A WELL-known local referee is recovering in hospital after being injured in a freak accident during a GAA match. Malachy Craven, an experienced official on the club scene, was rushed to hospital last Tuesday evening after a freak accident where he collided with one of the players. Malachy was refereeing a Division 4B game between Sean O’Mahony’s and Glen Emmets at the Point Rd in Dundalk when the accident occurred. The second half was just five minutes old when a Glen Emmets player crashed into the referee after he had stumbled over a Sean O’Mahony’s player. Plans for recycling facility go to Bord Pleanala By Niamh Kirk
Plans to develop a dry waste recycling facility on the Coe’s Road have gone to an Bord Pleanala following appeals from the local residential and business community. Approval for the waste facility run by Ec-
ological Waste Management include areas for material deposits and dry materials, storage for tyre bales, a weigh bridge, a truck wash, a fuel storage unit and offices. It requires the partial demolition of storage building to be reused for dry materi-
als. The project was Initially approved by Dundalk Town Council, with a number of restrictions. However, the opposition continued and approval has been again appealed by residents and businesses in the area who have a number
of concerns about the impact of the development. An Bord Pleanala has reqeusted al documents pertaining to the planning application for review. People living in residential estates, many in the Mountain Court estate and local businesses have submitted objections to the project. Among the main concerns is the potential of fire when storing dry material so close to homes, one objection
referred to fires that had occurred in the county in areas that had stored tyre bales. Some spoke of the impact that the truck washing facility would have on their day to day quality of life. The water and washing chemicals that could be carried in the air into the nearby Mountain Court estate was also a worry for some. Objections showed that many residents fear the impact of the fumes,
dust, water and chemical vapour making them feel that they may not be in a position to even open windows to get air into their homes if the facility goes ahead. Businsses as well as residents also pointed to the problems that increased traffic would have, and also the problems caused by limited access that large lorries would have turning onto the junctions on the Point Road, Inner Relief Road and Coe’s Road.

After first coming up with the idea three years ago, Senator Jim D’Arcy, described it as a “dream come true” to witness the renaming of the bridge across the Boyne on the M1 motorway as the Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge. “I first raised this issue in the Senate in November 2011, shortly after the former President finished her term, having spoken to the Taoiseach and a number of others. I was very encouraged by the support the idea received and wrote to all members of both Louth and Meath county councils seeking their support.
Jim D’Arcy attended the ceremony with Mary and Martin McAleese
“I am delighted that both councils brought in and passed motions supporting the proposal. “I believe the name adopted; the Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge, is most suitable. It acknowledges the enormous contribution made by the former President and her work on building bridges between divided peoples
and communities on the island of Ireland. It also takes into account the historic significance of the Boyne Valley area. The official ceremony took place on Saturday in Oldbridge, Co Meath and was attended by Mrs McAleese, her husband Martin, and Taoiseach Enda Kenny, along with councillors from Louth and Meath.

Home Support Workers Protest
Home support workers and home care attendants joined forces on Friday afternoon as they staged a protest march from Market Square to the HSE offices in Market St. The protest is part of the SIPTU ‘Time To Care’ campaign which is calling for a restoration of hours cut from Home Support Services and proper contracts of employment. According to SIPTU, Home Support Services to the elderly and disabled were reduced by 500,000 hours at the beginning of 2012. Last September, the Health Service Executive (HSE) removed a further 200,000 hours from service provision. SIPTU is also seeking proper contracts of employment for those working in the sector. SIPTU’s assistant industrial organiser at the trade union, John McCamley, said the workers and their clients, deserve to
be respected. “We are here today to raise awareness and fight for decent wages for our home help and home support workers. We are fighting for more hours and more respect from the HSE” he explained. “The job that the home workers and care attendants do is absolutely vital. The HSE has picked on this group because they think that they are isolated and don’t have a strong voice but we are here today to show that we are strong and we will not be bullied” he added. Home Support workers deliver direct personal care to clients, which ensure that those that avail of the service are safe and secure in their own homes. The services provided include the preparation of meals, providing assistance with showering, toileting and dressing along with vital domestic duties. Roughly 100 protesters joined the march to Market St where a petition with over 15000 signatures was handed in to the HSE offices calling on the government to reverse cuts to services.

