Dundalk retailers and community leaders are galvanising and aiming to inject a renewed sense of vitality into the retail sector in the town centre. Just like every town in Ireland Dundalk has suffered a catastrophic slump in retail, with the result that many businesses are operating on survival mode, barely able to keep their premises open. The Dundalk Development plan 2009-2015 notes that, “The viability and vitality of any town centre is a barometer of the overall health and well being of the entire town.” and as a result, interested groups are coming together to reinvigorate the town retail sector. Having witnessed at first
hand the challenges that have been presented in recent years, the retailers, Tidy Towns committees, businesses and social leaders are coming together to turn it around. “The past five months have seen the worst trading for Dundalk Town Centre Retail since the financial crisis started. This has reached crisis levels and is forcing many businesses to let staff go or even close down completely,” explained Edward Boyd of the Clanbrassil Street Centre. “The problems are many fold, but most importantly there has been a severe drop in customer footfall and customer spending. This must be reversed,” he added. Continued on page 4

hearing. The appointment as chair is a bittersweet one for Cllr O’Boyle as he knows that this will more than likely be the last year the Town Council will function. “It’ll be a sad day when the Town Council here in Dundalk ceases to exist” lamented O’Boyle. “Local town councillors contribute hugely to various organisations around the town and do an awful lot to ensure problems get solved at a local level.” he explained. Cllr O’Boyle succeeded Sinn Fein’s Jennifer Green who made history last year when she became her party’s first female chair for the Town Council.

Gerry puts manners on young President Higgins Dundalk Leader 26th June 2013
By Paul Byrne
THERE’S not too many people in Ireland who can claim to have smacked the President, but that’s exactly what Muirhevnamor resident Gerry Ronan did over 60 years ago in his hometown of Ballycarr, Co Clare. Gerry, who first moved to Dundalk in the 70s, put manners on a young Michael D Higgins after the current president knocked over some hay bales which had been stacked for drying in the Ronan family’s field at the back of their house. As Gerry explains the President was a regular visitor to his home on the Old Road in Ballycarr. “Michael and his brother John were sent to stay with his aunt and uncle in Newmarket-onFergus in Clare when
they were youngsters and they would often come up to our home on the Old Road to play hurling, football or just mess about on the farm. “I can remember one day in particular when he was messing about in the field with his brother and he knocked down the bales which we had spent all morning stacking up. I went over to him and slapped him on the backside and told him not to do it again” laughed Gerry. “He was probably about eight or nine at the time and I would have been maybe 16 or 17.” he recalls. President Higgins obviously harboured no grudge for that slap on the backside as he bumped into Gerry four years ago outside the Dáil spending about ten minutes with him reminiscing about the good old days on the

Old Road. “I decided to do a tour of the Dáil with my daughter Catherine and her husband Ollie a few years back and just when we were leaving we bumped into Michael D and we spent a few minutes chatting about old times. “He knew me straight
away and we laughed about the slap on the backside. Gerry who remembers Michael D as a very clever young man walked the President to school on his very first day in Ballycarr NS back in the 1940s in rural Clare. Late last year President Higgins found out
that Gerry had been feeling unwell and wrote his old pal a letter in which he wrote “Dear Gerry, I have the warmest memories of the large Ronan family and I send my warmest wishes to you all. You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers as we approach the season of Christmas.’
In response, Dundalk BIDS is hosting an important meeting on July 2 to come together and create vision of Dundalk town centre that each committee can work towards. Retailers have been working with Dundalk BIDS over the past few months to put together a positive plan of action and the leaders are looking for new ideas and fresh faces that can help improve the situation. The meeting will be chaired by Bobby Kerr owner of Insomnia Coffee chain and one of the ‘Dragons’ from RTE’s Dragon’s Den. A number of other speakers will also be giving brief talks on the four main topics of ‘Infrastructure and Environment’, ‘Marketing and Customer Service’, ‘Events and Festivals’ and ‘Safety and Security’. “We need to find ways to bring shoppers back to the Town Centre. The meeting on July 2 is for Dundalk retailers to work together to win back their customers. This is an opportunity for businesses to work with the Town Centre Commerical Manager and council to address critical issues such as parking, security and events. I would urge all Retailers to attend and help bring shoppers back to the Town Centre,” said Mr Boyd. The meeting for everyone in the Dundalk Business Community takes place in the AV Theatre Dundalk Museum Jocelyn Street Dundalk on July 2 at 6.30pm.

