NINE days after leaving their starting point in Faughart the St Brigid’s Way pilgrims arrived in Kildare Town centre having completed their magical journey following the ancient path of Brigid, goddess and Celtic Christian saint. Dolores Whelan and Karen Ward who organised the pilgrimage spoke of the wonderful spiritual journey and spectacular landscapes they enjoyed on their journey. “We had such a wonderful time and everybody on the group got a lot out of our nine day pilgrimage”, explained Karen. “We had nine glorious days of sunshine and nine days of spectacular scenery including Cuchulainn’s Stone, the Famine stone, the Hill of Slane, the beauty of Tara and the wide open spaces of the Curragh.
“26 of us walked into Kildare town and we got a lovely reception from the locals and the town dignitaries. The whole walk was so powerful and I really got a strong sense that I was walking in the footsteps of my ancestors.” she added. Dolores who is a teacher, educator, author and spiritual guide within the Celtic spiritual community said it had been a pleasure to walk the ancient pathway linking the two historical sites. “People came from Australia, the USA, Denmark Scotland and England to join us in our walk and they all enjoyed the walk immensely. They were the right people for the walk and they got a lot out of it. This will be an annual event and it’s going to get bigger as each year passes”, she noted. See page 16

Calls to get bridge back on track
There have been urgent calls for the Government to intervene to get the narrow Water Bridge Project back on track. Government representitves
from both sides of the border have called for urgent action to restart following the decision to suspend the project after tenders to complete it came in significantly over
budget. The Chair of Louth County Council, Declan Breathnach, welcomed the decision that there would be no public inquiry. See page 2

are no questions to answer. Dundalk Chamber of Commerce said that “The question of how the cost was so badly underestimated needs to be addressed at a later time.” In County Down representative SDLP member Margart Ritche demanded a meeting with an Taoiseach about it and called on both governments to provide funding for the project. Seamus Kirk Fianna Fail TD asked Transport Minister Leo Varadker about Government
funding for the project and said that issue had been raised with the Taoiseach. “The economic and social impact of the Narrow Water Bridge will transform communities in Louth and Down. It will be an important link and many years have been spent getting the project this far. Louth County Council, public representatives, ministers and officials have all lobbied strongly to get the funding from the Northern Executive for the project. It is uncon-
scionable that the project would fall because of a failure of commitment from the government here,” he said. However some work on the Narrow Water Bridge is continuing a after the revelation last week that Minister for Regional Development (Northern Ireland) Danny Kennedy proceeded with a Bridge Order for the Narrow Water Bridge connecting Louth and Down. Chair of Louth County Council Declan Breathnach said that it was important to continue the statutory approval to continue and that no effort should be spared to keep the project alive. “There is a very robust and carefully thought out rationale for this project and the case for proceeding is arguably stronger in the present economic environment when the positive spinoffs from it would be all the more welcome”, he said.
Fighting broke out on Friday evening between Dundalk FC and Bohemians supporters in the wake of Dundalk’s 3-0 victory over their Dublin rivals in Oriel Park. Two Dundalk men were arrested as fighting broke out 19:49 in and around the car park at Dundalk Train Station. It is thought that a group of Bohemian supporters who were refused entry into the ground waited in the train station until the match finished. As Dundalk supporters passed by the station after the match both sets of fans began to throw glass bottles and fighting quickly broke out before Gardaí arrived on the scene. According to Superintendent John Fahy a female Garda received an injury during the fighting while two Dundalk men were arrested. “The mounted unit and the dog unit were on the scene pretty
quickly as fighting broke out at the train station. Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt but a female Garda did receive some injuries during the attacks. We arrested two Dundalk men at the scene for public order offences”, he explained. Meanwhile the Gardaí have spoken to a man this week
with regards to the circulation of counterfeit €50 notes around the town recently. According to Supt Fahy many of the notes were passed on to a business premises in Dundalk over the last week. The Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry and will speak to the man about the counterfeit money this week.

