Student in clear over Guyana joke By Niamh Kirk
The case against Co Louth teenager Cillian Crossan has been dropped by Guyana’s prosecution service. The 17-year old from Lambstown, Ardee was arrested on March 29, and appeared before the magistrate on April 1 charged with threatening to shoot the country’s president, Donald Ramotar. The incident occurred in a bar in the town of Lethem when Cillian and a group of volunteer teachers were taking a break over the Easter Holiday to attend a local rodeo. His defence solicitor, Glenn Hanoman, told the court Cillian was drinking with friends when he joked about shooting the president at City Boy Club in the presence of two of
the president’s bodyguards. The comments were overheard by Amerindian Affairs Ministry Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall who approached him over what was said. Cillian was arrested and charged with a criminal offence. He pleaded ‘not guilty’ and was later released on bail of about €240 after appealing to return to help students with upcoming exams. The prosecutor in the case, Vishnu Hunte , objected to his release on bail, claiming Cillian was a flight risk and had threatened the President. President Donald Ramotar was not present at the Rodeo which was being held in the town at the time. Full story on page 13

ning through the field. There had been around 15 horses grazing in the field without the owner’s permission since before Christmas and the local authorities are attempting to identify the owners. The horses appear to have been previously handled as some have halters on them. However the problem with abandoned horses has reached crisis point in the North East and in the absence of an outlet for the animals they will have to be put down, according to Louth County Veterinary officer, Gareth Shine. “There is a glut of horses in the county at the moment. I had seven calls out to horses over the weekend alone,” he explained.
Mr Shine added that so far this year they have taken in more horses than in all of 2012. The lack of options and outlets for horses has led to effective cull. Warning signs have been erected in the site to let the owners of the horses know that they will be soon be seized. Louth County Council is one of only a few in Ireland with stables, but these are full, as are the rescue stables and shelter. Once seized the horses will be kept for five days before being put down. “No one is tending them, and they cannot be left to starve to death. We have a holding policy of five days,” said Mr Shine who described the situation with abandoned horses as ‘grim’.

They were already in an advanced state of decomposition when the remains were discovered. Members of the Local Authority’s veterinary service and animal welfare officer Fiona Squibb inspected the bodies during the week before the animals were eventually removed on Friday afternoon. Such was the advanced state of decomposition it is not possible to tell how the animals died. They were lying in a channel of water which was run-

She is asking for people to donate old books and to come along and pick up a bite of baked goods and a book to help support the school’s development. Martin McElligott, Lifestyle Photography, will also be helping the project by taking a portrait photograph which will be printed and mounted on Thursday 6th June for only €10.
SIPTU Home Support workers, previously known as Home Helps, are to hold a protest against continuing government cutbacks to services in Dundalk town centre this coming Friday June 7. The protest forms part of SIPTU’s Time To Care campaign which is calling for a restoration of hours for vital services and proper contracts of employment for those working in the sector. Protesters will gather in the
Square at 3pm before marching to the local HSE Offices on Market Street to hand in a petition with over 15,000 signatures calling on the government to reverse cuts to services. Vital Home Support services to the elderly and disabled suffered 500,000 hours of cuts at the beginning of 2012, and last September the HSE slashed a further 200,000 hours from service provision.

