Accident waiting to happen

A LOCAL man whose brother was killed in a collision while walking to school is afraid there is “an accident waiting to happen” near a school in Lordship.

Stephen O’Connor from Rampark, Jenkinstown is concerned that newly installed ‘speed cushions’ are not sufficiently slowing down drivers in the area.

“The speed ramps have not been re-instated as per their original design. The ramps are still very small. They are big cushions really. They are not ramps,” said Stephen.

“Traffic is moving so much faster. There is no need to slow down. I contacted Louth County Council about this issue but to date, I’ve not had a response.

“There was a council meeting recently and Councillor Andrea McKevitt put in a motion about the issue.”

Stephen added: “I’m hopeful of getting a good result. I lost a brother in 1989 on that stretch of road when we were both walking to school.

“He got hit by an oncoming vehicle and died on the way to hospital so you can understand why I am so concerned about road safety.”

He continued: “Heavy goods vehicles can now speed straight past the entrance of St Patrick’s GFC, which has multiple cars entering and leaving at all times, not to mention the hundreds of local children walking in and out of the gate.

“Prior to this, the people of Lordship campaigned for years to have these ramps installed, and although they provided the children of the school some level of the previous ones were still not completely effective in protecting them from the speeding lorries.

“Now we have been greeted with replacement ramps, which are completely ineffective at slowing down

large vehicles.

“Are we going to have to wait for someone else to be killed for this to be addressed?”

Councillor Andrea McKevitt told the Dundalk Leader that it is “absolutely ridiculous” that the ramps have been removed in the first place “without prior notice”.

“The ramps were installed for the safety of children. There has been a fatality along this stretch of road,” she said.

“The change appears to be a new policy by the council. Gardai are out there at the moment doing a speed count review. I hope the council will re-visit this topic and re-install the ramps.”

St Oliver’s 5K fundraiser takes place this weekend

A fundrAising 5K for the friends of st Oliver’s Community Hospital in dundalk takes place on saturday september 16 at 11am.

The event, which had been postponed due to the pandemic for a couple of years, is back and will take place on saturday september 16, starting at 11am from the dowdallshill gfC clubrooms on the newry road in dundalk.

furTHEr to the success of inclusion Louth’s family fun day in Oriel Park last year, the local support group for families of those with intellectual disabilities held another family fun day on sunday 27th August. This time it was an indoor event in the Community Centre, Blackrock where 230 family members, young and old had a wonderful afternoon. families were in-

vited through contacts with st John of god services, rehab Care, Praxis Care and HsE (Mounthamilton House). The highlight of the day for the children were the amusements provided by Pelican Promotions, also facepainting and Tommy the wonderful magician who entertained all with his magic show. Paul Callan of Louth WATCH Club brought out two Trishaws

– and provided wheelchair users with bicycle spins around nearby Blackrock Park.

Alan McEneaney, a PayPal volunteer, did dJ and his music provided a great atmosphere. Other PayPal volunteers manned the registration and car parking. delicious food was provided by Conlon Catering, ice-creams were donated by HB and crisps and minerals

also provided through local sponsorship. The Selfie Mirror Party Promotions photographs were a great success and partygoers took home a lovely memento of their enjoyable day. Chairman Eoghan Bailey thanked his committee, the staff of Blackrock Community Centre and the many volunteers for helping to make the day such a wonderful success.

Large primary school classes unacceptable states O Murchú

SINN FéIN TD for Louth has said that Government must act urgently to reduce ‘unacceptably large class sizes’.

New figures from the Department of Education, show that there were 27 primary schools in Louth with 30 or more students for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘Government has failed to plan and properly fund schools, which has resulted in unacceptably large class sizes including in Louth. This has been raised as a concern for many years now, by unions, parents and headteachers yet government has failed to act despite these warnings.

‘Starkly, the new figures highlighted that there are many students in classes of 30 or more spread

across 27 different schools in Louth. This is clearly unacceptable.

‘The problem is particularly acute in the North Louth area, with schools in the Cooley peninsula showing largest class sizes of 28 at Ardaghy NS, 29 at Monksland NS Omeath; 30 at Dulargy NS in Ravensdale and Rampark NS and 31 at St Oliver’s in Carlingford.

