WHILE Martin Sludden will always be public enemy number one for Louth sports fans, Anthony Buttimer put himself forward as a contender after a performance in the FAI Cup semi final which Stephen Kenny called both ‘a farce’ and ‘a bad day for refereeing in Ireland’. Buttimer’s decision to send off Chris Shields in the 31st minute and award Drogheda a penalty left onlookers scratching their heads as it had appeared that Shields had won the ball before Drogheda’s Declan O’Brien went down in the box. The Cork referee had already provoked anger in the Dundalk ranks having sent off Darren Meenan just four minutes earlier. Shields sending off cou-
pled with Gavin Brennan’s successful penalty attempt left Dundalk with practically no chance of reaching the FAI Cup Final for the first time since 2002. However the nine men produced a heroic performance and almost snatched a deserved equaliser when Tiarnan Mulvenna’s rasping shot was palmed away by Michael Slingerman in the Drogheda goal. Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny was understandably bitterly disappointed and in a pitchside interview in the immediate aftermath of the Shields incident he indicated that he was tempted to bring the players off in protest at Buttimer’s decisions. “The players dedicate their lives to playing here in this league for not very much See page 18

The large attendance at the games included well known GAA commentators, Micheal O Muircheartaigh and Brian Carthy. The occasion continued with a meal in the clubrooms attended by over 400, after which club chairman, Alan Duffy, thanked everyone who had turned up to help make the day so special.
He thanked all who had worked hard in preparation for the day. “It was a very poignant occasion and nice to see so many of the people in Adrian’s life in attendance. Adrian is a huge loss to everyone who knew him and it was good to honour him in this way, but it is something that we shouldn’t have had to do. “It was great to see so many people there and I think everyone left with a smile on their face and fond memories of Adrian”, explained Alan.

Dundalk is set to feature prominently and get a huge tourism boost from the Irish leg of the tour which will take place over three days from May 9 to 11 2014, according to Pat O’Shaughnessy of Cuchulainn Cylcling Club. “An entourage of 3,500 people alone, made up of press and logistics travel with the race. Upwards of 500,000 spectators are expected from all over Ireland and England, Scotland and Wales for the duration of the race, so Dundalk can expect to tap into those figures, and in particular, because of the Intermediate Sprint,” said Pat. A TV advertising package has been put together and a number of local iconic land marks such as Cuchulainn’s Castle will be featured. It is estimated that the TV package will be seen by quarter billion viewers across the globe. As well as the race for the leader Pink jersey passing through the town centre, the riders will be competing in one of the intermediate sprints for a Red jersey which
is awarded to the fastest intermediate sprinter. Cuchulainn Cycling Club initiated the negotiations to secure the passing of the race through Dundalk during the Irish leg. Pat said when he heard there was possibly an Irish leg in the Giro, there were only two people that could bring it here; he contacted them immediately. He said that initially it became apparent that there were three routes proposed, eastern, western and through the midlands. Over nine months Pat and his colleagues pushed hard, got local authorities on board and convinced the organisers to take the eastern route. He said one of the hardest parts was keeping the secret. “We are absolutely thrilled. This is an amazing achievement for our club to bring such an iconic race through Dundalk, and as a result of that, on through Louth. In particular, we are really excited about the Intermediate Sprint for the points as this will pitch the likes of Marcus Kittell, Mark Cavendish and the world’s top sprinters in a battle for the Red jersey to the streets
of Dundalk,” said Pat. The route of the race begins in Armagh via Keady, travels over Keady mountain, then to Newtownhamilton, Lislea, Longfield Rd, and into Louth on the Carrickasticken Road, on its journey past Forkhill, into Kilcurry and joining the R177 Armagh Road, onto Lisdoo and into Dundalk Town Centre. It will be leaving Dundalk, as it travels through Castlebellingham and, Drogheda, then on to Dublin.

