Galeries Lafayette Doha hosts exhibition for Qatari artist Fahad Al Maadheed

T

rue to the spirit of Galeries Lafayette, and incorporating the element of art in a retail ambience, Galeries Lafayette Doha once again hosted an art exhibition for a local artist – and this time it was

Fahad Al Maadheed. His magnificent paintings are displayed at the art exhibition corner inside Galeries Lafayette Doha, ground floor. The three-week-long exhibition will run till June 22 and is a perfect opportunity to witness the exquisite art of this local talent. The exhibition also includes a live painting station for the artist where he will be available to paint on leather goods such as handbags, wallets and phone covers. Customizations on each product take approximately 2-5 weeks to be finished. Speaking about his art, the young artist said: “My art is my passion and I am glad to be able to be able to share it with the discerning clientele of Galeries Lafayette Doha. It is indeed a pleasure to be a part of this multi-dimensional department store that promotes and patronizes art and culture.” General Manager of Galeries Lafayette Doha Mr. David Miller added: “Art and culture is in our DNA and we take special interest in the works of our incredible local artists. We are proud to showcase the magical brushstrokes of Fahad Al Maadheed on our premises.” Al-Maadheed’s love for art started early in life and he is a selftaught artist, having learnt everything he knows about his art from various online resources. Today, he is well-known all over the Gulf region for his art and represents Qatar at the global level. Al-Madheed has been a part of many prominent exhibitions and workshops in different parts of the Arab World. Apart from his personal exhibitions, which have been acclaimed by art lovers, Al-Maadheed has also been a part of prominent cultural activities such as painting the walls of Katara - the Cultural Village in Doha and events held during the Qatar National Day celebrations.

HENRY JACQUES LAUNCHES ‘LES BRUMES’ Fragrances in a convertible flacon: splash or spray!

I

n its constant quest to bring great perfumery to life, Henry Jacques has introduced a new way of wearing its signature scents, in the form of ‘Les Brumes’. Recognising that we have moments that may call for a simpler approach, a more casual and modern way of enjoying great perfumery, Les Brumes are a lighter expression of Les Classiques, designed to be splashed or sprayed. Previously available only in the more traditional form of Essences, Les Classiques take on a fresh dynamic thanks to this new variation - feeling brighter and more airy, while still possessing the strong heart that makes every Henry Jacques creation so distinctive. The all-new Les Brumes flacon, designed by the Maison’s Artistic Director Christophe Tollemer, is revolutionary – its top switching effortlessly from spray to splash, inviting you to choose the gesture that best suits the moment. The choice is yours; the elegance of the gestures is eternal. A splash… A wave of the hand brings the perfume into direct contact with your skin. A spray… A gentle press of the thumb releases a delicate mist that settles on your clothes or hair. With Les Brumes, the Maison takes the spray concept into new territory, with a degree of quality and innovation that is rare in perfumery. The variation perfectly embodies Henry Jacques’ know-how, creativity and vision, recognised around the world by connoisseurs of great fragrance.

L.U.C GMT One Qatar Watch Club Edition The gentleman-traveller’s timepiece

T

he inherently distinguished L.U.C GMT One Qatar Watch Club Edition provides a dual-time read-off powered

by an original L.U.C 01.10-L movement with integrated GMT function. This gentlemantraveller’s watch stands out by the sheer elegance of its details and the intensely practical nature of its horological complication. A modern design and finely crafted finishes make it a perfect travelling companion for the 30 privileged individuals who will have the chance of acquiring this limited edition proposed by Chopard to honour the first anniversary of the Qatar Watch Club. An aura of distinction and stylistic balance To celebrate the first anniversary of the Qatar Watch Club – which brings together an array of Qatari gentlemen with a penchant for fine watchmaking – Chopard is launching a 30-piece limited edition of its L.U.C watch, featuring a dual-time function built into the movement. The L.U.C GMT One Qatar Watch Club Edition adds an ideal finishing touch to a gentleman’s attire when crisscrossing the globe. In keeping with the fundamental spirit of the L.U.C collection, the L.U.C GMT One Qatar Watch Club Edition is an exceptional timepiece that is easy to use and appreciate on a day to day basis. A first crown positioned at 2 o’clock serves to adjust the date and local time, while the second crown at 4 o’clock controls the large baton-type hand tipped with a large black arrow and pointing to the second time zone. At 6 o’clock, this hand glides over the date aperture, a characteristic feature of L.U.C watches. Intended for discerning collectors, this model is issued in a limited edition of 30 watches, each of them unique thanks to the owner’s initials engraved on the case-back. A finely crafted integrated GMT calibre This complication is based on the Chopard Manufacture self-winding Calibre L.U.C 01.10-L endowed with a 60-hour power reserve. The ideally proportioned L.U.C GMT function is smoothly integrated into this finely crafted movement, a mechanical signature that perfectly embodies the horological mastery cultivated by Chopard. In accordance with the stringent quality standards upheld by Chopard Manufacture, the movement finishes meet the highest aesthetic norms. Chopard has decided to apply to it the finishing criteria of the most prestigious watch industry certifications. Its components are all chamfered and its bridges are adorned with Côtes de Genève. This meticulous finishing is visible through a transparent sapphire crystal case-back. Like all L.U.C watches equipped with a function indicating the seconds, the L.U.C GMT One Qatar Watch Club Edition is chronometer-certified by the COSC. This approach stems from the determination of Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, a passionate devotee of fine watchmaking who devotes great importance to the independent certification of chronometric precision and has chosen to make the latter one of the fundamental principles of L.U.C. watches ever since the creation of Chopard Manufacture in 1996. Comprehensive mastery of watchmaking skills Movement development, product design, gold smelting, case machining, movement components, traditional hand-crafted finishes, polishing, assembly, adjustment and movement quality control: all watch production operations are performed in-house by Chopard. The Maison applies them to the making of each watch in the L.U.C collection that pays homage to the company founder: Louis-Ulysse Chopard (L.U.C). Firmly attached to the pure lines and subtle details that made his watches so highly sought-after, Louis-Ulysse Chopard already knew how to adorn gentlemen with fine pocket-watches.

