Teenage Pitch & Putt star Brendan Lawlor is an All Ireland Champion after winning the 2013 Gents Intermediate Strokeplay title in Rocklodge Co. Cork last weekend. Last year 16 year old Brendan claimed the Adult Leinster Intermediate Strokeplay title as a 15 year old and he has followed that up by winning the national title. Brendan gave a masterclass in Cork as he followed up a rather average first round with a sensational second round to win the title with a comfortable four shot margin. The Louth Village teenager honed his considerable skills at the Channonrock Pitch & Putt course where he has been playing since he turned six

years old. He admits he was feeling quietly confident heading to Cork having played well in qualifying for the finals. “I was head qualifier in Co. Louth so I knew I was playing well and I thought I was in with a chance. You play two rounds of 18 holes in the AllIreland and I had a pretty average first round scoring 53 which left me a few shots behind the leaders.” explained Brendan. “I came out for the second round feeling a bit less confident but I had a great start and scored five 2s in a row which sent me shooting up the leaderboard. I felt great at that stage and I was hitting the ball beautifully. Continued on page 9

Residents want help in order to deal with litter problem By Paul Byrne

The fastest and most economical way to get to the heart of Dublin

RESIDENTS from Defenders Row in Dundalk’s town centre have urged the council to try and help them stop people dumping in an area beside their houses. The dumping has been going on for over two years and according to residents Ciaran McBride and Brian McCaul the situation has now reached epidemic proportions. “This has been an ongoing problem for over two years now and we are sick to the back teeth of it at this stage” explained Ciaran. “Basically there is an open yard with a fence across it between the houses on Defenders Row and people are using it as a dumping ground. The land is now being over-run by rats who have been attracted to the area because of the rubbish. We have tried time and time again to clear up the mess and

Dumping at Defenders Row is causing concern

to keep the area clean but we’re banging our heads against the wall at this stage and we need some help. “We are paying our household charge and we expect help in keeping the area clean. Even if the council could install a CCTV camera it would help in alleviating the problem.” added Ciaran. Brian McCaul who also lives on Defenders Row says that rubbish bags have been thrown over the wall into his 92 year-old-mother’s garen. “My mother is an elderly women and the last thing she needs are bags of rubbish being thrown into her garden with rats

coming in not far behind”, said Brian. “We have litter wardens from the council coming down here for two years now yet there is nothing being done to help us. We have no problem putting in the work to help keep our area clean but we just need a bit of help from our town council” he concluded. Mary Capliss who works in Environment and Infrastructure in Dundalk Town Council stated that “The site in question is not in the ownership of the Local Authority and It would be inappropriate that Dundalk Town Council comment on ongoing investigations.”

Fireman injured

Gardaí are investigating an incident last week on the Armagh road where a fireman was injured. The local fire service had closed off sections of the Armagh Road following a car fire last week. But one driver refused to use an alternative route, mounted the verge, and drove straight through the scene where Fire services were trying to work. The incident took place last

Wednesday night. As well as driving through signs and cones the driver narrowly missed a fire fighter who tried to dive out of the way, injuring himself. He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda but was released on Thursday morning. The fire fighter suffered a sprained knee and is expected to be out of work for a number of weeks.

Gathering of Soraghan Clan from across the globe They came from far and wide to meet up in Gibbstown as over 200 Soraghans gathered for the mother of all reunions last weekend. From just six days young to 92 years old there were Soraghans that spanned many generations enjoying the glorious sunshine whilst catching up on long lost relatives as well as cousins, aunts and uncles that had never been met before. Lucy Soraghan Smyth travelled all the way

from New York to be in Dundalk for the ‘Gathering’ and she says it was a journey she was delighted to have made. “We had such a great time and it was wonderful to see so many Soraghans in one place. There were relatives I had never met before and it was great meeting them all for the first time. We held it in my father’s home-place in Gibbstown and we were blessed with glorious sunshine for the whole day”, explained Lucy.

