A group of concerned residents have taken positive steps to protect their community by tackling a drug problem that they feared would escalate. Last week a group of residents in the Fr Murray Park and Castletown Road area took action against a den that has been used to inject and smoke drugs. The group boarded-up a shed behind what was known as ‘Rices Shop’ on the Castletown Road that is surrounded by dumped rubbish and is carpeted with used needles and burnt tinfoil. They placed a sign reading ‘Drug Den – Closed by the Public’ on the door. The group say that they had no other option but to take action after appealing to

local authorities, estate agents, banks and anyone involved with the property, but to no avail. The continued use of the shed as a drug den they felt was endangering the community and posed a health risk to anyone who may wander in there. The group first entered the shed three weeks ago after speaking to other members of the community about the increase in people going in and out of the fire damaged property. Inside they discovered squalid conditions with drug paraphernalia scattered around the property including used needles, burnt tin foil, medicine bottles and packets. The surrounding area has also been used as a rubbish dump. Continued on Page 2

Rory captures great GAA quotes By Paul Byrne There have been many inspirational performances by GAA greats over the years and also many inspirational words about the game from legends such as Micheal O Muircheartaigh. Christy Ring, Darragh O Sé and Bernard Brogan. Louth Village man Rory Callan has lovingly put together a collection of many of these quotations to form a brand new book which he has called ‘The Little Book of GAA Quotations” From the start of the GAA in the 1890s right up to the present day, it has been at the heart of communities throughout Ireland and has

project areas. Project geologist Dr. Siobhán E. Power was on hand along with archaeologist, Dr. Vanessa Ryan, and volunteer Rachel Curran, to meet with visitors and talk about the project in an informal setting over a cup of coffee. Vanessa and Siobhán explained that implementation of the project would involve the promotion of the three areas within one tourism destination, with a strong focus on the geology, geomorphology and archaeology of each area. The Dundalk Tourist Office provided the perfect venue for the event and Dundalk Tourism Officer, Sinéad Roche, offered

a warm welcome to the project team members, along with Fiona Cunningham and Lucy Andersson of the Dundalk Bids Office. Louth Heritage Officer, Brendan McSherry and Dundalk Chamber of Commerce PRO Paddy Malone were also in attendance. Interest in the project from local political representatives was strong. The Chair of the Louth County Council, Fianna Fáil councillor Declan Breathnach, along with the Chair of the Dundalk Town Council, Fine Gael’s Eamon O’Boyle, attended the event and were both vocal in their support of the project. Declan Breathnach, commented that: “The

The residents in the area have a number of additional concerns as well as the anti-social behaviour. They fear an infestation of rodents that will be driven from the rubbish dumps as temperatures drop. People living in sight of the entrance say that it is used by local school children to hand-out and they have seen young people in school uniforms going into the property during schools hours. “I see people going in and out every day, in the gate or hopping the wall. The school kids use it for mitching, you can see them going in with their school bags on their back,” said a resident who does not want to be named. “I once saw a woman going into it with a buggy, I also saw a heavily pregnant woman going in too,” they added. The residents say that by boarding up the drug den they are only tackling the symptoms of the problem and expressed their hope that the relevant authorities will deal with the wider issue of drug abuse in Dundalk. One supporter said that the people who use drugs are troubled and in need of help. “We don’t support any type of vigilante behaviour. These people should be taken care of, they are victims themselves,” he said. The group called for the relevant authorities to step-in and prevent continued anti-social behaviour in the Castletown Road property and to help

potential of this project for showcasing the unique geological and archaeological heritage of the Mourne Cooley Gullion region is enormous, and its importance as an educational tool is equally valuable.” While Eamon O’ Boyle added that: “Any form of tourism, be it ecological, geological or archaeological should be supported locally and promoted. This project is representative of a new and exciting genre of tourism which will hopefully boost local tourism businesses.” Speaking after the event, Sinéad Roche thanked everyone who had attended and said she looked forward to working on the project.