Man was mixing with the ‘wrong crowd’ A man who claimed he was mixing with the wrong crowd was warned that he risks going to jail if he finds himself before the court again. The warning was given to Enda Cox with an address at Curry, Athlone Road, Longford, after he was banned from driving for three years and fined €500 after being convicted of dangerous driving. The court was told that on August 8, 2012, Gardai on patrol noticed a car being driven erratically at Rampart Lane. When they approached, the driver pulled back and then drove forward, colliding with the patrol car and causing
€500 worth of damage. The car drove off and as Gardai followed, a passenger threw a glass bottle at the patrol car. Following enquiries, Gardai met with the defendant who admitted driving at the time. On August 11 an unmarked patrol car was tipped from behind by a van in the town centre causing minor damage. The van then drove off towards the border and Mr Cox later admitted being a passenger. Solicitor, James MacGuill, stated that at the time the 22-year-old apprentice welder’s life was in a state of chaos. “He was associating with the
wrong people and drinking to excess. He was insured which illustrates that he was not mindless in respect of his obligations”, explained the solicitor. He added that his client is obtaining psychotherapy and is anxious to address the issue of compensation. Taking other charges into consideration, Judge Michael Coghlan imposed a fine and three-year disqualification along with an order for €500 compensation to Gardai, as he warned” “If anything like this occurs in the future, you will go straight to prison.”

Funding boost for Wellington Hall project Work will commence in the coming weeks on the restoration and rebuilding of the first floor of the Wellington Hall on St Mary’s Road in Dundalk after the hall committee has been successful with their proposal for a €100,000 grant from the County Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership Programmatic Budget support. The award will enable the Wellington Hall to be developed as a shared space to underpin and sustain good cross
community relationships on an ongoing basis. The Wellington Hall Project was launched by the Church of Ireland in 2010 with the aim of restoring and renovating the iconic dilapidated Georgian building to create a shared community space available to all. A dedicated committee has met regularly to investigate applications for grants and to organise a wide variety of fundraising initiatives. The committee is made up of a
group of volunteers from the Parish of St Nicholas and from potential users of the Wellington Hall and the wider community. “Over the last two years, and against an adverse economic climate, we have raised over €70,000 through our own fundraising initiatives, which has been used to complete the first phase of our restoration: to renew the roof, refurbish the main hall, the bathrooms and the kitchen and otherwise render the
hall fit for public use,” said Brigitte Nelson, secretary of the Wellington Hall. “We have been overwhelmed by the support and goodwill from not only our small parish community, but more importantly from the wider community of Dundalk and beyond.” The Wellington Hall was built in 1812 as a free interdenominational school for all the children of Dundalk. Work will commence in the coming weeks and it is hoped

that by the end of October then Phase 2 of the project will bea complete. The first floor of the historic building will be entirely refurbished and restored, creating three meeting spaces. Schools’ exciting journey Life is a journey, and pupils from two local schools have just completed an exciting project on that theme, bringing them on a journey that could shape the rest of their lives. As part of a joint Cross-Border Intergenerational Project, fifth class pupils from Scoil Mhuire na nGael, Dundalk and fourth class from St. Francis N.S. Blackrock have been working together on a project called ‘Schools Connecting Cultures’. The children have been exploring the themes of ‘What’s Special to me’ and ‘Me and My Place’ through the topic of ‘Journeys’. The children’s ‘Journey’ together began with a visit to the County Mu-
and Olive McKinley from Scoil Mhuire na nGael and Anne Donaghy, Deirdre Clarke and Oreena Lawless from St. Francis NS spearheaded the project, leading the children to explore memories, values and cultural memorabilia associated with land, sea and air journeys they and their parents have undertaken. The children then began making individual projects, documenting these journeys.
Pupils in both classes also began recording podcasts on iPads and these podcasts served as an interesting and informative way for the children to learn more about each other and their journeys. The projects were showcased by the schools to their families in the Louth County Museum on Wednesday May 29 and remained on display, for members of the community to view, over the following week. The project has promoted mutual understanding and respect between the children of the two participating schools, and raised awareness of Cultural Diversity. Many new friendships have been formed in the process.

