Garda hero’s wife grateful for support

THE wife of the late Det Garda Adrian Donohoe has expressed her thanks for the huge level of support she has received over the last few months. Caroline Donohoe took the opportunity to acknowledge the support she has received since her husband’s murder in January, while accepting a Rehab People of the Year Award on his behalf. “The people of Lordship and Dundalk, along with my Garda colleagues, have been phenomenal. There is nothing they wouldn’t do for us”, she stated in an emotional tribute to Adrian on RTE on Saturday night. “On the day of the funeral

I was walking behind my best friend, surrounded by friends and that is what has kept me going. “I have got thousands and thousands of cards and letters. I got cards on days that I really needed them the most and they were really beautiful”, revealed Caroline who was given a standing ovation when she went up to accept the award. The support came from all over the world and Ireland and it really was tremendous. There is no way I can individually thank all the people, but I was so humbled by the fact that they thought so much of Adrian”, explained Caroline. See Page 13

Approval granted for a new dry waste disposal facility in Dundalk By Niamh Kirk

THE development of a dry waste disposal facility on the Coe’s Road, Dundalk has been approved by an Bord Pleanala. Permission to develop the industrial recycling centre went to the national authority after residents appealed Dundalk Town Council’s decision to give the go ahead in May. Last week plans to redevelop the site by Ecological Waste Management was granted by the planning authority, however there are a number of conditions and no work can begin until further details are agreed with the local planning authority. The plans aimed to redevelop the site with a

number of storage areas and cleaning facilities for industrial equipment that is part of the process of recycling industrial dry waste. After considering the history and pattern of development in the area, permission to turn the site into a dry waste recycling plant was granted. The plant which will be run by Ecological Waste Management will see the site on the Coe’s Rd repurposed, but the list of conditions is lengthy. The tyre storage in one of the site’s main buildings has been denied due to the proximity of the building to the residential area on the Coe’s Rd. This was one of the major concerns for residents in the area and a

featured on almost all of the objections submitted to the planning authority. No food waste or any refuse can be recycled on the site only dry waste and the exact details of which must be agreed with the local authority in advance of work on the site commencing. With regard for the residential area and public health, nothing can be stored in outdoor skips overnight. Also no work is permitted on the site before 8am, after 6pm on weekdays and, between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays. And no operations are permitted at all on Sundays or Bank Holidays. The precise details of

all the materials that will the operators do respect mitigate the impact the be recycled, as well as the local residents and facility has on them”, the colours and textures local businesses and she stated. of all the external finishes to the proposed buildings shall be agreed with the planning authority prior to commencement of the development. The lighting on the site too has not yet been approved as must be agreed upon with local planners. There are still concerns about the impact of the facility on the residents in the Mountain Court estate. Cllr Marianne Butler was among the first to respond. “I did have concerns about it and I still do. It is greatly improved on the original application but there is a ‘wait and see’ element to this. “We can only hope

A MAN who admitted making a stupid mistake was disqualified for four years after pleading guilty to a drinkdriving charge at Dundalk District Court. Shane Morgan of Irish Grange, Carlingford, was also fined €400 after being stopped by Gardai at a checkpoint in Greenore on March 13 this year. The court heard that on that date, Gardai observed a vehicle on the

wrong side of the road and it took the defendant 10 to 15m to come to a halt. He was taken to the Garda station where he provided a breath sample but declined a second. Barrister David Costello stated that the 31-year-old made a stupid mistake and was very apologetic. The toolmaker, who promised that this would not happen again, will be able to keep his job as his employers are supportive of him.

A MAN who was stopped by Gardai while driving while disqualified told Dundalk District Court that he was only trying to make a living. Richard Woods of Cortial, Kilkerley, who represented himself after declining the offer of legal aid told Judge Flann Brennan that he felt he was left with little option. “I can’t get the dole, what do you expect me to do? I can’t get work anywhere else”,

explained the defendant. However, Judge Brennan warned that he faced time in prison if he continued to drive. “Disqualified means that you can’t drive. If you persist the only way to stop you is to send you to prison. That is the only way I can protect the public. You have complete disregard for the road traffic code and you just don’t care as far as I can see”, he stated.

The court heard that the defendant was stopped by Gardai driving an articulated lorry on the M1 at Gibstown on August 7. He had no tacograph record and gave an address that didn’t satisfy Gardai, and was subsequently arrested. He had been disqualified from driving for two years on June 27, 2012, after being convicted of drink driving. In relation to driving without insurance, Judge Brennan

For failing to give correct name and address, Mr Woods was given a three month sentence, suspended for three months and disqualified for 12 months. For having no licence, the defendant was given a three month sentence, suspended for six months. Other mattes were taken into account.