Man is barred from entering any licensed premises in Louth A judge at Dundalk District Court warned that people on Social Welfare who come before him as a result of drinking to excess are providing an argument for a reduction in the payment. Judge Alan Mitchell made the comments during a case that saw a man banned from enter-
ing a licensed premises for six months. “I have no problem with people drinking but just to excess. It can be used as an argument that Social Welfare should be reduced if people are using it for excess drinking”, stated the judge. The court heard that James Maher of 84 Mul-
laharlan Park, Dundalk, was observed by Gardai in a very drunk state on the street in Mullaharlan Park. He was unable to stand and was taken to the Garda Station. Solicitor Conor MacGuill stated that his client, who is a father of four and on Social Welfare, was close to home when the incident hap-
pened. He was not seeking to excuse the behaviour and apologised. Judge Alan Mitchell imposed a €200 fine a six month exclusion order from licensed premises in Louth. “This means that it is an offence if you are found on a licensed premises in the next six months”, he warned.
UPSTATE Theatre Project is looking for young people aged 16 to 25 from across Louth to take part in a new programme, establishing the Upstate Youth Ensemble and preparing a public performance for the end of the summer. The project will use physical theatre techniques requiring high levels of commitment and fitness, concentration and imagination. Combining this physicality with poignant text devised by the young people taking part, Upstate hopes to forge an exciting new form of performance that is innovative and energising. Anyone with an interest in contemporary music, dance and physical theatre is invited to take part. Even those unsure about committing for the full programme can still take part in the introductory workshop, which will take place on Thursday July 18 in the Town Hall from 2 to 4pm. Following this introductory workshop, members of the Upstate Youth Ensemble will work throughout the summer with experienced Upstate facilitators, devising a public performance for the end of the summer. Participation in the Upstate Youth Ensemble is free, but booking for the introductory workshop is required. To book, or for further information, phone Declan Mallon in Upstate Theatre Project on 041 9844227 or email dmallon@upstate.ie

Over to you QUESTION: Should the Dail bar be closed?
David Connor Yes, they should shut the bar and take the Mercedes off the politicians while they’re at it. The whole country is practically shut down at this stage because of successive governments.
Brendan Kelly I strongly agree that the bar should be closed. The politicians are making enough stupid mistakes already without adding alcohol into the mix.

I don’t mind them staying open as long as they follow the proper licensing regulations that every other pub in the country has to abide by. As my mother used to say it seems to be one rule for the rich and a different one for the poor.
I don’t know about closing it altogether but it should definitely be closed while they are in the chamber making important decisions that affect the country.
It’s a place of work. Of course they shouldn’t be drinking. The bar should be closed during the hours of business in the Dail.
Dundalk Chamber pleased with public retail meeting Dundalk Chamber of Commerce have commended Brian O’Neill from the Dundalk BIDS team for the ‘positive attitude’ shown at last week’s public retail meeting. Chamber PRO Paddy Malone said that the meeting was very welcome given the current crisis facing the retail industry in Dundalk. ‘Dundalk chamber welcomed the positive attitude shown at last week’s public
retail meeting called by Brian O’Neill. We firmly believe that the time for action is NOW. This message was reinforced with the announcement of yet more shop closures last week. Paddy Malone our LEF representative has raised the issue with Padraic White Chair of the LEF and has asked that the retail sector be addressed.” explained Paddy. “This is one of the larg-
est employment sectors in Dundalk. The Chamber is to carry out a survey to identify training and other needs for example on line marketing. Once identified both new and existing courses will be offered to retailers. “We note that several of the ideas called for at the meeting are mirrored in a Chambers Ireland document this week. These include: Reduced/ no parking at school opening and clos-
ing time; Rates reduction for town centres in certain cases; Work with Town council to promote a mix of uses in town centres. “The Chamber will repeat our call to the Government, delivered when the Taoiseach visited Dundalk, in our budget submission which will call for a reduction in VAT. Such a reduction has a positive impact for any border town.” he added.

