The Carroll Village saga looks set to continue as the Carroll Village Retail Management Services Ltd and Parol Ltd are suing Friends First, claiming that the owner of the former flagship Superquinn outlet is obliged to honour a ‘keep-open’ clause in the stores lease. They are seeking a court order against Friends First for damages caused by the cessation of trade and to force the pension company to reopen the flagship store. Friends First who bought the premises in 2007 along with five others say that they are not in the business of supermarket management and can only make attempts to

find a suitable company to take over the outlet. The case is centred around a keep-open clause in the lease contract, which was drawn up in 1999 which agrees that that the holder of the lease will keep the outlet open for 20 years. Superquinn was the original holder of the lease and when they closed the store as a cost cutting measure in 2007, it was later forced to reopen. Superquinn went into examinership in 2011 and was later bought by the supermarket chain Musgrave; however the Dundalk outlet was not a part of the deal and has remained closed ever since. Reality of property collapse highlighted by local estate Dundalk Leader 11th July 2012

By Niamh Kirk

The stark reality of the collapse in property prices from the highs of 2007 hit home this week when the partly-built Cairlinn Hall went up for sale. The site was believed to be sold for in the region of €23 million and had an approximate €7 million invested in its development

by Cavan based development company, Keelagh Homes. They developed much of the site but were put into receivership and the loans are now the responsibility of NAMA. It is now being sold with a guide price of €2.95 million, approximately one tenth its peak value. The estate includes 30 houses, most of which are

ready for snagging and living in –and foundations have been laid for a further 25. The planning permission was extended and now runs out in four year’s time. The 7.26 acre site being sold through Sherry FitzGerald Carroll and Brian Carroll, the estate agent for the sale, said that the receiver for the estate has done a huge amount of work

to improve the development for the people living there. He noted also there has been extensive ground work and infrastructural work carried out. The site went up for sale on Wednesday of last week and quickly generated a bit of interest “The site has been developed to an advanced stage. It is a great opportunity for someone,” said Mr Carroll.

There will be an evening of social dancing in Clan na Gael GFC, Ard Easmuinn Rd, Dundalk, on Friday July 20 with music by Show Bud. Dancing from 9.30pm to 12.30am. Admission is €10 and refreshments will be served.

line saying that there was a bomb at the youth centre and it was due to go off in 10 minutes. All calls to emergency services 999 are recorded. Gardai attended the scene immediately and a number of residents in the area were evacuated from their houses. Nothing was found in the area and residents were allowed to return to their homes but the hoax call is still being investigated. Hoax calls cost the taxpayer millions of euro each year and unnecessarily limit availability of services to those in genuine need of them. Hoax calls are illegal under the Post Office Amendment Act 1951 Section 13.

Rain makes life difficult for farmers By Paul Byrne

As Ireland continues to face one of the wettest summers in living memory, farmers around County Louth are battling the elements to ensure crops are sprayed and silage is harvested for the winter. Local spokesman, Seamus Lambe, said that farmers face a number of challenges due to the unprecedented levels of rain the country has experienced over the past couple of months. “Crops are a problem for a lot of farmers. With the ground being so soggy it can be hard to get heavy machinery into the Jimmy Cumiskey, sponsor of the Horse and Pony Competition, presenting the prize fields to spray the crops. Heavy tractors to the winners the the Co Louth Agricultural Show and trailers are getting stuck in the mud

Basketball team travel to Barcelona Kilsaran Dynamites U16 girls travelled last weekend to take part in the Barcelona Basketball Cup which was played in the 4000 seated Pavelló de la Mar Bella Olympic arena. Overall it proved to be a very successful trip for the local girls who played against three teams from Spain, and one from France. Dynamites did themselves proud on the court by winning two of their games against some very high quality opposition, to finish third in the competition. Dynamites will hold their second annual Basketball Camp from the August 16 to 18 for boys and girls under 10s up to under 19s. Anyone interested can log onto www.dynamites.ie and fill in the registration form online or contact Orla at 0872770121.

and it is proving difficult to get work done in such heavy ground. “I suppose the animals aren’t helping matters either as they are in the fields making the ground worse by walking across it all day.” explained Seamus. The quality of silage harvested this year has also been affected adversely due to the weather conditions. This will have negative affects for farmers in winter when they feed their animals. Last week the Irish Farmers Association estimated that the loss of output and costs of extra feeds could be as much as €100 million. David Redmond, owner of Corderry Fruit Farm, has described this summer as a ‘nightmare’ for his crops.

“It’s been an absolute nightmare for us so far with regards to the weather” said David. We had an awful bad year in 1985 but this has definitely been worse. There have been barely any dry days at all and the strawberries have been very poor so far. “The main season is just over now and we’re into a new season so we are hoping it picks up and we can get a few good days. We also had a lot of cold weather in March and that probably caused just as much damage to our fruit as the rain. It really has been a tough year.” explained David. The miserable summer shows no signs of easing up with further rain forecast for the remainder of the week.

Red Cross deal with ‘mayhem and destruction’ Scenes of mayhem and destruction took over Dundalk this weekend as the Red Cross recreated realistic accident scenes as part of this year’s FACE competition. A farm scene, complete with pitchforks in feet and hands trapped in tractor blades, an abseiling adventure in which two people had fallen and one hung unconscious and limp from a building, and a sword fight outside the town’s courthouse which had ended in an accidental impaling and a lot of fake blood. These are just some of the gory scenes that first aid teams from all over Europe were faced with over the weekend. The 22 teams, all members of Red Cross societies, were tasked with treating the injuries found in the simulated scenarios in the same professional manner that they would a real emergency scene. In their role as Red Cross volunteers team members are trained and experienced first aiders, many of them also work in medical

professions. The FACE competition on Saturday took place as part of the annual First Aid Convention in Europe, last year held in Venice and this year held in Dundalk. The convention was brought to Dundalk by the Irish Red Cross

who worked closely with local businesses and organisation to ensure that this year’s event would be unforgettable for the international participants and Dundalk alike. More than 800 participants, supporters and volunteers came to Dundalk for

the event bringing with them more than €150,000 worth of business to the local economy. Hotels, B&Bs, student accommodation and in some cases family homes were packed with Red Crossers over the two day event. Tom Horwell, Vice Chair-

man of the Irish Red Cross, said “FACE offered an opportunity to bring an international event to Dundalk. It has been a great event for the Red Cross whilst also giving a welcome boost to local tourism and economy.” Last night at a ceremony

in Dundalk Institute of Technology, Italy were named as the overall winners of FACE 2012 having received the highest scores during the competition. Germany won the Red Cross youth competition. Next year the event will be held in Austria.

Contrary to many rumours over the weekend, the winner of the €2 million jackpot prize has not come forward. The €4 euro quick-pick was sold on Saturday June 23 in Mace Stores on the Carrick Road and the owner remains a mystery. Time is ticking to collect the winnings with 72 days left before the winnings revert back to the lotto where it would make up the bonus to jackpots on occasions when an extra million or two is added to the ticket sales total as a special reward. The rumour-mill has been churning out supposed winners of the millions since it was announced that the ticket was sold in the town.

Dundalk man arrested over cigarette smuggling A 59-year-old Dundalk man has been arrested by officers from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) after they uncovered smuggled cigarettes in a van near Lis-

burn last week. HMRC officers, assisted by officers form the PSNI, seized 1.1 million duty free cigarettes that were being transported along the A1

near Lisburn. The haul is estimated to be worth around €378k (£300k) in unpaid excise duty and VAT, HMRC Assistant Director for Criminal Investiga-

tion, John Whiting, said that the availability of cheap cigarettes was a cause for concern. “These are low quality, unregulated cigarettes,

Judge defers sentence

NEW CHAIRPERSON: Cllr Jennifer Green chairing her first meeting of Dundalk Town Council.

Judge Flan Brennan deferred sentence on a 35 year-old father of three who was found on the premises of Rank Xerox with items of scrap. Security personnel came across two persons trespassing in the yard of the factory on June 23 last. Gardai were called and found the pair with a white plastic bag containing items of scrap from the yard. Bernard Joyce of Aghameen Park, Muirhevnamor pleaded guilty at Dundalk Court. Judge Brennan adjourned the case to November 7 to when another matter against the defendant was adjourned.

Carroll Village saga returns to court Continued from Page 1 Village, represented by R O’Neill, said that the closures had ‘decimated’ their rental income and are seeking compensation and for the store to be reopened. Friends First had enlisted Lisney, one of Irelands leading commercial real estate agents, to find a tenant for the outlet, as yet, to

no avail. A hearing took place in the High Court earlier this week where there was an application made to have the case transferred to the Commercial Court. Gareth Compton on behalf of Friend’s First argued that the issue was that of actual loss of rent which he estimated to be at

made exclusively for the black market and people should certainly be wary about buying them. “HMRC is determined to tackle this black market

trade and would remind everyone that it is a criminal offence to import, distribute or trade in duty free goods such as smuggled cigarettes and hand rolling tobacco. If

you are caught you can face criminal prosecution.” The man was released on bail pending further enquiries. Both the cigarettes and the van were seized.

Sixty sports clubs seek help There have been 60 applications from local clubs under the Sports Capital Programme this year, a record number according to Louth TD and Louth Football GAA Manager Peter Fitzpatrick. The clubs are seeking more than €4.7 million euro from the government to help keep their services going and to help develop. The total amount of funding being sought nationally is €224 mil-

lion but the available funding is only €30 million, €3 million less than last year. The applications are being processed and local clubs are expected to receive notification of applications shortly but it will not be until late autumn or early winter before the successful applications will be chosen. The Louth TD said “of course, every application in Louth won’t be successful. But a number

of clubs will certainly benefit from funding to help them with the buying of new equipment and the upkeep of facilities. A number of factors will be taken into account when assessing applications, including the likely benefit on participants, the level of disadvantage in the club’s area and whether facilities will be shared with other clubs. “Although there will be some refusals, I am hopeful that as many

clubs as possible in Louth can benefit from this very worthwhile funding. Final allocations will be made known by the Department as soon as decisions are made.” Speaking about the Sports budget in the Senade Fine Gael Senator Terry Brennan acknowledged the disappointment that many sports clubs will face but said “that’s the luck of the draw.”

Pepper spray is used to control melee on street Five defendants were sentenced to terms of community service ranging from 100 to 120 hours for their part in a melee that broke out when Gardai went to seize a car in town. Evidence regarding the incident that occurred on April 4 last year at Bridge Street was heard on May 23 last when two other defendants were fined and bound to the peace for their involvement. The charges against the other five were adjourned to last Wednesday’s sitting of Dundalk Court to assess their suitability to do community service. Reports were favourable,

Harry Mallon (21) Glenmore Park was placed under continued supervision to January as he was found unfit due to medical reasons. The seven admitted charges that comprised assault, obstruction of Gardai, producing a claw hammer and being drunk and threatening behaviour The court heard in May an occupant got back into the car and

encouraged others to do likewise. Others joined in and Garda assistance was needed with members of the group sitting on the vehicle and jumping up and down on it and kicking windows causing damage, it was stated. An attempt was made to take a baton from a Garda Sergeant, and pepper spray had to be used to curtail one of the defendants. A claw hammer was taken off another. The door was opened of a patrol car to try to free one of the women and attempts made to kick Gardai. One of the defendants escaped but was arrested nearby.

Dundalk FC have once again appealed to fans of the club to help them out as they continue to battle against the prospect of financial collapse. Speaking ahead of last night’s ‘Save our Club- Dundalk FC Supporters meeting’ club representative Dean Arrowsmith urged the people of Dundalk to act now if they wanted to ensure the club survived. “Unfortunately, due to reasons beyond the control of the supporters of Dundalk FC, our club is a matter of weeks away from financial collapse which would spell

an end to League of Ireland football in Dundalk. “We are one town, one team. We will not stand idly by and watch the club we love collapse. The meeting was called to discuss possible fundraising initiatives which will ensure that Dundalk FC sees out this season and to lay the foundations for the long-term financial stability of the club”, explained Dean. The club have also announced a number of fundraisers including a friendly with a Chelsea XI on August 14 and a Gala night in September which will feature Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

The very real dangers facing Dundalk FC’s existence were demonstrated last month when Monaghan Utd pulled out of the league due to their financial difficulties. Last week, Dundalk manager Sean McCaffrey was told that the club’s weekly budget would need to be reduced by €2000 leaving a weekly spend of €4000. Reacting to the news, Monaghan native McCaffrey indicated that the budget cuts and the prospect of his best players leaving during the current transfer window meant keeping the club in the Premier Division would be ‘mission impossible’.

Wszyscy byli świetni, doskonale przygotowani i w pełni zaangażowani, my jednak wciąż liczymy najbardziej na licealistów z Bydgoszczy. Agnieszka Boniewicz

Jobless numbers on increase By Niamh Kirk

The number of people on the live register in County Louth has been increasing significantly over the past three months. The most recent figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show there are 18,242 people in the County on the live register in June, up 886 from May and 723 up from April. The unemployment rate in the county is the same as the national average which climbed to 14.9% last month. The County now has the fifth highest unemployment rate in the Eurozone. Opposition leader Gerry Adams pointed the finger at failing government policy for the increasing rate of unemploy-

ment. In a statement released last week the Sinn Fein Leader said that the government had failed to effectively address the issue of job creation.

The Louth TD stated that the social consequences of this for families and communities in Louth and especially our young people is evident in the new stealth taxes and in the numbers of businesses, shops and pubs that are closing. Small indigenous business, including small farmers, with no real support from the government or credit from the banks, are going under. The government’s policies are proving to be a significant obstacle to recovery and growth. There are alternative policies and strategies which can provide jobs and ease the burden on citizens. However this government is obsessed with austerity and refuses to abandon its failed strategies.

Joint search for fuel marker

A joint search by the Revenue Commissioners and HM Revenue and Customs is underway for a new marker for fuels. The hope is that the new marker will combat the growing diesel washing trade and in turn reduce the amount of the toxic biproduct from the removal of the current dye marker being dumped. The Local Authorities have already exported over 314 tonnes of the waste to Germany for treatment. Last year the Louth County Council spent almost €1m cleaning up after criminals dumped 989 tonnes in 2011. While the funds are recovered through the department of the Environment the expenditure puts undue strains on the council’s cash flow, effecting services. Illegal diesel laundering yields

a high return from criminals and incidents of dumping the toxic waste have dramatically increased. In 2009 the council exported 72 tonnes of the toxic material, the number of cases of dumping rose exponentially in 2010 to 220 tonnes. In 2011 the council was forced to spend over €1million on the clean-up of more than 1005 tonnes of dumped sludge. The Irish and UK revenue authorities published a joint ‘Invitation to Make Submissions’ (IMS) on June 28, which set out details of how this process will run. Following the strengthening last year of the conditions governing the sale of road fuel, Revenue implemented a programme of action against filling stations operating without a licence or in breach

of licence conditions but are hoping that a viable alternative will be available soon. Revenue Commissioner Liam Irwin said: “Fuel laundering and trading in illicit fuel represents a significant threat to the Exchequer and hurts legitimate businesses. We are determined to take every action necessary to stamp out this form of criminality. It is a problem common to both Ireland and the UK and the search for a more resistant marker will be an important element in combatting this form of evasion.”. The Revenue advise the public to purchase their diesel from known branded outlets, and where they have any concerns or suspicions about a particular outlet to report these to Revenue or the Irish Petrol Retailers Association.

Tibetan vocalist to grace The Store

Haunting performances, spine tingling vocals and the ability to enchant audiences are some of the praises given to world renowned Tibetan vocalist Yungchen Lhamo, who is set to appear in the Spirit Store on July 14. Her songs explore Buddhist themes of spiritual pilgrimage, soul searching, and a delight in the natural environment as well as peace, and finding one’s own beliefs--she hopes to share Tibet’s rich cultural heritage and the innate grace and goodness of the Tibetan people with Dundalk. Following the 1995 release of her breakthrough album, Tibetan Prayer, which won the ARIA Award - Australia’s equivalent of the Grammy Award Yungchen was signed to Peter Gabriel’s

prestigious Real World Records label and has since released three albums: Tibet, Tibet in 1996, Coming Home 19898 and Ama in 2006. Best known for her a cappella performances, Yungchen has also collaborated with luminaries such as Natalie Merchant, Philip Glass, Annie Lennox, Michael Stipe, Billy Corgan and Sheryl Crow Irish musician Donal Lunny will also perform on the night. Donal is the founding member of some of Irelands most important bands Planxty, Bothy Band, Moving Hearts - has produced some of the most important albums of the traditional music revival since the ‘70s. There will be lots of activities on the day ranging from teddy bears picnic, bouncing castles, face painting, barbeque, and music. There is a kids run also led by An Grianan’s own ‘Bear In The Woods’. All are invited to take part on the day and join in the fun while helping to raise money for a worthy cause.

Local duo head to Romania for Crosscause The locally based Crosscause charity has just sent a consignment of goods to their Casa Bridget project in Romania. Ciaran Phillips, from Part Worn Tyres, and David McArdle (pictured), from McArdle Transport, who not only drove but he sponsored the trailer, were the men behind the latest trip. They arrived last week and spent a number of days unloading the precious cargo of food, medical and building supplies. Crosscause would like to thank everybody who gave supplies, despite these difficult times,

as the ceaseless generosity of the local people continues to astound.

Businesses and individuals all helped out with food parcels and transport.

wind farm at Rockmarshal, which were made both to Louth County Council and an Bord Pleanala. The Group has had to engage a number of specialist consultants to examine the detailed documents submitted by the applicant, Gaelectric Developments Ltd. Louth County Council refused planning permission but the applicant has appealed this decision to An Bord Pleanala. The specialist consultants have confirmed in their detailed technical reports that the group’s concerns in relation to the turbine size, their impact on the homes of local residents, their impact on the landscape, the extent of shadow flicker and other

concerns have been well founded. They cast serious doubt over related submissions made by the applicant. This has been an expensive process and local residents and businesses have to date contributed a significant amount of money which has covered a major part of the costs incurred. The purpose of this “Fun Walk” is to help cover the balance of the costs incurred. Tickets which cover the walk and the barbeque cost €10 per person (children free) and can be purchased from John Collins (087 7821918) and in advance, or on the day, at Fitzpatrick’s Restaurant.

Fun Walk for Rockmarshal funds

On Sunday July 15 a fun walk of Rockmarshal Mountain, organised by Protect Rockmarshal Mountain Group will take place. It starts at 3 pm from the car park of Fitzpatrick’s Restaurant and will return there for a barbeque. To ensure that everyone can participate there will be an hour long walk to suit all family members, while those who feel energetic can opt for a more strenuous walk. Walking boots will be essential for the latter. The organisers, Protect Rockmarshal Mountain Group, are raising much needed funds towards the cost of their submissions objecting to the development of a

Over to you Does all this rain we’re having get you down?

Dundalk Leader 11th July 2012

Jeremiah Aigbodian Not really. I’m used to it at this stage. Ireland has always had a lot of rain so it’s not really a surprise.

Ann Campbell It’s very depressing altogether. Waking up to grey skies almost every day of the summer isn’t very nice at all.

Passengers safe after bus catches fire

A bus travelling from Dublin to Dundalk caught fire while travelling down the M1 early Tuesday morning. The driver 6.40 Bus Eireann passenger coach noticed smoke coming from the

bus at the M1 toll booths near Drogheda. He pulled the bus over immediately and evacuated the 11 passengers on board. The bus driver then walked the passengers to safety at the toll

booth where a replacement coach collected them and finished the journey. None of the passengers were hurt. Two fire engines attended the scene.

Lucille Coleman

Annette Ferguson

This is Ireland. People should know what to expect at this stage. One thing that is depressing is the effect it has on the flowers in the garden. I love a nice garden on a lovely summers day.

My attitude is, I can’t change it so I should just get on with things. There’s no point giving out about it and making yourself angry.

Jordan O’Reilly No it doesn’t get me down. I’ve lived in Ireland long enough at this stage not to expect lovely summers.

Young and old work together Co. Louth VEC has embarked on a unique collaborative project with the Centre for Affective Solutions for Ambient Living Awareness (CASALA) based at the Netwell centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT). Students from four VEC schools – St. Oliver’s Community College, Scoil Uí Mhuirí, O’Fiaich College and Bush Post-primary School - will work with the residents of the Great Northern Haven in Dundalk on a project which will examine issues common to both young and old residents of Co. Louth. Great Northern Haven is a purpose-built development in Dundalk town centre of 16

smart apartments constructed specifically for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications. Fifteen of the apartments are occupied by older residents who are actively engaged in research projects with DkIT. The development is managed by CASALA, an organisation whose aim is to collaborate and engage with industry, care givers and older people to help deliver timely assistance and quality care in the home and the community through technological advances. The focus of the collaborative project will be to bring Transition Year students and residents of the Great Northern Haven together as co-designers of a software application that

will address a health and wellbeing issue that is common to both groups. Participants will be engaged in the process of designing apps for either mobile phones or tablet IT devices such as the iPad. Co. Louth VEC is currently running a project across all of its schools that will eventually see school bags replaced with students’ own personal IT devices. The project starts this September in O’Fiaich College with iPads for teachers and Transition Year students. This latest initiative with CASALA will complement this development and will provide students with skills and experience in app development, a growing area in Ireland’s IT industry.

Dundalk Court heard that a 32-year-old local man who left the scene of an accident and was over the drink driving limit , suffered depression after the break-up of his marriage and began to drink heavily. Solicitor, Andrew Wiseman, described that Gavin Allen of Bellewsbridge Road found himself “in disarray” after the break-up. He said the defendant admitted responsibility for the material damage accident in which he

was involved in October last. He was fully insured. There was no serious injury caused with the impact relatively minor. Judge Flan Brennan fined the defendant €200 and banned him from driving for two years in respect of the drink driving offence. He also fined him €100 for failing to keep his vehicle at the scene. The accident occurred on October 1 last. Garda Inspector Martin Beggy said when the Gardai arrived at

Castletown Road the offending vehicle had left the scene. They were made aware where it was and located the defendant who was arrested for suspected drink driving. He underwent an intoxilyser test which showed he had an alcohol concentration of 117. He was asked for insurance and driving licence which he failed to produce, but were in order. The injured party was fully compensated. The defendant had previous convictions.

Dundalk FC lease up for sale By Paul Byrne

The board of Dundalk FC have issued an invitation to interested parties to contact them regarding the sale of the club’s long term lease. The club has been struggling financially for some time raising fears that the 108 year old club could go out of business. The call for expressions of

interest detailed the club’s ample assets describing the clubs as “a very well known football club that has won many league and cup titles and represented the League of Ireland in European competition playing against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers, Ajax, Porto, and more recently Levski Sofia.”

It also noted the newly constructed multi million euro Youth Development Centre which is comprised of three indoor

astro-turf pitches, a sprung sports floor for various sports, bars, lounges, a coffee bar, a fully equipped gym, function rooms, dressing rooms, toilets, a lift and 153 underground car parking places. The four acre Hiney Park which is also connected with the club is also up for grabs. The deadline for submissions is July 30.

and live alongside local people in local communities in some of the most deprived countries of the world. EIL campaigns to make a difference by promoting global justice, human rights, fair trade, debt relief and greater equality and respect among the peoples of the world. Melissa said, “I really can’t wait to get there and see what it is like. I think it will be a really good experience and I am looking forward to meeting my host family and the children I will be caring for”.

at Market Square Cllr Jennifer Green, Cathaoirleach, Dundalk Town Council, performed the official opening on Thursday July 5 at an event which was also attended by Kevin Moriarty of Fáilte Ireland. The office will remain open on a five days per week basis throughout the year. It had originally been housed in this Market Square location a number of years ago before transferring to Jocelyn Street. Speaking on the opening of the Tourist Information Office at the Market Square, Cllr Green said “Dundalk’s Tourist Information Office is back where it belongs, at the Market Square. Opening five days a week throughout the year means we can promote Dundalk and the

rest of the county in the most positive light to visitors. Of course, if they are travelling on throughout the country, the Tourist Information Office also has the most up to date information on attractions and accommodation. “Combining the Tourist Office with the BIDS location has been a tremendous idea as it gives a further opportunity to promote local business and services.” Michael McCabe, Louth Local Authorities added that the re-opening of the Tourist Information Office at the Market Square is yet another part of an intensive plan to promote Louth as an accessible destination with much to recommend it.

Adams wants Minister to address ‘extensive delays’ for claimants Local TD and Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has written to the Minister for Social Protection, Labour’s Joan Burton, calling on her to address ‘extensive delays’ in claiming disability allowances in Co Louth. The local TD said that he has noted an increase in the number of claimants calling into this constituency office in Dundalk seeking help in respect of welfare claims. Deputy Adams cited the

case of one man who has made claim for disability allowance over 18 months ago that has yet to be fully addressed. Among the issues that were identified causing this remarkable delay was that it took the Department to the Social Welfare more than six months to send out forms that were necessary to the success of the claim. He said “In an age of instant communication via the

internet and internal computer systems it beggars belief that it required six months for papers on an appeal to be handed over. I have asked the Minister to confirm whether this six month delay is typical or average for these cases. “Social welfare, lone parent, disability allowance and other similar payments are there to help individuals and families in need. It is unacceptable that the processes

that are in place to help are in reality obstructing that help.” A spokesperson from the department of social protection claimed that the average time taken to award an application for disability allowance in 2011 was 17 weeks. They said that “entitlement to disability allowance is based on satisfying medical, means and residency conditions. In determining entitlement to the

allowance there are, in certain cases, unavoidable time lags involved in making the necessary investigations and enquiries to enable accurate decisions to be made.” However, in an effort to improve services a modernisation project is currently underway and it includes the development of information technology functions and associated business process re-organisation. The Department of Social Protection

said that they anticipate “the new system will introduce significant processing efficiencies and a quicker and more responsive service to the customer.” The department admitted that a short term negative impact was expected as the new computer system was installed but a transfer to the new processing system, which started in January, will not be complete until the end of year.

100 years of electricity By Niamh Kirk WITH lampposts at regular intervals all throughout Dundalk, it is hard to imagine the area becoming submerged in darkness come sundown. However in 1831 the streets of Dundalk were declared “unpaved and unlit during the hours of darkness”, and the then Town Commission were charged with making the area accessible by night. The effort culminated in the opening of the area’s first power station and street lamps 100 years ago this year. The centenary of this remarkable event took place last week and was marked with a reproduction of Canice O’Mahony’s book The History of Dundalk Urban District Council (UDC) with a foreword by the then Dundalk Town Council Chairperson Cllr Marianne Butler. The book, first published

At the launch of the book Dundalk Urban District Council Power station were Cllr Mark Dearey, Cllr JIm Ryan, Cllr Marianne Butler and Canice O Mahony, author

in 2004, chronicles the history of the introduction to the area of something often taken for granted – a regular supply of electricity. The book is a fascinating look into the history of the area through the prism of the UDC’s introduction of electricity. It displays Dundalk’s infrastructural development beginning with the quaint images of Mr Carraher, the town

lamp-lighter who made his rounds night and morning tending to the towns oil lamps to the introduction of Gas powered lighting and then on to how the first electrical power station was built by the then UDC and the network extended throughout Dundalk. The station itself was very much a local effort with JS McGahon Architects designing the building. The book itself

is filled with anecdotes and insights into the Dundalk of yesteryear. The event was attended by councillors Marianne Butler, Jim Ryan and Mark Dearey, Town Manger Frank Pentony and former councillor and DTC Chair Seamus Keelan as well as the author Canice O’Mahony and his wife. Mr Keelan noted that while there were a few small hydro systems in place in Dundalk at the time, the power station ranked as one of the most important projects undertaken by the then Urban District Council of Dundalk in the 20th Century. “As the former chairman of Dundalk Town Council and a member of the council for 15 years and having worked in the ESB all my working life, I was delighted to see Canice record the history of the council’s power station” he said.

Success for Ardee Concert Band in Cork

On Saturday July 7, 40 members of Ardee Concert Band took part in the South of Ireland Band Competitions, which are held annually in Clonakilty, Co Cork. It was worth the trip, as they took second prize for the second year in a row. Twenty-four bands entered the competitions, eleven in the Senior Section, which was won by Dublin Concert Band beating

Ardee by only one point. The prize for the Best Percussion section was won by Ardee percussion section, Niall Doherty, Paul and Annamaria O’ Brien. This was an entertainment type of competition, each band had to do a 15 minute programme of their own choice, the only stipulation was each band must perform a march. Ardee’s

choice was the March “Punchinello”, a Latin American style piece ”Malaguena” followed by the “Derry Air” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee” a New Orleans jazz style piece. The band were the last performance of the day and brought the house down with a little comic sketch in the middle of their last piece, Just a Closer Walk With Thee. A special mention must go to the band

members who took on the acting roles, Mark McLoughlin who played dead but came to life again, to Sean O Brien who played the representative of the IMF and to Peter McKeever who played the doctor. This piece also included a Dixieland sextet and they were Oisin Clarke, James Walsh, Jenny McKeever, Nicky Callan, Paul O Brien and lastly Niall Doherty.

Wedding showcase The Boyne Valley Hotel & Country Club in Drogheda held a Wedding Showcase on Sunday July 1 from 4pm to 7pm. The event, which was attended by over 70 people, was an opportunity for ‘brides and grooms to be’ to experience the venue as it would be on

their wedding day. On arrival, all couples were welcomed with a complementary glass of sparkling wine and canapés. During the event, engaged couples were invited for a full showaround of the excellent wedding facilities by a representative of the

TOP OF THE CLASS FOR KIA

Which? magazine has named Kia as its Best car Manufacturer for 2012 in its annual awards, praising the company’s “superb new range of cars” as well as the brand’s excellent value for money and “industry-leading” seven year warranty. At the presentation of the award a Which? spokesman stated: “This is the first time Kia has made the short-list and to walk off with the title is a

significant achievement.” He went on to praise Kia for being one of the top ranked brands in the 2012 Which? Car survey for both customer satisfaction and reliability. Kia beat off competition from BMW, Hyundai, Skoda and Toyota to take the prize. Which? said in its commendation: “Kia’s new Rio, Sorento and Picanto have all impressed in our Test Lab, while the new cee’d and Op-

tima get the thumbsup from our initial road tests. Compared to where it was just five years ago, we feel that Kia is the most improved car brand around.” A Kia Motors spokesperson commented on the award: “We are absolutely delighted to win this award - especially at the first attempt. It marks the culmination of several years of hard work by our designers, engineers and by our dealers who are as

committed as we are to give our customers an outstanding buying and ownership experience. We see this as a great honour as Which? has a long history of championing the consumer and being remarkably thorough in its testing process.” Kia now have a model for all tastes and budgets: Picanto, Venga, Soul, Rio, Cee’d, Optima, Sportage and Sorento. Top marks Kia !
