FOUR St Vincent girls who spent almost two weeks in Romania helping out underprivileged children arrived back in Dundalk last week and are already planning on returning next year for a longer visit. Zoe Nevin, Aoife Clarke, Siomha Murphy and Marie Christina McManus flew to Romania on August 5 to help out the Blackrock based Crosscause charity which has been caring for orphans and poor children in Romania for over ten years. The girls who are all members of the Red Cross decided they wanted to do something worthwhile for the summer and after talking to Conor Hughes from
Crosscause they decided that they wanted to help his charity out. The girls ran a summer camp for the residents of Casa Bridget as well as the children who attend the day centre each day for a meal, shower and schooling. According to Aoife the camp went well and the children really enjoyed the classes. “They are such lovely children and it was a joy to be around them. They are very poor and they have nothing yet they are so full of fun and always smiling. We travelled around the village giving food and clothing to the locals and it was a real eye opener seeing some of the conditions these people are living in.” explained Aoife. See page 14

Jonny is thrilled at landing top escort title at Rose of Tralee By Paul Byrne LOUTH may not have had a Rose at this year’s Rose of Tralee festival but in Jonny McGailey they were ably represented as he walked away with the prize of ‘Rose of Tralee Escort of the Year’ This year’s Rose of Tralee Escort of the Year was revealed last Monday evening with Dromiskin man Jonny announced as the winner. The St Joseph’s club man was understandably delighted with the
honour, but says the prize could have gone to any of his fellow escorts. “I have to say that they were an absolute fantastic group of lads and I’ve made plenty of friends down in Tralee during what was a brilliant experience. All the lads did a great job and it was a bit of a shock when Daithí called my name out on Monday night”, admitted Jonny. Jonny who was escort to Leitrim Rose Edwina Guckian, won a 44 piece silver-plated canteen engraved with his fami-
ly crest, a gent’s collection of Newbridge Jewellery and a cheque for €1000. However, according to the man himself the biggest thing he brought away from the festival were brilliant memories of what was a fantastic experience. “It was just a great week down there and I’m so glad that I applied to be a part of it all. It was my first ever time down at the Rose festival and it really is a brilliant week. I was chosen to be the Leitrim Rose Edwina Guckian’s
escort and we got on really well. My job was to make sure she had everything and escort her to all the various events that go on around the town”, explained Jonny. “Edwina was a great girl and she represented her county very well. Everybody down there should be very proud of her. “To win the Escort of the Year just capped off a brilliant week for me and I’ve come away from the whole thing with so many fantastic memories” added Jonnie.

ages will continue on the Carrick Road after former owner of Cooley distillery John Teeling agreed to take over the Great Northern Brewery site in Dundalk. Teeling’s company IWC will take over when brewing giants Diageo move their operations to St James Gate in Dublin this September. They intend to start operations at the site early next year with the first shipment of mature whiskey expected to in 2017. It is thought that some of the current equipment will be used to create grain, pot still and malt Irish whiskey although Teeling’s company have said they will be making a “significant investment” in additional
modifications and equipment. The investment will see a total of 80 jobs being created at what will be called the, ‘Great Northern Distillery’ with 40 of the jobs in the distillery itself. With limited supply of Irish whiskey on the market since Beam Inc switched Cooley’s focus to its own brands, cutting all third party supply contracts, Teeling is keen to build IWC as as an “efficient low cost quality whiskey distiller to supply… the private label and bulk whiskey sectors as well as to the emerging craft distilling sector”. John Teeling hit the headlines in 2011 when he sold whiskey distiller Cooley for €72m to US company Jim Beam.
Dundalk Chamber PRO Paddy Malone was understandably delighted with the news that Mr Teeling had agreed to take over the Carrick Rd site. “When Diageo announced the closure of the Great Northern Brewery (Harp) I issued a statement emphasising the need to find a replacement industry for the plant. There had been a number of alternatives uses suggested to me and I had set those out at the time. “Within 24 hours John Teeling contacted me and over the next few months we made steady progress. When I then informed Diageo as to the person on whose behalf I was enquiring matters accelerated”, he concluded.