dalk, we don’t have to scream too loudly to get a good ice cream as there are many great outlets to offer you that moment of pleasure and a chance to cool down. For many of us, icecream is considered one of those ‘can’tlive-without’ treats and the simple fact that it puts a smile on our face is even backed up by scientific re-
search. Yes indeed; for those who view a loaded bowl of icecream, an ice pop or whipped ice cream as nothing short of heaven on earth, the news will come as no surprise that consuming it actually makes people happy. Ice-cream lights up the brain's pleasure zones, according to a study by the Centre of Neuroimaging Sci-
ences at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. The results showed that eating the icecream had an immediate effect on parts of the brain that previous research has shown were activated when someone is really enjoying themselves - the pleasure areas - which include a major processing area at the front of the
brain, the orbitofrontal cortex. The research indicated that eating an ice cream is one of life's pleasures. It's fun to eat and has very positive memory associations with childhood, holidays, sunshine and good times. So, don’t miss the opportunity to put a smile on your face – run out and grab an ice cream today.

Down Syndrome family fun day
Illegal Chinese national appeals sentence
A Chinese national who was living and working in Louth Village illegally has appealed a three-month prison sentence imposed at Dundalk District Court. Shang Chen, with an address at Shang Garden, Main St, Louth Village, pleaded guilty to charges of having no passport, no work visa, no permit and no registration. The court heard that on May 2 this year, Gardai spoke to the defendant in Louth Village. He didn’t have a valid passport or Irish visa, and was unable to produce one on a later date. Solicitor Peter Lavery stated that his 27-yearold client’s only crime was to come and work without documentation, and added that he hasn’t come to the Gardai’s attention otherwise. He appealed for Judge Alan Mitchell not to impose a custodial sentence as he was a person of good character and would turn up in court if the case was adjourned. However, the judge was concerned that he might flee. “The legislation is there to prevent illegal movement and I have to send out a strong message. If he was able to show me a flight ticket I could deal with the case in a certain way but he has had two months since he was arrested and hasn’t made any efforts. He could move to another part of the country. “If he came here with a passport and no visa that would be one thing, but he has no passport so he could be difficult to trace”, he added. After a brief adjournment, Inspector Martin Beggy informed the court that Gardai cannot detain anyone for the purpose of deportation and a Deportation Order could take some time. The defendant would be at liberty during that process. Judge Mitchell expressed a fear that the defendant would leave and imposed a three-month prison sentence on each charge. An appeal was lodged with Wengui Lin, who agreed to provide an independent surety, stating that he had employed the defendant during his time in Ireland.
Getting ready for the Down Syndrome Fun Day in August
A very special Family Fun Day, in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland will take place on Sunday August 4 at the An Grainán Adult Education College. Providing entertain-
ment on the day will be “The Enemies” a Louth based energetic pop/rock band who recently released a new single “Smile” in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. The event starts at Noon and finishes at 6pm and funds raised will go towards Down Syndrome Ireland and the Louth/Meath Branch Other activities include a Teddy Bear’s Picinc, BBQ, HB Ice Cream Party, Bounc-
ing Castle and Face Painting along with plenty of surprises throughout the day. Registration for the fun run is available up to 12:30pm on the day of the event and entry is just €10 per person with all proceeds going to the Down Syndrome Ireland and their Louth/Meath branch. European award for Louth project
An initiative spearheaded in Louth by two Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) research centres has been named as one of the top projects in Europe at an EU awards ceremony for active and healthy ageing practices. The DKIT-based Netwell and Casala research centres are working alongside Louth County Council, University College Cork and others in
what is called the Collaboration on Ageing (COLLAGE). COLLAGE was among 32 initiatives to be named as a “reference site” by the Commission – but one of only 13 to receive the top three-star status. The award was accepted in Brussels by Louth County Manager Joan Martin. EU Commission vice-president Neelie Kroes described the
awards as the “Oscars of innovation for ageing” and stressed that COLLAGE and the other recipient projects were paving the way for a healthier and age-friendly society. “This is fantastic news for County Louth and will see COLLAGE providing professional advice to EU member states and regions for the design of their innovation strat-
egies for smart specialisation and enhancing local ability to access Horizon 2020, Europe’s €70billon flagship research and development programme for 2014-2020,” said Rodd Bond, Director of the Netwell Centre. “Our regional activities in Louth have established a global reputation for leading new ways in service delivery and collaborations on the ground
providing innovative services for older people. “Working alongside our partners in COLLAGE, we aim to play our part in the EU’s aims to increase the average healthy lifespan of Europeans by two years by 2020. “The emphasis now is on scaling up the projects and applying them throughout Europe”, she added.