As yet, the TD says he has yet to make any decision, it is too important an issue to hurry into he says. “I entered into the hearings with an open mind. I have spoken with people from Prolife, Pro-choice, doctors, priests, women who had had abortions. I’m not

That it won’t open the flood gates“, he said, adding that it is the biggest decision he will have to make. ”I have to look to my own conscience. I feel the weight of it on my shoulders.” Deputy Fitzpatrick said that he asked Enda Kenny for an open vote on the issue which would allow TDs to vote with their conscience. However the Fine Gael Leader imposed the party whip and a vote is expected on Thursday this week.

Man told lifestyle Get your skates on of stealing is not acceptable
A man who was told his lifestyle of stealing was not acceptable was sentenced to six months in prison at Dundalk District Court. In imposing the sentence, Judge Michael Conlon, stated that the Tomas Sukys of 132 Castleross, Dundalk, had not learned lessons from previous appearances. “The defendant has a consistent history of theft and the lifestyle described to me is not acceptable. It can’t be condoned, nor should it be seen to be condoned. The lessons have not been learnt as he continued to commit crimes while on bail”, said the judge.
The court heard that Mr Sukys, who is currently serving a sentence in Wheatfield, entered RQ O’Neills shop took a set of knives valued at €169 and left without paying for them. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his client has been living in Ireland for eight months and not entitled to social welfare. He had worked in a meat factory but was not paid legally. “He says that he has stolen in order to live as anything he steals, he sells on”, said Mr O’Reilly who added that his client has a partner and young child.

Dundalk Town Council, in conjunction with Dundalk Tidy Towns, has just launched their Improve our Town Awards 2013. This annual competition sees individual residents, housing estates and businesses compete in their various categories to be chosen as leaders in environmental visual enhancement in their area. The standard has been set high in previous years by award winners Jockey’s Pub in Anne Street and Mc Keown’s Bar in Clanbrassil Street. It takes commitment and dedication to maintain the high measure of environmental improvements that they have undertaken year after year and the resulting contribution they make to Dundalk is appreciated by locals and visitors to Dundalk. We particularly appeal to businesses in the main streets of Dundalk to make a huge effort this year, as judging in two national Tidy Towns Awards categories takes place over the summer months. Nomination forms are available in this week’s Dundalk Leader and also from the reception at Dundalk Town Council in the Town Hall, Crowe Street. Closing date to submit your nomination is: Friday July 12.