Remarks a poor reflection on the people of Louth Remarks made to a number of African youths by a Dundalk man were described as being a poor reflection on the people of Louth and Ireland. Colm McDonnell of 19 Lios Mead, Blackrock Road, Dundalk, faced a charge of threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour, arising out of an incident at Blackrock on June 8 this year when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Garda Pearse Doherty told the court that he was on the beat in Blackrock on that day and had stopped to talk to

people when he overheard the defendant asking the youths “where is Africa?”. He added that the youths later informed him that the remark was made to them five times in total. Solicitor for Mr McDonnell, Dermot Lavery, stated that his client had been at a barbecue and was intoxicated. His instructions were that he meant nothing by the remark. “It is a meaningless remark and we accept that it happened by I would say that it benign. I would say that the youths would have heard worse”, ex-

plained the solicitor. Gda Doherty stated that the remark was made to youths with a different colour skin, it can’t be interpreted as meaningless. However, the solicitor suggested if somebody travelled to Africa and were asked five times ‘where is Ireland?’ would they be offended. “I heard the remark and it was said in a drunken bowsey manner and it is a poor reflection of the Louth and Ireland that it was said to people not born here but who are Irish citizens”, explained the Garda,

who repeated the comments in the tone they were expressed at the request of Mr Lavery. “The test is what the words mean”, stated the solicitor. “I would say they mean nothing but that meaning has been imported into them. The Garda may be correct, but how does he know? If somebody wanted to be offensive there are other things they could say.” Judge Flann Brennan stated that he would adjourn the case until October 9 to consider the matter in terms of what is said and the interpretation of it.

St Gerard’s Novena time again THE ever-popular St Gerard’s Novena will commence on Tuesday October 8, and run for nine days to Wednesday October 16. The theme for this year’s novena is ‘Stand firm in the Faith’. The daily preaching themes are taken from the teachings of Vatican 11 and should reflect the journey of faith that we all have in our lives. Novena director, Fr. Michael Cusack, expects that there may even be bigger crowds attending the novena this year since so many

people are truly struggling and needing support. “This has been a very difficult year for so many people and more than ever before we need to know that we are not alone. The most important message that the novena should bring is a message of hope and consolation. “This novena is always a time of great solidarity and really ignites the community spirit in the people of Dundalk and the surrounding counties, towns and villages.

Our doors are open to all and all will be welcome. “The Novena is only possible because of the hard work and effort of so many dedicated women and men”, explained Fr Cusack. There are 10 daily sessions on the weekdays: 7am, 9.30am, 11.30am, 1.10pm, 2.30pm, 4.30pm, 6pm, 7.30pm, 9pm and 10.30pm. The Sunday Novena Times are 7am, 8am, 9.30, 11am, 12.30pm, 4.30pm, 6pm, 7.30pm and 9pm. ‘The Healing Mass with the Anointing of

the Sick and Aged’ will be on Saturday 12 at 11.30am and 2.30pm. Also on that day we have guest speakers Bobby-Leigh Herdman and Christopher Smith who will speak about the Redemptorist Missionary Vocation. ‘The Blessing of Babies and Young Children’ will be at 2.30pm on Sunday 13. The Novena is also celebrated at 10am and 7.30pm in the Church of the Redeemer, Ard Easmuinn. Sunday times there are 10am, 11.30am and 6pm.

Adams wants ‘yes’ vote

Sinn Féin Louth TD and Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams was canvassing in Dundalk for a ‘Yes’ vote in the Seanad Referendum on Friday. The Louth TD was accompanied by Councillor Pearse McGeough, Councillor Imelda Munster and Councillor Edel Corrigan. “The Government rejected this and has only allowed for a YES or NO response to abolition. This is why Sinn Féin is calling for YES vote to abolish the Seanad on Friday”, said Mr Adams.

