The tragic death of Adrian Donohoe has left a huge void in the community where he was an active and highly respected member. The 41-year-old father of two was shot and killed during a robbery at Lordship Credit Union on Friday night leaving the whole nation in shock. However, it is among his family, friends, Garda colleagues and the local community where Adrian lived, worked and socialised, that have been most affected and left numb by the senseless killing. Parish Priest of Lordship and Ballymascanlon, Fr Padraig Murphy, summed up the feeling at Mass on Sunday morning when he stated that a “dark cloud had descended on the commu-

Man challenges drink drive charge over time delay stated that it would have been quicker to bring the defendant to Drogheda Garda Station to carry out an intoxyliser test, rather than waiting for a doctor to take a urine sample. Inspector Martin Beggy explained that the intoxyliser only failed when the investigating Garda began processing the test on Mr Cox. He stated that in the past there had been difficulties in prosecuting cases where a defendant had been transferred to another station. The Inspector added that there was no obligation to go to another station and that as the doctor was available, no significant time was lost in

A man who claimed that he was detained for an unnecessary length of time after being arrested on suspicion of drink driving failed in a bid to have the case against him dismissed. Trainee fabricator, Enda Cox, with an address at Curry, Athlone Road, Longford, appeared at Dundalk District Court following an incident on August 19, 2011. The 23-year-old defendant based his argument on the fact that following the failure of the intoxyliser at Dundalk Garda Station, there was an undue delay in providing an alternative test. Solicitor, James MacGuill,

not going to Drogheda. Judge William Hamill agreed and stated that while there were options available to the Garda, he went with the one that had most certainty. As a result, he ruled that there was no evidence that the defendant wasn’t processed as expediently as possible. However, he dismissed a charge of dangerous driving. The court heard that the defendant was observed driving at high speed in Crowe St at 1.35am after slowing down on Francis St he turned into Rampart Lane where he was involved in a slight collision while trying to park.

The defence solicitor pointed out that the loss of a licence would be an impediment to employment and asked that the ban be deferred to July 1 to allow him complete his training. He stated that his client believed that he was insured at that time and that a policy had been transferred onto the car he was driving on the date in question. Judge Hamill imposed a three-year disqualification on the drink driving charge and imposed a €250 fine. In relation to the no insurance charge the defendant was banned for one year and fined €500.

Dancing for charity Local dance and stage school Elite raised €375 for children’s charity Barretstown. The children performed their show “A christmas treat with Elite” in December and were only too happy to give all the profits from the show to this amazing charity. The group are now back at rehearsals for their annual show taking place in June 2013 and have a busy year planned ahead. The organisers expressed theit thanks to anyone who came out to support the event.

Windfarm aims to export energy to UK

Dundalk Leader 30th January 2013

ORIEL Windfarm, which is proposed to be located off the coast at Blackrock, Dundalk have said that they will be the first off the grid to export green energy to the UK. Not only will they be able to harness the unrivalled natural resources to generate a new market but they could help power the country’s economic recovery too. Last week the Irish and British governments signed an agreement that will allow Irish companies export renewable

energy to the UK. The developers Oriel Windfarm welcomed the agreement and Brian Britton Managing Director of Oriel Windfarm stated that it was the first step to creating an energy market that spans both the UK and Ireland. “Companies, such as Oriel Windfarm Limited, will have a market for their offshore wind resource as the UK addresses its climate change and energy security objective,” he said. The Oriel Windfarm

is the most advanced offshore wind farm in planning along the Irish coastline. The project could create up to 330 MW of energy with the 55 turbines, this would be enough to power about 25,000 homes. Industry insiders estimate that the project can be operational by 2016, placing it at the head of the Irish companies seeking to export renewable energy to the UK. Construction on the wind farm will provide a significant economic

boost to the region and the national economy. It is estimated that over 500 jobs will be created during the construction phase. The wind farm will support a further 60 jobs once fully operational. On an industry wide basis, it is estimated that 20,000 jobs can be created in Ireland by 2025. The company have stated that off-shore wind farms produce a large scale and reliable volume of energy making them more suitable for large scale export to the UK. James Mc Kenna, Zoe Martin,