Emma Carolan debut novel Dundalk Leader 28th August 2013

Muirhevna Mór’s in the recent release of Emma Carolan passion her debut novel “Leap for writing has resulted of Faith”. Emma who
works in ebay in Dundalk started writing what turned out to be her debut novel just four months ago and is understandably delighted that the book has now hit the shelves. “I’ve always loved writing and it’s a bit of a dream come true for me to see a book with my name on it inside a bookshop” explains Emma. “It’s a fictional romantic novel and it’s my very first book so I’m excited that it’s all done and dusted and available for people to read now. I
wrote a lot of it at night time after work and I’d find hours would go by without me realising it as I got lost inside the book” she added. “I am currently thinking of ideas for a second book. The ending of ‘Leap of Faith’ has left room for a sequel so it’s possible there may be more to come from some of these characters” concluded Emma. Leap of Faith introduces readers to Katriona Warnock and Jason McCormick in a story of what happens when strangers eyes lock igniting a world of excitement and passion drenched in the unknown. The result is a calamity of fear, heartbreaking
truths, and the possibility of true love. Katriona is a strong, independent work-aholic struggling to let go of her past demons. She has spent the better part of her adult life trying to earn the money and power she’s been given. Feeling unworthy she’s convinced herself that she doesn’t deserve to have a life outside of her company, or a loving relationship for that matter. Jason is a sexy, intelligent, shrewd businessman who grew up on the run. His no nonsense attitude, and green eyes have warmed Katriona’s frozen heart bringing her back to life. With the ability to feel again she
is bombarded with the constant worry of losing him and the life she so badly wants. Katriona must find a way to let her inhibitions go or she could lose the only man she has ever truly loved – forever. Carolan’s romance novel begs the questions: Can strangers become lovers? Can lovers become best friends? To find out the answers to all these questions you can buy Emma’s book in Carroll’s bookshop in Park Street, Dundalk. Emma is currently in talks with Amazon, Kindle and Easons and she hopes the book will be available in all these places soon.

Students return to DkIT The annual migration of students to college has begun and Dundalk is yet again set to benefit form the influx of students attending DkIT. The college semester is set to begin next week and the college is preparing to welcome a new batch of students. Last year there was a growing recognition that there was
a deficit in the number of suitable people from the area to take up jobs in areas that are set for significant growth in Ireland such as IT and languages. And the students and college has responded, according to the college spokesperson IT is as popular as ever, there has been a particularly high uptake in the interest in the college new
apps development course, BSc Honours in Interactive Applications Design & Development. Accounting, finance, PR and business studies, social care, early childhood studies and veterinary nursing are still attracting students to the college too. And there has been a boost in popularity of agricul-
ture courses at the college. With the costs of attending college going-up, last year’s assurances from PayPal that positions for students and graduates would be made available came as some comfort. Students at DkIT can also look forward to the opening of the sports centre later this year.

Louth teens awarded Foróige leadership certs Four Louth teenagers have graduated from a programme designed to inspire them to become great leaders. Louth Teenagers Cillian Mullen, Katie Reynolds and Derry Bedford from Drogheda and Claire Simms from Dunleer were joined by more than 300 other young people from across Ireland and around the world during a recent graduation ceremony to mark the end of the 5th annual Foróige Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life International Youth Conference. The leadership programme and annual conference is run by Foróige in partnership with ICCUSA, the Irish Chamber of Commerce - United States of America. The programme is open to teenagers in every country and the conference was attended by young delegates from the USA, Palestine, South Korea, Northern Ireland, India, Nigeria and Kenya. As part of the week-long conference, inspirational lectures were given by Olympic boxing silver medallist Kenneth Egan as well as the Irish head of internet giant PayPal Louise Phelan. The programme also includes workshops on team building, critical thinking and communication skills and peer discussions on matters of global importance. Hollywood star Matt Mc-

