Jewels by Giuliano are among the most highly desired in the world of antiques. A protégé of Alessandro Castellani, Carlo Giuliano travelled from Italy to London, and after establishing the London branch for Castellani, he opened his own atelier in Britain.
Giuliano brought his own unique focus to jewellery of the late 19th Century. Experimentation with enamel gained Giuliano a global reputation for the delicacy of his work. The use of black and white enamel in combination was a trademark style. The use of simple gems to accentuate the design of a jewel was common. Giuliano, like Castellani, experimented with ancient motifs and designs from antiquity. Giuliano focused on inspiration from the Renaissance, producing delicate jewels with fine details that were often as beautiful on the back as on the front. Carlo’s sons, Carlo and Arthur, continued, until 1914, with the tradition of designing highly desired jewels inspired by antiquity and the Renaissance.

Among the most collectible and desirable of jewels in the world, the works of Castellani and Giuliano are central to jewellery history. Fortunato Pio Castellani (1793-1865), and his sons, Alessandro, and Augusto, were based in Rome in the 19th century. The house of Castellani used inspiration from ancient Etruscan, Roman, and Egyptian sources to bring vitality to their jewels. The image of intertwined serpents and a pair of wings, the caduceus, is a classic symbol of mythical messengers, and was familiar to ancient Egyptian and Greek cultures. For a similar hair ornament by Castellani, see the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, New York. (Featured on page 106 of the Jewelry volume of The Cooper-Hewitt Museum, Smithsonian Illustrated Library of Antiques, and also on pages 131 and 186 of Soros & Walker’s, Castellani and Italian Archaeological Jewelry). Amphorae, ancient wine jug shapes, and mystical animal forms featured extensively in Castellani jewels. Castellani rediscovered ancient metalworking techniques, and used the methods in unique and intricate jewels offered to 19th Century collectors. Castellani jewels, with their enduring beauty, remain a high priority for collectors around the world.

As a passenger on the Titanic, Mrs. Astor survived the sinking, her husband having gallantly given his place on the lifeboat to a woman. All of her magnificent collection of jewels disappeared in the ocean that night, except for a sapphire and diamond ring, which Mrs. Astor was wearing. She wore it always after that, in remembrance of her valiant husband.

In the early 20th century the two brothers developed a deep interest and expertise in precious stones, jewels and watches. The period immediately after the Second World War marked an important turning point in the history of Bulgari. Giorgio and Costantino decided to create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th century Roman school. By the 1950’s-60’s, the bold and innovative style of Bulgari had gained success within the jet set and movie world, and they focused on jewels with precious gems. The use of black and white enamel in combination was a trademark style. The use of simple gems to accentuate the design of a jewel was common. Giuliano, like Castellani, experimented with ancient motifs and designs from antiquity. Amphorae, ancient wine jug shapes, symbols from Classical history, and mystical animal forms featured extensively in Castellani jewels. Drayson’s Art Deco jewels of the 1930s are recognized for their fine quality and elegance of design. Georg Jensen's style embraced the Art Nouveau with a modern sensibility and a Danish flair. Nature, tamed into flowing forms and embellished with geometry, is a constant theme in Jensen designs. Jensen has featured collaborations with some of the most important names in design, and these designers each bring their presence to the essence of Jensen. ILIAS LALAOUNIS Ilias Lalaounis comes from a family of goldsmiths and watchmakers; he joined the family business, Zolotas, in 1940, but by the 1960’s Ilias was most interested in exploring themes inspired by ancient Greek civilization, and by 1969, had established an independent company to focus on his interests. Ilias Lalaounis’ four daughters, Katerini, Demetra, Maria and Ioanna direct jewellery production and international sales. They also operate a Lalaounis museum.
JAEGER-LECOULTRE In 1847, Antoine LeCoultre created a revolutionary system that did away with the need for keys to rewind and set watches. Since that time, the company has produced many innovations to make timekeeping simpler, more convenient, more accurate, or to accommodate the specific requirements of clients. Producing complicated watches, and even more sophisticated chiming repeater watches, the brand is known for ultra thin movements, and accurate measurement. One of the most famous watches is the unusual Reverso, originally designed for English Polo players who wanted to easily reverse the watch to protect the dial from damage. While it’s an attractive and highly desired model, this is a minor innovation compared to 1 9 6
some of the sophistication that JaegerleCoultre produces.