Dynamites basketball team score memorable win in Spain The Dynamites team pictured with the Santa Susanna Cup
Having competed in Spain over the past ten days and with guest players from around the league, Liby Dynamites Basketball Club made up for their disappointment last year where they lost in the semi finals of The Barcelona Cup to take home the silverware and are now crowned Santa Susanna Champions. Travelling with a senior ladies and under 16

girls team Dynamites are one of the leading clubs in Ireland. It was evident to see the confidence player had gained from last year’s trip to Barcelona as they took to the floor to represent the North East Basketball League and in doing so showed they were a match for and in this case better than any team they had come up against.
Dynamites now take a few weeks off but preparations for the new season will commence shortly with under 12, 14, 16, 18 and senior women’s teams getting under way in August. Anyone wishing to join the Liby Dynamites Basketball Club can do so by visiting www.libydynamites.com. “We would like to thank our coaching staff,
players, committee and parents for their commitment in Dynamites winning this tournament”, said club Chairman Pat Campbell. “To think our club is only in existence three years and we have came third in The Barcelona Cup and now won The Santa Susanna Cup two European Tournaments at under 16 level is amazing”, he added.

New guide aims to put Dundalk on the map By Paul Byrne
Dundalk BIDS in conjunction with the Tourist Office in Market Square are aiming to put Dundalk on the tourist map with the unveiling of an 80 page ‘Dundalk Town Guide’ which they hope will entice tourists to the North East. The booklet will be distributed all over the country and according to Fiona Cunningham from the Dundalk BIDS team the aim is to promote the town of Dundalk and make people aware of the many things the town has to offer. “This is the first booklet of its kind for Dundalk and we are hoping it can put us on the map as a tourist destination. Inside the book, people can find out what to do in Dundalk, where to eat, where to go shopping or where to stay if they plan on spending a few nights here. “This is a huge initiative from Dundalk BIDS and we are very hopeful that people will be tempted to give
Sinead Roche, Eamonn O’Boyle, Fiona Cunningham and Brian O’Neill at the launch of the new guide
Dundalk a try when they see how much we have to offer”, explained Fiona. Over 11,000 copies of the guide were produced as part of the Best of Ireland Series by Southern Marketing Design Media. To date they have produced guides for Limerick City, Kilkenny City and Adare Village. Over half of the content in the guide is dedicated to illustrating the story of Dun-
dalk, past and present – including fun facts and useful information. The rest of the content was shaped after a team of journalists visited the town earlier this year and sampled the finest of what we have to offer. They reviewed various tourism and hospitality providers in the town, and drawing on their own experiences and conclusions, the remainder of the guide was formed.
Sinead Roche from the Dundalk Tourist Office described the guide as a comprehensive guide as to what Dundalk has to offer. “Dundalk has reached another milestone which will help to place us securely on the tourism trail of Ireland. We look forward to distributing the guides to tourist offices and destinations throughout the island of Ireland”, enthused Sinead.
Must have been watching Shameless Dundalk District Court heard a judge comment that a defendant must have been watching ‘Shameless’ after he pleaded guilty to cultivation of cannabis plants. Judge Patrick Clyne referred to the Channel 4 programme after hearing that Darren Lynch of Rosmakea, Knockbridge, was discovered with 32 mature plants, halogen lights and a water system at his home in Shanmullagh, Hackballscross. Solictor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 23-yearold client had no previous convictions and had recently
