Welcome to the 2010 Spring Season Our 10th anniversary celebrations continue with two brand new Rep productions, the best of current touring shows and news of a really exciting project in May. Sex, violence and disaffected youth; I was bound to love Equus when I read it as a teenager. Recently it’s been performed in the West End and on Broadway and I believe it’s exactly the right kind of play for the Rep. It has great writing, some breathtaking dramatic moments and rich, enduring themes looking at why young people can become excluded and marginalised from society at large. It promises to be a raw and thrilling theatrical event not to be missed.

once again challenging ourselves. I’ve wanted to direct this show for at least 15 years so I’m incredibly excited about getting to work on it. We expect tickets to sell extremely fast, so book early to avoid disappointment. To complement the Ensemble productions, we are running a new range of behind the scenes and meet the actors events aimed at unlocking our work. See page 22 for details. You, our audience, are vital to the success of the Rep, so come along, have your say and get involved.

I want the Rep to be for everyone, adults and children alike, so building on the huge Easter holiday success of last year, we’re creating a new show for children of all ages. The Elves and the Shoemaker by Mike Kenny is a gentle and enchanting experience for 3-7 year olds with two of the Ensemble’s most experienced actors, captivating puppetry and live music.

We’ve also gathered the best range of touring shows and events for you this Spring, including our own internationally acclaimed Scottish Dance Theatre previewing two new works. We are also delighted to bring the best of Scotland’s hip hop dance crews to the Rep stage – Breakin’ Rules! Whether it’s drama, comedy, dance, music or Hardeep Kohli doing some comedy whilst cooking an Indian meal, I really hope that there is more than one thing to tempt you to come out to the Rep during the dark days after Christmas.

I’d also like to give you a heads up for the next show I’m directing, Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim. The Rep has carved out a reputation for making the best musicals in Scotland over the last few years and in producing Sweeney, one of the most thrilling and dramatic pieces of musical theatre ever written, we are

James Brining, Artistic Director.

Dundee Rep Theatre comprises Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scottish Dance Theatre and Rep Creative Learning.

What could be worse for a Celtic fan than being locked up in a police cell on the day of an Old Firm match? For Tim, there is one thing worse – finding himself banged up with Billy, a fervent Rangers supporter. Des Dillon`s entertaining comedy highlights the nature of bigotry and sectarianism within the West of Scotland. The play also takes our two protagonists on a journey of self discovery. Hail Hail, We are the People!

Wed 17 – Sat 20 February at 8pm Scottish Dance Theatre, Scotland’s national contemporary dance company is delighted and proud to exclusively premier two engaging works at home at Dundee Rep prior to touring in the UK and Europe in 2010.

The Life and times of Girl A Choreographed by Ben Duke from Lost Dog this work is about a woman trying to tell us something important about what is happening now. What she needs is a film crew and a financier, what she’s got is a stage and some dancers. A piece about moments of crisis both emotional and financial, when we all need is to use less to say more.

NQR NQR* is an irreverent inquiry into the idea of ‘normality’. It examines our irrepressible eccentricities that defy attempts to fit into the mold. NQR is a chance to look at and think differently about difference. This work is a three way collaboration co-directed by SDT Artistic Director, Janet Smith, SDT’s Dance Agent for Change, Caroline Bowditch and Marc Brew, currently Associate Director Fellow with the company. *Not Quite Right - Acronym formally used in medical records to describe unexplained difference. ‘It is magnificent. Rarely does contemporary drama probe so deep – an electrifying evening of theatre’. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart is brought the most challenging case of his career to date; to investigate the blinding of six horses by the unassuming stable boy Alan Strang. The only son of an opinionated father and a devoutly religious mother Alan seems like any normal seventeen year old; his life appears routine, his passion for horses quite healthy, and his family loving. However, on Alan’s first journey of sexual discovery what is revealed is a far more complex series of circumstances, which lead him to behave in a most devastating way.

As Dysart exposes the truths behind the boy’s demons, he finds himself face-to-face with his own. Equus is an intimate drama of epic proportions uncovering dark secrets and deep desires. Physical and exciting, this production should not be missed. * Equus contains adult themes, nudity and strong language. * recommended for ages 14+

This popular story is brought to life by Mike Kenny, one of the UK’s leading writers for children and young people and members of our award-winning Ensemble. The kindly shoemaker and his wife are penniless. They must find enough money to pay their landlord and keep their shop and a roof over their heads for Christmas. With their final pennies they buy just enough leather for one last pair of shoes and cut out the pattern before bed. By the next morning an amazing pair of shoes has been made and when a very important gentleman visits the poor shoemaker to buy the exquisite shoes that mysteriously appear on his workbench, he can’t believe his luck. Just who has crept into the shoemaker’s workshop and woven this wonderful magic?

This one hour event is open to the public and happens in the auditorium an hour before the show and involves members of the cast and creative team talking through the process of putting on the show you’re about to watch. Why not book for this short event and find out what goes on behind the scenes of a production; book when you’re buying your tickets.

It also has an element of participation – you may be asked to join in! Book your school into our next Interactive, students and teachers alike will get so much out of this event.