AUDEMARS PIGUET LAUNCHES A NEW ROYAL OAK PERPETUAL CALENDAR IN WHITE CERAMIC

S

wiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet enriches its collection of Royal Oak Perpetual Calendars with a new hand-finished white ceramic model. This new white ceramic Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar

follows on from a previously introduced black version, highly praised for being durable yet light, sporty and elegant. Challenging to master but virtually unscratchable, white ceramic resists high temperatures, thermal shocks and ageing. Numerous operations demanding patience and skill are required to achieve a uniform, compact and ultrahard material that can be machined and hand finished. The watch’s white ceramic bracelet, like the case, has been beautifully finished with alternating satin-brushed and polished surfaces and is complemented by a titanium AP folding clasp. The timepiece is endowed with a blue “Grande Tapisserie” dial, enriched with silver-toned day, date and month counters. The dial also features the astronomical moon indication at 6 o’clock, the week of the year transferred on the blue inner bezel and the leap year indication – pioneered by Audemars Piguet in 1955 – at 12 o’clock. White gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating complement the patterned dial. Housed in a 41 mm case, the watch’s selfwinding calibre is fully visible through the glareproofed sapphire crystal caseback.

Hublot Classic Fusion Orlinski AN EXCEPTIONAL MARRIAGE OF ART AND WATCHMAKING IN THE MOST SUBLIME MATERIALS

N

o fewer than six Classic Fusion Orlinski watches have been created as a continuation of the artistic and technological alliance between Richard Orlinski and Hublot, following on from the Aerofusion Chronograph and Tourbillon. At the

sculptor’s behest, this series has been designed and developed on a smaller scale to satisfy a new clientele. Symbolising the characteristic folds in his often monumental works, edges, bevels and facets have been miniaturised with horological precision to create mirror effects on the dial. The understated strap in matt black rubber creates an arresting contrast, all the more pronounced on four of the six models whose diamond-set cases create a jewellery effect. What better than the stone with the highest refractive index to reflect the mirror-polished finish typical of the plastic artist’s work? On four of the timepieces, the bezel – a dodecagon which has characterised the creative partnership since 2017 – is set with 54 diamonds and sits on a case which is either fully set with 210 diamonds or partially set with 112 diamonds. Free from precious stones, the other two watches exude a more subtle light, with the accent on the pure lines, the graduated light and shade of the materials, and the sharp-angled forms characteristic of Richard Orlinski’s sculptures. A lover of all kinds of art and a vocal advocate of its accessibility to all, Richard Orlinski creates intelligible works and installs them in open-sky settings (Courchevel, Deauville, etc.). Orlinski works to decompartmentalise the modes of artistic expression and challenge convention. As the creative force behind these six Classic Fusion Orlinski watches, here he addresses new audiences, women and lovers of timeless stones or sculpture. The Aerofusion Chronograph and Tourbillon attest to the harmonious relationship between watchmaking and art, conveying a subtle message. It makes as much sense to wear art on the wrist as jewellery.

TAG HEUER SHIFTS INTO HIGH GEAR WITH REVAMPED

CARRERA LADY TIMEPIECES The refined and feminine Carrera Lady watches have been emboldened with an elegant design, while staying true to the Carrera line’s daring personality and iconic heritage.

