A group of local business people have proved that the spirit of generosity and kindness is far from dead by coming together to work on a much needed community project. Thanks to the efforts of members of the Louth Trade Network, who have taken inspiration from the Secret Millionaire, the residents of Carroll Meade are in for a treat with the promise of the centre being refurbished. Late last year the group of tradesmen and service providers decided to do something interesting for a community group in the area. Network member, Cormac Malone said that the group took inspiration from the Secret Millionaire TV pro-
gramme and decided to give their time and expert knowledge. The group approached Dundalk Town Council and offered to do work that would benefit a community of older people. Mary Deary who sits on the Louth Older People’s forum indicated that Carroll Meade might be in need of some support and a plan to rejuvenate the area was settled for the Bealtaine festival weekend May 12. As the group looked more closely at the work they wanted to do in order to make the necessary improvements they realised it would take a lot more work and committed to beginning the project well in advance of the original day. This Friday some of the Continued on Page 4

Call to support town’s young footballers By Eunan Whyte
Some of the town’s up and coming footballers are calling on local fans to get behind them as they attempt to land their first trophy of the season. Dundalk FC U-19s will take on Cork City in the final of the Enda McGuill Memorial Cup in Oriel Park on Wednesday May 2 and manager, Martin Connolly, is hoping that supporters turn out to get
behind the team. “These young lads have worked very hard throughout the season and it is a great achievement to get to the final, so hopefully people in the town will get behind them on the night. “Cork will arrive as favourites having won the Elite Division but we have gained a lot of confidence from beating two of the top teams in Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers. “There are a lot of lo-
cals involved and it would be a great boost for them if we had a big crowd to cheer them on”, explained Martin. Dundalk won the toss to have home advantage in the competition named after one of Dundalk FC’s best known administrators, Enda McGuill, and it would be fitting if his team lifted the trophy. Included in the Dundalk squad will be local stars such as Ben McLaughlin, who is now part of the senior team, GlenTraynor, Conor McDonald, Kurt Murphy and Gerry McSorley. The game kicks-off in Oriel Park on Wednesday May 2 at 7pm.

Dundalk’s parking meters take sterling
‘Sterling not accepted’ is what is written on the many parking meters around Dundalk. Yet, it appears that this is not actually the case. Sterling coins can be inserted into the metres and whats more they offer quite a favourable exchange rate. Paddy Malone, President of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce says that Northern shoppers have been put off shopping in Dundalk due to the meters claiming not to accept sterling. “I was at a meeting a while ago and we were talking about providing

20 new jobs for town By Niamh Kirk Ryan Keeling of international consulting and software development firm Diaceutics praised DkIT and Dundalk as he announced the company was bringing 20 jobs to Dundalk earlier this week. Over the next three years the company will expand its personalised medical software operations which are located at the incubation centre in DkIT. Up until now the company has been UK-based with representatives positioned globally, “Rapid growth and
development of new services and software products requires a full-time team not only with experience in the IT sector but with a collaborative and innovative environment, which is ably provided by the incubation center at DkIT. “Said Ryan Keeling, SVP, IT Solutions, Diaceutics. Mr Keeling said that Diaceutis began their search by thinking about Dublin but the IDA had very strong views on the IT cluster in the Dundalk area and asked the company to go to the innovation centre in DkIT and
soon settled on it as the location for the team. “We were so impressed with the culture there and what they are attempting to do. “There are a couple of people who are real gems in terms of understanding and operating as connector to other businesses. When you are a young business that type of connector is very important. “We have been since January and we are very happy with the decision. We think we will easily meet the target of 20 positions by 2015” , he said.

