Cabinet of Curiosities

In the heart of our Gin Palace distillery is a glorious, locked cabinet where Ms. Lesley Gracie, our original creator and Master Distiller, stores an array of vials containing all manner of experiments and botanical elixirs, many of which are derived from plants grown in our own distillery hothouses.

Every so often, Lesley will release some of these creations into the world for our curious HendriCk’s lovers to try….

All of our releases from our Cabinet of Curiosities start out as HendriCk’s original and become limited release gins based around the world, inspired by our Master Distiller and her adventures.

Each limited release gin tells a unique story. In 2019 we released Midsummer Solstice, a Gin that celebrated the height of summer, and in 2020 Lunar followed, where we captured the night sky inspired by the darkness of our unique location in Girvan, Ayrshire.

In 2022, we set sail and embraced our Scottish coastline with the third cabinet release, Neptunia. Now Lesley has turned her attention to the wild garden at the Gin Palace, and the pollinators that help make our garden bloom, with the latest release, Flora Adora.

With the Cabinet of Curiosities we innovate in a way that captures the imaginations and allows HendriCk’s lovers old and new, to go on a journey with us, providing them with new and exciting liquids to taste, whilst keeping our range small and exciting. This is the reason why, when a new release appears, another will fade away, with each expression remaining available for two years as a limited release. We hope that you, and your customer, will enjoy and celebrate our current range made up of HendriCk’s Original, HendriCk’s Neptunia, and the newly released HendriCk’s Flora Adora.

Our heavily awarded Hills & Harbour Gin delivers a vibrant and smooth taste of the forests and coastline of Galloway, and is elegantly packaged in an innovative and eco-friendly bottle.

With local Noble Fir needles and Bladderwrack Seaweed, it leads with juniper and is balanced with hints of forest fir, tropical fruit, citrus spice, tangy sherbet and a subtle scent of the shore.

We’ve been crafting our award-winning whisky at the Highland Park Distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney since 1798. Now, over 220 years later, we are one of the ten oldest working distilleries in Scotland. Age, experience and respect for tradition may define our whisky but it’s Orkney that differentiates it. Something magic happens here and we call it A Wild Harmony.

It’s not just the influence of the finest sherry seasoned oak casks on our whisky as it matures, it’s the salty sea winds that batter Orkney’s rugged coastlines, the intensely floral character of our treeless but heatherrichpeat, and the fiercely independent Viking spirit that drives us. INGREDIENTS (Serves 12)

70ml Monkey Shoulder bottle

90ml Sugar syrup

30ml of Angostura bitters

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove 100ml of Monkey Shoulder from your bottle.

2. Enjoy this spare whisky as you like!

3. Pour Sugar syrup back into the bottle.

4. Add Angostura bitters back into the bottle.

5. Replace the cork and shake.

6. Don’t forget to label your bottle ‘Lazy Old Fashioned’, chill and then pop in your chimp for serving!

7. To serve, add ice to your glass and pour 60ml over, and enjoy (lazily)!

Crushed Cranberry Cosmo

Ingredients

40ml Discarded Grape Skin

Vodka

25ml Cranberry juice

15ml Lime juice

1 tsp. Triple Sec

Leftover Cranberry sauce

Method

Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake.

Serve Double strain into a coupe glass.

Banana Colada Spirtz

Ingredients

50ml Discarded Banana Peel Rum

25ml Condensed Coconut Milk

5-6 Pineapple Chunks

50ml Prosecco

Method

Add all ingredients to a shaker. Shake with ice.

Double strain into coupe.

Making Condensed Coconut Milk

Add 200g coconut milk & 300g caster sugar to a pan. Heat and reduce liquid to roughly 100ml.

Broken Berry Americano

Ingredients

50ml Discarded Sweet Cascara

Vermouth

25ml Campari

50ml Ginger ale

75ml Soda

Handful overripe mixed berries

Method

Add the vermouth, Campari and berries to a shaker. Muddle, then add ice and give it a quick stir.

Serve

Fine strain into a highball glass over ice.

Add ginger ale and soda. Gently stir and serve.

Family business, Thatchers, have been crafting cider for four generations at their home, Myrtle Farm. We caught up with Head Cider Maker, Richard Johnson, to find out about what it takes to create the perfect cider.

What does a day at Thatchers look like?

Every day is different, and that’s one of the great joys of being a cider maker. From walking through the orchards where we grow our apples; making our cider; to researching and innovating with the creation of new styles.

What are the aspirations for Thatchers future?

We just love making cider, and seeing our customers enjoy our range - whether that’s a new fruit cider, a traditional apple cider or indeed alcohol-free Zero. So we’ll always be keeping our eye on new trends, on what consumers are asking for, and importantly using our expertise gained over four generations to keep on doing what we do, and that’s creating really good tasting ciders.

How could Thatchers potentially change the cider industry?

The cider market needs to be an exciting place, cider drinkers are always looking for something new and interesting. Our most recent Thatchers Fusion has been a game changer in pubs and bars. A three in one font that serves three amazing fruit ciders - Cloudy Lemon, Blood Orange and Dark Berry - creates theatre and intrigue as the cider and flavour hit the glass as one when dispensed.

What do you do differently than other cider brands?

It’s, without doubt, the dedication to taste and to quality of each and every cider that is made at Myrtle Farm. No cider leaves the farm until it is perfect - from our flagship Thatchers Gold, our cloudy Haze, to our brand new Blood Orange, it’s important that we create ciders that people enjoy, and want to drink.

What motivates and inspires Thatchers to continue creating and inventing excellent drinks?

The Thatchers family has been making cider here at Myrtle Farm since 1904- that’s four generations, and, in fact, our fifth generation are now working in the business too. And to think that the family has been perfecting its craft here, at the very same Somerset farm, over all that time, is so inspiring.