Elegant and enduring, the Carrera Lady timepiece features a new design that enhances the entire 36 mm collection. From bold colours to the improved readability of the dial, the revamped Carrera Lady timepieces, available with a quartz or automatic movement, deftly combine performance and style. With their feminine flair and understated sophistication, any one of the new models in the Carrera Lady 36 mm collection will make the ideal accessory for the discerning and confident modern urban woman. To capture the style and personality of the new Carrera Lady watches, the Swiss watchmaker arranged a photoshoot with model, actress and TAG Heuer Brand Ambassador Cara Delevingne. Fearless and feminine, Cara’s personality and reputation are a perfect complement to these contemporary products. Cara commented: “For me a watch is not only a fashion accessory, it’s also something that reflects who you are and your way of life. In that regard, I like my watch to be daring, bold, and noticeable. The first thing you notice when you look at the Carrera watches is the design, the lines, the elegance without being too classic. I really like the touch of colour, the stainless steel bracelet, and how you can wear them with different looks throughout the day”. Sophistication in the details A glance at the dial reveals refined indexes and hands. The dial is available in white mother-of-pearl, purple, blue, grey and black, and is perfectly legible thanks to its markedly pure design. A seconds scale is printed on the flange around the dial, and is surrounded by either a smooth or diamond-set bezel. A final detail that sets the new Carrera Lady wristwatches apart from their predecessors is the date window at 3 o’clock – the frame boasts an intriguing trapezoidal shape, as opposed to the square shape of the original. Polished and satin-finished style The 36 mm stainless-steel timepieces now feature curved lugs that are fastened to a brushed and polished stainless-steel bracelet, a calfskin strap or an alligator leather strap with a satin finish. The case size, coupled with the automatic movement, makes the Carrera Lady a contemporary watch that stands out from the avant-garde Swiss watchmaker’s other ladies’ timepieces.

24

WATC H E S & J E W E L L E RY

THE TAG HEUER CARRERA COLLECTION WAS ORIGINALLY INTRODUCED IN 1963

The 36 mm case is larger than those of the women’s watches that TAG Heuer generally creates, but is ideal for a statementmaking piece that is robust yet classy. These watches for elegant women are available with purple, taupe or grey alligator leather straps, while quilted calfskin straps in black or blue also give a feminine touch to the overall look. The models powered by an automatic movement are available with a taupe-coloured alligator leather strap or a stainless-steel bracelet. TAG Heuer chose this collection to present its new folding clasp for leather straps, which is thinner than previous models and gives the overall aesthetic of the watch a wonderfully refined appearance. The caseback of the quartz-powered models is stamped with the TAG Heuer logo and collection name, along with a cross-hatched pattern that serves as a nod to the Carrera line’s motor-racing heritage. Alternatively, the mechanical-movement counterparts feature a sapphire caseback that provides an unobstructed view of the automatic calibre within. Life in the fast lane The TAG Heuer Carrera collection was originally introduced in 1963. Its bonds with the world of motor racing continue to drive the line, which has become one of the brand’s most popular and well-known collections. The Carrera Lady line is no different – focus, drive and a daring attitude distinguish both the adventurers who race for a living and the woman who knows what she wants to achieve and won’t take her foot off the gas until she gets it. With this Carrera collection, women can wear a timepiece that has been created just for them without compromising on state-of-the-art innovation, stunning design and a rich heritage.

AUDEMARS PIGUET’S NEW MILLENARY FROSTED GOLD PHILOSOPHIQUE Inspired by the aesthetics of 17th-century single-hand timepieces

T

his design watch is a statement of creative freedom and free-spirited individuality. In defiance of the rush and frenzy of today’s world, the Millenary Frosted Gold Philosophique puts time on women’s side, its single hand defying contemporary conventions of time measurement. As François-Henry Bennahmias explains, “At Audemars Piguet, we have always charted our own course, following our firm convictions and starting our independent trends, even during times of crisis. We continue today with our new Millenary Philosophique. This watch takes a break from the rushing minutes of our world and invites you to set your own tempo.” This abstract watch has been meticulously hand-finished by our watchmakers, in the highest respect of Audemars Piguet’s traditions. The 18-carat pink or white gold case presents alternating satin brushing and Frosted Gold finishing, a technique Audemars Piguet owes to Florentine jewellery designer Carolina Bucci. The diamonddust effect it creates results from hours of meticulous microhammering. Adding a subtle touch of colour, the see-through caseback reveals the oscillating weight, which coloured plates recall the hand-crafted dimpled dial in shades of brown or blue. The single hour hand is polished and sand-blasted. Adding to the current hand-wound collection, this watch is equipped with a new selfwinding movement, calibre 3140. This movement is endowed with a patented mechanism which ticks the hand around the dial in an elliptical trajectory. The hour wheel directly corresponds with a transparent disc on the dial, on which the single hand is mounted. This enables the hand to follow a clear trajectory despite the elliptical case.

27

A Glimpse at History Audemars Piguet introduced its first Philosophique watch in 1982, in the midst of the quartz crisis. The advent of quartz shook the foundation of the watchmaking industry, spurring watchmakers to find innovative solutions to the ravages caused by the emergence of this new technology. The Manufacture responded by breaking mechanical records with its world’s thinnest perpetual calendar mechanism in 1978, as well as by releasing revolutionary mechanical watches combining tradition and avant-gardist design. Defying quartz, Audemars Piguet introduced its first handwound “Philosophique” watch in 1982, inviting wearers to question the notion of passing time. This model brought back to the beginning of time measurement devices, which were equipped with a single hour hand until the beginning of the 18th century to simplify energy transmission. By telling time philosophically and sentimentally, the Manufacture also liberated time from the constraints of the modern industry’s relentless quest for precision. The Philosophique reminded us that watches had been, and continue to be, worn first and foremost as social and emotional markers. Millenary: A Canvas for Creativity Since its establishment in 1875, Audemars Piguet has crafted mechanical watches for women, ranging from timeless classics to avant-garde artistic creations, all suited to the evolving nature of women’s lifestyles. Combining technical mastery, creative aesthetics, optimum ergonomics and refined finishing techniques, these creations have challenged expectations over the years, while honouring the highest level of Haute Horlogerie and gem-setting traditions.

