APRIL Mon Mar 29 - Sat 10 Apr

Welcome to the 2010 Summer Season Two strands of our work which have increased in importance over the last few years are work for children and families and musicals, so it’s fitting that our 10th anniversary season culminates with two such pieces. The Elves and the Shoemakers carries on the momentum established with Doctor Korczak’s Example and The Little Mermaid. Mike Kenny’s script is a delightful retelling of the popular fairy story by the brothers Grimm. Featuring some of the Rep’s most experienced actors and a beautiful design I’m really looking forward to bringing my own young children to see the show and I hope that you enjoy it too. Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim is one of the greatest musicals ever written. It combines extraordinary music, a gripping story and amazing characters. I remember being completely blown away when I first saw it in the early 1990s. Sweeney Todd builds on previous musical successes at the Rep such as Cabaret, Gypsy and Sunshine on Leith and I think it marks a fitting way to bring our tenth anniversary to a close. With a cast of 16 and a 9-piece band it’s set to be a major production for us and there is already great interest in the show, so make sure you book early. This is a production I have wanted to direct for years and I’m delighted to be making it here in Dundee.

In and around these two shows created by the Ensemble, we have programmed a diverse range of visiting work which should appeal to most tastes. There’s great visiting drama including Girls’ Night, Mull Theatre with Tom McGrath’s Laurel and Hardy, Lesley Joseph in Hot Flush, the tap musical, Stepping Out and an intriguing new piece looking at the life and work of Ian Dury called Raspberry. We have a range of music including the great Carol Kidd, James Grant of Love and Money fame and Niki King singing Billie Holiday classics, as well as the ever popular Blazin’ Fiddles and contemporary folk groups Daimh and Buille. We also have comedy from Jo Caulfield, Raymond Mearns and Bruce Fummey and dance, in the form of Jaleo who return to the Rep with their passionate blend of flamenco song and guitar. Closer to home, we’re pleased to be presenting work from a number of the Reps performance groups including Dundee Rep’s Women’s Singing Group and Adult Drama Groups, with Dundee Voices, Dundee Stories. I look forward to seeing you at the Rep as Spring turns to Summer.

SWEENEY TODD Wed 19 May - Sat 12 June at 7.30pm ‘A staggering theatre spectacle...’ DAILY NEWS

THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET BY STEPHEN SONDHEIIM HUGH WHEELER ADAPTED BY CHRISTOPHER BOND BOOK BY

Don’t miss this extraordinary tale of revenge and obsession in Stephen Sondheim’s musical about the world’s most infamous barber, Sweeney Todd. Returning to the greedy streets of London after being wrongly exiled, Sweeney is gripped by revenge, blinded by rage and desperate for the throat of Judge Turpin who ravaged his wife after unjustly sending him away. With the amorous pie-shop owner Mrs Lovett whispering in his ear, Sweeney embarks upon a murderous campaign to right the

wrongs he has endured, re-opening his Fleet Street barber shop and slitting the throats of his customers before they are turned into London’s tastiest pies.

unashamedly macabre lyrics and the murderous tale itself driven by love, retribution, obsession and lust means you can’t afford to miss this show.

This large-scale musical is the latest and most ambitious yet served up by award-winning Dundee Rep Ensemble. The power of Sondheim’s music, played live by a nine-piece band, his glitteringly witty and

Dundee Rep Ensemble’s previous musical successes include Sunshine on Leith, Gypsy, Flora the Red Menace and Cabaret.

James Grant

A co-production beween Fittings Multimedia Arts, Sounds of Progress and the Tron Theatre, Glasgow

Raspberry By Garry Robson & Leigh Stirling Directed by Gordon Dougall

Fri 2 April at 8.30pm Widely regarded as one of the finest singer-songwriters and performers around, ex Love And Money frontman James Grant plays material from all his critically acclaimed solo albums and a smattering of old favourites in a solo acoustic setting. This is a show not to be missed, raw, heart-rending and uplifting.

Tues 13 & Wed 14 April at 7.30pm Oi Oi! In a small wee town where tin was shaped and forged, a blacksmith had a daughter not quite the trim. Rita was a bit different.

And that’s how it would have gone on if Spasticus and the Rays hadn’t come along and changed just about everything... inspired by the life and times of Ian Dury.

Leigh Stirling and directed by Gordon Dougall, Raspberry was produced in its first incarnation by SOP and Oran Mor in collaboration with Fittings.

Now as far as the blacksmith was concerned this was a cosmic joke too far, so he set about changing things. Coz tin was his game, within which he’d achieved a modicum of fame, he tried to bend and shape her like a Uri Geller spoon.

Raspberry is a juicily gothic piece of music theatre that muses on the idea of perfection and perfectability. Oi Oi!

Sat 3 July at 11am and 3pm

Sat 19 June at 7.30pm

Her peerless voice swoops and soars around the Great American Songbook and her pick of popular tunes, whether caressing ballads with wistful romance, or swinging a standard like she’s the life and soul of the party.

Pinocchio

Geppetto uses the objects of a carpenter’s workshop to tell the tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy, and the puppet-maker who wants to be a real father.

Carol is joined by a top flight quartet including her long-time guitarist Nigel Clark with whom she has just recorded a new album for Linn Records.

Puppetry, shadows, illusion and especially composed music combine to create a show with something for all ages; it’s inventive, visually and verbally witty with a big heart. Pinocchio is carved on stage, brushes become a fox and the shadow of two saws transforms into a giant shark. An element of improvisation makes each performance unique to its audience.
