How to make veggies part of snack time... and why it’s important
As a mum of three, I know how much of a struggle it can be to get kids to eat their veggies, especially when they are trying out new tastes, textures and flavours.
Babies naturally have a preference for sweet tastes, so starting early and making vegetables a part of their daily snacks can lay the foundation for healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.
The good news is that research shows it can take at least 15–20 tries before a child accepts a new food, so don’t worry if your little one doesn’t love a vegetable straight away. Every
single exposure counts—whether through sight, touch, or taste—and the more they experience, the more likely they are to tolerate it and eventually like it.
Once your baby reaches 12 months, snacks become an important part of their diet, helping to fill the nutritional gaps between breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Snacks are a great opportunity to give your child extra nutrients that support growth, energy levels and brain function while ensuring they are getting enough key vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium and fibre. Snacks are also
an excellent way to increase the diversity of their gut microbiome, which supports immune health— this is especially important during ‘sniffly nose’ season.
The best part? Vegetables and fruits are really inexpensive, especially when you buy in season and look out for the weekly offers at your local Dunnes Stores.