The results of the CreateLouth Young Music Awards for 2013 have been announced, with young musicians throughout the county being recognised for their efforts. Each year, young musicians are encouraged to audition before an external adjudicator, with the successful receiving bursaries to assist them in their studies. The adjudicator was Gráinne Hope who was very impressed with the high standard of the applicants in classical, traditional and contemporary music. She noted the importance of these awards nationally, with many former winners playing and leading sections in major orchestras and ensembles, as well as pursuing solo careers. She also wished the Louth Music Education partnership every success in their ongoing work in developing an integrated music education
service, accessible to all. The recipients of the Awards for 2013 are as follows: The Macardle Award for Classical Music - Poppy Van Dijk, Blackrock– Cello. Create Louth Young Music Awards - Conal Duffy, Mullagharlin Road – Uilleann Pipes; Fionnuala Donlon, Greenwood Drive – Harp; Rebecca McGeeWatters, St. Clement’s Park – Flute; Niamh Taaffe, Avenue Road – Fiddle; Hillary McCahill, Point Road – Fiddle. Schools Musical Instrument Purchase Scheme - Colaiste Rís – Music Teacher - Sinead Quinn. The Dundalk recipients were presented with their Awards at a special ceremony at the Town Hall this week. Cllr Jennifer Green, Cathaoirleach, Dundalk Town Council, was delighted with the council’s support for the
young musicians. – “Dundalk Town Council has a long tradition of supporting young musicians in the town, and this support continues with these awards. Music is so important within our community, for both young and old, a fact which was reinforced at St. Oliver’s during Bealtaine when I attended an uplifting concert celebrating creativity in older people. “Also, the council’s ongoing engagement and support for Music Generation Louth will make learning an instrument a more realistic option for young people throughout the county. “I congratulate all these young musicians for their talent and dedication, and thank the Arts Service for all their efforts in supporting music in our community”, added Cllr Green.

One card covers all six libraries Bookworms in the county are in for a treat after DkIT Library and Louth County Libraries teamed up to provide their members with a comprehensive service. The collaboration - 1 Card 6 Libraries - is the first such service in Ireland. Since its launch in Autumn 2012 both libraries have seen their membership and footfall increase. This is an innovative project enabling borrowers of Louth County Libraries to avail of the services of DkIT Li-
brary and vice versa. In order to use and borrow from the libraries you must indicate to the library of which you are a member that you want to avail of this service. Within a week you will be able to borrow from other libraries using your library membership card/ID. The scheme offers library members access to a large and varied collection of books, along with borrowing rights, PC/WiFi access and study/reading spaces. This collaboration
has enabled the libraries to work together in other areas, including the Dundalk Book Festival. The project is potentially of interest to those who would like to avail of the services which an academic library provides, or for DkIT students who want to use your local public branch library. For more details ask at your local lending library as you will have to opt in to use the service. Different rules and restrictions apply in different libraries.
Anyone who was rocking out in the early 90’s will remember one of Ireland’s major contributions to the grunge era Therapy? Now the Mercury award nominated trio are coming to Dundalk this October the Spirit Store announced on Monday. Their story began in 1989 when three young Stooges, Killing Joke, Motorhead and Detroit techno fans decided to get in on the act. They were soon championed by BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, which landed them a record deal in 1991. But it wasn’t until 1994 when they reached their commercial peak with the gritty punk-metal album ‘Troublegum’. It hit the UK top 5, and had five successful singles, Since then the band have continued writing, recording and touring, and fans are certain to be happy with the new material. After a summer of touring with an acoustic show as well as hitting some of Europe’s biggest festival, Therapy? will play in the Spirit Store this October 28, with tickets going on sale soon.