Retracing the path of history
A local historian, Cuchulainn Cycling Club and local Army personnel have joined forces to plan a celebration of one of Dundalk’s most historic and unique sporting events. With the assistance of a local antiques collector, the group are organising an event to recreate a cycling ‘time-trial’ that took place from the military barracks to the Market Square almost 200 years ago. The idea was inspired by historian, Pat O’Neill, through his book, ‘The Journal of Hentry McClintock’. The entry from Oc-
tober 23, 1819, outlines the event which saw George Foster cycle to the Market Square on a velocipede or boneshaker, in just under eight minutes. Kevin Dolan discovered the event when compiling “Dundalk – A Cycling History 1819 to 2010”, and after discussing the matter with colleagues decided to do something the mark the anniversary. “We just thought it was a great event and something we should recognise and fortunately thanks to Paddy Whyte we have access to a similar bike to the one used
almost 200 year ago”, revealed Kevin. “It is not for another six years but we just wanted to put the process in motion so we will be organised for the anniversary. “It is planned to have a time trial on the 200th anniversary when a selected rider will set off on the velocipede. We plan to have riders on a selection of bikes from different periods in history setting off at one minute intervals, which will illustrate the advances made over the years. “Hopefully the person on the velocipede does it in
less than the eight minutes achieved by George Foster as part of a bet. The official launch of the event took place on Thursday last at Aiken Barracks. The extract from Henry McClintock’s journal reads: Saturday October 23rd, 1819: Fine day – Geo Foster rode on a velocipede from the Barrack yard to the Market House in Dundalk in three seconds under eight minutes, winning his wager (that he had made with Colonel Teesdae of the 1st Dn.Gds.) by three seconds only – he started at about half past ten in the morning.
A man who was very upset following an attack on his uncle expressed his gratitude to the Gardai despite the fact that they arrested him on public order charges. Gardai had been alerted by a concerned family member on August 14 this year and when they saw Barney McGinley of 17 College Heights, Hoeys Lane, in the vicinity of Williamson’s Place, they asked him to leave. He refused to do so and was arrested and charged with threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to comply with the direction of a Garda. The court heard that there was a family feud ongoing at the time. Solicitor for the defendant, Dermot Monahan, stated that his client’s uncle had suffered a horrific attack which left him permanently disfigured. He added that a knife had been plunged into his chest and just missed his heart. He was very close to his uncle. Mr Monahan pointed out that his client was glad that the Gardai had intervened. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine in respect of each offence.

The conflict between Eastern and Western cultures inspired this well-loved musical, which has been revived professionally many times and is always a firm favourite with the public. The score The Children. includes the wonderful and well known songs "I Whistle a Happy Tune", "Hello Young Lovers", "Getting to Know You", "Something Wonderful" and "Shall We Dance?" Budding bee enthusiasts awarded certificates By Niamh Kirk
The growing interest in beekeeping was illustrated recenlty when Louth beekeepers welcomed 20 new members to their group and also took the opportunity to celebrate the unexpected recovery of
their colonies after massive losses in the wake of last year’s prolonged winter. Last week the Louth Beekeepers Association awarded 20 budding bee enthusiasts with their Bee Keeping Certificates. The students began their course in January and
over the past nine months have been as busy as their subjects learning about how to develop and sustain hives and colonies. Some of the new keepers also took part in the first ever Louth honey show, which almost didn’t happen. Bee-keepers the world over suf-

fered catastrophic losses to their colonies this year with some losing as much as 80% of their hives. The winter of 2011/2012 was exceptionally wet which was followed by a prolonged winter. Bees which traditionally come out of hibernation in March were met with very cold and wet conditions and many did not survive. Hopes for a successful honey crop this year were not high. “Going into the summer we expected the worst. They did very badly through the winter, we stated the year with huge losses of bees because we had two years of disaster,” explained Tom Shaw the Louth Beekeeper club secretary. However, the prolonged summer sun boosted the bees’ activity and stimulated a turnaround in
their fortunes. Mr Shaw who had lost many of his bees saw the population recover by 50% and restored much of his colony. Not only did the good weather bring a relief to the bee population but bee keepers also saw unexpected yields in the honey crop. Mr Shaw explained that beekeepers can focus on two areas, the honey crop or the expansion of the colony into new hives. Following catastrophic losses, the bee keepers decided to focus on development of hives. “The expectation was we would have a very bad crop of honey. But the weather decides everything and the summer was fabulous so a lot has rectified. We were expecting more losses to bees and little honey but we ended up with more
than expected”, he said. The Louth Beekeepers also welcomed the coming two-year EU ban on neonicotinoids pesticides which begins this December. The pesticides are considered to be a major factor in the cause of colony collapse disorder which is not only pushing beekeepers out of business, but is also impacting on the foods we eat and their prices. Almonds would not exist if not for bees’ pollination, and 90% of apples, broccoli, blueberries and many other fruits and vegetables would die off if not for bees. In order to have a group prepared for the emergence of bees this March and the splitting of hives to expand colonies in May, Louth Beekeepers will be begin a new course in January.

