Annagassan Viking Festival
By Paul Byrne
Manchester Utd have always had a strong connection with Ireland with some of this country’s finest players representing the club with distinction over the years. However since John O’Shea’s departure in 2011 there has been no Irish first team involvement for the first time in many years. 15 year old Blackrock schoolboy Jimmy Dunne is on a mission to change that having been signed by the English Premiership Champions three weeks ago. He will sign a four-year deal with the English champions when he turns 16 on October 19, but will move to Manchester next week as he continues his schooling in England. Jimmy, a central defender

The annual Annagassan Viking festival which took place over the weekend was a resounding success according to organisers and visitors alike. The festival opened in spectacular fashion on Friday night when a Viking Longship, which had been hand crafted by Hugh McMahon and Tommy Mulroy, was paraded through the village to the shore flanked by Viking carrying torches. It was taken to the shore where more than 2,500 people came to watch it set alight by Viking archers with flaming arrows in the grand opening ceremony. Continued on Page 10

since I was about 10. I’ve been over to Manchester a few times over the last few years and I’ve been training regularly up in Belfast where Manchester Utd have a youth academy.” explains the talented youngster. There were a few Premier League teams looking to sign Jimmy but having been hugely impressed with Manchester Utd’s training facilities in Carrington the Rock Celtic central defender knew that Manchester Utd was the club for him. “Manchester Utd training facilities are really good and I can’t wait to get started over there” enthuses Jimmy. Celtic would have been my favourite team growing up but I’ve been following Manchester Utd since I was ten and it’s a dream come true to be able to sign for them. “I start school over there on the 2nd of September so I’m trav-

elling to Manchester next week to get everything sorted. I’m looking forward to getting settled in and meeting up with the youth team and getting to play some games. Apparently there are a couple of Irish players already involved in the youth set up so It’ll be nice to get talking to them and hopefully they can help me
settle in.” added Jimmy. Jimmy started life as a midfielder but because of his height he was moved into central defence and over the past year he has captained Dundalk schoolboys in the prestigious Milk Cup competition in Northern Ireland as well as being picked for the Dublin and District Schoolboys League (DDSL) representative team. His father Eamonn Dunne is a former Louth senior gaelic footballer who currently teaches in the Patrician HS in Carrickmacross while his mother Sharon Treacy-Dunne is the director of the Cross Border Orchestra Ireland. Not since a young Stephen Staunton made his debut for the great Liverpool side of the 80’s has a Dundalk footballer made the jump from youth team to the senior team in England’s top league. However Jimmy Dunne is determined that his name will soon be added to that list.

Leaving Cert results come out today Months of anxiety and excitement for hundreds of local students comes to an end this Wednesday August 14 as the Leaving Certificate results are in. The results for more than 1,700 second level students in Co Louth will be delivered to the schools on Wednesday morning, and will be available online from 12 that afternoon. This can be a very stressful time for young people who are faced with making big decisions about their future. But Dundalk Youth Centre’s Kevin Moran reminds students that they will be available to talk to anyone who needs advice on Wednesday and afterwards.
“We do have a youth information service where people can come and speak to someone who can help talk through their options,” he said. A helpline has also been set up for students by the National Parents Council post-Primary and the CAO which is staffed by experts that can help too. The freephone helpline number is 1800 265 165 and will run for three days Wednesday – Friday. The first round CAO results are due out on Monday August 19, and the helpline will be open for three days following the release of the CAO offers. The team at the Dundalk Leader would like to wish everyone the best.

