By Paul Byrne

Ciaran Byrne is swapping the blue and yellow jersey of St Mochtas for the black of Aussie Rules side Carlton Blues FC after securing a two year contract with the AFL side. Ciaran, aged 18, hails from Louth Village and has been on Carlton’s radar for two years after impressing scouts with his on field performances for both St Mochtas and the Louth minors. This year Byrne was called up to the Louth senior team and made an instant impact scoring a wonderful goal in the qualifier against Antrim. Byrne underwent a twoweek trial with the Blues recently having initially caught the attention of the Melbourne club’s scouts at a re-

cruitment camp in Limerick two years ago. He was offered a two year rookie contract having impressed Carlton’s recruiting manager Wayne Hughes. Ciaran was given two weeks to decide whether or not to accept the offer and as he explains it wasn’t an easy decision to make. “No, it definitely wasn’t an easy decision to make. football with St Mochtas and this year I was picked for Louth Senior’s which was a very proud moment for myself. But this is a really

exciting opportunity and it’s a once in a lifetime chance so I decided that I would give it a go and see how I get on” explained Ciaran. “I was over in Melbourne recently getting

familiar with the set up over there and it was great to meet all the lads. There’s an Irish guy called Zach Tuohy who is from Laois who has been over there the last couple of years and I stayed with him for the 17 days I was there” added Ciaran. Byrne will meet up with his new teammates in November before travelling to Arizona in America for a high altitude training camp before returning home to his family for

Christmas. The following month he will be back in Melbourne where the hard work starts in earnest as he starts pre season training. Ciaran is under no illusions as to how tough the training will be for his new club. “I realise that I am going to have to put in a lot of hard work to do myself justice. These lads are professionals and their training are on a different level to what I’m used to. But I’m confident I can step

up to the mark and I’m looking forward to the challenge” he remarked. The club’s General Manager – Football Operations Andrew McKay said this week that Byrne, who carries Category B Rookie status for not having played AFL football in the past three seasons, had committed to terms. “Ciaran has agreed to join us as a Category B for 2014 and ’15,” McKay said.

McKay said that the club’s consultant had assisted Recruiting Manager Wayne Hughes in identifying Byrne’s talent in Ireland, and that the player had refined his skills under close supervision for the past 18 months. “Ciaran’s a good athlete and a good running player, in keeping with all Gaelic footballers,” McKay said. “He stands 6’2 or 6’3 in the old measurement and is quite an athletic player.” he concluded.

Relay for Life’s new home Continued from Pg 1 big Race Night for the whole family. Since the first Relay for Life in Ireland 4 years ago in Dundalk (the very first to be organised in Ireland) , this local event has raised more than a quarter of a million over that time in support of the work of the Irish Cancer Society. Linda Stewart who is chairperson for this years relay committee

expressed her delight that the relay has finally secured a permanent home. “While the support of the local businesses, fundraising teams and visitors has been phenomenal over the years, the most challenging aspect of organising the event has always been sourcing a fitting venue, which has a suitable track for the symbolic 24 hour walk against cancer, sufficient space for the many teams fundraising stalls, a band stage – and of course large crowds.” explained Linda. “Another aspect which has been a major issue for the organisers has been the unpredictable weather in October and darker evenings, which do not favour an outdoor venue. “From 2014 on Dundalk Relay for Life will be taking place at the Dundalk Racecourse, with the date of the event brought forward to the June bank holiday”, says Linda Steward, chair of the committee. “After reviewing a number of highly successful Relays in the past years, the committee reviewed

and evaluated our work with an effort to move on and make the event even better – something we felt we owed our commitment to the cause and of course all those who made the Relay grow year after year. We are delighted with the generous partnership we were offered by the Racecourse and excited as the new venue is permanent and ideal for a great 24 hour event for the whole family,” remarked Linda. To celebrate this new venue and to launch the 2014 Relay, Relay for Life will be hosting a fantastic fundraising Race night on Saturday the 5th of October which they have called ‘The Big Racing Night 2013- The Fastest Race Against Cancer’ The night will mark the beginning of a new era for Relay and the start of the fundraising leading up to the big 24 hour event in June 2014. On the night will be fun for all the family with all the fun of the races, raffles, and fine dining. In keeping with the relay philosophy of raising awareness, survivors of cancer will walk the track. Those who have