Coy acts as the ongoing ambassador to the leadership programme and mentored delegates during the conference. Matt McCoy has most recently featured in some of the USA’s biggest shows The Mentalist and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, though he is probably best known for starring in two ‘Police Academy’ films, ‘L.A. Confidential’ and ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle’. Speaking at the launch, Matt said: “This is the fifth year I’ve been back in Ireland for the conference and I must admit, this has been the best yet. The young people attending have gained skills to become true leaders of their own lives, of their communities, of busi-
nesses, of causes and of countries. “They have the drive and passion to make the world around them a better place. It really is inspirational and I’m delighted to be in the front row witnessing the first steps in the journey of our next generation of world leaders.” Foróige Chief Executive Seán Campbell said: “Now more than ever, we need to help young people cultivate the skills and qualities they need to become great leaders. “Young people who take part in the conference look at themselves differently, they see that they have the power to stand up and be counted as citizens of the world. Not only that, they see that they have
the capability and the talents to make the world around them a better one, not just for themselves but for generations to come. It’s a hugely positive experience and one that Foróige is extremely proud of.” The young people must complete three modules in order to fully graduate from the programme. At the end of the conference, the 300 delegates received certificates for completing various stages of the programme. The conference comes after the recent publication of an independent study into the Foróige Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life Programme which found that teenagers who actively en-
gage in leadership training manifest key skills including social skills, self-control, confidence, assertiveness and a sense of achievement. The study, conducted by Dr. Sue Redmond at NUI Galway and overseen by Professor Mark Brennan from Penn State University, USA, was conducted over an 18 month period amongst 400 young people who participated in the Foróige Albert Schweitzer Leadership for Life Progamme. The study also found that an increase in female representation in leadership roles throughout society, including business, politics and public service, is needed.

May Toal CD Launch Retired schoolteacher May Toal has been enchanting audiences with her stories and poems for years as she tells tales which were inspired by her hometown of Listowel in North County Kerry. Having been asked by people to put her stories down in print or on record, May recently decided to record a CD with a sample of some of her wonderful poems and stories. The CD is called ‘Harvesting Memories’ and will officially be launched in Sexton’s Bar on the Dublin Rd, tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7:30 pm. The CD includes fifteen stories and poems which include humorous tales of nuns eating Magnum Ice Creams, the joys of a child experiencing Christmas Day as well as touching on issues such as emigration and her fond recollections of life in North Kerry as a child. May, who left Kerry as a 17 year old, ended up settling in Dundalk over 50 years ago was a primary school teacher

in Castletown N.S, Realt Na Mara and Blackrock. She has always had storytelling in her bones and she puts this down to her father who was always telling his children stories as they were growing up. “My Dad Joseph was a wonderful character and he always encouraged myself and my sisters to express ourselves and to question everything. I suppose back then children were encouraged to be seen
but not heard but my parents didn’t subscribe to that. “Dad was a bit different to a lot of the men around North Kerry and he’d always be dressed in bright colours and he stood out from the rest of the people who dressed in grey, brown or black clothes. He was a schoolteacher and he’d cycle home on his bike every evening and ask my mother what I had got up to that day. He would then tell me a story every single night when I was in bed embellishing and enhancing the story of my own experiences that day.” explains May. May adored listening to her father’s storytelling and she carried on the art throughout the years as she passed on stories to friends family and even her pupils. “Even to this day I get some of my former pupils coming up to me telling me how much they enjoyed listening to my stories. I’ve always believed in storytelling as a method of teaching children and I truly believe in the power of
a good story” enthused May. “I still drive down to North Kerry a few times every year and I still get that old familiar feeling of home as I drive around the bendy roads that take me to Listowel. I write all the time and I have so many stories and poems in my head that have still to be told” says May. “This CD is a selection of some of the favourite stories and poems that I have written and I hope people will come to Sextons on Thursday night and enjoy them. I will be reading a few of them on stage and I will be joined on the night by Larry McArdle who is a wonderful raconteur as well as Mona Daly Fochler who will also be co-hosting the evening.” she added. May’s CD Harvesting Memories also features beautiful background music which was created by Daithí Kearney from DKIT. It costs €10 and will be available from Sexton’s tomorrow evening. For further information about May’s CD call 0863023427.

Eadaoin McCrave off to Euro Championship Just eighteen months after joining the Irish Martial Arts Academy in Dundalk, eleven year old Eadaoin Mc Crave is about to compete for a medal at the WAKO European Cadets and Juniors Championships which will take place in Krynica-Zdroj, Poland this September. Eadaoin, who attends St Fursey’s National School in Haggardstown, joined The Irish Martial Arts Academy in Williamsons Mall at the start of 2012 and according to her trainer Eamon Lawlor she immediately showed promise in her chosen discipline of ‘Musical Forms’. “When she first joined us I could tell straight away that she was very talented” explained Eamon. Eadaoin takes part in musical forms which is a sort of imaginary fight against one or more opponents in which the performer uses techniques coming from

Oriental Martial Arts to specifically chosen music. She is very flexible and she is very quick to learn which makes her a joy to teach” he added. Over the last year Eadaoin has entered many competitions around the country gaining valuable experience and that experience culminated in a magnificent second place at the National championships which
enabled her to take part in next month’s World Championships. Eadaoin is understandably excited about travelling to Poland for the prestigious competition and is counting down the days until she arrives in Poland. “I’ve been training hard with Eamonn and we’ve upped our sessions as we get ready for the competition next
month. I really love musical forms and Eamon is a brilliant teacher so hopefully I do well over there.” Eadaoin and Eamon thanked everybody who have supported them so far in their fundraising efforts to pay for the trip to Poland especially Mallocas and The Fairways who have supported the young starlet every step of the way.