Dunleer in Bloom Awards Night The gauntlet has been thrown down to gardeners in Mid Louth after Dunleer Tidy Towns announced that they are now resurrecting the Dunleer Garden competition after 20 years. It was decided that the Tidy Towns progress was such that it was important to spread the interest outside the main shopping area and it was decided to recognise householders who keep a nice garden which is visible from the public road. There will be two categories of garden one for large gardens and one for small gardens. The judges will be going at weekends to judge the competition which will now become an annual event. There will be six nominations in each category with the winners being announced on the presentation night in Grove House at a formal presentation in late October 2013. There will be a prize for first, second

estates and shop front during their annual Tidy Towns awards for the County. The local businesses concerned will have a formal presentation made to them on the Dunleer Awards Night. The Tidy Towns committee are working hard all summer
with the Work Scheme members to keep Dunleer Litter Free and ask for the co-operation of the public so that we again can rise to Gold Medal status in the Litter League in 2013. Many thanks are due to the businesses who have supported the Tidy Towns financially
and through prizes in events being run by the Committee. Also thanks were expressed to all the enthusiastic individuals who contributed to Dunleer in Bloom this summer. The next fundraising event will be a table quiz which will be held in early October.

Sad goodbye for SuperQuinn stores Dundalk Leader 14th August 2013

It opened its doors in Dundalk in 1960 as ‘Quinn’s Supermarket’, the first in the town centre, and expanded into one of Ireland’s most popular supermarkets. But last week the country said goodbye to Su-
perquinn for good, as the stores new owners, Musgrave, announced they were to drop the brand. From its beginnings on Clanbrassill Street, the company soon moved its headquarters up to Dublin. At its peak
it had 17 shops around Ireland and employed more than 4,000 people. In 1999 it made a welcome return to its hometown when it opened in the Carroll Village Shopping Centre where it employed more than 200

ing Superquinn fresh foods became a mainstay on Irish dinner tables. In particular Superquinn sausages which began trending on twitter immediately after the announcement. Supervalu assured customers who were worried over their breakfast bangers that they would be continued, under the brand name, and with stores in Ardee and Castleblayney, Superquinn still has a place in its hometown.

Thomas D’Arcy McGee murder re-trial The normally peaceful surroundings of the picturesque town of Carlingford were interrupted last week as pickets were held outside the unused courthouse over the weekend. The pickets came about thanks to a community’s split over the upcoming retrial of Thomas Darcy Mc Gees murder – which took place 145 years ago! The citizens of Carlingford finally secured a retrial of Thomas Darcy Magee’s murderer James Whelan at a special sitting in Carlingford Courthouse scheduled for Tuesday 20th August. This follows a 45 year old campaign to have Mc Gees murder trial revised and finally investigate doubts about whether the convicted Irishman, James Patrick Whelan was actually guilty of the crime. Whelan always maintained his innocence and questions are still raised about whether he was used as a’ patsy’ to quell the outcry expressed at the time of Mc Gee’s killing. Thomas D’Arcy Mc Gee’s funeral procession in Montreal drew an estimated crowd of 80,000

