Dundalk’s three representatives at the Junior Kickboxing Championships in Krakow Poland arrived home on Sunday laden with silver and bronze with all three winning medals in their events. Eadaoin McCrave, Enda Kelly and Darren O’Donagh performed with great credit in their respective events with Eadaoin and Enda winning silver and Darren two bronze medals. Eleven-year-old Eadaoin’s silver came just 18 months after joining the Irish Martial Arts academy in Dundalk where she trains under coach Eamon Lawlor. Eadaoin, who attends St Fursey’s National School in Haggardstown, joined The Irish Martial Arts Academy in Williamsons Mall in 2012 and according to Eamon she immediately showed promise

“Eadaoin takes part in musical forms which is a sort of imaginary fight against one or more opponents in which the performer uses techniques coming from Oriental Martial

Arts to specifically chosen music. She is very flexible and she is very quick to learn which makes her a joy to teach”, he added. See Page 12

Mother and daughter make the cut for charity By Niamh Kirk

MOTHER and daughter Janet and Katie Malone from Kilkerley have made the cut when it comes to charity after teaming up to make a contribution that will be of great benefit to others. After months of preparation, Monday was D-Day for the pair as they donated their hair to the Rapunzel Foundation which makes real-hair-wigs for people suffering from the effects of treatment of cancer and alopecia needs. Janet wore her hair short, “a blade three all over” she said until she decided to grow her hair and then donate it to the Rapunzel Foundation. Some of Janet’s family and friends have been hit by cancer, Janet lost her mother to the disease only last year. In response she decided that she wanted to help

Janet and Katie Malone after having their hair cut

and began growing her hair. Janet was then joined by her daughter Katie who is ten and wanted to help too. Spurred on to make the cut by her friend Julie Byrne the date was set for Monday September 23. It was Katie who took the plunge first and said goodbye to 12 inches of her hair on Monday afternoon in Chaplin Hair Salon, followed

after the incident on August 27, 2012, but the car remained at the scene. He added that it was unfortunate that a prosecution came as a result but he accepted it. The damage to the wall has been repaired.

quickly by Julie. Joanne Byrne and grandson Fintan Clifford, as well as Janet’s husband and Katie’s dad, Ronan Malone and Nuala Malone were on-hand to support the mother and daughter as they made the final cut. To donate to the charity, hair is grown so it can make a pony tail of more than 12 inches, the hair must be

untreated and preferably even in length. It takes as many as 25 pony tails to make a wig and The Rapunzel Foundation is always appealing for pony tails to be sent in to them. Nuala in Chaplin’s treated the ladies to a new ‘do’ when the pony-tails were cut. The Rapunzel Foundation revealed that the impact of a real hair wig is huge.

Young students celebrate another great harvest THE young organic gardeners at Dulargy National School have enjoyed a bumper harvest since their return this September. After one of the best summers in years, all the school crops did extremely well with a fantastic harvest of carrots, peas, onions and garlic in particular. Almost all the crops have been harvested and shared out in the last few weeks, with plenty for

everybody to bring home for dinner. The Gardening Project in the school is now in its fourth year and going from strength to strength. Co-ordinated by parents Roisin Cotter, Terri McKeown and Eileen McGeown, the project gives each child in the school the opportunity to sow seeds and care for their plants until they are ready to be brought home. Each class grows flowers or vegetables or both.

This year Junior Infants grew sunflowers, Senior Infants grew tomatoes, 1st class grew courgettes, 2nd class grew peas and sweetcorn, 3rd class grew heritage potatoes and turnips, 4th class grew rocket, lettuce, radishes and coriander. FIfth class conducted an experiment growing five varieties of carrots, ending up with a bumper crop of over 200 carrots. SIxth class grew red lettuce, scallions, onions, garlic and beetroot.

This school has almost completed its new Outdoor Classroom, another wonderful addition to the school resources, masterfully built by school caretaker, Jimmy Quigley. This will be planted up by the children in the coming months and will include a sensory garden and a pollinators paradise for birds, bees, butterflies etc. to bring in as much wildlife as possible to help pollinate all the school crops.

Local man warned not to get involved in matters that do not concern him A MAN who intervened during a Garda drug search was warned that he had enough to concern him without getting involved in matters that didn’t affect him. Judge Flann Bren-

nan heard that William Doyle of 12 Langfield Road, Dundalk, is caring for his sick wife and four of his six children and warned the 47-year-old to mind his own business in future.