Rory captures great GAA quotes From page 1 teacher in Ardee Community School, first got the idea for the book after a chat with his uncle who emigrated to London many years ago. “I was talking to my uncle a while back and he was telling me about how he coped with homesick when he first moved to London. Whenever there was a GAA match on himself and his friends would attach their transistor radio to a metal conduit on electricity poles to get a clear signal and

they would all listen to the game. He told me that the GAA gave him and his Irish friends a real sense of cultural identity”, explained Rory who lives in Ravensdale. “That got me thinking about how strong the GAA community has been over the years and how inspirational the game can be to so many people. The GAA has had huge benefits in communities and has been a big help in helping to keep kids fit, healthy and out of trouble. I’m a huge fan of the GAA anyway

so it was a labour of love really to dig out some of the more inspirational and motivational quotes from GAA greats throughout the years”, he added. This isn’t Rory’s first foray into the world of publishing having released a series of books last year. It was in his role as a Special Educational Needs teacher that he encountered the difficulty of getting good quality books that could hold the interest of reluctant teenage readers. After many frustrating search-

es, he decided to write a series of football themed books for his students. Football All Stars was the result. The books generated much interest and lively discussion amongst the students. For the first time, many of the pupils were enjoying rather than enduring a reading experience. He hopes that his latest book can also be enjoyed by GAA lovers throughout the country with the book likely to be a fixture in many Christmas stockings this December.

Dundalk Simon community is celebrating 40 years in Dundalk this year and is planning a fundraising night that also celebrates the soundtrack to their progress. Taking the music that was enjoyed by the staff, volunteers and residents as well as the general public, ‘Requiem for a Hippy’ takes place this October 3 and the proceeds will help with the demanding winter ahead. Dundalk Simon Community opened in 1973 and was based in Francis Street. Initially to run as a day service where people could drop-in and get a warm meal. However, the volunteers

that ran it became aware that the demand was higher than expected and began fundraising to improve the services. They raised enough to buy a house and this has developed so that Simon have been able to create a number of shelters in Dundalk and offer more people the support they need. From the earliest days of Simon in Dundalk the volunteers at Simon have continued to respond to the needs of the people who use their services, according to Niall Mulligan, manager of Dundalk Simon. “People approach us to use the service and to get involved with helping, when we get to know them and they get to know us and the trust develops.

You get to know how and why people become homeless. We can see the gaps where people can fall, like during the detox period. Now for example we work with Turas addiction councillors in community rehab scheme,” said Niall. After 40 years in Dundalk the staff in Dundalk Simon have seen the shifts and changes in Irish society and the development of the local community that impact on homelessness. “There can be a perception, a narrow one, that most people who are homeless fit into certain categories, older men with alcohol problem for example. However, the clientele of Simon is getting younger,” noted Niall.

One of the most important aims of the groups locally is to prevent people from sleeping rough. The volunteers with Simon have little time to celebrate the charity’s successes over the years as fundraising continues and they enter the most demanding period of the year and the charity are experts at making a little go a long way. They can ensure that a service user is well fed for only €2 per day. Niall Mullign also praised local schools who he described as ‘fantastic’. ‘Requiem for a Hippy’ a fundraiser for the Simon takes place takes place on October 3 in the Spirit Store.

Nicola Barry run for cancer care Stabannon is the place to be this Sunday as the inaugural ‘Nicola Barry Run for Cancer Care’ beginning at 2pm. There will be a 5k and a 10k on the day with the organisers naming the race after the inspiring story of Stabannon Ladies goalkeeper Nicola Barry. Last year 24-year-old Nicola was recovering at home having just had an operation to remove a tumour from her brain. The