returned from Australia. He is currently taking driving courses as he has prospects of a job in Canada. He added that the defendant did have a problem with drugs at the time, but no longer has. In describing Mr Lynch as “a silly boy who got caught”, the judge stated that he would deal with the case if a contribution was made to help the community “who can’t afford a bottle of milk let alone a quick fix”. An offer of €1,000 to the Court Poor Box was made and the case adjourned to September 4.
Funding boost
The International Fund for Ireland has announced that it is to donate more than €1.5m to peace building and reconsilliatin projects along the border. More than €900k is going specifically to community groups in Dundalk, Belfast, Derry and Coleraine. The funding will go towards the addressing the most sensitive, complex and challenging issues within areas where there have been low levels of engagement in peace building. Ban for third drink driving conviction A man who was convicted of drink driving for a third time was told that he will have to learn a lesson that he can’t drink and drive and was fortunate that he wasn’t facing a prison sentence. Judge Alan Mitchell sent the warning to Peter Martin of 44 Cherryvale, Bay Estate, Dundalk after he pleaded guilty to the charge after being arrested on November 12 last year. “Some of my colleagues would take the view that a third conviction
would lead to a custodial sentence. It will have to come to the point when you learn a lesson. I appreciate it was a stressful time but you can’t drink and drive”, stated the judge as he imposed a two-year disqualification and €500 fine. The court heard that the 55-yearold defendant’s friend had died the previous night. His solicitor asked to have the disqualification postponed as he had to take his sister to hospital for cancer treatment.

speaking after the shooting said that area was generally a ‘quiet little estate’. Local Fianna Fail Representative John Temple has said that the incident highlights the need for more Garda resources in town. “Garda numbers in Dundalk have dropped again leaving resources much more stretched now than they were before”, he stated after learning of the incident.
Kirk is only Louth TD to vote against abortion bill Last week was a historic moment in the legal and social development of Ireland as the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill was passed ina late night sitting of the Dail. As one of the single most important legislative changes all of County Louth’s TDs were in attendance to debate the 165 proposed amendments before it
went to a vote. It passed 127 votes to 31 and will allow abortion in Ireland in limited circumstances. Every Louth Deputy, with the exception of Fianna Fail’s Seamus Kirk, voted in favour of the bill. Deputy Kirk was free to vote with his conscience as the party whip was not imposed. Peter Fitzpatrick did not
defy Fianna Gael’s party whip and voted in favour of the bill. The 5am finish to the debate attracted much attention but Louth Labour TD Ged Nash stated that this was just part of the job. “The job of a TD requires late night and early morning sittings. That is what we sign up to. Long days and late
nights are not unusual for us in terms of our work.” “I am very pleased that the Labour Party in government has delivered on our long standing commitment to legislate for the X Case. We are the only party in the Dail who have been consistently united on this issue about the lives of women,” he said. The Louth TD also sup-
ports the expansion of the legislation.”I also support calls to advance the case for a referendum in regard to access to safe and legal terminations in Ireland in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest,” he said. The Sinn Fein TD for Louth, Gerry Adams criticised the government’s decision to hold the debates and
vote in the middle of the night, it could have been accommodated on a Saturday for example he said. However, he welcomed the outcome saying that he had “a duty and responsibility to legislate for citizens – in this case pregnant women whose lives are at risk – and to ensure that there is clarity for medical practitioners.”

