Two local Gardaí were fortunate to escape serious injury after their patrol car was rammed while trying to stop a van on the M1 Motorway on Sunday night. Such was the damage to the official vehicle that the two Blackrock-based Gardai had to be cut free by the fire service. Both Gardaí were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital; the first Garda who had been in the passenger seat was discharged on Monday morning. The second who had been in the driver’s seat suffered head injuries but was discharged some time afterwards. The incident took place on the M1 motorway near,
Junction 17, the Castlebellingham turn off at about 8.45 on Sunday night. The Dundalk traffic corps had observed a Ford Transit Van travelling at high speed heading north on the motorway. The Blackrock based Gardaí responded to the call about the speeding van and were in an official Garda vehicle when it was rammed, causing it to spin out of control and collide with the road side barrier near the Castlebellingham turn-off. The white van failed to stay at the scene and continued on course. Gardaí are now seeking to identify its whereabouts. The road was closed for Continued on Page 2

cording to his mother, Martina, he was inspired to record a CD after suffering three heartbreaking family losses over the past couple of years. “Jamie absolutely loves music and he wanted to record a CD for charities close to our heart following the recent deaths of his Grandad to cancer, his aunty to suicide and his brother who died when just ten years old”, explained Martina. “Jamie was determined to do something to remember them all by and he decided to release a CD of some of his favourite songs. We found a recording studio in Killanny last summer where he recorded an eight track CD with songs by Coldplay,
Oasis and Bruce Springsteen. The CD is called ;’Footprints’ and is available for €10 with all proceeds divided between the three chosen charities. “Myself and Jamie’s dad Raymond are extremely proud of Jamie and we think it’s a huge achievement for a young fellow. We’d also like to thank Jamie’s guitar teacher Paul Finn from The Flaws”, added Martina. News Firefighter Fashion in Brief Inferno will be hot stuff Historical Society
By Paul Byrne
The Firefighters Fashion Inferno charity evening is shaping up to be the hottest ticket in town as the Dundalk firefighters get ready to strut their stuff in the Lisdoo next month. All proceeds from the evening will go to ‘The Niger Fire Engine Project and Plan Ireland’ which aims to acquire emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances to one of the poorest countries in the world. Brendan McCoy who is involved in the project is looking forward to the big night and hopes that the people in town will come out and support the event which takes place on March 28 in the Lisdoo. “We are working hard getting everything ready for what will undoubtedly be a great night in the Lisdoo. There will be a fashion show during the first half of the show with firefighters modelling clothes generously supplied by Tony McDonnell menswear”, explained Brendan. “During the second half of the show we’ll have a Firefighter Calender Guy section with a