passed or who are battling cancer will be remembered in a ceremony where we release hundreds of balloons carrying ‘in memory’ or ‘in celebration’ messages which can be purchased on the night. Anybody who would like to partake in the survivor’s walk during the launch night should contact the relay for life through their email addressinfo@relay4life-dundalk.ie There is also an opportunity for local business to support the fight against cancer with race sponsorship, advertising opportunities and bookings for the restaurant. If you would like to offer sponsorship in any form please contact a team member, send us a message on facebook or email the relay4life team on info@ relay4life-dundalk.ie. Tickets for ‘The Big Racing Night’ fundraiser event can be obtained and bookings for the restaurant can be made from Monday, 26 August 2013 at Mizu or at any of the team events. Teenagers go on animal care course By Aine Kenny

A group of young people from Dundalk attended the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals course aimed specifically at 15-17 year old animal lovers. The participants in the course get trained to care and handle a wide variety of animals, including rabbits, cats, dogs, reptiles and even horses. Eilish Conroy, a teenager from Knockbridge, feels that the course was worth the €220. “It was a great experience, I really enjoyed it. I got to work with a lot of different animals and care for them. I loved working with the dogs. We did a lot of dog training, like taking them through agility courses.” Eilish said. “We also got to do a lot with horses which was amazing because I would never have got the opportunity to do so before.” Sallie Turnbull, also from Knockbridge and another student who went on the course, said that the opportunities they got in the course were brilliant. “We did so much with a variety of animals, mainly because the

DSPCA campus is so big and has so many facilities,” Sallie explained. “There’s facilities for cats and dogs of course, such as the kennels and the cattery, but there’s also stables, paddocks and grazing pastures, small animal sections, pig play area, goat and fowl areas. We got to groom dogs and look after the ones who were boarding while their owners were away on holidays.” she added. The students who took part in the course also got to go to Dublin Zoo. “The zoo was the best part in my opinion.” Eilish stated. “We were with the keepers so we got to see the animals extremely up close. It

was really interesting to see the animals from a different perspective. We even got to feed the elephants treats. They

were really gentle and the baby elephants were really cute. It really was a once in a life-time opportunity.” The students also got to bring down their own pets and work with them on the last day of the course. The DSPCA is one of the biggest rescue centres in Ireland. It facilitates for wild animals, such as foxes, badgers, hedgehogs and wild birds, as well as domesticated house pets. There is also a veterinary clinic on the campus for the sick or injured animals. On the completion of the course, the students are awarded a DSPCA Animal Care Certificate for their hard work over the two weeks.

Blackrock Road Race

The terrific weather has done wonders for everyone’s activity levels, and nowhere is this more evident than around Blackrock, where all ages and abilities have embraced their new adult athletic club. Blackrock Athletic Club is now busy preparing for the second year of its 4-mile road race. The race coincides with the Blackrock Seaside festival in the village. On Sunday August 18 runners took a route around the seaside roads of Blackrock. Reigning champion and great supporter of the event, Gary O’Hanlon easily retained his title from up and coming 19-year-old Thomas Moran from Dunshaughlin with Rory Kavanagh from Dunboyne

at Blackrock AC holding off Jim Gonnely to win in 22.17 from Jims 22.25 (4th and 5th overall). In the ladies O40 Dunleer’s Sandra Doheny won with NER’s Melanie Hearty 2nd. First Blackrock AC athlete home was coach Joe Cunningham in a little over 27 mins. The newly formed Blackrock Fit 4 Life club had a strong contingent with many running their first race and it was great to see the club singlet being worn by so many athletes. Special thanks to all who helped organise the event. It takes a lot of effort and organisation and without your help the event could not have been the success it was.

third. Gary’s time of 20.09 was outside his course record of 19.30 last year but having to run solo for the majority of the race it was never going to be an easy task to win the bonus for running sub 19 mins. North East Runners who provide valuable support to all events in the region were dominant in the ladies race with Suzy Macken (who just made it back in time from Dublin) winning in 26.11 and Karen McCrystal in 3rd. Local Blackrock runner Linda Meehan split the NER’s with a great 2nd place finish. Onto the 40+ category where the North East Oldies come into their own with National Masters O55 1500m champion and record holder Brian Lynch who coaches