Bridge project enters a critical phase The Narrow Water Bridge project is entering a critical phase with the Government said to be ready to consider a proposal from Louth County Council to secure more funding for the planned construction. Local TD, Seamus Kirk, has been told that Transport Minister Leo Varadkar will consider the proposal after he queried junior transport minister, Jan OSullivan in the Dail last week about the chances of further government support for the bridge. Deputy Kirk was told that the main organisations pushing the bridge, Louth County Council, Newry and Mourne Council, the East Border Region and
Newry and Mourne District Council, must put together a proposal, but soon. Deputy Kirk was advised that provided that NI government agreed to make a further donation the Irish Government too would consider giving more money to the project. A large part of the funding for the project would be provided by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) fund INTEREG, to the sum of €17.4 million euro. But more than half will have to come from other sources. The Irish Government has already pledged €3.9 million while the NI Government planes to give more than €3m. Initially the project manager
estimated that the bridge would cost €18.3 million to build. But when the project went to tender it was revealed that it had been considerably underestimated and a further €15m would need to be found if it was to go ahead. The availability of the €17.4m INTERREG funding however is not indefinite and the money will be withdrawn if the project does not look like it will get further financial support. In the lead up to the budget 2014 which is due to be finalised in the next two weeks, the Transport Ministers have said they are open to injecting further funding. SEUPB have asked for
further information from the project leaders in order to gauge the feasibility of the project going forward and whether an extension to the funds availability is appropriate. Speaking about the preparation of the transport budget Jan O Sullivan said that as yet no formal proposal has been made by Louth County Council to the Department of Transport. The following comments to Deputy Kirk however were not hope inspiring. She noted that the Department of Transport have had to curtail investment on all major projects in recent times in order to focus available funds on necessary maintenance and repair work.
Community joins together in celebration By Niamh Kirk
The Lios Dubh Community Group held a day of celebration of culture in their area on Friday last. The effort began in earnest three months ago when one of the driving forces, Kayleigh Mulligan, saw an opportunity to have a series of events in her community funded. She jumped at the chance and began a project that aimed to bring families from different cultural backgrounds in the Lios Dubh
Kayleigh Mulligan, Tinu Achioyn, Tayo Raji
community together. Over the summer months local children took part in hip-hop dance classes and puppet show workshops, meanwhile their parents were learning jewellery design, art and craft. An ex-
hibition of all their work was held and the whole community were invited along to celebrate. The project organisers said that the workshops were a resounding success. “Everyone got a lot out
of it. The kids had great fun and the integration aspect of the project really worked. There were people that would know each other only to see, but now they’re good friends,” said Kayleigh. The projects were held in conjunction with the Louth Ethnic Minority Consortium and funded by Peace III. Chair of Dundalk Town Council Eamonn O’Boyle who launched the days celebrations praised Kayleigh for her efforts to get the project going and creating a

Letter to the editor
Is bridge a waste of money? Dear Editor,
I have been intrigued in the past weeks by the amount of column inches of your newspaper that has been devoted to the Narrow Water Bridge project. Everybody appears to agree, that it is a great idea, maybe it is. But in our present straitened financial circumstances should the Louth
County Council have such a cavalier attitude towards spending €16 or €40 million, or maybe more, on such a luxury item? Is it the most intelligent way to dispense with our meager resources? How can they morally justify borrowing €2,000,000 thus imposing a burden of €15,000 per month on already over-taxed local tax-payers for the next 15 years? The proposers of this imposition are comfortably of council officials and politicians, who will not have to worry about, whether they will have enough money for, heat and light or food for their family in the winter ahead. Then of course it might be a
last “Hooray” for many of them, to boost their egos, before they ride of into the sunset in their Golden Chariots. On the other hand, if one is to judge from the non-reaction of your readers to the project, it can only be assumed that your readers fully support these officials and politicians and are quite happy with this waste of our sparse resources, being a priority. P.S. Maybe it should be named “The Pie in the Sky Project” Yours, Pat McKenna, Feede, Mountpleasant.
space where people can get to know each other. “It is astonishing to see what can be achieved in such a short time”, said Mr O’Boyle. He finished by congratulating all those involved and said, “Long may it continue, and long may it prosper”, he added. Tinu Achioya said that the members of the community had discovered all the things that they have in common and that the project had brought a sense of community and friendship to the area.

