BIOGRAPHIES BAUME & MERCIER Established since 1830, Baume & Mercier has produced refined complications and innovations that have been incorporated into highly respected timepieces ever since. Through the decades, Baume & Mercier's great success with the watch-buying public has relied on the company remaining current with new styles and designs while it continues to make its mark on watchmaking techniques. BIRKS Canada's premier jewellery retailer was founded in 1879, in Montreal, Canada, by Henry Birks. Birks quickly became the prime destination for discerning jewellery connoisseurs. The 20th century saw prominent jewellers Ellis Brothers and Ryrie incorporated with the Birks name. By the late twentieth century, Canadian diamonds had become a central part of the Birks engagement ring business. Birks continues to be a leader in the Canadian jewellery industry, and the name Maison Birks was unveiled in 2013. BOODLES In 1798, a small jewellery shop called Boodle & Dunthorne opened in the city of Liverpool, England. In the early 20th century, the company relocated to Boodles House, a Georgian home in Lord Street, where it remains to this day. During World War II, Boodles produced the solid gold trophies presented to the winners at the Grand National horse race. And in 1947, Boodles was given the honour of the commission to make the silver stand for HRH Princess Elizabeth’s wedding cake. Recently, Louis Vuitton chose to include Boodles in its freshly revised City Guide London 2012, earmarking it as a “ British brand to watch”. BOUCHERON Frédéric Boucheron wished to be the watchmaker of “ Joyful Hours” and, through this vision, created watches that celebrate life’s special moments. Established in 1858, the Maison quickly developed a reputation for timepieces and joyful jewels featuring animals and textilelike treatments of precious metals. In 1900 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the Maison Boucheron received the gold medal and was established as one of the forerunners of the Art Nouveau movement. Among the illustrious clients of Boucheron: Ava Gardner, Joan Crawford, who acquired
a jewellery set made of aquamarines and diamonds, later purchased by Andy Warhol. Sarah Bernhardt repeatedly ordered replicas of her pets, set onto rings and necklaces. Edith Piaf was a regular client for watches. In 1921, the Maison created an exceptional diadem that became one of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother’s favourites. Madeleine Astor was a faithful client of Frédéric Boucheron’s. As a passenger on the Titanic, she survived the sinking, her husband having gallantly given his place on the lifeboat to a woman. All of her magnificent collection of jewels disappeared in the ocean that night, except for a sapphire and diamond ring, which Mrs. Astor was wearing. She wore it always after that, in remembrance of her valiant husband. BUCCELLATI Started in Milan in 1919, by Mario Buccellati, the house is known for intricate detail and unique textures and finishes in their jewels. The House of Buccellati has long been recognized as having an important place in the pantheon of jewellers. Buccellati has produced jewels for many royal houses and film stars. As the house expanded, shops were opened in Rome, Florence and New York. After Mario died in 1965, sons Gianmaria & Luca set out to expand the house on an international scale, with shops in Hong Kong, Japan, Monte Carlo, Paris, Sardinia, Venice, Capri, Elba and Beverly Hills, providing closer access to devoted clients. Buccellati continues today to produce their jewels in small workshops with artisans of many generations association with the House. BULGARI Descending from an ancient family of Greek silversmiths, Sotirio Bulgari founded the company in 1881, manufacturing precious silver objects. During the late 19th century, Sotirio moved to Italy and in 1884 opened his first shop in Rome. In 1905, with the help of his sons Costantino and Giorgio, he inaugurated the shop in Via Condotti, which remains Bulgari’s flagship store. In the early 20th century the two brothers developed a deep interest and expertise in precious stones, jewels and watches. The period immediately after the Second World War marked an important turning point in the history of Bulgari. Giorgio and Costantino decided to create a unique style inspired by Greco-Roman classicism, the Italian Renaissance, and the 19th century Roman school. By the 1950’s-60’s, the bold and innovative style of Bulgari had gained 1 7 4