“There were Soraghans from all over Ireland, Connecticut, Philadelphia, Scotland, Canada and myself and my daughter travelled from New York. Lucy Soraghan’s shop in Park Street would have been well known back in the day by a lot of people so we re-enacted the shop for the day in the garden and sold sweets and hampers and all sorts of goodies. We managed to raise €850 for SOSAD on the day which was great.” added Lucy.

Lucy Soraghan Smyth pictured with her mother, Jean, at the family gathering

Anne Thompson and Emma Soraghan handed over that cheque to SOSAD on Monday and they too were delighted with how the day went. “Myself and Emma

were just talking at the kitchen table a while ago and we were saying that it would be lovely to organise some sort of family get together and try and get some people

Hot shots get ready for Cic Saor event The Corona Golden Boot Trophy as well as the not too insignificant matter of €5000 are up for grabs this September as the Corona Cic Saor Championship returns after last year’s inaugural competition. This year’s competition will be held in Oriel Park as 100 competitors compete for a cash prize of €5000 and as the competition is open to all you too can test your skills

against the best in the All Ireland Cic Saor Championship. The event is being organised in aid of the Dundalk Young Ireland’s Club and according to event organiser Adrian O’Donoghue the event will give a unique opportunity for people all around the country to rub shoulders with some of the best footballers in the country. “Bryan Sheehan,

Jamie Clarke, Oisin McConville, Joe Sheridan, Dessie Dolan, Dean Rock, Paddy Keenan and last year’s winner Brian White are just a few of the GAA stars who have already registered and we are getting people from all around the country entering every day so it should be very competitive this year”, explained Adrian. “This competition is not a distance test. It is

purely an accuracy test and this year we are allowing kicking tees to help competitors. The whole idea of this is to help raise money for the Dundalk Young Irelanders club. They are the oldest club in the country and it would be great if people come along and support what will be a fantastic day out ” added Adrian. The Cic Saor competition will run from 10am

until 4:30pm and will take place in Oriel Park on Saturday September 14. Entry to watch the event costs €6 or £5. Anybody who is interested in taking part in the competition will pay €110 to enter the prestigious competition. The number of entrants is capped at 100 so anybody who is interested should to get their names in. home for it” explains Anne. “With it being the year of the Gathering we decided to go for it and it all culminated in a wonderful day in Gibbstown

last weekend. From start to finish it was fantastic and we didn’t finish up until well into the wee hours”, she laughed.

Hopes of jobs boost From page 1 Cellulac is an Irish company based in Galway and was set up by Gerry Brandon. It has strong ‘green’ credentials and is at the forefront of sustainable bio medical development. It makes bio chemicals for the medical industry, one of its most innovative products is lactic acid which is derived from straw. Cellulac got funding of €2.8million to make the product commercially

viable last year and it is thought that this is the product that the Dundalk plant would manufacture. The company’s founder, Mr Brandon, however told reporters that it was too early to confirm and that there were other options on the table. While Cellulac did not confirm the investment, media coverage of the potential investment was posted on the company’s website.

Over to you QUESTION: Are the school summer holidays too long?

Eilish McSherry

I think they’re just about right. I have enough time to go to the Gaeltacht and then spend a few weeks relaxing with friends and family.

I think they’re perfect for secondary schools especially for the years that are doing exams but I’d say primary schools could do with being cut a bit as there isn’t as much pressure on them.

I think that they’re perfect. I’m back at the end of August and the holidays have flown by so far. It’s nice to have a couple of months off especially if you’re going on a holiday somewhere.

I think they need to be extended. We need more time to have fun. I think that we should maybe get another month off to hang out with friends and enjoy ourselves.

I think they’re a bit short. I’ve been working during my school holidays and it’s been a good experience. It would be nice to go back to school a bit later.