(out of a total city population of 105,000). One of Carlingford’s beloved sons, Mc Gee, an Irish Nationalist, Catholic spokesman, journalist, and a father of The Canadian Confederation, was gunned down on the steps of the Canadian Parliament in 1868. Following the hundredth anniversary gathering of his death in 1968, a movement began to finally and decisively find out who slayed Irish born Mc Gee. Remarkably, in February this year, the Ontario Court of Appeal scheduled a retrial of the murderer James Patrick Whelan to take place in Ot-
tawa on the 20th August at 2.30pm by proxy. Although this unprecedented decision was welcomed by Mc Gee enthusiasts, the original aim was always to get an Irish hearing for its native son. An agreement for an Irish trial was reached when the group sourced historical legislation and claimed international rights for Mc Gee to have the case heard in his own native home, The group also engineered to have the courthouse in Carlingford opened specially for the case. Justice Michael J Moldaver, a supreme judge in the Court of Appeal for Ontario
is expected to attend the hearing but will not reside. Judge Modaver while in practice, specialised in criminal law and is said to have personal interest in the Mc Gee case. The Canadian Ambassador to Ireland Mr. Loyola Hearn will also be in attendance. The astonishing events have rekindled some of the controversy and outrage over Whelan’s conviction and subsequent execution. Questions about his guilt continue to be voiced, as his trial was supposedly “marred” by political interference, dubious legal procedures, allegations of bribing witnesses, easily discredited testimony. Teenagers take part in worldwide scavenger hunt for charity By Aine Kenny
Teenagers take part in worldwide scavenger hunt for charity. Eight teenagers from Dundalk are taking part in Gishwhes, the greatest international scavenger hunt the world has ever seen. Gishwhes started on Sunday August 11, at 9pm and the hunt goes on for a week. Gishwhes is organised by the actor Misha Collins, who plays Castiel on the American TV show Supernatural. Maggie Cumiskey, a Gishwhes participant from Knockbridge, feels that it is a great way to make new friends. “There were only eight people doing Gishwhes with me, and obviously that wasn’t enough,” she said. “ “When something like that
happens, you are joined to another group that was too small to be a team also. For instance, my team was joined with six people from Colorado and another girl from Arkansas which are both states in the USA. Our team then made up 15 people,” she explained. “My friends and I have been communicating with our team members in the US via email and we’ll work on the list together. I think it is even better that we have an international team because some items on the list are easier to do in America,” added Maggie. The object of Gishwhes is to break records and perform random acts of kindness. This year, the local participants are trying to break the world record for largest online photo album of
people hugging. A list of items is posted on the website and the teams have to complete as many of these items as possible. One of the items on this year’s list is to recreate a recognizable piece of architecture or a landmark using books. The participants then have to post either a picture or a video proving they have done the item onto the website. The team is then given points for the item, and the more creative they have been, the more points they get. The team with the most points at the end of the week wins. The grand prize is a three day all-expenses paid for trip to Vancouver, Canada. The winners will get to go on a seaplane to an island and meet Misha Collins. All profits go to Random Acts, charity.

Chamber wants Government to help retailers Introducing Dundalk Chamber have once weeks. Paddy Malone, Dundalk’s dalk’s retail sector include: Reagain called for action with regards to kick-starting Dundalk’s retail sector woes. In the chamber’s bi-monthly newsletter, chairman Paddy Matthews welcomed the positive attitude and the great attendance at the public meeting with Bobby Kerr held in the museum on July 8. “We firmly believe that the time for action is now. We were encouraged with the attendance of the public meeting last month with Bobby Kerr and it was clear that the retailers in this town need help. This message was reinforced with the announcement of yet more shop closures in past
Louth Economic Forum, representative has raised the issue with Padraic White, Chair of the Forum and has asked that the retail sector be addresses,” explained Mr Matthews. This is one of the largest employment sectors in Dundalk. The Chamber is to carry out a survey to identify training and other needs for example on-line marketing. Once identified training will be offered to retailers at a very low rate. Social Media, promotions and customer service are just some of the topics to be included. Some of the ideas put forward by the Chamber to improve Dun-
duced or no parking at school opening and closing time; Rates reduction for town centres in certain cases; Work with Town Council to promote a mix of uses in town centres. The Chamber also repeated their call to the Government to seriously consider a reduction in VAT which they say can only have a positive impact on any border town. They are also working with Dundalk Tidy Towns in helping to make Dundalk an attractive place to shop and visit and have circulated an online survey on litter and how we can alleviate the problem.

Nicola’s run for cancer care Bullseye for Louth Youth Darts
Stabannon will be the the venue for the inaugural ‘Nicola Barry Run for Cancer Care’. The run will take place this October 6 with the organisers naming the race after the inspiring story of Stabannon Ladies goalkeeper, Nicola Barry. This time last year 24-year-old Nicola was recovering at home having just had an operation to remove a massive tumour from her brain. The Stabannon Ladies football goalkeeper had 95% of the tumour removed by surgeons and a year later she has thankfully well on the road to recovery. Nicola’s Stabannon ladies football team won the Louth Ladies Senior Football Championships last September and there were emotional scenes after the final whistle as the team ran over to the sideline to share their success with Nicola who had inspired them to victory. Michelle McArdle who was part of that winning team says that Nicola had inspired the team to victory as she was recovering from her operation. “Nicola is our goal-

