Secret Notes Boutique Launches Nicolai collection at Doha Festival City

ecret Notes boutique, recently launched New collection from Nicolai’. To celebrate the launch of the new fragrances, a cocktail reception was hosted at the second branch of secret notes in
Doha Festival City. Present at the launch were Patricia de Nicolaï, Owner of NICOLAÏ PARFUMEUR-CREATEUR Nabil Abu Issa, Vice chairman of Abu Issa Holding group and Fawaz Al Idrisi CEO of Abu Issa Holding group. With the opening of NICOLAÏ PARFUMEURCREATEUR in 1989, Patricia de Nicolaï and her husband Jean-Louis Michau took an audacious gamble by creating, signing and selling her own perfumes. The era of the auteur in the perfume business hadn’t yet arrived, and being a ‘nose’ (professional perfumer) was primarily a man’s role. From the beginning, the house of NICOLAÏ has taken devotion to top quality and complete creative freedom as its credo, maintaining a distinguished elegance that never bows to the diktats of marketing. This was the philosophy of the Guerlain family, from which Patricia is a descendant on her mother’s side. She is the great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain who, with his brother Jacques as chief perfume designer, propelled their company to success in the first part of the 20th century. Over the years, such rigour has captured an audience hungering for beautiful creations. Today, NICOLAÏ PARFUMEUR-CREATEUR is one of the jewels of the independent French perfume industry, whose products are exported around the world. Patricia is now assisted in her creative work by her son Axel de Nicolaï, who is also the enterprise’s director-general for development. For the Nicolaï family values both passion and tradition.

BMW 7 SERIES THIS MIGHT BE THE MOST ADVANCED LUXURY LIMO IN THE WORLD BY: TAREK HAWCHAR
F
or as long as big, luxury limousines have existed, German manufacturers have dominated the segment. As a general consensus, the Mercedes S-Class was usually the nicest to be in, the BMW 7-Series had the best chassis, and the Audi A7 aced the other two in the looks department. The truth is, they were virtually indistinguishable unless you really wanted to nitpick. You’d be happy with either one of the three without ever looking back. With the new S-Class set to hit the market sometime in 2020, BMW has decided to beat the Stuttgart manufacturer to the punch and launch their own rival first. There’s been speculation of a new facelifted 7-Series for years now, but BMW managed to keep specifics relatively hidden. Finally, in early 2019 they broke radio silence at the Geneva Motor Show. Although this isn’t an entirely new platform but rather a facelift of the outgoing 7-Series, it certainly looks the part. To give it a proper review and experience how the changes BMW implemented affect the finished product, we were invited to sunny Faro, Portugal. The mix of open roads with flowing corners, and small, twisty hill bends, gave the new 7-Series a real workout. EXTERIOR The pictures you’re seeing are not photoshopped. The front grille really is that massive. I’d say around 90 percent of all comments addressed towards the way the new 7-Series look were somehow related to that giant grille up front, but it isn’t all bad news. In the flesh when you get up close and personal with it, it somehow looks alright. I’d still prefer a smaller grille, but there are certain angles and creases which don’t translate well to camera but make the thing pop out in real life. It looks silly head on but the side profile is good. Other changes up front include a revised front bumper with a large central opening, as well as slimmer and more aggressive headlights.
18
L I F E ST Y L E
As standard, the redesigned 7-Series comes fitted with adaptive LED technology but you can opt for the Laserlight units for a small premium. Having tried both I’d say the LED units are more than up to the job. The Laserlights seem like a novelty, but they do work better it has to be said. It’s just that the differences are mostly visual, from the outside, and you don’t get any real benefits as a driver. Still, if you like the way they look, go for it. From the side profile, it’s still undisputedly a 7-Series. The wheelbase is long, the overhangs are massive, but the whole car sits better on the road than the last model ever did. The rear is more modern too. The taillights are slimmer now, and there’s a central trim line along with the brake line running across connecting them. The lower bumper integrates the two large exhaust openings, one on either side. The rear is definitely more understated than the front, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. INTERIOR I know I said this is just a minor facelift, but the changes inside are equal to those of a new model, not a facelift. For starters, there’s sixcolor LED ambient lighting to create a more pleasant atmosphere for the occupants. The allnew instrument cluster is now a 12.3-inch digital screen, just like in the Merc or the Audi. There’s a heads-up display too, showcasing all the vital info the driver needs at any given moment. Those seated in the rear can enjoy 10-inch HD touchscreen units nested in the front seats. There’s a Blu-ray player for ultimate convenience, and rear passengers can also control various infotainment features such as the navigation and online search functions.
L I F E ST Y L E
19
An innovative feature is the BMW Touch Command. It’s essentially a removable tablet which can be utilized even outside the car. Using the tablet the user can digitally control the seats, the lighting, the climate control, and even the infotainment screen. Wi-Fi hotspot is standard and so is wireless charging. People looking for the latest in technology will be seriously impressed by the optional Night Vision feature, showing you real-time “heat-emitting” imaging on the Control Display. The whole system is controlled by the new iDrive 7 infotainment system with 20 gigabytes of storage space. Elsewhere it’s your usual 7-Series really. Top of the line materials, superb build quality, and more interior space than you’d ever need. ENGINE & PERFORMANCE There are three petrol variants on offer, a 740i, a 750i, and an M760i. The first one wears the B58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing 340 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, while the second makes do with the same 4.4-liter twinturbocharged V8 like the one in the 850i. In 7-Series trim it makes 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. All engines utilize the brilliant ZF eight-speed auto. Needless to say, the 850i is the much faster proposition of the two. Because inline-six engines, especially BMW ones, are so inherently smooth though, the 740i is just as good as the V8 provided you don’t want/need the extra power. BMW discontinued the rear-wheel drive option for the 750i, meaning you can only have it in xDrive flavor. The 740i can still be specified as a rear-wheel-drive limo however, but very few people will do so.
20
L I F E ST Y L E
The flagship M760Li remains, but it gets a small decrease in horsepower, now producing a total of 592 horsepower. As a consequence of less horsepower, BMW engineers have been able to ramp up torque to 850 Nm. In a big limo such as the 7-Series, torque is the more important figure. There’s a third, hybrid variant on the table, called the 745e iPerformance (previously called the 740e). It uses the same inline-six engine as the 740i, but thanks to a couple of electric motors, it now produces 389 horsepower and 599 Nm of torque. A new 12 kWh battery pack increases overall electric range too. To drive, the M760Li is, without a doubt, the fastest and most refined. It’s essentially two inline-six units, so it’s inherently balanced and efficient. The 7-Series’ is still the best car of the three German offerings dynamically though, but the 750i feels a little bit lighter on its feet compared to the M760Li. The 740i is the lightest and most affordable model, so it will probably be the most popular too. In all honesty, you can’t go wrong with any of the engines on offer, it’s all down to personal preference. CONCLUSION As of now, this might be the most advanced luxury limo in the world. We’ll have to wait for the new S-Class to drop for the final verdict, but as things stand, Mercedes have a real threat on their hands in the form of this new 7-Series.

