Alumni Weekend Benediction

T

he Headmaster has asked me to kick start the denouement of the organized greetings and acknowledgments so that everyone might relax and follow the wise dictum of A.E. Housman, which encourages us all to remember that “malt does more than Milton can to justify God’s ways to man.” So let the games begin soon, but keep in mind that here, in this yard, on this acreage, many of us became men who came here as boys and women as girls. We can speak with a vocabulary known only to us about our own pantheon that coalesced during our adenoidal, bewildering teenage years where, across the stage of our own Parthenon, the Barn, walked Tony, Loy, Stu, Doc, Buff, Ruoss, Blaisdell, Gill, Munger, Pettley, Norm and the exquisite Anne Hines, Thacher, Ripley, Stanton, Jurgie, Saltus, Kumler, and so many more who found themselves here at the same time. Our parents, the trunk of the family sedan now empty, drove away and left us here, alone, terrified and at the mercy of the fickle, awkward masculine (sort of) winds that blew through the quad or the horrific night sessions in the bomb shelter. hat a wonderful gathering of Dunn alums, families, faculty, and friends! The highlights of the weekend were the class of ’64’s celebration of their 50th reunion, and the celebration of the Learning Strategies Program 40th anniversary and Nancy Roome. The ‘64s gathered together Friday night, and then on Saturday evening shared their stories and memories with all who were in attendance – they demonstrated great camaraderie and spirit. A video presentation featuring Nancy Roome and the history of the LS Program was another highlight of Saturday evening’s reception and dinner.

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company in Buellton was the site for the Friday night reception; approximately 60 alums joined the festivities. There was great representation from the classes of 1974 and 2004. Many years separated their attendance at Dunn, but the experiences they enjoyed had countless common themes; two generations of Orricks were present! The venue was perfect and the company fantastic. Saturday began with an extraordinary brunch in the Mary Dunn Jackson Dining Hall and was followed by the annual Jurgensen Golf Tournament, wine tasting in Los Olivos, campus tours conducted by student tour guides, and the volleyball, baseball and lacrosse games. The Saturday reception and dinner at the home of Mike and Maura Beck was excellent. Attendance, in excess of 125 people, was the largest ever for Alumni Weekend. During the evening presentation, Bill DuBois ’80 received the Alumni of the Year Award for his dedicated service to the school, and Nyuol Matioktong ’10 was recognized as the Young Alum of the Year. Dunn students provided beautiful music, and Juan Pina ’74 regaled the gathering with song. Although the weather was a bit chilly, the warm feelings made it a beautiful evening shared by the Dunn community. On Sunday morning, most members of the class of ’64 enjoyed breakfast in the dining hall. The group speculated on how their classmates would have

7 Our parents left us subject to the projector that almost always melted the film–the end of another movie night in the dining hall– but still the viscous phantasmagoria on the screen always made us cheer. You know, the dining hall where the Strawberry Alarm Clock played their one hit wonder Incense and Peppermint for the prom when all the girls from the Great Beyond were sleeping in the Bomb Shelter and how that very thought was nuclear in our own dreams all through that long night. 8. reacted to the incredible food had it been served 50 years ago – the general consensus was, “We would have gotten up and attended breakfast!” Alumni Weekend was a fantastic celebration enjoyed by all. We look forward to next year’s gathering and the recognition of the 5s and 0s. Mark your calendars now so that you can join us April 24, 25 and 26, 2015. No one else knows this but us. We were changed in all the rooms of the school, the playing fields and the nights when the stars were up like no place other than the Canary Islands or some far outpost of pristine air and villages lit only by fire. Now we have a few beers, and tell lies that we have come to believe are true, maybe drudge up old grudges or rekindle what seemed to be dead embers. It is, after all, Eliot’s April- “the cruelest month, mixing memory and desire” reminding us of what we were and smacking us in the mug with what we are. So , if I may, I’ll end whatever this is with a poem by Yeats called A Drinking Song Wine comes in at the mouth And love comes in at the eye That is all we shall know for truth Before we grow old and die. I lift my glass, I look at you, And I sigh – Ralph Lowe ‘70

As I reflect, no words can describe how deeply honored I am to have graduated from Dunn. The more the years passed, the more magical my time there has become.

(Tomashu) Kenyatta Jones, PhD sent this note: Currently, I am living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I am finishing up a Postdoctoral Fellowship here at UNC. I finished my residency this March 31 so I am extremely excited. Next steps, I hope to be in an administrative position at a research university or research hospital. It was Mr. Holmes and his family, the Loy’s, Judycki, Michael Chapman and the Dunn School community that inspired me to do some great work and I am grateful to everyone.

I attended this past alumni weekend to pay tribute to the class of ‘74. It was a love fest! I can’t wait to spend time with the class of ‘75 next year.

ill DuBois ’80, and Nyuol Matioktong ’10 were honored as the Alumnus of the Year and Young Alumnus of the Year during Dunn’s Alumni Weekend. Bill has been a member of the Board of Trustees from 2008 to 2014 and was the Board Chair in 2010 and 2011. He has been instrumental in the ongoing development of the school’s financial structure; he was also a member of the faculty at Dunn from 2003 to 2006. Bill made good on the comment he made during his 1980 Senior Chapel talk saying, “I will return to Dunn someday in an official capacity.” We are tremendously grateful for all that he has contributed to Dunn School! Nyuol is an extraordinary young man who graduated from Duke University in May. While a student at Dunn, he began SELF Sudan, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building schools in Nyuol’s home country of South Sudan. The philosophy of SELF is to partner with South Sudanese villages to build schools and empower their communities by helping them develop their local economic potential. He will continue his education at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa.

40 Years of Learning Strategies

In 1973, Head of School Bill Webb flew to New York to interview Nancy Roome. He needed a learning specialist to establish an innovative program for talented students who had reading challenges. After meeting Nancy, he knew he had found the woman for the job. Today, under the leadership of Alice Berg and Leslie Vincent, Dunn’s Learning Strategies Program is an international model for learning support within a rigorous college-prep school. To honor Nancy Roome – who is 92 years old – and to thank the learning specialists who have shared their passion and talent over four decades, students who were part of the program sent letters of gratitude which were compiled into a scrapbook and video for Nancy. Her daughters were on hand during Alumni Weekend in her stead. Here’s to another 40 wonderful years!