keeper and had been a big part of our success over the years and it was fantastic to be able to celebrate with her after the final whistle last September. A group of us decided that we would like to do something to help some cancer charities and it ended up with us having the idea for the ‘Nicola Barry Run for Cancer Care’. Every man woman and child are invited to take part and there is something for everybody as there will be a 10K run as well

as a 5K fun run/walk,” explained Michelle. Nicola will herself be taking part in the run and she says she is looking forward to giving something back to the people who helped her recover from her life threatening tumour. “We are still working out who the funds raised will go to but they will all be cancer charities and St Lukes will definitely be one of them. They were fantastic to me all during the last year or so and they are really unsung heroes who are brilliant at what they do,” explains Nicola. Nicola was in Spain last year when she first began to suffer from headaches and blurry vision. She initially put her symptoms down to the heat but as the headaches worsened she began to get worried that something else may be to blame. “I was actually on a flight back to Ireland last July when my head started to throb really badly. I was in so much pain I had to lie down on the plane. I went to the doctor at home and they initially said that I was suffering from a
migraine. “The pains in my head continued and it was at that stage that my parents insisted I go into the hospital to get checked out. A CT scan showed that I had a pretty big tumour behind my front right lobe which was a huge shock to both myself and my parents. I was brought into surgery on the 19th of July and they removed 95% of the tumour,” added Nicola. Nicola gets monitored every twelve weeks and in June she received some good news as doctors told her that the tumour had not grown back since the operation. Nicola is now back in the Stabannon ladies set up and is helping to coach the team and she hopes to get back playing over the next couple of months. The ‘Nicola Barry Run for Cancer Care’ will take place on Sunday October 6th in Stabannon at 2:30pm and costs €20 for the 10K, €10 for the 5K and €30 for a family ticket. All are invited to attend and support cancer care. For further information contact Teresa Hanratty at 0874173301.
Local darts player Hamilton Archer is taking on a legend of the sport, Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ Baxter this Thursday August 15 to help raise funds for the Louth Youth Darts team. Hamilton from Fatima Park, started playing darts when he was 12, at home competing against family. After taking a break from the sport, he returned to the game three years ago and joined the North End Martlets. Re-starting darts however is not like riding a bike and Hamilton
says some oiling of the joints and fine tuning of his skills was needed. “You need to practice, I thought , ‘one month Il be back on form.’ It is not as easy as that,” he said. However, last week Hamilton qualified for the Louth Darts Team after a series of tests around the county and is preparing for next week’s match. The Louth team is comprised of 24 players, with 12 on the first team. It includes Jim McQullian , finalist in the News of the World, Championships in the 70’s, and players who
have previously represented Ireland such as Danny Maguire, Steve McDonald, Owen Caffery, Carl Thomas and Mick McGowan. Hamilton and others from the Dundalk Team are facing-off against ‘The Rocket’ to help raise funds for the Louth Youth Darts Team. Ronnie’s is an Irish Masters Champion, and winner of a number of European open’s, which are only some of the titles that he has. Hamilton explained that often people are introduced to Darts in pub, but this can ex-

Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill to play in Dundalk Gaol News An enthralling combination of fiddle and guitar is set to win over audiences at the Oriel Centre Dundalk Gaol on Wednesday August 20 The County Clare maestro Martin Hayes is regarded as the most influential fiddle-players of his generation and one of the the most important Irish musicians to emerge on the scene the last 50 years. His playing defies ordinary descriptions and together with his musical partner, guitarist Dennis Cahill they have achieved the delicate balance of tra-
dition versus creativity and innovation, carefully paying respect to the roots of the music whilst creating an engaging new sound. Their live concerts are famous for absorbing the listener and a timewarp unaware of how long or short the tunes are played for, sets that run the gauntlet of highs and lows of mesmerizing intensity, leaving audiences stunned but emotionally fulfilled. The concert takes place innthe Oriel Centre Dundalk Gaol. On Wednesday August 21 at 8pm.