App to check for clean fuel The Irish Petrol Retailers Association has launched a scheme that will help drivers avoid using illegal fuels and damaging their cars. The quality assurance scheme will see participating garages agree to random, independent, spot-checks to ensure their fuel is legitimate. As the tests are passed the garages will be listed on database of approved garages. Customers can then check the location of approved garages via a smartphone app. The App locates the nearest petrol station, lists their services and offers direction, and also has
the most up-to-date fuel prices as entered by the Irish Petrol Retailers Association and not a third party. “This scheme will ensure motorists receive legitimate clean fuel when they fill up their vehicles at the pumps. Not only is the proliferation of illegal fuel causing untold damage to engines, it is costing the exchequer up to €200m a year in lost tax revenue,” said Senator Mary Moran. The scheme was instigated by local retailers and 15 petrol stations in the county have already signed up to the scheme. It is also
expected to help battle the illegal fuel trade and reduce the damage it causes in the area. “Fuel laundering is a scourge in our society. It destroys our environment, wrecks cars, steals from the taxpayer and provides a ready income to criminals many of whom are associated with republican paramilitaries. “I have raised this issue many times and will continue to do so until it is eliminated,” said Ged Nash TD at the launch of the scheme in Dundalk last week. Dealgan Boxing Club 75th anniversary Bernard Dunne and Ken Egan will help Dealgan Boxing Club celebrate 75 years in existence this October at a boxing gala dinner show which will also include 12 more Irish champions. The club are based in Marian Park having bought the hall over 15 years ago spending over €100,000 with the aid of Peace and Reconciliation funding to transform it into a clubroom, compete with two rings, dressing rooms and showers. PRO for the club Anto Donnelly is understandably looking forward to the gala celebrations and says it’s a great chance for people to meet some of the best boxers this country has produced. “We are delighted to announce our Gala Boxing Dinner Show which will take place on Saturday October 5th in the Fairways hotel Dundalk. We’ll have no less than 14 All Ireland champions who will be in action on this auspicious occasion to showpiece our most successful sport. “We’ll also have former world champion Bernard Dunne and Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan coming down as guests of honour and I’m sure they’ll have a few stories to tell on the night.” explained Anto. Restricted number of tickets at €50 are on sale now and can be purchased by ringing Dealgan

boxing club at 0863748688 or 087 0528170 or else emailing info@irishboxing.ie. Corporate tables are also available. Included in the price of the ticket is a four course meal, boxing, live music and entry into the nightclub. There will also be an awards ceremony on the evening including the ‘Joe Ashmore’ memorial trophy for best boxer of the night. The ‘Eddie Maguire’ Memorial trophy for best club boxer of the year and finally the ‘Willie Moore’ memorial shield for best junior boxer of the year. The club is open to all to par-
take, girls and boys from age 11 to 35 from the entire Dundalk area. The club was founded in 1938 and operated from a number of different locations in town over the years, including the former technical school at Chapel Street and from premises at Park Street. The late Liam Moore was known as the town’s ‘Mr Boxing’ and was the mainstay of the club for years. There is a strong emphasis in developing juvenile talent in the club and that has been seen to great effect in recent months with the success of Amy Broadhurst over the past year.
Louth Hospital report criticised Local councillor and campaigner to save services at Louth County Hospital, Tomas Sharkey, has said that he is extremenly disappointed that the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) failed to recognise the need for improvements in the Laundry department of Louth County Hospital following their inspection there last month. The HIQA published the report on the hygiene levels in Louth County Hospital following an unannounced inspection there in July. The report found that the overall compliance levels at the hospital were good but that there were some issues identified in some areas. Bed frames were found to be unclean in some wards, paint and chipped surfaces were also noted as problems to be rectified. They concluded that there was evidence “of practice that was not compliant with the National Standards for the
Cllr Tomas Sharkey
Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections in both areas assessed in Louth County Hospital.” It found that the environment and patient equipment in the Minor Injuries Unit was generally clean but that the Stepdown ward was generally unclean with some exceptions. “I am sure that the staff in the hospital will do all they can to improve some matters that were noticed but the government and HSE needs to be brought to task on the vast majority of the points raised, “ said Tomas Sharkey. “The HSE needs to ensure that the hospital has
enough staff to ensure the equipment and surfaces can be washed more regularly. We have seen jobs being transferred out of Dundalk and on to the Lourdes in Drogheda over recent years,” said Tomas. While the inspectors did comment on the laundry services in the hospital, they did not comment on the practice of transporting the laundry to Drogheda for cleaning because the boiler in Louth County Laundry is still broken. “I am extremely disappointed that HIQA did not pick up on the issue of the hospital laundry. For months now dirty linen has been transported in a van to Drogheda because the HSE hasn’t fixed a boiler in Dundalk’s laundry. When that linen is washed, it comes back to Dundalk in the back of the same van that it lay in when soiled. HIQA needs to look at the consequences of the lack of funding in our hospitals,” he added.