Darts revival continues at pace By Paul Byrne
Darts is enjoying something of a renaissance lately with the Dundalk and District Darts League in particular showing an impressive surge in numbers playing the game. This Thursday in the Avenue Inn at 8pm sees the launch of this season’s league and according to County PRO John O’Brien interest in the
league has reached new heights this year. “People have always said that darts is a recession sport because it’s so cheap to be a part of. That has proved to be true with numbers playing the game here in Dundalk increasing every year over the last few seasons. We have our launch night tomorrow evening in the Avenue Inn and we will have 24 teams of ten
players playing in three divisions which is an impressive number of darts players” explains John. “We’ve just signed a three year sponsorship deal with Tuborg and obviously that’s a great boost for us to have that level of backing behind us. “The league is kicking off on October 17 and there will be 15 different pubs around the town
20%
involved so we’re looking at three competitive divisions in what will be a great season for the league”, added John. Today darts is one of the biggest commercial and sporting successes even in these tough economic times we are currently living in. Dundalk is no exception to the boom in darts and with 240 players stepping up to the oche for the new season.

These photos provide a glimpse
Kenneth Myles, DDG (Dundalk Deaf Group) committee, Corinne Kilkenny chairperson DDG, Rory McGee DDG committee, Caitriona McCaughey DDG committee, Cllr Jennifer Green and Susan Myles
of the beauty of ISL through the eyes of the celebrities, who each sign a letter of the ISL alphabet. The aim of the exhibition is to encourage public awareness and appreciation of one of only two unique lrish languages. ISL is the native language of

Setanta Choir set up school bursary By Niamh Kirk
Setanta Choir who are celebrating their 35th year in Dundalk this year are giving something back to the community where they started. The choir are offering local schools the chance to get a bursary worth €2,000 in a bid to develop and promote Choral singing in the area. The competition is open to all Primary and Post Primary Schools in the Dundalk Town Council area who already have a tradition of choral singing. The aim of the funding and development of school choirs is to expand choral singing in the area. The winning school choir will also get over two years from professional voice coach, opera singer and full- time tenor with the National Chamber Choir of Ireland for the last 10 years, Alan Leech, and will also get to perform with the Setanta Choir at one of their annual concerts. Setanta say they are delighted to
have Alan on board and know that he will bring a wealth of experience to the project. Last year the members of the Setanta Choir worked with the Dun Lughaidgh choir. The felt the collaboration was very successful and they began to feel that there was enormous value in promoting choral singing among young people, so they came up with the bursary. The Setanta Choir say that joining choirs help develops young people’s singing ability and enhances musical abilities. Also, singing together help develop concentration, teamwork and creativity. County Arts Officer, Brian Harten, said, “This partnership with Setanta is both an investment in the future and a way for children to experience the pure joy of singing together. We have worked with, and supported Setanta’s work in the past, and this partnership is one which has great potential.”

Wanted to escape ‘torture’ by individuals in Muirhevnamor but felt worse after the beating. However, he added that his unemployed client was in a better place since this incident. Mr McDonnell stated that the facts as presented should be enough to suggest that the tablets were not for sale or supply. However, Judge Flann Brennan did not agree and stated that the evidence was consistent with the charges alleged, and that the explanation given was not sufficient. He adjourned the case until November 8 for a Probation Report.