DUNDALK received news of a further jobs boost earlier this week when Prometric announced that 24 more jobs were opening up in the company. This takes the total jobs in their Dundalk facility to the milestone number of 100, and comes one full year o ahead of schedule in terms of expan-
sion of its Dundalk operation and job creation. The recruitment drive has already begun with 30 high skilled IT jobs positions open in the Dundalk facility. Using a prime location in Dundalk, the research and testing company operate a 20 hours global workday, facilitating operations in more than 160 countries. In Ireland they help
administer the Driver Theory Test. “Prometric is a perfect example of a company that follows the sun, and can deal with the west coast of the United States as easily at it communicates with Asia because of Ireland’s unique geographic location, “ said Louth TD and Minister of State, Fergus O’Dowd.
The Dundalk centre helps run the company’s global executive leadership, test publishing, business development, operations, software engineering, business and systems analysis, project management, human resources, finance, marketing and graphic design and accounting. In 2011 the company announced it was to open its
Global operations Centre in the Finnibar Business and Technology Park. Within 6 months it had completed the €800k facility and in June last year, it boasted 52 employees. The aim had been to see this expand to 100 by 2014, but they hit targets one year ahead of schedule. Prometric’s ties to Dundalk run deeper than just job crea-
tion as the company has taken on a business community leadership role. Taking an active involvement in young peoples’ educations and development, the company places volunteers in classrooms in Dundalk where they serve as mentors to young people. They also have growing links with DkIT with whom they share resources and facilitate
student internship and training. From the outset the company was willing to dig deep into their pockets to support the area where it has made its home, and they now sponsor this weekend’s Taín Festival. Their Vice president Holly Dance, was the first from a foreign company to serve on the Chamber of Commerce.

Six members of Dundalk’s Red Cross will fly the flag for Ireland next week in Salzburg, Austria where the FACE 2013 competition will take place. FACE is the First Aid Convention in Europe and pits 26 teams against each other to find out who are the best team in Europe. Last year the competition took place in Dundalk with Italy coming out on top. As Dundalk Red Cross team member Orla Sheridan explained the team will fly out to Austria next Wednesday as they prepare for the competition which will be officially launched on Friday June 14 with an opening ceremony. “There are eight of us in total flying to Austria. Myself, Padraig Duffy, Dave and Paul Nordon, Miriam Watters and Marie Lawless are on the team while Irish Red Cross vice chairman Tom Horwell and team trainer Geraldine Lawless will be accompanying us. “We got to represent Ireland at the championships by winning the Presidents Cup which is a national team competition with the six person team having to deal with all types of scenarios
The local Red Cross team that will be representing Ireland in Austria
such as, negotiating the treatment of hostages with armed terrorists to dealing with a motorbike and car collision to name only two of the five different stations that had to be completed.” explained Orla. This will be Orla’s second time representing Ireland abroad as she was part of the Irish team who came third in Serbia back in 2010. “Myself and Marie Lawless were part of the Irish team which competed in Serbia in 2010 so I suppose we will have an idea what to expect. We spent a day training down at the Marshes Shopping centre last week so we are ready and raring to go and looking forward to
the experience. “‘The competition is based around simulated emergency situations, and tests the response and reaction time of the six team members. It is very tough and we’ll all have to be on the ball as we are marked on response time and leadership skills. “I’d like to thank the Marshes shopping centre and the Dundalk Fire brigade for all their help over the last while in getting us ready for the event and hopefully we can do Ireland proud.” added Orla. The FACE competition’s opening ceremony takes place next Friday with the competition taking place on Saturday.

Cuts force closure of Simon Community Gatehouse project By Paul Byrne
The Simon Community have been forced to close down their ‘Gatehouse Project’ house which provided accommodation for up to seven people who sleep rough nightly. Located on Laurel Road the shelter opened from 9pm to 9am providing a bed, warmth, a meal and general support but has been closed this week due to a ‘significant’ reduction of statutory funding. The operation will now be transferred to the Simon’s Barrack St premises. Although not
ideal, Simon Community manager Niall Mulligan said there was no other option available to the organisation. “Due to significant statutory funding reductions the board of directors of Dundalk Simon Community has reluctantly taken the decision to close our night shelter in The Laurels. Over its 10 year history, the night shelter has been the difference between a core group of men and women having a bed for the night or sleeping rough on the streets of Dundalk. The service will now operate from our emergency accommoda-
tion project in Barrack Street. “We would like to thank all members of the public for their continued support for our work. The Simon Community has been working in Dundalk for 40 years. The need for our services remains crucial and we will continue to do everything in our power to support people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in our community.” he explained. “We’re struggling to get by just like everybody else. Our statutory income has reduced significantly and we are re-
liant on the generosity of the general public”, added Niall. “They have been great in supporting us over the years and I hope they continue to do so. Last weekend we raised €7000 thanks to a Tesco bag packing initiative in Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan. We’d like to say a big thank you to everybody who helped us out. €7000 was a fantastic result. “We are having a Church Gate collection on June 8 and 9 around Dundalk and hopefully people can help us out over that weekend,” added Niall.

sports as possible and have fun in the sun. Pupils took part in the traditional sports day races, from ‘Egg and Spoon’ to sack races as well as some game unique to the school.

