year’s final. Orla is unbeaten in the last two years in all competitions and she showed what a dynamic boxer she is when her opponent was unable to get a

Bus strike causes commuter travel chaos By Niamh Kirk

THE industrial action by Bus Eireann almost caused travel chaos for local commuters on Monday morning. However it appeared that the commuting population and private service was well prepared to avert chaos. In preparation Paddy Mathews from Matthews Coaches was at

the Marshes Shopping Centre before 6am to ensure that everyone got to work or college on time. The swell of numbers was manageable according to the coach company. They had diverted a lot of resources into ensuring that the morning commute was not too stressful. “No one was left standing,” said Mr Matthews. It was a particularly

worrying time for some students who are beginning exams this week. There were large, early morning crowds in Drogheda making their way to Dundalk for study and work. AA road watch warned that some Dublin-Belfast route through Dundalk would not be operating and that commuters who were driving should leave earlier

to avoid delays. There was limited services between Dundalk and Dublin and Dundalk and Belfast, as were local and regional services. A spokesperson for the national bus service said “Bus Éireann apologises for any inconvenience caused due to this industrial action. Customers can check online at buseireann,ie

for updates to services. The strike centres on a dispute between National Bus and Rail Union members and Bus Eireann over the company’s efforts to cut costs; they aim to cut €5million from the payroll. Unions say the measures could cost their members more than €4,000 per year, which is unaffordable. The county has a

large commuter population with the 2011 census showing more than 10,000 people travelling out of Co Louth daily for work or college, while more than 6000 travel into the main employment catchment areas of Drogheda and Dundalk. Travel returned to normal on Tuesday as the action was suspended to allow talks take place.

Co Louth VEC have released images of their brand new 1,000 place postprimary school due to commence in September 2014. Pobalcholáiste Chú Chulainn will be constructed on a spacious ten acre site at the Marshes in Dundalk town centre. Construction will get underway later this year. The impressive 3D architect’s images will give the people of Dundalk their first glimpse of what the new school will look like when completed. CEO of Co. Louth VEC, Dr. Pádraig Kirk, was naturally very pleased with the latest development. “I am delighted to now be able to make these images public. Up until now people would only have been able to conceptualise what our new school would look like, but now the people of Dundalk and surrounding areas can see exactly what we intend to provide. This makes it real.

Images of Pobalcholáiste Chú Chulainn which will open in September 2014 on the new school on Thursday May 30 at 7:30pm in Wellington Hall, St. Mary’s Road, Dundalk. The enrolment process for a place in first year in September 2014 will be launched on the night and brochures and application forms will be made available. The VEC expect that there will be significant interest among parents of current 5th Class primary pupils in the new school.

Pobalcholáiste Chú Chulainn will be one of the most architecturally well designed, modern, high-tech, comfortable and well-resourced schools in the country when it commences in September 2014”. One of the images shows an expansive school frontage as viewed from Marshes Avenue, showing a new entry/exit road and impressive green space to the front of the school.

Another shows the school and its library as viewed from the new public park, also to be constructed on the site. Dr. Kirk added, “I have worked with architects for many years now and can say with confidence that what we see here is exactly what we will get. This is a very exciting time for Co. Louth VEC”. Planning permission for the new school is being fast tracked through the statutory

planning stages in accordance with Part 8, article 81 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 (as amended). The school is deemed to be an essential piece of infrastructure for Dundalk and its environs and will go before a future meeting of Dundalk Town Council for approval. The annual happy heart appeal was launched last week, revealing that as many as four people a week die in County Louth due to heart disease. According to the national charity, 273 people are diagnosed here every day with stroke or heart disease, enough to fill two and a half double-decker buses daily. But demand for The Irish Heart Foundation’s patient services is fast outgrowing the funding available to support it. This May the Irish Heart Foundation is urgently calling on the public to give generously to their Happy Hearts Appeal. Give €2 this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, by texting HEART to 50300 to give €2, donating online throughout May at www.irishheart.ie or by organising an event.