success within the jet set and movie world, and they focused on jewels with precious gems. In 1977 Bulgari launched the BVLGARI watch, a worldwide success story. The watch component of Bulgari has become a very important part of the business since then. CARTIER Louis-François Cartier founded Cartier, in Paris, in 1847. He had three grandsons, Louis, Pierre and Jacques, who were responsible for establishing the famous world-wide empire. The next fifty years saw many milestones: Royal clientele from England, Siam ( now Thailand), Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, and Monaco. Cartier, in 1906, first introduced jewellery in the geometric style that was later to become known as Art Deco. Among the exceptional jewels and gems sold by Cartier was the famous blue diamond “ The Hope”, now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian, in Washington. Cartier moved to their current location at 653 Fifth Avenue, New York in 1917. The Morton F. Plant mansion was exchanged for a two strand natural oriental pearl necklace for Mrs. Plant, and $100 for Mr. Plant. The name Cartier continues to evoke the image of luxury like no other. CAVELTI The youngest son of a Swiss family, Toni Cavelti served a long apprenticeship in the goldsmith's trade, developing a magical skill in jewellery design. At the age of 23, equipped with only $8, the tools of his trade and a romantic vision of the Canadian West, he arrived in Vancouver. There he made his fortune by creating fine jewellery for “ society” women, including the Queen. In 1971 he was commissioned to make a necklace of B.C. gold and local jade to mark a royal visit. The modernist artistic movement under way in the Vancouver of the '50s and '60s brought Cavelti’s work to its full flowering, and helped to establish his national and international reputation. CHAUMET The history of Chaumet dates back to 1780 and is closely interwoven with the history of France. The wedding of Napoleon and Josephine, and later with the Archduchess Marie-Louise de Habsburg-Lorraine, niece of Queen MarieAntoinette, brought Chaumet numerous sumptuous orders. Chaumet became the most
famous jeweller in Europe and built up a prestigious clientele. Inspired by the enchantment of nature, Joseph Chaumet established himself as the absolute Master of the Belle Epoque. With his elegant creations, he attracted royals and aristocrats. Aigrettes and tiaras became a very important part of the firm’s designs. Chaumet has produced more than 1,500 different models of tiaras. Chaumet created simplified designs contained within rigid geometric outlines of the Art Deco period in the 1920’s and 30’s. Responding to the continuous social, economic and artistic changes, Chaumet has maintained its legendary reputation. Design is determined by the good taste of the contemporary Parisienne, always in search of something new, different and sumptuous. CHOPARD In 1860, in the small village of Sonvilier, Switzerland, Louis-Ulysse Chopard, a talented young craftsman, established his workshop. His watches quickly gained a solid reputation among enthusiasts and found buyers as far afield as Eastern Europe, Russia and Scandinavia. Chopard has developed into a brand known for both its fine timepieces, and its sense of fun, with styles such as ‘ Happy Diamonds’, and watches that are as whimsical as they are reliable. CORUM Established in 1955, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Corum has established its place in the world of timepiece production with numerous innovations and iconic designs. The ‘ Admiral’s Cup’, introduced in 1960, remains a central element of the brand. The 1964 introduction of an ultra flat movement mounted inside a coin proved exceptionally popular. In the year 2000, the Corum Bubble was introduced, bringing a distinct element of novelty and urban chic to the wrists of Corum clients. DAVID WEBB Originally from North Carolina, David Webb moved to New York, and in 1948, he formed David Webb Inc., located on 57th Street. Within a few years, he had established himself as one of the most fashionable jewellers in Manhattan, and at the height of production his two full-time workshops employed 200 jewellers and 37 setters. The New York social register flocked to him.