BMW 8 CONVERTIBLE THE BEST LUXURY CONVERTIBLE ON THE MARKET ? BY: TAREK HAWCHAR
O
ne of BMW’s most popular model throughout the 1990s was the nowiconic 8-Series. Although it never sold in huge figures due to its price, it was easily one of the most sought-after cars back in its day. After a nearly 20 year hiatus, BMW decided to bring the nameplate back, and take the fight to Mercedes and their newly christened S-Class Coupe. Naturally, no Coupe is complete without its Convertible counterpart, hence the new 8-Series Convertible. The question now is not can the 8-Series Convertible take the fight to the S-Class, but can both of them take the fight to cars like the Bentley Continental Convertible. To answer that question and see how the new 8-Series Convertible drives, we flew to sunny Faro, Portugal, where BMW held a first drive of the 8-Series as well as the facelifted 7-Series, which we also drove. A sunny Mediterranean country with excellent ribbons of tarmac and arguably one of the best convertibles currently on the market. If you asked me to describe the perfect place to review what might be the perfect car, I wouldn’t be able to come up with a better answer if I tried! EXTERIOR First thing’s first, let’s talk about the design. In essence, it’s just an 8-Series Coupe with the roof lobbed off, but I think it’s so much more than that. The current BMW design language lends itself so much better to a convertible that I struggle to make a case for the Coupe, despite the fact I’m a Coupe advocate simply because of the way they drive. To look at though, the ‘vert is definitely the one to go for. Although BMW has a habit of enlarging the front grille to disproportionate sizes these days, as they did on the 7-Series or the X7, the 8-Series seems largely unaffected. It’s still enormous by normal standards, but it isn’t ridiculous. It’s wide but it isn’t particularly tall, I think that might have something to do with it. The fact that it fills up the front fascia rather nicely is also a big bonus. The headlights are full adaptive LED units as standard but you can opt for the Laserlight ones if you want to spend even more money on optional extras.
22
L I F E ST Y L E
There are 20 and 21-inch wheels to choose from, but the latter fill up the wheel arches a little bit better. While most of the body panels on the convertible are identical to those on the Coupe, the rear trunk lid is somewhat different, mostly to accommodate the retractable soft top. Speaking of the soft top, BMW is proud in producing one of the lightest yet most durable soft tops on any convertible. It can be opened and closed at speeds of up to 50 km/h and the entire procedure takes just 15 seconds. It comes in black as standard but you can also have it with an Anthracite Silver effect. INTERIOR Inside it’s exactly like the 8-Series Coupe, much to the surprise of no one. That being said, this is easily the most luxurious convertible BMW has ever made. The quality of the materials is superb, so much so that you might be tempted to put the roof up even on overcast days just to not run the chance of sudden rainfall ‘ruining’ your lovely interior. There’s space for four adults but the rear seats should be ideally used for shorter journeys. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is a joy to use, and so is the 10.25-inch digital infotainment screen running the new iDrive 7 system. Convertible-specific features include a wind deflector to reduce turbulence as standard and integrated neck warmers in the front head restraints. Other optional extras such as ventilated seats and the Heat Comfort Package with a heated steering wheel are especially worth having in the Convertible, whereas I’d say they’re definitely a luxury in the Coupe. The Cabriolet sacrifices some trunk space to fit the folding roof, but not much. With the top closed, there’s 350 liters of boot space, a 70-liter deficit when compared to the Coupe. Not inconsiderable, but not a deal-breaker either.
L I F E ST Y L E
23
ENGINE & PERFORMANCE There’s just one petrol variant and it comes in the form of an M850i xDrive. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 produces 530 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque at just 1,800 rpm, capable of accelerating this relatively heavy ‘vert to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. Sending power to all four wheels is a brilliant ZF eight-speed auto like the one found in most BMW models. Straight line speed is one thing, but I wanted to find out if it will actually corner. This is a big GT car, so I’m not expecting M3 performance, but it has to be able to live up to its BMW badge. To that extent, I can safely say I was pleasantly surprised. Even on small and twisty Portuguese roads, where it had no business being thrown around in the manner I drove it in, it performed exceptionally well. Body roll was well countered and the 8-Series managed to mask its weight relatively well. The only time you’re aware of its weight is when you slam on the brakes and ask it to come to a standstill at an unreasonable rate. The surprising thing is that it does, thanks to massive M-performance brakes and wide, grippy tires.
24
L I F E ST Y L E
The upcoming S-Class Convertible might be more luxurious than the 8-Series (if that’s even possible), but I doubt it’ll have the same road-holding characteristics the Beemer has. To put it simply, it’s a GT car which isn’t aware that it’s a GT car. It behaves in a manner much closer to sportscar dynamics than that of a grand tourer. CONCLUSION The best luxury convertible on the market? I’d say so, at least for the moment. The current S-Class Coupe isn’t a match, and the Bentley is far too different for me to place them as direct rivals. The Bentley is a much more relaxed driving proposition, one which you never want to press on at anything more than five-tenths. The 8-Series on the other hand can be enjoyed at any pace, even ten-tenths.