Bed push to help Fix Crumlin appeal By Paul Byrne

LAST year Bellurgan man Oliver O’Shaughnessy decided to raise money for the ‘Fix Crumlin’ hospital appeal after seeing at first hand the pressurised conditions in which the staff were forced to work. His son Daniel suffers from a disease called severe aplastic anaemia which means his bonemarrow is unable to produce red and white blood cells. As a regular visitor to Crumlin, Oliver was moved to try and help the hospital raise some

much-needed funds to rebuild the crumbling building. In August he made a bed with the words ‘Fix Crumlin’ emblazoned on the front and set out from Fitzpatrick’s pub in Lordship as he made his way across the Cooley Mountains into Carlingford. Hundreds supported Ollie in his fundraising efforts with the O’Shaughnessy family’s efforts culminating in a cheque for €8,754 cheque being made to the hospital.. Ollie has decided to dust down his old bed and will be pushing it across the Cooley Mountains

once again this Sunday August 4. The walk will start at Fitzpatrick’s on Sunday at 12:45pm and Ollie says everybody is welcome to join him on the day. “Our seven year old boy Daniel is an outpatient in Crumlin and the staff up there have been absolutely fantastic. With the money raised last year the hospital have already renovated their cardiac unit and opened a new care facility but there is still more work to be done and hopefully we can raise a few euro this weekend to help them out. This year we are doing the bed

push for cystic fibrosis as well as Crumlin Children’s hospital”, explained Ollie. “We will be meeting outside Fitzpatrick’s at 12:45pm on Sunday and start out from there crossing the Cooley Mountains with our bed. It’ll probably take the guts of three hours but people are welcome to walk as far as they want. There is a courtesy bus organised to take everyone back to Fitzpatrick’s for entertainment and craic in the bar afterwards and there will also be a raffle in the bar for everybody who donated and I would

like to thank everybody who has donated prizes for the evening”, added Oliver. Anyone who wishes to participate in this Bed Push and walk over the mountain is more than welcome. All support is greatly appreciated and Oliver hopes to see some friendly faces to support this worthy charity, and enjoy the day’s events. Anybody who would like to donate to Oliver can contact him at 0876217363. Further details can be found on the ‘Frances Gribben Cancer Trust’ Facebook page.

Good win for Eve McCrystal Dundalk Leader 31st July 2013

Dundalk’s Eve McCrystal took her first open road race win of the season in Dunboyne last weekend. The race was a part of the National Women’s League. Eve let the race settle naturally on the first lap and used the second lap to make her race winning move. On the long hill she attacked, going clear with former National Road Race Champion Geraldine Gill and Ciara Kinch. The three rode together to build up a

solid lead on the main bunch, which had grown to 90 seconds by the end of the 60kms. In the sprint for the finish Eve knew Gill would be the lady to watch and held her wheel coming towards the line. With 200ms to go Eve kicked and overtook Gill for her maiden win. This result bodes well for the Garda, ahead of the upcoming Rás na mBan the five-stage, four-day international

women’s cycling race held in Clare. Eve will be hoping to be selected as part of the Leinster team. On the same day Eve’s brother Bryan took 7th in the men’s race, having placed second the day before, having been narrowly pipped for the win by Tim O`Regan. Bryan’s next outing will be the international Suir Vally 3 Day held over the Bank Holiday weekend in Carrick-on-Suir.

More illegal dumping After a surge of IBC’s containing the bi product from diesel washing being dumped around north Louth, a further four incidents were reported in just one week. Five IBC’s containing toxic diesel sludge was dumped at Kilcurry on Thursday July 26. The dump, while not large scale, continues to be a draw on the resources of the County Council and ultimately the Irish ex-

chequer. Louth Co Council say that the environmental challenge that each of these illegal dumping causes remains and must be tackled. Thankfully spillage for recent incidents has been at a minimum but the risk remains of serious environmental should there be a significant leak from any of the IBCs IBC’s were found in three separate sites around

Dundalk on one day last week. The contractors for Louth County Council removed them from Lower Faughart, Upper Faughart, and on the Racecourse Road Dundalk. Louth County Council would encourage members of the public to report any information they might have in respect of any of the unauthorised dumping.