They warmed to his personal charm and appreciated his brilliance as a designer. David Webb’s designs of the 1950s and early 1960s showcased endless variations on flowers and organic forms. His love of nature took shape in jewels of all sizes and varieties. Almost all of his iconic animal jewelry was designed in the 1960s. The times were changing and he embraced them: the rich vocabulary of hammered gold, enamel, pearls, colors, textures and shapes were synthesized into a new geometry that reflected the spirit of the 1970s. DIOR Christian Dior started his eponymous fashion house in 1946, and presented his first collection in 1947. The “ New Look” changed the fashion world forever. Dior was superstitious about numbers and the elegant simplicity of the timepiece is a perfect combination of the fashion sense of Dior and his fascination with numbers. FRED Fred Samuel, at the age of 28, established his first jewellery store in Paris at 6 rue Royale, in 1936, The son of a jeweller, he was an inventive promoter, and through his charm and connections, was always able to remain in the spotlight in Paris society. With a strong international reputation, and with charm and simplicity, Fred designs continue to captivate the sophisticated jewellery buyer. His guiding principles: “ Boldness and discipline” GARRARD This famous company dates back to its founder George Wickes who first entered his mark at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1722, and went into business on his own in 1735. Soon after, he was appointed as goldsmith to the Prince of Wales Since 1843, when Queen Victoria bestowed the honour of Crown Jeweller on the company, Garrard has served six successive monarchs. One of the most enduring images of Queen Victoria is of her wearing a small diamond crown made by Garrard in 1870. In 1911 two important commissions were undertaken: the making of Queen Mary's Crown for the Coronation; and, the Imperial Crown of India worn by King George V later that year. In 1937 the crown set with the Kohi-Noor diamond was made for the late Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. The Imperial State Crown was remounted by Garrard in 1937, and then further adjusted for H.M. The Queen for the Coronation in 1953. 1 7 5
Ceremony and pageantry has always been a key element in the company's heritage Robert Garrard's hallmark of 1848 is found on the wellknown America's Cup. For modern day sports enthusiasts other presentation trophies include the Dubai World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, and the Premier League Trophy. GEORG JENSEN Georg Jensen set out, in 1904 to create designs that possessed both functionality and beauty, the essence of the Arts and Crafts movement. Georg Jensen’s style embraced the Art Nouveau with a modern sensibility and a Danish flair. Nature, tamed into flowing forms and embellished with geometry, is a constant theme in Jensen designs. Jensen has featured collaborations with some of the most important names in design, and these designers each bring their presence to the essence of Jensen. GÜBELIN Gübelin’s origins in Lucerne, Switzerland date to 1854, with the opening of a watchmaker’s shop, by Jakob Josef Moritz Breitschmid. The business has bridged the development of vast changes in the watch, jewellery and gem world. Through many generations, Gübelin has developed into a very important jeweller, with a strong focus on fine gems. The interest in gems led to a focus on the study of gemmology, and the establishment of a specialty gemmological laboratory under the same name. Jewellery buyers have relied on Gübelin’s understanding of gems to be able to produce the finest jewellery. HENRY DUNAY The Henry Dunay brand was created in 1965 in New York, and established a loyal following for its unique designs and fine quality of work. The brand is notable for intricate finish features including fine pavé setting. INTERNATIONAL WATCH CO ( IWC) International Watch Company was established in Schaffhausen in 1868 by an American, Florentine Aristo Jones, who aimed to produce high quality watches for the U.S. market, using a highly skilled, but modestly priced Swiss workforce. The company was involved in the early production of wristwatches, early quartz watches, important developments in diver’s watches, the first wristwatch with a built in compass, and complicated movements. Some of the notable models are Ingenieur,
Aérospatiale, The GST Deep One, Spitfire, Aquatimer, Portuguese, and Da Vinci. JAEGER-LECOULTRE In 1847, Antoine LeCoultre created a revolutionary system that did away with the need for keys to rewind and set watches. Since that time, the company has produced many innovations to make timekeeping simpler, more convenient, more accurate, or to accommodate the specific requirements of clients. Producing complicated watches, and even more sophisticated chiming repeater watches, the brand is known for ultra thin movements, and accurate measurement. One of the most famous watches is the unusual Reverso, originally designed for English Polo players who wanted to easily reverse the watch to protect the dial from damage. While it’s an attractive and highly desired model, this is a minor innovation compared to some of the sophistication that JaegerleCoultre produces. KARL STITTGEN Jeweller and goldsmith, Karl Stittgen began his career designing and making contemporary jewellery in Vancouver in 1959. Over several decades he created an original and distinctive body of work inspired by the organic forms of nature and the clean lines of architecture. Creations of gold, platinum, gemstones, pearls, ancient coins and artifacts earned him loyal customers and much critical acclaim during what some have called the golden age of design in Vancouver. Stittgen received the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award of Distinction in Vancouver in 2009. KUTCHINSKY The Kutchinksy business was established in the 1890s when Joseph Kutchinsky's grandfather fled Poland, bringing his family to England, where he set up a jewellery manufacturing company in the East End of London. The extensive use of platinum, gold and diamonds has been a benchmark of Kutchinsky, incorporating these materials into delicate forms that are ready for any occasion. MARCELLA CICERI Marcella Ciceri, based in New York, is from Northern Italy, and is a jewelry designer, a trader in precious gems, and a fashion accessory consultant. Her work has a modern flair, often using unusual materials, or combinations of old and new, blended into creative pieces.