Amy Broadhurst is back in training for next month’s World Championships and local man Dominic McKevitt has called on the people to Dundalk to give the recently crowned European Junior Featherweight Boxing Champion a big send off as she prepares to conquer the world. “I had the great pleasure of meeting Amy Broadhurst and her family and one could not feel anything but impressed.” remarked Dominic. “Amy is a great young lady and having met her wow I am so inspired not only with her talents but her attitude. She is totally focused in her quest and I know she will succeed but her manner is impeccable, courteous, and polite.” “The people of Dundalk and Ireland do not realise what they have in their midst with this family, perhaps this is because of their quiet unassuming nature, but they will hopefully realise this greatness that exists with 20 Irish Boxing Titles and their youngest Amy with Irish and European Titles, now contesting for The World Title. This is so unimaginable because it is like Dundalk FC not only winning the European Cup but now also competing for World Club Champions!” explained Dominic.

“Please get behind Amy and her great family, give them support and a great Dundalk ‘Send Off’ for the World Title in Bulgaria in September. This gives up hope and joy so much missing in our lives especially at these times of hardship.” he urged. Meanwhile Amy’s Dad and trainer Tony revealed that a local sports management sponsorship firm are in the process of securing sponsorship for Amy which will go a long way in helping secure the funds needed to travel to Bulgaria. “It’s a relief to get the financial side of things sorted out because it means we can now concentrate on the boxing” explained Tony. “We gave Amy two weeks off after the European Championships and she is now back in training building up slowly before we travel to Bulgaria next month. Obviously I would have liked to give her a bit longer off but the World’s are only four weeks away now so we’re training twice a day now to get Amy in the best possible shape. We had a bucket collection up in Oriel Park last Friday evening and I’d like to thank everybody for their support. It’s all systems go now for Bulgaria and hopefully Amy can perform to the best of her abilities and do herself proud” he added.

It takes two for Dundalk Dog Rescue Picnic

Dundalk Dog Rescue are hosting their final Picnic in the Park of the Summer this August 25 Ice House Hill. The day kicks off at 2pm and is packed with activities for both dogs and owners and aims to raise some funds for the local animal rescue. This years theme is ‘it takes two.’ Dogs and dog-owners will have the opportunity to strut their stuff at the ‘We all love our dogs’ dog show, which will give awards in five categories Perkiest Pooch, Most like their Owner, Waggiest Tail, Cutest Crossbreed and Rockin’ Rescue. There is also the opportunity for owners and their dogs to get some experience of agility training in the Fast and Furious Frolickers agility circuit. Organisers say that it is also a great way for both to stay fit. There will be a dog grooming demonstration on the day, letting owners know the do’s and don’ts of dog grooming. This will be particularly useful for the winner of the raffle. The top prize on the day is a ‘Doggie photos shoot’ at home with the winners prize pet. 2013 has proved to be a busy year for the team in Dundalk Dog Rescue who have helped more than 500 dogs so far this year. Dundalk Dog Rescue was set up in 2005 by Ann Moore and ever since Ann and a group of volunteers have been saving dogs who face euthanasia. Dogs that are found and end up in the pound have only five days to be reclaimed or re-homed before they are killed. Every single penny you spend/donate on the day goes directly to the charity.

There was much excitement at Killin Golf Club as the members there competed for Captain Donard McCabe’s Claret Jug. The course was buzzing as players worked to find their game in the glorious sunshine. The course was in excellent condition thanks to the great work of green keeper Ciaran Dunne and his assistant Darren. Adam McDonnell won on the day and as Gerry Rogers who came in as runner-up. Gerry has been treading the fairways for a long time and has never been so close to winning a major. Organisers offerred their congratulations to both and to all their winners. “It was great to see juvenile Andrew Connol-