Speaking in his welcoming remarks at the event, Jaidah Group Executive Director Mr. Mohamed Jaidah, said: “It was a pleasure to hold the event in the iconic Baharat Square in Msheireb Downtown, a symbol of Qatar’s sustainable future.

The location of tonight’s event is a space that perfectly demonstrates what can be achieved when innovation comes to life, blending technology and creativity to create a unique environment in Qatar.” He added: “In a few short years, Genesis has become an icon of luxury, the Korean way. It has developed three separate models. And now we unveiled the updated flagship Genesis G90 model with its futuristic design which evolves the brand’s signature Athletic Elegance design language. The updated flagship Genesis G90 adds to our portfolio, in line with our commitment to offer the people in Qatar the best products and customer service available.” Addressing Mr. Mohammed Saadoun Al Kuwari and Mr. Hassan Al Haydous, Al Jaidah added: “It is a pleasure to collaborate with Mr. Mohammed Sadoon Al Kuwari on “The Path.” The programme will no doubt inspire our young generation to pursue their dreams by shedding light on the journeys of our national success stories. I would also like to thank our national team captain Hassan Al Haydous for taking part in the first episode.” Al Jaidah concluded his remarks by extending his gratitude to emerging Qatari artist, Ms. Bouthayna Al Muftah, for her incredible artwork featuring the new Genesis G90, which was also displayed at the event.
The 2020 G90 incorporates exterior and interior design changes, which further enhances the sedan’s presence as the brand’s flagship vehicle. The new “Quad Lamp” styling theme, featuring prominent horizontal architecture seen throughout the sedan, signals design cues that will be incorporated in all future Genesis models. The 2020 G90 introduces multiple technology enhancements and firsts for the Genesis brand. For example, the 12.3-inch central display is reengineered to incorporate a new Graphic User Interface that features the signature Genesis black and copper color scheme. Furthermore, the car’s interior design includes a parallel layout and exquisite new details in the quilted Nappa leather seating and additional leather rapping on the center console. The interior atmosphere of the new G90 also features an Active Noise Cancelation technology to reduce exterior noises and allow the driver to fully concentrate and embrace the experience of driving a Genesis vehicle. The 2020 G90 is available in the flagship Skyline Automotive showroom on Salwa Road. Episodes from The Path programme can be viewed through: http://thepathqatar.com