Cycling News
The Louth Prague Cycling team, making a return to the An Post Rás, after a 6 year absence, had an outstanding race in the eight day professional international event. The race was a mix of professional continental teams and amateur Irish county teams. Before the race few would have tipped the Louth team to be amongst the best amateur teams in the race, as Dublin, Cork, Tipperary and Meath all possessed very strong line ups. However when the race crossed the final finish line in Skerries the Louth team were second amateur team overall, behind the vastly experienced Cork team. The team was comprised of Rás veterans Roger Aiken and Colm Quinn, Ray O’Shuaghnessy riding the event for the second time along with newcomers Ultan Coyle and Bryan McCrystal. O’Shuaghnessy unlucky to crash out on the second day, and while Aiken was a known quantity in Irish cycling circles and had an outstanding race to finish in seventh overall, it was McCrystal who
Council aim to deal with rent arrears Two-thirds of the people on Dundalk Town Council’s housing list are in arrears according to senior executive officer David Storey. There are approximately 1500 people on the list in total of which 1055 are in arrears. 432 of these are in arrears for rents greater than 12 weeks owed. During the monthly Town Council meeting David Storey urged anybody in arrears to engage with the council to try and come up with a plan to pay off what is owed.
The Louth team put in an impressive display
was an absolute revelation in the event. His most outstanding contribution was seen on stage 6 into Carlow, when himself and Aiken remained as two of only a handful of amateurs remaining in the leading group. Aiken who was still in the hunt for the win suffered an untimely puncture and was seeing his hopes of a high overall placing disappear up the road. While Aiken received a working wheel from the Louth team car, McCrystal dropped back and waited for his team captain. Working together they regained contact with the bunch, whom were in full flight for a sprint finish. With Aiken safely back in the bunch, McCrystal moved up to take the day’s prize for the first county rider home, a truly remarkable performance. Quinn completing his fourth Rás had another solid performance, while Dundalk native Coyle, now resident in London, also had a great race. He coped well with the transition to bunch racing and along with Quinn did plenty of work.
After months of growing concerns that funding for the project would be lost, the green light has finally been given to the Narrow Water Bridge. Last week the North’s Finance Minister Sammy Wilson made the announcement that they would press ahead with the bridge spanning Carlingford Lough between Omeath and Warrenpoint. Louth Economic Forum, Chamber of Commerce, Local Authorities, local TDs and senators on both sides of the border welcomed the decision. While describing the occasion as historic, Forum Chairman Padraic White said, “The importance of this bridge cannot be overstated. It will be of huge benefit on both sides of the border, opening up a whole new area of as yet untapped tourism potential as well as making this area more attractive to investors and creating employment opportunities. It truly is an historic occasion.” It will be a 195 metre long, singlecarriageway bridge that ‘swings’ open to allow boats pass through the lough. The towers at either side of the bridge will be 90m on the Omeath side and 37m at Warrenpoint respectively. The project is being managed by Louth County Council who is joined by Newry and Mourne District Council when seeking funding from the Special European Union Projects Body.
According to Louth County Council the project has advanced to the stage where they have shortlisted tenders. They were awaiting confirmation of funding to being making final decisions and progressing to the next phase of development. The project leaders confirmed that there will be a number of compulsory purchase orders in respect of lands in County Louth. There are no purchase orders in Co Down but any land requirements in County Down will be managed by Newry and Mourne District Council. Local representatives welcomed the announcement and, referring to the recent Gateway Report, look forward to the boost it should give to the area. Joan Martin, County Manager, Louth Local Authorities added that it was “another great step towards work commencing on the physical delivery of this long-planned bridge. With tremendous social and economic benefits, Narrow Water Bridge has also been supported by Fáilte Ireland in recognition of the contribution it can make to capitalising on the tourism potential of areas around Carlingford Lough.” “The bridge will also increase traffic between the new Mourne Coastal Drive and the Boyne Valley Drive. We look forward to working with our partners in delivering the bridge on time and on budget.” It is expected the bridge will be completed in 2015.
One Direction fans queue
“Almost two thirds of people on the housing list are in arrears and there is an obligation for all of those people to come in and talk to us and work out ways to pay their rent.” he explained. “We have a system in place for people in arrears and we ask people to contact your local housing office in Dundalk and advise of your predicament. “A payment plan should be agreed with the Housing Office, to address the arrears matter, ideally through the House-
hold Budget model.” he added. County manager Joan Martin said that arrears were prevalent in all input streams for Dundalk Town Council and stated that these arrears would be ‘vigorously pursued’ “We’re looking at better ways to get this money that is owed into us. There seems to be an element out there who won’t pay rather than can’t pay when it comes to arrears and we as a council will leave no stone unturned to get this money.” stated the County manag-
er.
“We have 700 wage packets to pay each month a lot of which is pumped back into the local economy so it is vital we receive money which is owed to us” she continued. “We will be pursuing these arrears vigorously from this point on. In saying that we are sympathetic and ready to listen to people who are genuinely unable to pay. We have to feel that people are being fair to us if we are to be fair to them,” she concluded.

