MASERATI GHIBLI HYBRID THEY SAY IT’S BETTER LATE THAN NEVER. WITH THAT IN MIND THE CLASSIC ITALIAN CARMAKER—FAMED FOR PERFORMANCEORIENTED VEHICLES, WITH A MOTORSPORT BLOODLINE LIKE THE QUATTROPORTE, GRANTURISMO, AND LEVANTE—HAS FINALLY TAKEN ITS FIRST STEP INTO THE WORLD OF ELECTRIFIED VEHICLES WITH THE LAUNCH OF ITS FIRST-EVER HYBRID ELECTRIC CAR BASED ON THE FOUR-DOOR LUXURY GHIBLI—THE GHIBLI HYBRID.

Maserati has added blue elements to the side vents, brake calipers, and the brand’s trident logo on the rear pillar Design-wise, the 2021 Ghibli Hybrid has received a facelift that tells us much about its “green” evolution. Maserati has added blue elements to the side vents, brake calipers, and the brand’s trident logo on the rear pillar. The same vivid color symbolizing “clean mobility” features as a theme inside, with blue trident logos on the headrests. The four-door luxury supercar comes with some subtle changes to the front grille, featuring bars redesigned to represent a tuning fork—a musical device that’s known to emit a sound of extreme purity and precision. The rear has also been reworked with ‘boomerang’ style taillights borrowed from the Giugiaro-designed 3200 GT and the Alfieri concept car. The new Ghibli Hybrid’s interior exudes luxury, refinement, and modernity, thanks in part to its new Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) multimedia system, which has grown in size from 8.4 to 10.1 inches and runs the new Android Automotive system—now a far easier-to-use system showcasing new graphics. Better yet, a new fully digital instrument panel has replaced the old analog version, delivering a more exciting driving experience to those looking for greener alternatives. Despite its green credentials, the iconic Maserati roar that has been the signature engine and exhaust note of every vehicle carrying the trident badge will still be present in the Ghibli Hybrid, thanks to the optimized exhaust with specially designed resonators!

The new Ghibli Hybrid’s interior exudes luxury, refinement and modernity Maserati has chosen a mild hybrid setup explicitly focused on improving performance while reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The innovative powertrain features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, along with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that serves as the starter motor and can recoup energy when the car brakes. In addition the electric supercharged e-Booster supported by a battery mounted in the back, ensures better weight distribution and handling dynamics. Performance-wise, the figures are still pretty eye watering. Maserati’s first-ever hybrid car delivers 330 hp and 450 Nm of torque, enabling the Ghibli Hybrid to go from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 255 km/h. Remarkably, the Ghibli Hybrid weighs about 80 kg less than the diesel variant while producing 25 percent less carbon dioxide, making it a perfect embodiment of Maserati’s DNA, which remains uncompromised despite changing technology!

LG LAUNCHES WEARABLE AIR PURIFIER IN QATAR LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier Employs High-Performance Filters and Sensor-Controlled Fans for Clean Air and Optimal Breathing Comfort

F

ollowing its unveiling at IFA 2020, LG Electronics (LG) has today launched its personal air solution in Qatar, known as the LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier.

As a global leader in clean air solutions, LG has long been associated with empowering healthy, hygienic lifestyles and this reputation has resulted in the creation of an entire new category of wearable air purifier technology to deliver a new level of portable protection. LG’s ever-expanding lineup of PuriCare air purifiers includes single and double tower models for residential spaces, a commercial model for offices and even a portable device for use on-the-go. With its latest edition to the PuriCare family, LG seeks to ensure that clean air and optimal breathing comfort are maintained from wherever the user may be. While the importance of maintaining healthy air quality is a topic receiving more widespread attention now, discussions around air quality have been a major concern for nations and individuals around the world for a number of years. LG’s PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier has been in development since 2017 – undergoing three years of extensive R&D and product testing. Ensuring Comfort Within its research, LG identified common challenges for mask-wearers, including regulating air flow without becoming too warm or claustrophobic and having glasses periodically fog up. Additionally, as people become more conscious of the environment, the need for a more sustainable solution was clear. The PuriCare Wearable has been ergonomically designed, based on extensive facial shape analysis. The device fits snugly around the user’s face, minimizing air leakage around the nose and chin area. The face guard also features a silicone pad which seeks to promote comfortable fit for hours on end and reduce the fogging up of glasses, while the inner cover prevents internal contamination.

10

L I F E ST Y L E

“With the launch of the PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier, LG continues to demonstrate its commitment to positively impacting people’s lives through the power of technology. We look forward to seeing how this innovative product reimagines the future of air pu-rification for users across Qatar. We have full confidence that this technology will en-hance quality of life and provide people with greater peace-of-mind, wherever they may be,” said Mr. Sajed Jassim Mohammed Sulaiman, Vice Chairman and Managing Direc-tor of Video Home & Electronic Centre. Maintaining Hygiene To deliver a new level of personal protection, the LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier harnesses two H13 HEPA filters, which work to prevent up to 99.95% of harmful airborne matter, such as viruses, bacteria and common allergens from entering the wearer’s respiratory system . LG’s patented Respiratory Sensor detects the cycle and volume of the user’s breathing, automatically adjusting the PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier’s DUAL Fans accordingly via three speed settings. The dynamic fans are able to speed up when the wearer is inhaling, and slow down to reduce resistance upon exhaling.

A Practical Solution The LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier comes with a built-in, rechargeable 820MaH battery which can deliver up to eight hours of operation at low speed and four hours on the highest setting. To recharge, users simply need to connect the device to a power source using the provided USB C cable. For added convenience, key components such as the filters, inner cover, face guard, ear straps and strap extenders are also easy to remove and replace – extending usability. Coming soon, LG will also release a unique case for the PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier, which deploys the company’s UVnano sanitization technology to eliminate 99.99 percent of germs in just 30 minutes, using UV-C LED lights . The case can also remove moisture from internal components caused by the wearer’s breath, charge the device from empty to full in just two hours and send notifications to the user’s smartphone via the LG ThinQ app when filters need replacing. “The introduction of the PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier to the Qatar market represents our continued commitment to not only championing innovation, but also bringing advanced technology to market at rapid pace. While this device could not be any timelier demand for portable protection and access to clean air is not new. For years, we have seen growing interest and concern for maintaining good air quality – which is why we have continued to expand our PuriCare lineup. We are seeing interest in sectors ranging from government and B2B organizations, right through to everyday consumers. We are proud to empower people across Qatar to breathe better air, while remaining comfortable,” said Mr. Hongju Jeon, President, LG Electronics Gulf. The LG PuriCare Wearable Air Purifier is now available in Qatar at LG Brand shops, leading hypermarkets and electronics stores for the retail price of 699 QAR. Two H13 HEPA Filters are provided in the box, with additional filters available for the retail price of 79 QAR.