Mini rugby returns to the Dundalk RFC DUNDALK Rugby minis returned to training on Saturday September 7 at 10.30am. Despite a damp start to the new season nearly 200 players aged from U7 to U12 turned up at the Mill Road grounds. For many it was a case of meeting friends and team mates that they hadn’t seen since before the summer holidays, while for others it was a chance to join in and try a new sport in a fun

enviroment for the first time. The club is delighted with the numbers of new members joining at all levels, which reflects the huge growth of rugby at underage levels nationally. Many new members are joining having been inspired by the recent visit of Leinster Rugby to the club, and in particular the close association enjoyed by the club with local stars Robert and David Kearney.

Both players began their rugby careers as minis at Dundalk RFC and benefited in their early years from the coaching, values and teamwork they experienced with the club. Training is at 10.30am Saturday mornings at Dundalk RFC grounds at the Mill Road. New members are always welcome. For more information please see the club website and Facebook page.

Blackrock celebrates Tidy Towns Gold medal BLACKROCK has joined the elite of gold medal winners in the national Tidy Towns competition. The award was announced at a ceremony in The Helix in Dublin on Monday September 9, and a delegation from Blackrock Tidy Towns was there to hear the announcement. The medal itself will be presented at a regional awards ceremony in Moynalty later in the year. Blackrock got its first bronze medal in the competition only last year,

and it is very unusual to jump straight from bronze to gold especially in such a short space of time. The village is now in the top 4 per cent of towns and villages in Ireland, and joins Tallanstown and Knockbridge at the top of the table for County Louth. As well as the gold medal, Blackrock took the national award for its work on Climate Change. This award recognises the series of initiatives undertaken by the Tidy Towns

in the village over the last few years in promoting and implementing “green” initiatives, many in conjunction with the local schools. Blackrock Tidy Towns chairman John Horan congratulated everyone in the village who contributed in any way towards this outstanding result. “Blackrock is now firmly on the map among the elite of gold medal winners in this prestigious competition, and every single person in the village

can feel justifiably proud”, he said. “We are very fortunate indeed to have such co-operation from the residents, businesses and organisations in the Blackrock area because this could not have been achieved through the efforts of Tidy Towns alone. Everyone in Blackrock is invited to attend an evening of celebration in The Clermont on October 21 when the “Beautiful Blackrock” awards will be presented.

A MAN who was taking steps to deal with his addiction problems by taking a taxi to a clinic in Newry, ended up in court after failing to pay the full fare. James Dunne, with an address at Simon Community, Barrack St, Dundalk, who also pleaded guilty to a theft, had the case against him adjourned until November 6 for a Probation Report. The court heard that on July 4 this year, the defendant took a taxi to Newry in an attempt to gain admission to a clinic. When he was denied entry to the facility he returned home by taxi but only had €26.40 of the total fare of €73.40. As a result, the taxi driver informed Gardai. He also pleaded guilty to stealing wine valued at €37.16 and cigarettes valued at €10 from a shop on Market St on February 2. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client, who is afflicted by alcohol, is hoping to get treatment for his addiction. It was a desire to get treatment that led him to take a taxi to Newry even though he didn’t have a referral. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to November 6 for a Probation Report.

Competition for the title was intense and went right to the wire before St. Mochtas clubman Declan Byrne took the title and the €5000 prize. The earlier rounds allowed paired competitors to choose their shooting spots and some unusual angles were chosen at this stage.

Round two involved groups of four and the elimination process continued until four competitors remained. The standard of free kicks was incredible and the accuracy rate very high. In the end Declan proceeded to give an exhibition of place kicking from all areas on the pitch to take the honours. In second place was Daniel O’Connell of Roche, with Derek Maguire of Young Irelands in third. The St Mochtas captain was modest in success claiming that he

‘just had one of those days where nearly everything he hit went over’ “It was a great competition and a very enjoyable day. Obviously it was great to win the title and luckily for me I just had one of those days where everything I hit seemed to go over. I’d like to thank my club St Mochtas for entering me and also to the organisers who put on a really great competition. All well, I’ll be back next year to defend my title”, he added. Cic Saor organiser Adrian O`Donoghue

presented the winner with his cheque for €5,000 and the Corona Golden Boot Award. He thanked all the clubs and players who participated in the 2013 Cic Saor, along with all who helped make the day a success. “We were absolutely delighted with how it all went and it was great to see the local clubs in the county support the event. “We raised a nice sum of money for the Young Ireland’s club and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves so

you can’t ask for anything more really”, explained Adrian. He also paid tribute to the Corona Sponsors and their Event team for the full support they offered the event over the past few months. In conclusion he thanked Jack O`Shea and Oisin McConville, both of whom had promoted the Corona Cic Saor during the year. Event coverage of the 2013 Cic Saor can be viewed on www.cicsaor.ie from Wednesday September 18. onwards.