Dundalk Sub Aqua Club’s open day is a big hit By Niamh Kirk

The members of Dundalk’s Sub Aqua Club spend a lot of time under the waves; but on Sunday they stayed on top of the water and gave people a rare view of Greenore and the Cooley coast. The club held an open day along the beach at Greenore, and after getting kitted out with lifejackets, visitors were ferried out to the Haulbowline lighthouse, and even as far as the sunken SS Connemara. Those who took to the waters were shown the tside of the lighthouse sthat looks out across the Irish Sea, and got ma closer look at Blockhouse Island, which at r one time was quarantine for sailors suffering from fevers. They were

also treated to stunning views of Carlingford Lough, Greencastle, Greenore and the spectacular coast of the Cooley Peninsula. There was also delight as passengers, particularly for younger visitors, who saw some young seal pups both in and out of the water as the boats passed the community of seals on a rockery. It was not just the rare view of the area that Sub Aqua offered, but also a reminder of the area’s most historic marine events. Later in the evening one of the boat drivers sailed a little past the lighthouse and explained that the boat was above the sunken wreckage of one of the worst marine events. On November 3, 1916, in perilous weather, two ships collided at

the entrance to Carlingford Lough, a coal ship, The Retriever and the steam liner, the SS Connemara. Ninety Seven lives were lost that night. There was only one survivor between the two ships, a non swimming fireman called James Boyle. The remains of the SS Connemara and Retriever lie at the bottom of Carlingford Lough. The Connemara was a huge steam ship and even today, in a low tide, you can see its boilers just below the surface of the water. On shore the members of Sub Aqua provided entertainment for young children and a barbeque all for free. Sub Aqua is very often in the lime light because of their efforts in helping those who have

suffered tragedies at sea. This weekend however they wanted people to be able to approach them on a light note. “We just wanted to show people the boats and the gear and that they are well maintained. And just to give people an introduction to what we do,” said Mr Buckley Dundalk Sub Aqua’s PRO. He estimates that more than 200 people took a boat ride to the lighthouse. The group begin training sessions this October and would like anyone interested in getting involved in what they do to get in touch. Dundalk BIDS is now back in business after ‘technical’ error Dundalk BIDS, the body responsible for the development of businesses in the town was itself struck off the companies’ register last May it was revealed last week. However, according to director, Paddy Malone, the company has since submitted all the nec-

essary files that saw it struck off in the first place, and were penalised in the form of a significantly reduced fine. The issue is expected to be fully cleared-up in the coming days. It was a ‘technical’ error according to Paddy Malone one of the company’s directors. “The oversight that saw BIDS Dundalk be-

ing dissolved with the Company Registration Office (CRO) had been resolved earlier this month. When the circumstances were explained the CRO significantly reduced the fees in recognition that this was a technical matter only,” he said. A company search shows that the last accounts filed by Dundalk

BIDS were for the year ending April 2010. Since then, the company’s existence was put to a vote, and in December 2011the rate payers of Dundalk chose to continue to pay 1.5% higher rates in order to continue the company. A meeting of Dundalk Town Council is taking place in August 6 where it will be discussed.

St Vincent girls head to Romania By Paul Byrne

Four kindhearted St Vincent’s students have decided to put their summer holidays to good use as they fly to Romania next week to work with underprivileged children in Romania. Zoe Nevin, Aoife Clarke, Síomha Murphy and Marie Christina McManus will fly to Romania on the August 5 to help out the Blackrock based Crosscause charity which has been helping out orphans and poor children in Romania since 2003. The girls are all members of the local Red Cross and wanted to do something worthwhile for their summer holidays before they start their final year in St Vincent’s in September. After scanning the internet for ideas they stumbled upon Conor Hughes Crosscause charity page which seemed to tick all the right boxes for the girls. “We got in touch with Conor and called around to his shop in Blackrock to talk about going out to Romania to help out with the Crosscause charity. We sat down

with him and he told us what the charity was about and what they do and we decided that we would love to go over and help out”, explained Aoife. “We are going to run a summer camp for the 16 permanent residents in Casa Bridget as well as the 40 or so local kids who call around for food, a shower and schooling each day. “We’ll have arts and crafts classes which we will be running over there for the nine days and we will be helping around the place as well.