Wee County darts players impress in Ennis event Louth and Proud was the shout in Ennis this weekend and despite not taking home the top prize Mark Connolly and John Donnelly were the two darts players who caught the attention of all at the Irish masters Weekend. John was competing in the Senior Event along side his stable mates from the Louth team John O’Brien and Gerry Rice. All three travelled down the night before and Donnelly and Rice competed in a Doubles Tournament on the Saturday. The Louth men had chances in the end were beaten by opponents with international experience. They sat back and watched McDonald and Cullen go on to win the final.
The Louth contingent grew on Sunday as Dermot Connolly made sure Louth were represented in the Youth Competition by chauffeuring his two sons Robert and Mark along with Jack Mc Kenna and Jason Finnegan to Ennis on the morning. First up for Louth was John O’Brien in the Senior competition facing Eddie Cull from Cork where he was unlucky to lose out. John Donnelly was facing James O’Connor from Tipperary and came back well to win, while Gerry Rice did likewise against Dwayne McEvoy from Westmeath. Gerry lost out in the next match to leave John Donnelly as the only Louth representative.
Donnelly faced the country’s most experienced player, Sean McGowan, in the last 16 and despite a brilliant display, lost out narrowly. The Youths competition saw Jack McKenna get through to the second round, while Mark Connolly defeated Jason Finnegan to set up a meeting with his brother Robert in the quarter-final. In the end it was Mark who came through to win. After winning through is semifinal, Mark faced the very talented Ronan McDonagh of Sligo in the decider, but a quick start from his opponent left him with an uphill task and despite his best efforts, the Louth player was defeated.

Call to oppose budget cuts Brendan Moore, a spokesperson for the Post Polio Support Group has appealed to local TD’s not to support any kinds of cuts to rates or to the household package in this year’s budget. “We are asking Gerald Nash,
Fergus O’Dowd, Seamus Kirk, Gerrry Adams and Peter Fitzpatrick to tell ministers Michael Noonan and James O’Reilly that enough is enough and for them to leave OAP’s and disabled people alone.” he explained.
“People with disabilities are calling on Dail Eireann to ratify the UN convention on the rights of people with disabilities giving everyone in society equal opportunity whatever their disability”, Mr Moore continued.
From page 1 Four St Vincent girls who spent almost two weeks in Romania helping out underprivileged children arrived back in Dundalk last week and are already planning on returning next year for a longer visit. Zoe Nevin, Aoife Clarke, Siomha Murphy and Marie Christina McManus flew to Romania on August 5 to help out the Blackrock based Crosscause charity which has been caring for orphans and poor children in Romania for over ten years. The girls who are all members of the Red Cross decided they wanted to do something worthwhile for the summer and after talking to Conor Hughes from Crosscause they decided that they wanted to help his charity out. The girls ran a summer camp for the residents of Casa Bridget as well as the children
who attend the day centre each day for a meal, shower and schooling. According to Aoife the camp went really well and the children really enjoyed the classes. “They are such lovely children and it was a joy to be around them. They are very poor and they have nothing yet they are so full of fun and always smiling. We travelled around the village giving food and clothing to the locals and it was a real eye opener seeing some of the conditions these people are living in.” explained Aoife. The girls were so inspired by their trip that they are already thinking of returning next year for another visit to Casa Bridget. “We all absolutely loved the experience over there and it would be great to go back for a little longer next time. We had fundraisers before we went to Romania and all the money
that we raised we used to buy paint and materials for the class. We also brought the children out to a lovely forest where we had a barbecue which the children really enjoyed”, added Siomha. As well as running the summer camp the four girls rolled up their sleeves and used their artistic talents to spruce up a local rundown playground which was in dire need of repair. Swings were repaired and bright colours used to freshen up the old playground as the local children watched on. The four girls returned to St Vincents secondary school yesterday (Tuesday) where they will now focus their attention on the Leaving Cert as they prepare for their exams next June. After that the girls hope to return to Romania and renew friendships from their inspiring trip to Casa Bridget.