‘Wicket’ time coming for Cricket Club With the 2013 Cricket season approaching it’s last few weeks Dundalk Cricket Club can be said to have found their level in their third league season. The first team had a spectacular league debut in 2011, further built their reputation as Leinster Cricket’s hot shots in 2012 and in 2013 have slowed a little bit but built on to the foundations laid down in earlier years. After winning their second Leinster title in 2012 as Division 9 champions, albeit narrowly taking the title, the firsts were promoted to Division 8. This is where Cricket in the Leinster league starts to take on a tougher and more robust form and where lower down the firsts had had it pretty much their own way here they were perhaps for the first time really going to have a fight on their hands. Initial signs were business as usual with a first match win in April at home against Dundrum 2 by 42 runs, but from then things began to go awry and the next three matches against Civil Service 2, Adamstown 1 in the Middle Cup and Malahide 4 were all losses. It wasn’t until July that the winning habit returned with a narrow win over Leinster 4 for 11 runs followed by an improved effort and a 2 wicket win over Civil Service 2. The end of July saw another setback with loss to Hills 3 by 5 wickets but the impetus has since returned and at the beginning of August on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th the first team had back to back wins against Dundrum 2 and Wicklow County 1. The firsts are currently

Paddy Farrell from Dundalk Cricket Club preparing for a catch

sitting at fourth place in Division 8, comfortably out of the relegation zone, there are five games left in the season all at home and a run of victories could possibly see them in contention for promotion but an all out win of the division is unlikely for this year. The quality of first team squad members is improving year on year currently sitting at the top of the batting averages with a test like 49.75 is Sajan Jayaseelan who regularly puts on batting master-classes while playing, in the bowling Phil Osborn sits at the top with a 13.00 average and economy rate of 4.03 but right behind him is the young pretender and product of Dundalk Cricket Clubs youth system Waleed Shahid with figures of a 14.33 average and economy rate of 7.17 The club and the first team started to attract a flurry of new members mid season one

notable addition being Mike Bentley who represented Zimbabwe at U14 U16 U19, Mike hit 38 runs on debut for the club and has an impressive bowling economy rate of 3.39. The second team have in contrast laboured this year, avoiding relegation from Division 12 last year they have struggled to make their mark, but have have never given up hope. They have played 10 league matches and one Junior Cup match and all have been losses, but there has been a bright spot in the gloom and the seconds posted an impressive 4 wicket win against Clontarf 6 on the 11th August at Clontarf’s own ground which is renowned as one of Ireland’s only official One Day International Cricket grounds and scene of the recent international series against Pakistan. The seconds have four more league games, two of them at home, it’s hoped that with this win the squad

may have turned the corner and there is a renewed spirit in the squad, it is probably too late to avoid relegation but a few more wins would set the tone for next season. The club continues to make strides in other areas; the club has long had a stated aim of starting a Ladies team and the process has begun. Sisters Deborah and Louise Challoner have been welcome additions and are now regular second team squad members. Deborah has been appointed to the committee as Ladies Development Officer and to this end Ladies training sessions have been taking place on Wednesday evenings with a core of around 8 players and it is hoped that a full competitive Ladies team can be launched in 2014. Youth development continues at pace and the aforementioned Waleed Shahid is a good example of this starting to make regular first team starts where his batting average of 9.25 is perhaps not a true reflection of his batting prowess his second team average of 19.33 is perhaps a fairer one. Honourable mentions must also go to Michael Mullen and Kalkeren Kieran who have shown enormous improvements since first starting to pick up bat and ball. The future is looking bright for the club with new members an increasing youth squad and an ever growing band of supporters, for those interested in joining or learning more about the club please refer to the website dundalkcricketclub. com

Local young people spent the weekend ‘Upstate.’ Following a physical theatre workshop programme with over 120 young people during the summer, ten young people completed the auditioning process to form the first Upstate Youth Ensemble. The multi-cultural youth performance ensemble then created ‘Shared’ over five days during an intensive devising process with director Stephen Murray and facilitator Dee Burke. Stephen commented, “Devising performance is an exciting, collaborative way to work. This week has re-confirmed my belief in this way of approaching performance. We hope to have tested the boundaries of what is perceived as performance. We hope to have collectively made something that is surprising, thought provoking and entertaining.” Along with artists and collaborators Stephen Murray, Dee Burke, Vivienne Byrne, Pauric Hackett, Ken Finegan and John McGovern, the Upstate Youth Ensemble