Stabannon Ladies football goalkeeper had 95% of the tumour removed by surgeons and a year later she has thankfully well on the road to recovery. As a result, Nicola’s Stabannon team mates decided to do something to help some cancer charities and it ended up with us having the idea for the ‘Nicola Barry Run for Cancer Care’. Nicola will be taking part in the urn and participants can enter

the run online on www.precisiontiming.net Donations can be made on the day and on line donations are also being accepted on www.precisiontiming.net. Refreshments will be served and there will be face-painting in the Old School Hall in Stabannon following the run. There will be further events later that evening. As part of the nationwide Clean Coasts weekend the local Campbell/Donnelly Sinn Fein Cumann organised clean ups at Gyles Quay and Greenore on Saturday September 21. Thirty people took part in the Gyles Quay event with 35 at Greenore. Councillor Jim Loughran who was in attendance, praised those who had given up their Saturday afternoon to help clean up the beaches, “If we were all just that little bit more responsible and used the bins provided or took home our own rubbish, then there would be no need to organise such events”, he noted. The Cumann would like to thank all who helped make the day a success.

Women’s Aid charity walk A local walking group have put their best foot forward for charity by collecting €2,000 for charity. The Tuesday night walkers from the Druids walking group stepped it out in the Mourne Mountains on the last Sunday in August to raise the funds for the local Women’s Aid, as Jock

McArdle explained. “Every Tuesday from April to August we have a walk in the Cooley Mountains for newcomers or those that might not consider themselves to be very fit. “Just to round off the season we decided to have a charity walk in the Mourne Mountains which we called the Wee Brave-

heart as everyone had to wear a kilt or tartan. “We had 92 people taking part and raised €2,000 which we decided to give to the local Women’s Aid. Everyone was happy to take part and we had a good day out with the added bonus being that we collected some money for charity”, explained Jock.

Senator Mary Moran has called on the electorate not to vote for the abolition of the Seanad in Friday’s referendum, and has underlined the need for reform. “I believe strongly that the way to true political reform does not include abolition of the Seanad chamber. In my view we need a double system. “If we do not have a fail safe system of scrutinising the legislation, as has been proven several times in debates in the Seanad Chamber , then we have a problem. “I will fully respect the decision of the Irish people in the forthcoming referendum on Seanad abolition. However I will most certainly be voting no in the referendum on 4 October”, explained Mary.

Skipping masterclass visits Dun Dealgan By Paul Byrne

George Kubu has completed his skipping tour of Dundalk by giving a masterclass to the eager pupils of Dun Dealgan NS on Friday. George gained qualifications in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Skipping Coaching through the British Rope Skipping Association and has enjoyed coaching thousands of children in hundreds of schools over the last eight years. As the pupils made their way to the school hall, George from the skipping4schools educational programme was already on the balls of his feet bouncing up and down with his skipping rope. An intensive but fun half hour workout followed with George passing on skipping techniques to an interested group of third and fourth class students. Squeals of delight could be heard as pupils skipped backwards as well as hopping on one leg as George put them through their paces. The session ended with the pupils skipping for a full minute to show

them the effects a short workout can have on the heart. Exhausted but smiling the children left the hall with the best skippers preparing to take part in the skipping finale which took place for the whole school at the end of the day. George returned to England over the weekend but he was delighted with how well his skipping classes Pupils at Dun Dealgan NS enjoying ‘Double Dutch’ skipping were received in Dundalk. “The schools and especially the children were brilliant all week and I’d like to thank them all for being so mannerly and well behaved. I hope they enjoyed the classes and hopefully it will help bring the skipping rope back into the schools to be used as an aid to keep children fit and healthy.” explained George. “We say it all the time but the skipping rope is such a wonderful way to keep fit. It’s inexpensive, easy to do and you can do it on your own. Hopefully I’ll be back around these parts at some stage in the future and we can teach the children some new and fun exercises with the rope” he added.

als and tribulations, from his early childhood in Dublin to his final years in France. A motley crew of characters from high society to low, literature and law, friends and foes are introduced and bring new life to the rise and fall of Oscar Wilde. This production is

the result of collaboration between Matt and Stephen and well known Dublin Producer Pat Talbot. The show received rave reviews during its run in Dublin’s Viking theatre in March this year. The six-night run was sold out every night with the two Dundalk actors receiving standing ovations. The Importance of being Wilde is set to go on a nationwide tour and this will be Dundalk audiences opportunity to see the play before it moves on. The show begins at 8pm on Thursday and Friday October 3 and 4. Tickets €5, Booking 0429392919.