EX NIHILO PERFUMES An interview with Sylvie Loday
32
L I F E ST Y L E
How would you like to describe your brand? EX NIHILO means ‘created from scratch’; we love the idea to break the rules and reinvent the past to better create the future. Revisit ‘High Perfumery through a unique Parisian Avant-Garde Prism’. It means focusing on the best of French craftsmanship as well as bringing the best of technology with a focus on personalization. If we were a car company, some of our competitors could easily be Bentley or Rolls-Royce, we would be Tesla! We love Concorde or Citroen SM and the golden era in France in the 70s, we want to bring back some ‘French Panache’ today!
Where do you draw your inspiration from? Surprisingly, not being perfumers helped us think out of the box and bring fresh, disruptive ideas about the fragrance experience as a whole 360° journey. We draw inspiration from many fields in the artistic community such as fashion, architecture, design, photography, to propose a fresh version of what new French Avant-Garde could be. Today, we try not to be inspired too much by what we can find online or through social media because everybody goes to the same source like Pinterest or Instagram, I prefer to source from old magazines and obscures books and the most important idea comes from our conversations with the perfumers we work with.
What kind of raw materials do you use in your perfumery? We only use the best ingredients in the market without any limits on cost. Proposing the most exclusive quality is our ethos. Our Rose Of May from Grasse costs about USD50,000/kg, for example.
“
PERSONALIZATION IS NOW A MUST-HAVE IN THE LUXURY FIELD How do you personalize your perfumes for your customers? To us, personalization is now a Must-Have in the luxury field. At our main destinations around the world, including our Paris flagship, we use a technology we call the Osmologue. If you can’t travel to one of our Top-Tier stores we propose also a DIY experience around our SUBLIMES ESSENCES (scented oils), a range of five perfumed oils you can combine with your favorite fragrance to make your own mix. Then you will be able to complete it soon with our Hair Mists - the SUBLIME MIST, a range of three products to be used as perfect matches with your favorite EX NIHILO product. To be more precise about the Osmologue in our flagships: our ritual is really an immersive experience into the core of fragrance creation. Through our exclusive technology, we mix a futuristic ritual with the best of French craftsmanship for a unique result, I would say it’s a Techno Craft approach. You can walk in or do it on private appointment (what I would recommend). Then, around a cup of coffee, we will deeply understand what the customer is looking for, through a little oral questionnaire.
In Europe, people are quite scared by the synthetic materials and crave for natural ingredients, but we try to associate the best of both worlds!
It will be the occasion to smell the absolute of fragrances like the Rose of May, Iris Pallida and Orange Blossom in their purest form, and also to experience all our combinations according to your mood.
Do you create special fragrances for the Middle East market?
All these combinations have been validated by our team of master perfumers here in Paris.
We regularly collaborate with designers and artist besides our perfumers to propose unique and very exclusive products. We started with a super-exclusive fragrance by French perfumer Yan Vasnier, called NIGHT CALL, when we entered the region a few years ago. We often propose exclusive products in London, but to celebrate our arrival at GL Doha, we partnered with Sheika Noor Al Thani to create a special mix around our beloved VENENUM KISS by French perfumer Quentin Bisch, the author of our bestseller, FLEUR NARCOTIQUE. It is only available here and we are already almost sold out.
Once your choice is done, we will proceed to the making of your juice with the Osmologue, the High Tech robot we have specifically developed. It will weigh, blend and create your own composition only in a few minutes in front of you. So, you will be able to leave with your own scent without waiting weeks to get the result. We will also give you a nominative certificate of authenticity and keep all your preferences in our database so that we can provide the very best level of custom service.

Perfumery is a field of experimentation as well as free expression
Tell us about your unique collaboration with Sheika Noor Al Thani It was a great project and a great honor for us to work with her, she is such a fragrance connoisseur. She was one of our first customers, and her favorite creation is VENENUM KISS. It made sense to ask her to collaborate for an exclusive fragrance, adding her personal touch as soon as we were launching the brand at Galleries Lafayette Doha ! Tell us about the VENENUM KISS Musk, what makes it exclusive? VENENUM KISS is a creation by Quentin Bisch (he is also the creator of our most iconic creation, FLEUR NARCOTIQUE), it is a sophisticated elixir with hints of candied Apricot and Vanilla.
S Y LV I E L O D AY

L I F E ST Y L E
She asked us to subtly add some hints of white Musk to sublimate the obsessive caress of Amber and Suede, the Velvet breath of Rose and Saffron. We only made 100 pieces! And it comes with a special design she has created over our iconic black box. A precious red Mother of Pearl cap, with her
blazon engraved, adorns the bottle.
Tell us about your latest exclusive creations for Galleries Lafayette Doha This fragrance is our main focus for the moment but we will be working on a lot of surprises for the upcoming year, you can expect beautiful scented creations - so be ready!
What value does your presence in Galleries Lafayette Doha add to the brand? We are a Parisian brand, born and raised, we are exclusive to the GL Haussmann and now also available at GL Champs Elysées. So, for us it makes sense to continue our partnership. Besides, we have strong links with and a heavy following among Qatari customers since the inception of the brand. How do you think a person’s choice of perfume reflects his/her personality? For me, perfumery is a field of experimentation as well as free expression, it is the ultimate signature of your true personality. You can’t lie with a fragrance.
“ I discovered EX NIHILO at the Salon De
Parfums in Harrods about four years ago and loved the idea of the Osmologue and personalizing fragrances. So that made me keep exploring the brand. One thing that sets it apart is the fragrance personalization. Not many brands offer the ability to add your own touch to a fragrance
”
Sheikha Noor Al Thani
Uniqueness is for me to stand out from the crowd, to assume who you are and how you express it to the world. Wearing a confidential fragrance with a strong personality is a way to tell everybody who you are, especially because it has been customized.