A woman who was out walking her dog was left in a state of shock when both she and her pet were kicked by a man on his way home after being out drinking. Kieran Kearney of 7 O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk, who also threatened the woman and was abusive towards Gardai, told Dundalk District Court that he panicked on the day in question due to his fear of dogs. The court heard that on August 28, 2011, the woman was walking her dog at Ice House Hill. When the pet went towards the defendant he kicked the animal and when the woman remonstrated, he threatened her. He stated that he knew where the woman lived and he said he would get her. As the woman went save her boxer pup, she was also kicked and while she did not suffer any injury she was very

frightened. He was also abusive to the Garda and was subsequently arrested. The defendant pleaded guilty to three public order offences, assault and cruelty to animals, and his solicitor stated that he had been on his way home from drinking when the incident happened. “He was frightened by the dog and panicked. His panic was amplified by the drink and he foolishly kicked out. He over-reacted and wants to apologise for his over-reaction”, he stated. At that stage, Judge William Hamill, gave the defendant the opportunity to apologise in person. When this was accepted by the victim, Judge Hamill, who noted that Mr Kearney had two previous public order convictions, adjourned the case until February 27 for a Community Service Report.

The students of Coláiste Rís are getting ready for battle this week as the school’s Irish Junior Debating team prepare to argue in the All-Ireland Final of Comórtas Díospóireacht Uí Chadhain, the national debating championship. Team Captain Conchúir Ó Beaglaoich will be accompanied by Bearnard Mac Thoirealaigh and Hannah Ní Fhionnagáin in Wednesday night’s final, which returns to Trinity College, Dublin, the scene of where the school’s Senior team was triumphant exactly 12 months ago. It is amazing

that it keeps going and it would be nice to do the double this year”, he stated. The double of All-Ireland titles in successive years is something that has never been achieved by the school. Team mentor, Seán Ó Coigligh, while hopeful of success, refused to be drawn on his students’ chances. “When you get to the final you know that they have it in

Pupils celebrate St Brigid’s Day The children at Faughart National School have been working extra hard in preparation for the coming St Brigid’s Day celebrations this February 1. Continuing the dearly held tradition in the school, both parents and pupils have dedicated themselves to making St Brigid’s crosses. Last week the school invited children, parents and the community to morning workshops in the art of making the St Brigid’s Cross from the traditional

rushes or straw. They spent the mornings passing the craft of making the cross onto the younger generations. “We’re fortunate that there are so many members of our community who are skilled at making these crosses,” said a spokesperson from the school’s Parents Association, “and we are only too happy to help teach the children how they are made”. “Every year it’s a real community effort with rushes being

sourced and delivered by the trailer load to the school by volunteers, where they are sorted, trimmed and prepared for being turned into the beautiful, distinctive crosses.” Tradition goes that you make or get a St Brigid’s Cross on February 1, and place it in your home to ward off fire and evil. It is believed that St Brigid was born the area and thousands attend the religious festivities dedicated to the catholic saint every year. The school s is also

offering to help anyone who wants to brush up or learn the skill up until February 1. The school is open each morning this week from 9.15am until Noon for demonstrations, and all day Friday February 1. “It’s something we enjoy doing every year and the children have a wonderful time learning how to make the crosses,’ said Mrs Cumiskey, Acting Principal. ‘Everyone helps out – even the Junior infants. There are a Pupils at Faughart NS preparing for St Brigid’s Day lot of crosses to be made”.

Dundalk’s creative community hub based in Muirhevnamor is planning to recreate the Battle of the Boyne through a historical drama, written and produced by the participants. The project will see a group visit the site of the 1690 showdown between the two claim-

Over to you Do you think the Catholic Church should allow women to become priests?

Pat Callan

Colin Byrne

I think it’s about time they allowed women in alright. I can’t think of any good reason in this day and age why they are not allowed to become priests.

