“I told you that I would win Lotto” By Niamh Kirk

Dundalk’s newest millionaire has wasted no time in getting his hands on the money after collecting the €3.9m cheque from National Lottery headquarters on Friday. Although the winner’s identity remains a secret the man did reveal that he was always confident he would strike the jackpot. “I always said I’d hit the jackpot. My friends and family laughed and told me to save my money but even then I kept playing and I ended up standing in the Lottery with a cheque for millions in my hands.” “I woke up on Thursday morning and as usual, switched on the radio. I was still half asleep when the news came on and they said there’s

a winner in Louth. I pulled out my ticket straight away but missed the numbers. I waited a whole hour until the next news and then the first number matched, the second

number matched... My blood pressure almost went through the ceiling. I couldn’t believe it.” The lucky winner bought the €6 Quick Pick ticket in

Louth impress in Tidy Towns By Niamh Kirk Co Louth has cleanedup at this year’s Tidy Towns awards after a number of towns and villages in the Wee County were commended in each category. Dundalk town itself received a gold medal and was found to be the second tidiest large urban centre in Ireland, followed by Drogheda. Dundalk received 303 points in total. The Dundalk report stated “Tidy Towns is well organised in Dundalk with a sixteen strong committee and healthy links with a wide variety of statutory bodies and groups that have an interest in the growth of the town.” The landscaping of Dundalk town was regarded as excellent noting in particular the mature trees as a particularly appealing feature. Doctor strike to hit Louth By Niamh Kirk

LOUTH’S hospitals will be short 166 people on September 25 when the Junior Doctors go on a one-day national strike. The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) balloted members last week on whether to take industrial action

The fastest and most economical way to get to the heart of Dublin

for improved working hours for non-consultant hospital doctors. An overwhelming 97% of members voted for strike action later this month. The doctors are calling for an end to shifts longer than 24 hours and a 48 hour working week. The IMO has also stated that from Monday September 30 they would call a weekly strike until the HSE deal with the practice of dangerously long working hours by medical professionals. The action is expected to cause delays to outpatients appointments,

elective surgeries and non urgent procedures. Emergency services will be unaffected and the IMO has committed to ensure that neither oncology nor dialysis services will be affected by the action. In a statement from the IMO they say that in order to minimise the impact the same level of cover as provided at weekends will be available. “It is the inaction of the HSE that has the potential to adversely affect patient care and safety. By failing to provide any proposals to resolve the issues the HSE are abdicating

their responsibilities to provide a safe working environment for doctors and a quality service to patients”, said Eric Young of the IMO. There are 160 Junior Doctors currently working in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and six in the Louth County Hospital. The HSE has stated that it plans to seek further information from the IMO as it cannot plan for ‘unspecified action.’ They say that work has been done to progress compliance with the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) in hospitals.

Bystander injured during dispute News A dispute between and man and his partner at the local welfare office resulted in an innocent bystander being injured after being knocked to the ground. As a result of the incident on November 27, 2012, Vincent Akioweiren of 217 Glenwood, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to an as-

sault charge. Mr Akioweiren, a taxi driver who is applying for citizenship, was given the opportunity to avoid a conviction when Judge Patrick Clyne suggested he make a €500 payment to the victim. “This may have been a domestic issue but there was a third party involved and she should be given an indication

of contrition and perhaps spend the money on a night in a hotel”, stated Judge Clyne. “In those circumstances he can leave without a blot on his record. “If it is paid I will dismiss the charge but in default I will impose an €800 fine, so the incentive is there to dispose of the matter the next day”, added the judge

as he adjourned the case to September 18. The court heard that at 9.55am on the day in question, the defendant was in dispute with his partner. He pushed her vigorously and she collided with the injured party who was knocked to the ground. The victim suffered pain to her neck and shoulder and bruising to her knee.

Good Morning Louth project gets the thumbs up The fine work being carried out by the Good Morning Louth project was given the seal of approval by Dundalk Town Council Cathaoirleach, Eamonn O’Boyle, during a recent visit. Cllr O’Boyle was given a full run down on the services provided by project co-ordinator, Anne Murphy, on a recent visit and he was very impressed by what he witnessed. For people living alone, Good Morning Louth brings not only

information on services and entitlements, but an opportunity to socially engage with others. In his public role, Ea-

monn encounters many older people who would benefit from this service, which is growing from strength to strength,

reaching out to all parts of the county. Anne brought Eamonn up to date on the service, telling him that over 150 older people from all over the county enjoy regular telephone calls from the Good Morning Louth Service. If you are an older person or you know of an older person in County Louth who would benefit from a telephone call, please contact Anne at 9330103/0860773747 or anne.murphy@netwellcentre.org.