There will be a buffet car on the train for snacks, tea, coffee and alcoholic drinks but patrons are welcome to bring packed lunches with them if

they so wish. Whitehead is the Royal Preservation Society of Ireland’s main workshop for the restoration of locomotive steam engines and heritage railway rolling stock. The Dundalk Railway Heritage Society was formed from a committee of former employees of the GNR Goods Depot at Barrack Street. Patsy Duffy who is chairman of the society says the purpose of the heritage society is to expand knowledge of the railway heritage not just of Barrack Street, but also of Dundalk Engineering Works on the Ardee Road which closed in September 1958 as a result of the assimilation of the GNR into CIE. in Brief

Geraldines GFC are celebrating another championship victory after the club landed the Minor title in Drogheda on Sunday afternoon. The team from Blackrock/Haggardstown came out on top against St Marys to claim the Fr Larry Murray Cup for the fourth time in their history. It was a disappointing day for Ardee St Marys who lost out in the final despite a brave effort. The Mid Louth side made a great start and were seven points up at the break but were unable to sustain the effort and lost out by 4-9 to 1-9. Meanwhile, there was further disappointment for Cooley Kickhams who lost out in the senior final to Newtown Blues in Drogheda. The Blues emerged with a 2-15 to 0-13 win. Programme for long-term unemployed By Paul Byrne

Worklink have put together a programme to help unemployed people to break the unemployed cycle and help them get back to work. Worklink is a volunteer led employment support network formed as a response to the unemployed crisis in Ireland. It has been formed to help unemployed jobseekers to successfully transition into full employment. WorkOut is the name of the programme put together by Worklink which will specifically target long term un-

employed people in the North East. It involves six modules which will bring participants right through the job search process from designing a CV to landing the job. The purpose of this programme is to ensure that jobseekers are “interview ready”. Using a series of practical exercises, discussion and assignments between modules, participants will gain new insights and ideas to apply to their work search, get a new perspective on options open to them and implement a pro-active work search plan. This programme has been

developed by Worklink and will be delivered by an experienced and qualified Worklink volunteer, with a background in career coaching, training and/or HR. It is best suited to those who have not participated in similar programmes before and wish to avoid the pitfalls that can result in delays in finding work. A key component of this programme is that participants support each other and sign up to completing all six modules in order to achieve the maximum benefit of the content- approximately 90 mins per week over a six

week period on Tuesday evenings. The programme is free to jobseekers who are on the live register with programme leaders and job coaches volunteering their time and expertise for free. It starts off with an introductory session on October 15 in O Fiach College, Dundalk and continues weekly for six more weeks. registration is essential, as places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. For further information contact Deirdre Ryan on 0862374841 or email deirdre.ryan@worklink.ie.

Exhibition will raise awareness of Deaf Society issues By Paul Byrne

The Irish Deaf Society and the Dundalk Deaf Group are holding a photography exhibition in the Dundalk museum featuring images of Irish celebrities such as Andrea Corr, Rachel Allen, Ryan Tubridy, Jedward and many more signing a letter of the Irish Sign Language (ISL) alphabet. The ‘Signs of Life’ exhibition will feature a series of 26 visual beautiful photographs, taken by a Deaf photographer, Johnny Corcoran, and will open in Dundalk on October 15 (official opening night will be on October 17) with the exhibition hoping to raise awareness and educate people with regards to ISL. ISL is the first language of the Irish Deaf community and is used daily by more than