Family’s thanks for support Enjoying the Tain Festival From Page 1 As a result of ticket sales, sponsorship and many generous donations a total of €6,400 was raised which was recently presented to of North East Cancer Research & Education Trust, and Specialist Palliative Care Service Louth. One of the highlights of the night was a special performance by Raymond and Anne’s sons, after just three weeks of tuition. It was a very successful and emotional night for Raymond, and sons Sean, Conor and Aaron. Raymond explained the reasons behind organising the event. “I lost my beautiful wife to breast cancer November 2, 2012. I was
finding it tough (and still do) until a relation of mine gave me three months membership to the Ballymac leisure complex which got me out of the house and meeting people. “It was around the end of March when I met up with renowned fiddle player Gerry O’Connor. We spoke and he offered to “do something”. Gerry’s mother taught me fiddle years ago and Gerry took on with teaching my eldest two boys fiddle and tin whistle. “Within four weeks I had arranged “A night in memory of my wife Anne McCabe in Dowdallshill GAA complex. A total of 300 tickets were sold and more funds were raised through a raffle. I had over
40 spot prizes, including some from Anne’s place of work, Heinz “, explained Raymond. “I just want to acknowledge the fact that I was overwhelmed by the response on the night. It was a very successful night for the charities and more importantly the Dowdallshill community as a whole. Artists who performed night included Stewart Agnew, Gerry, Sile & Finnian O’Connor, Glaisin, Francie Duffy, Tadhg Cunningham, John Conlon and Friends. “I’m afraid to start thanking people for fear to miss somebody but I am very grateful to everyone who helped in any way”, added Raymond.

ather’s Day is a day of commemoration and celebration of Dad. It is a day to not only honour your father, but all men who have acted as a father figure in your life whether as stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, or “big brothers”. There is no excuse for not spoiling your Dad on Sunday June 16 so make your plans early to come up with a list of treats to say ‘thank you’ and show that you care. There is no point in putting things on the long finger – start with breakfast in bed and continue spoiling your Dad throughout the day. Here are some ideas for making it the perfect day for him. Help dad to enjoy the day. Perhaps you’ll let him sleep in this
morning, or perhaps you won’t badger him to be somewhere on time, for a change. Make it a family event. Father’s Day is by nature a family event. Use this opportunity to get everyone in the family together
for a fun day. Think about including all the dads in your family, not just your own father. Consider building the celebration around an activity you all can enjoy, such as: Having a family picnic; Enjoy-
ing a family barbecue; Taking dad to a favorite sporting event. Celebrate your shared experiences. Look at old photos of you and your dad doing fun things together. Take a walk down memory lane by creating either
a photo album or a photo slideshow. You may be surprised at how many things you both have forgotten about and how much they mean to you. Especially if he doesn’t talk much about his life, consider

least one half of the financial and emotional well-being of the family. A thoughtful card, a letter, or short speech that expresses your love will benefit both you and your dad. Giving dad a heartfelt speech, toast, or card of genuine, loving words
at the dinner table, or at some other point when all the family are around (siblings especially), will make this a poignant occasion Make the day joyful. The most important aspect of the day is that you are present and attentive. It does not take material
presents to make a dad happy—it takes showing your love, and reassuring your dad that you’re proud of him and all he’s done for you. For many fathers, the most rewarding part of being a father is feeling that your children love you, and the knowledge that each child is on a path to a successful future, no matter what age, coping well with the problems that life inevitably throws at us all. End his “Fun-filled day” by telling your father you love him. Don’t forget his hug and kiss.