No. I actually think women have enough on their plate as it is without having to deal with the problems associated with the priesthood

Man didn’t avail of chance he was given A man who attempted to break-up a fight involving some of his friends ended up on the wrong side of the Gardai after refusing to leave the scene. Ryan Duffy, 12 Rathmore Cottages, Kilkerley, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court to face public order charges as a result of the incident on September 9, 2012. Gardai were called to Earl St to deal with an altercation involving several males and the defendant, who was intoxicated, twice refused to leave. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client was not the instigator of the fight but was trying to break it

up. During the course of his efforts, he became excited and over-reacted when the Gardai made their request. He added that his client became a father the day after the incident and had given up drink since Christmas. Judge William Hamill noted that the defendant had previous convictions and had been given an opportunity on a previous occasion. “He already got a chance with Community Service but he still persists with this behaviour”. Judge Hamill stated that he would consider 175 hours of Community Service in lieu of a prison sentence as he adjourned the case for a report to March 27.

I would have no problem whatsoever with a woman saying Mass. Let them in I say. It’s time to move on and get with the times.

Brendan McFadden Kathleen McConnell I think women should become priests. They are human just like everybody else and there is no reason why they couldn’t do just as good a job as men.

I don’t think I would like to see women priests. I think the system as it is is fine and I probably would leave it alone if I’m being honest.

the Market Bar, the new and exciting venue in Dundalk will have its official opening celebrations this weekend, commencing on Thursday 31st and running through to Sunday night, 3rd February. The new venue, located at the top of Clanbrassil St close to the Market Square, has become very popular since opening its doors just before Christmas, and already it has built up a strong clientele and received rave reviews. The Market Bar is a family run Tapas bar, headed by Tony MacGuinness and his daughter Michelle, with the aim of combining a unique eating out experience

with excellent value in a very comfortable atmosphere, with its Tapas menu and set menu offers. Tony believes that the variety on offer at the Market Bar makes it the perfect venue for people no matter what time of the day it is and that they have a menu to cater for all tastes. “The Market Bar has a great location convenient to the Square and we have built up a great clientele already. People are saying that the variety and quality of food on offer is excellent, while it is all at a very affordable price. “The great thing about the Market Bar is that you can enjoy the experience no

Peter Clifford, the award-winning chef at The Market Bar, explained that there is much more than a Tapas menu, as they cater for all tastes. “The Tapas have been a huge hit with customers as it provides them with something different. Most of the Tapas are Irish based but with Spanish ingredients and we have had a hugely positive reaction. “We also have what might be described as a ‘traditional menu’ but we have put our style on it by creating a modern twist. “At lunchtime we try to keep things

simple and quick for people who have to get back to work, but in the evening the pace will change for people who have more time to spend over their meal”, explained Peter. Peter brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Market Bar having trained in London at the Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and 15 by Jamie Oliver, before working at Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud in Dublin. The official opening celebrations will commence on Thursday January 31 and will feature live music each night up to Sunday, including acoustics, jazz bands and Spanish guitar. The Market Bar are

Vantastival up for music award Vantastival, the threeday-long music festival that takes place in Bellurgan Park near Dundalk has been nominated for six Irish Festival Awards. The event which is going into its fifth year was nomi-

nated for the top gong – Best Small Festival. They also got a prestigious nomination for Best Line-up for the 2012 Vantastival bill which was topped by God is an Astronaut and Cathy Davey as well as The Original Rudeboys and Ham Sandwich.

The festival’s family friendly atmosphere and facilities earned the festival a nomination for the Family Festival Award and their green credentials placed them in the Social Responsibility Category. The festival was also nomi-

nated in the Best Service and Best Toilets categories. Voting is open to the public until January 31. This is the first year that voting will be weighted by the capacity of the venue, meaning smaller festivals can be more fairly

compared with larger ones, increasing Vantastival chances of walking away with some awards. The festival has been nominated in previous festival awards and won the Best Toilets Award in 2009.