40,000 people. It is not officially recognised in this country meaning that many Deaf people struggle to access basic services. As part of the Irish Deaf Society’s 30th anniversary celebrations they are inviting the public to join them in celebrating this unique language and hope it will encourage interest in, and awareness of, Deaf culture around the county. This free exhibition is interactive, fun, innovative and suitable for all ages with educational workshops planned that are aimed both at students and the general public. Corinne Kilkenny and Caitriona McCaughey from the Dundalk Deaf Group hope that the exhibition can raise awareness about everyday issues deaf people face. “Simple things that

Cuchulainn’s Bryan McCrystal has reclaimed his 100mile time Trial Record in spectacular fashion while competing in the Ulster event on Sunday. The event was held in Woodgreen, north of Belfast, on a warm but windy day, which was hardly ideal for fast times. Bryan first broke the record back in 2011, but 2012 saw the record lowered to 3:45:05 by John Madden of Antrim’s Curran Racing Team. After a successful season of road racing, including a superb debut in the An Post Rás, Bryan travelled to Woodgreen with

n the current economic climate, good planning is more essential than ever and when it comes to Christmas shopping there are few better ways to or-

ganise the budget than through a Christmas Club. This traditional savings scheme has remained popular over the years and is an ideal way to take the pressure

off when it comes to December. Joining a Christmas Club is certainly one way to budget for the added expense of gifts, food and decorations over the holi-

days. This budgeting tool has been provided by banks and credit unions for decades, as well as many retailers who are offering their own Christmas Clubs. One retailer pointed out the benefits of regular saving coming up to the Christmas period. “A Christmas Club account is a great tool for gradually putting away money throughout the year to spread the financial burden of holiday spending. “This has always been a popular option for our customers and in recent times the huge benefits on offer from a Christmas Club have become even more obvious. “Different people put a wide range of money away every week but it all helps in the end. It really is a matter of what you can afford but there is no doubt that come December you will see the great benefit of planning ahead.” The Christmas club is a savings programme that

was first offered by various banks during the Great Depression in America. The concept is that bank customers deposit a set amount of money each week into a special savings account, and receive the money back at the end of the year for Christmas shopping. Following the success of the schemes, retailers then began to open their own Christmas Clubs to offer customers the opportunity to save for particular items within their shops. The first known Christmas club started in 1909, when Merkel Landis, treasurer of the Carlisle (Pennsylvania) Trust Company, introduced the first Christmas savings fund.

The club generated 350 customers who saved about $28 each, and the money was disbursed on December 1 of that year.

Mark Gaughran and Daniel Bryant at the Fun Fair at the Marshes Shopping Centre on Sunday afternoon

Local singer/songwriter Stewart Agnew will release his new EP this Monday called ‘Candy Floss’. The title track of the EP, which featured on his 2011 album Hello Bright Spark, will also be released as a single, with a video for it having been recorded recently in Bellurgan Park. To coincide with his first release in two years, Agnew will also embark on a mini-tour, including a headline show at The Spirit Store on Saturday October 19. The new EP will feature four tracks, including previously unreleased titles ‘For Annie’ and ‘I Won’t Let You Down’. Speaking about the release of his

first EP, Agnew said he was using it as a platform to build on ahead of his planned fourth album. “It’s hard to believe it’s almost two years since I released ‘Hello Bright Spark’ so we’re just using the EP as a way of keeping things fresh. “This will be the last single from the album and I hope to record a new album then after Christmas, with the hope being to have something released in the spring”, Agnew said. Stewart will kick-start his mini-tour with a performance in the Workman’s Club in Dublin on Thursday October 17, where he will be supported by The Voice star Katy Anna Mohan. Dealgan Boxing club to celebrate 75 great years By Niamh Kirk

We are now taking Family Notices Our weekly Deadline is 4pm Fridays prior to Wednesday publication, contact Noeleen for further information. Tel 042 9320888