Sold drugs to supplement his own addiction problems

News

in Brief

G&T Golf Society members pictured at their recent outingto the Slieve Russell Hotel. L - R Nuala Henry (Vice Captain), winning team - Angela McCabe, Theresa O’ Mahony and Mary Murray with Lady Captain Geraldine Gorham.

A man who was selling drugs to supplement his own addiction told Dundalk District Court that he has overcome his problem. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, told the court that Thomas Turley of 5 Culhane St, Dundalk, has attempted to turn his life around and is

no longer involved in such activity, while he has applied to go to college. He added that the defendant hasn’t come to the notice of Gardai since in the incident on October 18, 2012. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on that date, Mr Turley was observed on Culhane St where

that he had the drug for sale. Mr McDonnell stated that the 26-year-old, who is originally from Dublin, but living with his girlfriend and son in Dundalk, admitted dealing in small quantities to supplement his own addiction but is no longer involved in such

activities. The defendant pleaded guilty to two charges of unlawful possession and one of possession of drugs for sale or supply. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case until November 6 for a Probation Report.

Pozdrawiam - Agnieszka Boniewicz

Thank you all for Adrian support

From page 1 “I would particularly like to thank St Patricks GFC for what they did at the time of Adrian’s funeral. For the way they welcomed thousands of people and the organisation that went into it and the effort of club members, people from the community and surrounding clubs. “I also want to thank the people of Dundalk for the respect they showed on the day of the funeral”, continued Caroline, who described Adrian as the love of her life that that she will miss him ‘every minute of every day as long as I live’. In a moving tribute to Adrian, the programme also heard tributes from family members, friends and Garda colleagues, while

in presenting the award Micheal O Muircheartaigh summed up the mood by stating: “The loss of this brave officer reminds us that there are people out there who look after us without being asked and tonight let’s be proud that we still live in communities that produce men like Det Garda Adrian Donohoe.” The programme also heard from Adrian’s friend and St Patricks colleague, Seamus Savage, who revealed that the club had named their football pitch in his honour. “Adrian Donohoe Pairc is where he trained a lot of young people in the area. ing the kids and trying to get the best out of them. There were never any angry words – always encouragement”, he added. Garda colleague and friend, Darren Kirwan, described Adrian as a great role model who loved his job and was always keen to help

out. “He was a brilliant Garda who loved his job. I think it was his calling. He was a great role model for young Gardai who were trying to learn the ropes and if there were things to be done, Adrian would get them done”, explained Darren.

Friday 13th is lucky for Kelly

From page 1 engine for their boat, they had raised the funds for the new engine, but the boat was also taken in the robbery. “I just thought it was so much money to win and we were robbed. I thought if I won it we could get the equipment back,” said Kelly. She wrote into the show explaining how the Blackrock Sea Scout group had their equipment stolen. “I Love the club, I get to do lots of fun stuff and if we won the money it would help us run our scout club,” wrote Kelly on Thursday evening. And it worked. On Friday morning Kelly received a call from 2FM saying she had won the funding and went on to talk to Hector live on air. “It was the most deserving call on the day,” said a Supervalu

spokesperson. “We looked at all the entree but when we looked at this club, keeping young people active and engaged in watersports and safety, we felt it was a very deserving cause. Hector loved the story.” Kelly said that she was overwhelmed. “I was so happy that they called, I was very nervous. But I am very happy that we won, “she said. Kelly who is in 6th Class in St Fursey’s went straight into school and told her friends Ruth and Grace who are also Sea Scout members. The Sea Scout leader Frank Conlon said that the club’s members were delighted with the news that they had won. “It is fantastic, it is great news. The kids were very excited and for Kelly. “It means we can forget about

the past, put it behind us and look forward to replacing the stuff and also stuff that were could have only dreamed of getting,” he said. The club can now afford new equipment for sailing and can now buy the VHF radios which they need for rescues. The club plan to replace the tents that were stolen so that they can go on a camping trip before winter arrives in earnest. Breakfast with Hector had teamed up with supermarket Supervalu to find new ways to support local communities. Each day last week the radio DJ picked two deserving cases to run for funding from Supervalu. Kelly who is 11 years old heard the competition on her way to school one morning and decided to take action.

