Amy clinches European boxing title By Paul Byrne

Dundalk’s hugely talented boxer Amy Broadhurst added the European title to the EU championship she won last year with a magnificent performance in Hungary last weekend. The 16-year-old who is a member of Dealgan Boxing Club in Dundalk claimed gold in the 57kg category thanks to a comprehensive victory over France’s Elisa Bouchlaka in the final. The Dundalk southpaw got the nod from all three judges across the board much to the delight of her family and supporters who had made the journey to Hungary to support the talented boxer. The talented young boxer arrived home on Sunday night to be greeted by family and friends at her house in Amy Broadhurst celebrates her victory in Hungary

Louth’s footballers take on Kildare in a crucial football qualifier this Saturday where they hope to continue their journey on the road to All-Ireland glory. Unprovoked assault following a night out with his friends A young man who was the victim of an unprovoked attack was knocked unconscious as he went to assist a friend on the way home from a nightclub. Andrew McGee of Grange, Carlingford, remembers waking up in hospital hours after the incident which left him with bleeding on the brain. He also had a fit later that day and continues to suffer from headaches and dizziness following the assault on Friday April 13, 2012. A friend of Mr McGee, Shane Finnegan, was also the victim of a minor assault on the night and as a result two men were convicted of assault. Kurt Murphy of Lower Faughart, Dundalk, and another individual, who was a juvenile at the time, denied the charges and claimed that they were not present on the occasion. They disputed prose-

cution claims that it was they who were captured on CCTV cameras in and around the scene. Solictor for Kurt Murphy, Conor McGuill, argued that the case against his client should be dismissed as there was no identification that could properly satisfy a court. “There must be some doubt that the people on CCTV and in court are one and the same”, he stated. Meanwhile, Frank McDonnell, acting for the second defendant, also stated that there has to be a doubt as his client gave evidence to say he wasn’t there on the night, while an independent witness stated that he did not see any physical contact between the assailant and the victim. Inspector Kevin Daly, argued that there was sufficient evidence given to place the two men at the scene, and to identify them as the assailants. Judge Patrick Clyne

stated that the evidence of Garda Graham Doolan told the court that he saw the two defendants running from the scene as he responded to a call. This image was captured on CCTV and shown in court. Witness, Carly McGrath, indicated to him that the two men were present on the night. As result of this conclusion, he had to decide if they carried out the assault. “In the evidence of Shane Finnegan and Carly McGrath, they were very clear about who both parties were. In the circumstances I accept the evidence of Shane Finnegan and Carly McGrath given in identification and I convict”, stated the judge. Theatre group looking for young performers UPSTATE Theatre Project is looking for young people aged 16 to 25 from across Louth to take part in a new programme, establishing the Upstate Youth Ensemble and preparing a public performance for the end of the summer. The project will use physical theatre techniques requiring high levels of commitment and fitness, concentration and imagination. Combining this physicality with poignant text devised by the young people taking part, Upstate hopes to forge an exciting new form of performance that is innovative and energising. Anyone with an interest in contemporary music, dance and physical the-

Even those unsure about committing for the full programme can still take part in the introductory workshop, which will take place on Thursday July 18 in the Town Hall from 2 to 4pm. In adjourning the case to October 23, Judge Clyne ordered Kurt Murphy to pay €5,000 compensation to Mr McGee and the second defendant to pay €1,250 for the assault on Mr Finnegan.

Natasha takes top pageant honours

Grafton St Dublin where all the Team along with last year’s European Princess of Ireland winner team Captain Abigail Little, they had a fantastic photo shoot where shoppers tourist and shopkeeper were treated to the tiara-clad girls charm poise and good humour. Natasha, who took everything in her stride, is now looking forward to travelling to Malta to compete against not only her own Team but up to 90 girls from all over Europe for a week long Pageant leading to the grand finale on the final night.