HUBLOT CELEBRATES THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF SCUDERIA FERRARI Big Bang Scuderia Ferrari 90th Anniversary
T
o celebrate this birthday, Hublot, which has been a longstanding partner of Scuderia Ferrari, is proud to present the Big Bang Scuderia Ferrari 90th Anniversary watch. This is a model that reflects the rich history and heritage of Scuderia
Ferrari realized in three limited editions conceived in collaboration with the Ferrari Design Centre. These pieces illustrate the development of the materials used in car racing over the years. This is a permanent quest of both companies, as illustrated by Hublot’s motto “The Art of Fusion”. No future and no victories without innovation. It is only through technical and technological research that the two houses have been able to maintain their respective positions in their respective worlds. The 45mm diameter of each of the three editions houses the famous UNICO movement, a flyback chronograph that offers a 72-hour power reserve. Their bezel is cut in ceramic carbon, the same material that is used for Formula 1 brake discs. The first version is inspired by the early years of Scuderia Ferrari and its glorious past. The visible metal parts, the peccary leather from the bucket seats and the brushed look of the dashboard are represented here by the platinum case and the stitched perforated strap. Its dial evokes old-fashioned speedometers with its calendar underlined in yellow. In this way, it falls in-line with the purest traditions of car racing. The 3D carbon that is used to make the case of the second edition reflects the present day Scuderia Ferrari. Today, research into new composite materials and high-technology are all powerful in competition driving. Its strap is made from Nomex—the fire-resistant synthetic fibre used to make racing driver’s suits—on which the red and black stitching makes a striking contrast. Its colour code is black and red, the colours currently used by Scuderia Ferrari for its single-seater Formula 1 cars.

The third model is instantly recognisable by its transparent case made from sapphire, an innovative material that is hard to work, giving it a resolutely futuristic style. It demonstrates the extreme sophistication that technology is heading towards and the possibilities it offers for the future. A promise of innovations that will apply to both car manufacture and watchmaking. Its strap adopts a highly futuristic Kevlar look. Each of the three versions of the Hublot Big Bang Scuderia Ferrari 90th Anniversary watch bears one of the three colours of the Scuderia on its border, the numbers and the index. Yellow for the platinum edition, red for the 3D carbon edition and black for the sapphire edition. All three will be produced in a limited edition of 90, and 10 ‘collector’ sets with all three watches will also be available. A bit of history. Scuderia Ferrari came into being on 16th November 1929 in the offices of the notary, Della Fontana of Modena, the company established as the Società Anonima Scuderia Ferrari, with its headquarters in via Trento and Trieste. It was approved by the courts on 29th November and from that moment on the company was effectively operational. The directors of the company were Alfredo and Augusto Caniato, Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Testi. Alfa Romeo and Pirelli were also involved. The team made its debut in the 1930 Mille Miglia and its first win came in the Trieste-Opicina on 15th June that same year, courtesy of the great Tazio Nuvolari. Motorcycles also featured in the Scuderia’s history, from 1932 to 1934 and 1932 marked the first appearance of the Prancing Horse as part of the livery of the Alfa Romeos entered by Ferrari. The symbol came from the family of war hero Francesco Baracca, the horse set on a shield with a yellow background, representing the colour of the city of Modena. Its first win came in the Spa 24 Hours thanks to Antonio Brivio and Eugenio Siena. Starting off racing Alfa Romeo cars and then, from 1947, with cars built in-house, Scuderia Ferrari became the most successful race team of all time, taking thousands of wins in some of the most important races in the world. In Formula 1 alone, it has taken 16 Constructors’ titles and 15 Drivers’. In the world of endurance racing, Ferrari has nine victories to its name in the Le Mans 24 Hours, two at Daytona and five FIA WEC titles and has even been successful in rallying.