Still at the cutting edge of design, Mauboussin has an international presence in Paris, Tokyo, and New York, among other locations, each of which is a work of art itself, displaying the works of the jeweller's art within.
MELLERIO A family owned jewellery house established in 1613, Laurent Mellerio is the 14th generation of Mellerio in the jewellery business. Having provided jewels to royalty for generations, Mellerio designers have produced unique jewels to suit the needs and taste of clients, both from the Paris base, and in its stores in Japan, Qatar, Luxembourg, and Hong Kong. The atelier made tiaras for the Queen of Spain in 1867, and of Italy in 1868. The tiaras, and many other jewels designed by Mellerio feature a stylized rose, a trademark of the company. MOVADO Movado is a name derived from the international Esperanto language, meaning “always in motion”, and was given to this watch company in 1905. Known for

PATEK PHILIPPE On May 1st, 1839 businessman Antoni Patek and watchmaker François Czapek joined forces to found “Patek, Czapek & Cie” in Geneva. In 1844, Patek met the French watchmaker, Jean-Adrien Philippe in Paris where the latter presented his pioneering stem winding and setting system by the crown. When Czapek decided to leave, the company name changed to “Patek & Cie”. Later, in 1851 when Adrien Philippe officially became associated with the company, it was renamed “Patek Philippe & Cie”, before changing once more in 1901 to “Ancienne Manufacture d’Horlogerie Patek Philippe & Cie, S.A.”. In 1932, the company was purchased by two brothers, Charles and Jean Stern, owners of a fine dial factory in Geneva. Since then, “Patek Philippe S.A.” remains a family owned firm. Patek Philippe is one of the most highly respected names in timepieces, and continues to produce extraordinary and complicated watches, desired by collectors around the world. PIAGET In 1874, in La Côte-aux-Fées, a small Swiss village Georges Édouard Piaget started his first workshop on the family farm and devoted himself to making high-precision movements that he soon began supplying to the most prestigious brands. In 1943, the company made a decision that from then on, the movement factory from La Côte-aux-Fées produced watches signed by and sold under its own name. In 1957, Piaget began to design and build the ultra-thin movements, and by 1960, Piaget launched the world’s thinnest selfwinding movement. It measured just 2.3 mm thick. In 1979, they launched the Piaget Polo watch. Avant-garde, yet classic enough never to go out of style, it quickly became an icon that was adopted by the international jet set. Piaget fuses technique and design now more than ever in jewellery and watchmaking.
ROLEX In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London specializing in the distribution of timepieces. Wristwatches were not very precise at the time, but Hans Wilsdorf foresaw that they could become not only elegant, but also reliable. To convince the public of the reliability of his timepieces, he equipped each watch with small, very precise movements manufactured by a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne. Rolex first concentrated on the quality of the movements. The relentless quest for chronometric precision rapidly led to success. In 1910, a Rolex watch was the first wristwatch in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, granted by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne. Four years later, in 1914, Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded a Rolex wristwatch a class “A” precision certificate, a distinction that until that point in time had been reserved exclusively for marine chronometers. From that date forward, the Rolex wristwatch was synonymous with precision. Rolex moved to Geneva, a city renowned internationally for watchmaking. Montres Rolex S.A. was registered in Geneva in 1920. Since that time, Rolex has become one of the most widely recognized watches in the world.
TIFFANY & CO. Founded in New York in 1837 Tiffany remains an icon to jewellery consumers around the world. Known for innovation and high standards, Tiffany had adopted the silver standard of “925”, and 95% standard for platinum, both later adopted as USA standards. In 1886 Tiffany introduced its iconic Tiffany setting providing a light and open setting to best display a diamond. Constantly working to bring the latest in design innovations to its offerings, Tiffany regularly brings designers to its clients; in 1956, Jean Schlumberger joined and in the famous annual “Blue Book” of 197475, Elsa Peretti was introduced. Paloma Picasso was first featured in 1980 and architect Frank Gehry has designed many current offerings. Drawing on the natural world, the company was early on recognized as a master of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement. Through the decades it has remained at the forefront of design, noted for the use of exceptional materials and unwavering standards.
VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Van Cleef & Arpels has always been inspired by the unique creative energy of love, for it was love which brought the Maison into being. Towards the end of the 19th century, a young girl named Estelle Arpels – the daughter of a dealer in precio--us stones – met a boy named Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone-cutter. This led them to founding the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels. In 1906, Alfred set up in business with Estelle’s brother Charles, a talented salesman who managed their new boutique in Paris’ Place Vendôme. Two years later, Estelle’s brother Julien joined the firm; a third brother, Louis, joined them in 1912. Over the years that followed, the name Van Cleef & Arpels became synonymous with the most exquisite jewellery in the world. With that achievement, the love, which first brought Estelle and Alfred together, lives on to this day through the many enchanting love stories of the Maison. Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most desired names in jewellery, noted for many innovations in design, manufacturing and gem setting techniques which changed the jewellery landscape and the way we think of jewellery. *Amongst the information provided in these biographical data are details from the official web sites of the named companies, houses, and designers.