“Have you not got enough on your plate without getting into an argument with Gardai who are trying to conduct a drug search. “Drugs are the bane of society and they are eve-

Cricket club celebrate another successful year By Paul Byrne

DUNDALK Cricket Club held their end of season Open Day at their home ground in Dromiskin as players, supporters and children helped celebrate what was another successful year for the fledgling club. It was refreshing to see so many youngsters picking up the bat and ball on the day as the young club aims to promote the game at grassroots level. The club have made giant strides since it’s inception back in 2010, joining the Leinster

Cricket Union in 2011 and entering a team into Division 11. The club went unbeaten for the whole season and were therefore league champions with the highest points total of any club. In 2012 the club entered a second team in Division 12. The first team having been promoted to Division 9 were again Division champions and promoted to Division 8 for 2013 where they finished a very respectable third place. There are also plans to start a ladies cricket team next season as the club con-

tinues to grow. During Saturday’s open day there were two demonstration T20 matches and a barbecue on what was a glorious afternoon. The children were kept entertained with a bouncy castle as well as face painting. Just after 6pm the players and supporters gathered in front of the stand as Chairman Brendan Waters and Secretary Derek Turner announced the winners of this season’s club awards. Sajan Jayaseelan won the Player of the Year awards for his consistent displays all

Rolling back the years at Knockbridge Vintage Day News

in Brief

Realt na Mara Church Gate Collection

The Realt Na Mara Parents’ Association organises events to raise vital funds for the pupils. With ever increasing school budget cuts, fundraising has never been so important. This weekend, staff and volunteers will be collecting outside St Patricks’, The Redemptorist, St Nicholas’ and The Marist. The funds raised are allocated to numerous worthwhile and necessary projects which include a PA system and new markings for the playground, along with iPads for the Autism Centre. Your support is appreciated.

KNOCKBRIDGE Vintage Club held their annual Vintage Day and Working Rally on Sunday September 15. The weather wasn’t ideal but the members of the club were overwhelmed by the large number of people who turned out to enjoy the numerous events that took place throughout the day. Vintage enthusiasts travelled with their displays from far and near to be present at the day. There were huge displays of both tractors and cars. Stationary engines along with older

horse drawn equipment filled in the gaps on the timeline. On the other side of the hedge, man and machines of yesteryear worked full steam ahead ploughing and cultivating the newly harvested stubble. One of the features of the day was All Ireland Ploughing Champion, Gerry King demonstrating horse ploughing. Like previous years, the Dog Show and Sheep Racing proved a real hit with the crowd. Various demonstrations took place during the course of the day such as flower arrang-

ing from floral artist Veronica McMahon, art and crafts, working blacksmith to name but a few. There was fierce rivalry in the Tug of War Competition as local teams fought for the trophy with the “Pink” Team winning the title in the end captained by Donal Conroy. The Vintage Fashion Show made a welcome return this year and featured some fabulous vintage pieces which local people kindly donated for modelling. “Knockbridge’s Got Talent” was a brilliant success and a large

number of incredibly talented young musicians, singers and dancers performed. Congratulations to all the competitors that took part. 1st Place - Gavin Gribben, 2nd, Place – Paddy Wallace and 3rd Place - Caitlin McNally and Kodi McEneaney. Delicious freshly cooked food and home baking was served during the day. The committee, on behalf of the club members would like to thank everyone who supported, sponsored, helped or participated in any way.

Appeal lodged over nine month sentence A DUNDALK woman who pleaded guilty to a number of thefts in town lodged an appeal after being sentenced to nine months in prison. Natalie Dullaghan of 37 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, had the case against her adjourned at a previous hearing pending a Probation Report. However, her solicitor, Michelle Murphy, conceded that the report was not favourable and asked for another chance.

“It is a disappointing report but she has now gained an insight into the root cause of her problems. She has not been in trouble for a while and I have asked her to be more co-operative with the Probation Service”, stated Ms Murphy who conceded that the judge had been more than helpful to her. However, Judge Brennan expressed his disappointment with the report as he imposed a nine month

sentence. “This is like throwing something back in my face. I won’t have somebody coming to me saying they won’t keep appointments. She doesn’t want to co-operate with the Probation Service”, he stated. The defendant pleaded guilty to four theft charges in shops in Dundalk between July 15 2012 and March 28, 2013. An appeal to the sentence was lodged.