INTERVIEW

AN ARTIST OF BLUE AN INTERVIEWWITH

MUNA AL-BADER By Natali Leonova

An artist, entrepreneur, IT engineer, business analyst, and most importantly, Qatar’s art ambassador at UNESCO in the ResiliArt Talk, Muna Al-Bader is truly a woman of many talents. Her detail-intensive paintings and astounding art pieces have become nationally and regionally recognized for brilliantly adopting varying shades of blue in a contemporary way. Her paintings have been shown at many solo exhibitions in Qatar, including the Dan Danah Exhibition, the youth creative art center, and the Arab youth forum. As a leading inspiration for many Arab and Qatari women, Muna Al-Bader has granted Dunes Magazine an in-depth interview, where she speaks about her artworks and deep connection with all hues of blue. She also reveals more secrets about her first painting and the one person who inspired her the most.

I created my first painting when I was seven years old Q. How did you discover your passion for painting, and what was your first experience? My passion and affection for arts started very young, specifically in my art classes at school. However, after graduating from high school and becoming employed, I found that I had a lot of free time that I wanted to invest in a good way. With that in mind, I decided to enroll in an art class where I received so much praise from others for my works and discovered that in fact I had some hidden talent! Q.What was your first painting, and at what age? I created my first painting when I was seven years old. It was mainly about baking pieces of bread in an old-fashioned way. Q.What or who inspires you the most? I always take my inspiration from my surrounding environment, traditions, and folk celebrations. My father has always been my biggest inspiration in life. Growing up, my father taught me many valuable lessons. I used to listen to his stories as he lived on the east side of Doha, where the Qatar national museum is now located. This area used to be called Fereij Sharq.

Picasso’s life was very inspirational for me. He was an artistic legend

Q.Do you agree or disagree with the statement: Art is a talent and not a skill to be taught? I disagree with that. Every child is an artist. However, by developing this God-given talent, the child can learn how to paint and draw. I believe if the talent is there, it will add additional creativity to your canvas, but it doesn’t matter if it isn’t there. We are only human, so we can learn anything in life as long as the passion is there. Q.What are your ambitions in life? There is no limit to my ambition. I always set goals and work hard to achieve them. When I finish one goal, I set another, especially in the fields of education and art. My mission is to deliver a message: to portray the beauty of our heritage through art so that others will know more about our culture. Art is a universal language, albeit visual, understood by all nations and cultures. I have worked so hard to get a good education. I started it all with a diploma, then ended up with a master’s degree, and now I am doing my Ph.D. Q. Name three of your favorite paintings. Yamal 1, Yamal 2, and Jrahan are my favorites. These three paintings were the first pieces painted during my blue color era. Through these paintings, I have reflected on 10 years of my art experience. Q. If you could bring one painter back to life, whom would you choose and why? I would choose Picasso. He is an artistic legend. His life was very inspirational for me. He was just an ordinary painter when he was alive, but after his death, people started to recognize him and his paintings. His paintings are now worth millions of dollars. I have carefully studied his paintings and understand how he reflected his feelings and emotions through art. Q. Which country would you choose as a destination for art lovers and why? I would choose the USA and UK due to the huge number of art galleries and museums there. I have traveled to these countries many times, just to visit their art museums and attend some art events. In fact, I learn a lot from other artists’ experiences in different countries around the world. Q. Why the color blue, and what does it mean to you? The color blue has always been associated with nature. Wars erupted because of our ancestors’ need to be near nature. Nevertheless, the word “blue” has never been mentioned across the ages, despite its critical importance. Decades ago, our grandparents used to be exposed to the clear skies and blue sea. They had remarkable survival skills, perhaps due to the presence of the “blue” in their lives. I believe there is a link between the color blue and human emotions, happiness, and sadness. Whenever I see them on gestures or postures of the human movement spectrum, I reflect them in my paintings. Overall, the color blue represents harmony, happiness, and vivacity.

INTERVIEW

Young artists need to learn, and try everything in order to have their own unique style of art Q. When did you become an art ambassador, and what is the benefit of this role? Since 2018, I have been actively working as Qatar’s art ambassador to UNESCO in the ResiliArt Talk. This selection came as a result of achieving many milestones in the field, not only on a personal level, but also for other artists through running different artrelated events and discovering new artists. This role has given me more responsibilities toward other artists, and also toward my country. Q. How do you balance work and art? Good time management helps me balance work and art. In the morning, I have a regular job, and in the evening I do my art thing. I achieve this balance by prioritizing my tasks based on their deadline and importance.

Q. Where do you see art in the state of Qatar? Qatar has been well recognized internationally in the art sector, especially thanks to the personal attention of Her Excellency Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani. She is well known in the art world, locally and across the globe. Nowadays, it’s very hard to walk around Doha without seeing a piece of public art. Similarly, the governmental buildings are full of paintings. Q. What would be the one piece of advice you can give to talented young painters? I always say to young artists that they need to learn, and try everything in order to have their own unique style of art. This won’t come without trials and failures, though!

DANA ALFARDAN QATARI CONTEMPORARY COMPOSER AND BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR QATAR PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (QPO), WILL LAUNCH HER FOURTH ALBUM, INDIGO, THROUGH A ONE-OF-A-KIND MULTI-SENSORY EXPERIENCE.

P

rominent Qatari composer Dana Al Fardan steps into her renowned role as Brand Ambassador, and joins forces with the internationally-reputed Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) once more, for a multi-sensory showcase of her new album INDIGO, set to reimagine and awaken all of your senses.

Dana has composed 10 new pieces of music for her much-anticipated fourth album, which is aptly-dubbed INDIGO. She introduces the masterpiece to audiences (release date to be confirmed) through a collaborative journey called Crystalline that plays on the power of the naked eye and one’s own consciousness, in a bid to elevate viewers towards their higher self. Using the spectrum of light, colour, and sound, a chamber orchestra of six musicians will perform INDIGO whilst audiences are drawn into a serene space for a show that evokes and pushes human senses to their limits. Breaking the rules of “selective absorption”, INDIGO works to connect the audience to their extra spectral senses and encourages them to captivate, expand, and amalgamate with their surroundings and within themselves, on a much deeper level. QPO Brand Ambassador and contemporary composer, Dana Al Fardan, says: “Each piece was composed in a colour scheme to capture a mood and a state of being.” Taking inspiration from the prismatic Theory of Colours by German poet, artist, and politician, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and the opponent process theory of German physiologist Ewald Hering, INDIGO’s showcase through Crystalline will be the firstof-its-kind live experience for audiences in Qatar. Dana’s own refined flair for embracing concept and creativity sparked the invention of INDIGO, which is music that demands sensory attention. Searching deep within the ideas of colour theories and light, she has produced works that comprise of sophisticated, other-worldly compositions. Take Chromium – a piece that heartens depth and principles. “Chromium is a chemical trace element responsible for creating ruby’s colour upon mixing with the stone corundum,” Dana explains. “I chose Chromium to represent Red because of its role in shaping its surroundings. Red is the only light wave that is unbent; therefore, it is the impulse in you that is unrelenting.” The objective of the INDIGO showcase is simple; to see and feel what humans otherwise cannot or do not. The manipulation of light and colour, with the meeting of sound, has the power to completely reconstruct how one experiences their proximity and everything within it. Imagine a live experience where every one of your senses is woken at every turn; INDIGO does this with an intelligent combination of colours and sounds within melodic arrangements and progressions that symbolise this journey as a heightened expression of Dana’s innovative talent.