Paddy Matthews takes over as chamber president By Niamh Kirk LOCAL businessman Paddy Matthews, of Matthews coaches, is the newly elected president of Dundalk’s Chamber of Commerce. The title was officially taken up last week during the Chamber AGM where he commended the commitment and dedication of his predecessor, Paddy Malone. Mr Matthews indicated that he

would intend to continue with the initiatives already underway and was in the process of drawing up a strategic plan for the next three years and beyond. He invited members to discuss this or any other matters with him and invited those businesses that are not members of the Chamber to join. “There has been Trojan work done. Paddy Malone has been exceptional and he’ll be a tough

act to follow. He has put a lot of structures in place,” said Mr Matthews. But there is a crisis he said and the ambition is to tackle it head on. “We want Dundalk to be a destination where you work, live play and stay and we want to send that image across the world. The further integration and collaboration between the various committees and local authorities will be

the key. “There are a lot of different organisations and groups and we will get them around the table together, get some ideas flowing. It is about uniting the forces. We have a brilliant town; it is about getting it working”, explained the new president. Dundalk, he noted, was once a town where someone could leave school at a very young age and

find lots of jobs available. Now however, new skills are needed to meet the demands of the emerging IT based industries and Mr Matthews aims to see the demand being met. Mr Malone said that Mr Matthews should inspire confidence, having built Matthews Coaches from scratch, and being someone who everyone knows has done a superb job with his own busi-

ness. Holly Dance is now the Chamber’s Vice President while Michael Farrell remains as treasurer. If Dundalk Chamber of Commerce is the voice of Business in the area, then it is getting louder. Mr Farrell revealed that membership of the Chamber has gone up in the past year, despite the economic downturn.

AFTER handing over the chains of office to his successor, Paddy Malone had a chance to reflect on his four years as Chamber President, during which time he felt he achieved much despite the challenging economic conditions. Forging links, getting people talking and creating the framework for future collaboration was top of the list when he took office. “I wanted, firstly, to get a good working relationship with everyone. That was my main target; to get the different local authority institutions working together and co

operating,” he said. Another goal was to highlight the levels of unemployment in the area, and the McArdle report which revealed Dundalk as having among the worst deprivation problems in the country saw a second ambition realised. One of the standout achievements, he says, was the campaign against VAT increases in national budgets that

would have served to boost numbers travelling North to go shopping. “The fact that we had a strong voice when we spoke about it, and it gained national attention, and that it was favourable for the town,” he said, was what made it particularly special moment on a personal level. Another highlight was seeing one of his heroes, sports commentator

Jimmy McGee, receive a rapturous welcome to Dundalk when acting as Grand Marshal of the St Patricks Day parade in 2009. A successful presidency was completed on receiving his award for 40 years of membership of Fine Gael which was presented to him by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at a business lunch only two weeks ago. “The Chamber is

now seen as the voice of business in Dundalk” he said, something he had no small part in establishing. But Mr Malone is still actively involved in the Chamber as their PRO and in various projects. “I’ve always believed this town has a positive future,” he said, and added that he will continue to promote that Dundalk is an ideal location to do business.

Praise for making progress on drugs issues

A MAN who is battling to overcome a drug problem was praised for his efforts at Dundalk District Court and encouraged to keep up the good work. Judge Flann Brennan expressed his pleasure at seeing Kenneth Callan of 9 Archway, Francis St, Dundalk, making progress as he adjourned charges against him for six months. “There are too many offences to deal leniently with the case but I will put it back for six months on continued supervision to see then. Things are going well and I have to say I am surprised but he deserves some credit for that”, said Judge Brennan who encouraged the defendant to keep

making progress. “You have to get drugs completely out of your life or your future prospects will be very limited if you don’t, but it is a question of keeping clear of the drug lifestyle and culture. “Good luck and I mean that sincerely. Keep it up”, added the judge. Evidence was given of a charge of unlawful possession of drugs when he was found with one and a half ecstasy tablets, valued at €10, at the Vantastival music festival in Bellurgan on May 5, 2012. The defendant has seven previous convictions. The case was adjourned to November 6.