Staff member stole from restaurant till
A man who pleaded guilty to two sample theft charges from a restaurant was convicted and fined €100 and ordered to pay €2,000 compensation. Sami Gueddes of Cormorant St, Aston Village, Drogheda, had already paid compensation of €1,250 arising out of the offences on October 6 and 7, 2010, at The Foodhouse, Clanbrassil St. Insp Martin Beggy revealed that the proprietors noticed irregularities in till voids and further investigation revealed that up to €10,000 may have been involved, although this figure is contested. He added that between €5,000 and €10,000 was unaccounted for.

Geraldines celebrate on the double News in Brief Signing Class
Insp Beggy said that the process involved payment being taken and then the transaction voided. Solicitor for the defendant stated that other members of staff had access to the till and that is why the figure is disputed, although it was stated by the prosecution that nobody else was under investigation. The solicitor pointed out that his client had paid compensation but has no more funds. The father of two is unemployed and finding it hard to get work. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €100 fine and ordered payment of €2,000 compensation on one charge, while striking out a second.

Byrne hoping to make squad to face Aussies
LOUTH Village man Ciaran Byrne woke up to good news on Tuesday morning as it was announced that he had been named in the provisional Ireland panel for the October International Rules series against Australia. Ciaran made waves last year putting in a number of match winning performances
for his club St Mochtas while he burst on to the County scene this year when he scored a goal against Antrim in just his debut championship season. On the back of a successful trial two years ago Byrne was scouted by Aussie Rules side Carlton and eventually put pen to paper to sign a two year deal with the
club which will begin in 2014. Byrne will become Louth’s second player after Paddy Keenan to be picked for the International rules side if he is given the chance by manager Paul Earley to strut his stuff in the forthcoming October 19 clash at Breffni Park and the October 26 clash at Croke Park.
The talk will be given by Barbara O’Flaherty and all are welcome.

Man banned for three years A 30-year-old Omeath man was disqualified from driving for three years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court. Michael Traynor of
Tullagh, Omeath, was observed by Gardai driving erratically on the Newry Rd at 2.40am on May 17, 2012. A blood sample was taken and revealed that he was over the legal
limit for driving. The court heard that the defendant who had a previous drink driving conviction in Newry, and solicitor, Paul McArdle, stated that he apologised to the court.
He added that his client is a mature student at Queens University. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine and postponed the disqualification until December 1.

Woman disqualified for three years
A Dundalk woman was disqualified from driving for three years after admitting a drink driving charge. Donna McEvoy, 69 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, was also fined €250 after being arrested following an accident at Blackrock Road Marshes South on September 19. The court heard that the defendant didn’t see the brake lights on the car in front and crashed into the rear of the vehicle. A sample revealed that she was over the limit for driving. She also pleaded guilty to a careless driving charge. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his 35-year-old client is a lone parent of four children and relies on social welfare. All damage had been paid for.
Jake Clemons for Store Jake Clemons, nephew of the late Clarence Clemons has spent much of the past 15 years touring with The Israelites, The Swell and most recently with Bruce Springsteen’s long time backing band, the E Street Band. The multi talented musician is one of it’s hardest working members - playing guitar, saxophone, piano and drums. Jake has also performed with The Roots, and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder Now Jake is branching out and is taking his own show to the Spirit Store this December 5.
Jake is pitched somewhere between the grittiness of Johnny Cash and the dynamic rock of his boss, The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. Jake is from the American leg of his tour to play in Ireland, including the Spirit Store. “I need to be able to engage people; that’s where I flourish,” said Jake. And it shows as his shows are sell-outs as audiences lap up the mix of melody and hard rock. But they do not have long as Jake is lined-up to back on tour with the E Street Band in the new year.