Annagassan Viking Festival
Luke Torres from the festivals organising committee said that the opening event was fantastic, and the overall the weekend was a huge success with numbers up on last year and a wider variety of events. The ceremonial burning was only the first few steps into the Ireland’s past as the festivals hosted a number of events that brought Viking Culture back to life. The festival is now in its fifth year and has grown and developed since its inception in 2008. It boasts history re-enactments, Viking battles and weapons displays with the Magnus Viking Group from Killyleagh in Co. Down who helped train some young budding Vikings. The Danish Frederickssund Viking re-enactment group also visited the festival and took. Visitors were treated to a working Viking village showcasing the crafts and skills that were used. The festival was officially opened by Mrs. Grete Ødegaard, Deputy Head of the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Tenor, Eugene Ginity provided entertainment over the weekend, as did local band, Caution, who kicked up a storm and DJ Bo who kept everyone in the spirit of things with a host of Celtic and Viking music. Viking activity has been recorded in the area since AD 842. The Linn Duachaill site was for more than 50 years a base for Viking raiders plundering Ireland’s inland villages and also for launching attacks on the British Isles. It was abandoned however for the more strategically beneficial port at Dublin and for centuries the location of the fort remained a mystery. But in 2010 archaeologists confirmed that the long lost location was in fact at Annagassan, Co Louth. The organising team however are not getting much a rest after the jam packed weekend, as they have therir first planning meeting for the 2014 Viking Festival this Wednesday August 14.

Pride for local lad Garry Hoey in Paddy Power Cup By Paul Byrne
Dundalk man Garry Hoey proudly represented his country last weekend as the Irish Amputee Football team finished in a very respectable third place in the very first amputee international soccer tournament to be held in Ireland. Back in 2009, while working in his job in Rice and Roddy, a car display ramp slipped and fell over, crushing Garry’s foot resulting in him being rushed to hospital where he remained for a month before a decision was made to have his right leg amputated from just below the knee joint. Garry started playing football with an amputee football team in Dublin and two years later he was playing in midfield for Ireland in the biggest amputee football event ever held in this country. Garry and his
teammates took their place in the Paddy Power Cup alongside England and the Netherlands in what was a very tough Group 2. Ireland kicked off their tournament in Limerick University on Saturday and had a difficult start to the tournament losing 6-0 to eventual winners England in their opening game. However, they bounced back brilliantly with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands to secure them a place in the semi finals against a very strong Polish side. Unfortunately Ireland lost 2-0 to Poland in front of their passionate home supporters. But once again the boys in Green bounced back from their defeat to secure third place by beating Germany 3-0 in the third place playoff. It was an experience to remember for Garry who was understandably immensely proud of his side’s third place finish.
“We trained really hard over the last few months and we were delighted and proud to have finished third ahead of such fantastic sides like the Netherlands and Germany,” explained Garry. “Our first game was against the English team and unfortunately we lost 6-0 to a very strong side that went on to win the tournament. "It was the toughest game I’ve ever played in football. Their movement, game play and skill level was way above anything I’ve ever faced before. “Next we played the Netherlands in a game we had to win and thankfully we put in a great performance to win 2-0. Unfortunately I came off injured during this game and this ruled me out of the rest of the tournament. “The boys played a great game in the semi’s against Poland but we