In 1844, Patek met the French watchmaker, JeanAdrien Philippe in Paris where the latter presented his pioneering stem winding and setting system by the crown. When Czapek decided to leave, the company name changed to " Patek & Cie" . Later, in 1851 when Adrien Philippe officially became associated with the company, it was renamed " Patek Philippe & Cie" , before changing once more in 1901 to " Ancienne Manufacture d’Horlogerie Patek Philippe & Cie, S.A." . In 1932, the company was purchased by two brothers, Charles and Jean Stern, owners of a fine dial factory in Geneva. Since then, " Patek Philippe S.A." remains a family owned firm. Patek Philippe is one of the most highly respected names in timepieces, and continues to produce extraordinary and complicated watches, desired by collectors around the world.

At the company’s inception in 1912, there were three brothers, Nathan, Oscar and Harry, who brought with them not only their rarified skills, but an abiding passion for gemstones and an old world approach to gracious customer service. The company has produced jewels for several prestigious jewellery firms, including Marcus & Co., Shreve & Co., and Cartier. Their pieces are often not signed. The Heyman family has run the company for three generations, with each generation imparting centuries old skills and technical know-how to the next. PIAGET In 1874, in La Côte-aux-Fées, a small Swiss village Georges Édouard Piaget started his first workshop on the family farm and devoted himself to making high-precision movements that he soon began supplying to the most prestigious brands. In 1943, the company made a decision that from then on, the movement factory from La Côte-aux-Fées produced watches signed by and sold under its own name. In 1957, Piaget began to design and build the ultra-thin movements, and by 1960, Piaget launched the world’s thinnest self-winding movement. It measured just 2.3 mm thick. In 1979, they launched the Piaget Polo watch. Avant-garde, yet classic enough never to go out of style, it quickly became an icon that was adopted by the international jet set. Piaget fuses technique and design now more than ever in jewellery and watchmaking. RAYMOND YARD Raymond Yard began his career as a door boy at Marcus & Co Jewelers in New York. The year was 1898, and the young Yard was thirteen. He worked his way up the through the company, and by his 30’s, he was a senior salesman. 1922 was an important year for Yard; it was the year that John D. Rockefeller suggested that Yard open his own business. Rockefeller recommended the new Yard Company to his wealthy and influential friends. Woolworth, duPont,
Vanderbilt, and film stars such as Joan Crawford, and Douglas Fairbanks were clients. Yard established his reputation producing fine Art Deco jewellery, focusing on fine gems and platinum in their manufacture. He established a “ Yard look” that continues to this day. ROLEX In 1905, at the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London specializing in the distribution of timepieces. Wristwatches were not very precise at the time, but Hans Wilsdorf foresaw that they could become not only elegant, but also reliable. To convince the public of the reliability of his timepieces, he equipped each watch with small, very precise movements manufactured by a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne. Rolex first concentrated on the quality of the movements. The relentless quest for chronometric precision rapidly led to success. In 1910, a Rolex watch was the first wristwatch in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, granted by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne. Four years later, in 1914, Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded a Rolex wristwatch a class “ A” precision certificate, a distinction that until that point in time had been reserved exclusively for marine chronometers. From that date forward, the Rolex wristwatch was synonymous with precision. Rolex moved to Geneva, a city renowned internationally for watchmaking. Montres Rolex S.A. was registered in Geneva in 