When 17-year-old Dundalk girl Natasha McDonagh entered a pageant in Dublin she had no idea where it would lead her to. With her stunning features Natasha blew the judges away with style and grace on the catwalk. Gaining the coveted title at her first pageant Miss Grace 2013. Natasha was asked to join an elite troup of girls heading for Malta later in the year to represent Ireland. Natasha has been to events with her team to open ceremonies, fundraising and photo shoots. Jim Corr makes settlement with bank JIM Corr has made an 11th hour settlement of his €1.4 million debt dispute with ACC Bank. The terms of the deal were not revealed in the Commercial Court where he was due to appear last week. The case centred around an unpaid loan for a 94 acre property in Kilkenny which was one of a number of prop-

erty investments arising from a business partnership. ACC got a judgement against the musician for €1.4m. They accused Mr Corr of trying to out his assets put of the banks reach when he sold off a Dublin apartment for €350,000 not long after the judegement was made.

Mr Corr was questioned about his financial affairs resulting from his former businsses partnership. At a court appearance in May Mr Corr answered questions regarding money he had in 2006 when it was claimed he had €4m sitting in different back accounts. He was due to be ques-

tioned in court last week but settled hours before he was due to take the stand. During the proceedings Mr Corr described his financial affairs as being in dire straits and in freefall and that the sale of the property, which was mortgage free, was part of an attempt to sell everything on his property portfolio which

he had built up. Just before cross examination of the guitarist with the popular musicians was due to begin, counsel for ACC requested a delay during which time the parties settled. The father of one said that he was revealed that it was over and looked forward to returning making music.

Loophole closed for drivers trying to avoid motor tax By Paul Byrne

A LOOPHOLE which saw motorists with untaxed cars submitting a nonuse declaration form at a Garda station has been closed this week. Previously all the motorist required was a signature of the declaration by a garda, but no other documentary evidence was required to remove the liability to pay motor tax. The system was open to abuse as it left the possibility of motorists continuing to drive after their tax had expired and afterwards explaining the gap in their cover by telling the Garda that their car had been off the road for the three months in which tax hadn’t been paid. The change in the law will require anyone intending to take their car

off the road to make a submission in advance to the motor tax office, and not Gardaí, and to pay any arrears plus a minimum of three months’ tax. While in some cases declarations were genuine, it is suspected that there is widespread abuse, potentially costing up to €55m per annum. New arrangements will apply to declaring a vehicle off the road for motor tax purposes from July 1 2013. The new system requires a vehicle to be declared off the road in advance, and will replace the system whereby owners declare a vehicle off the road retrospectively when seeking to tax a vehicle. There is no change in the rules for those who pay their motor tax by its expiry date, or those who

end up paying arrears after their tax has expired. There is a three month transition period from July 1 to September 30 during which those in arrears must pay the arrears and either take out a new vehicle licence or make a declaration of non-use, that is, inform the motor tax authorities of their intention not to use the vehicle in a public place. Those whose vehicles have not been on the road must make a declaration of non-use for the period in question and either take out a new vehicle licence or make a declaration of non-use, that is, inform the motor tax authorities of their intention not to use the vehicle in a public place. Following the end of the transition period, the current system will cease to operate.

Youth tackle cyber bullying YOUTH Council members from Louth joined their counterparts from Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh and Newry to take part in a unique cross border conference to explore the issue of Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety. First on the agenda for the 55 participants were workshops on Cyber bullying where the young people got to identify what exactly is Cyber Bullying and learned what to do if they

think they are being cyber bullied online, through social media or by text. The group then created T-shirts with their favorite internet safety slogan. This meant that the young people took the message of the training home with them and shared these messages with other young people and their families. By examining this topic on a cross border basis the young people gained an insight into how differ-

