DUNDALK could be set for a brand new sports arena with a local group of sports clubs coming together to try and secure funding for the ambitious project. Majella Watters who is involved with Setanta FC in Dundalk said the initiative was born after a few of the local sports clubs around town were rejected for the latest sports capital funding grants. “A few of the local soccer teams and sports clubs didn’t receive any grants in the latest round of sports capital funding and through Barney Connolly we came together and formed a committee with the aim of trying to secure funding for a new sports arena in the town.

“So far we have got Redeemer FC, Shamrock FC Rangers FC, Setanta FC on board with O’Hanlon Park Boxing club also showing interest. Basically not many of our clubs have their own pitches and we want to have a sports arena that will service a number of the clubs with training, astro turf and normal football pitches.” explained Majella. “We are inviting sports clubs around Dundalk to get in touch with us and hear what we have to say an d decide if they want to get on board. We will have a short meeting next Tuesday night February 12 at 8pm in the Jean Corr room in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre. Continued on Page 21

Crowds show their respect outside Dundalk Garda Station

Dundalk and the Cooley Peninsula came to a virtual standstill on Wednesday of last week as thousands turned out to pay their respects to Det Garda Adrian Donohoe.

The State Funeral for the much-loved and respected 41-year-old father of two saw friends and colleagues from all over the country join Adrian’s family on an emotional day.

As Garda colleagues intensified their efforts to catch the killers, Fr Michael Cusack called on people with information to turn in those responsible. Continued on Page 2, 8 & 9

Estate sale may bring relief for Carlinn Hall families The two families living in one of the area’s largest ghost estates, Carlinn Hall, are hoping their problems may soon be over as a buyer has come forward for the property. The families say they were contacted

by the receivers for the property, RSM Farrell Grant Sparks, before Christmas who informed them that a sale had been agreed on the property which has been on the market for more than 12 months. However five weeks down the line the families still do not know who the buyer is. They say they have had indications that the new buyer would relieve some of the problems that the families have been suffering since moving into the estate. The sewerage system will be connected to the mains and the issues with the heating system will be addressed by the new buyer the residents were assured. The Sally and Humston families who have been living in the ghost estate for around five years have been told that the buyer is the best possible one for the estate. But in the absence of direct dealings with the buyer, they are growing in-

The families bought in 2007, in what was to be the Ireland largest sustainable housing development; it was to set the standard of energy efficiency but the developers, Keelagh Homes, hit financial difficulties before the estate was finished. Ricky secures All-Ireland title In his first full year of competitive boxing Ricky Nesbitt has succeeded in capturing an Irish title for himself and his local club Dealgan. Ricky stepped into the boxing ring in the National Stadium on Saturday January 19 in the semi–final of the 51kg Flyweight division to box his opponent, Ben Nelson from the newly formed Townland boxing club in Belfast. Ricky found himself leading 7–4 at the end of the first, and after a close second he was 11-6 ahead before winning comfortably. The following Saturday in the final of the 51kg division Ricky came up against Cavan BC’s Sebastian Stasi-

aczck, a heavily muscled southpaw. When the round ended Ricky found himself behind on points 3–1. Again he did what was asked of him with great determination and courage and due largely to the wonderful spar-

ring he had had prior to this contest with his clubmates, Amy Broadhurst, European Champion and Kalum Mc Conville, Senior Cadet Champion, both southpaws, he found himself ahead by a single score as the bell sounded to

end the second. In a thrilling third round, Ricky showed great courage and strength to come out on top to land the All-Ireland Novice champion at 51kg with a 14-13 win. Ricky also boxed in the National Intermediates before Christmas and was only narrowly beaten by the eventual winner. Anyone out there prepared to say that this young man, Ricky “Nasty” Nesbitt, won’t be an Olympian in 2016, Ricky will be looking to continue the progress he has made over the past two years with many tipping him to be a contender for a place in the 2016 Olympics.