Judge agrees to Garda request
Gardai applied to have further adjourned a case of three young Romanian women accused of brothel keeping to obtain telephone records. Judge William Hamill agreed and remanded Bianca Dumitrescu (22), Luiza Hazaparu (19) and Elisabeta Lupu (19) to Dundalk Court on September 5th to allow the Gardai complete the investigation file and seek the direction of the DPP on how the matter should proceed. Barrister Irene Sands said that the case would be fully contested. The three are accused of the
offence at their then address at O’Hare’s Mill, Nicholas Street on November 23rd last. The Judge further relaxed the women’s bail conditions. They were at a previous sitting allowed to sign twice a week at Kevin Street Garda Street in Dublin instead of at Dundalk Station having moved address to Clanbrassil Street in the city. He reduced that to once a week on a Wednesday. The signing-on requirement on Miss Dumitrescu was lifted for a short period in January and
February for her to return home to complete her studies. Inspector John Foudy told on Wednesday that the investigating Garda was awaiting telephone records, which formed an important part of the investigation. There was a long delay in getting phone records in relation to investigations and he asked for a three month adjournment. The file would be sent to the DPP when the records were received. The women were granted an interpreter.

Louth GAA mourns passing of Charlie Louth GAA mourned the passing of one of its legendary figures following the death of Charlie McAlester on Tuesday of last week. Charlie was one of the Wee County’s most passionate supporters and served as kitman for 39 years before being forced to retire due to ill-health. There was a huge attendance at the funeral Mass on Friday in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Drogheda, with his many friends from all over the country turning up to pay their respects. Among those to pay tribute was current Louth manager, Peter Fitzpatrick. “I have known Char-

was in Navan last week to witness the win over Meath and that was the happiest I had seen him in a long time. He was jumping up and down clapping players on the back”, revealed Peter who feels that the victory was a fitting send off for the Newtown Blues clubman. Former Louth manager, Paddy Clarke, hailed Charlie as one of the greats of Louth “To Charlie, the Louth jersey was sacred. No matter what level or code, if you were wearing the red jersey it was something to be respected. “One of the great things about him was that he was able to instil
that sense of pride in the players, particularly the young lads. Meanwhile, Louth County Board Secretary, Des Halpenny, reflected the affection people throughout the country held for Charlie. “Charlie was a true legend and a man of great integrity and principles, it was always a pleasure to be in his company with his passion and love for the GAA in particular Newtown Blues and Louth evident to all. The Louth GAA family has been enriched by his life and he will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him”, explained the secretary.

Further concerns for Vodafone staff By Niamh Kirk
There were further concerns for Vodafone workers last week as the company who is taking over the contract from Rigney Dolphin, Teleperformance Newry, have begun to advertise positions for the call centre before negotiations with staff have been finalised.
Vodafone call centre workers downed tools last Thursday in an effort to exact answers regarding the movement of jobs from Dublin and Dundalk to Newry. Word spread like wildfire across social networks that employees had become fed up with the lack of communication regarding the company’s plans for their operations in Ireland.
Many of the employees expressed the concern that it would not be economically viable to commute to Newry. The level of pay and the cost of commuting meant that for many of the employees they will be better off on social welfare payments. While the Communication Workers Union engage in talks with Vodafone there has been no indi-
cations that the company, which posited an increase in revenue of 4% in November 2011 taking it up to approximately €24bn. Irish workers are not the only ones fighting against the communications giant, call centre workers in Ghana have gone on indefinite strike demanding an increase in pay and is the subject of jobs being outsourced also.

Proposal to hold referendum discussion By Niamh Kirk
Councillor Tomas Sharkey is aiming to host community based discussions on the forthcoming Referendum on the fiscal treaty. The Sinn Fein representative has written to a number of pro treaty TDs and MEPs and Co Louth’s three senators to get involved and
to offer their insights at the discussions. In the letter Mr Sharkey highlighted the importance of being aware of Treaty detail and the proposing and opposing views, as well as having an opportunity to question the pro and anti treaty representatives. “In recent days a number of opinion polls have indicated that a large
section of Irish voters are undecided as to how they will vote at the end of May. “I believe that it is only right that people reserve judgement until they get to hear as many points both for and against the treaty.” “I want to co-host community meetings where voters get to hear, in person, the arguments for and
against. More importantly, I want as many voters as possible to have the chance to ask their own questions and have them answered.” Recent polls indicate that as much as 32% of people are undecided, while another poll indicated that over half the population say that they do not truly understand the Treaty.
Cllr Sharkey said he was “concerned that many people may not get the opportunity to hear first hand of the detail in the Treaty and the opposing views, not to mention that they may not get to question the arguments that the Yes and No side will make. Some may not vote for this very reason.”