Each piece was composed in a colour scheme to capture a mood and a state of being

Talking of another piece titled Glacier, Dana shares: “This is a moment that is frozen in the present. In this space the only thing that matters is the here and now.” “This is the eternal oneness with any experience that transcends time and space,” she says. The thought-process and originality dedicated to INDIGO has been the work of a true virtuoso. Dana’s commitment to producing an album that goes above and beyond the realms of here and now, is a testament to her forward-thinking ingenuity and passion for composing music that stirs the listener’s soul. With INDIGO, Dana has been able to show that humans have the ability to create the story that they want to see unfold. 2021 remains to be a year filled with exciting projects for Dana who is currently working on her second musical with Nadim; titled Rumi, it is set to be recorded in Doha in February by the QPO musicians, and planned to be staged in the West End at a later date. She is also collaborating as part of the Qatar-USA Year of Culture 2021, through her song, Rising, with the United States Air Forces Central Command Band (AFCENT Band) to achieve their shared drive to promote inclusion and connectivity. Rising is now available to download on Spotify and audiences can get a closer insight into the making of this collaboration with a behind the scenes video on YouTube (follow this link to watch the video: https://youtu.be/LnRquflm4ls/). Also, in the pipelines is a special coming together of talents as Dana is taking her gift for music to the big screen. She is working on a composition for a film called Orca, a drama based on a true story, which is being produced by Katara Studios, and directed by Sahar Mossayebi, with Taraneh Alidoosti as the lead actress. In addition, Dana’s last album, Sandstorm which was performed in Doha by the QPO and available to view on Qatar Airways flights, will be coming out on DVD and streaming platforms very soon. After her success with Qatari percussion and a classic orchestra who performed her outstanding fusion single Fjiri, Dana is currently preparing a full-scale symphonic show which will combine traditional Qatari instruments and singing with her unique brand of classic music. Parallel to Fjiri, which is a traditional form of music known for its significance to the sea, with a meaningful connection to the celebrated pearl diving trade, Dana continues to wow music aficionados with her appetite for exploration and desire to compose music that resonates with audiences everywhere.

RICHARD MILLE TECHNIQUE & INNOVATION AT THE HEART OF THE NEW RM 65-01 A highly complex sports timepiece, a masterpiece of technical prowess designed for everyday use and for any situation, such is the latest execution of Richard Mille’s tireless quest for innovation, the new RM 65-01. The culmination of some five years of development, this automatic split-seconds chronograph is the most complex timepiece ever to leave the Richard Mille workshops. With production beyond the limited edition, it demonstrates true watchmaking greatness. This model fully embodies the brand’s technical approach thanks to the combination of several additional functions, a very specific architecture and an extremely high-end aesthetic. All in all, a fabulous challenge of mechanical watchmaking that called for patience, technicity and utter perseverance. This chronograph honed for the 21st century has a high frequency balance with variable inertia—5 Hz, or 36,000 vibrations per hour— developed for superior timekeeping accuracy over an extended period and precise stopwatch calculations to 1/10th of a second. It is every bit a genuine racing machine with a split-second hand to calculate intermediate times, a first for Richard Mille on an automatic movement. Developed in partnership with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, the integrated movement boasts unfailing consistency with its 6-column wheel architecture and vertical coupling. Like a mechanical brain, this castellated piece orchestrates the controls and can be seen through the base. A mechanical cathedral—standing on a grade 5 titanium chassis supported by grade 5 titanium bridges—it receives its energy from a fast-rotating barrel that maintains ideal torque for energy transmission for the full duration of its 60-hour power reserve. The barrel’s automatic winding also ensures the watch sustains optimal torque whilst worn on the wrist. This is further enhanced by the variable geometry of the calibre’s oscillating weight segment, which makes it possible to change the rotor’s inertia for improved winding yield depending on the more or less active profile of the person bearing the watch. The chronograph was also subjected to a battery of merciless tests to demonstrate its capacity to function under any circumstances. These included everything from shock and drop simulations to accelerated 10-year ageing phases for all functions, by way of waterproof tests and magnetic field resistance trials.

24

WATC H E S & J E W E L L E RY

WATC H E S & J E W E L L E RY

25

But the Richard Mille teams did not stop there. No indeed, to this powerful, solid and infallible racing engine, mounted on a Carbon TPT® case as resistant as it is light, they added complications to boost the model’s ergonomics. In another milestone, Richard Mille developed its first in-house patented rapid-winding mechanism, activated by a pusher at 8 o’clock. In 125 presses, the barrel is fully wound, ready to time your next event. This highly practical function, described as ‘very playful’ by Richard Mille’s engineers, was particularly difficult to develop because of its high levels of torque transfer. During the ageing tests, the function was activated thousands of times. The model was also enhanced with a new gearbox, taking the form of a function selector housed in the crown. This system makes it possible to switch between ‘traditional’ winding (W), semiinstantaneous date adjustment (D) or setting the time (H), all done simply by pressing the crown. For a supremely legible dial, the RM 65-01 uses colour-coding to match watch functions with the pushers. Yellow is for time: hours, minutes, small seconds at 6 o’clock, whereas green refers to the date display. Orange identifies the chronograph’s sweep seconds hand as well as the 30-minute and 12-hour totalisers. Red is linked to the winding mechanism. To avoid all confusion, the splitseconds hand is blue. Here, function is what drives the aesthetical choices. As for the case, its every surface boasts extremely elegant detailing. Sporting a Carbon TPT® bezel, caseband and caseback, it has a microblasted, polished and satin-finished grade 5 titanium crown, framed by the chronograph buttons, also in polished and satin-finished grade 5 titanium. The same material and finish are used for the plate engraved with RM 65-01 on the caseband. The rapid-winding pusher stands out with its red Quartz TPT® button. Available in Carbon TPT®, Gold and Carbon TPT®, the RM 65-01 has over 600 components, further evidence of the immense technical expertise of the development teams. Embracing the brand’s ancestral codes whilst affirming its own identity, the RM 65-01 is set to take its place in the gallery of illustrious Richard Mille models with technicity at its heart.