They came armed with just blankets and sleeping bags and their mission was simple. To secure tickets for teenage heart-throbs One Direction who will play two dates in Croke Park next May. Fans of the hugely successful boyband started queueing outside the News and Deli shop in Park St on Friday morning despite the

tickets not going on sale until 9am the following day. Claire and Laura Daly were amongst the many who camped out to make sure they got the precious tickets. “I’ve seen them three times already and I can’t wait to see them again” gushed Claire. Myself and my sister
are going to queue here overnight to make sure we get tickets for it. I don’t think I’d do this for any other band but One Direction are special. Niall and Harry are favourites,” she added. Everybody who queued for the tickets were spared sleeping on the pavement for the night as Sevens
taxi’s stepped in sending around a bus in which the avid fans slept overnight. When the tickets eventually were released to the public on Saturday morning it took just two hours to sell out two concerts. The speed in which the tickets were sold represents a new Irish record which highlights just how popular the boyband have become. Those hardy souls who queued outside the Shop and Deli were rewarded as they all managed to secure themselves tickets for the much anticipated concerts next May.

The Post Polio Karaoke night proved to be a big success
By Paul Byrne The Post Polio Support Group are celebrating 20 years supporting Polio survivors and the Dundalk branch helped mark the occasion with a Karaoke evening in the Fane Bar on Park Street. Brendan Moore the local volunteer rep for the Post Polio Support Group said a great night was had by
all and thanked all those who made the night possible. “On behalf of the members of the Post Polio support Group locally and nationally I’d like to thank the fundraising committee and the management and staff of the Fane Bar for what was a wonderful evening’s entertainment. “We decided to have
the night in recognition of the 20th anniversary celebrations for the Post Polio Support Group. We would also like to thank the local businesses in these tough economic times for their support and also to the general public who helped us celebrate on the night.” explained Brendan. The Post Polio Support Group is an organisation
set up by Polio Survivors to assist their fellow survivors, particularly in relation to the Late Effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome. The Group was formed in 1993 and is run by a voluntary Board of Polio Survivors and friends, and is supported by voluntary committees, other voluntary workers and a small executive staff at the of
opment in that time. Started in 1993, Louth County Enterprise Board has been at the forefront of enterprise development during this time. Thousands of people have participated in “Start Your Own Busi-
ness” courses during this time. Yet more young people have engaged in student enterprise programmes, teaching young people how to bring their innovative ideas to life and perhaps create an oc-
cupation for themselves into the future. However it is in the field of supporting local enterprise that Louth County Enterprise Board has had greatest success, according to CEO Ronan Dennedy.
DUNDALK Town councillor Conor Keelan, has called on the Government to implement the National Epilepsy Care programme in full and open two Epilepsy Monitoring Units which have been lying idle since last August having been built at a cost of almost €2m. The units, at Cork University Hospital (CUH) and Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, are crucial to understanding why people have epilepsy and how best it can be treated. “Epilepsy affects 40000 people in this country” explained Cllr