Historic first day for Colaiste Lú Deirdre Uí Liathain, Stiúrhóir, Colaiste Lú with pupils and staff at the school
From page one their parents and guardians were warmly welcomed by the excited staff led by Stiúrthóir Deirdre Uí Liatháin, Ceann Bliana Maria Nic Eochaidh and Ceann Bliana Mícheál Ó Caoilte. “We are delighted to welcome our first group of students on this momentous occasion. We have been working towards this day for a
long time and now we are looking forward to setting off on a new journey together as a school community” said Deirdre. “There’s a great sense of positivity and opportunity among the teachers as we look forward to a bright future for these students in Coláiste Lú”, Maria added. Students were at the centre of the first day
at Coláiste Lú, where the motto ‘Cúram, Forbairt, Feabhas’ focuses on caring and complete student development. Music provided by múinteoir ceoil Rachel Ní Chonnan filled the school’s entrance hall as parents and guardians looked proudly on enjoying refreshments. The proud students cut a cake commemorating their ‘céad lá’ in Coláiste Lú and shared
the cake among all present in celebration. Students were then invited to fill a time capsule with notes to themselves, notes that will not be re-opened until the founding students graduate at the end of their time in Coláiste Lú. A few words from Stiúrthóir Deirdre Uí Liatháin, Peter Kierans CEO of Louth Meath Education and Train-
ing Board and Cllr. Liam Reilly Chairperson of Louth Meath Education and Training Board marked the significance of Coláiste Lú’s first day both for its founding first year students and for education in the North-East. Coláiste Lú is the first school in Louth to provide a complete second level education through the medium of Irish. Students will also avail
of the latest educational technologies in Coláiste Lú as each student will be issued with an iPad. Before bidding farewell to their parents and guardians to further explore the prospect of new subjects, classrooms and comrades the students posed with heads held high for Coláiste Lú’s inaugural student photograph, marking the historic first day.

Register for unique 5k run ALL runners, walkers and joggers are reminded that registration for the ‘Double the Fun 5K Run’ on Saturday September 7 will take place on Thursday September 5 at 8pm and Saturday September 7 from 10.45am. The event, which will take place from St Patricks GFC in Lordship is encouraging participants to run in pairs – starting and finishing together. Any combination is welcome, such as husband/wife, boyfriend/ girlfriend, brother/ sister, parent/child, friends – basically whatever you decide. This provides a great opportunity for experienced runners to help guide a novice through a 5k run, perhaps for the first time, but those who wish to run as in-
dividuals are welcome to do so. The event is being organised by St Patricks GFC and Ravensdale Sports Field committee to raise funds for juvenile sport in the area. The event starts at Noon. Entry is €20 for two participants, or €15 for an individual. If you register as pair, you must stay as a pair. Chairman of St Patrick’s GFC, Alan Duffy, explained that the event is being organised as part of a family fun day for the club. “There is a huge amount of interest in running at the moment but we wanted to do something a little bit different and ensure there was a large fun element to it”, he added.