Égérie self-winding, entirely attired in gold Enter the world of “Haute Manufacture” Vacheron Constantin’s watchmaking muse appears in a stunning new variation gracing the wrist with a supple new bracelet in 18K 5N pink gold. Thus attired, this self-winding Égérie model – an ideal companion for both daytime and evening wear – exudes a seductively precious allure. A bracelet as smooth as a second skin The Vacheron Constantin ladies’ collection revealed at the beginning of the year has continued to flourish with a new variation of the Égérie self-winding model. Boldly contemporary and delightfully classic, it now pairs its exquisite curves with an 18K 5N pink gold bracelet. Delightfully supple and soft as a second skin, feeling like leather on skin, its links the feminine wrist with infinite elegance, making one almost forget it is even there. Draped entirely in gold, this watch presents a seductive composition, capturing the spirit of the times and perfectly suited to all outfits and every occasion, ranging from supercasual to ultra-formal. A very stylish look Inspired by the world of haute couture and the aesthetic sophistication inherited from Vacheron Constantin’s heritage, the Égérie self-winding watch celebrates the collection’s unique style. Flowing seamlessly into a new 18K 5N pink gold bracelet, its case is a dainty 35 mm 18K 5N pink gold pebble rimmed with 58 diamonds. Its silvered opaline dial features a “pleats” pattern created using the time-honoured tapestry technique. Using a machine dating from 1904 and resembling a pantograph, it is finely engraved thanks to the expertly applied touch of the guillocheur, revealing a subtle play of textures and depth evoking a precious fabric. It is against this backdrop that time performs its fascinating choreography, punctuated by leaf-type hands sweeping across gracefully scripted numerals recalling finely scalloped lace embroidery. Setting a final distinctive touch, the beautifully rounded diamond-set date display is offset along a diagonal line running between Vacheron Constantin’s signature and the crown, perkily adorned with a moonstone. This asymmetry enhances the personality of this extremely chic watch with an audacious contemporary twist. Through its sapphire caseback, the Égérie self-winding model reveals the hand-crafted Côtes de Genève fine watchmaking finishes and delicately openworked oscillating weight – inspired by the shape of the Maltese Cross – equipping the Manufacture self-winding 1088 calibre. Ten of these watches will be available exclusively on Net-à-Porter as of November 2020, one month before the models arrive in Vacheron Constantin points of sale worldwide.

BOUCHERON

A HISTORY OF STYLE, ART DÉCO 2021 High Jewelry Collection « A History of Style » are High Jewelry collections finding their inspiration in the archives of Maison Boucheron and reviving them through Claire Choisne’s creative eye. They offer timeless creations, as a signature style. This year, creative director Claire Choisne delved into Maison Boucheron’s abundant Art deco archives. She extracted the spirit, the line, the radical simplicity of a time when the Parisienne asserted her femininity by wearing masculine clothes, plunging necklines, high-waisted pants, long necklaces and short hair. A time of extravagance, where style was all about attitude. As a perfect echo to modern-day women and men, Claire Choisne has chosen to magnify the couture spirit and the antagonisms of the Roaring Twenties, focusing on feminine and masculine, the opulence of pure lines, the contrast of black and white enhanced by a touch of color. Boucheron’s jewelry making savoir-faire applied to Art Deco flapper necklaces and ribbon bracelets results in utterly contemporary multiwear pieces. More than a high jewelry collection for women and for men, “A History of Style, Art Déco” is a declaration of freedom and style.

HOW THE MOST FAMOUS ENGAGEMENT RING IN THE WORLD INSPIRED

GARRARD’S MUCH-LOVED 1735 COLLECTION

G

arrard has a long and distinguished history of crafting exceptional jewels for royalty. Some of the House’s most regal creations, for example the setting of the Cullinan I, the world’s largest cut and

colourless diamond, in the Sovereign’s Sceptre, are legendary, while others are true icons of their time, namely Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond cluster engagement ring. Among the most famous royal jewels ever crafted by the House, the enduring influence of the cluster-style design continues to inspire jewels at Garrard today. Throughout its history, Garrard has worked closely with the British royal family, and royalty around the world. Its first royal commission came from Frederick, Prince of Wales in its founding year, sparking a long and fruitful relationship with British royalty that reached its apogee in 1843, when Queen Victoria appointed Garrard as the first official Crown Jeweller. The House has served every British monarch since. Among the many pieces of royal regalia created by Garrard is Queen Mary’s consort crown. Set with more than 2,000 brilliant cut and rose cut diamonds, today it is on display as part of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. Another is the stunning sapphire and diamond cluster brooch given to Queen Victoria by her husband Albert on the eve of their wedding, which the monarch wore the next day, pinned to her dress, as her “something blue”. Diana chose her sapphire engagement ring from Garrard in 1981. Encircled by a halo of diamonds set in 18 carat white gold, the deep, intense blue colour of the 12-carat oval blue sapphire, discovered in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, was magnificent, enhanced by its exceptional lustre. Displaying the exquisite taste for which she became so famous during her life as a royal, within just a few days, Diana’s ring would be known the world over. “It’s a wonderful jewel,” says Sara Prentice, Creative Director at Garrard. “The sapphire is astonishingly beautiful, and the proportions of the ring and the size of the diamonds work very well together.”

Queen Victoria’s obsession with beautiful jewellery saw an explosion of jewels during her reign featuring the cluster setting, the most famous of which was the monarch’s beloved sapphire and diamond brooch. In the years following the royal engagement, Diana’s Garrard jewel sparked a great love affair with sapphire cluster engagement rings among future brides that continues to this day. The cluster setting, which is prominently showcased in Garrard’s 1735 and 1735 Double Cluster jewellery collections, soon became synonymous with the House. Interpreting Diana’s engagement ring in sapphires, alongside rubies, emeralds and aquamarines, the collections include precious pendants and earrings and an enchanting collection of engagement rings, with each jewel starring a beautiful oval or round centre stone framed by a radiant single or double halo of round diamonds. “The cluster of diamonds around the edge amplifies the vibrant hue of the coloured stones,” says Prentice. “All of our designs at Garrard are rooted in our heritage, and we continue to capture the elegant classicism of Princess Diana’s engagement ring in our 1735 jewels.” Echoing its timeless silhouette, the House’s collection of engagement rings includes 1735 and 1735 Double Cluster designs that remain among the most popular ways of commemorating love at Garrard. “We are always focused on the little details, so the collection has been refined over the years to suit contemporary tastes,” says Prentice. “We’ve cleverly raised the centre very slightly so a wedding band can fit underneath and sit flush against a 1735 engagement ring.” A new chapter in the history of Princess Diana’s engagement ring was written when, in 2010, Prince William chose to propose to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge with the same Garrard engagement ring that his father had given to William’s mother, Diana. As this royal jewel, passed down through generations, takes on new meaning and sentiment upon Catherine’s hand, Garrard continues to honour this iconic ring, one of its most historically significant designs, in the 1735 and 1735 Double Cluster collections.

BALLY AUTUMN/WINTER 2021

Autumn /Winter 2021 pays tribute to Bally’s remarkable 170 - year heritage of excellence in design and leather craftsmanship, which first began in Switzerland in 1851. Through a multitude of inspirations from modern art, architecture and the environment, the new season collection explores the consistent and continuous techniques that have come to define Bally for generations, fusing modern utility with unexpected layering. What results is a timeless yet timely range of functional sartorial styles for today’s world. House icons are further reinterpreted, like the Bally Stripe, streamlined through a raised bombé technique, while the 1851 symmetrical hardware graces across footwear and accessories. A celebratory monogram, created especially for the anniversary by Offshore, a Swiss graphic studio, features the signature B-Chain interlocked ad infinitum, purposefully resembling shoelaces as a creative nod to Bally’s founding as a shoemaker.

The designs also stay true to the brand’s mountain heritage, expressed through its support of early expeditions around the world, from the Himalayas to the Andes of Peru. Two particular climbing expeditions to the Cordillera, led by France’s Lionel Terray and Switzerland’s Raymond Lambert in 1956 and 1957, respectively, inspired consummate hiking boots with a recreated take on the Grip sole, produced by Bally since the 1940’s. A nouveau Bally red evokes the rich and variegated landscape of Rainbow Mountain in Peru and Laguna Colorada in Bolivia. From the Swiss Alps, native forget -me - nots get abstracted into graphic, cellular prints, as a warm, earthy color palette features bone, ebony and deep moss. Integrating the city and the outdoors, raw forms are contoured and shaped with a contemporary take on tailoring, while reconstituted leathers morph into beguiling silhouettes; natural dyes meet alpaca yarns, making each piece singular and unique. An homage to Bally’s legacy in the making, A /W 2021 is an innovative continuum of Swiss craft, culture and design honoring past, present and future codes.

