A Dundalk couple are hoping to raise €45,000 to send their ten month old baby girl to America for life saving stem cell treatment in April of this year. Little Ellen Barron McGee has a rare life threatening condition called Mitochondrial Disorder which means that she probably won’t see 18 months if she doesn’t receive the stem cell treatment soon. Ellen is the daughter of Lisa McGee from Ashling Park in Dundalk and Tom Barron from Dublin. She also has a twin who does not suffer from this condition. Lisa and Tom lost their son Christian to the same condition ten years ago and with the help of friends they plan on organising numerous fundraising Above: Ellen Barron McGee needs urgent treatment to save her events to ensure Ellen is given a life; top right: Ellen’s mother Lisa with her twins.

The brain becomes impaired, muscles start to twitch spastically and weaken, the heart does not pump correctly, vision becomes impaired and the list can go on. Payments delayed due to post office dispute By Paul Byrne

Hundreds of outraged residents were left without social welfare payments on Monday morn-

ing as a dispute between An Post and postmaster of Castletown Post Office, Frank McArdle, escalated over the weekend. Mr McArdle who ran the Post Office as a contractor had originally told An Post that he intended to retire as postmaster of Castletown on Tuesday February 28 (yesterday). A new post office was due to open on Thursday March 1 on the Castletown Road in a building beside the Mace garage. However, in recent weeks Mr McArdle attempted to withdraw his resignation as postmaster and indicated that he wanted to carry on as before. An Post refused to accept this withdrawal and a dispute broke out between the two parties. This dispute resulted in Mr McArdle keeping the post office closed on Monday morning leaving scores of nearby residents unable to receive social welfare payments until Thursday. One local resident hit out at those involved with the dispute saying “It’s

nity service. He was also convicted of assaulting the woman involved by kicking her in the shin at Dundalk District Court on June 8th last year. This charge was taken into

account. The case was heard at Dundalk Court in December and adjourned to Wednesday last for a report to assess Williams suitability to do community service in

lieu of six months in jail. The harassment related to incidents at different locations in and about Dundalk on dates between April 16th and August 2 last year.

Student president urges respect during Rag Week DKIT student union president James Clarke has called for all students to have respect for their neighbours during this year’s college ‘Rag-Week’. Last year there were a number of incidents reported to Gardaí during Rag Week, including one where trees were sawn down by a young man at Rockfield Court in the early hours of the morning. There were also a number of arrests for drugs possession and public order breaches and around 15 people were issued with on-thespot fines for infringing bylaws on drinking in public. This year the student union have created closer links to community

Gardai and according to James Clarke the move will help to quell any anti-social behaviour. “This year we are putting a huge focus on anti-social behaviour and over the last few months we have been meeting up with Community Gardai at least once a month” explained James. “We have also been in contact with the various residents association around this area and we have been working with them to try to ensure there are no antibehaviour issues this year “In general the students are well behaved but we acknowledge that there are a small minority who don’t behave each year and this is

what we are trying to get rid off” he added. “In addition, after Rag Week is over, a number of our students will help in a clean-up operation around college estates that included filling bin bags and hiring a road sweeping machine. “The message we are aiming to get across to DkIT students is to have fun but make sure to respect your neighbours. Respect is the key here and hopefully we can all work together to ensure there are no issues with this year’s Rag Week”, he added. ‘Rag Week’ begins on Monday March 5 and runs for the entire week.

Group battles for the rights of self-employed By Eunan Whyte

A new group has been formed in Dundalk to highlight the challenges being faced by the selfemployed. Self Employed Alliance Dundalk (SEADK) is calling on both the self-employed and unemployed self-employed people to come together to share their experiences and fight for better recognition. One of the local businessmen involved in the organisation, Jock McArdle, explained the reasons behind its formation. “We want to achieve proper recognition at local and national level for the self-employed.