Exciting news for Dundalk dance school Opening its doors for the first time in 43 years, Dundalk based Scoil Rince Mona Ni Rodaigh is to hold its first ever Open Evening on Friday, August 30th. Along with meeting teachers and learning about classes, locations and schedules, prospective students and their parents will be treated to some of the fastest feet in the East as students perform both traditional and
contemporary routines, giving a flavour of what it is the school has to offer. This season at SR Mona Ni Rodaigh also sees the return of one of its brightest stars and Prodijig sensation Darren Casey who is returning to his old Alma Mater to share some of the skills he learned whilst touring with the best in the business. On a hiatus from life in the limelight, Darren
began working with some of the older dancers late last year for the school’s ‘Christmas Cracker’ show (pictured ). Having enjoyed the experience immensely, he offered his help on an ongoing basis. School Principal Móna says ‘It’s wonderful to have the support of past pupils like Darren who inject an element of youth and a fresh enthusiasm into the dancers. Darren has incredible skills and will be an asset to the school.’ Scoil Rince Mona Ni Rodaigh has taught thousands of dancers,
both in the North east and from afar. Dancers have been known to travel for hours to attend classes at the school that has a worldwide reputation as being one of the best in the business. Pupils of the school have succeeded in winning every major title in both solo and team competitions and have also gone on to star in the biggest dance shows on earth. ‘It’s a great honour to have these dancers return to their roots and give something back, both to their school and to the wider
community’ says Mona. ‘Irish dance has evolved greatly since I started the school back in 1970 and I’m very proud to be a part of this evolution. The art form has been brought to new heights and students of Irish dance have been afforded incredible opportunities, the likes of which weren’t available when I was dancing, that’s for sure!’ Móna teaches alongside her two daughters Ciara and Dearbhla Lennon- both of whom were principals in both Riverdance and Lord of the Dance and who , in recent years, have
become increasingly active in the development of the school. ‘We learned from the best’ says Dearbhla of Mona ‘and we’re embracing the challenge of passing our skills to a new generation of dancers. We each have different attributes that we bring to the table in terms of solo dancing, team dancing and of course the more contemporary type of dancing. I have no doubt Darren will be a great asset in this regard.’ Ciara, who recently moved home to Dundalk, having lived in Co Wicklow for

British Rocker set to play in September Acclaimed British rocker and song writer Graham Parker is set to play The Spirit Store on Friday September 20th. He is the lead singer in the band Graham Parker & the Rumour. His witty lyrics caught the attention of critics, despite most people considering him a moderate commercial success. He can count Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Frank Black among his fans. At age 24, Graham Parker, who was then a petrol-pump attendant from Surrey, drove up to London to meet with musicians who were similar to him. He was confident that his music was better, stronger and far more
Graham Parker original than anything on the radio, and wanted the support of a backing band. His confidence and original lyrics were key factors in his success.
Graham Parker & the Rumour ‘s 1979 album, Squeezing Out Sparks, sold a quarter of a million copies, and is hailed as a masterpiece. The rocker, despite being 62, is still gigging to the delight of rock fans everywhere. This show is not to be missed if you enjoy class-conscious lyrics and energy-fuelled music. His music has spanned decades and many call his lyrics “genius”. Graham is a must-see for rock fans everywhere. Tickets cost €20. To book, visit the Spirit Store website. The new Audi A8 is to face its premiere at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, it is due to go on sale shortly with the first deliveries expected first half of 2014. The key features are revisions to the aluminium body with a raft of technological advances including new MatrixBeam LED headlights and an upgraded lineup of EU6-compliant engines. The footprint of the Audi A8 remains the same at length (5.14 metres), wheelbase (2.99 metres), width (1.95 metres) and height (1.46 metres). The A8 L models gain 13 centimetres of wheelbase and body length in the interest of rear passenger space. You can now specifiy for the A8 the new MatrixBeam Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlights that comprise 25 individual LEDs per unit that can be switched on and off or dimmed individually depending on the situation. This enables the headlight system to react precisely to other vehicles while always brightly illuminating the road. When
the new audi a8
the on-board camera detects other vehicles ahead, the Audi MatrixBeam LED headlights mask the relevant sections of the high-beam by dimming or shutting off individual diodes. Cleverly the lighting system in the A8 uses predictive route data from the navigation system with MMI Touch to adjust the distribution of light in response to the current driving situation, and can recognise and act on route data, such as
corners and road classifications. There are even LED indicators containing 18 LEDs arranged in a strip that is subdivided into seven blocks. Each tail light indicator section contains 24 LEDs in eight blocks. When activated, the blocks are sequentially illuminated at 20 millisecond intervals, from the inside outwards in the desired turning direction. After 150 milliseconds, all segments are bright; for another 250
milliseconds they illuminate with full intensity. After very briefly extinguishing completely, they then repeat the sequence. The engine line up for the new A8 remains the same but the majority of the power plants have been revised to improve performance and efficiency. The supercharged 3.0 TFSI petrol engine is boosted from 290PS to 310PS, the V8 twin-turbo 4.0 TFSI moves from 420PS to 435PS. The 3.0 TDI increases from 250PS to 258PS, on the official combined cycle it returns a figure of 5.9L/100km(47.9mpg) and emitting CO2 155 g/km. The 4.2 TDI gains an extra 35PS, taking it to 385PS with 850 Nm of torque and is capable of 0 – 100kph(62mph) in 4.5 seconds. If it is performance you are looking for the S8 could be the car of choice with its 520PS 4.0 TFSI engine that will take it from 0-100kph in 4.2 seconds, will return a figure of 10.1L/100km (28mpg)
on the combined cycle and outputs to 235 grams CO2 per kilometre. The A8 Hybrid combines a 2.0 TFSI engine and electric motor to produce a system output of 245PS – with a range of 1.9 miles in pure EV mode and a top speed of 100kph under battery power. The A8 hybrid returns a figure of 6.3L/100km (44.8mpg) and emits 147 grams of CO2 per kilometre. All engines satisfy the new Euro 6 standard and are fitted with eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission which transmits power to all four wheels via the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system in all six, eight and twelve-cylinder versions. You can now opt for Audi active lane assist, which makes slight steering adjustments when necessary, is new to the A8, as is the park assist system with 360° display, which handles steering when parking, and the head-up display, which projects important data in the driver's field of vision on the windscreen.

