A Ravensdale man and his family were at White Hart Lane last Saturday evening to witness at first-hand the shocking scenes as Bolton Wanderers Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch. Seamus Gregory and his family attended the match as they celebrated his son Shane’s 13th birthday. However the game would last just 41 minutes as Bolton Wanderers’ former England Under 21 international midfielder, collapsed close to the centre circle. “I bought Shane a ticket for the FA Cup game against Bolton for his 13th birthday as he’s a big Spurs fan and myself, my wife and three children travelled over to London on Saturday.” explained Seamus. “We met up with my wife’s sister and her two children over there and the kids got to meet some of the Spurs players before

Rag Week hopes to top €8k By Niamh Kirk

DkIT’s Rag week was one of their most exciting and successful yet. The students selected two charities, Barnardos and to the Gary Kelly Foundation, to donate their funds to. While the total raised is not yet in and the Students Union do hope to top last year’s figure which came in at around €8000. Much of the chaos in local estates that has been seen in previous years was not present during this year’s RAG week. Residents associations in

the area appear happier this year with the students’ antics than in previous years. Families in College Heights cleaned up the neighbourhood over three days and hired a contractor to help them. The residents praised the few students who came out on Sunday to help clean up the estate. James Clarke the Students Union President was out with other students ensuring that the area was left in the way it was found. “There was one house in particular that was just a mess; the outside of it was destroyed. I had to call the

landlord, not to complain, there is no point anymore but to tell him that the house was being destroyed” said one resident of the estate. The landlord went to check on his property promptly and informed the resident that had alerted him that the house had suffered considerable internal damage too. “To be fair, on Sunday it appears that the students from the worst offending house were out cleaning-up and collecting rubbish in black bags” said one Rockfield resident. Warning over ‘charity’ scam By Niamh Kirk

Residents in Pearse Park are reeling this week after being scammed out of as much as €500. On Saturday evening, a well dressed, well mannered young woman called into houses in Pearse Park and told them she was going to do a 10k run in support of children’s charity Barnardos. The woman would claim that a neighbour had sent her to the house, the person having been recommended as a charitable individual. She knew the first names of many people in the area and a basic knowledge of local tit-bits adding a degree of authenticity and her casual nature indicated there was

nothing questionable. Many of the residents handed over an average €20, signed her sponsorship card and wished her the best of luck. It is not known exactly how much she managed to scam out of the residents in the area but it is approximated that about €500 was given to the woman in good faith. She then got into a silver car before making a speedy exit from the estate. Unfortunately nobody managed to get the registration number of the car. In an effort to prevent anyone else becoming the victim of these scammers one resident issued a warning last week to people in Dundalk to be aware of their methods. He also offered advice on how to avoid becoming

a victim yourself. He also encouraged people to lookout for their neighbours, particularly those living alone. ‘Do not give money to people you do not know - no matter how good cause they seem to be representing, genuine charities will not have agents calling house to house to collect money for them”, he explained. The Children’s charity last week said “If a member of the public is unsure as to whether the fundraiser is legitimate, Barnardos would advise that they ask for identification and a letter of authentication which is provided by Barnardos to genuine fundraisers.” “Barnardos depend on the support of official fundraisers

and door-to-door direct debit fundraisers to raise vital funds for the charity. The children’s charity encourage anyone who is suspicious or uncomfortable of a caller at their door to contact 1850 222 300 where the Barnardos fundraising team holds a list of active fundraisers who have registered with them”, a spokesperson said. They also listed some things to look out for including that the sponsorship card is an envelope with a Barnardos logo, on-street bucket collectors should have a Garda permit and they stated that fundraisers never ask for cash and always have official Direct debit mandates. They also carry a folder of information on the charity and a photo ID.

Interesting talk on The Táin

An interesting talk on the Táin will take place at St Vincents Secondary School, Seatown in Dundalk on Thursday March 22 at 8pm. The speaker is Paul Gosling and the title of his talk is ‘Placing names and naming places: rereading Táin Bó Cúailnge in Louth’. Dundalk native, Paul Gosling has extensive knowledge of the town and of the local associations of the Táin.