“The idea was borne out of frustration and one of the main issues is that if you lose your business you are entitled to nothing on the dole and if you are sick, you get nothing. “They only thing you are entitle to is a state pension and many people believe that is an unfair way to treat people who have worked all their lives and contributed to the economy. “We hear examples all the time like a man who employed 14 electricians but when the business failed, he was the only one not entitled to any social welfare”, added Jock. SEADK meet every Monday

night in The Chestnut, Long Walk, at 6.30pm with meetings lasting only 30 minutes. “I would encourage people to come along to let us know the issues that are affecting them. We had 13 at the first meeting and we hope that all those people will bring two more to the next one. “This is a non-political organisation and while there is nothing else like it in the country, there is interest in expanding the group nationwide in the future, so we can eventually form a strong lobby group”, he added. Those interested in finding out more can contact Jock McArdle on 086 3954830.

Youth bought car in moment of madness An 18-year-old youth who bought a car in a “moment of madness” for €300 was involved in an accident and panicked and ran off. Alex Dunne of 16, Slieve Foy Park admitted charges at Dundalk Court relating to the accident on October 25 last at Hoey’s Lane, and a separate public order incident. He was fined €800 in respect of not being insured and banned from driving for three years arising out of the accident, and the other charges along with the public order matter were taken into account by Judge William Hamill. Inspector John Foudy

recalled that Gardai on patrol at 11.30pm on the date received a report of three youths exiting a car in a suspicious manner at the Dublin Road Enquiries revealed that Dunne was the owner. The defendant said he bought the car the previous day but couldn’t provide evidence. It was discovered he was involved in a hit and run accident. After initial suspicions the investigating Garda satisfied himself the car wasn’t stolen. The defendant failed to produce insurance or a driving licence and there was also no tax on the vehicle. He said the accident occurred when he hit a

puddle and lost control of his vehicle and struck another vehicle and panicked. He had a previous clear record. The Inspector said that public order incident took place on July 29 last. Gardai attended Muirhevnamor following a report of a family row. The defendant was having an altercation with his step father, and was threatening and abusive to him and the Gardai. He refused to desist from his behaviour. Solicitor Sean T. O’Reilly said that the defendant moved to Dundalk to live from Dublin and didn’t settle.

Two local men convicted at Dublin Special Criminal Court Two local men were convicted at Dublin’s Special Criminal Court of having a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device in 2010. Conan Murphy (25), of address at Plaster, Mountpleasant, Dundalk was found guilty of the possession of explosive substances at Aghaboys, Mountpleasant on May 22, 2010. Philip McKevitt (58) of Aghaboys, Mountpleasant, was also found guilty of the same of-

fence at his home on the same date. The trial began in November and the court heard that gardaí had placed the address under surveillance as part of an operation focusing on the suspected movement and manufacture of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices by members of the IRA. Gardaí told the court that they raided Philip McKevitt’s home and discovered an “adaptive”

trailer constructed for the purposes of concealing two gas containers which had been modified to cause an explosion. Convicting the two men today, Mr Justice Paul Butler said that the court was “satisified beyond doubt” that they were aware of the materials found in the shed and therefore both men were guilty as charged. Rachel Watters and Sarah Cairns with their 3rd birthday cards

Girls turn 12 on third birthday By Eunan Whyte

Two local school girls will celebrate a big occasion today when they turn 12 on what is only their third birthday. Rachel Watters, from Mountainview and Sarah Cairns, from the Racecourse Road, have had to wait four years to celebrate their official birthday, having both been born on Leap Day in 2002. Today is only the girls’ third official birthday so the Sixth

Class pupils in Scoil Mhuire na nGael, Bay Estate are determined to squeeze four years worth of festivities in one day. They mark the big occasion on what will be their final birthday in primary school, their classmates surprised them with cards, banners and balloons. The girls admit that sometimes they are unsure if they are really three or 12, but are delighted to be able to have their party on February 29 for a change. School principal, Martina

Rafferty, advised the girls that they will probably be happy enough to use their full age until they reach 21, and after that they might be anxious to take a few years off when it suits. Sarah is a pupil in Mr Foran’s Sixth Class and Rachel is in Mrs Sloane’s class. The girls were also the last Leap Day children to be born in the Louth Hospital after the maternity unit was closed the following year.

