SEASON BROCHURE AUGUST 2010 – JANUARY 2011
THE REP 1
Welcome to the 2010 Autumn Season Our ambition here at Dundee Rep is to engage with as wide a range of people as possible, creating exhilarating and powerful shared experiences in the theatre, out on tour or in the community. This autumn we are trying out a number of new ideas across the three creative strands of the Rep in an effort to make our work ever more surprising and stimulating. After a highly successful 10th Anniversary season, our award-winning Ensemble is breaking new ground both locally and nationally. Sunshine on Leith returns to the Rep before embarking on a 10 week tour taking in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. This is a major undertaking for us and I am delighted that there is interest in the show from so many parts of the UK. Much closer to home, our talented actors are taking on the challenge of directing each other in Alan Bennett’s brilliant monologues, Talking Heads. The show will play at the Rep but we are also touring to 6 community centres around Dundee, so that people who can’t always make it here to the Rep still have an opportunity to experience our work. This is another exciting new departure for us and we hope to repeat the experiment in the future. This is followed by Ibsen’s ground-breaking classic A Doll’s House directed by the Rep’s Associate Director, Jemima Levick (who recently won Best Director at this year’s Scottish Theatre Critics awards for her wonderful production of The Elephant Man). We finish the year with Charles Way’s charming version of the timeless tale for the whole family, Sleeping Beauty.
Scottish Dance Theatre, the Rep’s fantastic contemporary dance company has also been touring in Europe as well as playing at the Edinburgh Fringe and we’re looking forward to welcoming them home with a really strong programme of work including an experimental night Backstage Pass which features dance happening in various spaces all around the building. Another new departure is our “Youth Take Over Week”, led by the Rep’s incredibly busy Creative Learning team when we will hand the theatre over to young people for a series of performances and events throughout the building. Around these activities of our own we have programmed a range of visiting work of real diversity. Blood, Sweat and Tears choreographed by Liv Lorent (the creator of SDT’s amazing show Luxuria) is a brilliant piece of dance theatre exploring parenting and childhood which I saw in Newcastle last year and absolutely loved. I’m also looking forward to the first visit of Vox Motus to the Rep. They are one of the most exciting companies to emerge from Scotland in recent years and their show The not so fatal death of Grandpa Freddo should be a hit at the Fringe this year before it visits the Rep. With Claire Sweeney in Tell Me on a Sunday, Brenda Cochrane in Just for Joe and a whole host of other dance, music and comedy I hope that you will find something to tempt you to join us at the Rep this autumn.
James Brining, Artistic Director.
Dundee Rep Theatre comprises Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scottish Dance Theatre and Rep Creative Learning.

DUNDEE REP ENSEMBLE presents
6 THE REP
By ALAN BENNETT A Chip in the Sugar / Bed Among the Lentils / Her Big Chance Dundee Rep Ensemble presents from Alan Bennett’s classic collection, three deeply moving and affectionate tales of love, hope and hidden truths. Bed Among the Lentils sees an alcoholic vicar’s wife finding a semblance of happiness in an affair with an Indian shop owner, an aspiring actress finds herself auditioning for a soft porn film in Her Big Chance and a middle-aged mummy’s boy ruins his mother’s chances of happiness in A Chip in the Sugar.
These brilliant monologues portray all the emotions of human life and paint unforgettable portraits of damaged lives and thwarted expectations. Originally broadcast in 1988, these award-winning monologues sealed Alan Bennett’s reputation as the master of observation; they are at once darkly comic, tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting. Talking Heads has a wit, humour and insight into society that will appeal to everyone. Talking Heads will be performed in the following Dundee Community Centres from 3 – 18 Sept: Ardler - Douglas - Whitfield - Kirkton and Menzieshill.Contact Dundee Rep Box Office for more info.

by Henrik Ibsen A new version by Samuel Adamson Nora Helmer has it all; perfect house, two beautiful children and a husband who’s just got the top job as director of the local bank. However this idyllic life is built on deception and everything is about to come tumbling down.
Ibsen’s best known drama is a powerful expression of his radical beliefs about women’s relationships with men, the folly of idealism and a quest for freedom. A Doll’s House is the story of a woman who wakes up to reality and sees that her married life is based on a lie.

As a couple experience a tender and all-consuming love for their newborn baby, they begin to fight for affection and attention from each other. Hanging in There is an internationally acclaimed work portraying the inner-workings and selfdelusion needed to prolong a negotiation process between two equally legitimate political bodies.
Choreographer/Director/Performer Dylan Quinn Fallout is a critically acclaimed solo performance piece (duration 45 minutes), which explores the increasing levels in and objectification of violence in our society, as seen through the lens of a slightly manic sports commentator.

Touch tours Touch tours provide an opportunity for blind and partially sighted people to explore the set, props and costumes through a combination of verbal descriptions and touching. This helps with their enjoyment and visualisation of the play. Information on Tour dates are included in our brochure.
Captioned performances Captioning is similar to television subtitling and gives deaf, deafened or hard of hearing people access to performances. A Captioner carefully prepares and cues text that appears in real time on units placed to the side of the stage, centrally or within the set. Dundee Rep Theatre is working to provide Captioned performances for at least one performance in each of its own productions.