The youth group who spent the weekend ‘Upstate’ at An Tain Theatre

includes group members Lorna McAllister, Steven Jimenez, Lyndsey Keating, Catriona Quigley, Anastasia Metluka, Amber Duffy, Andy Gallagher, Leah Rossiter, Victoria Ugwuja, and Mark Hughes. On Friday and Saturday evening this group of young people shared a space with an audience (150 people in total). They created a shared ‘civic aesthetic space’ where they performed ideas and raised questions for all of us to consider during and after

the presentation. After the performance ended, each audience member received a text from the performers, a tangible thought to take away with them. The Upstate Youth Ensemble will continue working during the year, and hope to interrogate and challenge Louth audiences as they grow and develop. Declan Mallon, Director of Upstate Theatre Project, explained, “One of the reasons we developed this ensemble is to try and encourage

teenagers and young adults who haven’t previously participated in art projects to take part in something a little bit different. Upstate likes to think that it is never too late to try something new. “We have found that the impact of such collaboration informs how we make performance. The only way of knowing how to make new modes of performance is to attempt it, but for us to continue to experiment we need people to work with.”

I remember when I was a young child playing with my sister pretending that I was a secretary so that was probably what I wanted to be when I was young.

Back To School

T

he summer is coming to an end and the final preparations are underway in hundreds of homes for the return to school. The financial pressure on parents is growing as the cost of going to school

increases. However here are a number of ways to cut the costs involved. Some parents and guardians will be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. In order to be

entitled to the payment the applicant must be currently claiming certain social welfare payments, or taking part in training, education or employment schemes. Children must be between

Back To School the ages of 4 and 22 before September 30, 2013, in order to qualify. However some changes were made to the system of administration this year which means they need not reapply, and the payments will be made automatically. The Department of Education also offer Book Grant Schemes for primary and post primary students, this is administered

by the schools principles. And for those parents whose children are facing state examinations this year, there are exemptions to the payment of examination fees for Junior and Leaving Certificate which are expected in February. These are administered through the medical card offices and forms for these can be obtained there.

However whether you are entitled to assistance or not, cutting costs, and ensuring value for money are still paramount concerns for those sending their children to school in the coming weeks. Recent research indicates that the cost of the ‘return to school’ can be as much as €400 for primary pupils and €800 for secondary students.

The National Consumer Agency (NCA)also has a back to school budget planner which can help keep parents be prepared for the coming expenses. They also offer some helpful money saving tips. Shopping around is vital to get the best value for your child. Uniforms can be the biggest back to school expense, the NCA advise parents

to keep an eye out for promotions. Good quality rucksacks are also advised as they should last a few years and save money in the long-run. They also advise on how to save on stationary. Buying in bulk can be cheaper overall than buying items one by one, and there are some great offers to be had at the moment around Dundalk .

traditional music groups, such as Skylark. He has also worked with none other than Rod Stewart. Donal Lunny is a member of the hugely successful Irish traditional band Planxty, which rose to fame during the 1970’s. Planxty is also quite well known to the younger generation of Ireland as well, being one of the traditional Irish groups that Junior Cert. music students study.

British Rocker set to play in September Acclaimed British rocker and song writer Graham Parker is set to play The Spirit Store on Friday September 20th. He is the lead singer in the band Graham Parker & the Rumour. His witty lyrics caught the attention of critics, despite most people considering him a moderate commercial success. He can count Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Frank Black among his fans. At age 24, Graham Parker, who was then a petrol-pump attendant from Surrey, drove up to London to meet with musicians who were similar to him. He was confident that his music was better, stronger and far more

Graham Parker original than anything on the radio, and wanted the support of a backing band. His confidence and original lyrics were key factors in his success.

Graham Parker & the Rumour ‘s 1979 album, Squeezing Out Sparks, sold a quarter of a million copies, and is hailed as a masterpiece. The rocker, despite being 62, is still gigging to the delight of rock fans everywhere. This show is not to be missed if you enjoy class-conscious lyrics and energy-fuelled music. His music has spanned decades and many call his lyrics “genius”. Graham is a must-see for rock fans everywhere. Tickets cost €20. To book, visit the Spirit Store website. To contact the Spirit Store directly, call them on 0429352697.