Birds through Irish Eyes Legendary Irish birder, Anthony McGeehan, will give a talk entitled “Birds Through Irish Eyes” at 8pm on Monday February 4 upstairs at the Spirit Store. Nobody has to travel far to see birds. The back garden will do. And there, not far from the kitchen window, are several species that conceal mysteries. Why do Coal Tits drop most of the seeds that they extract from feeders? A strange thing to do when the species probably possesses the largest brain of any Irish bird. As human birdwatchers, we seldom listen to what birds tell us. In the case of the ubiquitous Woodpigeon, no Field Guide inter-

pretation has ever unraveled the key to its voice. So, from Coal IQ to cracking Woodpigeon’s coded messages, the February 4 talk will concentrate on ‘the birds under our noses’. There should be no shortage of inspiration as well as an incentive to try out tips for yourself. Anthony’s talk carries on from the information in Birds through Irish Eyes, signed copies of which will also be available. Anthony will also touch on his famous “Magic Pelagic” talk at the end. Anthony has been interested in birds since childhood. As usual entry is free and all are welcome.

Słowo „kolęda” pochodzi od łacińskiego wyrazu „calendae” oznaczającego pierwszy dzień miesiąca, w którym mijał termin płacenia długów. Kalendy styczniowe, które rozpoczynały nowy rok, były wielkim świętem. Zbiegały się one z grudniowymi uroczystościami ku czci Saturna - czasem pojednania, zabawy i podarków. Chrześcijanie chcieli wpisać się w ten kalendarz i stopniowo zastąpić pogańskie zwyczaje ewangelicznymi. Pieśni, jakie śpiewano na początku, zawierały życzenia pomyślności i urodzaju (Saturn był patronem rolników i gospodarzy), pochwały i podziękowania dla dobroczyńców. Z czasem zaczęły przenikać do nich treści chrześcijańskie. Kiedy dokładnie w Polsce zaczęto kolędować, nie wiadomo. Ślady pierwszych pieśni o tematyce Bożego Narodzenia znajdujemy w dialogach i misteriach staropolskich oraz poematach zwanych rotułami. Nazwę „kolędy” otrzymały one dopiero ok. XVII w. Niektóre dawne kolędy śpiewamy do dziś. Najstarsze z nich to m. in. Anioł pasterzom mówił (XVI w.), W żłobie leży, Przybieżeli do Betlejem, Nowy Rok bieży, Gdy śliczna Panna (XVII w.), Jezus malusieńki, Lulajże Jezuniu, Ach, ubogi żłobie, Bóg się rodzi, Tryumfy Króla niebieskiego (XVIII w.). Teksty kolęd pisali początkowo zapewne ludzie związani z parafią (księża, zakonnicy, słudzy, uczniowie), potem także artyści. Wśród nich najbardziej znani to Piotr Skarga, Franciszek Karpiński, Teofil Lenartowicz. Poprzez wspólne śpiewanie kolęd artyści i publiczność tworzą prawdziwie rodzinną atmosferę, którą trudno oddać słowami – trzeba posłuchać i pośpiewać, by zrozumieć! W Polsce 2 lutego kończy się okres bożonarodzeniowy, do tego dnia powinnismy rozebrać choinkę, świąteczne dekoracje oraz zaprzestać śpiewania kolęd, aż do nastepnej Gwiazdki.

Darts leagues go down to the wire It looks like a week of drama for the dart players in the town as all divisions are poised on a knife edge going into the final week of the league. The Premier division sees the Warriors of MacNamees leading The Stags by a single point after the postponed top of the table clash took place on Monday night of last week. A four-two win for Macs has made the last week of darts very important indeed. This victory followed by a Six-Nil win over the Stags Gold on Thursday has Macs in the driving position while The Stags maintained the chase by beating a strong Fairways side Five-One. The Martlets may yet have a major say in the league as they play The Stags next week and a win would guarantee MacNamees the league title. In Division One a refixed match on Monday Night will have a major impact on the look of the league table going into Thursday night’s last round of fixtures. A draw between the top two teams in this division, O’Connells and the Stags Green has