Girls turn on the style

From page 1 from Letterkenny in the final, who was narrowly defeated in last year’s final. Nicole produced three rounds of some of the most technical boxing to be seen in this year’s girl’s championships, with lightning speed footwork and sharp counter-punching she went on to claim her third title in successive years, winning on a score of 14 to 7. Again this young girl is well on her way to representing Ireland in European and World competitions. Amy Broadhurst, the current European Featherweight champion and youngest female boxer to ever win a European gold medal, was going for her seventh Irish title which shows why she is mentioned in the same breath as Katie Taylor. Ciara Ginty, a four time Irish champion from Gaesala was to be Amys opponent in the final. Amy despite not producing her best boxing due to being ill in the week leading up to the fight still

prevailed on a score of 16 to 12, a remarkable achievement considering the circumstances and Amy will now get the chance to defend her European title in Hungary at the end of June, alongside Katie Taylor. Nicole McCann, 54kgs youth 2, is another of Dealgan’s brightest talents and after only being in the club for a year, for her to make the final was an achievement in itself. Her opponent was Rebecca Gorman of Clann Naofa and from the first bell Nicole met her opponent head on and in a very close first round Nicole was trailing by a single point. In round two, despite Nicole throwing every single punch a boxer could throw, she found herself up against an opponent who returned every punch and by the end of the round she was still behind. In the final round Nicole left every bit of energy she had in the ring but despite such a great and brave effort she was to lose the contest, 22 to 14.

Aby zapobiec powstaniu nowoczesnego państwa polskiego, caryca Katarzyna Wielka i król Prus Fryderyk Wielki sprowokowali konflikt pomiędzy„konserwatystami” w Sejmie a królem, dotyczący praw mniejszości religijnych. I w ten oto sposób, niespełna 5 lat później doszło do I rozbioru Polski. Pozdrawiam – Agnieszka Boniewicz

10k run draws the crowds Dundalk Leader 15th May 2013

Walkers, runners and joggers took on the roads of Dundalk last Sunday morning evening as they took part and completed the fourth annual Dundalk 10K run. With no half marathon this year numbers were down on previous years but there was still a healthy crowd of almost 500 runners who came out to support the event which has become one of the most popular events on the Irish running circuit. Dunleer’s Darragh Greene raced to the 10k finishing in an impressive 33 mins and 26 seconds. Darragh had only decided to run the race at the very last minute but that decision proved to be a good one as he finished seven seconds clear of his

nearest pursuer. There was no surprise in the women’s event with the impressive Donna Evans winning the event for the fourth year in a row with a time of 38:07. There was a buzz about the town prior to race time as entrants and spectators limbered up with some athletes taking things slightly more seriously than others. In a changed route from previous years the competitors began their race at St Patrick’s Cathedral before heading out the Newry road and out by Dowdallshill eventually arriving back in town where they crossed the finishing line in Earl St. Race organiser Bryan McCrystal declared himself

delighted with the turnout and thanked everybody who had helped make the event such a great success. “We had almost 500 runners taking part and we’d like to thank everybody who helped make the race such a success again this year” said Bryan. “From the town council, the Gardaí, civil defence, all the marshalls and everybody who raised money for various charities we say a big thank you them all” he added. “This year we are handing over a cheque to the North Louth Hospice which is a really worthwhile charity who do so much great work in the County. “I’d also like to mention Raymond McCabe as well. The race was run in his wife

ago.” explained Bryan. A cheque will be handed over to the North Louth Hospice this week before the committee set their sights on organising next year’s event.