Pilgrims follow in footsteps of saint
From page 1 “This initiative was inspired by a desire to revive the ancient art of pilgrimage which was so central to the indigenous spiritual traditions of this land. This pilgrimage which honours Brigid goddess and Saint, allowed participants to slow down their pace of life by walking through some of the most beautiful rural towns, villages and countryside of Ireland, to find that place of deep inner peace”, explained Dolores. Louth County Council Cathaoirleach Declan Breathnach, Dundalk Town Council Cathaoirleach Eamonn O’Boyle
Music Generation Summer Camp
The Brigid’s Way pilgrims celebrate their arrival in Kildare
and Michael McCabe were in attendance at the Market Square Dundalk to see the pilgrims commence their nine day journey to Kildare. Declan Breathnach spoke of the wealth of
hidden heritage that Co. Louth has to offer and commended the pilgrims for doing their part to “re-awakening the soul of this county”. Michael McCabe praised Dolores and
Karen for having the vision to organise the pilgrimage and welcomed the walkers who had come from Australia, USA and Denmark to take part in the walk.
Door is opened to the Green Church
THE third event in Dundalk Tidy Towns ‘Open Door Programme’ took place on Saturday July 13 with a visit to St Nicholas (Green Church). The guides for the tour were Mr C Loyd (Church Warden) and Mr N Ross (Old Dundalk Society. The group were given a full tour of the church and adjoining graveyard highlighting the key events in the church’s history. The group were surprised to learn that the building of the church commenced in 1209 and that the
church was originally located at the water’s edge, with the sea reaching right up to the back of the graveyard. At this time there was no Marist Church or St Mary’s Road. The wonderful stained glass window behind the chancel is Dutch glass from the 16th Century, which is the only remaining example of Dutch glass in Ireland. Church Street was where the cow market was held and Clanbrassil Street was known as High Street. Elias Thackeray, brother of writer
William Thackeray, was the vicar from 1803 – 1853. It was known that William visited Dundalk during this time. The graveyard which closed for burials in the 1930’s is full of interesting tombstones including the resting place of Agnes Gault (sister of Scottish poet Robbie Burns) and James Barton the famous Railway engineer who was responsible for the Dundalk-GreenoreNewry Railway. The general comment from those
that attended was how much they had learned and how little they had previously known about the history attached to the Green Church. The remaining tours in the Open Door Programme are as follow: Saturday July 20 – Fire Station – Booked out; Saturday July 27 – Army Barracks – Booked out; Saturday August 3 – Old Gaol; Saturday August 10 – Courthouse; Saturday August 17 – Redemptorist Gardens. TBC – V&W Recycling Centre and Garda Barracks.

Dundalk FC launch community project
Dundalk FC kicked off their ‘Soccer Project’ last week in a move which will see 40 participants aged between 16 and 25 from the Cox’s Demesne and Muirhevnamor regions take part in football related courses that lead to qualifications such as
the FAI Kick Start 1 and 2, FAI Youth Cert, FAI Referees Course, Youth Leadership training and First Aid. The goal of the project is to provide the participants with courses and qualifications where they can go out into
the community and use these qualifications to benefit the town. The stakeholders are Dundalk FC, FAI, Cox’s Demesne Youth & Community linking in Redeemer Celtic FC, Muirehevnamor C o m m u n i t y Council linking in
Muirhevnamor FC and the Community Garda. The soccer element of the courses will be held in Oriel Park and the FAI along with Dundalk FC and the First Team Staff and Players will get involved to help in all aspects of the coaching.
Participants enjoying the Music Generation workshop
Music Generation Louth’s summer programme is in full swing this month with plenty on offer to keep young musicians busy. A great crowd turned up at Bush Post Primary School last week to take part in the first of Music Generation Louth’s rock school workshops with local singer/songwriter Stewart Agnew, guitarist John McIntyre and drummer James Mackin. The day ended with a concert for family and friends and was a terrific success, showing what results can be achieved when working with talented musicians/teachers and having plenty of fun. Rock School continues through July
with workshops at O’Fiaich College, Dundalk on Thursday 18 July and Scoil Uí Mhuiri, Dunleer on Thursday 25 July. Young traditional musicians from all parts of the county also gathered at Bush last week for an inspirational one-day workshop with Louth’s own fiddler Zoe Conway. The group not only enjoyed learning a few new tunes from Zoe but also got the chance to write their very own polka that formed part of the afternoon concert programme. Despite being in much demand these days as guest soloist with orchestras and leading acts both in Ireland and
abroad, Zoe has committed to taking some time out this month to work with young people through Music Generation Louth. Further workshops are planned for 22 July at St Oliver’s Community College, Drogheda and at Music Generation Louth, Chapel St, Dundalk as part of the Dundalk Youth Arts Festival on 1 and 2 August. For further details on Music Generation Louth’s summer programme and other music activities available for children and young people contact: Music Generation Louth, Louth Meath Education and Training Board, Chapel St, Dundalk email: musicgeneration@ louthvec.ie and/or tel 042 93 64635.