He writes that the most famous of tales, the Táin Bó Cúailnge features ‘Delga in Muirtheimne’ (Dundalk) and it appears to have been one of the chief places from which Cúchulainn and Laeg, his charioteer, harassed the armies of Connacht on their journey to Cooley. The Táin Bó Cuailnge is the story of the Cattle Raid of Cooley. Queen Maeve invaded Ulster to

steal the Brown Bull of Cooley so she would be equal in wealth with her husband, Aillil, who owned the White-horned Bull. Cúchulainn defended Ulster single-handed, because the Ulster warriors were afflicted by the Curse of Macha. Maeve brought the Brown back to Connacht. When the White-horned Bull saw the Brown, they fought and killed each other.

The large crowd at the start of the 2011 Leprechaun Hunt

The crowds will gather in the Cooley Peninsula once again this weekend as the National Leprechaun Hunt in Carlingford is happening on next Sunday March 25. Following its official designation as an EU Special Protection Area for Little People in 2010, Carlingford has been thronged with visitors to view the only authentic Leprechaun artefacts known to exist in Ireland. Just over 20 years ago,

the suit and bones of a leprechaun were found on The Slieve Foy mountain by the late, well known businessman PJ O Hare. He discovered them after hearing a faint crying and when he went to investigate, he was shocked to find the suit of a leprechaun, along with coins and bones. This sparked the original Leprechaun Hunt which was held on the Easter Sunday of 1989, attracting 4,000 visitors to the region.

Kevin Woods, who led the original hunt and a member of the Leprechaun Preservation working group said: “We will have 100 ‘leprechauns’ with a total cash amount of €2000. They will be located on the side of the mountain to the right of the SPA and hope to raise a lot of money for charity. However, we ask that if people come across a real Leprechaun that they will allow them to pass and not try to capture them.

“Slieve Foy is now recognised as the home of the last Leprechauns of Ireland and we know there are 236 currently living on the mountain. It is important that they are safe, happy and we do not allow them to become extinct”, added Kevin. Prospecting licences will be sold on the day at €5 and registration begins at 1pm. Only carriers of authenticated licences will be allowed on the mountain that day.

A Judge requested to hear from a Child Care Manager after it was claimed a 29-year-old Latvian woman was stealing for her children. It was alleged she had “no visible source of income” and was refused social welfare. Judge William Hamill adjourned to March 28 to hear from the Child Care Manager. He remanded the defendant on continuing bail. Guna Levcenkova a mother of five of 366, Beechmount Drive, Dundalk has been appearing at the local court for shoplifting, involving food and clothing from a year ago, and allegedly committed offences recently, all of which she

admitted. In that time her solicitor Sean T O’Reilly said she received three sums of €600. She had appealed and made a further appeal on February 28 against not being granted social welfare and a decision was awaited He said he had written to the HSE on several occasions from last March on her behalf regarding the plight of her children. He received four replies, but in his view there was no meaningful response. He said the defendant had disclosed she had worked at different times picking winkles and at farming activities picking crops .She had been assessed and granted a

medical card for herself and her five children. The Probation Service had completed a report and in their view the family was in an extreme situation of hardship. The solicitor for the HSE said a house visit was carried out recently and the fridge was full of food and the heating on. Judge Hamill remarked the case had “some worrying aspects” that went above and beyond the crimes. He was told charitable donations were obtained to cover the ESB before Christmas and there was now a bill of €500 approximately and rent of approximately €400 to be paid.

Senator critical of Stapleton Place cycle lanes

Matthew, Shea, Karl and Dylan Campbell enjoy the parade last Saturday.

By Niamh Kirk

Senator Mary Moran last week questioned the value for money achieved by the installation of cycle lanes to Stapleton Place and called for a full review of the project. Dundalk Town Council was criticised in the Seanad last week when Senator Mary Moran

brought up the changes to Stapleton Place an Order of Business in a Seanad sitting. The Labour Senator said “As a result of the new cycle lanes, the area presents a safety hazard for residents. Residents living on the left hand side of the road face cyclists if they get out on the passenger side of a car and face oncoming traffic if they get out on the right

hand side.” The layout of the roads and the degree of danger to the resident and inconveniences to people who regularly take that route were laid bare. “No matter from what door they emerge, they are emerging into traffic”, added Senator Moran who pointed out that she is in favour of

the installation of cycle lanes. The Council administration and locally elected officials were at odds over the changes at the last council meeting. Councillors heavily criticised the failure to consult the residents in the area prior to the works beginning. Dundalk Town Council has been informed by the Department of Transport of the ‘design

issues’ including interaction between cars and cyclists at certain junctions, car parking along the cycle route and the visibility of the kerb installed to separate the cycle track from the road. The Council have since agreed to conduct an audit on the safety issues raised.