the case, while providing resistance and comfort in all circumstances. Exclusively premiered on the RM 07-01 Ladies’ in Carbon TPT®, the new bracelet – made from this same material – encapsulates this ambition. Richard Mille has always aimed to expand its wide collection of straps and bracelets to give all those who wear its creations multiple options for personalising their timepieces. Currently only available to female customers, the Carbon TPT® bracelet is the fruit of 13 months of development, and resolutely asserts its elegant and sporty style. Entirely dressed in Carbon TPT® and titanium from the bezel to the folding clasp, the RM 07-01 Ladies’ combines the architectural complexity of a 200-part metal bracelet with the elegance of a technical material. The combination of these materials gives a total bracelet weight of just 29 grams. A STAR-LIT SKY: AUDEMARS PIGUET’S NEWEST PERPETUAL CALENDAR CODE 11.59 BY AUDEMARS PIGUET
I
n 1978, Audemars Piguet developed the world’s thinnest selfwinding perpetual calendar and with it, paved the way for the revival of classical mechanical complications. This year, the perpetual calendar is making waves again, as part of the
newest CODE 11.59 by Audemars Piguet collection. Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet writes a new page in the Manufacture’s history and represents its genetic code. CODE stands for Challenge, Own, Dare and Evolve. Jasmine Audemars, Chairwoman of Audemars Piguet’s Board of Directors, who also attended the event, explains, “At Audemars Piguet, we constantly challenge ourselves to push the limits of craftsmanship. Endowed with a strong spirit of independence, we proudly own our roots and territory, daring to combine precision and creativity. Faithful to our legacy, we continue to evolve by preserving and rewriting traditions. 11.59 is ahead of the game, constantly on the brink of tomorrow.” The contemporary evolution of a classic, this collection gives a contemporary twist and a certain edginess to the classic round watch. Its highly recognisable case boldly embeds an octagonal middle case within a round bezel and caseback, alluding to the Manufacture’s long history of unconventional form and design languages. Chamfered, polished and satin-brushed, the bezel, openworked lugs and case present high complexity finishing techniques usually found on calibres. Designed for both men and women, this 41 mm case also presents an arched ergonomics comfortable for all to wear. An astronomical watch par excellence, the Perpetual Calendar of the CODE 11.59 by Audemars Piguet collection features a dark blue aventurine dial and subdials recalling a star-lit sky. Aventurine glass was created in the 17th century thanks to a chance manipulation (“all’avventura”) in a Murano glass factory when copper filings were dropped into cooling molten glass, creating a constellation of sparkling particles. Today, this glass is obtained by introducing black copper oxide and cobalt that give the blue colour to the glass. The pink gold case, hands and applied hour-markers enrich the deep blue sparkling constellation of the aventurine dial.
52
WATC H E S & J E W E L L E RY
The dial’s starry particles resonate with the moon indication at 6 o’clock. A photographic image of the moon is reproduced through laser engraving and applied on an aventurine disc that subtly matches the design of the dial. The astronomical moon serves to diminish the daily display error. Thanks to this function, adjustment is required once every 122 years and 108 days. In addition to providing the astronomical moon indication at 6 o’clock, the perpetual calendar indicates the day number and week day at 3 and 9 o’clock respectively, the month at 12 o’clock, the week numbers on the lacquered blue inner bezel, as well as the hours and minutes. The clarity of the Aventurine dial and its intricacies as well as the expertly designed subdials and markers are further enhanced by the complex double curved glareproofed sapphire crystal created for the CODE 11.59 by Audemars Piguet collection. The glass’s internal surface is shaped like a dome, while its external surface is vertically curved from 6 to 12 o’clock. The glass’ arched profile embodies the watch’s contemporary design. Playing with depth, perspective and light, this double curved crystal offers a unique visual experience, while enhancing the detailed work on the dial. The CODE 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar houses selfwinding Manufacture calibre 5134 optimised with the collection’s signature openworked weight in 22-carat gold, visible through the watch’s caseback. Devoted to the preservation and transmission of its passion, savoir-faire and avant-garde spirit, Audemars Piguet continues to infuse its timepieces with enduring values of artistic excellence and technical mastery, clearly showcased with its newest Perpetual Calendar.
“To break the rules, you must first master them.”