ently this topic is being addressed in both north and south of the border. The event was held in Derrynoose, Co. Armagh as part of the Cross Border Youth Council Networking Project. A leading disability and employment group has launched a new project to engage with employers across Louth and support jobseekers with disabilities into jobs. Open Door is an initiative by the Irish Association of Supported Employment (IASE). It aims to support at least 100 people with disabilities into jobs in the open labour market and engage with some 1,500 employers across the Border, Midlands, West (BMW) region over the next two years. Open Door will see a series of employer focussed events taking place across the county over the coming 24 months. By Niamh Kirk Tourists who have visited Dundalk and some other destinations on “Dublin’s Doorstep” have had their say about their experiences. Failte Ireland this week released the results of the Holidaymaker Study 2012 which is its most comprehensive study into what holidaymakers think of Ireland and its regional destinations. More than 10,000 visitors both domestic and foreign to Dublin’s Doorstep areas including Dundalk and Co Louth were asked about their holiday. They gave in-depth insights into their experiences and recommendations. The results show that Co Louth has a huge potential to meet these demands and become a top tourist destination. Hiking/walking is the most popular activity for visitors, who also explained that the biggest pull away from urban centres was to spend time in mountains or along the coast. They also stated that golf, farm visits and other activities such as cycling and fishing attracted them to the area. Co Louth offers all of the main attributes visitors look for; its natural features like the Cooley Mountains and coastal hotspots mean that the main tourism needs and wants can be easily met. Hiking and mountain biking takes place in Ravensdale; fishing in Greenore Beach, boat trips in Carlingford, equestrian pursuits are

common across the county as are water activates. The scenery, and history and culture of a region are also a huge pull with 39% saying that is was took them to the area in the first place; Newgrange and the Boyne Valley were

big attractions. Speaking about Co Louth’s tourist potential going forward, Gary Breen, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of Operations said that to attract more visitors, further insight is needed into “what they think, what they like and what they want.

Tourism is in a good place compared to five years ago but we can’t become complacent,” he said. The aim was to see the regional tourist hot spots be able to tailor their product to meet the needs and expectations of visitors.

‘Embrace your identity’ with the Dundalk Pride By Niamh Kirk

The Dundalk Pride festival is taking place from July 16 to 23, complete with a new theme, ‘Embrace Your Identity’. Now in its fourth year, the festival was created to provide a regional version of the Pride events that take place among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities worldwide. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Embrace Your Identity’. Committee member Kirsty Park explains, “We chose this theme because Pride is not just a gay thing – it’s a community thing. You

can embrace your identity as a family member, friend or business by joining in the celebration and showing your support.” The festival kicks off on Tuesday July 16 with the “Identify” Art Exhibition Launch from 6pm at the Dundalk County Museum, to be launched by Senator Mary Moran. Running throughout the festival, the exhibition is free to view and features submissions received from across the country after a nationwide call for entries. A Table Quiz takes place on Thursday July 18, from 9pm at McGeough’s Bar, Roden Place, while the

Fall in local bee numbers is not yet at crisis point two successive years of particularly wet weather conditions explained Mr Shaw who keeps bees in Ard Easmuinn, Dundalk. Each Year a Queen Bee takes about three flights into the ‘drone zone’ which is about 20-25 meters up in order to mate enough to produce plenty of eggs. But during wet weather, she and ‘the drone bees’ cannot fly for as long or as much as necessary to fill a hive. Fine dry weather is needed for them to thrive. But last year they didn’t mate properly, didn’t produce enough eggs and the life cycle in hives died. This was exacerbated by this year’s delayed spring, meaning that there was little pollen to feed off when they began to emerge, usually in March and many starved to death. “There was no food and they didn’t go into increase and multiply

We have great members and we are trying to help each other by breeding Queens,” said Tom. The ongoing problem is pesticides that kill off the bees, and can cause them to infect others. But an EU ban on the most harmful pesticides comes into effect this December and may help with the population increase next summer. The Irish Government does not support the ban according to Mr Shaw. However nature has a way of correcting itself if allowed, he added and points out that bees have been around tens of thousands of years, exactly as they are, and have survived worse weather than this.

The beekeepers of County Louth have suffered a free fall in the populations of their hives this year as a combination of bad weather and pesticides has caused them to fall by as much as 80%. There are more than 200 beekeepers in County Louth, each with a varying amount of hives, from one or two in urban gardens while others keep as many as one hundred hives. It is a vibrant community of people who care for these vital insects, but the population of bees has fallen by at least 50% in some areas and as much as 80% in others. Tom Shaw, secretary of the Beekeepers Association explained what is happening to the local bees and explains that we shouldn’t be counting down to catastrophe just yet. A self-employed electrician was disqualified from driving for two years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court. Jonathan Murphy of Ballagan, Greenore, was breathalysed on June 15 this year at Lower Rath, Carlingford and the reading showed he was over the legal limit for driving. Judge Patrick Clyne also imposed a €250 and agreed to postpone the disqualification until January 1, 2014.