couple of professionals coming down to strut their stuff. We’ll also be picking Mr Firefighter 2014 with the help of the ladies and gentlemen in the audience. It’s all for a very worthy cause so hopefully we’ll get a good crowd on the night”, he added. While the Firefighter Fashion Inferno night aims to entertain there is also a serious element to proceedings with all proceeds going to The Niger Fire Engine Project in association with Plan Ireland. Plan Ireland, the international children’s development charity, is once again on a mission to send two more fire engine to West Africa to the province of Zinder in Niger. Although two and a half times the size of
Ireland, the area has just one fire engine to service a population of 2.4 million and was delivered in March 2011. Niger the second poorest country in the world is often affected by severe drought, famine and flooding. In times of drought fire engines are essential and life saving, literally bringing assistance to the people. In doing so this allows children to attend schools, especially girls, as they are the water carriers for their families. In February 2011, Brendan was part of a five strong team which transported the fire engine now known as the Gilley Ray, 800km by road to the City of Gaya. The total cost of shipping and transporting was in the region of
€28,000, and Plan Ireland hopes to raise enough to cover the cost to deliver two more engines donated by Monaghan Fire and Rescue Service and also enable their teams to train Niger Fire staff in the use and maintenance of these machines. The Firefighter fashion inferno takes place on Friday March 28 starting at 8pm. There will be finger food and spot prizes on the evening followed by a disco. Over to you Question: Are Croke Park residents right to feel aggrieved over five Garth Brooks concerts?
Eileen Woodcock As a Garth Brooks fan I’m going to have to say no they’re wrong. The man is coming over here and creating great excitement for his many fans. I think they can put up with a bit of noise for five nights.
Katie McGuinness I think they are right as five nights to me is a bit much to have to put up with all those crowds. I think they should have capped it at three.
Kieran Pickering
Eimear Keenan
Laura Horgan
I can see where they are coming from but threatening to take the promoters to court is an over-reaction. The concerts are going to generate a lot of income for businesses around the area and that has to be a good thing.
Yeah, I think they are right. Unfortunately when you have that many people going through an area you’ll always get a few that will cause damage to peoples homes or get sick in their gardens.
I think if the five nights do go ahead then the residents should be compensated in some way for the inconvenience of it all. Five nights in a row is a lot especially if access roads etc are closed off.
Quartet aim for Shave or Dye world record From Page 1
Last year the boys entered the Guinness Book of World Record as part of the ‘Most Mohawks in One Place’ with 257 people in total turning up as part of Today FM’s Shave or Dye campaign which
is now in it’s fifth year. Aidan and his pals have been involved with Shave or Dye since 2012 raising thousands of euro for the Irish Cancer Society as well as many local charities. This year the main event will be held on March 16 in the Lis-
doo as ten local men get their heads shaved on the night. It promises to be a great evening’s entertainment according to Aidan who is calling for people to support the group’s efforts. “We’ve been doing this since 2012 and we’ve
had great craic doing it while also making a few euro for charity. People have been very generous over the years and hopefully they’ll support us again this year. “Four of us are heading to Dublin on Friday to get our heads shaved as part of Today FM’s world record attempt and then early next month ten more lads will get their hair dyed before getting it all shaved off at our fundraiser in the Lisdoo”, explained Aidan. “The 10 men set to also take part in the Shave or Dye event include Ian Phelan, Martin Murphy, Derek Malone, Donal Byrne, Shane Browne, Stephen Hoey, Martin Gill, Darren Taaffe, Sean Dixon and John Thornton. €7,400 for the Irish Cancer Society from the sponsor cards alone. As well as that money raised on the night provided three Ipads for the stroke
rehab unit in the Louth County Hospital and €4,420 for the Southern Area Hospice Services, making up a massive total of €13,120.
Man is trying to turn his life around A man who admitted a number of offences at Dundalk District Court is trying to turn his life around after making efforts to deal with alcohol and substance addictions. Stephen Stanfield of 31 St Olivers Park, Kilsaran, Castlebellingham had the case against him adjourned until May 7 for a Probation Report. The court heard that on June 27 last year following an altercation at the fam-
ily home, the defendant was asked to leave by Gardai. However, he returned a short time later and when asked to leave he told Gardai to ‘F off’. He was very drunk and was subsequently arrested under the public order act. On October 2, 2012, at DkIT the defendant encountered two couples who had left a house party. He tried to get into their company but they tried to get rid of him. He then ran up and punched one man and
knocked him to the ground. He then remonstrated with another man and hit him on the nose. On July 22, Gardai came across the defendant on a bike travelling from Castlebellingham to Kilsaran. He was under the influence of an intoxicant and when searched under the drugs act, two knives were found. He stated that he had them for his own protection. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that his client, who had

25 previous convictions, committed the offences shortly after he had finished a prison term. He added that the defendant hadn’t come to the notice of Gardai since and that he had stopped drinking and taking the substances he was addicted to. Mr MacGuill added that in light of information that had come to light about Mr Stanfield, the court may be assisted by a Probation Report, and Judge Hamill put the case back to May 14.

Drug related offences too have fallen slightly in the two year period as have the number of harassments and assaults.

I’m just happy to be going down with the team and enjoying the occasion” noted Alex. “I really enjoy swimming and I’ve been fortunate enough to represent my country on a number of occasions over the years. Swimming is such a great sport as it keeps you fit and healthy and is great for the circulation”, enthused Alex. Mary McElroy who is chairperson as well as coach for the Dundalk Special Olympics team is also looking forward to
the trip but says that the next few months will be spent fundraising to ensure all the athletes make it down to Limerick. “The games are a wonderful occasion for everybody and we are all looking forward to it. There are 12 athletes, three coaches and three one-to-one carers going down, which is 18 in total. For each of those 18 we need to raise €500 which all adds up to €9000. Obviously it’s not easy in this day and age to raise that amount of money but we’ve been working hard since before Christmas and we’re all determined to get it done”, insisted Mary.
“We are holding a night at the dogs on March 1 and we’d all be very grateful if people come along and help us raise much needed funds. If you buy the tickets directly from us we get a portion of the money which will be used to send our athletes to Limerick. So hopefully people will come out and support us on the 1st of March”, urged Mary. As well as the night at the dogs the Dundalk Special Olympics committee are organising a pub quiz in Byrnes on Hill St on February 20. For information contact Mary on 087 2926569 or 9377395.