Karaoke will help children’s wishes come true News THE effort to make the wishes of seriously ill children come true continues next week in Dundalk’s Got Talent. Taking place in Brubakers Bar this May 31, the karaoke style sing-off sees 25 locals take to the stage and try and impress a panel of

four judges and the audience to win the title. It is free in on the night, and supporters can buy a voting card to boost their favourite singer’s chances of winning. All the funds from voting goes to the effort to see all the chil-

dren in the county have a dream come true through the Make a Wish Foundation. The winner will get overnight accommodation and will perform in the Fairways Hotel at the Make a Wish fundraiser celebration in November when

the draw for the coveted VW Polo that is being raffled takes place. Tickets for the raffle are available from the Longwalk Shopping centre on June 1. To get involved contact Gerry on 0872871365.

Death of popular Blackrock man From page one man around Blackrock and was a larger than life character about the place. Everyone in Blackrock would have a story to tell about Owenie and we’re all very sad to see him leave us”, said Niall. “He was at home on Thursday evening when a fire broke out inside the house. The ambulances arrived on the scene quickly and brought him to Lourdes before he was transferred up to James’s but tragically he died on Sunday morning as a result of his injuries.” Owenie, beloved brother of Mary Corrigan, Margaret Brindley, Eamon, Anne Putz, Jim and the late Gerry will be buried this morning at 11am in St Oliver Plunketts Church in Blackrock. His passing is deeply regretted by his brothers, sisters, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Students from St Louis Secondary School who took part in the project

Student projects highlight the value of social justice STUDENTS from three schools in Dundalk were among 24 Transition Year groups from 12 second level schools in Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan, who participated in a St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) Youth For Justice Exhibition in the Nuremore Hotel, Carrickmacross on May 2. The programme aims to create an awareness in young people of the importance of social justice and the obligation of all to assist

those in local communities who find life difficult. The display showcased how the Transition Year pupils became involved during the year in a number of action projects on behalf of the charity, including social research into cyber bullying, mental health and teenage pregnancy, as well as befriending the elderly and those with special needs, shared reading with national schools, Christmas ham-

pers and carol singing. Each class put together a project display board and did powerpoint presentations and slide shows, together with films, singing and drama pieces. Attracta McNiece, Youth Development Officer, SVP NorthEast Regional Council, says the programme provides opportunities for students to enhance and develop their caring and compassionate nature.

The Realm on stage at Vantastival

Festival season kicks off in style at Vantastival By Niamh Kirk

FESTIVAL season began with a bang on Bellurgan Park at a weekend filled with the best of Irish music and family fun at the Vantastival Music Festival. It was up to the local musicians to kick off a bank holiday weekend’s festivities. Dundalk act, The Seasons, were the first band to strike a chord on Friday evening and add the first notes to a weekend of great gigs. Over on the main stage the

recently reunited The Realm got the crowd dancing early on with the funk-rock. And as the sun set, Third Smoke impressed on the earthy and ethereal Valhalla stage. The weather picked-up as the weekend progressed and revellers enjoyed the dawning of summer and the finest Irish contemporary music. “We were delighted with how the festival went. Numbers were up, all the new features went down a storm and all the feed-

back we’ve had has been fantastic,” said Louise Tangy one of the festivals founders. There were plenty of highlights over the three daylong event. There were some top-notch adhoc performances at the open mic stage. The successes of the new local stage Melomania were among the highlights for the organisers and revellers alike. “A personal highlight for me was Damien Dempsey, who rounded off the Main Stage activities with style, “ said Louise.

Boost for cross border health care prospects THE visit to the Louth County Hospital of health ministers from both sides of the border is another indication that co-operation is the way forward for improving health care in this region.

Fine Gael Louth Deputy, Peter Fitzpatrick, said the visit by the Health Ministers, Edwin Poots MLA and James Reilly TD to Louth this week has brought a renewed focus to the importance of cross border health projects, the aim of which is to enhance the services available to all users.