Keelan. 30% of those people have difficulties controlling their seizures while approximately 130 people die annually. “Last year the Government agreed a National Epilepsy Care Programme in which they proposed a €2m Epilepsy Monitoring Unit to be built. A four bed unit was built in Beaumont and a two bed unit in Cork. “However these units were completed last August and have been lying idle ever since. The reason for this is because the government say they cannot fund the staffing costs.” added the Newry Road councillor.
“Two years ago I received treatment in Beaumont for epilepsy and thankfully since then I’ve been able to control my seizures. It is extremely frustrating however for people who are unable to control their seizures as they have nowhere in this country to go for help. It is especially frustrating given that there are two units ready to open but
lying idle for almost a year” he concluded. The Epilepsy Monitoring Units are designed to monitor seizures in patients, with a view to making a definitive diagnosis of epilepsy, or deciding which candidates are suitable for surgery. Despite this sizeable investment in muchneeded and long overdue infrastructure, the units remain unopened today as a result of the HSE’s recruitment moratorium which prevents the hiring of five nursing personnel and two EEG technologists to provide a round-the-clock inpatient service.
been established whilst companies like Fitz Scientific, FlexiTech and Bryan Lynch Salads have created high quality, sustainable employ-

Dundalk show is not to be missed The 2013 County Louth Agricultural Show is moving into the final stages of preparation. This year, the show has moved to Bellurgan Park and once again a great attendance is expected on Sunday June 16. The mission statement of the Co. Louth Agricultural Show is “to be a shop window for what is produced locally, defining the process from farm to fork, highlighting agricultural practice and adherence to quality production”. The benefits provided by agricultural shows all across Ireland are manifold and have shown in the past to be platforms for launching new products, financial impact locally, stimulation to the food industry, preservation of traditions handed down through generations which otherwise could be lost forever and they also help to bridge the urban rural divide. Entries are now being sought for the 2013 Show. Many classes are held for Cattle, Sheep, Horses and Ponies, Alpacas, Dogs, Arts, Crafts, Horticulture, Home Industries, Photography, Baking and Flower Arranging. There are also classes for children and those with special needs. Winning a rosette at the show adds value to an exhibit and winning a cup is the icing on the cake for many. The highlight for many is the Parade of Interbreed
Champions in the Cattle section with the winner taking home the Quinn Cup and prize money sponsored by ABP Group. As always, qualifying events are a big part of the Co. Louth Agricultural Show which holds a number of qualifying events for All Ireland Finals at other shows. As usual, new and exciting events are sought to attract visitors. This year the Co. Louth Agricultural Show welcomes the Russian Cossacks who will hold two thrilling demonstrations of their activities. Two Sheep Dog Trial Demonstrations will be held with Gun Dog displays, Tug o War and the return of Unregistered Show Jumping which will give the Horse Section an enormous boost. Many other events will also be held to help keep the family entertained. The designated charity this year is SOSAD Ireland whom the show is pleased to support in what ever way possible. For application forms contact Dundalk Show Society Ltd at 0879594247. Alternatively, check out www.thedundalkshow.com or info@ thedundalkshow.com for further details or to download the schedule. Entries close on Monday June 10 at 4pm. Home Industry exhibits must be brought to Bellurgan Park on Saturday June 15 between 9am and Noon for judging.