Motor Tax – Procedures for declaring that a vehicle is not being used in a public place From 1 October 2013, owners wishing to declare that a vehicle is not being used in a public place and so incur no liability for payment of motor tax must do so in advance by completing Form RF150 – Declaration of Non-Use of a Motor Vehicle.

The following arrangements apply for September 2013 only:

Owners who wish to declare that their vehicle will be off the road from September 2013 can do so during the month by completing Form RF150 and submitting it to their local motor tax office. Owners wishing to declare a vehicle off the road from October 2013 must make a declaration during September by submitting Form RF150 to their local motor tax office.

Owners whose vehicles have been off the road can still make a declaration in a Garda Station using Form RF100A – Motor Tax Renewal Form – during September. Chance to view windfarm plans By Niamh Kirk

The coastal waters off Co Louth could become the most densely populated area for wind turbines in Ireland by 2020 with the area leading the way in renewable energy. The sea bed and conditions around Co Louth’s coast are said to be ideal for the development of wind power and two major wind farms are currently in the planning for the county’s coast. As well as the proposed Oriel Windfarm 22km off Dundalk Bay, another signifi-

cantly larger windfarm is proposed adjacent to Co Louth’s sea boundary, just off the Co Down coast. The windfarm could be as close as 4km to the shoreline and potentially 40km wide. Next week the company proposing the windfarm, First Flight Wind, are hosting an information day around the border area. One of the projects main coordinators, Michael Harper, said that this is an important time for the organisers to get feedback and insight from the public

on their plans. He explained that while the project is still in the design stages there was room to take on board public views which will affect certain aspects of the project such as the precise location and size of the turbines used. At the information days the company will also get insight from the public on how to assess the visual impact of the turbines. “We will be introducing the project to those who do not know about it and what it might look like. will also be providing an update of the development and letting people know what the next stages are,” said Mr Harper. He continued to point out that the windfarms would not have a major impact on how recreational or fishing boats are used in the area, the shipping paths around the Carlingford Lough that is used every day may be changed. However Mr Harper said that First Flight Wind are communicating with SeaTruck with respect to this. The windfarm is

Holiday-makers stumble over piece of local history Two Dundalk holidaymakers on a recent trip to England were in for a pleasant surprise when the came across an interesting piece of local history in the world famous York Minster. Tony Henry and Anne McArdle were visiting the cathedral, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, when they stumbled across the tomb of Edward Tipping of Bellurgan Park. “We were visiting my sister Mary and her husband Harry when we took a tour of the cathedral. We were just wandering around when I spotted the headstone so we stopped

and got a photograph”, explained Tony who is from Dromiskin. The inscription reveals that Edward was the second son of Edward Tip-

ping of Bellurgan Park who died on August 17, 1790. “I just thought it was a very interesting piece of local history. From our

own point of view we had personal association with Bellurgan Park as our uncle, John White, was a forrester there”, added Tony.

Over to you QUESTION: Do you agree with electronic tagging for repeat offenders?

Gerard Bradley

Murt O’Shea

Tony Kelly

Jessie McDonagh

Paul Forrester

Let me put it this way; the person whose house is getting burgled would definitely think it’s a good idea. I think that says it all.

I would be in agreement to electronic tagging in principle. However, it would have to be subject to appropriate limits and not just brought in across the board.

It is absolutely a good idea. These repeat offenders are just coming in and out of court constantly with very little punishments given out to them. We need something like this introduced to give them a reason to stop offending.

I think it’s a very bad idea. Just because they made a couple of mistakes doesn’t mean to say they should be tarred for life.

My initial reaction is that electronic tagging is taking things too far. Unless the crimes are of a violent or extreme nature I wouldn’t be in agreement with it.

ward to the European Championships and can’t wait to get into competition after the busy training schedule over the last few weeks. “I’ve been using the Bo staff since I was ten and I love going down to Mas-f to train. I’ve entered plenty of competitions around Ireland over the last few years but the European Championships will definitely be the biggest event I’ve taken part in. I’m excited but a little bit nervous as well”, admitted Enda.