THE Jonesborough Charity Cycle committee presented their donations to the nominated groups recently in the Gap of the North Inn Jonesborough. This is the fifth year of the charity cycle and to date they have raised over £120k for various groups. This year £36,000

was presented to 20 different groups and among them was Rehab Care Carroll Village and Quayside Dundalk. Donations of £1,500 were received by Meningitis Thrust, Dromintee Senior Citizens Club and Less Able Club, SNAP (Special Needs Active Parents), Dundalk.

The committee wish to thank the main sponsors, mile sponsors, all who donated to the auction JMC Cycle for their technical support on the day of the cycle and any other individual or group that helped to making this an enjoyable and successful event for everyone involved.

Workers and Struggles

A POETRY reading featuring some of Dundalk’s best know faces is to take place in celebration of All Ireland Poetry day. As this year marks the centenary of the 1913 Lock Out the theme of the event is ‘Workers and their Struggles.’ The event will feature local people sharing their favourite poetry and some work that they wrote themselves. It will be followed by a discussion of what poetry means in Ireland today. County Arts Officer, Brian Harten said, “everybody has a favourite poem, and “Workers and Their Struggles” will encourage people to think about the poems which have made an impression on them in the past. As well as that, it’s good to be reminded that Ireland is still producing really good poets, and whether we’re in the middle of a boom or a recession, people still write poetry and people still read it. It’s part of what makes us human The event takes place on Monday September 30 at 1pm in the Town Hall. Admission is free.

The girl that beat her is from Russia and is the current World Champion so that shows the calibre of opponent she was up against”, added Eamon. Eadaoin was understandably delighted with her medal and revealed that she is setting her sights on the World Championships in Rome next year, “I’ve been training hard with Eamon and I’m delighted to have won a silver. I really love musical forms and Eamon is a brilliant

teacher and I can’t wait to get back training again. The National Championships are on in March and if I do well there I qualify for the World Championships so I’m going to keep working hard” she explained.” Enda and Darren who both train in MasF on Distillery Lane under the watchful eye of their trainer Wayne Rutherford were also delighted with their exploits in Poland. Enda from Kilkurry specialises in the Bo Staff and was training five nights a week as he prepared for the Championships. That hard work paid off as he won silver in what was a very tough section.

He recently won gold in the senior weapons division in his final National junior competition winning another National title for himself as well as a spot on the Irish Kickboxing team so he went into the championships high on confidence. Enda’s father Pat thanked the people of Dundalk for getting behind Enda as he raised money throughout the year to fund the trip to Poland. “We’re delighted that Enda did himself proud over in Poland and it was great to see all his hard work pay off. The people of Dundalk were great all throughout the year as we held various fundraisers and

we want to say a big thank you to them all” he added. Current National champion, Darren O’Donogh, entered the younger cadet division for forms and weapons where he bagged himself two bronze medals beating a host of international competitors along the way. Darren who has been competing for seven years was delighted with his first ever international medals. “We had a great time in Poland and it was nice to come away with a couple of medals. I’m aiming to make the World Championships in Italy next year so I’m going to keep on working hard” he added.

Wednesday: Why I Returned To Learning by Tracey About eight months ago, I was at work and I was listening to the radio. I heard a woman talk about her experience of returning to learning. She talked about going to the VEC in Dundalk to learn how to read. I liked her story. The phone number was given out at the end of the show. I phoned the number. I was talking to a woman called Mary. She asked me to call to the Centre. The following week I met a man called Francis. He took my details and we had a chat about what I wanted to learn. A short time later I met my tutor. My first tutor was called Mark. We started reading small books and filling out forms. I found this hard at first, but it got easier. I was able to take my time and ask questions. We looked at newspapers and we worked on words that I was not sure about. We worked well together, then Mark moved to France. My second tutor is Kathryn. I am doing reading, writing and spellings. Sometimes I find it hard to remember spellings. I know it will take time, but I’m glad I returned to learning. Thursday: My Learning Experience, by Therese At 42 I decided to return to education because I wanted to be able to help my two girls with their homework. I also wanted to be able to read and write with confidence. I did not know what to expect. I thought it would be the same as school. I really hated school. When I started my reading class I was very nervous. It took me ten