LAST weekend’s Táin festival proved to be a great hit with the Dundalk public as large crowds flocked to the Market Square to take part in the weekend proceedings. It all kicked off on Friday with the Táin march as the spectacular scene of hundreds of people dressed up as Louth legends started their march from Ardee eventually arriving
delighted with how well the festival went and was especially pleased with the level of participation from the public. “We were absolutely delighted with how the weekend went and especially with the highlevels of participation from the community.” enthused Sinead. “It was great to see so many join in the Táin march and bring the local legends to life. You got a real sense of community as the people of Dun-
in Dundalk the following day at Market square. On Sunday, country music singing sensation Nathan Carter took to the stage for the Táin open air concert as the brilliant weekend sunshine helped make it a day to remember for the onlooking revellers. The day also featured a number of other bands on the impressive line-up. Sinead Roche from the Dundalk Tourist Office was
dalk wanted to be a part of the spectacle. “I suppose that was what we were trying to do. Get the people to participate as well as spectate. “It just went really well from the wonderful weather to the great acts on stage on Sunday. “We’re already thinking ahead to next year’s festival and we have no doubt we can make it just as successful as this year”, added Sinead.
Packed programme at agri show The finishing touches are being put to the grounds of Bellurgan Park for the 2013 Co. Louth Agricultural. Sunday June 16 will be a very busy and exciting day as exhibitors enter the grounds in the hope of winning a much cherished rosette and maybe some prize money as well. There is a packed programme of events for all and many classes being held for Cattle, Sheep, Horses and Ponies, Alpacas, Dogs, Arts, Crafts, Horticulture, Home Industries, Photography, Baking and Flower Arranging. There are also classes for children and those with special needs. The highlight for many is the Parade of Interbreed Champions in the Cattle section with the winner taking home the Quinn Cup and prize money sponsored by ABP Group.
The Co. Louth Agricultural Show also holds a number of qualifying events for All Ireland Finals at other shows. Major attractions at this year’s show include Russian Cossacks, Sheep Dog Trial Demonstrations, Gun Dog displays, Tug o War, Unregistered Show Jumping, Side Saddle competition with Open and Novice Classes, Sheep Shearing, Sheaf Tossing with a special prize for the “best tosser” and vintage machinery and cars also feature. The “Big Top Marquee” features a number of local bands such as “The Wagtails, Backpages, Up The Left, Booze Brothers and The Dundalk Brass Band”. This year great support has been received from Louth LEADER and
the designated charity this year is SOSAD Ireland. For those attending the show, take Exit 18 off the M1 motorway and take the R173 Greenore/Carlingford Road. Entry to the Bellurgan Park showground is by one gate only on the L3085 (Deerpark Road, first left after the Ballymascanlon Hotel) to Ravensdale while the main entry to Bellurgan Park from the R173 is reserved for emergency purposes only. Home Industry exhibits must be brought to Bellurgan Park on Saturday June 15 between 9am and Noon for judging and the judged exhibits will be on display on show day. Sunday judging will begin around 9.30am and will continue into the afternoon.
Pokazy taneczne i gimnastyczne – super młodzież nam rośnie! Do zobaczenia następnym razem W imieniu Simul Polonia – Agnieszka Boniewicz

Packed audience at new school information night
Co. Louth VEC held their Information Night on Pobalcholáiste Chú Chulainn, in Wellington Hall on St. Mary’s Road in Dundalk and it proved to be a tremendous success. The local education authority said that the level of interest among parents and prospective students displayed on the night surpassed all of their expectations. CEO of Co. Louth VEC, Dr. Pádraig Kirk, said, “we predicted a good level of interest in the new school, but the crowd and level of engagement on the night was

busy main roads as far as is possible, starting in Belfast on Saturday 29 June and after a great night in Dublin, participants have the option of finishing off or riding back North to complete the event in Belfast on Sunday 30 June. Two major acts set for Spirit Store
Clare Mathews and Brian Duffy enjoying the sunshine at the Tain Festival on Sunday afternoon.
Kevin McAleer will be in high spirits at his stand –up show in Dundalk this weekend. The comedian from Tyrone has “been talking nonsense for thirty years with little sign of stopping.” However his shows are more meticulously constructed than you might think, with scripts carefully polished to have audiences rolling in the aisles. He has appeared on a number of RTE shows over the years including Nighthawks and the Our Friends in the North series.
But his live show has always been of paramount importance and whether it is a Rag Week show or a Royal Albert Hall performance he gives a master class in comic timing. Kevin McAleer stands-up in the Spirit Store this Sunday June 16. Meanwhile, fresh from filming their first TV show for Channel 4 and poised to become an international sensation on the comedy circuit, The Rubberbandits are coming to town. The bag -faced duo are set to play
the Spirit Store this June 28. The acclaimed comedians Blindboy Boatclub (Dave Chambers) and Mr Chrome (Bob McGlynn) beat acts such as The Script and Villagers in the enterianment.ie awards when they got the gong for Best Irish Act and got an IFTA for their self titled TV show. They have appeared on RTE, MTV and Channel 4 as well as some of the biggest stages in comedy and music at events like the Electric Picnic and Oxygen as well as sell-
ing out 12 nights at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they were credited with the Most Original Act distinction. Recently they have been working with Declan Lowary from Father Ted, on their Channel 4 debut series, and are due to play at a number of the summer festivals in Ireland and the UK.