The Dealgan Amateur Boxing Club, Dundalk’s oldest and most successful boxing club celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. This historic club founded in 1938 has been in various locations including the Vinegar Mans yard, the ESB premises in Chapel Street, under the supervision of the late Willie Moore, before finding its home in Marian Park in 1993. Under the expert guidance of Irish senior coach Anto Donnelly

along with top coaches Tony Broadhurst and Jim O’Connor the club evolved from a rundown building into a state of the art training facility, producing most of Dundalk’s and some of the country’s finest amateur boxers. To date, the club has produced 51 All- Ireland champions and 15 international boxers. In 1996 Dealgan claimed the most prestigious title of all when Eugene McEneaney became the town’s first All-Ireland senior champion in the lightweight division. Other stars to evolve

from Dealgan were All- Ireland senior lightwelterweight champion and twice Cism world champion, Michael Kelly as well as European medalists David Joyce, Paul and Stephen Broadhurst. This year Dealgan BC has further cause to celebrate as its 16 year old starlet Amy Broadhurst became both European Union and European featherweight champion. Although the club boasts an abundance of talent within the ropes, it prides itself in aiding young people in their

own personal development through the medium of sport. In celebration of its 75th year, a gala dinner show, in name of the late Joe Ashmore the president of the club, will be held in the Fairways hotel, Dundalk, on Saturday October 5 at 7:30pm. No less than 14 Irish champions will take to the ring including European champion, Amy Broadhurst. Special guests will be Olympic silver medalist Kenny Egan and former World champion Bernard Dunne. FIVE STAR KIA CARENS

The new Kia Carens MPV has scored five stars in the latest Euro NCAP tests. In the latest tougher NCAP tests it achieved Adult Occupant Protection (94%), Child Occupant Protection (76%), Pedestrian protection (64%) and Safety Assist equipment (81%). Which compares to the Citroen C4 Picasso that was recently tested, which scored Adult Occupant Protection (86%), Child Occupant Protection (88%), Pedestrian protection (68%) and Safety Assist equipment (81%). Euro NCAP testers awarded the Carens maximum point

scores for side impact protection against a barrier, child protection for 18-month old infants, front seat whiplash protection and protection for pedestrians' legs. NCAP commented that the new Carens is equipped with a 'belt-up' reminder for all seats, a driver-set adjustable speed limiter and that all of the child restraint types for which the car is designed could be properly installed. The Carens is equipped with six airbags (front, front side and curtain), seatbelt reminders for all occupants, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hillstart Assist Control) to prevent

roll-back and ESS (Emergency Stop Signalling) which flashes the brake lights to alert other motorists when the driver is making an emergency stop, which is standard across the range. There is a choice of three engines, one petrol a 1.6 litre unit producing 133 bhp, and two diesel 144 bhp and 134 bhp. There are four trim levels '1', '2', '3' and '3 Sat Nav' with standard equipment including air conditioning, leather trimmed steering wheel, seven seats, all round electric windows, body coloured bumpers, door handles and wing mirrors.

seat leon st

SEAT should have the new Leon ST available to Irish buyers early next year. The Leon ST features roof rails as standard, a doublefloor setup in the boot with the seats folded down it will swallow up to 1,470 litres of luggage. On the ‘SE’ and ‘FR’ models there are handles on the side walls of the boot that

allow you to remotely lower the seats. It is possible to specify a fold down front passenger seat, if you need to carry longer loads. There is a choice of petrol and diesel engines, which range on petrol front from the 1.2 TSI 105 PS, through the 1.4 TSI 140 PS and on to the most powerful 1.8 TSI 180 PS.

Where the diesel prefers have two versions of the 1.6 TDI – a standard 105 PS variant, and the 110 PS Ecomotive. Following those are the 2.0 TDI units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS. A range of transmissions are available, from fiveor six-speed manual gearboxes to a six- or seven-speed DSG automatic.