“Minister Reilly and Minister Poots were in Louth this week to witness the work being carried by a number of Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT)

James Reilly

projects. “Time was also given over to hearing about the CAWT Social Inclusion Project which focuses on eradicating health inequalities for women, travellers and other vulnerable or marginalised groups. “We then paid a visit to Louth County Hospital to hear about the progress being made by the CAWT Genito-Urinary Medicine clinics that provide access to preventative and curative services to those

living with sexually transmitted infections.
”, explained Deputy Fitzpatrick. “By ensuring that we share expertise and ideas on how best to assist those in both jurisdictions who most need our help, be that with mental health issues or tackling drug/alcohol abuse, we can make the most of the resources available and provide the services that are needed.

“Minister Reilly expressed the intention of both ministers to work together on a range of services including the provision of paediatric cardiac surgery on an all island basis. This will ensure the delivery of a world class service, using the skills and capabilities of healthcare professionals on both sides of the border.

School’s novel Brand new venue for project for Louth Agricultural Show The Gathering

The students of St Fursey’s National School are about to embark on a landmark project as part of the Gathering Ireland. The current student body is aiming to trace the lives of past pupils, to find out where they ended up and show how the context of Ireland may have contributed to this. The students are looking at the Irish Diaspora in particular and as part of a history project, they will look at what was happening in Ireland at the time when people left; revealing if it is war, recession or the spirit of adventure that drives people from these shores. Using old roll books, county archives and long memories in the local community, pupils will track where the past pupils have gone and live now, or where their descendants are located. Considering the school opened in 1860 there will be quite a long roll call. They will then try to make

contact with these people – using e-mail, Facebook and a postcard campaign. The pupils have designed and printed special postcards which they are asking everyone who can, to post one to a past pupil of Haggardstown school. Anyone who attended, or knows someone who attended the Haggardstwon national school is encouraged to help out. Postcards are available from the school or from members of the Parents’ Committee. Or you can spread the word through social networks which has a link to the school’s Facebook page and let them know we would love to see them in 2013. The project will culminate in the next academic year when all past pupils of St Fursey’s are invited to come ‘Back to School’ on October 18 2013 for a day of celebration. It is being officially launched this Friday at a special event held in the school.

A NEW venue always brings a huge level of excitement and challenges and Dundalk Show Society Ltd look forward to staging the 2013 Co. Louth Agricultural Show in Bellurgan Park. Preparations are well underway for the event which takes place on Saturday June 15 and Sunday 16 and the members of Dundalk Show Society Ltd look forward to welcoming everyone to the 122nd staging of the event where there will be a packed programme of events for all with special emphasis on being a fun filled family day out. Dundalk Show Society Ltd Chairperson Carmel Mee, re-

vealed that the show aims to showcase agricultural practices for all ages, bringing together rural and urban life. “The mission is to be a shop window for what is produced locally, explaining the process from farm to fork, highlighting best agricultural practice and adherence to quality production. “Shows like the Co. Louth Agricultural Show also help to preserve traditions handed down through generations which otherwise could be forgotten”, explained Carmel. Entries are now being sought for the 2013 Co. Louth Agricultural Show. There are many

classes for Cattle, Sheep, Horses and Ponies, Show Jumping, Side Saddle, Carriage Driving, Poultry, Alpacas, Dogs and Gun Dogs, Sheep Dog Trials, Arts and Crafts, Horticulture, Home Industries, Photography, Baking and Flower Arranging. There are also classes for children and those with special needs, Best Dressed and Bonny Baby competitions and trade stands. Winning a rosette at the show adds value to an exhibit and winning a cup is the icing on the cake for many. As always the Co. Louth Agricultural Show holds a number of qualifying events for All Ireland