Realt Na Mara students unveil ‘love blanket’

in Brief

The students and teachers of Realt na Mara National School unveiled their ‘Love Blanket’ this week after working on it for many months. The blanket is part of the global Blanket Earth Project which will be showcased at the Olympics in Brazil in 2016. Students, teachers and parents looked on proudly at the blanket which every child in the school contributed to. Each class chose a symbol to represent a positive aspect of their school, and all combined under the overall theme of forgiveness. The blanket will now join others which will be unveiled at a special event in Grafton Street before it makes its way around Europe and South America before joining the 2016 celebrations in Brazil. Family’s thanks for Baby Ellen support By Niamh Kirk

Baby Ellen Barron McGee who captured the hearts of the people of Dundalk has died after a brave battle with a rare genetic disorder which also claimed the life of her 18 month old brother Christian ten years ago. Baby Ellen died peacefully in Temple Street Children’s hospital on January 25 having battled a disease called Mitochondrial disorder throughout her short life. Last year a committee was set up to raise funds to send Ellen to the US for life saving stem cell treatment in a bid to extend her life. People in Dundalk and throughout the country got fully behind the cause and Ellen travelled to the states for two rounds of treatment. Unfortunately for

Ellen’s parents, Tom and Lisa, her brave battle against the disease ended after she picked up a virus just before Christmas. A statement released from the Ellen Barron McGee Fundraising Committee, read “It’s with the heaviest of hearts and the deepest sorrow, that we announce the death of our angel Ellen. Ellen had been poorly for the last seven weeks, and fought her wee heart out to survive, but God had different plans for her. “We would like to thank every single one of you who contributed to our fund to save our wee Angel, also those of you who fundraised all over the country. You showed so much love to our Ellen, she became the nation’s daughter, sister and friend. “You will never know the extent of our

gratitude for your generosity. We will be forever thankful to you all. “Our Ellen is now in the arms of her grandfather Thomas McGee, and in his other arm holds her dear brother Christian. The little fairy’s wings were too strong to hold her here in this earth, she needed to fly to a better place,

and her beloved granda and brother met her with open arms on the dark Friday night. “The committee, parents Lisa and Tom, her twin sister Grace, her grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and friends would like this opportunity to say thank you”, the statement read.

“For God’s sake turn these people in”—Fr Cusack By Niamh Kirk

As the shock over the shooting of Det Garda Adrian Donohoe the community subsides, anger and disgust have become dominant amid calls for those protecting the killers to come forward. At the funeral service on Wednesday Fr Michael Cusack called on anybody with information to come forward. He said that in not doing so they were prolonging the family’s pain and denying them closure. “I think we need to look into the eyes of Caroline, look into the eyes of Adrian’s parents and allow what is best within us, our humanity, to recognise what evil can do when it is allowed to flourish in a community “If there is anyone who knows anything about that, if you have any semblance of goodness in you, for God’s sake, turn these people in. If

not, you’re allowing Satan to ruin the lives of more and more people”, said Fr Cusack. Justice Minister Alan Shatter added to the call to the community saying “There are husbands, wives, sons, daughters, neighbours, friends, who must know the individuals engaged in this. They are not five people operating in a vacuum.” Last week the Garda Commissioner Callinan said that he was hopeful the killers would

be brought before the courts. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that no resources would be spared in the hunt for the killers and that they would serve the full 40 years for their crime. National teams have been assisting local Gardai as they continue their investigation, as are teams from the PSNI. The Irish League of Credit Unions has offered a reward of €50,000 for information that will lead to the arrest and pros-

ecutions in the case. Gardai are looking for information about the movements of the navy Volkswagon Passat with an 08 Dublin registration that was stolen in Clogherhead late on Tuesday January 22/23 between 11.30 pm and 4.30 am . There was a large funeral held in the area at the time and it might help jog people’s memories of the night. The car was found burnt out in South Armagh on Sunday and Gardai believe that it remained in the area for a number of days before the robbery. CCTV from local businesses, the Credit Union and petrol stations are being examined. However, there are those who are protecting the people who were involved. Crowds turn out to pay respects By Niamh Kirk