On Saturday May 12 Pearse Óg Hurling Club, is challenging players, supporters, family, friends and daredevils alike to take on the heights of the 14 storey, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dundalk. The event has been organised to raise much needed funds for juvenile teams. This year the club began training boys and girls from four years of age up to U14 with continued success thanks to the use of the fantastic facilities at the Muirhevnamor Astro Turf Pitch and with the recruitment of additional enthusiatic and experienced coaches. Pearse Og are giving people the opportunity to sign up for this unfor-
gettable challenge while raising money to provide hurleys, helmets and all the basic hurling equipment to enable these kids to learn the art of hurling. Special effort will be provided to foster self discipline, enjoyment, physical fitness and high standards of skill which will enable each child to mature into excellent all round players with a love for sport and Gaelic games. David Mulholland, Club Chairperson, is calling on the people of Dundalk to support the event. “This is a great opportunity to do something out of the ordinary with your Saturday and you’ll be helping the kids of the community.
“Events like these have always proved popular, and we have limited number of places for this unique challenge. We hope the people of Dundalk will do us proud and really get involved in this local event for a local club.” Anyone who wants to take part, and go back to work on Monday morning with an amazing story to tell, can sign up by contacting chairperson. pearseog.louth@gaa.ie or facebook.com/pearseoghurlingdundalk or call 0863890369. Minimum sponsorship is just €100. Sponsorship cards will be provided. The minimum age for this challenge is 18 years on the day of the event.
A 25-year-old woman who was involved in a hit and run accident outside town was banned from driving for 15 years. Sinead White with an address at 54, Casement Drive, Finglas was banned at the time of the accident and left the scene at Carrickedmond. She was sentenced to do a total of 240 hours community service in respect of not being insured and dangerous driving on May 8th 2010.
She was put back previously for a report to see whether she was suitable to do community service in lieu of six months jail and how she progressed on resolving an addiction problem. She admitted the offences and the facts were outlined on February 22nd last when it was stated she was driving a car that didn’t belong to her. Her barrister Irene Sands said she failed to stop properly at a junc-
tion and in shock left the scene Also she experienced “incredible difficulty” on account of a drug addiction. She said that the report was most favourable. Inspector John Foudy said that White received a seven year driving ban in 2006. Judge Hamill commented the defendant would face jail if she committed a similar offence again. He fixed bail for her to appeal.

once again, but they are determined to hold on to the title. According to Peter Brabazon, Programme