years to get the courage to be here today. I really don’t know what I was worrying about because everyone is so friendly and the teachers are great. I’ve been attending the Adult Learning Service, here in Dundalk, for about a year now and I feel happier in myself. I am reading as much as I can and I feel more confident in myself. I’ve learned a lot about myself. Bit by bit my reading and writing has got better and I can do things that I could not do before. I’m sorry I did not do this sooner but I am so happy that I am back learning. My dream is to sit the Junior Certificate. Friday Getting there by John I first got to know about the Adult Learning Service when my girlfriend picked up a leaflet in the local shop. My reading and writing weren’t great. It took me a long time before I phoned the number. This is my second year attending classes and I’ve had really nice teachers. I worked with a tutor for the first year and it was great. It gave me a chance to settle in. Now I am in a class with six people like my-

self. It has given me great confidence in my work. I drive a truck for a living. It is great being able to read the order forms that people give me. I would like to give up the truck driving now that I have got better at reading and writing. I would like to go on the road at sales, selling some kind of products. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m getting there.

by Mary. She was very helpful. She put me in contact with a tutor. I am very happy that I have made this decision at this time of my life and I hope this story will help other people to visit the Adult Learning Service.

Dundalk darts league prepares for even better season ahead THE AGM of the Dundalk & District Darts League was held in the Commercial Club Dundalk on the September 12 and it proved to be as eventful as ever with a large attendance debating a number of issues which were aimed at improving the league. The outgoing Chairman Brian McArdle opened the meeting and praised all the committee and all the players within the league for making the league a great success in the 2012/2013 season. He noted how the league had gone from strength to strength and he hoped that it continued for the upcoming season. The Secretary’s address was read by Mickey Kelly and the Treasurer’s report was explained by Niamh Brady, both of these were received well by the assembled crowd who were given the opportunity to discuss

the season and ask any questions of the committee about the previous year. The committee stood down and the floor was opened for the election of officers for the upcoming season. The following committee was elected and took its place at the top table: Chairman - Brendan O’Rourke; Vice Chairman - Mickey Kelly; Secretary - Niamh Brady; Treasurer- Peter Neary; PRO - John O’Brien; Committe members - James Callan and Patrick Taaffe. The first job for the committee was the resolution of a number of proposals that had been put forward for the improvement of the league. The most notable of these was the inclusion of a third round in the league which will make the competition run longer as a number of people thought the league

finished too early last year. A number of additions and amendments to the rules were made to clarify some grey areas which were open to interpretations. As with all AGMs there were some proposals that caused contention but the committee that have been elected have committed to making this year an even more prosperous year for

Dundalk and District Darts League and will continue to listen to the views of all players throughout the league. Proposed dates: All team sheets to be returned by October 1 with full fee and affiliation fees to the Commercial Club at 8pm. Short Captains Meeting to be held. Proposed Date League start is October 17.

NEW DACIA LOGAN MCV Dacia’s Logan MCV, Ireland’s most affordable new family car, has arrived in Louth at Blackstone Motors Drogheda. The arrival of the new Dacia Logan MCV (Maximum Capacity Vehicle) with its bestin class boot capacity and ample space for 5 adults is sure to set pulses racing in Louth with its choice of three frugal engines and jaw dropping price tag from €11,190. With a boot to take on the bigger well known brand’s estates let alone one to shame every other supermini estate the Logan MCV is every inch a Maximum Capacity Vehicle. Its 573 litre boot which expands to 1,518 litres with the rear seats folded down, enabling you to transport large and awkward items is a doddle. A 60/40 splitfolding rear seat and a forward-folding front passenger seat also make for maximum flexibility when driving with rear passengers or transporting longer items. A virtually unknown brand in Ireland until the Duster arrived

and started to clean up, over 1,100 Dacia have been registered so far in 2013. The supermini Sandero has also proved extremely popular and is Ireland’s most affordable car from just €99 a month. With the new Dacia Logan MCV, big space doesn’t mean big running costs. The state-of-the-art TCe 90 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine combines peppy performance with frugal fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions of just 116 g/ km. Or why not choose the dCi 90 diesel engine, with combined fuel consumption of 3.8 l/100km (74.3mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km both with ECO mode. With two trim levels, Alternative and Signature and an up to 5 year unlimited mileage warranty* the Logan MCV offers a groundbreaking combination of practicality and affordability. Like every other Dacia model, the current version of Logan MCV has been a global smash hit. The new five-seat model is effectively an estate version of the Sandero