Dundalk-based Greenbean Coffee Roasters is celebrating after one of its coffee blends, the Savannah Royal, received a ‘Great Taste Award 2013.’ Located on Dundalk’s Coe’s Road, Greenbean Coffee Roasters has been producing gourmet coffee for more than 25 years. This is the first time the company has entered a coffee competition and everyone involved is delighted with the win. The Great Taste Awards are among the world’s largest and most rigorous food awards schemes, involving over 400 judges and thousands of hours of blind tasting. Pat Grant, Greenbean’s Master Roaster, is delighted with the award. “This is the first time we have ever
entered an award competition and it’s great to have done so well, first time out. The Great Taste awards are known and respected in Ireland and in Britain and we hope this win will help us in our drive to gain market share in Britain.” Greenbean is the only Irish coffee company we know of that roasts each bean separately before blending the roasted beans. Other coffee companies blend the raw beans first and then roast them all together. The Greenbean way takes longer but we know it’s well worth doing. You can taste the difference in the coffee,” he said.
Deadline for bridge funding As the deadline for securing funding for the Narrow Water Bridge Project draws closer, final efforts are underway to make up the shortfall in funding. Newry and Mourne District Council and Louth County Council have both charged their respective project management teams to develop a plan to secure a cocktail of funding to make up the difference and restart the project. “Meetings are currently being held with various funders in an attempt to secure the future development of the bridge,” said a representative from the Newry and Mourne District Council. In May this year SEUPB announced that it would offer €17, 369,210 to the project, with more than €3 million coming from the Northern Irish Department of Finance, and about €800k from the Irish Government.
The Project was put on hold on July 9 2013 when tenders received by the project managers in Louth County Council indicated that the project would cost much more than the budget allowed. They estimated that the cost of construction could run from anything between €26m to €40m. A statement from the local authorities in County Louth said “Louth County Council, along with our partners East Border Region and Newry and Mourne District Council are continuing to try and bridge the gap in funding and are considering every option open to them.” However SEUPB must know by August 20 if the shortfall in funding has been made-up or the project could face losing the EU grant and the project being shelved once more.
fell just short losing 2-0 to what were a very good side,” he noted. “In the third place playoff we beat Germany 3-0 to end what was a great tournament for us on a high. “Not being able to play those two final games was very disappointing but this is sport and I’m delighted to have been a part of what was a wonderful adventure. “I would like to thank family and friends that travelled to Limerick to support myself and the irish team. I am very proud of what we did as a team the tournament was a great success for

amputee football and I look forward to putting back on the irish jersey soon.” enthused a delighted Garry. We have been invited to the Amputee World Cup in Mexico next year so once this tournament is finished we’ll be focusing on fundraising to try and take part in that. Our sport is growing and is now played in over 30 countries around the world. Eventually we hope to given paralympic status. Hopefully this tournament will Garry Hoey Left with Irish teammates . encourage more players to get in touch with us Garry. will become an annual eventually result in the and join what is a very It is hoped that the event and in time, to see formation of a national enjoyable sport,” added Paddy Power games the sport develop and league.

Over to you Should local people support their local soccer team instead of English sides, or is there room for both?
Michael O’Connor I definitely think people have a duty to support their local team. It gives a lift to the whole town when the local side is doing well and is well supported.
Padraig Watters
Joe Gavin
Robbie Higgins
Stephen Broadhurst
I think they should follow their local team but generally people get dazzled by the big money leagues and the hype surrounding the bigger leagues. Unfortunately that’s just the way a lot of people think and I think the English Premiership will always be well supported in Ireland.
I agree it’s good to support your local teams but there is nothing like the atmosphere you get at a big high profile game like in the Premiership or a big league like that. Also the fact you can watch the bigger teams on the television regularly which you wouldn’t get with your local team.
I think that there is room for people to support both. It’s important to follow your local team but the bigger leagues are obviously played at a higher level so I can see why people like to follow teams in England etc.
I can understand why people don’t go up to Oriel when the team aren’t playing well but they have no excuse now seeing as they are flying high. It’s nice to support your local team I think.
Art Exhibition for museum
Two Dundalk artists are putting on an exhibition to show off their new paintings at the Dundalk County Museum tomorrow evening, Thursday August 15. Both artists hail from the well known Broughton Street in town and both are looking forward to what they hope will be a successful exhibition. The artists, Kevin Haughey and Michael Stafford are two painters who work in different styles but yet somehow compliment each other. The exhibition is called ‘Face and Headspace’ and will showcase both artists unique styles. Michael Stafford work is eclectic, it deals with the idea of space and internal space, moving from post modern painting to a type of spiritual surrealism painting. Sometimes revealing a type of isolation. Michael who has a BA of Fine Art from Sligo institute of Technology as well as a National Diploma in fine art from Dun Laoghaire Institute of art/ design / technology is looking forward to the exhibition and says everybody is invited down to the museum to check out both artists work. “Myself and Kevin have known each other for years and it’s great