Eucharistic Bell visits Realt na Mara Dundalk Leader 25th April 2012
By Paul Byrne
DeafHear Dundalk combined a social outing with a fundraising night last Saturday April 21 at Dundalk Stadium with all proceeds going to the charity. As last year the event was a great success with members of the local deaf community coming out in force to enjoy a night at the races. DeafHear is a registered not-forprofit charity working to improve lives for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons and their families, and to support professionals and other organisations working in this area. One of the sponsored races on the night was The Long Walk Shopping Centre S0 400 which was won by Burnhill Flame in 21.73 by 1 ½ lengths and is owned by Michael Toal and trained by Aidan McVeigh.
The Eucharistic Congress Bell made its way to Realt Na Mara primary school on Monday morning as it continued its pilgrimage in advance of this year’s International Eucharistic Congress which takes place in June. The bell which has been fitted into a carrying frame, was brought into the main hall by pupils of Realt na Mara in advance of a short prayer service. The Eucharistic Bell began its pilgrimage around the diocese of Ireland on St Patrick’s Day 2011 and is a focal point for gathering and prayer in cathedrals, parish churches and schools all across the country. Prayers and singing were performed by pupils in Realt na Mara with all students having been thought the significance of the Eucharistic Bell in the weeks ahead of its arrival. Teachers at Realt na Mara said the school were honoured to be part of the Bells’ journey and commended the pupils for their interest Students from Realt Na Mara greet the Eucharistic Bell and participation in the event.
Ceol Oirghialla perform concert at DkIT Ceol Oirghialla, DkIT Choir and Orchestra will present a concert of Choral Music in the inspirational setting of the Church of the Holy Redeemer at Ard Easmuinn, Dundalk on Wednesday April 25th at 7.30pm. The 120 voice choir was founded in 2003, and since
Jesteśmy otwarci i zachęcamy innych młodych ludzi do współpracy i zabawy. Nasze spotkania odbywają się co tydzień, w czwartki, pomiędzy 18:30 a 21:00, Roden House – placówce Fundacji Apple Tree, gorąco zapraszamy młodzież między 12tym a 18tym rokiem życia. its first feisty performance in the Whitaker Theatre has come a long way, with a repertoire ranging from Brian Irvine’s commissioned work ‘Gullion Tales’, performed in Belfast’s Ulster Hall in 2010, to Handel’s ‘Messiah’, in the Redemptorist Church. The choir recently per-
formed a sacred cantata, ‘The Rose’, composed by its founding director Siubhán Ó Dubhain, a music lecturer in DkIT. Siubhán is full of praise and admiration for the current choir, and the commitment of the student members. ‘Since September, we have doubled choir rehearsal time,
at the request of the students, who really appreciate the whole department coming together to make such a magnificent sound.’ She singles out the current conductor, her colleague David Stalling as ‘an inspirational director’ who has done tremendous work over the past year, in
pursuit of choral excellence. The anchor work at Wednesday night’s concert will be the vivacious Vivaldi ‘Gloria’, one of the most popular works in the choral repertoire, and a set of sacred works ‘a capella’, which range from the Renaissance classic, ‘Justorum Animae’ by Lassus,

Lord Mayor honours Blackrock family By Eunan Whyte Story from Page 1 The extraordinary efforts of one Blackrock family have been recognised by Dublin’s Lord Mayor. Andrew Montague recently hosted a function in the Mansion House at which the O Donnachadha family were honoured after four members of the clan – Shannon (15), Rachael (14), Martin (11) aned Joe (8) - were selected to represent Ireland at karate. The unique achievement came about when all four members of the family won national titles in their respective age categories and all four having the honour of being selected to travel and represent Ireland at the forthcoming karate world championships to be held later this year. Whilst there, they were treated to a tour by the mayor of the historic residence, which was home to some notable individuals from Irish history such as Daniel O’Connell and where the first Dáil met and Irish Independence was formally declared. The tour was then followed by a bite to eat and a chat with the mayor where he congratulated them on their unique achievements and wished them well representing Ireland .

Vantastival 2012 – The count down is on to the summer’s first festival! Work is well underway on site at Bellurgan Park, Co. Louth, for Vantastival, which will take place over the May bank holiday weekend, May 4 to 6. With a new location this year, the festival crew are making the most of the natural materials at Bellurgan Park and are busy working on Vanhalla, a feature stage built from timber in the form of a Viking Longhouse. The stage will host a variety of acts over the weekend, including local hero Jinx Lennon and rising stars Ghost Estates and The Dirty Valentines, while doubling up as a venue for late night shenanigans after the music on the Main Stage has come to an end. Musicmaker Dublin will present a more chilled out line up of folk and electro in the Paddy Mirage marquee, a custom built timber-framed replica of Newgrange, with Dublin trio Swords and roots outfit I Draw Slow amongst those scheduled. The Open Mic Stage this year is set into a natural