Council seize 128 horses in Louth By Niamh Kirk
Louth County Council has seized 128 horses over the past five years and had to euthanise more than half of them according to figures compiled last week. They stated that Louth County Council has spent more than €120, 500 between 2008 and 2012 on seizing and putting down the stray animals. The problem of stray horses in Co Louth hit its peak last winter when 13 horses were found starved to death in the Cooley Mountains. Earlier this
month the Dundalk Leader reported that the problem of abandoned horses was again at crisis point following the discovery of the carcasses of two horses that had been discovered by a walker in a field close to Dundalk town where 15 horses were grazing. The Louth County Veterinary Officer Gareth Shine described how their services are suffering a deluge of abandoned horses. He said that the situation was so severe that it was effectively a cull of horses as there is nowhere for them to go after they have been taken into shelters.
There is a staying period of only five days in the local shelter, after which if they have not been reclaimed by their owners or rehomed, they are put down. Joe from Holly’s Horse Haven in the Cooley Mountains says that it is best for them. They have around 50 horses in the sanctuary, but at Christmas they had more than 100. Feed at the time was both scarce and very expensive as prices of bales of hay doubled. The cold weather forced the starving horses in Cooley down to the bottom of the moun-
tains. “It is better to euthanise them, it is better than them starving to death,” said Joe. He told of how they had found a mare that had recently foaled but had no milk. They tried to bottle feed the foal but without the first milk, colostrums and none after, it was not healthy enough to survive. The mare was so weak she could not stand and a day later, she died. Fourth drink driving conviction
A man who was convicted of drink driving for a fourth time was disqualified for 20 years and warned that he will immediately activate his six month suspended sentence if he drives within the next two years. Savajunas Gubaras of 246 Greenfield Court,
Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence after a breath test showed that he was over the limit when stopped by Gardai at Francis St on January 4 this year. He had been disqualified at the time. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated that his 34-year-old client had been in Ireland since
2005 and had a wife and four children. He had been working in the building trade and as a cleaner by was unemployed for the past 18 months. He accepted that his record was poor in relation to road traffic matters and he was aware that he wouldn’t be driv-
ing in this country again. Judge Michael Coghlan imposed a 20-year disqualification and a six month sentence, suspended for two years, as he warned: “If he gets into a car to drive he will immediately activate the sentence.”
Redeemer Girls’ School take on the cycle challenge
Redeemer Girls School celebrated National Bike Week recently as part of their Green-Schools Programme and went that extra mile for National Cycle to School Day by competing in a Cross Border Cycling Challenge. Five schools from the North and five from the South were chosen to compete with the aim of getting as many pupils as possible cycling, scooting or flickering to school to be in with a chance of winning part of a €2,000 prize fund. Green-Schools Co-ordinator Patrick O’Rourke was delighted with the success of the day as over 90% of the school including staff members got on their bikes to take on the challenge. They are currently
waiting to hear the results of the competition and are looking forward to the awards ceremony in Derry in September. The girls from 4th & 5th Class continued on their bikes and cycled onto the County Museum for Green-Schools Bike Workshops run by Susan Doorley and Sorcha Brophy, GreenSchools Travel Education Officers with An Taisce. The Redeemer Girls are currently in their first year of working for their Fourth Green Flag for Sustainable Transport and busy girls that they are, also have project work on display at the Green-Schools Travel Louth Exhibition in the County Library which will run for all of Bike Week.

Tennis club celebrate 100th anniversary By Niamh Kirk
Noc Kupały to słowiańskie świeto związane z letnim przesileniem Słońca, obchodzone w czasie najkrótszej nocy w roku, co przypada około dnia 21 czerwca. Przeprowadzane w jej trakcie zwyczaje i obrzędy słowiańskie miały zapewnić świętującym zdrowie i urodzaj. Prawdopodobnie pozostałości dawnych wiosennych obrzędów magicznych kończących zaklinanie „dobrego początku”, nawiązujących do obrzędowości
zadusznej i nadchodzącego urodzaju. Agnieszka Boniewicz
Dundalk Tennis Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary by serving up a treat for tennis lovers as special guest will be in attendance during the Fyffes Junior Open. The club was established in 1913 and is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country. Members celebrated with a private function on mid-summers night and will continue to celebrate a centenary of success as they open the gates over the coming weeks to hundreds of players and those who take inspiration from Wimbledon. The Junior Open will take place from June 29 to July 6, and it will see more than 200 young players take to courts to face off in different categories. Players come from all over the north east to compete in the competition which is for players under 18 years old and many of the clubs younger