A BETTER FUTURE Legacy Continua draws out Bally’s artisanal processes at their most sublime with relevance and care. As a committed signatory of the Fashion Pact, Bally is dedicated to mitigating its environmental impact as a fashion brand, and the A/W 2021 collection takes important steps to integrate Bally’s Sustainability mandate, from sourcing 100% recycled materials to introducing natural, eco - friendly dyes.

CASA JOHARA Luxury Fashion Designed For An Authentic Future

Casa Johara is a unique, luxury, ready-to-wear fashion label launched in January 2020 by Qatari-Mexican designer, Johara Al- Suwaidi. To celebrate the launch of her new collection, La Colección Insijam, Ms. Al-Suwaidi graciously agreed to take some time to answer a few questions about her business and the inspiration behind it.

Q, Tell us about your role in the creation of the Casa Johara, or ’Casa J’, label and what in-spired it. I am the founder and Creative Director of this local Qatari fashion label – so I conceptualize and create each of our unique designs for every collection. My ultimate inspiration for creating Casa Johara came, of course, from my love for all things art and design, but also from my personal mantra and ultimate goal, ‘dare to be you.’ I always strive to live authentically, and I wanted to build something that would empower people to be and to love themselves as they are. Q. What are the messages behind this fashion line? Fashion for a purpose, enhancing family bonds, and empowering one another – these are all things I believe strongly in and want my label to stand for. I will be honest that it has taken cour-age to bring myself on this journey and my hope is to be able to inspire and support others to pursue their own passions and growth. I want my work to help pave the way for men and women to create a truly authentic society, adapting and evolving social norms to meet the challenges and needs of today’s new era. But, Casa Johara is also an extension of my desire to be able to connect to the world on a larger scale – to promote and implement what I truly believe could make a positive impact on the world – through my love for art and design. Two ways my business strives to make a positive impact is through practicing zero waste and recycling as much possible and by implementing cruelty-free business practices by not using animal products. Q. In terms of the big picture, how does Casa Johara impact and implement your vision for the future? My goals are all about connection, to the earth and to each other. I love being able to create op-portunities for fun family bonds through fashion by providing beautiful, luxurious designs for children and adults alike. And, of course, as a female entrepreneur, I believe strongly that a truly authentic, equitable future depends on individuals and society empowering women regardless of ethnic backgrounds. By building this company, I hope to serve as an example of what women can create in this world, hopefully inspiring other women to reach for their goals as well.

62

FAS H I O N

Q. Tell us about your new collection for 2021. The mantra of this collection is “Empowering One Woman At A Time”, so La Colección Insijam consists of 6 designs for women and 6 for little girls. Like all my collections, this line includes unique hand-made details so each piece is truly one of a kind. I focused on incorporating silhou-ettes that complement the female figure without sacrificing comfort, providing women with a sensible and sensual “everyday couture” option. Consisting of Kaftans, Sirwal Jumpsuits, and Sportive Jumpsuits, this collection is built on the concept of ‘twinning’ designs, made for a fun ‘Mommy and Me’ (or ‘Big Sister or Aunty and Me’) fashion experience. But I also strove to make the designs simple and accessible enough that any woman of any cultural background could enjoy these comfortable, classic pieces. This col-lection is fun yet luxurious, and supports green and cruelty-free initiatives so every woman can feel confident inside and out. As for the themes behind my designs, nature has always been a great inspiration throughout all my travels. The moon, the sun, and the ocean were the primary motifs of the collection. I incor-porated my Qatari-Mexican background and used it as a lens through which to reinterpret these archetypal elements in a modern context. The color palette is inspired by Qatar’s undiscovered nature. The sunset, the moon, and the ocean. Q. How did you come up with the name for this collection? What does it mean to you? The words ‘La Colección’ are Spanish for ‘The Collection,’ and the Arabic word, ‘Insijam’ means ‘Harmony.’ To embody the concept of ‘Insijam’ has always been my aim in approaching life. My goal was for this collection to reflect the perfect ‘Insijam’ of myself and my culture. Combining the grace and beauty of my natural surroundings here in Qatar, the love and im-portance of familial bonds, and the honor and responsibility we all have to our environment and society. Together, these things reflect my ideal ‘Insijam’ or harmonious life.

BEST WAYS TO

DETOX NATURALLY by Noura Al Thani

Detox has become a seriously watered-down term because of the many over-hyped products that are peddled in its name–from juice cleanses to infomercial foot pads. The truth is, your body is set up to take care of the process on its own via a variety of systems, but there are a handful of ways you can pitch in to help it perform.

DRINK WATER

EPSOM SALT BATH

Water carries nutrients to our cells, aids digestion by forming stomach secretions, flushes our bodies of wastes, and keeps our kidneys healthy.

The two main ingredients of Epsom salt are magnesium and sulfate. It is believed the combination of both ingredients stimulates detoxification pathways.

It keeps our moisture-rich organs (our skin, eyes, mouth, and nose) functioning well, it lubricates and cushions our joints, and it regulates our body temperature and our metabolism, just to name a few of its many functions.

Magnesium is a natural substance that aids a variety of bodily functions, including the removal of toxins. Sulfate can strengthen the walls of the digestive tract and make releasing toxins easier.

Water also plays a crucial role in disease prevention. In a study conducted at the Centre for Human Nutrition at the University of Sheffield, England, researchers concluded that women who stay adequately hydrated reduce their risk of breast cancer by 79 percent. SWEATING Sweat is the most important elimination route for toxins. Everyone, in today’s society, is exposed to toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Although it is a major eliminative organ, most people’s skin is very inactive. Repeated use of the sauna can help slowly restore the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Released toxins are then eliminated from the body by perspiration and through the intestinal tract. Sauna detoxification is thought to lead to the removal of fat-soluble chemicals from the body by encouraging their elimination through sebaceous glands (microscopic glands in the skin that secrete an oily/waxy material) and sweat glands. DRY BRUSHING A loofah or soft brush can be used on a daily basis, to help remove dead skin cells, which can block pores and slow the release of toxins through the skin. The dry brush should be used on extremities, starting at the farthest points and working toward the trunk of the body. Dead skin cells that are removed allow new, healthy skin to do its job more efficiently.

PROBIOTICS Researchers are discovering that good bacteria affect our gut flora and even determines our mood. Overall, the bacteria promote the health of our immune system and digestive system. In modern times, it is much more difficult to maintain the proper amount of gut flora because of all the toxins, medications, and chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Things like antibiotics, food preservatives, pesticides, and chlorinated water and all destroy these good bacteria. Even people suffering from chronic stress will have an imbalance of good bacteria. Once this happens, it paves the way for bad bacteria to take its place. These bad bacteria include parasites, yeast, and fungus.