Back in 2011, the Spirit Store’s venue on the quay was the location for many scenes in the award winning irish movie, Good Vibrations. So too were a number of the streets in Dundalk, whose red brick terraced houses were reminiscent of streets in Belfast in the 70’s. Some local people also got some screen time as extras in the film which went on to receive much acclaim and received a number of awards at film festivals since its release. Now the Spirit Store is giving people the opportunity to see the film and spot the Dundalk connections when they announced this week that it will be screened in their venue on September 6 with a very special added extra. The screening will be followed by a DJ set from the person the

biopic is about, Terri Hooley himself. During one of Ireland’s darkest periods, the Troubles of the 70’s, Terri Hooley had the vision, will and capability to overcome what seemed like impossible odds to open a record store and bring the punk communities in Belfast together. The store, Good Vibrations, developed into recording studio and so much more. Terri is played by Game of Thrones Actor Richard Dormer in the film which is charged with the same anarchic spirit as the music that inspired it. The screening and after party with a DJ set from Terri Hooley takes place on September 6, tickets are available from spiritstore.ie and McAteers Foodhouse.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never know to fail). A.D.

Blackrocking at the seaside By Niamh Kirk
The crowning of the Blackrock Seaside Festival Queen kick-started the annual festival on Friday night in the Fairways Hotel. The winner on the night and new Festival Queen was Aileen Thornton (24) from Haggardstown. She impressed judges with a witty poem and accompanying slide show that mentioned all the local characters and business. The show was hosted by Paudie Breen. All the participants were commended by the judges Shane Kelly, Abhaile HomeCare, Louth Rose, Sarah McCrave, Caroline McElroy from Maya. One of the festival organisers described it as a “great night all round.” The full line-up of events and acts for the Blackrock Seaside Festival, which takes place this weekend August 1718, has been announced . The jam packed programme has some fantastic and fun events, for the young and old alike. Bucket and spades at the ready for Saturday when a sand-castle building competition on

the beach will launch events for the weekend. Following the success of last year’s tug-of-war, teams will get a chance to prove their strength again on Saturday afternoon. Harrison’s Bar were last year’s champions but with a number of teams already signed up, it look like others have their eyes on the prize. Organisers say that teams should wear the same colours and have at least two females and a sub. Chefs will also be putting their skills to the test in a number of events such as Saturday
afternoon’s bake-off and a chilli con carne cookoff. However, things will be heating up considerably for some on Sunday at the chilli eating contest. Organisers will have a selection whole, fresh, hot, chilli peppers, the hottest they can get their hands on they promise. The challenge will be to eat as many as you can before giving up. And, if you can’t stand the heat perhaps taking on the cream cracker challenge, in which you must eat three, dry cream crackers in less than one minute might
appeal. Both promise to be as entertaining for spectators as the participants. Kids can come out to play too as there will be a fun fair in Blackrock car park and creative writing classes all weekend, as well as sports activities on Sunday afternoon. A craft market will talk place in the village each day as well as demonstrations on how to make jams and chutney as well as herbal ointments and balsams. And each night, the sun will set on spectacular nightly concerts on the beach.

137mm. There is a choice of two engines for the new Civic Tourer, the new diesel 1.6 i-DTEC which is well suited to the car, as we found out when we recently drove the hatchback and the petrol 1.8 i-VTEC engines in manual or automatic transmission. According to Honda the Civic Tourer has class leading boot space - the cargo area will
accommodate two full-size mountain bikes or three largesized Samsonite cases with the tonneau cover pulled over. The figures equate to 624 litres with the rear seats in place, up to the window line. And with both of the 60:40 split rear seats folded down (they fold flat) and filled to the roof you will be able to carry 1668 litres of luggage. To help with handling and comfort the Civic Tourer fea-
tures an Adaptive Damper System on the rear axle. The system has three settings - comfort, normal and dynamic - all of which have been developed to enhance stability and comfort under varying load and driving conditions. On sale early 2014, with order books open towards the end of the year with trims matching the current hatchback line-up.