A group of local dancers enjoyed a very successful weekend when they travelled to Killarney for the All-Ireland Hip Hop Dance competition. The hard work put in by the group, who are members of the Dynamic Dance and Stage School, scooped 25 trophies and a plaque in what was their very first competition. Among the hoard of 25 trophies, is the award for the group’s youngest participant, seven year old Hailie Heaney who won for a solo dance. Amy Woods of the dance school was delighted with the success. “Some of the kids wanted to hold on to the trophies, they were so happy and proud of them. Some of the trophies, which in some cases are as tall as their winners, we buckled into the seats beside them,” said Amy. Amy Woods spoke of her pride in all those who took part but also of her gratitude for those who made it happen. Sarah does Louth proud in Rose final
Dundalk Leader 6th June 2013
By Paul Byrne
LOUTH Rose Sarah McCrave has failed in her bid to reach the Rose of Tralee finals but has pledged to proudly represent the Wee County for the remainder of her term. Sarah, from Willow Grove in Dundalk was one of 61 contestants at the selection event in Portlaoise last weekend. “There were just 23 of the contestants got through to the finals,
with only six of the 29 Irish girls making it so obviously the competition was very tough.” explained Sarah. “I had an absolutely brilliant weekend down in Portlaoise and I am so glad I got a chance to go down there and represent Louth. The whole weekend was just such a fantastic experience,” enthused Sarah. “We were treated like celebrities getting Garda escorts all around town and people pack-

ing the streets waving to us. It was surreal but really enjoyable at the same time” “I wasn’t too disappointed when my name wasn’t called as I wasn’t really expecting to get through. I was the youngest Rose down there and they don’t tend to send anybody under 20 through. The youngest Rose that went through last weekend was 23 I think”, added Sarah. She is now looking
forward to be the Louth Rose for the next year, and will also be invited along with all the other Roses to the international festival in Tralee in August.’ Sarah, a student in DKIT, says she hopes to represent the county with pride at various events around the country and revealed she is going to Belarus in February to help out at an orphanage as part of her year as Rose. “I enjoyed myself in Portlaoise so much and made so many new friends down there. The Roses were fantastic and Daithi was so friendly. But now I am looking forward to what will be a very busy year as Rose. I have been asked to volunteer for a trip to Belarus where I will be helping out at an orphanage in February. It’s something I am really looking forward to experiencing and I am sure it will be a real eye opener.” added Sarah.

County Louth retain all Blue Flags By Niamh Kirk
Louth has retained all of its Blue Flag awards after tougher new EU Water quality standards saw 13 beaches around Ireland lose the award. Nine of the beaches stripped of the award were along the east coast but Tem-
pletown, Port and Clogherhead beaches have all kept their status. In line with the World Health Organisation standards new criteria are now being used to identify potential risks to bathers and public health. They test the levels of bacteria in the water and now only the bathing water
with the highest quality will be awarded a Blue Flag. However, it is not just the water quality that gains an area a coveted Blue Fag. It also looks to beaches which achieve high standards across a wide range of other criteria including environmental education, management of the environment, safety and
other services. At the award ceremony held in Dublin last week the Coast Care Volunteer groups were commended for the work they put in to keep these public amenities clean for everyone. Larry Magnier from Blackrock was given the Individual of the Year Award
for 2012. Larry is a member of the Blackrock Tidy Town Committee. “The people are fantastic and they are going out there doing this for everyone’s benefit. Larry stood out as a driving force for the coast clean up,” said Michelle O‘Sullivan from Coast Care Ireland.

to have parents on hand with skills and advice on how to maximise this lovely zone and make it a place the children want to use and keep tidy and we wish to thank the staff for allowing a team to get handy with paint and bring new ideas to fruition,” said a member
of the Faughart NS Parents Association. The opening of the library coincided with the school sports day which saw the students make the most of the good weather running in the different heats or relaxing after competing with a book in hand.

I’d have to say the Jaffa Cake. The chocolate and the orange is a great combination. You can’t really go wrong with the jaffa cake.
I’m a Jaffa Cake fan. They’re the king of biscuits. They can’t be beaten.
I think we’d have to go for a Chocolate Kimberley. Lovely thick chocolate and marshmallow in the middle. They’re gorgeous.
I wouldn’t be a huge fan of biscuits but if I had to choose I’d probably go with something plain like a digestive biscuit or something like that.
I’m a big Rich Tea fan. They are the perfect biscuit to go along with a cup of tea. They are especially great for dunking.