DEEP BREATHING How to Breathe deeply to Detox the Body: the human body can go months without food, and days without water. However, we can only survive a few minutes without oxygen. There are many benefits to deep conscious breathing and detoxing the body is one of them. OXYGEN HELPS THE BODY ABSORB VITAMINS, NUTRIENTS, AND MINERALS MORE EFFICIENTLY.

It also promotes the creation of white blood cells. Every time you inhale your lungs fill with oxygen that thereafter get transported in your blood throughout other detoxing organs including: lymphatic system, kidneys, colon, and even the uterus for women. Conversely every time we exhale we eliminate part of the body’s waste in the form of carbon dioxide. By breathing deeply we take in more oxygen that cleanses the body, and by exhaling deeply we eliminate more waste both actions have an overall detox effect on the body. HYDROTHERAPY Hot water has relaxing properties, helping to reduce stress. Cold water helps relieve inflammation and stimulates the removal of toxins from elimination organs like the skin and lymph. Hydrotherapy is a time-honored technique that uses these properties of water such as temperature and pressure to stimulate healing and cleanse toxins. There are many different types of hydrotherapies, including saunas, colonics, and simple hot and cold showers.

How do Hot and Cold Showers Work? When the body is heated by hot water, the blood will move in greater volume to the surface of the body, the skin. This is an attempt by the body to release heat more readily to ensure an even temperature is maintained within the body’s vital organs. When the body is cooled by the cold water, the blood will move in greater volume to the inner body. This is an attempt by the body to keep the inner vital organs warm and ensure that a balanced temperature is maintained at all times. So we can see by simply warming and cooling the body alternately, we are making the circulation move in and out like an accordion. And when the blood moves like this, the lymph is encouraged to move with it along parallel vessels, thus releasing stagnation and toxic build-up.

66

H E A LT H & F I T N E SS

OXYGEN HELPS THE BODY ABSORB VITAMINS, NUTRIENTS, AND MINERALS MORE EFFICIENTLY TAKE VITAMIN C Vitamin C is anti-inflammatory, helps increase our blood’s white count by strengthening our neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and macrophages; and generally boosts the immune system against viruses, bacteria, yeast, mold, and other unwanted fungus. This makes getting an adequate amount of vitamin C essential if you are battling a chronic illness or symptom. The right kind of vitamin C also helps to cleanse the liver, blood and lymph, strengthen the adrenal glands, repair damaged neurotransmitters, and restore the central nervous system. It also helps the body to detox effectively, which is a challenge many chronically ill people face until they get the right detoxsupporting nutrients. Vitamin C also strengthens all levels of the liver’s personalized immune system. The liver uses vitamin C in all of its over 2,000 chemical functions. It not only detoxifies and cleanses the liver; it can also stop a sluggish liver, loosen and disperse fat cells stored inside the liver, and help the liver recover after bouts of stress-related adrenaline surges. Vitamin C can also help stop and repair scar tissue deep in the liver’s core. It can also help with nodules, tumors, and cysts.

What is self-assessment

Self-assessment structure

Self-assessment is the way we perceive our personality, activities, successes or failures, positive or negative features and feelings, position in the society and the world. One’s perception is formed when comparing himself to the others. Self-assessment is always based on values having a certain social significance here and now. Self-assessment can change under the influence of circumstances or a purposeful work provided by a person himself, although it does not depend on the momentary attitude to oneself and specific actions performed.

Two main components can be distinguished In the structure of self-assessment: the cognitive and the emotional one: The cognitive component (coming from the Latin word “cognition” - knowledge) is what a person knows about himself, about what weaknesses or strengths he possesses, what he knows how to do well and what he can never do. The distorted self-assessment appears when a person does not fully understand what to expect from himself.

Types and levels of self-assessment The level of self-assessment makes a direct influence on the behavior and actions of a man, his relationship with relatives and the rest of the society. His self-criticism, self-demanding, thoughtful attitude to life victories and defeats are formed. Psychologists usually distinguish types of self-assessment: an adequate and a distorted one.

Factors affecting the formation of self-assessment

An adequate self-assessment reflects the real abilities and qualities of the individual. In other words, their objective assessment takes place.

The foundations of self-assessment are formed in childhood under the parents’ and adults’ influence. Those are the so-called social factors:

A distorted self-assessment may be both overestimated and underestimated. People possessing a high self-assessment really want to seem better than others, but in fact, a fear of failure hides deep inside of them. People with an underestimated selfassessment demonstrate to others their vulnerability based on existing complexes.

• Too many comments or praise • Constant comparison with other children or, worse, adults • Understatement or exaggeration of achievements Even in adulthood, a person is influenced by the socially significant people’s opinions. However, individual characteristics of a person are also more important: the way he perceives reality, criticism or compliments, how his psychological state is adequate in general, and what kind of person has formed his temperament. Those all are personal factors. There is such a concept as the level of claims.

In any case, a distorted self-assessment harms the person himself greatly and prevents him from communicating with others, solving problems without getting involved into unnecessary conflicts and achieving success. Very often, due to problems with selfassessment, a person behaves inappropriately.

68

The emotional component is a person’s attitude to himself and how he manages to show his personality to others. People experience the whole palette of emotions in relation to themselves and it may be difficult to understand and accept them. Of course, the fact a person knows about himself is always emotionally colored for the reason he has been experiencing emotions all the way when gaining experience and knowledge.

H E A LT H & F I T N E SS

In order to change your self-assessment, you need to learn to notice all the good things taking place in your life As well as self-assessment, the level of claims can be adequate and completely corresponding to the capabilities, including psychological, of a person, or it may also appear to be a distorted one. The level of claims, our life goals and the ways in which they are achieved, greatly affect self-assessment. In this case, it is better to overstate the level of claims than have a reduced one. It is difficult to talk about any adequate self-assessment of a person having no goals. Self-assessment correction Self-assessment is quite amenable to correction, however, if a person’s self-assessment is lowered, he knows it well. With an increased self-assessment, this does not happen often. The person believes that he assesses himself quite adequately and does not want to change, without considering this as a necessity. It also happens that a self-assessment drops sharply after painful incidents or losses, but such a path can hardly be called suitable. If a person realizes that he has got an overestimated selfassessment, then he would be able to look at himself critically, this is already a worthy start. How to increase self-assessment: • Do not compare yourself to anyone else. You are yourself. Your achievements are yours only, and you can be proud of them. • Do not allow negative thoughts • Thank the world for what you have already got • Focus on success in any business, even on the most modest one • Write down all your positive qualities and successes and add this list more often • Demonstrate your success to others • Stop criticizing yourself • Never make excuses, but know how to admit a mistake • Be realistic in expectations, but do not diminish your dignity • Treat errors as lessons • Learn to Speak - No • Make friends with your inner critic In order to change your self-assessment, you need to learn to notice all the good things taking place in your life. Note that you are also succeeding in what is not quite coming out. Learn, develop, encourage yourself for success, and never act to the detriment of yourself, because such tactics do not bring worthy results. Accept yourself as you are, learn to talk about your merits and shortcomings honestly at least to yourself, only then your self-assessment will become stable and healthy. H E A LT H & F I T N E SS