BOVET Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter One Sapphire “writing slope” case, flying tourbillon, three-dimensional moon phase, big date, 10 days’ power reserve
I
n 2016, BOVET 1822 unveiled the Shooting Star tourbillon, the first timepiece in an exclusive collection dedicated to astronomy. The Astérium and Grand Récital tourbillons then followed in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Each of the
three timepieces boasted groundbreaking technical specificities and explored new ways of measuring time, and each was also housed in a characteristic inclined case, inspired by and shaped like a sloped writing desk. Designed by BOVET 1822 Owner, Mr. Raffy, the “writing slope” case features a bezel inclined at 6 o’clock. This ingenious idea makes it possible to diversify and organize the types of displays by using domes, rollers, discs, and three-dimensional hands to enhance intuitiveness, ergonomics, and elegance. The threedimensional design prioritizes information for improved readability and brings the collector’s eye to the heart of the movement to discover the excellence found in each detail. As seen by the numerous awards bestowed on the trilogy’s timepieces, notably including the Aiguille d’Or Grand Prix which honored Grand Récital at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève in 2018, collectors and experts commend the stylistic revolution of the “writing slope” case. Mr. Raffy’s inspired “writing slope” case design meets and once again exceeds collectors’ expectations in the Maison’s latest timepiece, the Récital 23, by simultaneously introducing four complications developed specifically to be housed within the “writing slope” case. Unveiled at SIHH 2019, the Récital 26 Brainstorm® Chapter One presents a host of innovations and gives a glimpse of the scope of the unprecedented possibilities for interpreting timekeeping offered by the “writing slope” case. For this first Brainstorm® chapter, Mr. Raffy wanted a sapphire model. Chosen for its crystalline transparency, sapphire is also the second hardest material known after diamond. The lightness of sapphire is also unsurpassed, and in fact weighs less than titanium. This novel choice represented a major challenge for Maison BOVET’s technicians. While sapphire cases have been in use for almost forty years, their designs have, up to present, remained relatively simple, due to the machining and polishing constraints posed by this extremely hard material. The asymmetric profile of the middle, bezel, and glass of the “writing slope” case confronted engineers and technicians with hitherto unresolved difficulties.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE TAG HEUER MONACO AT THE GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW In 1969, Heuer launched the Monaco – Fifty years later, TAG Heuer celebrates this iconic model with the exclusive ‘TAG Heuer Monaco 50 years Anniversary Exhibition’
TAG Heuer, the avant-garde Swiss watch brand is proud to present the exclusive ‘TAG Heuer Monaco 50 years Anniversary Exhibition’ at the 89th Geneva International Motor Show and celebrate the iconic Monaco; an unconventional timepiece that introduced two cutting-edge world firsts, the Monaco was a product of Heuer’s vision and pioneering spirit. Half a century later, this iconic model is being honoured with events in Europe, the US and Asia throughout 2019 – and a new Monaco limited-edition model will be launched at each event to celebrate the timepiece that first caught the world’s attention 50 years ago. A new book titled Paradoxical Superstar documents the historical and technical highlights of this unlikely icon and will be available in TAG Heuer boutiques and on the website from May 2019. Looking back on 50 years of the TAG Heuer Monaco As is the case with many iconic design classics, the Heuer Monaco (TAG was not part of the company name at the time) divided opinion. When it was introduced at simultaneous press conferences in New York and Geneva on 3 March 1969, most people’s reactions were less than enthusiastic. Every aspect of the watch’s design was radical: the metallic blue dial, the red and light blue hands, the square case and the placement of the crown on the left-hand side. “We wanted to create an outstanding and innovative product, something avant-garde,” said TAG Heuer Honorary Chairman Jack Heuer. “When I saw the square case, I immediately knew it was something special. Until then, square cases were only used for dress watches because it was not possible to make them water-resistant. We went forward with this unconventional design and negotiated the exclusive use of this revolutionary case for the Monaco wrist chronograph.” The Monaco’s daring design made it instantly recognisable, and it was the perfect complement to the advanced technology the Swiss watchmaker presented at the same time: the first waterresistant square case and the Calibre 11, the first automatic-winding chronograph movement. The Calibre 11 was the result of three years of close collaboration between watch brands Heuer, Breitling and Hamilton, and became the first automatic chronograph. The then CEO of Heuer, Jack Heuer, was not really a fan of the watch’s design either, but he believed the groundbreaking innovations needed a design that would demand attention.
58
WATC H E S & J E W E L L E RY
The Monaco did exactly that. The disruptive design was difficult to produce, and its popularity among watch aficionados and collectors was not immediate, but it remained in the collection. Strong links to the world of motorsports Jack Heuer was convinced that motor racing was the right way to promote watches, including the Monaco. He wanted the watches (and dashboard timers) his company produced to be linked to the names and places connected with major races. The Monaco got its name from the glamorous and well-known Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. TAG Heuer is the Official Watch of the Monaco Top Cars Collection museum and has close ties to the Automobile Club de Monaco. From Le Mans to The Dark Lord In 1971, the Monaco shared the cinematic limelight with Steve McQueen in the movie Le Mans. In the mid-1970s, the Monaco received a makeover. At that time, black was becoming a fashionable colour, and so the Monaco was cloaked in a black anodised case. Known as The Dark Lord, this fragile and rare model was enticing and today it is coveted by collectors. The first chapter of the Monaco’s story ends in the late 1970s. The evolution of the Calibre 11 Heuer became TAG Heuer in 1985, and, in 1998, the Monaco’s story continued with a relaunch model inspired by the original. This time, it was received with much more acclaim. Over the past two decades, the Monaco has been closely linked to haute horlogerie, with other versions that feature new complications, designs and materials. As it has evolved, the Monaco has kept the revolutionary spirit that made it both infamous and popular. Catherine Eberlé-Devaux, TAG Heuer Heritage Director, comments: “To me, the Monaco is a door to the TAG Heuer brand. It’s a piece that catches your eye and invites you in. Many collectors start with the Monaco and are then drawn into our world, eventually finding another collection to focus on, but always cherishing the piece that started it all.” A tell-all book about the TAG Heuer Monaco and its evolution In honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the TAG Heuer Monaco, the Swiss watchmaker is releasing a book that captures the history and spirit of the unlikely icon. Paradoxical Superstar documents the lifetime of the Monaco with archive excerpts, never-before-seen pictures, and sketches of the designs and movements. Renowned British journalist Nicholas Foulkes wrote a chapter focusing on the Monaco’s history from 1969 to today. Writer and watch expert Gisbert Brunner authored a chapter about the technical innovation that has played an important role in the Monaco’s success. Famous American writer, editor and watch aficionado Michael Clerizo documents the Monaco’s relationship with Steve McQueen in the third chapter of the book. Underscoring the timepiece’s bond with its namesake city, H. S. H. Prince Albert II of Monaco wrote the book’s foreword.

Just factor that into your budget. 30. My vision is women dreaming freely and myself as a aid and support to make those dreams come true. Today AnnaDreams is designing and tailoring women’s clothing that uses natural high-quality fabrics, such as 100% silk, cotton, linen, and velvet. We are continually creating single, custom-made pieces. One woman, one outfit, one look, never to be repeated. Our team is made up of personal stylists, beauty and fashion advisors, tailors, make-up and hair professionals, skin care and nail technicians, fitness trainers, photographers and videographers, and modelling coaches. Together we work to unveil a woman’s true beauty. I end with words that are not mine but speak the truth of my dreaming heart:
“
Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it;
Boldness has genius, powerand magic in it. ” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe -

PROBLEM SOLVING • If you feel like your lens is stuck in your eye after you rub your eyes, the lens might fold in half and dislodge from the cornea. The folded lens might get stuck under your upper eyelid so that it seems to have disappeared. In this case, it is recommended to gently massage your eyelid and blink frequently to move the lens to the center of your eye to remove it. If necessary, rinse your eye with sterile saline or multipurpose solution to loosen the lens. P.S: IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE LENS TO GET TRAPPED OR LOST COMPLETELY IN YOUR EYE! • If your eyes are dry: try using lubricating eye drops, possibly combined with other dry eye treatments including eye vitamins, to eliminate the burning sensation. • If your eyes are burning: that is usually caused by sensitivity to your contact lens solutions, therefore switching to a preservativefree contact lens care system should help.