1920. Since that time, Rolex has become one of the most widely recognized watches in the world. SALVINI Italian jeweller Salvini, based in Valenza, has a reputation for classic modern jewels, with simple lines and forms, and very fine diamonds. From 1934 to 1939 Sterlé created and made jewellery for houses such as Boucheron, Chaumet, Kirby, Ostertag and Puiforcat. At this time, many fashionable Parisians started to know the way to his atelier. Sterlé was adamant that he wasn’t going to exhibit his work in any shop window. The renowned French writer Colette mentioned Sterlé’s jewels in some of her books. Through the 1950’s Sterlé was invit-
ed to Egypt by King Farouk and to Brazil where he was welcomed by President Vargas. The wife of the Maharaja of Baroda ordered some jewels and an exiled Egyptian queen asked Sterlé to remodel her crown jewels. Sterlé received, in 1953, ‘ 54, and ‘ 55, the prestigious ‘ Diamond Award’ from De Beers. Being an avid reader, in 1960, Sterlé collaborated with Salvador Dali for a book cover. He made it in bronze and covered it with gold, gemstones and pearls. It was called the ‘ Livre de L’Apocalypse’. It was unique and illustrated by all of the contemporary painters of the time. In 1961, Sterlé started selling most of his creations to the ‘ Maison Chaumet’. An artist with exceptional creativity, and modest business skills, by 1976 Sterlé was forced to declare bankruptcy and liquidate his stock. Chaumet purchased most of his creations and signed anything that Sterlé forgot to mark, including jewels dating back to the early 1960’s. Sterlé remained employed at Chaumet as a ‘ Technical consultant', until his death in 1978. Constantly working to bring the latest in design innovations to its offerings, Tiffany regularly brings designers to its clients; in 1956, Jean Schlumberger joined and in the famous annual “ Blue Book” of 1974-75, Elsa Peretti was introduced. Paloma Picasso was first featured in 1980 and architect Frank Gehry has designed many current offerings. Drawing on the natural world, the company was early on recognized as a master of Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement. Through the decades it has remained at the forefront of design, noted for the use of exceptional materials and unwavering standards.

In 1966, Gerald Genta designed the “ Golden Shadow”, the thinnest automatic watch of its time, winning Universal Geneve numerous prizes. Universal Geneve has always focused on good quality timepieces with classic styling to produce watches that will remain in fashion through changing times. An innovator in the technical aspects of the timepiece, Vacheron Constantin has remained among the most sought after brands in the market. VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Van Cleef & Arpels has always been inspired by the unique creative energy of love, for it was love which brought the Maison into being. Towards the end of the 19th century, a young girl named Estelle Arpels – the daughter of a dealer in precious stones – met a boy named Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stone-cutter. This led them to founding the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels. In 1906, Alfred set up in business with Estelle’s brother Charles, a talented salesman who managed their new boutique in Paris’ Place Vendôme. Two years later, Estelle’s brother Julien joined the firm; a third brother, Louis, joined them in 1912. Over the years that followed, the name Van Cleef & Arpels became synonymous with the most exquisite jewellery in the world. With that achievement, the love, which first brought Estelle and Alfred together, lives on to this day through the many enchanting love stories of the Maison. Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most desired names in jewellery, noted for many innovations in design, manufacturing and gem setting techniques which changed the jewellery landscape and the way we think of jewellery. *Amongst the information provided in these biographical data are details from the official web sites of the named companies, houses, and designers.