left the door open for a lot of leap frogging into the top spot by any one of four teams if results favour them. Darren “Pigeon” Kerley fought back in his game against Tommy Bradley senior to come from one-nil down to secure a Two-one win for the green team from the Stags Head. The second division game between the Stags White and The Malthouse had some big scores and big finishes to make for a great game with finishes of Shanghai 120 by Aidan “Sid” Carr and 89 by Kieran McCrave hit on the night. Kieran McCrave’s team have fought hard throughout the league and have ensured that they keep chasing the leading two Courtneys and the Castle Bar Knights. In all divisions its going right down to the wire and a thrilling night is expected next Thursday and no doubt tabs will be kept on all games throughout the night. Best to luck to all players in all divisions and lets look forward to watching the pressure build and crowning the new league champions.

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, has welcomed confirmation from the new Chairman of the Louth Meath Hospital Group, Ian Carter, and the General Manager of the Louth/Meath Group of Hospitals, Margaret Sword, that the 25 beds in the new set-down ward in the Louth County Hospital are in the process of being filled. Deputy Fitzpatrick was speaking following a meeting with both representatives.

“I am delighted to have received confirmation that the 25 beds in the new set-down ward are in the process of being filled. This will go a long way towards taking the pressure off the Emergency Department in Our Lady’s Hospital in Drogheda. “I also received confirmation that the ward will remain open for six to 12 months and I am hopeful that we can keep these beds open permanently, as well as keeping the opening hours for the same period.”

Shock and sadness is felt throughout the community The murder of Detective Adrian Donohoe caused shock throughout the community as people remembered the popular Garda who made Dundalk his home. Originally from Kilnaleck in Co Cavan, Adrian played football with the local Crosserlough GAA Club. He was stationed in Dundalk after graduating from Templemore and continued his football career when he lined out with St Patrick’s. Adrian became a valued member of the team for a number of years and after hanging up his boots he began coaching at underage level. He married Caroline having met the Clare native at training college, and the set up home in Lordship where they lived with their two children, Amy and Niall. Not surprisingly there were many tributes paid since his tragic death, and among those were local parish priest, Fr Padraig Murphy, who attended the scene shortly after the shooting. “It is difficult to come to terms with what has happened in our parish. It is very sad and people can’t comprehend that this could happen in our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children and family at this time”. Louth TD, Peter Fitzpatrick, also spoke highly of Adrian. “I have known Detective Donohoe for many years. I played football with him and managed his local GAA team. He was a gentle giant whose wife and two children meant the world to him. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.”

A nation shares Dundalk’s grief

Continued on Page 21 Patrick’s GFC. He was very good at his job and gave 100 per cent to any task he undertook. His loss will be immense. “Adrian was a man who had time for everybody. He was very amenable and loved by all, whether it was a sixyear-old out training or the older generation. He was a real role model for people to look up to.

21

“The tragedy is that Adrian died protecting the parents and grandparents of the children he coached at St Patrick’s, which sums up what he did for the community. “We are devasted to have lost a friend and our thoughts go out to Caroline and the family, and we hope that they can find some way to come to terms with this evil”, added Alan.

Stephen Gunne who is Managing Director of local auctioneering firm Property Partners Laurence Gunne has recently completed his exams to become an accredited mediator. Mediation is one of the most up and coming forms of alternative dispute resolution were parties who are locked in a dispute can enter the mediation process in an effort to get a satisfactory resolution without having to go through the court process. Dear Editor, I would like to express through your column our sincere thanks and gratitude to the people of Dundalk and surrounds who visited our Remembrance Tree throughout the 2012 festive season and to thank those who placed memory ribbons and donated to our designated charities. The multitude of remembrance ribbons placed on the tree, together with the voluntary contributions

donated towards supporting local community organisations and charities, reflected the thoughfulness and generosity of people in a spirit of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed away. I would also like to thank members of the clergy who officiated at our interdenominational prayer service of thanksgiving and the many volunteers who attended at the tree throughout its week of opening.