Resident’s warning over house break-ins By Paul Byrne
A St Nicholas Avenue resident has called on people of Dundalk to be extra vigilant following a break in at her house early Friday morning. Breda Mooney’s house was broken into in the early hours of Friday morning with the thieves getting away with a substantial amount of money as well as taking a playsta-
tion and games from her son’s games room. “My son Wayne has cerebal palsy and he is really shook up after the break in” explained Breda. They took his playstation and a number of games as well as a sum of money from my purse which was in the kitchen. The games were all limited edition cd’s so it will be hard to replace them unfortunately.
“They got in through the bathroom window sometime early on Friday morning. My husband got up at 5:15 and noticed my purse on the floor in the kitchen and he came in and asked me if there had been money in it. I told him there had been and we knew at that stage we’d been robbed.” explained Breda. “They obviously know what they’re at
as they didn’t leave a single fingerprint in the house. “This is the fourth house on my street to be burgled over the past month and I’d urge people to be extra vigilant. “There are a lot of old people living on their own and they would be particularly vulnerable so hopefully their neighbours can look out for them in the evenings.” added Breda.
Local group visit Peace Park
A Louth group recently visited the Island of Ireland Peace Park near Ypres in Flanders, Belgium. The park is a memorial to the sacrifices of the soldiers of the island of Ireland who died, were wounded or are missing as a result of their involvement in World War I. The group that travelled were all graduates of the very successful Leading the Way peace building training course which ran in a number of locations across the county in 2012 and 2013
Changes to electoral system in store By Niamh Kirk
There have been minor changes to the redrawing of the local electoral boundary maps in Co Louth following the release of the Boundary report last week. The report recommended no changes to the Dundalk, Carlingford and Dundalk South electoral areas. However despite the minor changes to the physical boundaries, there will be some significant changes to next year’s local elections. There will be no voting for Dundalk Town Councillors which will be abolished under Government plans to merge the functions with the County Council. In line with current Government policy, Dundalk Town Council will be abolished. The
report has recommended that a ‘municipal district’ be formed from the two Dundalk electoral areas which will be responsible for immediate decisions in the specified area. Louth County Council will see more members join the ranks as it will now have 29 Councillors in total, each will represent a population of 4,070 to 4,648 depending on the electoral area. The level of representation per population is within the recommended level for Co Louth which is within the range of 3,814 to 4,662 per councillor The Dundalk Carlingford area which has a population of about 24,500 will elect one additional member to the Louth Council next year as the number of seats goes from five to six. Those liv-
ing in the Dundalk South electoral area will also be voting for an extra member as the number of members in this electoral area goes from six to seven. Ardee votes will also have an extra seat to vote a councillor into as their representation goes from five to six. By shifting the boundary the electoral divisions of Dysart and Clogher, formerly in Drogheda East, will move to the new Ardee electoral area. Drogheda East and West will be merged into one electoral area electing 10 members to the council with no additions to the number of councillors that can be voted in. Nationally 114 councils will be reduced to 31 in the biggest shake up of the local electoral system in 30 years.