SUMMER MAKEUP: TIPS & TRICKS By Rimma Polovynka Naturalness has always been in fashion, and now it is more relevant than ever. Spring-summer make-up is notable for its lightness, brightness and at the same time unobtrusiveness in color. The emphasis is on healthy complexion, glow of your skin, natural shades. But this does not mean that you should completely exclude bright colors: for the evening, you can use a more intense gamut, in the daytime makeup more preferable will be more calm, delicate shades. At the same time, juicy lipstick or glossy lip gloss is always relevant - the main thing is not to overdo it! A characteristic feature of summer makeup is lightness. This is primarily due to an increase in solar activity and an increase in the temperature around, which in turn stimulates sweating and increased sebum production, so the abundance of cosmetics on the skin is absolutely unnecessary. In addition, it is possible that in case of heat the entire makeup may simply “float off the face.

BEAUTY
A few tips to make your summer makeup right:
1. In the summer period, women should switch to using lighter tonal textures: matting mousses, cream fluid with a tinting effect, BB creams. It is best to choose water-based tonal bases/ foundations that will not clog pores and let the skin to breathe.
2. When choosing a product, preference should be given to products with a sun protection factor, this will save skin health.
3. The guarantee of high-quality flight makeup is of course resistance! Therefore, before applying the foundation and after you should use a fixing spray, this will prolong the resistance of the makeup.
4. Light contouring can be performed using a bronzer that will give your skin a slight tanning effect.
5. Waterproof products - great helpers in the heat and when traveling to the sea. Now a wide selection of waterproof cosmetics: pencils, eyeliners, mascaras, eye shadows, lipsticks.
6. Shimmer textures and highlighters are perfect for summer. For example, to give the skin a beautiful glow, you can use not matte powder, but with shimmer. Summer eye makeup can be done with metallic shadows or a chameleon, because these types of eye shadows will delight you with their play of colors in the sun.
7. Color mascara again at the height of fashion! Bright summer makeup can be supplemented with colored eyeliner.
8. Instead of lipstick, you can use a lip balm or lip gloss that will complete your summer look. At the same time choose colors from the most gentle to bright and juicy.
9. To get rid of oily sheen, you can use matting wipes. All these simple recommendations will help you always look fresh and keep your makeup for the whole day!

After this, dry your face well with a towel, and apply toner to tighten your skin and close the pores. Subsequently, use a facial mask with hydrating properties so that your skin does not dry out too easily while absorbing its nutrients. You can make your own mask by using ingredients like avocado, banana or Aloe Vera. Alternatively, you can use a facial peel, to peel off dead skin cells. You can make one out of egg white. You can also use a facial scrub to get the stubborn dead skin cells out so that there is space for your skin cells to regenerate.
othing can feel more relaxing than having your own spa treatment at home. You have your trust all to your hands, and it is even free of charge! Just follow these steps, and you would have your very own spa treatment at home. First, get rid of all distractions. The point of a spa treatment is to relax, so choose a day when you are home alone so that you will only need to concentrate on yourself. You can play some soothing music in the background if it helps you relax. Start off with cleansing your face using a gentle cleanser and warm water. Make sure you wash off all dirt of you face so that your skin can absorb the later products properly.
After that, make sure you moisturize your skin. Use a product with active ingredients such as Vitamin C, copper peptides, hyaluronic acid, retinol, or alpha lipoic acid. Lastly, make sure you apply a layer of sunscreen to your skin so that your efforts would not go to waste by the sun’s skin damaging radiation.
Next, you will want to open up your pores so that you can rid of any embedded dirt. This can be done by doing facial steaming. A homemade facial steam can be done by adding hot water into a basin, and with a towel draped over your head, face the steam from the water for 5 minutes. You can choose to add herbs like rosemary, thyme, or mint to the hot water for a more rejuvenating steam.

Napkin Etiquette by: Dr.Marie Abou Rached
Napkin is a piece of cloth placed on the plate or infront of it. It is used to wipe the mouth before and after drinking, also after eating soup or fatty food. We have to remember that the napkin is not a tissue or a washcloth, so it can never be used to wipe the whole face, the cuttlery or the nose. The napkin has to be placed on the lap but never to be tucked into the shirt.
There are many types of napkins 1. Paper napkins that are inexpensive and convenient. Paper napkins can be used for kids birthdays, picnic and unformal events. 2. Cloth napkins: are more sophisticated and it adds a touch of classiness to the table set. 3. Linen napkins: are used for formal dinner. 4. Cotton napkins: are softer than the linen napkins and it is for home use. 5. Polyester napkins: are used for casual meals. The napkin size has to cover the guest’s lap. Below are some Napkin sizes & tips 1. Napkins for breakfast: its size is18 to 20 inches. 2. Napkins for lunch: its size is 20 inches 3. (the spray starch can help the napkins to stay in place). 6. The event’s theme and location have to be taken into consideration while choosing the napkin. How to use the napkin? 1. When the waiter serves the bread on the left plate is a sign to put the napkin on the lap. 2. If you have to leave the table in the middle of the meal, place the napkin on the chair. 3.