Boxing Club’s 75th anniversary By Paul Byrne
Dealgan Boxing Club’s 75th anniversary celebrations proved to be a hugely successful affair with a full house in attendance for the famous old clubs night out in the Fairways. The Dealgan boxing club was formed in 1938 and has had many homes around the town before settling into their current Marian Park base 20 years ago. The club has proved to be a wonderful breeding ground for developing the very best boxing talent from around the town. PRO for the club Anto Donnelly was understandably delighted with how the evening panned out and thanked everybody who helped make it such a success. “We had our Gala Boxing Dinner Show which took place on Saturday evening in the Fairways Hotel Dundalk and we were delighted with the amount of people who came out and helped make it such a great evening. “I’d like to thank all who supported us in the Fairways Hotel, it was a very successful and enjoyable night but we couldn’t have done it without the people who put their hands in their pockets and attended, I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did”, noted Anto. “Bernard Dunne came along
John and Rebecca Kirwin, Stephen Campbell and Lydia Luciano at the Dealgan BC celebrations in The Fairways Hotel
and he was an absolute gentleman all night signing autographs and getting pictures taken without any fuss at all. We had 14 fights on the evening and they were all really good competitive affairs. It was nice to show the people who support us throughout the year what we’re all about and I’d like to thank all the sponsors who came up trumps for us yet again. Double European champion Amy Broadhurst has had a spectacular year in the ring and she was awarded on the night with the Joe Ashmore Memorial Trophy for ‘Best Boxer of the night’ for her magnificent victory against
Shayanne O’Neill in what was the fight of the night. Conor Woods and Sean O’Donagh were joint winners of the ‘Eddie Maguire Memorial Shield’ which is awarded to the best club boxer of the year recognising their dedication and hard work in the club. Nicole Agnew was awarded th Willie Moore Shield for the best technical boxer and was presented with her award by former world champion Bernard Dunne. The club are now looking forward to 2014 where they will continue promoting fitness and good values to all members.

t is the time of year when people are beginning to make plans for their office Christmas party. For many it is one of the highlights of the year, but there can be some pitfalls. Here are some do’s and don’ts of office Christmas party etiquette aimed to keep your job, reputation and dignity in one piece. Do attend. Your office party is not an optional event. Even if you despise the thought of spending a whole evening with the people you work with every day, it’s a good idea to make an appearance. It shows that you are part of the team. Don’t dress inappropriately. And do dress professionally. The venue will determine the dress code so make sure you know what it is. “Women are advised to stay away from slinky dresses, low-plunging necklines, short-short skirts or tight-fitting trousers”, according to workplace
etiquette expert Pamela Holland. And, men “should refrain from unbuttoning more than two buttons on their shirts and wearing overly fitted shirts that show off their muscles”. Do some schmoozing. This is a good time to talk to people you wouldn’t normally come across and, of course, the boss. This could help you in the long term in terms of forging alliances, helping to get things done or just raising your profile. But... ... Don’t talk shop. Do you want to be seen as the office bore? The office party gives you the chance to get to know people as people not just ‘Julie from accounts’. Do drink in moderation. Excessive drinking is the
number one cause of office party ‘incidents’. Remember, it is a marathon not a sprint and it is likely that you will have a long evening ahead of you. But, by the time you realise this you may have already consumed enough alcohol to sink a battleship and not quite be with it. Stick to your limit, drink slowly or alternate between alcohol and water and, if it’s too late for that, then switch to soft drinks and mince pies. And resist the temptation to indulge in tequila shots or flaming drambuie or you may end up losing more than your inhibitions. Don’t make a move on a colleague. After a few hours and a few beers even Barbara from credit control can look like a goddess. But, before you make a bee-line for the person you’ve had your eye on all year, do yourself a favour, stay put and think, ‘Is this a good idea?’ ‘Probably not’, is the likely answer.

Do watch your language. Remember the reason why you are at the Christmas party in the first place is because you have a job. Avoid saying things you wouldn’t say on a normal office day. Don’t leave too soon. Tequila slammers with the girls from HR may be more appealing than your department’s party. But, unless you have made a holy show of yourself, stay for at least a couple of hours even if it is the most boring party ever. After all, it’s your boss that you need to impress when it comes to getting a promotion. Above all, enjoy the party. Strive to be remembered for the right reasons and not for your lustful antics or David Brent dancing. And, in the words of the great man himself from “The Office”, when asked how he would like to be remembered, he replied: “Simply, as, the man who put a smile on the face of all who he met.”

