Automobiles through the eras tell a story of innovation. They are a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of automotive design. Every year, car enthusiasts converge on the Four Corners Home & Garden Show at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds to showcase vintage vehicles.
Four Corners Builders Association events coordinator Amber Kennedy said the annual car show is a beloved tradition, and a cornerstone for the longevity of the event. The show features unique vehicles from local and surrounding areas, restored and maintained by their owners, and it draws quite a crowd year after year. This year, the 13th Classic Car Show will take place Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Guests may gather to view rows of cars located west of the Main Pavilion and cast a vote for a favorite car. This aspect of the annual show allows the audience to carefully examine the vehicles and interact with the owners, which adds an element of engagement that many car shows do not. Kennedy said the competition is always fierce, with a diverse range of classic cars vying for the top placements in “Best Of Show.”
Over the years, the Classic Car Show has featured an impressive array of vehicles from across the Four Corners, each representing different eras. Last year, the event saw 47 different cars and trucks. From vintage roadsters to classic muscle cars, the show consistently offers a plethora of conversation for car enthusiasts of all ages. Some of the most memorable vehicles from previous shows include these gems:
1951 Studebaker
1956 Chevy Truck
1957 Chevy Bel Air
1959 Chevy Apache
1964 Chevy Malibu
1969 Ford Bronco
To see some beautifully maintained machines, don’t miss out on this annual show. For more information, or to register a vehicle, go online. fourcornershomeandgardenshow.com
Modern vehicles may last 200,000 miles or more–anywhere from 12 to 15 years–but drivers must maintain its condition.
• Start slow and steady. Afford the engine time to warm up and let fluids cycle before picking up speed.
• Don’t be extreme. Jerky turns, gunning the gas and braking hard lead to unnecessary wear and tear. Put less stress on mechanical components to prevent damage.
• Keep it clean. Clear out trash or wipe down the interior weekly, and do a more thorough detailing once a month.
• Check the oil. Review the levels routinely, and add oil as needed.
• Park in the shade or a garage. Park out of direct sunlight when possible so the paint and upholstry will not fade. If parking for an extended period of time, use a dry, well-ventilated location.
• Be attentive. Listen to the sounds the vehicle is making and give it a visual inspection each time you get in or out of the car. The sooner an issue is identified, the easier it is to fix.
The annual Four Corners Home and Garden Show is a fun way to kick off the spring season, and support a good cause. The two-day trade show is the largest fundraiser for the Four Corners Builders Association, a membership-based nonprofit organization that focuses on providing advocacy and education for business owners with interests in construction and community development.
The nonprofit is affiliated with similar organizations on the state and national level, like Colorado Association of Home Builders and the National Association of Home Builders, which share knowledge and trends to improve the standard of industry products and services across the country. FCBA arranges and sponsors local events, such as educational forums and training workshops open to the public, to support business owners and strengthen the community.
In 2024, FCBA raised $3,000 to donate to the local American Legion and VFW. Proceeds from this year’s event will again support these veteran organizations in Montezuma County. In the past, these fundraisers have been used to support other impactful community projects and improve youth programs, including the Montezuma-Cortez High School Choir and 4-H Shooters Club.
Becoming a member of Four Corners Builders Association comes with a range of benefits. Those who join the FCBA automatically
become a member of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Colorado Association of Home Builders (CAHB).
Member-to-member discounts and special rates help to promote the philosophy of strengthening community. Reduce costs of car rentals, office products, PCs, payroll services, overnight delivery and more. Some large corporations that offer discounts include Dell Computers, FTD, Omaha Steaks, UPS, General Motors, Lowes, Hertz, Office Depot and GEICO Insurance, to name a few.
Access to an abundance of resources and support from industry experts, such as economists, legal research staff and regulatory and technical specialists, help business owners reduce costs, increase profit margins and boost success.
The Four Corners Builders Association plays an important role in fostering connections, supporting local veterans and offering valuable resources to construction and development professionals. By attending events hosted by the FCBA, like the Four Corners Home and Garden Show and the annual Golf Tournament, community members can contribute to meaningful causes while also benefiting from the networking and learning opportunities. Whether as a participant or a member, getting involved with FCBA helps strengthen not only local businesses but also the community as a whole.
While it is the largest, the Four Corners Home and Garden Show is not the only fundraiser for the Four Corners Builders Association. The organization also hosts an annual golf tournament at the Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez, Colorado that is open to the public. Proceeds from the tournament benefit local student scholarships and veterans organizations.
This year’s tournament will take place in the fall. Teams of four can sign up to compete in a format that will be announced at a later date. The entry fee is $75 per person and includes mulligans, pro shots, lunch and driving range access. Cart and green fees are not included.
Participants may register between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. to be ready for the shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be served after the tournament concludes, with additional lunch tickets available for $12.
Prizes will be awarded for the closest to the pin, the longest putt, the longest drive and there will be a cash prize for a lucky hole-in-one. Awards will be presented on the patio following the tournament.
Hole sponsorships are available for $100. For more information about sponsorships or the tournament, call (970) 565-1771 or download the sponsorship form online and mail it along with your check.

Each spring presents an opportunity for homeowners to get back outside and tend to their gardens. Lawns and gardens begin to grow anew as temperatures rise and hours of daylight increase. Consider these spring planning pointers to maintain lush landscapes.
• Start with the soil. Winter can take its toll on a garden. Clear rocks and other debris from the area before loosening the soil. The Farmer’s Almanac recommends loosening soil to a depth of at least eight inches if planting a new garden. An existing garden may only need to be loosened to a depth of around six inches, after which homeowners can mix compost into the soil in early spring. The compost provides nutrients and helps to build strong plant roots.
• Consider a raised garden in colder climates. Raised gardens can help homeowners in colder climates dry out and warm up wet, cold soils more quickly. Homeowners may also cover the beds with black plastic or cardboard prior to planting. Doing so can protect the garden from late-season snow and spring rains and also helps to overcome erosion.
• Take soil temperatures. Unpredictable weather is a hallmark of Southwestern Colorado. That lack of predictability can make spring planting a little more tricky. Experts note that soil temperatures around 50 F are best for cool-season crops, while soil should be 60 For warmer when planting warm-weather plants such as tomatoes.
• Work with a garden center. The right plants for one region may not be ideal for another, so homeowners are urged to work with a local landscaper or garden center before planting. Such a consultation can be especially useful for homeowners planting a new garden. Landscapers and garden center professionals will know which plants work in the local climate.
• Consider planting vegetables in the spring. Experts note that spring is an ideal time to plant vegetables. If planted at the right time, a vegetable garden can save homeowners money on their grocery bills and provide a season’s worth of fresh veggies.
In general, a little extra preparation can may extend the life of the garden. These actions will establish a solid foundation for spring.