If you asked most of us to use one word that describes how we’d like our skin to look, we assume that ‘glowing’ would be pretty high up the list. But that flawless, luminous and healthy looking skin is only God-given for a very few people. The rest of us are going to need to invest a bit of time, love and patience. How to get glowing skin: your 37 step manual

1. Make sure you apply SPF daily We know, we know – you’ve heard it a million times, but wearing SPF is the best way to prolong healthy, glowing skin. When it comes to how to get flawless skin, know that: 80% of wrinkles are from sun exposure. It’s so much easier to prevent the damage than it is to fix it afterwards. That means no skipping this routine during winter months either. Whats more, don’t forget to apply when you’re in the the office or the car, as cell-damaging UVA rays can penetrate glass too. Look for a formula that offers broad-spectrum protection to guard against UVA rays (the ones that cause premature ageing) and UVB rays (one of the main causes of skin cancer). 2. Use hyaluronic acid Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of your skin that keeps it hydrated and soft. With age, or due to a harsh environment, the hyaluronic acid content in your skin may decrease, and your skin may lose some of its elasticity and hydration. Use a moisturiser or serum that is rich in hyaluronic acid. This heavy-hitting hydrator can hold up to 100x its own weight in water, meaning it’ll draw water into every layer of the skin and hold it there. Expert Tip: Visit your dermatologist office and book a Skinbooster session. During this treatment micro droplets of hyaluronic acid will be injected in different layers of the skin; you will get a refreshed and radiant look that lasts around 6 months.

3. Invest in skincare with antioxidants For years, health and skin care companies have been searching for the “fountain of youth” and it looks like we have come close to a solution, all thanks to antioxidants. Environmental factors like radiation from the sun, pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and other toxic chemicals are also known to trigger the formation of free radicals. Antioxidants protect the skin by limiting free radical production, which can damage the skin. With daily use, they can reduce lentigines (sun spots), help combat visible signs of aging and calm skin inflammations. Several antioxidants provide the skin with hydration and increase moisture retention to help revitalize dull-looking skin. A great place to start with are Vitamin C-packed serums, that are more concentrated than creams, so you tend to only need a small amount daily to see results. They are also lighter and have the capability to absorb deeper into your skin. A favorite among dermatologists, vitamin C is one of the most studied antioxidants available on the market. Other than being a free radical inactivator, vitamin C has other skin benefits, like boosting collagen production and fading dark spots.

BEAUTY

But beware, vitamin C is inherently unstable and can lose its potency when exposed to light or air. It’s best to store it in a cool, dark drawer or cabinet. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, or THD, is a form of vitamin C that is inherently more stable, and it’s lipid soluble, which means that it can better penetrate into the deeper levels of the skin to stimulate collagen production. Some prefer this formulation, which tends to be a bit velvety and creamy rather than serum-like. Other forms of vitamin C include L-ascorbic and ester-C.

Starting in our 20s, we begin losing about 1% of our collagen each year

Expert Tip? Look for serums that contain antioxidants like vitamin C, phloretin, ferulic acid, resveratrol, niacinamide or polyphenols. Are you aiming for that “ red-carpet glowing skin “? The dermatologist can help you with one of the best treatments: antioxidants mesotherapy. The magic cocktails containing high concentrated antioxidants, hyaluronic acid and different vitamins will be used during the session, making your skin more luminous by rejuvenating and tightening it.

6. Use an exfoliator to reduce appearance of pores It’s amazing how something so tiny can feel so huge, but enlarged pores are one of the most common beauty complaints. Pores appear larger when they’re filled with dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and keratin, a protein that lives on the surface of skin. Remove those plugs, and they seem to shrink. To clear out pores, two-to-three times a week reach for a cleanser, or exfoliator, that contains an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid, or AHA. These skin-friendly acids work to chemically exfoliate dead skin cells and dissolve dirt lurking deep within pores.

4. Have a face peel to rejuvenate your face If the thought of having a facial peel conjures images of red-raw skin and a terrifying recovery process, think again. Today’s peels should be considered a step up from at-home exfoliating products – perfect for the lead-up to a wedding or big event. Rejuvenating skin peels are one of my key secrets to maintaining beautifully glowing and clear skin all year round. Gone are the days of the very aggressive style peel where you will leave the clinic looking like your face has fallen off! We can now have rejuvenating peel treatments at regular intervals to achieve lasting results with minimal downtime. Expert Tip? I highly recommends superficial skin peels which use active compounds like alpha and polyhydroxy acids, lactic, caffeic or TCA. These peels exfoliate and smooth the skin’s surface and also stimulate collagen and skin matrix formation to create a strong and healthy skin structure. They can be modified to treat specific skin concerns, all Fitzpatrick types and all ages as well as being the perfect companion to complement other aesthetic medical procedures. 5. Use your skincare in the right order The sequence in which you apply your products could be even more important than the products themselves. Reach for your serums first, as they will contain the most active ingredients. These are the most powerful, so you want them to come into direct contact with your skin. If you’re using more than one active product (like an antioxidant serum and Retin-A), start with the thinner one. Anything that’s water soluble should go first, followed by the product that’s thicker and creamier. If you do it in reverse, the heavier cream will block the ingredients of the lighter one from penetrating the skin, so they won’t have any impact. If you need moisturiser, it’s next up in line, followed up by SPF.

Hello, glowing skin. Expert Tip? Once in a while pamper yourself and have a hydrafacial. This multi-step treatment uses a patented device to cleanse, exfoliate, and extract dead skin cells while bathing the skin in serums packed with rich hydrating ingredients, antioxidants, and peptides. 7. Add Collagen Supplements to your diet Collagen makes up to 80% of our skin, and works with another protein called elastin that — yes, you guessed it — keeps our skin elastic. But as we age, our bodies naturally start reducing collagen production. Starting in our 20s, we begin losing about 1% of our collagen each year. This, unfortunately, means drier, duller skin. Sun exposure, cigarette smoke and pollution can also accelerate collagen breakdown. A collagen supplement delivers various types of collagen protein when taken daily. Two types of supplements are gaining popularity — hydrolyzed collagen and gelatin. These have already broken the large protein down into smaller peptides, which are more easily absorbed in the body. There aren’t many studies on collagen supplements, but those that exist show an improved elasticity and hydration, while reducing the fine wrinkles and restoring the skin radiance. Expert Tip? If you want a true supplement that works for your skin, look for one that contains Type 1 Hydrolyzed Collagen (collagen peptides) with High Bio-availability. Make sure to pay attention to the concentration per serving (5,000 - 10,000mg) if you want to see visible result. For younger adults (<35) a lower daily concentration between 2,500mg - 5,000mg is typically sufficient.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It covers the entire surface of the body, protecting it against external pathogens. That’s why it is of paramount importance to take care of our skin; it requires careful attention to keep it functioning properly. We have to treat our skin gently and start a healthy skincare routine early. Shaikha AlMasnoori, founder and CEO of Smeraldo Beauty, shares her top three skincare tips and secrets for you to get clearer, healthier, glowing skin.