Hoping to make impression on fashion world By Aine Thistleton
Local students will be hoping to make an impression on the world of fashion when they take part in the Eastern heat of the popular Junk Kouture competition. Junk Kouture is an annually-held, national competition for second level students throughout Ireland with the aim of creating wearable outfits
from everyday recyclable materials. A number of schools will be represented by the entries which include, ‘Harvest Queen’ a dress made from bamboo and modelled by Claire Keenan from St Vincent’s, ‘Make-up Madness’ modelled by Maria MacArtain from the Bush and constructed from various elements of make-up sets and ‘Christmas Apoca-
lypse’ made from broken toys and modelled by Estera Patriubavicuite from the Marist. Also entering the competition are ‘Electrifying’ modelled by Nicola Bolton from the Bush and constructed from electrical wires and plugs, and ‘In Vino Veritas’ a dress made from cork and modelled by Chiara Mischo from St Vincent’s. Of course, many other
outfits will be entering from schools around Dundalk and throughout the rest of the country. Last year’s judges were blown away by the array of different creations on display at the competition, and have high hopes for this year’s entrants. Twenty designs from the four regions will contest the final in Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on May 2.
Guilty of two drink driving charges A man who pleaded guilty to two charges of drink driving was banned for a total of seven years at Dundalk District Court. Patrick McArdle of 53 Forest Park, Dromintee, Newry, admitted the offences which took
place at New Inn, Newry Road on September 28, 2003, and at Hill St, Dundalk, on November 5, 2005. Solicitor, Adrian Ledwith, stated that his 30-year-old client was going through a difficult period at the time. He now has five young children and the
loss of his licence will have a serious effect on his life. Judge William Hamill imposed a €200 fine and one year ban for the first offence, along with a €250 fine and six year disqualification for the second offence.

A man who intends starting a pig farming business was spared a driving ban after pleading guilty to a no insurance charge at Dundalk District Court. Padraig Daly of Shanmullagh, Hackballscross, admitted the offence at Shelagh, Hackballscross, on September 18 last year. Barrister, Irene Sands, told the court that while her client had a previous conviction for having no insurance, it was ten years ago. She stated that the defendant intends starting a pig farming business and that a disqualification would scupper any chance of that. Judge William Hamill imposed a €600 fine on the no insurance charge, taking related matters into account.

Huge crowds for St Brigid festival
The recent Brigid of Faughart Festival was a great success and even with Storm ‘Brigid’ for company it attracted guests from across Ireland over the festival weekend. The festival started with ‘Brigid’s Jig’ Circle Dance Workshop on Wednesday January 29 and continued with the St Brigid’s Cross Making workshops in Dulargy National School and the County Library on Thursday and Friday for both children and adults. The Day of Healing in the Outcomers Centre and ‘Cosmic Brigid’ Talk on Friday was the start of the event and the main programme of events took place on St.Brigid’s Day, February 1, with talks
Oisin Duffy and Kaylum Moran with their crosses at Dulargy NS
and workshops in the Magnet Centre by Dolores Whelan, Karen Ward, Margit Neumann Thomsen and Barabra Smith. A very special Eucharist took
place at Faughart, celebrated by Fr. Tom Hamill with singer Pádraigín Ní Uallacháin enhancing the Brigid’s Day celebration.
One of the highlights of the festival was undoubtedly ‘Weaving Brigid’s Magic’ a night of Music, Song, Story and Poetry in Dundalk Gaol, with both guests and performers blown away by this unique local venue. A bright and sunny Sunday started with the now annual Pilgrimage Walk from Dundalk to Faughart, followed by an Exploration of the Sacred Sites around Faughart Hill with wonderful guide Pat O’Rourke. On Sunday evening, a beautiful Ritual Celebration of Brigid and the Festival of Imbolc in Ravensdale Community Centre, brought an action packed festival to a close.