Guinness will flow THE Guinness will be flowing in the bars around Dundalk next Thursday and Friday as the town’s barmen prepare themselves for this year’s Arthur’s Day celebrations. Patrons around Dundalk will be painting the town black as McManus’s and The Castle Bar in Seatown, Jimmy’s in Park St, The Century Bar in Roden Place, Kennedy’s, Carrick Road and Byrne’s of Hill St take part in the celebrations. The annual Arthur’s Day celebrations first took place in 2009 as brewing giants Diageo created a series of music events around the country to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the creation of Guinness. Guinness drinkers around the world will

raise a toast to mark the anniversary of Arthur Guinness signing the lease on his brewery in Dublin’s St James’s Gate in 1759 with celebrations taking place in New York, Kuala Lumpar and Lagos as well of course as all over Ireland. The young Arthur started out in the brewer trade working for a family in County Kildare in the 1740s. They gave out ale to their workers at the time, believing it to be far better for the body and constitution than water. With a small inheritance and aged 27 Arthurs expanded an existing brewery and worked with his younger brother Richard for four years. It was in 1759 that the ambitious young brewer

came to Dublin to start his own business. Guinness, which he started making in the 1770s, was well-established by 1794 and in 1797 such was its popularity that he stopped making ale at the brewery and concentrated solely on producing ‘Guinness’s Extra Superior Porter.’ ‘Stout’ became an offshoot of porter and in 1840 it became ‘Guinness Extra Stout.’ Its creamy white head was the result of nitrogen being mixed with the beer as it was poured. Arthur Guinness is celebrated as being one of the first businessmen in Dublin back in 1876 to give his employees proper healthcare and pensions. He died in 1803 and his son Arthur

II took over and expanded as far afield as the Channel Islands. By 1840 Guinness was selling in Barbados and New York. So this Arthur’s Day why not join in with the festivities and raise a glass to the man who began what has since become a worldwide phenomenon with 1.8 billion pints being sold annually in over fifty countries. Dundalk will of course also be joining in with the Arthur’s Day celebrations and there is plenty going on in some of the finest bars on Thursday and Friday to help celebrate what has become Ireland’s unofficial national drink. Ardee Concert Band at Gathering of the Gales The Ardee Concert Band took part in the Gathering of the Gales Festival on Saturday September 7 in The Alley Theatre, Strabane, Co. Derry. The Festival which gathered Brass and Wind Bands from all over the Island, took place over the two days of September 6 and 7. The opening Ceremony of the festival took

place on Friday evening commencing with a Historical march departing from Lifford Courthouse, Co. Donegal to The Alley Theatre in Strabane Town Centre. The Evening was finished off with a performance from Mickey Harte singing his new single, “Come Gather All”. On Saturday, the main events took place in

The Alley Theatre, as all outdoor events where moved indoors due to the inclement weather. Many bands from both sides of the border took part in the event which was held throughout the day with each band taking a 30 minute time slot to play and delight the masses that came to enjoy the day. The band and their

supporters arrived in good time to hear the other participants of the day and join in on the excitement and with such a great and enthusiastic atmosphere from the Audience, it made the day even more enjoyable. Ardee under their conductor, Brendan Breslin, took to the stage at 6.45pm to finish off

the day’s proceedings for the cross community event, starting their programme with a Non-Typical Style March, St. Louis Blues March, followed by the Legends of Soul, a Trumpet Solo Piece entitled Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Puttin’ on the Ritz and the Theme from Austin Powers; Soul Bossa Nova to name but a few. This is the first event of its kind in Ireland and is totally unique in its nature to the Isle. Ardee is very hopeful in a second festival next year and hopefully the sun will make an appearance and all the music can be brought outside for many more people to enjoy the music of the festival.

Of our Son

Kevin (Victor) Murray

whose birthday occurs 20th September. Have you ever lost a son Or even felt the pain Or shed the bitter tears That drop like falling rain, If you haven’t had that feeling I hope you never do For when we lost our son It broke our hearts too.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART: Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never know to fail). B Mc A

Participants on the summer camp taking part in a walk on the Cooley Mountains

Summer camps rock in Cooley Peninsula Children from Louth were joined by their neighbours from Down and Armagh as they enjoyed the new Rock Camps Summer Schemes over the past four weeks. The Rock Camps were hosted by Mourne-Cooley-Gullion Geotourism with a view to enhancing knowledge and appreciation of the local geology and archaeology and encouraging children to explore and enjoy. The project was designed to pro-

mote and enhance the profile of the three areas within one tourism destination, with a particular focus on the significant geology and archaeology of the Mourne Mounatins, Ring of Gullion and the Cooley Peninsula. Cooley Kickhams GAA club and Slieve Gullion Courtyard were among the venues to host the camps for children aged from seven to 13. The children who participated had the opportunity to explore,

enjoy and learn about the landscape and environment around them through a series of fun and interactive Geology and Archaeology activities. They also enjoyed fieldtrips to Legananny Dolmen, Bloody Bridge, Slieve Gullion and Templetown Beach. The Rock Camps were such a popular idea, that the project needed to increase the number of schemes. There are already plans to host the scheme again in 2014.