supermini, sharing exactly the same underpinnings, engines and transmissions, but with a different look beyond the driver’s door. Whether it’s going to be used as the family workhorse, taking dogs to the park, carting mountain bikes or loading up with the latest season’s gardening essentials, Logan MCV is built to make life simple. That its boot is vast is immediately obvious, but backing up its impressive practicality is an equally helpful low loading lip, just 589mm up from the ground. The boot opening’s a decent size too, with a 787mm entry gap up to the roof, combined with a 1011mm boot opening width. Forget the sink, with those kinds of figures, it’s plenty big enough to take the entire kitchen…. Underneath its smart looks, Logan MCV has plenty more to offer. Including bulletproof reliability and very low running costs. The starting point for this load-lugging frivolity is Alternative. Unlike its Sandero and Duster siblings, it even

comes with the stylish addition of body coloured bumpers and black roof bars. Naturally, the 15” ‘Colorado’ steel wheel trims round off its practical, rugged look. Dacia hasn’t skimped on safety kit though, with ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), ASR traction control, ISOFIX points in both outer rear seats and four airbags all fitted as standard. On the inside, its 573 litre boot versatility grows with a 60/40 split rear folding seats. The Alternative trim comes with Bluetooth connectivity, radio with CD player, USB connection for MP3 player, electric front windows, anti-intruder automatic door-locking, and remote central locking. With the Signature trim, comes additional style and comfort features. Among them are a 7-function on board computer, cruise control and speed limiter function, electric rear windows, and air conditioning. Things get even better

with a height adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel, leather steering wheel and gear knob, fingertip remote controls and four speakers. The interior also becomes more upmarket with a graphite look finish for the centre console surround, front door handles and steering wheel lower insert. Its modern looks are also made even sharper with 15” ‘Sahara’ alloy wheel trims, front fog lights, body-coloured door handles, satin chrome roof bars and a chrome front grille. Not only will Logan MCV be affordable to buy, it’ll also be economical to run. Powering it are a choice of three frugal engines. The first, the 1.2 16V 75, one of the Renault Group’s most tried and tested engines, is on offer with each trim level.

The even more frugal, yet powerful, TCe 90 and dCi 90, can also be had with both Alternative and Signature. Even the heaviest Logan MCV only weighs in at 1090kg, so in spite of its heady load-carrying ability, it hasn’t got a hulking great body to haul around. Proving it, the smallest powerplant, the four-cylinder 1.2 petrol delivers 5.8 l/100km (48.7 mpg) on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 135g/km, enough for road tax band B2 at €280 a year. The second engine for Dacia’s new supermini estate is the TCe 90. It’s relatively new to the brand, following its launch on Sandero, after debuting in the Renault Clio with the added bonus of Stop&Start technology. In Logan MCV, the 0.9-litre three-cylinder

turbocharged unit is capable of 175km/h, with fuel economy of 5.0 l/100km (56.5 mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 116 g/km. Tax band A4 at €200 a year. Rounding off the series of modern engines is the new dCi 90. Belying its 1.5-litre diesel size, it delivers 3.8 l/100km (74.3 mpg) and sub-100 grams of CO2 per kilometre emissions and road tax of just €180 a year. The two top engines also boast an ECO mode to limit engine torque, both to help you eek the most out of your tank – by 10% - and save you valuable cents at the pumps. Combined with a gearshift indicator, they’ll also no doubt help you do your bit for the environment too. When it comes to enhancing the smart looks

of Logan MCV, several paint colours are available. Both trims come in glacier white, with optional metallic paints Fire Red, Platinum, Pearl Black, Sea Blue and Ash Gray. As with the other two Dacia models the Logan MCV comes with a standard warranty of 3 years/100,000 KM. Those seeking even more peace of mind can opt for an up to 5 year unlimited mileage warranty for only €369. Through Dacia Finance available at Blackstone Motors you can drive home a new Logan MCV from a shockingly affordable price of just €119 per month.