28

WATC H E S & J E W E L L E RY

Since it first appeared in 1995, the Millenary has been a canvas for creativity with its elliptical case, eccentric dials and visible hand-wound movement. Inspired by architecture and art, this watch of contrasts intertwines technical savoir-faire and innovative design. While the collection was originally conceived for men, the first models for women made their appearance in 1998, becoming more prominent over the years. Since 2015, the collection has been exclusively designed for women presenting off-beat and multifaceted models endowed with a wide array of materials and finishing techniques, including chamfering, satin brushing and Frosted Gold finishing. The creativity of the Millenary collection can also be seen with the new 2019 Millenary Frosted Gold Aventurine. Its deep blue aventurine dial and seconds counter recall a star-lit sky. Aventurine glass was created in the 17th century thanks to a chance manipulation (“all’avventura”) in a Murano glass factory when copper filings were dropped into cooling molten glass, creating a constellation of sparkling particles. Today, this glass is obtained by introducing black copper oxide and cobalt, which colours the glass in blue. This hint of outer space is contained by the 18-carat white gold case with Frosted Gold finish on the case sides, bezel, inner bezel and lugs. The watch is complemented by a hand-made and hand-polished 18-carat white gold Polish mesh bracelet which adds a vintage touch, while dressing the wrist like a second skin.

Paris, vu du 26 It’s not a walk. Much less a stroll. Inspired by Paris, by its architecture and culture, Boucheron’s new high jewelry collection explores viewpoints, perspectives and heights. Some pieces rise to breathtaking heights in a reflection of the vast capital, such as this set made in the image of the Grand Palais seen from above. Other pieces have their feet firmly on the ground, as they capture and sublimate a light, shape or adornment. The cobblestones of Place Vendôme, for example, are depicted in a pattern of precious stones, which is spectacular, but everyday at the same time, familiar but disconcerting. Above all, this is 26 Place Vendôme, the heart of the Maison Boucheron, actually inspiring the creation of a gemstone as surreal as it is self-evident, utterly inexplicable yet crystal clear. Just like Paris in fact.

he body as an instrument of communication does not just mean that the mouth speaks, the hands mold or the feet move. We communicate even further on a non-verbal level by what we choose to cover ourselves with. For centuries, people have used the language of dress to express personal things such as ethnicity, race, class, gender but also larger social and political movements. Today, the issue of self-identification has become even more urgent. Everything we put on ourselves says something about us. It speaks about our social status, about our preferences, values, outlook, and also speaks about our attitude to the social context in which we are. I call it dress communication. Communication begins long before we start talking. It takes less than a second for people to make the first conclusions about the person next to them. Our appearance is an extremely effective means of non-verbal communication. Just as we choose words and intonations to convey different thoughts, we should choose clothes, shoes, hairstyles and accessories. It’s called style.

34

FAS H I O N

Every day we make a choice but as usually without awareness. Often we dress up to be “matching” with different circumstances - place of work, status or environment. Dress communication involves a change of focus: from dressing to impress others to dressing up to express yourself. Dress communication and personal style begin when we know who we are and what we want to say to the world. When we know who we are and able to make a list of characteristics of our own personality. Then we choose clothes not based on the principle of “suits shape of my body”, but on the principle of “what this clothing will tell about myself ”. Then we dress not to conform to status, but to express inner status through clothing. And these are two big differences. We always have a choice: attend a formal event in office pants or in an evening dress. We may not want to spend money on special clothing to wear it only once. But when we come to “black tie” in office attire, we do not show that we are non-conformists. We show our attitude to the organizers and the community. And it is disrespectful.

Every item of clothing, style, texture, fabric, color can speak. If we are aware of this, we can make our appearance work for us. Like any kind of communication, dress communication can have different goals - to pay attention or to stay invisible, to emphasize the seriousness of intentions or to add lightness to the image, to show that we are conservative or vice versa progressive.

Another question is self-expression: what will be your evening dress? With an open back, a long train and rich details? Is it possible with hyperbolized volume sleeves and avant-garde print? Maybe classic black, straight silhouette? Each different outfit tell something completely different, and in combination with makeup, hairstyle, shoes and accessories, we will show who we are. Because in reality we are what we wear.

Not the type of figure determines what to wear. This is determined by the message we want to convey to the world. Fashion provides us with tools for the dress communication, and the way we pick and use, creates our personal style.

First impression – your outfit, next one – definitely mind. Today, fashion gives us all the tools we need to show our mind and character in our clothes. Shine Bright & Be The One!