Exciting news for dance school Tara Erraught and

Opening its doors for the first time in 43 years, Dundalk based Scoil Rince Mona Ni Rodaigh is to hold its first ever Open Evening on Friday, August 30th. Along with meeting teachers and learning about classes, locations and schedules, prospective students and their parents will be treated to some of the fastest feet in the East as students perform both traditional and contemporary routines, giving a flavour of what it is the school has to offer. This season at SR Mona Ni Rodaigh also sees the return of one of its brightest stars and Prodijig sensation Darren Casey who is returning to his old Alma Mater to share some of the skills he learned whilst touring with the best in the business. On a hiatus from life in the limelight, Darren began working with some of the older dancers late last year for the school’s ‘Christmas Cracker’ show (pictured ). Having enjoyed the experience immensely, he offered his help on an ongoing basis. School Principal Móna says ‘It’s wonderful to have the support of past pupils like Darren who inject an element of youth and a fresh enthusiasm into the dancers. Darren has incredible skills and will be an asset to the school.’ The art form has been brought to new heights and students of Irish dance have been afforded incredible opportunities, the likes of which weren’t available when

I was dancing, that’s for sure!’ Móna teaches alongside her two daughters Ciara & Dearbhla Lennon- both of whom were principals in both Riverdance and Lord of the Dance and who , in recent years, have become increasingly active in the development of the school. ‘We learned from the best’ says Dearbhla of Mona ‘and we’re embracing the challenge of passing our skills to a new generation of dancers. We each have different attributes that we bring to the table in terms of solo dancing, team dancing and of course the more contemporary type of dancing. I have no doubt Darren will be a great asset in this regard!’ Ciara is relishing the challenge of bringing dancers to the next level. ‘I’m very excited to see the new generation of “Mona” dancers bring back to Dundalk the

accolades we’ve achieved in the past. Aspiring students can check out what our school has to offer at our Open Evening later this month- get the chance to meet the teachers, see some fast feet in action and get a feel for what the school is all about’. Dance star Darren Casey from Fatima, Dundalk, started Irish dancing from the age of 8 for the hugely successful Scoil Rince Mona ni Rodaigh. After becoming Ulster Champion, earning podium places at all majors and winning 3 World Ceili titles , Darren was invited to join the cast of Riverdance in 2008. “I can’t wait to get started in September,” enthused Darren. “It’s great to be able to give something back to the school which gave so much to me and I’m really looking forward to passing on my experience.

Tara Erraught, Dundalk’s brilliant Irish mezzo-soprano has been wowing audiences around Europe since 2008 when she graduated from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and left for Germany to become a member of the opera studio at the renowned Bavarian State Opera in Munich since 2008. Tara’s star really began to rise when she unexpectedly replaced an ailing colleague at the Bavarian State Opera. Since then, she has taken the opera world by storm, singing title roles at the Vienna State Opera, the Hamburg State Opera (La Cenerentola) and the Glyndebourne Festival (Der Rosenkavalier). Last Sunday Tara returned to her home of Dundalk to take part in Geraldine McGee’s ‘Operatic Favourites’ show which took place in Wellington Hall. Geraldine is a well known singing teacher in Dundalk and it was she who Tara started taking singing lessons with when she was just nine years old. Brendan McFadden, a huge fan of Tara’s, has travelled to Vienna to watch her perform and he was there last week to watch what he described as a ‘wonderful event’ “The people of Dundalk should be proud of Tara. She has a wonderful singer and her career to date has been remarkable. It was lovely to watch her and so many other beautiful singers on stage in Dundalk on Sunday afternoon” remarked Brendan.

Tara Erraught and Geraldine McGee Geraldine McGee was also full of praise for her old student and was delighted with how her show was received. “It’s been a long time since a show like this was put on in Dundalk and I have to say I was very happy with how it all went. We were honoured to have Tara here and as well as that we had 16 fantastic soloists including James Brennan and James McCreanor who made their debuts. “Tara was the star of the evening though and I have to say she is the same now as she was before she went away and had all her success. She mixed with everybody and was encouraging all the young people on the night before they went on stage.” explained Geraldine.

The Dundalk branch of the Arsenal Supporters Club are having their AGM in Jimmy’s bar on the 3rd September in Jimmy’s Bar on Park St, Dundalk. The meeting begins at 8pm and all new members are welcome. For further information contact Gerard Norton on 0867200779.