In 2011 DkIT was recognised as a Fairtade College and this year they will again be marking Fairtrade Fortnight which runs from February 27 to March 11. During the Fortnight the Canteens will have displays of Fairtrade products and a Fairtrade producer will be on campus. Being recognised as a Fairtrade College means that catering outlets provide Fairtrade tea, coffee and at least two Fairtrade products. In order to gain this recognition Aramark Catering (Canteens), the Student Common Room and the Hospitality Dept all supported Fairtrade. The College has also passed a Fairtrade Purchasing policy. Fairtrade aims to address income inequality and ensure fair prices for producers of a wide range of products including tea, coffee, chocolate, sugar and cotton. By providing fair prices the organization helps communities to invest in the social, economic and environmental development of their communities. Annually Fairtrade agree a fair price for products with producers and guarantee that this price will be paid, when we buy a Fairtrade product we can be sure that agreed price will go to the producer. An international survey in 2011 survey indicated that 59% of consumers believe they can make a difference in buying a Fairtrade product.. Irish, French, and South African shoppers felt the most empowered among all consumers, with around 70 percent believing that their shopping choices make a difference. The Irish also have the highest expectations of companies, as 89 percent emphasize the role of business in reducing poverty. Sigfredo Benitez of the Cooperative Los Pintos will talk about the impact of Fairtrade on his community on 6th March, 1 pm in the Board Room, T K Whitaker Building.

Cuts in Community Employment Schemes By Niamh Kirk

County Louth is to see cuts of over half a million euro to Community Employment schemes, prompting Opposition TD Gerry Adams to vow to exmine the effects that cuts are having on the community in Louth by looking at cuts to the CE scheme. Twenty-five of the county’s 29 community employment

projects are to finish this year. The schemes currently have 743 participants and 44 supervisors. Mid Louth Community Employment which has 54 participants and three supervisors, and Redeemer Development Group which has 39 participants and 4 supervisors, are major undertakings making an invaluable contribution to the local economy

and community. Deputy Adams stated “Next Saturday will be one year from last year’s general election. Since Fine Gael and Labour came to power there has been a consistent increase in the number of citizens on the live register in county Louth. In January this figure reached 17,775.” Sinn Fein have criticised the cuts stating that “the Govern-

ment’s approach creates an enormous level of uncertainty and fear and undermines the role of CE schemes in local communities. At the same time as the Minister cuts half a million euro from CE budgets in Louth the government will next month pay €3.1 billion in a promissory note to Anglo-Irish bank.”

Conor Tuite (20) 226 Glenwood Dublin Road admitted an amended charge for possession of 48 ecstasy tablets valued at €240. The case was put back to April 18, with the local court told that the defendant had a difficulty in the past which he was seeking to overcome. His solicitor James McGuill also said the defendant was due to sit his Leaving Certificate this summer. There was a matter before the Circuit Court on April 17 and a report had been sought from the probation service. The offence took place at Glenwood on May 19 2010. Mr McGuill said there was a small amount of cannabis found in a follow up search but there was no evidence that the tablets were for sale.

Dancing is in Mona’s blood The Mona Roddy Irish Dance School has been producing world champions for over 40 years and has firmly put Dundalk on the map as a hotbed of dancing talent. Mona who started up the dance school in 1970 says it was a natural step to start a dance school and pass on all the wonderful advice she has been given over the years. “I was very fortunate that my mother sent me to a brilliant teacher here in Dundalk when I was child.” says Mona. “Her name was Mrs Matthews and I have to say she was a wonderful teacher and

VEC submits school applications County Louth VEC has confirmed that it submitted two applications to the Department of Education and Skills by the deadline of last week to become patron of the two new post-primary schools earmarked for Co. Louth. The Department of Education and Skills

plans to establish two new 1,000 place post-primary schools in the county by September 2014, one in Dundalk and one in Drogheda. Dr. Pádraig Kirk, CEO of the VEC, described the applications as being ‘very strong’ and said that he was looking forward to a ‘posi-

tive outcome for the VEC’. The new post-primary school in Drogheda will be constructed at a site on the Ballymakenny Road, on the same site as the new Scoil Oilibheir Naofa Primary School. A site for the new Dundalk school has yet to be finalised.

