rom the moment last year’s show ended, we’ve been working to present an even more exciting show for 2015. This year we have new exhibitors, many local businesses, as well as national exhibitors with unique products. We will again have a silent auction with great items provided by each of our exhibitors and local businesses. Be sure to stop by throughout the show to check on your bids. Raffle tickets are $5 each, or five tickets for $20, and can be purchased at the information booth.

First prize is a 39” Sharp 1080p LED TV and the second prize is a $200 Visa Gift Card.

We are proud to partner again with local Classic Car Clubs to present the 3rd Annual Classic Car Show. Visit the car show on Saturday and vote for your favorites. Jimmer’s Back Country BBQ will be serving breakfast and lunch in the kitchen both days. There is also great food available in several of the booths located outside the west entrance to the main pavilion. Proceeds from the show, silent auction and raffle are used to fund college scholarships that are awarded annually by the Four Corners Builders Association, educational seminars, and ongoing community projects.

The Four Corners Builders Association is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders and the Colorado Association of Home Builders. This non-profit association was established on June 24, 1996 and is committed to:

•Providing continued education and a forum for networking our members.

•Being involved in our community and acting as a liaison between our members and the community.

•Representing the building industry in local government and influencing the local legislative agenda.

•Promoting safe and sound building practices and community planning.

•Continuing to enhance the public image of the building industry.

Members of the Four Corners Builders Association adhere to a strict code of ethics which include conducting business affairs with skill, integrity, and responsibility; and protecting the consumer through the use of quality materials and construction practices backed by integrity and service.

Admission to this year’s show is only $3 for adults or $2 with a nonperishable food item, $1 for seniors age 65 and above, and kids under 12 are admitted free. Your food items will be donated to the Good Samaritan Food Bank. A portion of the proceeds from your admission will also be donated to the 4-H Shooting Sports Club.

What is “Aging in Place?”

A

ging in place may not be the most glamorous topic to discuss, but it is an important concept to think about nevertheless.

Aging in place, is a term used in the building/remodeling industry that means adapting or designing your home with consideration given to the special needs of its current or future occupants.

It incorporates a design that will allow you or a loved one to stay comfortably and safely in your home for as long as possible.

Ideally, this is done in the design process before a home is built.

In practicality though, adaptive living usually involves some degree of remodeling due to unforeseen changes to the physical and mental limitations of its occupants.

Hands down, the most common area of the home that my clients request for adaptive living changes is in the bathroom. There are some simple ideas to think about when you are designing a bathroom.

If at all possible, make sure the entry door allows enough room for wheelchair accessibility. Allow enough room inside the bathroom for maneuverability. Place grab bars, or at least backing for grab bars in specific strategic locations.

I try to incorporate grab bars into all my bathroom remodels.

Think about non-trip/non-slip flooring choices. Adequate lighting is also important. I have also replaced numerous bathtubs with walk-in showers.

Incorporating this small change allows for easier access to anyone with limited mobility. This can be an issue for the elderly but anyone who has experienced a sprained ankle or a broken leg will realize the benefit of a barrier free access to showering.

Aging in place is a broad topic and there are numerous items to be considered. These are just a few of the concepts to keep in mind if you are considering building a new home or contemplating a partial remodel.

Get kids excited about gardening M

any adults understand the joy of gardening, but gardening can be equally fun for children as well. While some adults may feel that certain children do not have the patience or perseverance to see plants grow from seeds to adulthood, selecting plants that are hardy and sprout quickly may be the key to igniting a love of gardening in children.

Choosing seeds that sprout quickly can hold the attention of children who are new to gardening. Many different plants fit this bill. Beans, peas, sunflower seeds, and bell pepper seeds are easy to start and germinate quickly.

In addition, many leafy vegetables, such as chard, lettuce, spinach, and mustard, germinate in three to five days.

Herbs, such as basil and parsley, also sprout fast. All of these plants are good options for introducing children to gardening, as each provides quick gratification.

To further interest children, it is a good idea to plant seeds in a way that allows youngsters to monitor the progress of growth. Use a transparent container, such as rinsed-out glass jars and canisters, to house the plant. Such containers give kids an unobstructed view of the process, during which children can plot the progress of seed germination and easily spot root and stem development. Once the seedlings grow larger, they can be transplanted into different containers.

Many seedlings can sprout with water alone. Children can easily grow new plants from clippings of a mature plant left resting in a shallow cup of water, and seeds may not even need soil to germinate.

Kids may have luck sprinkling seeds on a dampened, crumpled-up piece of paper towel. Cotton balls also make a good place to nestle seeds. Either material will hold on to water, keeping the seeds moist until they sprout.

Afterward, the seedlings can be carefully moved into a soil-and-compost mix. The paper towel and the cotton balls will decompose and add to the organic matter already in the soil.

Edible plants often make good choices for children because kids can reap the rewards of their efforts. Herbs can be sprinkled onto food, or fruits and vegetables can be grown in containers and then served at mealtime. Kids can show pride in their accomplishments, especially if they have tangible results on the dinner plate.

Children who want to try something different can explore other types of plants. Aquatic plants, or those found at the pet store to grow in aquariums, can be easy to grow. They need little more than a container, fresh water and sunlight. Cacti and other succulents are also fun to explore. These plants are quite hardy in that they can stand up to moderate abuse, such as failure to water frequently enough. The unique appearance of cacti make them interesting focal points for an indoor garden.

A love of gardening that’s fostered inside can also be explored outdoors. Set aside a plot of dirt where kids can sow their own seeds and tend to their own gardens. This hobby can help children learn patience and hard work while fostering an appreciation of nature.

Managing difficult yard situations M

any homeowners aim for a picture perfect lawn with rolling acres of soft, green grass. But Mother Nature may have other things in mind, such as less-than-stellar growing conditions for their lawns, plants and other foliage. Frustration can mount when a yard is muddy, especially shady or has soil that doesn’t grow a thing. In such instances, homeowners may have to go the extra mile to get the yard they desire.

Irrigation issues Improper drainage or low-lying areas in a yard may contribute to a muddy mess. Soil that is inhospitable for grass may end up causing muddy patches. In some cases, remedying a muddy yard is easy and inexpensive. Some homeowners find that tilling the soil and amending it with a fiber mulch helps to absorb extra water making the conditions better for lawn seeds. This also helps to aerate compacted soil that can hinder grass growth. Adding soil fill may help to level low-lying areas that can be puddling. Some homeowners find that they need to do a little more work to fix irrigation issues. Installing a draining system or having the property sloped to draw water away can be done by a homeowner but is often best left to a professional.

Sandy soil Grass and other plants may not grow well with sandy or clay soil.

Again, amending the soil is one way to remedy the problem. Although it will take some work at the outset, amending the soil can improve conditions and reduce how much maintenance the lawn needs. Digging down several inches and adding nutrient-rich filler soil will help create conditionsthat are better for growing. Those are interested in planting vegetables could opt for raised garden beds above the challenging soil.

Shade Sometimes yard problems arise because of the amount of sunshine it receives. Too much sunshine can scald certain grasses, while inadequate sunshine may result in bare patches. If cost is no object, removing or planting trees to establish better growing conditions could be an option. Today there are many grass blends that are tailored toward specific scenarios. Homeowners may find that low-light blends will grow better in shady areas. For those who are finding no luck with grass blends, it may just be necessary to think creatively. Landscaping the troubled area naturally and effectively will be a saving grace.