‘The issue is not confined to North Louth. In Blackrock, Scoil na Creagha Dubha, St Fursey’s NS and St Francis NS all have largest class sizes of 32.

‘Large class sizes have a detrimental impact on the quality of education teachers can deliver. This undermines the teaching environment and children’s ability to learn to the best of their ability.

‘I am urging the Minister to urgently address

this issue. There can be no more delays or excuses. All our children deserve the best chance in life, through high quality education that should be a right and not subject to a postcode lottery.

‘Sinn Féin wants to put an end to classes of over 30 pupils and ensure standards never slip to this stage again.

‘We are committed to working towards the EU average of 20 children per class which supports education and learning, and allows for children who may need additional support or guidance to have that opportunity’.

“Government need to get their act together and cut class sizes to fair and appropriate levels so children in Louth get the education they deserve.”

Establishment of working group for Ice House Hill is a step in right direction - Kelly

Cllr Seán Kelly’s motion before Septembers meeting of Dundalk MD calling for the establishment of a working group for Ice House HiIl was passed. In light of issues at the Park over the past number of months which cultivated in Carmel Naughton, the main sponsor of the Park, writing to the local papers outlining her pressing concerns.

O’Hanlon Park, Pearse Park, Northend and Demense to meet along with a representative from the Naughton Family and local Councillors to discuss areas in which the Park could be improved. The group will meet on a quarterly basis and raise issues directly with council management.

Kelly commented ‘the overall upkeep of the Park has been a concern for locals in recent

years due to areas being overgrown, graffiti and the general pond area. A lot of progress has been made in the summer months since this conversation began but there is more to do with the footpaths and ornamental lights surrounding the Park. We now have a vehicle in this new working group to drive progress for the benefit of the whole community.’

Retained firefighters vote to accept new proposal

THE shop steward for Louth’s siPTu retained firefighters has welcomed the vote to accept proposals from the Workplace relations Commission (WrC) aimed at resolving a dispute over pay and conditions.

Lorcan Conlon from Ardee said he is “pleased” retained firefighters voted to accept the proposals in a ballot of siPTu members.

Of those who took part in the ballot, 63 per cent of the members voted in favour of accepting the deal.

“it’s a great step forward. it goes some way towards addressing work-life balance and pay and conditions for retained firefighters,” said Lorcan.

“i hope this commitment will be hon-

oured. Hopefully everything will be worked out over the coming months and we will have a viable service.” since June, approximately 2,000 retained firefighters had been participating in a

campaign of industrial action across 200 retained fire stations.

Last month, they suspended their industrial action after agreement was reached at the WrC.

Councillor McKevitt calls for signage at Gyles Quay Toilets

L OCAL councillor Andrea McKevitt, has requested that signage be erected at the toilets at gyles Quay advising people ‘’ no campervan waste to be disposed of into toilets’’. This call comes after a summer of toilets being closed more often than they were open due to blockages.

The peninsula based councillor has commented on the matter saying ‘’ The closure of these toilet facilities could not have come at a worse time for people who were enjoying gyles Quay this summer, it was mostly the men’s section that was closed off and this resulted in men using the women’s toilets, which is not acceptable.

“i have been advised on previous occasions that the toilets are blocked due to campervans disposing of their toilet waste in these public toilets,

which is not the purpose of these facilities, and in turn raises a sanitation concern. in other popular locations throughout the country i have seen

where other councils have signage on beach toilet facilities that state ‘’no campervan waste to be disposed of into toilets’’, and it must be effective as the toilets were open.

‘’i trust the people disposing of their waste have no other option but to take their waste home, but in the interest of the health and safety of all concerned this is what they must do, gyles Quay car park is not a designated camping area and therefore there are no such facilities for those wishing to camp here overnight, so they should do the responsible thing and dispose of their waste in an appropriate manner.’’

Cross Cooley Challenge donate massive cheques to local charities

THE FINAL CHEQUE presentation was made recently to two local charities who both benefited greatly from this year’s Cross Cooley Challenge which raised an amazing €39,493.34. Funds raised were divided equally between the North Louth Hospice and the Maria Goretti Foundation with both organisations receiving a cheque for

€19,462.79 last week. .