The group have been together a little over eight months but none the less have clocked up a number of important performances in the likes of Fibbers, Dublin and already impressed over the weekend at the Market Square stage in Dundalk. Despite the ongoing successes, the group are only going into record a debut EP at the end of the month. Having spent much of the previous eight months writing and gigging whenever possible, they feel they are ready and they expect it to be out not long after. novena NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never know to fail). N.G.
CUTHBERT 24th/4th Anniversary
novena
In loving memory of dear Ellen (Nee McDonnell) and Neville who went to Heaven on the 13th of June and 29th June 1989 & 2009 Late of Pearse Park, Dromiskin and Brambly, England. (Aged 67 & 86 years). “Free At Last” From your son Eric The Bungalows, Pearse Park.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
Behold me kneeling at your feet Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. You know why I make this Novena. I come exhausted with fatigue to show you the crushing weights of my trials. You are powerful O Mary and can come to my assistance. (Here mention your request). I feel confident by the thoughts you can help. I have reason to expect any favour from a Mother who is at once so powerful in the name of the love which you ever had for your divine son. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Queen of peace, pray for us. This Novena will grant you any request. Publish prayer immediately. Also thanksgiving to the Sacred Heart. Thanks to the Sacred Heart for favours. m.m.

The new Skoda Octavia vRS goes on sale July 2013 and is set to be the fastest vRS to date, more power and better fuel economy. The vRS is available as either a saloon or estate. There is a choice of two engines either a 2.0-litre petrol 220 PS or a 2.0-litre diesel 184 PS. The 2.0 TSI-petrol when mated to the six-speed manual gearbox, will take the Octavia vRS from 0 to 100kph(62mph) in 6.8 seconds and then on to a top speed of 248kph(154mph). The diesel vRS 2.0 TDI-diesel will do 0 to 100kph in 8.1 seconds with a top speed of 232kph(144mph) with the six-speed manual gearbox. You can opt for six-speed DSG dual clutch transmission which is available for either engine. The vRS is equipped with sport suspension as standard; it is lowered by 12mm over the standard saloon and 13 mm over the estate model. It now features an Electronic differential lock XDS integrated into the electronic stability control (ESC) to improve traction and curb understeer. As standard the vRS runs on Dorado’ 17” light alloys fitted with 225/45 tyres with the choice of 18” ‘Gemini’ and ‘Pictoris’ alloys (each for 225/40
tyres). There is even a colour choice with the ‘Gemini’: silver and anthracite. If you prefer you can opt for the ‘Xtrem’ 19” light alloys in black. The foot print of the new vRS has increased in length by (+88 mm, estate +86 mm) and width by (+45 mm). The wheelbase has been lengthened to 102 mm which has shortened the overhang. There is more internal room with the boot now able to accommodate 590 litres and 610 litres for the estate, plus the rear headroom has increased and there is more legroom. The vRS stands out from the standard Octavia range with front grille featuring the vRS badge; there are distinctive honeycomb air intakes, a bespoke vRS-style front bumper with fog lights. Bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights are standard. At the rear there are two trapezoidal-shaped chrome exhaust tailpipes, LED rear lights and a rear spoiler. The interior features vRS front
seats with a leather steering wheel, gear stick and handbrake with stainless steel sill plates and pedals There is an array of ‘Simply Clever’ features, such as the foldable cargo items as well as the double-sided boot flooring, an ice scraper in the fuel cap and there is a high-visibility jacket under the driver’s seat. There are also litter containers, multimedia holders and a number of storage compartments, holders and hooks fitted as standard in the new Octavia vRS. The new Octavia estate vRS has an optional adjustable boot floor. The jacket shelf under the boot cover is new in the estate vRS. The roller cover for the boot can be removed and stowed under the adjustable loading floor. You can opt for Adaptive Cruise Assistant, which keeps a set distance from the car ahead. The new Intelligent Light Assistant automatically switches the long-beam lights on and off. The Automatic Parking Assistant supports you getting in and out of tight spaces. The road sign detection in the ‘Traveller Assistant’ package indicates traffic signals. You can select KESSY KeylessEntry-Start-and-Exit-System, an electric panoramic sunroof