We’ve been told that the local playground is in need of a bit of work so hopefully we can get that back going again”, added Aoife. The four girls have been fundraising for their trip since May and thanks to the generosity of local businesses as well as a well-attended quiz in McGeough’s they have achieved their target for their Romanian adventure. Conor Hughes who is one of the original founders of the Crosscause charity said he was delighted that the

girls were making the trip to Romania adding that he was confident that they would get as much out of the trip as what they put in. “Anybody who has made the trip over to Romania has generally fallen in love with the place and I’m sure the girls will have a great experience over there. We have had students from St Vincent’s help out in Casa Briget before and it’s an association that has tended to work really well over the years.” explained Conor.

Michael helps Ireland to silver medal By Paul Byrne

Michael Conroy from Tullygee in Knockbridge was on the Irish team that took Silver along with local man Terry Kelly from Dundalk (who was the team manager) at last weekend’s World Youth Fly Fishing Championships. The championship is run every year in various destinations all over the World by FIPS Mouche (International Sport Fly Fishing Federation) the world regulating body for competitive fishing. This year it was jointly hosted by the Ulster and Leinster councils of TAFI and run on a cross border basis. Dundalk hosted the opening

parade through its streets followed by the official Opening Ceremony in the Town Hall on Sunday July 21 with the Carrickdale Hotel in Ravensdale as the Championship headquarters. Hillsborough Castle in County Down hosted the official closing ceremony on Friday July 26. Teams travelled here from Canada, USA, South Africa, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Poland, and Scotland and competed against Ireland as the host country. Each team consisted of six anglers (age limit from 14 to 18) plus their manager and captain. They were fly fishing for Brown and Rainbow Trout and official practice was held on Monday July 22 followed by

three days of competitive fishing. Venues were spread over the five counties of Louth, Monaghan, Antrim, Meath, and Tyrone. The local club the Dundalk and District Brown Trout Anglers hosted one of the venues on the River Fane and consisted of 10 marked beats. One angler from each team fished a beat and was accompanied by a controller from the club who marked a scorecard. After three days of competitive fishing Team USA came out on top winning gold. Ireland took silver with Team South Africa taking bronze. This is the first time that Ireland has got into the medals since the Championship began in 1998.

AS part of their pre season training session, The Leinster Rugby Team have announced that they will be in Open Training Session in Dundalk Rugby Club this Thursday August 22. Ireland internationals Robert and David Kearney, originally form Cooley, will be back on the pitch where they threw their first passes in the sport. Tidy Towns group take action AFTER seeing Dunleer fall from Gold Medal to Silver Medal standard in last year’s Tidy Towns competition, local volunteers recently discussed this problem and how it should be tackled as they are determined to get to the top of the Litter League this year.

The first thing was to form litter patrols which has now been organised each day seven days a week. With litter collection organised a number of times during each business day they felt they needed to go further. The co-operation of the public is also called for toin dealing

with the litter problem. This has led to the formation of the Dunleer Litter League, a scheme where businesses will be asked to enrol with the scheme and nominate someone to inspect outside the premises each hour of the business day and collect any litter or cigarette butts.

The SEAT Leon ST Estate is the third member of the new Leon range, which comprises five-door hatchback, three-door SC and now the five-door ST estate. It will be launched at the Frankfurt Motorshow in September. Prices have yet to be confirmed. The engine line-up will be the same as the five-door hatchback, ranging from a petrol 1.2-litre unit through to an 184PS 2.0-litre TDI diesel. All models will feature Start/Stop and Energy Recovery technology. Although at 1,233 kg the ST is 45kg heavier than the hatchback, the 150 PS 2.0-litre TDI engine is capable of 4.1L/100km (68.9 mpg) on the official combined cycle. SEAT Leon ST Estate can carry between 587 litres with the rear seats up and 1,470 litres with them down – the rear seats lower remotely

from the rear door. The passenger-seat backrest can be folded over to accommodate especially long items. Technology will include optional LED Headlights, Adaptive Chassis Control and Adaptive Cruise Con-

trol – including the ability to adjust the suspension settings to match the driver’s preferences. Safety equipment includes the option of Multi-Collision Brake, Tiredness Recognition and Lane Assist.