Grammar School students with their awards at the F1 final

Grammar pupils impress at F1 final By Paul Byrne

LOUTH’S only representatives in this year’s F1 in Schools Technology Challenge did the County proud finishing second overall in the country and picking up two awards for their efforts. Infinity F1 from Dundalk Grammar School picked up awards for ‘Best use of social media’

and ‘Best Portfolio’ as they impressed the judges with their presentation. The F1 in Schools competition challenges students to design, build and race model Formula 1 racing cars in a bid to foster creativity and teamwork. Erin Maguire, Dylan Clarke, Robert Kierans, Craig McHugh, Sean Og Cairns and Luke Reid were competing for the

one experience of a lifetime to reach the World Finals which will be held in Austin, Texas, USA in November. Unfortunately they fell just short finishing second overall but as Craig McHugh, Marketing and Resource manager for the team, explains there may still be hope for the team to reach Austin in November. “The entire team is de-

lighted with our second place finish.” said a clearly delighted Craig. “We have been informed that we may also have the opportunity to collaborate with another team from another nation to compete in the 2013 World Finals which will take place in November in Austin, Texas. “We will be informed whether we will be able to take part in this col-

laboration team later in the week. So hopefully we will get some good news.” explained Craig. “Thank you to all our fantastic supporters, sponsors and most of all to two very important people : Paul Murphy and Scott Nowell, as without their sheer passion, drive and experience we would not be the great team we are today”, added Craig.

The plans for this year’s Relay for Life Dundalk are well underway. The 24-hour event is due to take place the weekend of October 5/6 at a venue to be confirmed. Following a fantastic result last year with over €94k raised through everyone’s combined effort the committee are hoping that with the continued support of the community, they can manage to exceed that total this year. With just over 20 weeks until the big event, committee member, Bronagh McGuinness, is now looking for confirmation from past teams that wish to partake again this year. Also new teams are always welcome so please recommend Dundalk Relay to anyone you believe may be interested in taking part. “We would love to see everyone again, groups that have been with the Relay before bring so much to the event and are important to its great success each year. “This years Facebook Page has now been updated to reflect the relevant information, and I would be very grateful if you could encourage friends and family to Like and Share our page to raise awareness of the event and its importance”, added Bronagh.

Over to you QUESTION: What song did you/will you pick for your first wedding song?

Colin Byrne Panic by The Smiths. I think that song will suitably encapsulate my feelings on the big day!

Catherine Dulku My first dance was a song called Kisses in the moonlight by George Benson. That song was playing when my husband Mick asked me to marry him.

Ann Geraghty My first song was ‘Come on Baby light my fire’ by The Doors. I think the title says it all!

Katie Agnew

Fiona Farrell

We had ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’ by Elvis as our first dance. The main reason being that we had an Elvis impersonator as our wedding band!

Our first dance was ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’ by Van Morrisson. It’s just a really romantic song and the words are lovely.

Dear Heart of Jesus. In the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (Mention Favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart. NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA

O St. Martha, I resort to you and to your petition and faith. I offer up to you this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour that you enjoyed when Our Saviour lodged in your house. I beseech you to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask you St. Martha to overcome the dragon which you cast at your feet. Van for Blackrock TT

Ben Reel performs in The Spirit Store

Blackrock Tidy Towns recently took possession of their new van which was presented to them by local taxi firm Rock Cabs. The Tidy Towns van is a regular sight around the village, used mainly on litter patrols and driven by personnel from The Fane Community

Employment Scheme. “Our old van was on its last legs, but we didn’t have the finances ourselves to acquire a replacement. It has become an

essential part of our litter management plan for Blackrock and now we can continue our work in keeping the village litter free” he said.

Pictured is David Devlin of Rock Cabs presenting the keys of the new van to John Horan, Chairman of Blackrock Tidy Towns committee.

