Carnival atmosphere for annual road races

They travelled far and wide to see the old steam engine roll into Dundalk last Thursday morning. But none travelled quite so far as Sean McGuinness who came all the way from North Carolina to see the 143-year-old steam train rumble into Clarke station. The 75-year old was born and reared in Dundalk living in Fairgreen until the age of 21. Like countless others in the 1950s and 60s Sean left Ireland and headed west to America. “I left Dundalk in 1958 and ended up in New York before eventually settling down in North Carolina. As a child living in Dundalk, I used to love the sound of the old steam engines coming into the station and I became very interested in them. “I remember going to

Dublin in 1957 when Louth won the All Ireland. I believe the train was a 171 engine called the’ Slieve Gullion”, Sean recalled. “So the steam train has always been close to my heart, I suppose. My sister who
lives in Dundalk rang me at home in North Carolina last week and told me that there was a steam train travelling from Belfast to Dublin and stopping in Dundalk for a few minutes. Continued on Page 10
They came, they saw, they conquered. Walkers, runners and joggers took on the roads of Dundalk on Wednesday evening as they took part and completed the third annual 10k and half marathon. Over 1000 hardy souls registered for the event with thankfully each and every one of them managing to complete the course. Dunleer’s Martin Quinn recaptured his 10K and Gary O’Hanlon won the Half Marathon, while Donna Evans and Aoife Parella scooped the Womens titles. See Pages, 8, 10, 14 & 21