The Cross Cooley Challenge has become a hugely popular event every summer and this year was the 11th renewal of the fundraiser which sees hundreds of people take part in a sponsored walk across the mountains from Ballymakellet to Carlingford. In total the Cross Cooley Challenge has

now raised over €360,000 for the North Louth Hospice and Maria Goretti Foundation over the last decade plus.

The hard working committee are already looking forward to he 2024 renewal where more money will be raised for local charities around the county.

Allsún ready to tackle Kona

Local woman Allsún Kelly is preparing to take part in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii next month.

Originally from Kilcurry, Allsún (31) currently lives in Dundalk and works for Wu Xi Biologics as a QA Validation Engineer in the Quality Assurance Department.

“At the moment, I’m training twice a day, every day doing running, cycling and swimming. I did Irish dancing when I was younger and that’s how I stayed fit,” said Allsún.

“When I was older, I got into running and later worked at Aura Dundalk and took part in a fitness event there.

“I took part in a few more local events and gradually moved on to international events.

This is my first time doing the Ironman World Championships.”

Allsún added: “I had to qualify for the event in Estonia at the beginning of August. I’m really looking forward to the Ironman World Championship next

month.

“The event will take place in Hawaii on Saturday, October 14 in Kailua Kona. It’s beside the island where the fires took place this summer.

“The islands have been the home of the

World Championships since the event’s inception in 1978. It has been ultra-triathletes ultimate target as a result for decades.”

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organised by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22mile (42.2 km) run, completed in that order.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to the atmosphere and being able to go up against the best athletes in the world,” she said.

“I’m aiming to complete the 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42km marathon in around 12 hours.”

Eoin captures prestigious dundalk scratch Cup

Eoin Murphy made a big breakthrough on home soil today when he captured the Dundalk Scratch Cup sponsored by One Finance.

The 23-year-old became the fifth Dundalk player to lift the Carroll Cup and joins some of the biggest names in Irish golf, like threetimes major winner Padraig Harrington, on the competition’s roll of honour.

Murphy, who was a member of Leinster’s Inter-provincial winning team last week, finished on six under par after two rounds of 69 and won by three shots from Roganstown’s Sean Keeling who is heading for Rome as a member of the European Junior Ryder Cup team.

Meenan calls for local govt. staffing crisis to be resolved

SINN FéIN councillor Kevin Meenan has called on Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien and the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) to resolve the Local Government staffing crisis before it impacts on people in Louth.

Clr. Meenan made the call as members of the Fórsa Trade Union initiated industrial action commencing with an ‘indefinite ban on engagement on all political representations’ which will “severely hamper our ability to serve our constituents on day to day matters.”

constituents who will ultimately suffer. However, this is absolutely not the fault of staff, the blame lies solely with the government and the LGMA and I would ask that Chief Executive Joan Martin exert whatever influence she has in her role, to demand that the Government and the LGMA get back to the negotiation table and work towards addressing the issues of job evaluation and sort out the retention and recruitment crisis in Local Government.”

Cllr Meenan concluded by saying “Sinn Féin support the workers in pursuing their rights and respect their decision to initiate industrial action. However, the government and LGMA need to get this sorted as soon as possible to minimise any impact on the public.”

Coláiste Chú Chulainn Class of 2023 are heading into exciting careers and studies

rECEnT graduates of Coláiste Chú Chulainn convened in the local school to share stories of their new careers and studies after their Leaving Certificate results.

The school’s guidance Counsellor Ms nichola fitzpatrick said:

“Our students worked very hard and achieved a historic set of Leaving Certificate

results. it is part of our vision to ensure that this hard work pays off in the form of career and studies pathways. so, we invited the graduates back to school to share their stories before they head off on their new adventures.

“some students have already started working in engineering and air conditioning apprenticeships.

The local economy is already benefitting from their work.

Other graduates are entering courses ranging across engineering, nursing, psychology, languages, music, economics, nursing, sports, security and the arts.

The broad range of chosen pathways is a result of our broad and balanced curriculum where students sat

exams in 30 subjects.

“We were delighted to learn that nearly all students were offered their top 2 choices in the CAO system.

This is down to good planning from the students and their families. it also shows the benefit of Transition year and the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. guidance Counsellor Mr steven Creighan said:
