Local girl hopes to follow Taylor’s lead By Paul Byrne

Wednesday’s jubilant scenes in Bray as Katie Taylor realised her Olympic dream could soon be repeated on the streets of Dundalk if O’Hanlon Park Club boxer CJ McGuinness has her way. Dundalk girl CJ may be just 14 years old yet she is already a double national champion and has been widely tipped to follow Katie Taylor’s path to greatness. As she trains in O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club in Dundalk, coach Eddie Lawless says that CJ showed potential from the very first time she walked through the clubs doors. “She’s been with us here since we opened our doors eight or nine years ago and she had potential from the

very start. She’s very strong and has a great attitude towards the sport. Right now she is probably the best 14 year old female boxer in the country.” CJ says that she developed a love for boxing at a young age which has grown stronger as the years have gone by. “I probably put my first pair of boxing gloves on at four years of age. My granddad was a boxer so that was probably where I first got the idea to get into a ring. “I’ve been training in O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club for nearly ten years now and I love it. You get to meet friends who you wouldn’t have met otherwise and it’s a great way of staying fit”, enthused CJ. CJ’s boxing skills have seen her become one of the most Continued on Page 5

Olympic dreams may blossom in velodrome By Paul Byrne

The Olympic Games are always an inspirational time encouraging many to take up a new sport, get back

into one once played at school or to just get fitter. It’s easy to catch the bug for a sport you found exciting. One of Ireland’s medal hopefuls was cy-

clist Michael Irvine and Great Britain had some historic achievements like Chris Hoey’s sixth Olympic Gold in the velodrome which could see you get caught the cycling bug. Perhaps it could be the start of something for local athletes as Cuchulainn Cycling Club have applied for planning permission to build a 250m outdoor velodrome near Hoey’s Lane, similar spec to the one seen in Olympics over the past two weeks. If planning for the track is granted it will be one of four velodromes

in Ireland but the only one built to international standards. Currently competitive Irish cyclists

travel abroad to train and usually it’s farther afield than the neighbouring UK tracks as the inter-

est in the sport is so high there they it proves difficult to get any significant track time there. While offering the highest standards the track is not being built for elite athletes but is for developing the cycling community in Dundalk says Cuchulainn cycling PRO Karl Dolan. Cuchulainn are already involved in local schools to help foster safe cycling and hope that the velodrome will give grass roots cyclists with more platforms to engage in the sport. All the sports that were held at the Olympic Velo-

Dundalk Tidy proving the appearance Towns are launching an of the town. The committee, in initiative aimed at imconjunction with Dundalk Leader and Dundalk FM, are calling on the public to come up with ideas they would like to see implemented in order to make the town more attractive. The initiative is drawing inspiration from the example of Joe McEntee who in many ways promoted the ideas of Tidy Towns before concept came into being.

Joe McEntee from Dublin Street was a man ahead of his time, a railway man first and foremost he saw the need in the 1940s and 50s to develop facilities for the young. He developed St Joseph’s Boys Club, St. Joseph’s Football Club with its own grounds next to Oriel Park in the 1940s. The club had snooker tables, bicycle outings, pitch and putt and table tennis competitions. Joe also or-

ganised a fife and drum band which played at ‘Joe’s Variety Shows’ and marched up and down the town on special occasions. Following his election in the early 50s as an independent councillor his new goals incorporated plans and proposals to the appearance of our town. He was the forerunner to Dundalk Tidy Towns all of sixty years ago and after he died in 1967, the council plant-

drome including single and team pursuit and time trails would all take place at the cycle track. The club will have the necessary equipment available for rent and they hope to see more people get involved in the sport. The equipment is quite different to a road bike as it has no gears and no breaks, so it is also much cheaper. But it is not just the speed-loving cyclists that will benefit from the track if it goes ahead but budding BMX riders will be able to use their purpose built 306m track.

This facility should see the cyclist numbers in the area swell if the Rathoath precedent is anything to go by. There a BMX track was built and saw it become the fastest growing cycling club in the country taking on more than 600 cyclists in just two years. Cuchulainn Cycling Club are already among the country’s top clubs but if the velodrome gets the green light it could see them escalate to the top club in the country. Decisions on funding and planning are expected to be made by October.

Local Venturers cross the Arctic Circle The Dundalk Venturer Section for scouts between the ages of 15 to 18 years, returned from their annual expedition recently, which saw them form part of the 100 strong Irish contingent at Roverway 2012 in Finland, an event for scouts and guides from all over the world. The venturers flew into Helsinki via Stockholm in Sweden, before catching an overnight train to Rovaneimi in Lapland. Roverway was split into many different paths which took place all over Finland, and each path had about 50 participants. The venturers shared a path with Finnish, German, Czech, English and Spanish scouts and guides. They spent four nights on the path together, hiking in the Lapland region carrying all gear and equipment. Over the course of the four days the adventurous venturers got to cross the Arctic Circle, experience a Finnish sauna, play traditional Finnish games like wife carrying and mo-

bile phone throwing, experience the 24 hours of daylight (which made it tricky trying to sleep in a tent) and of course no trip to Lapland would be complete without visiting Santa Claus, who despite being at the end of July was very busy.

The Group then headed South for Evo campsite, about one hour outside Helsinki, where all 5000participants converged for another four nights of camping. It was here that the venturers were united with Michelle Boyle, a beaver leader

from St. Patrick’s Scout Group who was part of the International Service Team(IST) and whose job it was to keep the 5000 participants fed and watered. At the campsite, there were many activities for the venturers to par-

ticipate in such as a water obstacle course, chainsaw carving, climbingg wall, whittling, waterslide, car bash-c ing, tightrope walkin g and a bouncyA castle to name just a few. As thes camp was for 15 to 24 year olds thet social aspect was very important and( every night there were bands, DJsc from around the world and many l other forms of entertainment that m continued on into the early hours of the morning. The adventure continued with at trip to St. Petersburg in Russia, andc stayed there for three nights. in the future. I’ll just keep on working hard and hopefully one day I’ll get my chance” adds CJ. CJ will be 18 when the next Olympics come around in Rio in 2016. Direct contact with colleges is recommended to see what is available on unfilled courses. The Exam Helpline will provide advice to students on course options and help point the way forward for students in doubt.” he added. “What students must not do is panic. There are always options and even though it may seem as

Kids inspired by Olympics Children taking part in the summer camp

By Paul Byrne

The Olympics may have finished but it seems that they have inspired a group of young Dundalk children to keep themselves fit this summer. Children from between the ages of 5 and 7 took part in a summer fit camp last week in the CBS primary school as part of the fit kids summer camp run by Niall Teather.

The aim of the camp is to encourage young children to keep active and to help develop good health and fitness habits for life. The week long summer camp was enjoyed by twenty four young kids who were put through their paces in a fun environment which included space hoppers, tumbling equipment and fitness mats. Niall Teather from Fit Kids further explained the benefits of keeping a child fit and healthy.

Some of the children who were taking part in the summer camp last week

“Our programmes teach children the six fundamentals of fitness: flexibility, agility, balance, co-ordination, strength and endurance. “Our aim is to give children a love of being active through our fun fitness skilled-based, age appropriate classes, camps and parties encouraging them to become fit and health conscious adults explained Niall.

Brendan is a pitch and putt sensation By Paul Byrne

Brendan Lawlor’s star is on the rise with the teenage pitch and putt sensation picking up another prestigious title last month. Not content with winning numerous Leinster titles in his own age group, 15 year old Brendan entered this year’s adult Leinster Intermediate Strokeplay tournament as he tested himself against the very best in the province. Brendan gave a masterclass in Navan as he beat all before him to take home the top prize. The Louth Village teenager honed his considerable skills at the Channonrock pitch and

putt course where he has been playing since he turned six years old. However, Brendan’s rise to the top hasn’t occurred overnight. He has been known on the circuit for a while, picking up Leinster in-

dividual titles as well as being a part of the successful Louth team that recently retained their provincial title. Proud parents Billy and Marie first bought Brendan a golf club at the age of four with the

youngster immediately falling in love with the game. “He’s always been chipping balls around the garden for as long as we can remember really” says Marie. “He took to it straight away and it was obvious from a pretty early stage that he had a special talent. His short game is unbelievable and he’s very calm under pressure which is a great asset in competitions. “I also have to say that the pitch and putt club in Channonrock have always been very supportive towards juveniles over the years and they have produced a number of outstanding young talents.” she explains.

Brendan’s father Billy is understandably proud of his son’s achievements and puts it down to Brendan’s calm and modest manner. “He’s a very competitive young fella but he’s got a very calm head on his shoulders and never lets a bad shot affect him too much. He’s got great touch around the greens and is a fantastic putter so I suppose if you put all that together you’ve got a pretty good player on your hands” says Billy. As well as being a whizz on the pitch and putt course, Brendan is also a very capable golfer and is a member of Ardee Golf Club where he can regularly

Teen charged with burglary A 17-year-old local youth was remanded back in custody on a charge of house burglary at the Castleross estate in town on July 31 last. Bail was fixed, but he was not in a position to take it up, his solicitor Niall Lavery told the holiday sitting of Dun-

dalk Court on Thursday. The case was adjourned to the regular sitting on September 6. with consent to bail as fixed in the sum of self €100 and independent surety of €800 or two of €400. A co-accused is due before the court on the same date, it was stated.

Mr Lavery requested an early hearing date in view of the defendant’s age, stating that he was contesting the charge. M. Lavery also asked for statements as soon as possible. Garda Inspector Martin Beggy said the file was almost completed

and he would be able to supply statements by this Friday Judge Hamill put the case back for the DPP to give his directions and the defendant to elect where he wished to be tried and either enter a plea or for a date to be fixed for a hearing.

Dundalk team perform well in Carlingford Louth relay

Competitors who took part in the Carlingford Lough Relay

The fourth battle of Carlingford Lough Relay swim took place on Sunday August 5 and saw a team from Dundalk turning in a very impressive performance. In the driving wind and rain the teams braved the harsh conditions to battle their way to Warrenpoint which is 8km of rough seas, with Dundalk represented by Paul Waters, David Kildeas, Stephen Kildeas and Andreas Kildeas. The battle was set from the off to be a clinker. The Dundalk team set a grueling pace from the word go. The two other teams Newry Tri and Camlough Lake swim-

mers could not match the pace. It took a bit of a warm up before the two northern teams could come to grips with the sea conditions and the pace. The swim is not just about fast swimmers there is a raft of tactics to work out the best route through the currents, tides and choppy conditions. As time went by and the change over of each swimmer took place the teams where neck and neck after about 45 minutes. The Camlough Lake swimmers started to pull away from the two other teams with the help of their secret weapon Aine

McCreesh. But the Dundalk team didn’t give up and pulled back the gap more than once to take it back to neck and neck and so to did the Newry Tri team closing the gap all the time. But at the end it was just too much for the other teams to hold onto the toes of the Camlough lake swimmers Mickey Lynch, Neill McDonald, Aine Mccreesh and Legend Milo McCourt with boat man Padraig Mallon coming into Warrenpoint in a blistering time of 1hour 50min sharply followed by Dundalk and Co team in two hours and two minutes.

Toxic sludge dumped By Niamh Kirk

There has been another spate of toxic sludge dumping in Louth County Louth as the County Council have again been forced to clean up after criminals dumped more than 12 containers of the noxious fluid at four locations around the north of the county. The first two containers were discovered on Thursday August 9 on the Castleblayney Road close to where road works are taking place. They were dumped there during the night. Two more containers were found close to Doran’s Pub on the Castlebellingham to Drogheda road. A further two containers were also

located near Richardstown Castle, Dromin. Louth County Council and their contractors had all the material cleared by close of business on the same day. But the next day they were faced with even more of the toxic sludge to clear as more containers were found at the same locations. Six IBCs were located at at Dorians Pub on the Drumcar Road, two at Dromin Church. Again two were at the same place as the previous day near Richardstown Castle, Dromin. And a further two were found just off the Ardee Link Road at the Cattle Mart. Council Staff responded promptly to clear the containers of sludge.

Dundalk cyclists take to the Alps

The club’s cyclists at the top of the infamous Tour de France climb Alp D’Huez

Cuchulainn Cycling Club’s recent trip to the France proved a great success. Jimmy Flynn, a previous visitor to the Alps, led the way on many of the climbs but closely followed by Annette Dawe, Ray Fedigan and Aimhirghin O Brannagain. Jason Boyle once again showed what he is made of, topping his previous exploits on the Mizen to Mailn and Tour of Scotland trips by sailing up the fa-

mous Tour de France Cols, such as Alp D`Huez and Col de Galibier. Meanwhile Terry McEneaney showed that his success in the off road league has transferred over to the road as he negotiated the climbs with skill and panache. Niall Clarke, not content with just doing the club spins, entered a local non competitive sportive and spent 10 hours in the baking sun tackling what

most have included every climb in the range. Once again the riders’ tipped their collective hat to Padraig Kelly for organising an excellent trip and surely he is already planning ahead for 2013. Following on from the successful staging of the Bull Run in Bellurgan Park the club is hosting another National Championship event on the weekend of August 18/19 with the running of the Juniors and

Vets Time Trial and Road Race Championships. There will be quite a few medals up for grabs and most noteworthy competitor will be junior Ryan Mullen. Recently Mullen took a silver medal at the Junior European Time Trial Championships in Holland. He is the defending junior National Champion and will be keen to reclaim his crown at Dundalk over the weekend.

Choral group back in full voice The Nestling Choral Group will be back in training on Monday September 3. This fun group of older men and women from Dundalk come together every week to sing a wide range of old and new songs. Musical instruments provide

QUESTION: Has Katie Taylor’s Olympic victory changed your opinion of women’s boxing?

Debbie Gray I never had a problem with women boxing. If that’s what they want to do, let them at it. I watched all Katie’s fights and I thought she was fantastic.

Owen McDonnell I think boxing is a vocation to be honest. It doesn’t matter what gender you are. I was delighted to see Katie lift the nation in these rather gloomy times.

Bernard Hayes I was always OK with women boxing. To be honest I thought she didn’t get as much publicity as some of our other sports stars over the last few years. That will all change now though I’d say.

Why should anybody have a problem with women boxing? Sure Katie is better than most of the men out there. She’s a fantastic boxer and a credit to the country.

Of course women should be allowed box. I don’t see why anybody would be against it. It was great that she won and I’d say there will be plenty of young girls wanted to follow in her footsteps.

Barry was back to his best pool over the previous two weeks, he couldn’t see off the three stage reigning champion Mouse Kinsella, who reached his fourth final in a row. The second semi final, was a match up of two local players, Patrick McArdle and Peter O’Hagan of Bellurgan, which Patrick won 3-2 to make the decider. Dundalk IT Students’ Union has warned that Minister for Education & Skills Ruairi Quinn is creating a two-tiered education system with the introduction of a loan scheme which is being offered by Bank of Ireland with the backing of the government. This development is particularly worrying as the government scrapped financial assistance for postgraduate students late last year. Under the new scheme, the successful applicant would be given a loan for the full cost of a two year postgraduate programme. They will pay interest at a 10.8% variable rate. Repayments begin immediately and for the first 15 months the applicant makes payments on interest only. A key point to note in this

scheme is that the credit history of parents have no bearing on the success of the application, it is decided entirely on the credit history of the student. DKITSU know that hundreds of our students would fail to satisfy this requirement, as many of them have availed of overdraft facilities or are already struggling with loans to pay for their undergraduate degree, according to DKITSUPresident, David Branagan. “Last year, Minister Quinn made it difficult for thousands of postgraduate students to attain a postgraduate qualification when he removed the postgraduate maintenance grant, a move that Tom Boland, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Authority, stated, went against the national

skills policy. “Now, the Minister announces this scheme as if it were an adequate substitute for Government grants, but this is patently a scheme that will only help students who are already in a comfortable financial state”, he stated. “Any students with a poor credit history, those who are most in need of a maintenance grant, will be denied a loan and thus denied the opportunity to study at a postgraduate level due to financial barriers. “DKITSU calls on the Minister and the Labour Party to reassess the route they are taking postgraduate studies in Ireland, and to move away from a student loan system that has failed in so many other countries”, added Mr Branagan.