Down Syndrome benefit night The second annual Down Syndrome Ireland Benefit night was held at Dundalk Stadium on Saturday night along with 9 other greyhound tracks around Ireland. The family fun night was a great success with plenty of children taking the opportunity to enjoy the indoor activity area set up especially for the event. Goody bags were handed out to all children in at-

tendance which were accepted with great delight! Irish dancers entertained the crowd in between the greyhound races and there were lots of raffle prizes up for grabs! Clare Leonard the President of Down Syndrome Ireland was delighted with the event and enjoyed the evening immensely with her son Richard. John Brophy Louth Meath Branch Treasurer and

Brendan Stephenson Louth Meath Branch Secretary were kept busy all night organizing the raffle and other activities but were very pleased with the funds raised on the night and through the ticket sales. Dundalk Stadium looks forward to many more nights like it in the future and hope that the events continues to be an annual event.

Mick Flannery in concert The Spirit Store is presenting Mick Flannery for a special concert in The Crowne Plaza, Dundalk on Saturday April 28. Tickets are on sale now from The Spirit Store at 9352697 or Crowne Plaza, Dundalk 9394900. Cork songsmith Mick Flannery’s debut album Evening Train featured tracks which had won

him two awards in the Nashville International Song Writing Competition, judged by his idol Tom Waits. He was the first Irish musician to win in this event. White Lies, his second release in 2008, achieved a top ten position in the Irish Albums Chart. It later went platinum and was nominated for the Choice Music

Prize. The Irish Times placed him in “The 50 Best Irish Acts Right Now” published in 2009, later that year he also won Best Irish Male at the Meteor Awards. Don’t miss out on this artist, he is one of the best live acts you could hope to see and his raw, powerful voice is not easily matched.

Pictured are the McGuill Travel Party who were major supporters of the night, selling tickets from their outlet in Market Square Dundalk and putting up many of the raffle prizes on the night. Back l-r: Jennifer Harrison, Teresa, Emma, Ciaran and Stephen Campbell; front l-r: Kellie, Shauna McGuill with Ashlie McGuill and Lorraine McCormack.

NEW VOLVO V40

Volvo will reveal the all-new Volvo V40 next month at the Geneva Motor Show. This is an important car to Volvo they hope to sell 90,000 of the compact V40’s in the first year, with 85% of these cars being sold in Europe. According to Volvo this is the first new model that is fully developed according to our human-centric, Designed Around You strategy. Charged with an outstanding set of high-tech features it

definitely will give our toughest competitors a headache,” says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation. The engine range spans everything from Volvo Car Corporation’s first diesel with CO2 emissions of just 94 g/km to the turbocharged T5 petrol engine with 254 hp and acceleration from 0 to 100 kph in 6.7 seconds. All engine versions feature start-stop and braking energy regeneration, no mat-

ter whether they are fitted with a manual or automatic gearbox. The all-new Volvo V40 will feature a safety and driver support package, including Volvo’s Pedestrian Detection system with Full Auto Brake and several other new features. Among the new features are a world-first pedestrian airbag, Lane Keeping Aid with auto steering, and an automatic Park Assist Pilot that makes parallel parking easy.

The City Safety low-speed collision avoidance system has been further developed and it now operates at speeds up to 50 kph (currently 31kph on other models). “The all-new V40 is the most intelligent and safe Volvo model so far. All its features are designed around the drive stay alert and well informed to avoid collisions and dangerous situations,” says Håkan Abrahamsson, Vehicle Line Director C Cars & V40 Vehicle Programme Manager. He adds: “With this class-leading safety package, including enhanced focus on pedestrian protection, the all-new V40 aims for a full star rating in the new, sharpened 2012 Euro NCAP safety tests.”

The new Mazda CX-5 will be fitted as standard with ‘Smart City Brake Support’ (SCBS), which helps a driver to avoid a frontal collision when driving at low speeds in the city or in slow moving traffic. W h e n driving at speeds between 4 and 31kph, the SCBS system uses a laser to sense a vehicle or obstruction in front of the Mazda CX-5 and if the driver fails to take action, the SCBS automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time.