the new BMW i3
The BMW i3 is power by a hybrid synchronous electric motor – with the option of a petrol ‘range extender engine’ which charges the battery on the move. The electric motor generates an output of 170hp with 250Nm torque which is available immediately. It was designed as an electric car from the ground-up, which gave BMW the freedom to do as they wish, rather than make comprises as some manufactures have had to do when adapting conventional fuel cars, i.e. where the batteries impede on the boot space. You can use just one pedal to control the BMW i3 under normal driving conditions, no need to use the brake pedal, although there is one. The moment the driver takes there foot off the accelerator the electric motor switches from drive into generator mode, feeding power into the lithium-ion battery. This recharging mode has the side effect of generating a precisely controllable braking motion, thus the car brakes itself. In city traffic can allow the driver to carry out 75 per cent of braking manoeuvres without applying the brake pedal. As a
safety measure the brake lights illuminate if the regeneration produces the same braking effect as the brakes, which all seems rather clever. The i3 is quite spritely and will do 0-100kph(62mph) in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 150kph(93mph) which is very respectable. BMW are promising a range of between 129-161(80-100miles) between full charges. The i3 is available with what BMW call a ‘range extender engine’, which is capable of powering a generator to maintain the charge of the lithium-ion battery at a constant level while on the move.
The range extender engine comprises a 650cc two-cylinder fourstroke petrol engine developing 34hp and mounted immediately next to the electric motor above the rear axle. The range extender increases the car's maximum range in day-to-day driving to around 290 kilometres(180miles) on one tank of petrol. The i3 can be charged from a standard domestic socket and will take around 10 hours. You can also use DC charging via public charging points which you pay to use and this will charge the car to around 80 per cent in just 30 minutes to one hour, these are becoming more common.

Range Rover Sport Hybrid Land Rover has announced the introduction of the Range Rover Sport Hybrid (and the Range Rover Hybrid). The Range Rover Sport Hybrid order books will open later this year with the first deliveries expected in early 2014. The Range Rover Sport Diesel Hybrid is powered by 3-litre SDV6 diesel engine (as used on other models) combined with a 35kW electric motor which has been integrated into the the 8-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor delivers 170Nm torque which can drive the Hybrid Sport along at speeds of up to 48kph(30mph) for a distance of around a
mile. When coupled to the diesel engine it boost acceleration, the change between EV model and Hybrid is seamless – when the electric motor is not needed it charges the on-board liquid cooled battery pack is mounted beneath the floor of the vehicle in a protective boronsteel cradle.
When coupled with the diesel engine it produces a combined 340PS at 4,000rpm and delivers 700Nm torque between 1,5003,000rpm, which gives roughly the same performance as the SDV8 powered Sport. Acceleration is 0-100kph(62mph) in 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 225kph
(140mph) – combined CO2 emissions are 169 g/km and on the official combined cycle 6.4L/100km (44.1mpg) has been recorded. The Range Rover Sport Hybrid retains its four-wheel drive system including Terrain Response2, with the same wading and ground clearance.