players will take part in the coming event. Two of the clubs most successful younger players, Joseph Mullen and Ruth Copas will not be taking part as they are competing in a similar international event in Edinburgh. “They are among the top players in their
age bracket in Ireland,” said John McGahon the juniors head coach at Dundalk Tennis Club. As part of the launch of the Fyffes Junior Open a special event is taking place in the Marshes on Saturday June 29. A tennis court will be set up in the town centre shopping centre and some of the clubs coaches and players will be giving a demonstration. Dundalk Tennis Club estimates they have 500 members from under 8 to over 80 and John said that there is a noticeable spike in interest in tennis on the back of Wimbledon coverage. To give people in insight into life on the courts, they are hosting an Open Day on July 13 and will welcome former Irish Professional Conor Niland and Elena Baltacha who competed in her eleventh Wimbledon Championship this week. The open day takes place this July 13 from 10am to 4pm.
Missed chance to get licence back A Dundalk man who was serving a four year driving ban could have been back behind the wheel as early as next month, but instead earned a new ten-year ban after driving while disqualified. Mark Riordan of 17 Kingswood, Rock Road, Dundalk also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance in respect of four incidents inside a month last year. The offences occurred on November 20 and 27 and December 3 and 13 in Dundalk. On each occasion he was asked to produce documents but he
failed to do so. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, said that his client could offer no reason as to why he was driving on the occasions and outlined how foolish his actions were, following a four year disqualification imposed in November 2010. “Given that he has had no convictions previous to that, he would have been able to apply for his licence to be restored in November of last year, which could have meant he was back driving in July. “It almost defies logic that he has placed himself in court and
he must accept that the court will take a dim view of this. He must have known that Gardai would have recognised him”, added Mr MacGuill in relation to the 26-year-old unemployed carpenter. Judge Michael Coghlan imposed a €500 in respect of each charge of driving without insurance and in relation to driving while disqualified, he gave the defendant the opportunity to avoid jail by imposing a six month sentence suspended for two years. “Stupidity where vehicles are used and abused can’t be
rewarded and this is a case of repeated abuse of the traffic laws, while it appears that a disqualification order has no value. “The defendant’s main activities are road traffic matters so I won’t put him in a place where he may learn other tricks”, added Judge Coghlan as he imposed the suspended sentence, taking other matters into account. “I hope that if a lesson is to be learnt from this it is that circumstances will become more bleak if he goes near a car”, concluded the judge.

In 2012, the Helpline received 10,000 calls but could only take fewer than a quarter due to a
shortage of support staff. The helpline is currently manned 23 hours a week but with more volunteers, the service will be extended. Volunteers undertake an initial 6 week training period and are expected to contribute four hours a week. The LGBT helpline can be accessed at 1890929539 Mon-Wed 6.30-9pm, Thursday and Friday 4-9pm, Saturday and Sunday 4-6pm.

Pupils celebrate Gaeltacht scholarships By Paul Byrne Nine pupils from Scoil Réalt Na Mara are heading north this summer where they will spend a week speaking ‘as Gaeilge’ in the Gaeltacht in Donegal. The pupils excelled in the oral exams earlier on in the year and were rewarded with a half scholarship for the Gaeltacht course. Contributions were gratefully accepted from councillors Tomás O Searcaigh and Oliver Morgan to help fund the trip to Colaiste Aoidh Mhic Bhricne in Carraig, Donegal. According to Sile Uí Chíaráin who helps promote the language
in the school, Réalt Na Mara is one of the biggest supporters of our native tongue in Dundalk. “We try to encourage the children to speak a bit of Irish everyday not just in the classroom but outside it as well. Our principal Mrs Hession is a strong supporter of the language and as a school we are big believers in making sure the language stays alive.” she explained. We have Seachtain na Gaeilge every year which promotes the language and includes our Céilí Mór as well as the presentation of the perpetual Gradám na Gaeilge trophy which is