Tribute to the great Louis Armstrong
Fans of Louis Armstrong are in for a treat with a special concert entitled “Salute to Satch” in the TLT on September 21. If anyone is qualified enough to play a tribute to Louis Armstrong, Enrico Tomasso is. He started playing the trumpet at age five after listening to Louis play Basin
in the British Jazz Awards. Some recent affiliations have been with American artists, Scot Hamilton, Marty Gross, Dan Barrett, Ken Peplowski, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Bunch and British stars, Acker Bilk, John Dankworth, Chris Barber, Tommy Whittle and the Pizza Express All Stars. He’s left lasting impressions in some of the period style bands: Pasadena Roof
Street Blue on the gramophone. As a famous jazz clarinettist, his father took him to meet many of the American jazz greats when visiting Europe. He met many notable musicians such as Benny Goodman, Roy Eldridge, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Booby Hacket, Billy
Orchestra, Ray Gelato Giants, Alex Welsh Remembered, Keith Nichols Cotton Club Orchestra, Echoes Of Ellington, Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall tribute and the Roy Eldridge roll in the Gene Krupa Big Band Tribute. Enrico is studying and transcribing the music of Armstrong and keeping his spirit alive, on stage.

Butterfield, Maynard Ferguson, the Basie and Ellington Bands amongst many. But by far his biggest inspiration was always Louis Armstrong whom he met and played for, at the age of seven, during Louis’ last visits to England in 1968 and 1969. This led to an instant
bond and friendship which lasted for the remainder of Louis’ life. Louis passed on invaluable advice and encouraged the young protégé by writing to him from the U.S. Of course this alone is no indication of his capability as a trumpet player.
His musical education was the best of both worlds. A high input from his father, who was always writing transcriptions of Louis and other great trumpeters’ solo’s. Also taking him along to play at live gigs and having the best trumpet teachers around. After gradu-
ation from Music College he followed the course that Louis prescribed becoming a great soloist and entertainer in his own right. Nowadays Enrico is considered one of the top jazz trumpeters on the jazz scene and has recently won best trumpet category
Spirit Stock Festival There’ll be dancing on the dock of the bay on July 19 as Daft Punk Tribute Act is set to headline mini festival Spirit Stock 3. The annual event started three years ago when Neil Waters was inspired by an exhibition by Dundalk artist Barry Finnegan. In an effort to see more modern cultural events happen in
the locality. Neil set about getting local musicians together to celebrate the diverse range of musical talents in Dundalk. The event is a celebration of festival favourites past, present and future and fresh new cultural events in Dundalk. Spread over three stages, the mini-fest features an
eclectic mix of local musicians from singer songwriters such as Eugene O’Hanlon to DJ’s such as Mac Attack and Skeletor. A Barbeque will be making sure that the only thing the audience will be hungry for is more music. Spirit Stock takes place Friday July 19 from 6pm in the Spirit Store.