amphitheatre in the landscape of the festival arena and is just one of the added attractions of Vantastival. The line up at Vantastival 2012 includes God is an Astronaut, Cathy Davey, The Original Rudeboys, Ham Sandwich, Frankie Gavin & DeDannan, Le Galaxie and RSAG, as well as a huge number of up-and-coming unsigned acts. Young innovators impress Young Social Innovators from O Fiaich College won €800 in funding yesterday when they pitched their social innovation ideas to business entrepreneurs in the Young Social Innovators (YSI) DEN. O Fiach College’s project is titled “2 Kool 4 Skool” and involves making the transition from primary school to secondary school easier for students and help students to prepare for class and exams thereby reducing school stress.
The students pitched their proposals to a panel of entrepreneur “Dragons” and throughout the month of March, Young Social Innovators (YSI) hosted eleven regional ‘Speak Out’ events. Up to 5,000 young people presented their ideas on how to solve issues affecting communities throughout Ireland, such as mental health, community facilities for the youth and the elderly, intergenerational initiatives, inclusion, obesity, drugs misuse and the
environment. A selection of just eleven projects were chosen to pitch to the “Dragons” in the YSI Den. Participating teams asked for the money, mentoring and resources they need to make their proposed project a success. Students from O’Fiaich College were delighted to receive €800 in funding which they will use to fund information booklets for schools and a starter pack for first year students.

The recent Easter activity schools for young people organised by the Youth Service of Co. Louth VEC during the school holidays proved to be a resounding success with both the cookery schools oversubscribed. In Dundalk, a full class of young cooks were kept busy creating delicacies such as iced cupcakes and malteser cheesecake,
as well as pizza, burgers and potato wedges. Teacher Gemma Murphy commented that, “the children were a pleasure to work with, and the school was great fun”. Due to demand the VEC is set to run the cookery and creative writing programmes again this summer. In addition, the VEC plans
to run beauty and makeup, dance and arts and crafts classes as part of their summer activity schools. The summer programme will run from late July and throughout August. Pictured are participants in the cookery course held recently in Dundalk.

KIA OPTIMA
The Optima, Kia’s long awaited new D segment saloon, has arrived in Ireland. Longer, lower, wider and with an extended wheelbase compared to previous D-segment offerings from Kia, the new sedan embodies what Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, calls “a bold, athletic and visual sporting energy”. The product concept behind the creation of this newcomer focuses on four key areas: standout styling – a unique exterior with a driveroriented interior; classleading performance – powerful and efficient engines with six-speed transmissions;superior packaging – new,
longer wheelbase platform; advanced features – high-tech premium options. “Having being largely absent in recent years from this important segment of the market we are delighted to be back with this very attractive sedan “ commented Kia Motors Ireland MD, James Brooks. “ We realise that this is an extremely competitive sector but we are confident that given the dynamic design and engineering of this model that Optima will soon emulate the success we have enjoyed in the A,B,C and Crossover segments with our Picanto, Rio, cee’d and Sportage models “ In Ireland the new car will be offered
in two trim levels both powered by a 134hp 1.7D engine. The entry level EX priced at €26,995 comes with a generous level of specification that includes 16” Alloy wheels, cruise control, voice activated Bluetooth, power lumbar support on the drivers seat, steering wheel audio controls and full size spare wheel. The Platinum model at €28,995 comes with a luxurious spec that includes all of the above plus: 17” alloys, panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery with heated front seats, reversing camera, driver memory seat, UV reducing glass, rains sensing front wipers and much more. The Platinum model is also available in Automatic at €32,695 and also with 18” alloy wheels at €29,495. Both trims as one would expect from Kia come with a generous level of passive and active safety equipment. The new Optima features an all-new body shell incorporating a large
percentage of ultra high-tensile steel and advanced structural engineering techniques that have proven their safety performance in numerous Kia models – enabling them to achieve a 5-Star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. Every Optima comes a four wheel disc braking system supported by ABS (anti-lock braking), ESC (electronic stability control) and VSM (vehicle stability management) systems as standard. To alert other motorists to emergency braking manoeuvres ESS (emergency stop system) is also fitted. Every Optima is also fitted with front, side and curtain airbags, plus front seat ‘active’ head restraints to minimize whiplash injuries. As with all Kia models sold in Europe, the newcomer will be offered to consumers with the manufacturer’s unique 7-Year / 150,000 km Kia Warranty, which is fully transferrable to subsequent owners.