New Nissan X-Trail goes on sale in 2014 The all new Nissan X-Trail will go on sale next year with the first cars being delivered in the second half of 2014. The new X-Trail will feature the latest technology encompassing reducing in fuel consumption, co2 emission, safety assist and connectivity. Including the introduction of LED headlights - for both high and low beams (model dependent) and 19” alloy wheels. There will even be the option of seven seats, remote controlled power tailgate and will feature a split level cargo space. The new model will employ Nissan’s electronic four-wheel drive system, ALL MODE 4x4i, that is controlled by a rotary switch on the centre console, offering the choice between two-wheel drive, Auto mode or Lock offering permanent four-wheel drive. In Auto mode, it

can detect wheelspin, shifting power from the front wheels to the rear to maintain traction as needed, or if the conditions dictate you can lock it in to permanent fourwheel drive. There is Uphill Start Support and Advance Hill Descent Control to aid control. It will also feature Active Ride Control that monitors the road surface to detect undulations which might affect the pitch of the car, altering the

suspension damping to compensate. It will also see Active Engine Braking and Active Trace Control, which monitors the speed, steering angle, throttle opening and braking effort, by controlling the brakes individually to reduce understeer and aid on path steering. Other technology includes the latest generation NissanConnect in-car navigation, comprising Bluetooth phone and audio

connectivity, appware, entertainment and navigation via a 7 inch colour screen. It utilises Google to report weather forecasts, the location of fuel stations, hotels, restaurants and many other points of interest. The all new Nissan X-Trail will go on sale next year with first deliveries expected in late Summer, and we will have engine and model line-up shortly.

IRISH drivers still cannot seem to put down their phones, according to the AA Motor Insurance. Almost 80% of motorists witness someone using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving at least once a day. That’s according to an AA Motor Insurance survey of over 16,000 people. Despite this figure, less than 17% of motorists admitted to using their phone while driving. In fact 39% say they never do. “Irish drivers really do seem to be phone-addicts”, said Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “Sadly it is not just phone calls. These days people use smartphones send texts, to check email and even surf the web while in traffic. Although we

all know that it is absolutely reckless it is far too common for drivers to fiddle with their devices not just while stuck in traffic but while driving at speed.” With this in mind The AA is reminding motorists of the dangers of using your phone while driving. “You’re four times more likely to crash your car if you’re on the phone” says Conor Faughnan Director of Consumer Affairs at The AA. “There is enough research on this now to put the issue beyond doubt. It’s impossible to stay completely focussed on the road if you’re calling or texting someone. It’s plain stupid to put your own and other road-users lives at

risk in this way.” The AA survey, which was conducted in July, also found that men and women are equally as dim-witted, when it comes to using the phone while driving. 16.7% of men and 16.5% of women said that it is common for them to do this. The fact is, if you drive and use a mobile phone, it’s harder for you to drive at the correct speed, keep in lane, keep an appropriate distance from the vehicle in front or judge safe gaps in traffic. Despite being dangerous, driving with a mobile phone in your hand or supported by a part of your body is illegal. If you’re caught by the Gardaí you will be given 2 penalty points.

Fiat 500L MPW has lots to offer THE FIAT 500L MPW is available with either five seats or as 5+2 model, albeit the two rear most seats are only suitable for people under 1.65m high. It has a footprint of 4,352mm(l) x 1,784mm(w) x 1,667mm(h) which, I think, makes it Europe’s smallest 7 seater.

There are two trim levels, ‘Pop Star’ and ‘Lounge’. The Pop Star is equipped with air conditioning, cruise control, 16inch alloy wheels, a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Uconnect, six airbags, a full suite of stability and traction control safety systems as well as rear parking

sensors. Where the 500L MPW Lounge, adds rear electric windows, front fog lights, dual-zone automatic climate control, automatic headlamps, rain sensors, front seats with seat back tables and storage nets, an electro-chromatic rear view mirror, rear privacy glass,

floor mats and an electric glass sunroof. There is a choice of four power plants, two petrol 95hp

1.4-litre petrol (5seat only) and the 105hp 0.9 TwinAir petrol. Plus two diesel units the 85hp 1.3 MultiJet (also

available with the Dualogic automatic transmission) and the 105hp 1.6-litre MultiJet. There are nine