awarded to the pupil who is seen to make the most effort in speaking Irish around the school” added Bn Uí Chíaráin. Tomás Sharkey who contributed to the fund in order to help send the pupils to Donegal said it was ‘very important to keep the ideas of the Gaeltacht alive as they give pupils the confidence to converse in their native tongue in everyday life’. He also noted how it was advantageous to pupils around Dundalk who intended enrolling in the brand new Colaiste Lu Gaelscoil which opens in September.
A man who was seen by Gardai driving while he was serving a seven year disqualification was given a five month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Dundalk District Court. Gary Bailey of 14 Grange Close, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai on Jocelyn St, Dundalk, on Friday November 2 last year but failed to produce documents as requested. The court was told that he had 51 previous convictions including five for drink driving and seven for no insurance. He had been disqualified for seven years in November 2010. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill stated that his 27-year-old client accepts that he shouldn’t have been driving and that he regrets finding himself before the court. He stated that Mr Bailey had spent a lot of time
in prison and had suffered difficulties with drugs and alcohol. “He has been trying to deal with these problems and on the date in question he took the car to drive for what he thought was an important reason, but accepts that it wasn’t. He has been trying to deal with his difficulties and as far as I am aware, he hasn’t come to the attention of Gardai since this incident. Judge Michael Coghlan imposed a fine of €500 and disqualified for driving with no insurance, and the five month suspended sentence for driving while disqualified. He was disqualified from driving for 12 yearsa and other matters were taken into account. “The evidence suggests that while he cleaned up his act in some areas, the use of vehicles on public roads is not one of them”, stated Judge Coghlan.

Carlingford Festival of Cycling Carlingford was a festival of Cycling over the last weekend with Cuchulainn Cycling Club hosting a hugely successful National Championships. The action kicked off on Thursday night with the 40km Time Trial Championships, going from Carlingford almost all the way to Dundalk and back. The men’s event was once again won by the defending champion Michael Hutchinson in a blisteringly quick time of 50:07, At one stage club president Pat O`Shaughnessey was following Hutchinson on his motorbike as the rider clipped along at over 60kph. The women’s title went to Caroline Ryan of Gardaí CC & the Under 23 title to Ryan Mullen. There was some local success with Eve McCrytsal taking a bronze medal in the ladies. Saturday morning and the first road race event of the weekend was the Veterans Championship. Next up was the Elite women, contesting the 104km Championships. The race was won by defending champion Melaine Spatt with Eve McCrystal just outside the top six. On Sunday all was set for the 170km men’s Championships. While the village was decked out in it’s finest the
weather would not cooperate with brutal winds and rain battering the 130 strong field. An exciting race was won by defending cham-
pion Matt Brammeier. Overall the weekend was a huge success with many a seasoned cyclist saying it was the most professional and well run
event the country has ever seen. Credit must go to the organising club, the Gardaí and all the marshals.

NOVENA NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA
O St. Martha, I resort to you and to your petition and faith. I offer up to you this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour that you enjoyed when Our Saviour lodged in your house. I beseech you to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask you St. Martha to overcome the dragon which you cast at your feet. One Our Father and three Hail Mary's and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended no matter how difficult. p.s.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
Dear Heart of Jesus. In the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (Mention Favour). Take it dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart. Where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine, Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise to publish it and the favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Happy Salad Days in Dulargy National School It was time for the salad harvest this week in Dulargy National School where the School Gardening Project is in its fourth year. This year, 6th class grew a range of salad crops, including ice berg lettuce, red lettuce, radishes and scallions as well as beetroot and carrots. The crops were harvested by the pupils, who then made a delicious salad in class for everyone to try. They added in chive flowers, herbs and nasturtium leaves from the school herb garden for extra variety and flavour. The project is run by parents Roisin Cotter and Terri McKeown and funded by the Parents Association. It gives each child in the school the opportunity to sow seeds and watch their plants grow, until they are ready to be brought home. Each class grows flowers or vegetables or both. This year Junior Infants grew sunflowers, Senior Infants grew tomatoes, 1st and 2nd class grew courgettes, peas and sweet corn, 3rd class grew heritage potatoes and turnips, 4th class grew rocket, coriander, salad bowl
Sixth Class pupils from Dulargy NS
lettuce, poppies and radishes, 5th class grew carrots and parsnips and 6th class grew salads, beetroot, carrots, garlic
and onions. In addition to the herb garden and vegetable plot, the school is now in the process of build-
ing a new outdoor classroom and garden area which will be a wonderful addition to school facilities.