1. Commit to a skincare routine Think of a skincare routine as a high maintenance formula for perfect skin. Healthy daily habits will have a significant impact on the person you see in the mirror. Following a skincare routine might bring some mental health benefits and so benefit your body in general and not just your skin. Protecting your skin’s natural oils and using the right skincare products are two important things that will keep you healthy. 2. Choose the right skincare product that’s best suited to your skin! Before deciding what to include in your skincare routine, it’s really important to figure out your skin type. Because when it comes to skincare products, you have to carefully choose the right product that best suits your skin. It is also important to be aware that natural skincare products are not always better. There are five different skin types, including normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, and combination skin. Different skin types require products with different combinations of ingredients that are best suited to that particular skin type. So, it is important to use skincare products in light of our understanding of their ingredients and based on our own skin type.

THE KATARA SUITE Located on the third floor, the redesigned Katara Suite takes inspiration from Qatari history, since the year 150 AD, “Catara” was the first and most ancient name designated for the Qatar Peninsula in geographic and historical maps. The suite’s design reflects the movement of the sea and sand, where historically inhabitants used to dive for pearls in the Persian Gulf using boats called dhows.

THE IVORY SUITE The Ivory Suite, on the upper floor is inspired by the trade between Qatar with Europe when it was thriving during the 17th to 19th centuries with oysters that produced pearls of intense beauty. The creamy white colors used through-out the suite are accented in black and gold, providing a contemporary touch of European flair.

THE QUARTZ SUITE The design spirit of the Quartz Suite is inspired by the intensity of quartz that reflects throughout the suite. Providing a continuous soft glow to the space from dawn through dusk are subtle globe lights and walls that are accented with Italian gold. The color palette of the suite evokes earthy minerals such as translucent quartz and black onyx accented with metallic brass, bronze and silver tones.

THE COBALT SUITE Qatar’s unbridled passion for cars and motorsports inspired the aerodynamic, masculine look of the Cobalt Suite. The suite’s leather wall panels pay homage to luxury automobile interiors with cobalt blue from the curtains to the carpet, serving as a fitting tribute to race cars.

THE QATAR-AMERICA YEAR OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP

I

nternational cooperation and co-creation is the primary focus of the Qatar-America Year of Culture – and Dohabased American, Mari Pearce, has discovered first-hand how Qatar’s future-focused society can facilitate innovation. As the wife of a U.S. Diplomat, Mari is no stranger to the hurdles faced by entrepreneurs living overseas, but she says the benefits far outweigh the challenges. A licensed Real Estate Agent in California, Mari long ago discovered that members of her U.S. Foreign Service community needed a centralized, international resource that could enable them to buy and invest in U.S. real estate from anywhere in the world. Of course, actually building that business, Afield Real Estate, with her partners, Claire Boyte-White and Lesley Clarke, while moving around the globe, was no easy feat.

“Bold, culture-shifting initiatives from the Qatar Foundation, like the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), have really inspired us to think bigger than we ever thought we could”, said Afield’s Executive Vice President, Claire Boyte-White. “We’ve actually expanded our offerings and developed a new kind of real estate service that I don’t think had ever really been tried before – a completely bespoke, customized service that gives our clients access to exclusive properties and opportunities they normally wouldn’t have the time or networks to access– and a lot of the courage to do that came from seeing what other women around the world are doing.”

Though Afield is a U.S. company focused on U.S. real estate, Mari’s connection to Doha has opened up the company’s international appeal as well. In fact, Afield recently As the three American women built announced a collaboration with Afield over the past three years, they Doha’s own Yezenia Navarro. learned to adapt – to be flexible with Ms. Navarro noted that this work A completely bespoke, customized time zones and opposing schedules – is a departure from what she’s service that gives our clients access to but they also learned just how much typically known for, but said she exclusive properties and opportunities their international exposure could has been inspired to branch out they normally wouldn’t have the time teach them about how to build a by watching Qatari leaders. “Here business from the heart. in Qatar, we have such inspiring or networks to access female leaders like Sheikha Moza Mari says she continues to be amazed and Sheikha Al-Mayassa. DRESS CODE FOR MEN By Dr.Marie Abou Rached

Have you ever received an invitation that doesn’t list a dress code? Have you ever get lost while choosing semi-formal, formal or casual attire? Here are some hints below.

Why is the dress code useful for the host and for the guest? Having a dress code on the invitation card is helpful for the guest to know which attire is exactly required. In the other hand it guarantees the event to stay as casual, semi-formal or formal as the host’s wants. Which occasions or events should include a dress code? Dinners’ invitations. Weddings’ invitations. Cocktails or Receptions’ invitations. Daytime events’ invitations. Nighttime events’ invitations. Where does the dress code go on the invitation card? The dress code should be printed at the bottom center, or at the bottom right of the invitation. In case of receiving an invitation without a dress code, it is preferable to contact the host by sending an email or a text message. Although, it is not a wrong idea to ask one of the attendees about the dress code. In case, no one to ask, the time and the setting of the event is to be considered. Evening events are more formal with darker colors. Outdoors and morning events are more semi-formal and casual. It is safer to be overdressed than to show up less formally dressed. White Tie: The white tie dress code is required for the most formal events such as diplomatic events, or high-formality award ceremonies. Formal wear depends on the events’ timing. For daytime events, men can dress with a tailcoat and vest, while at night gentlemen dress in long-tail tuxedos. Ladies dress in full-length ball gowns. Formal Attire: The formal attire dress code is often misunderstood. Suits and ties are not the right choice for formal attire. Gentlemen have to choose a high dress code. It’s recommended to put on a tuxedo. Ladies can wear a floor length dress. Black Tie: the black tie dress code is required as a dress code for evening affair. Tuxedos are recommended for gentlemen. Ladies have to wear formal gowns.

Black Tie Optional: a black tie optional dress code gives the men an option to wear a tuxedo or a black suit and a tie (or a bow tie). ( Ladies are given the choice to wear a long dress or a cocktail dress). Business Formal: The business formal dress code is required for daytime and semi-formal events such as work lunch, conferences, etc. Gentlemen are supposed to wear business appropriate attire that reflects that you are dressed up. The best business formal attire is a dark suit that is paired with a white dress shirt, a conservative tie, and black leather oxfords Ladies have to wear a pantsuit or a tailored dress. Business Casual: The business casual attire is mostly required for offices. Gentlemen can wear chinos, or slacks pants with collared shirt (tucked in). (Jeans, sneakers and sandals are inappropriate). Ladies can wear pants or a pencil skirt and a blazer. Cocktail Attire, Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual: The cocktail or semi-formal attire is slightly less chic version than formal attire. This dress code calls for a dark suit and a tie for gentlemen. Ladies can wear a cocktail dress or black pant with an elegant blouse. Casual Attire: Casual attire allows men and women to have decent sneakers. Gentlemen can wear a pair of jeans or any casual pants with button-down shirt, a blazer or polo shirt. Ladies can wear a summer dress, jeans or a jumpsuit. Beach Formal: Gentlemen dress a summer suit with linen shirt and linen pants. Ladies can wear formal summer sundress with knee length, paired with flats) Tips: The best way to find out what to wear is to expect what the host is going to wear. 1.

Tuxedos are wrong choice for daytime events.

2.

Gray suits or dark brown suits are acceptable for daytime events.

3.