BLUE SALON LAUNCHES TRUNK SHOW FOR K BY KAPROL BRAND

I

n a distinguished ceremony at Blue Salon, The Turkish Brand K by Kaprol, Launched its latest Trunk Show for its collection of caftans SS 19. The event was attended by Mr. Fawaz Al Idrisi, CEO of Abu Issa Holding Group, Arzu Kaprol Fashion Designer of the

Brand, and a crowd of media professionals and also lovers of Fashion & Beauty. A group of specialists in the field of fashion also attended. The audience enjoyed being informed of the stages of composition and the unique combinations of these wonderful Spring – Summer Collection 2019. For the SS’19 collection the designer preferred materials like silk, taffeta, cotton, and cashmere as her various canvases. Each design is fashioned as versatile pieces, able to transform from day to night outfits, each considered individual, functional works of art. The kaftan can be worn to the office, to lunches, dinner dates, special nights and even to accentuate swimwear at the beach. If you desire, it can even find a place on your walls, enjoyed by everyone at home. K by Kaprol brings the kaftan in all of its grandeur into our present-day lives. Bestowed upon the world by the Mesopotamians, the kaftan is now embarking upon a new journey from turkey to the international market under the care of Arzu Kaprol and her unique, inimitable interpretation. Over the centuries, from the Ottomans to the Persian Empire, India to Russia, and Mexico to the far east, existing equally under the auspices of kings, princes, emperors and the common man, the kaftan became one’s second skin. Customarily worn long-sleeved and ending at the ankles, the kaftan’s practical nature is a barrier against the icy winds of winter and a shelter from the fiery heat of summer. At times a symbol of luxury, wealth and elaboration and other times the simple outfit of the market salesperson, the kaftan has extended beyond a mere garment into a legendary item.
Influenced by the centuries-old

odyssey of the kaftan and the emotions it has carried around the world, Arzu Kaprol demonstrates flawless craftsmanship under the new line “K by Kaprol,” sharing elegant and ornate kaftans with her many devotees.

resh from graduating from the school of arts, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and wining the impressive ‘W Doha Award’ for best fashion collection, Noor Aburish has ensured to carry on that winning streak momentum with the launch of her much anticipated comprehensive collection. As a Qatar based designer but with designs born out of the desire to speak to the international market, the Noor Aburish brand can be described as an ‘upscale contemporary ready-to-wear’ women’s label. The brand’s designer describes the underlining philosophy of the brand as, “Seeking to empower the wearer, so she feels bold, in-charge and ready to take on a challenge. Just stylishly!” From designing from a young age, 23-year-old Aburish forged her way into the industry using her stylistic flair, progressive vision and innate passion as the driving force to kindle inspirations for her initiatory 30-piece collective that threads through hints of Aburish’s design aesthetics of masculine inspired tailoring. With Aburish drawing inspiration from what her mother’s wardrobe looked like in the 80’s, the debut collection titled Le Chant, is thus aptly named in homage to her and presenting at least 15 looks that are stylishly beautiful, powerful yet sophisticated, and seemingly timeless garments that are impeccably tailored. The collection is heavy on playing with proportions, from fitted blouses with statement voluminous sleeves, double-breasted blazers that can be paired with micro skirts, and exaggerated fuchsia organza bows seen on one-shoulder cocktail dress. The separates within the collection certainly establish the fun nature of an 80’s throwback wardrobe, but also garners the attention of fashion conscious individuals with offerings of versatile staples with a masculine twist. Inspired by the strong women Aburish has been surrounded by, the hallmark style of sharp tailoring and sculptural details are apparent within the precision cuts of the collections key white power suit that comes with a ‘V’ waistline pants matched with boxy suit jacket with architectural shoulder pads. The collection is composed in a minimalist palette of blush pinks, signature blacks, and artic whites, but also carries a pop of playful hue of hot fuchsia, to emanate confidence. Today, for those who are looking to step outside the standard cocktail outfit options, the Noor Aburish brand seeks to continually offer bold, confident styles that have accentuating references to fashion history but with a contemporary silhouette. Aburish has certainly captured the attention of the ready-to-wear world and even more so, this collection has set precedence for future lines, including plans of venturing into menswear.

JHOE LINA Couture

fa sh ion desig ner

Jhoe Lina, a name synonymous to classic and elegance. Born with the passion for making dresses and creating lavish designs. Filipino fashion designer Jhoe Lina couture gown was planted, created and bloomed where he had worked more than 15 years of exposure to Arabian art, culture, fashion and history. Since its inception in the Qatari fashion industry in 2013, keen eyes can easily distinguish a commercially designed garment from a detail-oriented usually hand-made beading, embroidery and tailoring which were carefully done by talented artisans from India, Nepal and Philippines, who are quite known for their crafts. And this is where Jhoe Lina Couture gown stand out from the rest. With my first collection, I was inspired by one of the amazing architectural structure here in Qatar. I have immediately thought of baroque pattern and re imagine to push more for one-of-a kind collection. I decided to add my Wedgewood dinner plate collection that have this tiny little figure of Greek people. Jhoe Lina added as with my second collection, it was inspired by the 1920’s what I love in this time is the style. The name sake brand has its eyes on the future and expand with more variety of woman cloths like traditional Arabic dress Abaya, Jalabias and Kaftan. Furthermore, “we will venture in shoes, bags and accessories” a teaser which Jhoe Lina would surly make everyone’s eyes glow with interest on the day to comes.