Baby story a reminder of challenges being faced By Niamh Kirk

A former Cura counsellor in the area reminded people that despite advancement in attitudes to unmarried mothers, many women do still face tough choices. Charlotte Kearney was so moved by the story of Helen Ward, the woman who was found as a newborn on the Marshes Road 44 years ago, it brought back near forgotten memories of the difficulties faced by women in the area. She also says that many women still face difficult choices on learning of their pregnancy and that support is there. The story of a child found in a phone booth wrapped-up with a warm bottle struck a chord with a counsellor who supported many women during their pregnancies for almost 35 years. Charlotte was one of the first pregnancy counsel-

lors in the area and was there when the first Cura office in Dundalk opened. The picture she paints of the pressures on women at the time is bleak. “There would be a knock on the door but by the time you answered they could be gone, or the phone would ring but no one would speak. There was such a sense of fear and horror that their pregnancy would be discovered. It was the hardest decision a women had to face.” said Charlotte. “They could not tell anyone, they were afraid to tell their parents and the family doctor.” Charlotte recalled having to conduct pregnancy tests in the back of cars because many women were too afraid to be seen near the centre. Women would visit the offices in Jocelyn Street from Cork and Limerick, too afraid to be seen seeking help in their own locality. What is truly harrowing about the

situation that prevailed at the time was that it was their own family, friends and neighbours that these women were afraid of. “When I read about Helen’s story, it was so emotive, it reminded me of how hard the decision was for so many women.” she added The Cura centre that opened in Dundalk 35 years ago is still here and there is still a demand for their support from concerned mothers to be and their families. Cura Dundalk are currently witnessing a in change in attitudes to unplanned pregnancy in the past few months. “For many a pregnancy might not have been a crisis a year ago, but people are worried that they won’t have a job, and may panic over how they can afford to care for the child. “Counselling is really about listening while someone comes to a decision that they feel comfortable with”, she added.

The pair will be joined by one of the brightest new stars to the scene, Sam Commorford on sax and Dan Callaghan on Double Bass. . Mr Nielsen has played with some of the world leading artists

including Kenny Wheeler, Larry Coryell and Dave Liberman. Teaching since 1979 he lectures the world over on jazz guitar, improvisation and composition. He currently lectures in DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama. James has his Masters from the same and is also a graduate from the Drummers Collective, New

York. In the past He has headed his own live projects where he has explored the concept of improvisation in traditional jazz and how it can use modern technology. Organisers say “Expect music you know played with devastating emotional content and exploration. It will be a night of pure creativity”

Marshes hosts cross border trade fair

There are many students taking part from local schools in Dundalk. There are also participants from schools across the border. All these bright young entrepreneurs have shown a huge level of commitment and initiative and now this trade fair has giving them the opportunity to promote and sell their products to the public.

Variety show a great event The recent Variety Show in Ravensdale Community Centre on Sunday last was a great event. Amatuers and professional from the locality came together to perform on stage and entertain the locals. The show had great diversity and contrast and saw many accomplished musicians perform alongside children for whom it was their first time on stage. The line up was first class with internationally recognised musicians including Gerry O’Connor and his band, Mike Jones Pianist and Kevin Gallagher on guitar and vocals. Many children from Dulargy National School and the Ravensdale Church choir also participated. All those involved with the show gave their time freely in order to raise money for the upkeep of the commu-

nity centre in Ravensdale. Show organiser and member of the Ravensdale Community Centre Committee, Jenny Spain Ravensdale was very lucky to have such a wonderful facility as the community centre. “There are so many talented people from the locality who are happy to give something back to their community without any charge or fuss, Gerry O’Connor and his band, The Lordship Set Dancers, Mike Jones, Kevin Gallagher, Liam Manning, Bernadette Smith and John Noonan are all very accomplished acts and to perform together with much younger children will give them something to aim for in the future. I would like to thank all those who participated in and helped with the show”, she added.