Louth residents came out in force last week for the final journey of Det Adrian Donohoe. The funeral was attended by the President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and ministers as well as

thousands of mourners who gathered outside St Josephs Redemptorist Church to show their respects as the funeral cortege arrived. Around 2,000 Gardaí from all over Ireland joined the procession, as did members from the other security forces. St Joseph’s church was filled and hundreds of mourners stood in a marquee provided adjacent to the church or in the car cark under a canopy of umbrellas. The Mass, presided over by Fr Michael Cusack, was broadcast to the gathered mourners. He described the fallen Garda as a perfect role model, humble and a community leader. “So many people today no longer offer their services freely to the community but Adrian always did,” said Fr Cusack. “To the local community in the Dundalk and Cooley peninsula, we are forever in your debt for the outstanding generosity you have shown to the Donohoe family and An Garda Siochana at this most difficult time,” he said Det Donohoe’s children formed part of the offertory procession. Seven-year-old Amy took the phone on which she called her father every night while he was on duty and a remote control she would hide from him. Her younger brother Niall took the football he and his father would play with and his favourite Manchester United jersey. The grey and wet weather was reflection

of the mood in Dundalk as the funeral was being held, but the sun broke through and thousands of people emerged to line the streets for the passage of the funeral cortege. The hearse travelled through Dundalk after the service and Church

bells rang out across the town. Hundreds gathered at The Crescent and joined in solemn applause when the procession stopped for a few moments in front of the Garda Station. An Taoiseach stood and paid his respects too before the procession continued to

Park Street and then on to Clanbrassil Street. Businesses closed for much of the afternoon as a mark of respect for the Garda who did so much for the local community and the sombre mood of Dundalk has been palpable since news of the shooting broke.

Huge amount of goodwill in response to act of evil

s

n dIf the callous murder of Adrian 3Donohoe displayed in chilling terms the pure evil that can be visited upon any family or comtmunity, the small crumb of comfort is that such tragic s -events providing the opportuinity to display the huge amount eof good that exists in our society. The outpouring of emotion -was heartwarming as people of lall ages and all walks of life .turned out to display their utter o revulsion at such a cold and o cowardly act that shook a whole nnation. - The St Patrick’s GFC centre in Lordship was the focal point nthroughout the week and peonple flocked to pay their respects, -show their support for the Donohoe family and help out in any way they could. Members of the club responded magnificently in pronviding refreshments and organising car-parking throughout r sthe week as people flocked to ethe centre to sign the book of hcondolence. y It was a magnificent effort by fthe club, but they were not alone and the support of neighbours – near and far – was

The late Adrian Donohoe

something that Chairman Alan Duffy felt illustrated the real good that exists despite such tragedies. “On behalf of the St Patricks club, I want to thank everyone who helped out in any way. People really went above and beyond the call of duty and it was an indication of the esteem in which Adrian, Caroline and family were held in the area. “I don’t know how many

people I met who took time off work to come out help us over the few days. It was absolutely magnificent”, added Alan who was also very impressed by the response of the wider GAA community. “Clubs in Louth were fantastically generous and supportive over the past week and all anxious to help out. Whether it was food, equipment or just turning up to show their support, we just couldn’t believe the response. “I have to mention in particular our neighbours, Cooley Kickhams, who were brilliant especially on Wednesday when they took charge of organising traffic at the Gyles Quay end of Lordship. “The local businesses were also brilliant and the amount of food that arrived was incredible. It just shows you the good that exists”, continued Alan. As the army of volunteers and friends filtered back to the comfort of their normality, their thoughts and prayers remain with Caroline, Amy and Niall who must now come to terms with a life that will never be the same again.

Help name new kennels The Louth Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals is looking for the public to help them find a name for their new kennels. Volunteers spent countless hours working on the kennels over a six month period and they opened in July last year. The facility is one of the best in the country providing care and training for the animals before they are re-homed. The past few months have proved to be quite busy with increasing numbers of people surrendering their dogs. However, many dogs have also found a new home and the benefits of visiting the kennels and adopting a dog are many. Local

pharmacist Gerard Smith and his family had a previous bad experience with a dog. But keen to not let one bad experience put his daughter off they kept searching

for a perfect pooch. The LSPCA volunteers are dedicated not only to the care of the dogs but also to preparing them for new family. Mr Smith said that he couldn’t have asked them to make him a dog so good and suitable. “He’s a bit older and settled into the family as if he had always been there. When we are out walking he doesn’t pull on the lead. He’s really great and restored my daughter’s faith in dogs.” The kennels are run by the Department of Agriculture but largely on the efforts of their volunteers. If you have a good name to give the LSPCA’s kennels just visit their facebook page www. facebook.com/Louthspca and post your idea there.

Fine Gael TD, Peter Fitzpatick, has urged women across Louth to avail of a free smear test from a dregistered GP or women’s health -clinic in the county, for early detection of cervical cancer. x “This week is European Cervigcal Cancer Prevention Week and I ,am urging women across Louth to ,avail of a free smear test from ,your local doctor. Funded by the dDepartment of Health, this free rscheme is available to women aged between 25 and 60.

“A smear test could save your life, and, with over 300 women diagnosed with cervical cancer and 90 lives lost every year to this deadly disease, it is vitally important that women are regularly screened to detect any changes in the cells of the cervix. “Regular screening helps identify cervical cancer at an early stage and can lead to successful treatment of the disease. All you need to bring with you is your PPS number.

“I am urging every woman to take care of their health and avail of this free service during European Cervical Cancer Prevention week”, added the local TD. Thousands of GPs, practice nurses, Women’s Health, Family Planning and Well Woman Clinics all over Ireland are registered to provide smear tests. You can see a full list in the ‘Find a smeartaker - doctor’ section of the www.cervicalcheck.ie. Call CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.”

Teachers’ group call for clarity

The Ardee Celtic U-16 team that reached the last 16 of the National Cup following victory over Hodson Bay Celtic of Roscommon. The local side were 4-2 winners after an impressive display at Oriel Park thanks to two goals each from Podge McGowan and James Carraher, which sets up a meeting with Home Farm next week. There was disappointment for the U-15 team who lost out to Carrigaline Utd on a 1-0 scoreline in the National Cup. The Ardee side were unlucky as Mikey Kelly, Aidan Lee Martin and Cian Commins all went close to scoring.

Series of cultural exchanges The Yoruba descendents of Nigeria in Ireland are holding a series of cultural exchange days over two months starting this February 12.

The workshops are to take place every Tuesday evening from 6pm – 9pm at the Muirhevnamor Community Centre . The classes offer

the opportunity to learn more about the Nigeran Language and the Irish language as well as the history and background of Irish and Yoruba people.

Local guidance counsellors have called on local public representatives to make their position clear on the future of the role in schools following comments made by Minister Ruairi Quinn last week. Gerry Malone, a spokesperson for the local group of guidance counsellors, made the call after the Minister suggested that students could turn to “The cleaner or the maintenance man” for advice if required. “I am calling on all local TDs and Senators, and in particular, Mary Moran to make their position clear on this role. Senator Moran is the Labour spokesperson for education in the Senate and we would like to know where they stand”, added Mr Malone who is concerned there is an attempt being made to downgrade the role of guidance counselor. “It was surprising to read in a national newspaper on Friday last, a comment by the Minister that “Guidance Counsellors provide

guidance in relation to career options and career choices.” “The Minister has either not read the content of his own policy document, which clearly states as outlined above that the role of the Guidance Counsellor “include personal counselling, educational counselling, career counselling or a combination of all”, he added. A statement from the Irish Guidance Counsellors said: “The IGC is now calling on the Minister for Education and Science to affirm the importance of professional counselling availability to all students as outlined in his own policy document published on 31 January last. The IGC further calls on the Minister to provide schools with the dedicated resourced from September 2013 to enable them to allocate sufficient time to the qualified Guidance Counsellors, to support all the students within the school who are experiencing difficulties or are in crisis.”