Your bodyweight is enough to develop a basic or elite level of strength

H E A LT H & F I T N E SS

By Richard Anthony Palmer

EXERCISING TIPS T H I N G S YO U S H O U L D D O M O R E OF T E N

Static/Eccentric exercises for upper Body and Core.

Tip for weighing yourself.

Everyone thinks to develop your upper body and core strength it is done by doing thousands of reps and lifting the heaviest set of dumbbells you can find. When in fact you don’t have to touch any weights your bodyweight is enough to develop a basic or elite level of strength.

A lot of people put themselves under some self induced press when it comes to weighing themselves. Some don’t do it enough some people do it too much, so I’m going to give you some tips on what you I think you should be doing that best suits you. So first all of all you need to decide on what your goal is, is it weight lost/weight gain, are you just maintaining, are you competing in a competition that requires you to be a certain weight.

Exercises such as holding High or Low plank, & hollow body hold for upto 2mins will give you good core strength. (When performed correctly I must add). Examples of upper body bodyweight exercises you can perform eccentric to help develop strength, eccentric pull ups, press ups & tricep dips. Lowering yourself in the direct of gravities pull will not only help you develop strength & muscle but will help strength in neves and ligaments around the working area. Stretching Stretching is probably skipped part of exercise but one of the most important, skipping stretching is like putting no oil in your car, the engine will start to grind then seize up then stall, it happens in reverse with the body, first the seizing up then maybe grinding and then the stalling (lose the ability to lengthen that muscle). PROS Reduces the chances of injury. Improves performance Increases in range of motion Improve performance. Mobility v flexibility Mobility is strength in a range of motion at a muscle joint without restrictions or discomfort. Flexibility is length of a muscle.

If your weight goal is weight loss/weight gain or competing in comp, then weighing yourself everyday maybe once more is the option for you BUT here are the PROS and CONS. PROS • You’ll know straight away whether what you doing is working or not so no surprises after waiting a week or 2. • Closely monitoring what’s going on and identifying trends can boost your confidence. • Consent reminder of your goal. • You learn to hold yourself accountable. • You become more aware of your body. • You might eat less junk food. CONS • Many things can effect the number that appears on the scales • Weighing yourself is very much for the cool headed people and understand how body weigh works. Some people may trigger anxiety/panic and you don’t see the right number will affect your day and could start to lead to depression or making changes to the nutrition that don’t actually need to happen and then eating disorders. • Could become an obsession. If your goal is to maintain weight, weekly or fortnightly should be enough. The best time to way yourself is first thing in the morning and to do it at the same time of the day if you do, do it everyday and more than one a day.

Rawane Tahtouh is a Lebanese registered health specialist and a lifestyle coach with over 7 years of experience in the field. She has consistently worked in nearly every aspect of nutrition where her passion for health has given her the opportunity to work across several organizations and famous restaurants across Lebanon where she has provided her expertise to a range of teams and people. Rawane has spent her career training and auditing staff about food safety, handling and much more in hopes to make a difference across Lebanon. Rawane uses her skills in nutrition to help people improve their relationship with food and their bodies so they can show up for what matters most in their life. Currently, Rawane is a food safety consultant at Zaroob Lebnen restaurant and is a clinical nutritionist at Bou Chabke policlinic in Dbayeh where she provides consultations to patients and creates customized lifestyle plans for them. Rawane holds a B.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics from the Lebanese American University in Lebanon where she also minored in Psychology. She is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Food Safety and Quality Management from Notre Dame University - Louaize (NDU). Rawane’s expertise go beyond the health industry, as she is also a very well-known actress. Her first appearance on television was in Banat Ammi W Benti W Ana on Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI), years later she appeared on “Ishk Al Nisaa”. Rawane’s ability to play various roles has been recognized by the Murex Dor Awards – where she was nominated 3 times – which recognizes achievements in the domain of art in Lebanon, the Arab region and the world. Some of her past work includes: Amir el Layl, Blahza and Habibi el Ladoud which have appeared on popular Lebanese channels such as MTV, LBC and MBC4.

Q. How did you decide to become a health specialist, did someone inspire you or was it your own decision?

Q. Please tell us more about your special nutrition programs

Since I was in school, I was heath oriented and more aware about well-being than any of my schoolmates. It’s just came to me as an idea and I developed it over the years, and so I decided to major in it at university. Becoming a health specialist made me feel that I can help others by guiding them to reach their health goals and that was what kept me going all those years, until today. I genuinely love nutrition, and I am currently writing my thesis in food safety and quality management.