Strictly Cooley Style Students are getting ready to celebrate Irish Week By Aine Thistleton
irr Traynor, Fergal Malone and Ben McG Luke White, Michael Carron, Adam
STUDENTS of St Vincent’s secondary school have big plans for Irish Week, which will take place from March 1 to 17. Transition Years are planning on hosting an Irish-themed concert, with performances from the school’s traditional music group and chamber choir, as well as many other students within the school. The idea of the concert is to promote the Irish language and culture in a fun and creative way. The show itself is primarily being
organised by Susan Wallace and her TY1 Irish class and will take place on March 6 in the school’s main hall. It is planned for the concert to be opened by music from the traditional Irish group and to feature groups of Irish dancers made up of students within the school. Transition Year students, who have experience of Irish dancing are helping to organise the dancers and get them working on a routine for the night. Classes and solo acts will also perform at the show, the only rule being that anything they sing must
be in Irish. It is hoped to encourage classes from all years to take part alongside the TY1 class, performing the Irish version of both modern and traditional songs. The first performance of the concert will be taking place on the afternoon March 6 and a second performance will take place at 7.30pm that evening, this time for the family of students who are participating and anyone else who wishes to attend. Tickets are €5 per person with children under twelve going free. All funds raised will go to charity.

Coláiste Rís debaters are champs Coláiste Rís is celebrating another All-Ireland title after clinching the national Irish debating title. The Dundalk school, represented by brothers Mícheál and Neasán Mac Suibhne and Bearnard Ó Thoirealaigh, won Comórtas Díospóireachta Uí Chadhain, the national Irish debating competition organised by Gael Linn, for the second time in three years. Coláiste Rís had to overcome two Connemara schools, Scoil Chuimsitheach Chiaráin, An Ceathrú Rua and Coláiste Fheichín, Corr na Móna, as well as archrivals Coláiste Eoin, Dublin. This was a source of great pride and satisfaction, according to Seán Ó Coigligh,
Mícheál and Neasán Mac Suibhne with Bearnard Ó Thoirealaigh team mentor. The Coláiste Rís team opposed the motion ‘go bhfuil gearghá le páirtí polaitiúil nua i bPoblacht na hÉireann’ – that there is an urgent need for a new political party in the Republic of Ireland. The standard of debat-
ing was a credit to all of the students involved, according to guest chairperson Mary Hanafin, the former Fianna Fáil Minister. In her address to the packed hall she urged these young people, “our future leaders”, to take the initiative and
become involved in politics. In doing so the next generation of politicians might make the necessary changes needed to resolve our nation’s difficulties. Ms Hanafin’s praise was echoed by the adjudicators in their summation. They recognised the very high standard of debating skills and fluency in Irish that hallmarked the debate. And while the result was very close they were sufficiently impressed by the Coláiste Rís arguments and convincing style to award the victory the Dundalk team. Pádraig Ó hAdhmaill, school principal, was delighted with this latest victory in Irish debating. “What is particularly pleasing was the
attitude displayed by the lads during the entire campaign. They are tremendous role models for everyone in the school and prove that for those who aim high anything is possible”, he stated. This pride was reflected in the jubilation that greeted the result by the huge following that travelled to Trinity College, Dublin. This latest national title for the Chapel Street school means that all five of the Mac Suibhne siblings have now won national debating titles with Coláiste Rís. Éanna won in 2004, Aonghus in 2006, Caoimhe in 2012 and Mícheál and Neasán have now completed the set. This feat is unequalled anywhere in the country.
Driver is lucky to avoid driving ban A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was told that he was very fortunate to be spared a disqualification. Adam Murphy of 13 Mariners Court, Blackrock, was allowed to keep his licence after Dundalk District Court
was told that he needed it in order to take up a job. Judge William Hamill recommended 140 hours community service in lieu of three months in prison as he adjourned the case to May 14 for a report. He decided against imposing a ban and
told the defence solicitor that his client could consider himself very fortunate. Mr Murphy admitted driving without insurance at Millennium Buildings, Dundalk on July 15 last year, while the court heard that he was previously banned
for a similar offence. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client was in dire financial straits at the time and he held his hands up in relation to the matter. He asked that he be spared a disqualification in order to allow him to work.