KILDARE is preparing itself for a Wee County invasion over the next few days as both the Louth footballers and the St Brigids Way pilgrims make their way to the ‘Short Grass County’. Louth’s footballers take on Kildare in a crucial football qualifier this Saturday where they hope to continue their journey on the road to All-Ireland glory. Louth will be just a game away from the All-Ireland quarter finals if they can

Supporters of Louth GAA will hope that the football teams journey can continue beyond that date.

As the Government prepares to push for an abolition of the upper house, and announces it is soon to set the date for the fourth referendum of their term, local Senator Mary Moran has expressed her hopes that the Seanad will continue. Mrs Moran joined the ranks of the 24th Seanad in 2011 on nomination from Enda Kenny. Since then she says that she has really learnt about the value and power that the Seanad has. “If you abolish the Seanad, you leave all the power in one house, the Dáil,” she said. The Seanad has a role she explained, it is the forum where bills and legislation can be scrutinised and debated more robustly than in the Dáil. “You have a better opportunity to raise issues. We can call on ministers to take action, we can scrutinise bills before the pass,” she said. Indeed thisweek the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill is yet to be debated, and at the moment there is a 50/50 split. If rejected by the Seanad, it will have to go back for amendment. It is only since becoming a senator herself that she has fully appreciated the work that goes on while the spotlight shines mostly on the Dáil. She said that she was disappointed with Enda Kenny’s speech last week on the issue, and contested the claims made that the Seanad had done so little in its 75 years. Mrs Moran pointed to more than 50 amendments to Bills that have been accepted before passing into legislation and much more. She believes that the Seanad is in need of reform, and that it is this reformed Seanad, with more powers and more say in legislation that the people should vote on. “I would like to see a reformed Seanad put in place before the referendum”, she said.

Andrius Kisielius, 40 Beauparc, The Loakers, Blackrock, was banned from driving for four years and fine €200 after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to provide a breath specimen. The 21-year-old Lithuanian man was arrested on August 5 last year on Tom Bellew Ave after Gardai saw him turning without indicating. He was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where on four occasions he failed to provide a breath specimen. For driving without insurance he was disqualified for two years and fine €100, and fined €100 for having no licence.

Don’t encourge others to take drugs A Dundalk man was given a stern warning not to encourage others to abuse drugs by Judge Patrick Clyne when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Judge Clyne made his comments to Stephen Ryan of 14 Mourne Vale, Dundalk, as he gave him the opportunity to serve 200 hours Community Service in lieu of five months in prison. “I don’t give a damn what you take yourself but I care about what you encourage others to do. You

The court heard that on October 23 last year the defendant was seen acting suspiciously at Drive 2, Muirhevnamor, and ran off when he saw Gardai. He dropped a bag containing €292 worth of cannabis and €5,034 worth of ecstasy, which he later admitted owning. As a result he faced two charg-

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his 23-year-old client had been an abuser of drugs at the time and asked for the judge to consider Community Service for his client who had no previous convictions. Judge Clyne adjourned the case to September 4 for a Community Service Report and suggested 200 hours in lieu of five months in prison.

Calls for economic support in border area By Niamh Kirk TDs and senators from across the border region are calling for improved investment and support from the Irish Government. The move comes following the recent announcement the North is to retain tax assisted status, which means extra tax incentives to the area for infrastructure and foreign direct investment. The UK Government also announced an investment initiative in the South East of Northern Ireland, the Newry and Mourne area in a bid to attract further investment to the area. Some major firms like Vodafone have already been attracted to the North as they relocated their call centre from Dundalk to Teleperformance in Newry, resulting in the loss of more than 300 jobs last year. A team of TDs and Senators from Louth, along with colleagues from other Border counties, met with Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Finance Michael Noonan last week. Senator Jim D’Arcy representing County Louth said that the group got a fair hearing and will have the opportunity to meet again before October’s budget. The group will now put to-