Colaiste Lu literacy scheme This week saw the start of an exciting new literacy scheme in Coláiste Lú, Dundalk’s brand new gaelcholáiste. The ‘Stop! Bí ag Léamh!’ scheme sees all students and teachers dropping everything for five minutes every day to read. As a pivotal part of the school’s literacy policy the scheme encourages all students to choose a book or article that captures their interest and to read for pleasure at least once a day. So far the scheme has been a great success and some students and teach-

who are not avid readers have been engrossed in their chosen books during reading time. It’s all about encouraging reading for reading’s sake and we are already seeing the benefits of the scheme,” said In Mhic Eochaidh, English teacher at Coláiste Lú. Louth votes to keep Seanad By Niamh Kirk
Last Friday 33% of the Louth electorate had their say on the 32nd and 33rd Referenda and voted to retain the Seanad and to set up a Court of Appeal. It was the Seanad Referendum that had attracted much of the attention in the preceding weeks and was the main focus in the Louth count centre in Redeemer Resource Centre. Some local voting constituencies did vote in favour of the Seanad abolition, Carlingford and Laytown who voted to support for the 32nd referendum, however, most voted to reject the Government’s proposal. The margin was low and in many cases there were fewer than ten votes in the difference. Turnout at the polls was low in Louth as it was nationwide. There was a flurry of excitement on Saturday morning in the count centre as councillors, TDs and Senators stood by the sidelines watching the ballots being counted. There were no official tally teams so sharp-eyed volunteers recorded the votes from random boxes as
they were being counted. While the ‘No’ vote stayed ahead by a narrow margin from early morning, it was too close to call until the final result was announced. In numbers, 20,067 voted to keep the Seanad, while 18,278 voted to scrap it. There were 393 spoiled votes. Senator Mary Moran who publically broke the Labour Party whip and said that she was voting ‘no’ was delighted with the result. Speaking before votes were cast she said that she would not have taken the job in the Seanad if she thought she would not be in a position to make an impact. “Personally I was bowled over on a personal basis for the amount of people who called or emailed me in support for a second chamber,” she said. “I hope that this is not the end of the referendum, it is start of a new direction and the debate for reform. I will be calling for an urgent a meeting with Enda Kenny to let him know that he has to listen to what the people want.” Green Party councillors Mark Dearey and Mary Kavanagh
welcomed the result describing it as a unique opportunity for politics to turn itself around and regain the respect of the electorate. This week many of the parties came out defending their bids to abolish the Seanad. On Morning Ireland this week Louth TD and Sinn Fein Party Leader Gerry Adams defended their ‘equality not elitism’ campaign to see the Seanad abolished. He said that given his party’s policies they had no choice but to campaign as they did and that he does not regret it. Senator Jim D’Arcy says that the Taoiseach was right to put the JOY OF BEING CHAMPIONS: Young musicians Kerri-Ann McArdle, Rachel Connolly and Áine Scott show question to the people and it THE off the cup at the Comhaltas Craobh Dhún Dealgan party in the Oriel Centre to celebrate the branch’s sucstimulated a lot of debate on the cess at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann All three are members of the All Ireland winning Under 12 Music Group. issue. Rage over cup farce From page 1 reward, I think the level of professionalism is very, very high and then you come to the day and it’s just a farce,” he said. “It was a travesty really as this would have gave this brilliant group of players a chance to play in their national stadium which Dundalk as a club have only ever got the chance to do once before. Unfortunately we are talking about Anthony Buttimer yet again. He seems to court controversy all the time”, added Kenny. “We’re going to have to get on with things now and dust ourselves down and get ready for Bohemians this weekend. We need to make
sure we finish off this season strongly and win our remaining matches”, concluded Kenny. Buttimer also sent off fitness coach Graham Byrne and assistant manager Vinnie Perth to compound Dundalk’s anger and frustration. Dundalk FC released a statement on Monday evening indicating that they will be contacting the FAI over Sunday’s incidents while congratulating the team on their wonderful achievements this season. The statement is as follows: We have all come a long way in the past 14 months. Collectively, the supporters, players, coaches, backroom staff, officials, volun-

teers and sponsors have turned the club around from a team fortunate to survive relegation in 2012 to a team that has qualified for the Europa League with three games remaining and still has a chance of winning the title. All of our disappointment resulting in Sunday’s events must been seen in this context. The club has worked incredibly hard with scant resources this year. It is understandable that given the level of commitment shown by the players and staff all season that they should be extremely disappointed at the circumstances surrounding our semi-final defeat.