TENSION and nerves, mixed with jovial banter and an undercurrent of determination were just some of the feelings that were buzzing around the Commercial club on Saturday as the Darts Thrower’s of Louth and Area 7 (Newry and District) took part in the Annual Cross border challenge. This event was introduced four years ago and has proved a great success. The CLDO has been busy all throughout the summer running county trials in order to select this year’s team, once the trials were complete and the panel selected a number of warm up challenge matches were organised against a select team from the Drogheda Summer league and against a team from Watters in Duleek with a few additional players. Louth were successful

in both these and were in good form going into the event. The local team included Robert Wallace, Sean Kavanagh, Mickey Kelly, Colm Boyle, Owen Caffrey, Sean McMurray, Brian Fitzpatrick, Joey Englishby and Ray Harte who claimed a tense 7-5 victory. The committee of CLDO would like to thank AREA 7 for there continued support of this event and the staff and management of the Commercial Club Dundalk who provided a great venue and food. Back on the shelves A Dundalk author is celebrating the launch of her second book which is set to be a big hit for young readers throughout the country. The Adventure of Terry the Terrible Tractor Unit Causing Chaos by Emer Conlon has recently hit the shelves and is set to follow the success of the first of the Vroom Town series. “The Vroom-Town series of books is ideal for little boys who love trucks, diggers and tractors and little girls who love colourful books with a great story and characters they can fall in love with”, explained Emer. “I can’t wait for

Emer Conlon

children to re-acquaint themselves with a few old favourites including Screech, Noz, Tim and Bill Byrne and to discover some new exciting characters including Terry the Terrible Tractor Unit”. The new book is about good winning

over evil and illustrates that there are consequences for actions. “As the title suggests the main character – Terrible Terry is a baddie – and of course best friends with BullyDozer from the first book – Vroom-Town:

The Adventure of Tim the Tipper in Quentin’s Quarry”, she added. The Vroom-Town books are available from Vroom-Town. ie and is also available from local bookshops. They are linked with an interactive website, www.Vroom-Town.ie where children can play dynamic games, enjoy word puzzles, jig-saws and colouring. It is important to note that both books have been printed locally in the North-East and everything pertaining to the books and website are provided by local Irish suppliers. Louth targeted by burglars Smiles on their faces and By Niamh Kirk

Recent figures show that the number of burglaries in Co Louth has gone up by as much as 40% in the past nine years. It has also been fund that as many as 20% of homes in the area have been targeted by burglars in the past six years alone. In a survey taken by AA Ireland the distribution of incidents across Ireland indicated that burglers were targeting commuter towns around Dublin. “The problem in the

commuter counties around Dublin is that every morning a wouldbe burglar knows that there will be a mass exodus towards the capital, leaving behind whole estates full of empty houses, meaning easy pickings” remarked Conor Faughnan Director of Consumer Affairs at The AA. The poll showed that in the past year 2% of homes surveyed had been burgled in the past 12 months, and nearly 4% in the past two years. Almost 32% of homes in Co Louth have been burgled at some stage

with only 68% of peoples living in the county stating that they have never been burgled. Burglaries don’t just mean the loss of some of your belongings but they also mean an infringement on your personal life and your security” says Faughnan. “Knowing that your most important contents can be replaced may bring some much needed relief. It is vital though, to make sure that you have listed all contents to be insured with your insurer first,” said Conor. In Co Louth more than 8% of burglars ac-

cessed homes through an open window, and almost 5% through an open door. “It’s a good idea to get yourself into a routine before you leave the house or when you’re going to bed” says Faughnan. “Make sure you check every door is locked and every window shut.” However the poll shows that locked doors and windows is not necessarily a deterrent as 32% of burglars access homes through a locked door, and more than 40% break in trough a locked window.

Man who bought laptop was reckless A man who admitted being reckless when he bought a laptop computer for his daughter “at a price he couldn’t refuse” was given a four month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court. Richard McDonagh of 4 St Vincents Ave, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a charge of handling stolen property and had his sentence suspended for two years.

The court heard that on September 7, 2012, Gardai had been made aware of a burglary in Keady, Co Armagh. They subsequently stopped a car at Bridge St in which the defendant was a passenger and he had a laptop which was identified as belonging to the victim of the burglary. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 41-year-old, who had 74 previous convictions,

suffers from depression which has been compounded by the premature loss of two family members in recent times. He added that his client was not involved in the burglary but he encountered a man who had a laptop for sale. “He needed a laptop for his daughter and when offered the computer he was reckless in taking it and should have known better”, he stated.