The ‘’Feel Good Look Good menu’’ is a new healthy menu that can be found at W Doha restaurants (Market by Jean Georges and W Café) that include detox, ketogenic, vegetarian and light items that support different type of diets that guests are adopting. We also developed a healthy section in the breakfast buffet to kick start your day on a positive note. Our newest dishes include a delicious keto pizza, that also includes a vegetarian option. We even extended our health menu items for in-room dining guests to enjoy in the comfort of their rooms.

Q. What kind of opportunities did your passion for health give you in your career?

Q. Do you prefer to work with individuals or corporations such as a restaurant and what is the difference?

When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. My passion for health opened up a wide range of opportunities for me and allowed me to grow my career path. Earlier this year, it lead me to become the Wellness Ambassador of W Doha and gave me the chance to develop health workshops that cover different topics, create healthy menus, and answer guests needs for more health-conscious food options.

I have worked with individuals during one on one consultations in my clinic and also with larger groups and corporations such as hotels, restaurants and companies. I can say that they are completely different experiences but I still enjoy them both. Individual consultations allow me to focus on one-on-one interactions and customize my lifestyle guidance according to the person’s needs and life choices. Whereas, group workshops allow me to be creative and have more interactions as people tend to open up and share their own experiences with everybody around, which in return generates positive team spirit and connections with each other.

“

Becoming a health specialist made me feel that I can help others by guiding them to reach their health goals Q. What is relation between Nutrition, Diet and Psychology? The combination of those three ingredients is what makes the perfect recipe for a better quality of life. Nutrition focuses on how diseases, conditions, and problems can be prevented or reduced with a healthy diet. There are several types of diets that can be adopted depending on each case, such as weight loss, weight gain, vegetarian, high-protein, vegan, detox, etc. Similarly, a healthy lifestyle requires a stable psychological status. Several psychological problems are related to unhealthy behavior like insomnia, negative body image, emotional eating, bulimia, anorexia and anxiety. All these factors can be harmful to the body and prevent a person from achieving a healthy weight and lifestyle balance. Q. As we know, you are also a very well known actress; does your nutrition knowledge help in any way in your career? Acting and dietetics are interchangeable in a way that they both support each other for my career. Acting allowed me to have an influence on society, to represent brands and be the image of several companies and to make an impact about health awareness. Also, as a dietitian it has always helped me regulate my eating patterns and my actors friends to regulate and maintain a healthy lifestyle even during long hours of shooting and stressful work conditions. Being an actress helped me connect more with people and communicate in an easy way. I’m very comfortable talking in public and being in front of a large audience which in return gives me more confidence about myself and makes me feel at home around guests that I had just met in a workshop. Q. What made you want to partner with W Doha to be their Wellness Ambassador? It was a collaboration that I couldn’t pass up! It was a chance for me to combine some of my favorite things in life as well as my skills and knowledge as an actress and dietitian and showcase it for the first time in Doha. It also gave me the chance to partner with a well-known lifestyle hotel that is considered a culinary destination.

94

H E A LT H & F I T N E SS

Q. Can you tell us more about the monthly Wellness Journey you created with W Doha Hotel & Residences? The idea was to keep the workshops fun, fresh and exciting, so each month we will tackle a new health topic that our audience will find the most beneficial and they can apply in real life. The workshop is a blend of several wellness sessions and we try to make them as eclectic as possible. They will include a talk about different lifestyle topics, live cooking demos with W Doha’s executive chef, a fitness session with our trainer and a beauty session. The goal of the workshops is to make it ‘an experience’ each month. Q. What was the inspiration behind the healthy menus you developed at W Café and Market by Jean Georges, and what factors do you usually take into consideration when choosing the dishes? I wanted to create a menu that suits and satisfies all body types and needs. My focus was to create keto, vegetarian, detox, and light items. We also created grab and go items, healthy snack boxes and detox juices that are convenient to take to work, to the gym or when you’re simply in a rush. I always focus my ideas on what people need and what fits naturally with their lifestyle. I really want guests to be able to enjoy food that fits their lifestyle needs and still tastes good at the same time.

I really want guests to be able to enjoy food that fits their lifestyle needs and still tastes good at the same time

Q. What inspires you the most in your career and how do you develop it? What inspires me most is the fact that I can help people have a better quality of life, support them emotionally and make a difference. Many of my patients have described becoming healthy as a life-changing phase when they become more comfortable with their bodies, their sleeping pattern, and their stress and confidence level. That’s what gives me the satisfaction. I always develop my self by being up to date to all new science research, projects and training sessions. Most of all the experience and interaction with people is what motivate me and help me to develop my skills and knowledge.