Louth TDs air their views on EU

Louth’s TD’s have stated their positions on the EU Fiscal referendum. Last week the Government conceded to holding a referendum following the advice offered by the Attorney General. Enda Kenny provisionally signed the Treaty in Brussels last week, subject to ratification. The ink was hardly dry when parties began to make calls for support or dissent. The treaty has already been polemic in terms of the extent to which we look to wider issues before making a decision. Last week Deputy Gerry Adams called for a rejection of the treaty stating that we cannot afford it. Focusing on the economics of the treaty he said “as part of this the Government plans to cut a further €8.6 billion from the economy in the next three years to meet the Troika Deficit target of 3%. “Enda Kenny’s and Eamon Gilmore’s austerity treaty demands that this deficit be reduced to a

0.5% target. This means that up to a further €6 billion in cuts and new taxes will be imposed.” The Sinn Fein TD added: “We certainly need a very informed, very informative and mature debate and discussion. The fact is the treaty is about, on one hand, transferring what remains of fiscal power from the Oireachtas to undemocratic bureaucrats in Brussels and on the other it is about giving powers to the EU Court of Justice to impose to fines on any state that is responding to their dictate. The big question is with the state’s relationship with the EU and whether it is democratic. Enda Kenny says he wants to bring back economic sovereignty but he is likely to be the one who removes the power of the state entirely. He might as well get rid of the middle man, the Orieachtas. ” Seamus Kirk’s Finna Fail are in agreement with the Government on the ‘yes’ vote. “The proposed referendum is

on the EU Fiscal Compact Treaty only. The Government has not yet decided on the question to be put before the electorate. The outcome may have implications, depending on the question, on our continued participation in the euro zone”, said Deputy Kirk. “I feel the future wellbeing and prosperity of our country is very much tied to European participation.” Labour Deputy Gerald Nash while stating that the referendum was not strictly about the current funding warned that “a rejection would mean that the Irish people will not have access to new money to fund our social welfare system and hospitals and schools if more EU support is required. In any event, the work of the government is edging us ever closer to regaining our national economic sovereignty.” He welcomed the idea of people looking to the wider implications but advised to “look widely, but

look closely.” Fine Gael TD Fergus O’Dowd however is inclined towards a narrower view of the referendum stating “The referendum is about the Stability Treaty and its contents. It’s about putting stronger rules in place to ensure future governments can never again mortgage away our children’s future through reckless decisions. “I am looking forward to having a full debate on the contents of the Treaty in the coming months, and to making sure that people across Louth feel that they understand what exactly it means. “Unfortunately, many people will try to turn this into a referendum on their own narrow interests. This referendum isn’t about the Government, or the Opposition, it’s about the country.” Last week Enda Kenny stated that the referendum would be a once off and that the Irish people would be free to decide.

Ardee Band leads parade SAINT Patrick’s Day is usually the busiest day of the year for Ardee Concert Band and this year was no exception. At Noon Mass which was offered for the living and deceased members. The members had a quick turn around when they had to be back in the band rooms for 2.30pm to form up for the Parade at 3pm. The band was led this year by Fiona Reilly PRO acting as Staff Major in the absence of Paddy Ward. The four flag bearers Clodagh McClean, Lauren Mathews, Samantha Connolly and Sinead Nutley carried the Ardee Town flag, the Louth flag, the Leinster flag and the Italian na-

tional flag in honour of our visitors from Nettuno. Next weekend, March 24 and 25, are busy for the band again as it’s the weekend of their Church Gate Collection at all masses in Ardee and Ballapousta. For the junior members of the band, it’s their annual trip, which this year is to Bowling and Quasar in Dublin. Committee members will supervise the youngsters for the day. When a Garda visited his premises known as Bennetts on September 15 2010 his licence was a year out of date, Inspector Martin Beggy stated.