DkIT Business Ethics students raise 10k for charity
Dzień Dziecka to wyjątkowa chwila w roku. Planujemy im kolejne dni , miesiace, a nawet lata. Poprzez nasze dzieci chcemy zrealizować swoje niespelnione marzenia. Otoczmy je miłóscią i opieką. Sprawmy aby ten dzień nasze córki i synowie wspominali jeszcze długo. Niech to będzie święto rodzinne. Simul Polonia ma przyjemnośc zaprosić wszystkie dzieci z rodzicami na Piknik Familijny. Odbędzie się on w sobotę 1 VI w godzinach 12.00 - 16.00 w Helen’s Park. Zapewniamy wiele atrakcji dla uczestników w każdym wieku.Gwarantujemy dobra zabawę i wspaniałą atmosferę. Przynieście ze sobą uśmiech, dobry humor i pogodę ducha , a zabawa na pewno będzie na 102. Ewa Toporek.
The students of Business Ethics put their studies to good use when they raised an impressive €10,000 in the past semester. Collaborating with the ABACUS school for children with autism in Drogheda and the Boyne 10k, the students worked to raise funds for a new playground for the children when they move into their new school. A
second, special donation, of €1000 was made by the students to the Lourdes hospital on behalf of the McArdle family. The Business Ethics students learned a great deal about organising and marketing events and delegating roles and responsibilities with guidance from their lecturers. The Business Ethics students were led
by the following team leaders who between co-ordinated over 200 students: Antoinette McGovern, Nicola Cooney, Carly Faulkner, Chad Conroy, Jessica O’Connor Moneley, James King, Ross McGrath, Paddy Coleman, Steven O’Leary, Shepherd Munyaradzi, Ruben Krapf, Shane Carolan and James Gogarty.
Pictured are Sam O’Carroll and Evan O’Connor, both pupils at Abacas School, their Principal Michelle McHugh, Aslam Jalalli, and some of the Business Ethics students.

NOVENA TO St. Martha
O St. Martha, I resort to you and to your petition and faith. I offer up to you this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour that you enjoyed when Our Savior lodged in your house. I beseech you to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask you St. Martha to overcome the dragon which you cast at your feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary's and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended no matter how difficult. Y.M.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
Behold me kneeling at your feet Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. You know why I make this Novena. I come exhausted with fatigue to show you the crushing weights of my trials. You are powerful O Mary and can come to my assistance. (Here mention your request). I feel confident by the thoughts you can help. I have reason to expect any favour from a Mother who is at once so powerful in the name of the love which you ever had for your divine son. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Queen of peace, pray for us. This Novena will grant you any request. Publish prayer immediately. Also thanksgiving to the Sacred Heart. Thanks to the Sacred Heart for favours. P.S.

Frankie puts energy into new film By Niamh Kirk
Film maker Frankie Fenton, from Ardee, has embarked on an ambitious project to get his documentary on the feasibility of a long forgotten energy source, Thorium reactors, into the final phases of production. Along with his co producer Des Kelleher, Fenton is aiming to generate €40k worth of donations in order to get the film completed and see it enter the greater debate. And they have only 30 days to meet their target. Fenton and Kelleher are hoping to push the debate around Thorium
Frankie Fenton.
into the mainstream with their in depth documentary. Thorium Reactors were developed in the 70s but dismissed in favour of uranium, but many energy experts are resurrecting the technology. After studying for a MA in Film, Frankie,
went to London where he worked with post production company in Soho. But eager to get on with his own projects, he returned to Dublin and set up his own production company, Sector 7G, basing operations between the two cities. Coming from a background in social sciences Frankie had to get his head around the finer details of nuclear physics. “At the start, every conversation I began went over my head”, he said. “But it is interesting, people are passionate about it, and if I can get it, then people are going to get it too.” They started making
‘The Good Reactor’ two and a half years ago, travelling throughout the UK, US and Europe interviewing industry experts, Thorium supporters and sceptics. “It all started with a conversation with a friend,” said Frankie.” I was looking for a documentary subject and I was just taken by it.” They took a closer look and soon had a response from top Thorium expert Kirk Sorenson. “He was going to be in London for a conference. We met him, and a lot of people who were interested in the subject. It all kicked off from there,” said Frankie.
Jonesboro Charity Cycle The fifth annual Jonesboro Charity Cycle was launched in The Gap Of The North public house. This event has raised over £86,000 for charities especially those for children with special needs. This year the committee expect to smash through the £100,000 barrier. This will be acheived through the generous support of our sponsors and the people that take a sponsor card and cycle or walk. This year the main benefactors are Rehabcare Dundalk, Newry Gateway, Autism NI south down group, Helping hand charity for Belfast hospital for sick children, and NI children’s cancer fund. The event takes place on Sunday July 7 at Noon starting as usual at the cycle lane at Dromad. Contact Martin 028 30849426 or John 028 30848326.