Gaeilge on the tongue The increasing popularity of the Irish language was underlined once again at local level with a special Gael Champa proving to be a huge success. Now in its second year, the summer camp took place in Smarmore Castle from August 12 to 16 where 24 children aged between five and 13 enjoyed a series of activities while also improving their Irish skills. Activities were led through the week by Clodagh McClean and Kenny Rabbitt and assisted by Éadaoin McClean, Aelish Lambert, Andrea Meade and Claire McGrory. The idea behind this summer camp was to encourage children to welcome and enjoy the Irish language as a fun and funtional means of communication. As the week progressed, the children were speaking more and more Irish and their confidence grew as they experienced Irish as a practical language. The week consisted of many activities for

the children. From table quizzes to treasure hunts and relay races to ‘Capture the Flag’, fun through Irish was always the prime concern. Throughout the course of the week, the children were divided into four teams, Eireann, Na Buaiteoirí, Club Chorcra and Daoine Gan Stóp, and could earn points for their teams by succeeding in the activities, team spirit, good sportsmanship and through their use of the Irish lan-

guage. Despite the close competition throughout the week, it was Club Chorcra that finished in first place of the leaderboard at the end of the week. At the conclusion of the camp each child went home with prizes for their excellent use of Gaeilge throughout the week. Camp organiser, Clodagh McClean, would like to thank everyone who helped make this years camp a success.

lucky customer to be a contestant on RTE’s Winning Streak with a three star scratch card. Jerome said that he and the staff were delighted for the winner, but that they didn’t know who exactly it was. He said that they were wishing the winner all the best. He explained that there is a great buzz around the shop since the win with well wishers calling in and speculation rife as to who the winner is. “You’d think we had won the Lotto,” he said. More than €61.1 million has been won by Lotto players in Co. Louth since the Lotto began in Ireland. In recent times there have been some significant wins. In April, thirtyeight year old Simon

Fagan from Darver Co. Louth and his mother Patricia scooped a €3.5 million jackpot. This most recent mystery winner is the third biggest Lotto winner from Co. Louth in the history of the game Greg Smyth who won more than €9.4 million in 2008 is the county’s biggest winner. Lily Gallagher is in second place with her €5.1 million win in 2011.

This most recent win means that the last three Lotto jackpots that have been won in Co Louth have been won on ‘quick-picks’. In November 2012 a €3.59 million was won on a €4 quick pick sold in Carroll’s News Agents, Longwalk SC, Dundalk. Four months earlier July 2012 another €2 million was won on a €4 quickpick on the Mace Stores on the Carrick Road.

Louth impress in Tidy Towns Continued from Page 1 lost opportunities for landscaping such as on the Ecco Road. Tallanstown however has been named as Louth’s cleanest village in this year’s awards. The village was once again awarded a gold medal with an outstanding 312 points, its second after topping the category in 2011 with 317 points. Tallanstown has had an active Tidy Town committee for almost 28 years and is regularly credited for the well preserved green spaces and well kept buildings in the town centre. Blackrock who received 307 points was also awarded a gold medal in the small town category and was commended in a breakdown of towns per county. Knockbridge won a silver medal in the awards and was highly commended in the county breakdown, and Ardee received a bronze medal. As well as surveying and awarding a towns general cleanliness and tidiness, the Tidy Towns awards also take note of social efforts being made in local communities. Louth Village was credited with the Endeavour award which

recognises the work done in the past 12 months to improve an area. The village has seen a 10.18% improvement in the town’s tidiness. The Best Bring Banks in the Midlands and East region are still in Co Louth, but this year Dromiskin has nabbed the title from last year’s winners Tallanstown. They receive a €1,000 prize. Blackrock was also singled out for exceptional efforts and was awarded the Climate Change award pocketing €1000 to further their hard work. Reaghstown was Louth County’s highest scorer in the prestigious Category A which awards Ireland’s villages which this year went to Moynalty in Co Meath. Greenore came in a close second followed by Stabannon and then Annagassan. Tallanstown topped the Category B list and receiving so many points it came fourth in the category nationally, it was followed by Knockbridge and then Castlebellingham. Carlingford topped Category C which is dedicated to smaller towns, with Collon and Dunleer behind respectively. Blackrock and Ardee were both credited in the larger towns grouping, Category D.

Campbell 1st Anniversary SON In loving memory of John, whose 1st Anniversary occurs 17th September. A million times we've needed you A million times we've cried If love alone could've saved you You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly In death we love you still In our hearts you hold a place No one else could ever fill. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn't go alone Part of us went with you John The day God took you home. —Mam and Dad.