Dundalk has not fared well in a number of recent reports which have underlined the need for sustained improvement in the area. The McArdle report in 2011 focused on the Newry Mourne Economic Zone. It highlighted the levels of deprivation in Dundalk, which was found to be the most deprived part of the border region. While the establishment of Prometric and PayPal improved the situation, there is still considerable shortages of employment in the area. The most recent figures from the Central Statistics Office show that unemployment

is high with Dundalk at 24.19% and a new firm formation figures are, 5.79 new firms for every 1000 employees. The national average for gateway town like Dundalk is 7.29 firms. The McArdle Report recommended the establishment of a focused economic zone encompassing Dundalk and Newry, but this was rejected by Enda Kenny who favours a targeted stimulus plan. “We need a concerted effort to show the border region needs and we need a body of work to support that. There was a stage that there was a scheme for every lamppost in the country. But they don’t work by themselves. We need more than one string in our bow and there is more than one way to get where we need to go,” said Paddy Malone PRO of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce. Dundalk Chamber of Commerce have been calling on successive governments to recognize the unique problems of this region and welcomed the request for submissions in advance of the meeting which will specifically address border issues.

NEW CITROEN GRAND C4

Citroen have unveiled the new Grand C4 Picasso sevenseater MPV which is set to go on sale January 2014. It is lighter and leaner than its predecessor with weight saving of 110kg, lower C02 emissions which are as low as 98 g/km depending on the engine with the promise of improved fuel consumption. It has a footprint of 4.59m x 1.83 m x 1.63 m, which is the same length as the predecessor but has a longer wheelbase, which has improved the interior space. There is an extra 69-litres of cargo space 645-litres VDA & over 700-litres with row two seats in their forward position. All models will be fitted with stop/start technology to aid fuel consumption – there is will be a eco focused version fitted with a e-HDi 90 Airdream engine, with the ETG6 gearbox which, which emits 98 g/km with a combined fuel consumption of 3.8L/100km(74.3mpg). The six-speed clutchless ETG6 gearbox offers both a manual and an automated mode, and is also available on both the e-HDi 90 and e-HDi 115 versions. The eHDi 115 ETG6 emits 104g/km of CO2 emissions (105g/km for the manual version) with an official combined fuel economy of 4L/100km(70.6mpg). The new Euro 6 compliant BlueHDi engine fitted with Citroën’s innovative Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. The BlueHDi 150 manual unit will emit just 110g/km of CO2

emissions (117g/km for the 6-speed automatic gearbox version). Safety equipment includes radar guided active cruise control, anti-collision warning system and ultrasonic blind spot monitoring amongst other technology. The new Grand C4 Picasso will see both a 7” touchpad and a 12” panoramic HD screen – the touchpad will control all the incar functions such as dual-zone air conditioning, navigation, audio, telephone and driving aids. Where the 12” screen will be used to display the navigation system or other driving aids, such as the active cruise control. There will be a number of ‘Apps’ which will intergrates with the car’s systems to display information such fuel consumption, plan journeys or find available car parking spaces, etc. Park Assist will automatically offer assistance when manoeuvring into a tight parking space, whether parallel parking or reversing straight back, all you have to do is manage the acceleration and braking. Plus 360 vision will show a bird’s eye view around the car to aid parking or when hooking up a trailer. There have yet to be confirmed by Citroen, as soon as we know we will publish them, along with the specifications nearer the launch date. Some of the above features maybe options or not available on certain models.

How about this little beauty in this weather? There are three variants of Jaguar's beautiful new sportscar, FTYPE, F-TYPE S and F-TYPE V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine with all engines featuring stop/ start technology. The V6 F-TYPE is powered by a new 340PS 3.0-litre V6 engine which is capable of 0-100kph(62mph) in 5.3 seconds with a top speed of 259(161mph). The all important CO2 emissions have been recorded as 209 g/km. The V6 F-TYPE S has a 380 PS version of the same 3.0-litre V6 engine, but is slightly quicker at 4.9 seconds to 100kph and a top speed of 275kph(171mph) (which is electronically restricted) - CO2 emissions are 213 g/km. All the F-TYPEs are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with a set of eight closely-spaced, sporting ratios in its QuickShift transmission, giving greater driver control.