Family fun day
A great day was had by all who attended Pugwash Bay’s Family Fun Day on in the Fairways Hotel. The day marked Pugwash Bay’s 10th anniversary and to mark the occasion presentations were made to various charities for whom money was raised. Owner, Sharon Bell, said she wanted to celebrate this occasion with all her children, parents, friends and colleagues. There was no shortage of activities with everything from face painting, hair and nails, bouncy castles, play areas, outdoor activities as well as performances from Fit Kids, Dynamic Dance Group and Jo Jingles to keep everyone entertained. Each of the five Pugwash Bay crèches held their graduation ceremonies on the stage and they all put on an excellent show.

Twenty two-year-old Diane Curley of 1 Brickfield Close, Dundalk, and 21-year-old Stephanie Curley of 28 Clois Eadha, Dundalk, were
arrested on May 29 at Clanbrassil St where they were very drunk. Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly explained that the women – both mothers of two – had been to hospital in Drogheda when they had a few drinks on the way home. He added that they had more than was good for them and should have
got a taxi home. “They had received good news in relation to their sister and are very embarrassed by their actions. They wish to apologise to the court and the Gardai for wasting their time. You won’t see them in court again and it would be a pity if something like this would blight them
in the future”, he added. Judge Alan Mitchell stated that if each defendant paid €200 to the Simon Community he would dismiss under the Probation Act. “I need to send out a message that there is no problem with drinking, but not too excess”, he added.

Ken bridges gap between past and present Modern day Dundalk connects with its historic past in a major new exhibition by photographer Ken Finegan, called ‘Our Town, My Story’, which has its official opening at the County Museum Dundalk on Friday evening. Ken has chosen over 50 images of Dundalk taken over the years, including the Market Square, the Crescent Garda Barracks, Rawsons and Hallidays factories and the Green Church. His photographs focus on some well known faces at both local and national level, all of whom are linked to Dundalk. Among those featured is Dundalk man, Martin Naughton, of Glen Dimplex who has been pictured in front of Ice House Hill, the park just a few steps from his Laurels home which his Naughton Foundation was heavily involved in renovating and where there now stands a tribute to his father. All the photographs for ‘Our Town, My Story’ are taken as close to the exact location as possible with expert precision. The exhibition has

turned up some fascinating stories, according to Ken, all of which have contributed to the exhibition ‘Our Town, My Story’. “I’ve been looking at Dundalk’s industries, well known buildings and popular locations. The people that are featured in the photographs all have links with the location be it in the past or present. They all have their own memories of the location, and have been sharing their stories and recollections. Some of the stories are amazing and all go to provide a vital piece of Dundalk’s history,” added Ken.
Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, said that that the exhibition has potential for future expansion. “Ken has done some tremendous work for this exhibition. He has spent hours in selecting the most effective older images, then more time trying to find the exact spot from which the image was originally taken. Add to that the time it took to find the right people to include in the photographs, and in some cases, moving them inch by inch into the right spot. “Also, for the first time in the County Museum, we are introducing QR codes on a number
of the exhibition pieces. People can scan the QR code with their phones and have access to interviews with the person in the photograph about their connection with the area.” “Of course as further images come to light in the future there may be the potential to add to the excellent collection Ken already has in place,” added Brian. The exhibition will be officially opened by Tommy Graham, History Ireland on Friday July 19, at 5.30pm in the County Museum, Dundalk and the exhibition will run until the end of August.

Honda has unveiled their Civic Tourer Concept. It gives a firm indication of what the production model will look like when it will be unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year. If the images are anything to go by then Honda should have a hit car – it does look rather good.
The new Honda Civic Tourer has a proposed launch date of early 2014. It will be built alongside the Hatchback model in the UK at Honda’s Swindon plant.