The Rotary Remembrance Tree has now become an accepted and symbolic part of Christmas in Dundalk each year and we look forward to receiving the public’s continuing support for same when we promote the spirit of remembrance at this time in the years ahead.

FIAT PANDA 4X4

Fiat have just announced details of the third generation Panda 4x4.(photo attached) The compact Panda features 4x4 all-wheel drive system with two differentials and an electronically controlled coupling governed by an electronic control unit. By analysing the information received from sensors on the vehicle, the control unit can apportion power between the front and rear axles depending on the amount of grip available. The system is completely automatic and does not need any driver input. In normal dry conditions, 98 per cent of the engine torque is transferred to the front wheels. This means the car handles in a very similar way to a front-wheel drive model and there is no increase in fuel consumption

or tyre wear. The Fiat Panda 4x4 features ESP (Electronic Stability Program) with ELD (Electronic Locking Differential) as standard. Should you like the looks but not need 4x4 drive then you can opt for the Panda Trekking which features the Panda 4x4’s raised ride height but only drives the front-wheels. There is a choice of two engines, one petrol and one diesel for both models. 875cc TwinAir Turbo: produces 85 hp in normal mode or 77.5 in eco mode. The 2wd Trekking model will do 171kph/106mph and reach 0-100kph/62mph in 11.5 seconds. The official combined fuel figure is 4.6L/100km(61.4mpg) and CO2 emissions are rated as 105 g/km. The 4x4 model has a top speed of166kph /103mph and accelera-

tion figure of 12.1 seconds to 100kph/62mph. On the combined cycle the fuel figure is 4.9L/100km(57.6mpg) and CO2 emissions are rated as 114 g/km. 1.3-litre MultiJet 2 turbo diesel – produces 75 hp. The 2wd Trekking model has a top speed of 161kph/100mph and will reach 100kph/62mph in 13.2 seconds. The official combined fuel figure is 4.2L/100km(67.3mpg) and CO2 emissions are rated as 109 g/km. The four-wheel drive model has a top speed of 159kph/99mph and accelerates to 100kph62mph in 14.5 seconds. On the combined cycle the fuel figure is 4.7L/100km(60.1mpg) and CO2 emissions are 125 g/ km. Both engines come with Start&Stop and a Gear Shift Indicator (GSI) which sug-

gests to the driver the optimum point to change gear in order to achieve the best economy. The MultiJet 2 version of the Panda 4x4 sits 16cm above the ground while the TwinAir’s ground clearance is a still generous 15cm. The maximum angle of gradient that the Panda 4x4 can approach without any part of its bodywork touching the ground is 20 degrees (MultiJet). The maximum departure angle, or angle of gradient from which it can drive away without touching the ground, is 36 degrees (TwinAir) and its breakover angle at the top of a hill is 20 degrees. The Fiat Panda 4x4 features specially developed 175/65 R15 84T M+S tyres (Mud and Snow Tyres, not too be confused with winter tyres). One of the key features of

the Panda is the flexible seating options the driver’s seat now has vertical adjustment available while there are also multiple configurations for the rear seats. By sliding the (optional) rear bench into the fully forward position – 16cm of travel – the boot’s capacity is increased from 225 to 260 litres, making it one of the most spacious in its segment. Folding the rear seats down gives a load space of 870 litres, 36 litres more than the previous generation Panda.

Various seat configurations the driver’s seat is available with adjustable height while the front passenger seat can be fitted with a fold-down back rest. This creates a table that’s handy for picnics or as a worktop, and with the rear seats folded provides a space that’s more than two metres in length, allowing long loads to be carried. The rear bench comes in standard two-seater guise with a folding unsplit back rest. But it is also available

with the two seats sliding lengthwise, with a 50/50 folding back rest, three seats with folding backrest, and three seats with 60/40 split folding backrest. Standard equipment on the Panda 4x4 and Trekking includes air conditioning, Blue&Me multimedia system, ESP, a CD/MP3 radio, 15-inch alloy wheels with Mud and Snow tyres, electric heated door mirrors, central locking with remote control, and rear head restraints.