Ostatni czwartek przed Środą Popielcową i Wielkim Postem, a zarazem ostatnia przed Wielkanocą okazja, by beztrosko oddać się karnawałowemu nieumiarkowaniu w jedzeniu. W imieniu Simul Polonia smacznego życzy Agnieszka Boniewicz

Southern Tenant Folk Union in Spirit Store

This week saw the release of the fifth Southern Tenant Folk Union album ‘Hello Cold Goodbye Sun’ a collection of new and original material written by five of the award winning Scottish collective’s members. Fresh from a sold out UK tour, Southern Tenant Folk Union, who won Americana Artist of the Year 2010 in the UK and feature Belfast born banjo player Pat McGarvey, will return for a nine date Irish tour in support of the album starting on February 7 in The Spirit Store, Dundalk.

With a more difficult and emotionally charged pre-production process than on previous albums, the band have developed a set of songs that build on some of the soundscape folk from the acclaimed fourth album Pencaitland as well as showcasing the growing songwriting, instrumental and vocal talent within the group. The album was originally proposed with a focusing theme of ‘modern horror’ as a lyrical and a musical basis for a cohesive album with influence from John Carpenter, Fabio Frizzi and Goblin.

Let us help you get ‘mortgage ready’. Louth buck national trend in housing construction figures

Stephen Gunne who is Managing Director of local auctioneering firm Property Partners Laurence Gunne has recently completed his exams to become an accredited mediator. Mediation is one of the most up and coming forms of alternative dispute resolution were parties who are locked in a dispute can enter the mediation process in an effort to get a satisfactory resolution without having to go through the court process. Stephen is already a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in Ireland and since May of last year is Chairman of the board of the Property Partners Group throughout Ireland who have 29 offices.

According to figures released by the Construction Industry Federation there was a drop of 19% in the figures for houses built in 2012 when compared to the figures for 2011. However Louth were one of just three counties to buck the national trend with an increase of 4% in house building for 2012. A total of 268 housing units were built in County Louth in 2012 which represents an increase of 11 from the previous year. Along with Longford and Sligo, Louth were the only county to show an increase. A total of 8,488 houses were built in Ireland during 2012, according to the figures published by the CIF which represents a drop of 1,992 or 19% on the figure for 2011 when a total of 10,480 houses were completed. The CIF is also predicting that the coming year will see a further slight reduction in housing units built. This is based on the drop in residential unit commencements for the first 11 months of 2012. Speaking about the figures, CIF Director General Tom Parlon said, “2012 was

a very difficult year for the Irish house building industry with the level of activity falling once more. Previously the lowest level had been the 13,887 units that were built in 1970 when the records began, but the total for

2011 dropped below that mark and 2012 has seen a further fall in completions. “There is no doubt that house building reached unsustainable levels during the boom years, but the industry has now gone through

six successive years of decline.“ he explained. “However there are some positive indicators which should start to impact on the sector soon. The commencement figures detail an increase in new builds

New sports arena plans for Dundalk From page 1 “We realise that this is an ambitious project we are undertaking but you just have to look at what the people in Muirhe vnamor achieved with their sports complex to see that dreams can become reality.

“I think that sports clubs are a vital outlet for kids and a great way to make friends and to stay fit. We need to get our kids active and get them out of the house away from their computer games” urged Majella. We are

hopeful that sports clubs from all around the town will support us in our efforts as we try and give the town a brand new sports arena for our kids.” she added. If the group’s efforts at securing funding are suc-

cessful it is hoped the arena would be built within a 5 to 10 year period with a location around the area known as the ‘Back of the Wall’ being mooted as a possibility. All sports clubs are invited to attend Tuesday’s meeting.

Monique Martin once again proved her abilities with her sword and secured a gold in the +16yr division and a silver for her forms. Two other first time competitors premiered that day in a whirlwind of headkicks and jabs. Callum O’Connor fought fantastically in his division winning his first fight ever with almost maximum scores. Callum earned himself a brilliant bronze for his efforts. Matthew Mc Quillan entered one of the biggest sections on the day and after a great win, finished his day in the quarter finals. Toxic Dump Found

Four industrial sized containers of toxic sludge have been found dumped at Lurgankeel on the Dundalk-Armagh Road. Each of the IBCs contains about 1000 litres of the toxic sludge that is left behind when agricultural diesel has had the green dye washed out. The sludge is toxic and poses an environmental threat when it leaks. The cleanup operations for Co Louth along last year cost the Irish Taxpayer more than one million euro.
