THE discovery of a drug den in an unused shed in the middle of a residential area has led to concerns among local residents at the scale of the problem. The issue came to light after two local men discovered a drug den in a shed in a premises along the Castletown Road. Over the past few weeks Matthew English and David Taaffe had noticed an increase in activity around the dilapidated premises once known as Rice’s Shop, in particular with respect to land adjacent to it. The two men had noticed people entering and exiting the location and suspected that the area was being used to take drugs. “We have seen people going in and out of the
shed and during the day you can hear the people in there. The people coming out of there, some of them are simply off their heads,” said Matthew. “We wanted to go in and find out how this can be going on,” he explained. Waiting until they were sure that the building was not in use, the two men along with a local councillor inspected the shed located on the land behind the once popular shop. What they found there was a carpet of burnt tin foil shreds, used syringes, medical bottles and prescription tablet packets. They estimate they could see 200 individual pieces of burnt tin foil which they believe indicates the number of ‘hits’ Continued on page 2