ith the excess of Christmas now behind us and the first signs of the spring weather on the horizon, for many people it is the perfect time to start planning a few jobs around the house. Whether it is a simple job of painting a room or a more elaborate task of a major refurbishment, this is the perfect time to get it organised. Certain people will consider moving, but a real alternative to looking for that perfect home is upgrading your bathrooms and kitchen or removing that wall that's been bugging you just might be the solution. For many people the current market is making it a very attractive time to take on a home improve-
attic space as one big storage unit. If so then why not convert it into a living space, such as a media room, or even add a window for an extra bedroom, which will add square footage
and increase the overall value of your home. Your home is almost perfect but it needs a minor facelift. Paint your walls and it will instantly feel fresh and clean.

ment project and overall there are many reasons to get those plans in place. For example the external appearance of your home is im-
portant for raising the value and sales potential. Fresh paint, clean shutters, a new roof and neat landscaping are simple ways you can enhance curb ap-
peal if you're looking to sell. For many people it is important to remember that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Family and friends gather and spend most of their time here. So consider installing a new stove, replacing your fridge or putting in new cabinets to make it more functional and aesthetically pleasing. Another very important room is the bathroom and although it might function just fine, it's always a good time to put in new plumbing, and get rid of that boring plain mirror and replace it with a beautiful framed one. Don't forget the lighting -- lighting is everything, especially for those who spend so much time checking our make-up and changing our outfits. If you're planning on staying in your home thorough your senior years, it's important to upgrade your home with age-in-place features, including replacing your bath with easy step-in showers with bars and installing toilets for people with limited mobility or in wheelchairs. Is Now The Time to Buy? Will I Get a Mortgage?
I
n the last six months these two questions are being asked more frequently. The activity we have seen since Spring 2013 would suggest it is realistically time to consider your options if you are a first time buyer or looking to move your home. There are a couple of factors that will lead you to this conclusion: 1. There has been no relevant building developments since 2007/2008, that is a long time. The buyers and estate agents will tell you that there is a shortage of 3 bed semis for the starter home buyers in the area. 2. As a result of a shortage of homes for the First Time Buyers the rental market is hardening €700 - €800 to rent per month. Consequently renters are now taking the view that they could be using this money towards their own home. There does appear to be a better “air of confidence”
in our future as a nation, for jobs and stability of employment and opportunities for our young people. 3. Mortgage lending is beginning to open up again

Need to commence a house building programme
O
ne of the country’s leading economists has highlighted the urgent need to commence a housebuilding programme in order to avoid problems in the future. Economic and Social Research Institute research professor John FitzGerald has stated that the country needs to see 25,000 houses built per year in order to feed the demand of a young population. He warned that otherwise, children will end up living with their parents until they are 35. Speaking at the Trinity Economic Forum over the weekend, Prof FitzGerald, repeated calls made by Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar last December for more housing to meet pent-up demand, saying the number of new homes being built needs to treble. Prof FitzGerald outlined the enormous benefits that would result from such a programme as he said recovery in the construction industry would have a positive impact on people on the dole, especially those who don’t have an educational level above than the Leaving Certificate. He also told the forum that emigration can have a posi-
tive effect on the economy and workforce, as Irish people tend to be homing pigeons, and research has shown they are more productive if they have worked abroad. “People who emigrate and come back are 7 per cent more productive at work and I don’t mean a year spent in Australia, when I say worked abroad. Successful firms are firms where people have seen the outside world. More often management will have worked abroad”, explained the professor.

Novena To St. Martha O St. Martha, I Resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro’ the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants everything before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.D.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never know to fail). C.D.

full after he pleaded guilty to handling stolen property on March 15, 2012. The court heard that groceries to the value of €462.44 were ordered by credit card and delivered to an address at Cedarwood Park. The owner of the credit card had not authorised its use. Mr Ogunde later admitted signing for the goods but denied ordering them. Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client
had €100 in court towards compensation which he as anxious to pay in full. She added that the defendant has no income and is living with his girlfriend who is on Social Welfare. Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to April 2 for a Community Service report and recommended 100 hours in lieu of two month, but warned: “If full compensation is not paid he will not be suitable no matter what the report says.”

It seems a little like the new Fiat 500 but it has been developed in conjunction with Daimler and will share the DNA of the new Smart For Two / ForFour range. Design cues have been taken from Renault
5 of old, and it mirrors the Twin’Z and Twin’Run concept cars that Renault presented in 2013. There will be a choice of four vibrant ‘pop’ colours (light blue, white, yellow and red). It would seem that LED day time running lights are standard across the range. Renault is set to release more information nearer the unveiling at the Geneva Motorshow in March, prices and specifications will follow.