MASSAGE

IS A TREATMENT

IN THE HANDS OF A PROFESSIONAL The services of massage therapists are in demand today as never before, thanks to the trending of healthier lifestyle. Thanks to benefits such as relaxation, weight loss, wrinkle reduction and immune system boost which help also overcome many diseases, the demand for massage is experiencing a real boom. What to look for: how to understand whether a massage therapist is a good massage or is it better not to return after the first session? The hands of a massage therapist are his tool . An experienced massage therapist, upon feeling your body will immediately find problem areas. The movements of the masseur should not be erratic, they should be confident and clear. The massage master enters into energy contact with the patient and brings him into a state of harmony. There should be a calm feeling of confidence in the massage therapist. If during and especially after the session you feel severe pain, do not continue. This massage can harm your health. ONE OF THE SIGNS OF A GOOD MASSAGE IS THE HEAT SPREADING OVER THE BODY. Is massage still a treatment or psychology? When is massage necessary and when is it contraindicated? Above all else, massage is a treatment. Even though there many types of massage around the world, they can be divided into two main systems: European (without special effects on reflex zones) and Eastern (with effects on biologically active points). Depending on the indications (symptoms?), the former or that latter can be prescribed. The effect on biologically active points is very effective for eliminating pain and correcting diseases directly related to dysfunctions of the central or peripheral nervous system. Neurosis, fatigue, sleep disturbances, irritability, headache - these syndromes are successfully eliminated by competent exposure to biologically active points.

98

H E A LT H & F I T N E SS

In addition, massage allows you to achieve lasting and stable results in patients with hypertension, heart pain, circulatory disorders, especially in combination with other methods. MYTHS ABOUT MASSAGE Self-massage. Highly inadvisable. Massage should be done by a qualified, experienced professional. Saving on massage services is not worth the risk, it is better to turn to professionals. ANOTHER MYTH: A HEALTHY PERSON DOES NOT NEED MASSAGE. Massage is useful to any person - for the prevention of diseases, relieve fatigue or emotional discharge, not just a mean to solve occurring issues. You can also often hear that with osteochondrosis you cannot do massage. But it is known that with the help of a certain technique of acupressure in Chinese medicine, it is even possible to completely cure osteochondrosis. Massage supposedly always causes a pleasant sensation. However, during a therapeutic massage, the patient may experience tolerable pain and some discomfort. During the massage, an experienced specialist diagnoses health based on a person’s response when exposed to biologically active points. The sensation of pain at certain points indicates different health problems. What massage to advise to whom? Massage is recommended for everyone - both adults children, and the elderly. First of all, massage is necessary for healthy people to maintain good health and the prevention of various diseases. We can safely say that massage has the widest range indications, however it is important to competently approach the selection of the procedure and its performance. Nonetheless, massage therapies should not be considered as a replacement for professional medical consultation, especially in the case of various health problems. It is always advisable to seek medical help before or in conjunction with massage therapies.

Special weekly promotions such as Vive La Noche (Long live the night), Chica’s night, Paella Night and Tapa Locas all of which to be launched in July, aim to create a gastronomic experience that captures the essence of what makes Spanish cuisine unique. The two-time Michelin-starred Chef has two venues in Madrid namely La Cabra and Gaytán and is one of the youngest rising stars in the Spanish culinary scene. He is adamant to bring Doha some of his country’s flavors, intertwined with his signature flare. My vision is to have everyone here experience an authentic cuisine from Spain, one that I am personally passionate about.”

The revamped restaurant offers traditional recipes from the culinary hotspots of the Iberian Peninsula

The restaurant’s unique décor featuring a Picasso-inspired brick wall, Spanish inspired “Mercado” (marketplace) displaying various Spanish-sourced products, and a Chalkboard wall served as conduit for the Spanish sensation. Added Cluster General Manager of the Kempinski Marsa Malaz, Raghu Menon: “We are ecstatic to have Javier steer El Faro with his team in the reopening of this iconic Spanish restaurant in Doha. We are confident the restaurant will be the place to be for traditional Spanish food and ambience.”

 Eating Etiquette Tips by: Dr.Marie Abou Rached

When and how to eat the Bread? The bread course is the first course to start with it. The bread plate is placed on the left side of each person. 1. The bread course is a light course, so it will be enough to have two or 3 pieces. 2. To do not get confused which bread plate is yours, or which glasses are yours, follow these tips below: a) remember the word “BMW” that stands for bread, meal and drinks in order from left to the right. b) make the “ok” sign with both hands. A letter “b” will show on your left hand (“b” stands for bread) and letter “d” on your right hand (which stands for drinks). 3. If someone used your bread plate, place the bread on the left corner of your dinner plate. 4. It’s preferable to choose the piece of bread that our hands touch it in the basket. It’s unappropriate to molest the bread. 5. In case the bread is not cut into slices, it’s better to hold the piece of bread with the napkin and cut a small slice to eat it. 6. Place some butter in the bread plate with the serving knife, then reput back the serving knife to the butter dish. We take a piece of bread by tearing it off by our fingers, we don’t use the knife to cut the bread into pieces. In case oil is served, we spoon out a serving of oil in our bread plate. After finishing the bread course, we place the knife on the bread plate. The sharp side of the knife has to face the center of the plate.

How to eat the bowl of soup? Soup is the second course to be served. The soup is served from the left side. If the soup is hot, we don’t blow on it, we let it cool in the bowl. (you don’t go wrong if you stir gently with the spoon to make the soup cooler). Avoid dipping bread in the soup. Do not get the bowl of soup up to your face to get the last bit of soup. After finishing your soup, it’s recommended to rest the spoon on saucer under the bowl if available. If not, place the spoon in the bowl itself.