On Saturday April 27, fourteen youth hockey teams from across Ireland, descended on Belfast Ice Dome to take part in the first Belfast Ice Dome Community cup. The players travelled from Dublin, Athlone, Dundalk, Dundonald and Sandy Row. Marcus

Kinsella-Heggestaad (Ravensdale) played with Belfast Ice Dome All Stars team , Dennis Muskalidi (Glenmore) played with Belfast Junior Giants and Matt and Adam Rice (Bellurgan) played with Dublin Junior Flyers. The puck dropped on the first game at 10am

and the last goal was scored at 6.30pm. It was an amazing day with Junior Belfast Giants teams winning the under 10s and the under 12s divisions and Dublin Junior Flyers beating the Dublin Ducks to take home the LTP over 12s cup. A big thank you goes

to everyone from Dundalk who made the tournament such a success: Jim Pepper, David Sally and Rosemarie Coleman who acted as score and time keepers on the day, Vytautas Lukosevicius and Roman Grobarcik who were the referees for the tournament.

Airtricity workers present a cheque to SOSAD following their recent fundraiser

Community at Heart day benefit for SOSAD group By Niamh Kirk

THE suicide prevention organisation, SOSAD, benefited from the efforts of a group of local workers who got together to raise funds. The group from Airtricity recently chose SOSAD as their charity of choice for their “Community at Heart” day as they ran in the Ray’s 5k and donated funds raised to the organisation. Manager Declan Kerr said: “The reason for choosing SOSAD Ireland is that we feel it’s a well-

deserved cause especially with the time that’s in it. You never know when you’re going to be down or in trouble”. According to colleague, Shane Taheny, “Everyone knows somebody that has been affected by suicide”. Figures for the past ten years show that County Louth’s suicide rates have been above the national average with an average of 14 cases of death by suicide per population of 100,000 in 2010, and 13 per cases per 100,000 in

2011. Dangerous self harm is also significantly higher in the county than the national average for both men and women. “If you are concerned about any member of your family, friends, work colleagues or a member of the local community that you may think are distressed or depressed the charity welcomes you to ring them for more information ring the 24 hour helpline on 042-9327311,” said Davia Shortall of SOSAD.

A Dundalk man was banned from keeping a dog for a period of two years after pleading guilty to an animal cruelty charge and permitting a carcass to remain unburied. The facts of the case had been heard at a previous sitting of the court at which time a Probation Report was ordered. Speaking in relation to that report, solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that there was a disconnect between its contents and the intentions of his client. “He didn’t understand that concept of neglect and that this can hap-

pen over a long period of time, whether he was there or not. It was something he had previously not worked out but now he has. “He now accepts full responsibility for his actions. He thought he was doing his best, but his best wasn’t good enough. He takes full responsibility for the neglect of the dogs”, added Mr MacGuill. In October last year, the court heard that on February 16 2012 Gardai called to the home of Peter Conlon, 162 Waterville Crescent, Tom Bellew Avenue, where they met Fiona

Squibb of the LSPCA. They saw a Lurcher pup alive who had been eating the carcass of a second pup. On that occasion, solicitor, James MacGuill, told the court that his 29-yearold client was deeply embarrassed over the incident and apologised to the court. He stated that the defendant was re-establishing a relationship and had been spending time away from the premises. He had arranged for a family member to feed the dogs but this hadn’t happened.

BEETLE GSR

VW have just announced details of of their new hot Beetle, the GSR. Worldwide there will be 3,500 models of the Beetle GSR which based on the orginal Beetle ‘Yellow-Black Racer' 1303 S of 40 years ago. Out of interest ‘GSR' stands for ‘Gelb-Schwarze Renner' in German, which means ‘GoldBlack Racer'. In keeping with the 70’s classic the bonnet and the bootlid of the new Beetle GSR are black and this time this extends to the roof and the exterior mirror trims. There are Black/yellow stripes with ‘GSR' lettering above the side sills with yellow painted bumpers in new R-Line design. The GSR rides on 19inch ‘Tornado' alloy
