Music walk, circus, hoedown: One wild, eclectic weekend

I

t was one of those amazing weekends where someone asks you, “How was your weekend?” and you’re like, “I don’t even know where to start.”

It was a weekend of three distinct and diverse events that took place in venues that brought out different parts of the communities we live in; part of it was wholesome-ish crowds of all ages and part of it brought out the freakiness of Durango. All of it put together made me incredibly grateful and proud to live in these parts.

It started with the iAM MUSIC walk Friday evening, which took place across eight pop-up venues downtown. It was an organizational triumph pulled off by Ashley Edwards and Jesse Ogle of iAM Music. The venues I hit were mellow, the musicians mostly local, all of the music tight. At the end of each song, some people would politely shuffle out, just as you’d expect at a walkable music festival.

The crowds were listening and engaged, a welcome departure from noisy bars.

On the agenda that night after the music walk was the Imaginario Circus at the ACT, headed by Durangoans Extraordinaire Hattie Miller and Steve Ward, to which I had a ticket to the 9:15 show. Around 8:30, I found myself at Open Shutter, first listening to an iAM student band comprised of young women who were killing it. They turned the stage over to Ashley and Jesse as Ace Revel, but by then it was time for me to change into my Imaginario costume.

Because, you know, no epic night in Durango is complete without a costume.

This is where the two crowds began to overlap and isn’t that great, when two distinct communities intermingle?

I went from regular, respectable guy in jeans and blazer to walking out of the Open Shutter restroom in a striped women’s top that looked like something a medieval jester would entertain the king in, sparkly black tights and a pair of tightie undies I spent the morning covering entirely in duct tape. I’m pretty sure Ace Revel’s crowd was eying me suspiciously, but I had a freaky circus to

attend, you see.

The Imaginario Circus was simply stellar, an hour-plus-long visual treat. It was the kind of experience that doesn’t happen often or enough around here, an event that draws out talent you didn’t think existed among us. It was sexy and racy and full of raw talent, strength, courage (both physical and emotional) and athleticism. It was Liz Thomas suspended on a slackline over the audience, balancing and bending in mind-boggling fashion. It was a dozen bodies onstage moving in rhythm. It was Hattie’s tantalizing burlesque performance. It was Steve wrapped in silks 20-something feet in the air, suspending and spinning. At one point, there were a dozen places you could look on stage and see everyone doing something different, something amazing and eye-popping.

And then, after the show, the beats kept pumping. The performers were still playing onstage and us freaks in the audience, all costumed out, many of us in masks, continued the freakiness.

And then, Saturday. I went to the hoedown at the Mancos Opera House, a benefit for the Montezuma School to Farm Project. Talk about a transition from Imaginario. The opera house was packed with kids and parents, boots and denim, brimmy hats and multiple banjos. Gunnison band Free the Honey brought their folky bluegrass, followed by the evercrowd-pleasing Six Dollar String Band with the old time upbeat picking, singing and playing into one old-timey mic.

Then the Durango gypsy band Carute Roma came on. This is where the weekend tied itself together. With scores of others on the dance floor, we stomped boots, and at one point opened up an ever-growing circle of young and old, joining hands, some soft, some hardened and gruff, all of us smiling and laughing against our will.

For each of these events I’d been hanging with the brother of a friend who was in town from Southern California, and I couldn’t help but keep shouting into his ear, “Isn’t this place amazing?!” Yes, he’d say, amazing indeed.

Cats Love it What I like about cats is how human they are. Dogs are too good and loyal and obedient; we don’t really deserve their devotion. We’re a selfish species, for the most part. But cats mirror our own failings back to us in soft, fuzzy form. They are aloof, complicated and sensitive. Sometimes they will purr and cuddle their warm bodies up against you, and other times they will sink their curved claws into you deep enough to draw blood. They’ll roll over to expose their belly and eye you coyly, then attack you for trying to stroke their belly. Cats are like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re gonna get.

They’re also charmingly erratic. They’ll wait quietly inside a closet or behind a curtain and then leap out when you pass by. They’ll jump up suddenly and dart out of a room for no apparent reason. You’ll find them sleeping in all sorts of weird spots: the laundry basket, on top of the printer, in the sink, curled around a potted plant or wedged inside literally any size box they can get their paws on. At breakfast, they’ll slowly push your cup of coffee off the table, then try to chomp down on your pastry.

Best of all, cats get involved. A dog might sleep at your feet while you work on the computer, but a cat will try to sleep directly on top of your keyboard. It just wants to be near you. Or maybe it wants to stop you from getting anything done. Who cares? Not your cat, probably.

Who couldn’t love a creature so wicked and odd?

Hate it It’s not because I am allergic to them or that they can be disappointingly aloof and fickle, or how they lure you in with their cuddliness and then scratch your face off (OK, that was just one cat). It’s about one thing, really: Birds.

Every day, cats kill 6.6 million birds – Every.

Day. – according to a 2013 study by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That’s 2.4 billion every year, making cats the biggest humancaused threat to birds (so yes, my hatred of cats is more of a hatred of outdoor-cat owners). There are other human-related causes of mass bird deaths – windows, cars, cell towers, wind turbines – but all together, they still don’t kill as many birds as cats.

So what if the world has a few less birds each year, you might say, as long as you get to pet and play with Mittens or whatever the hell your cat’s name is. And sure, some of these birds are overpopulated and invasive in their own right, like the despicable European starling. But many of them are not, like the endangered piping plover. Worldwide, cats have played major roles in the extinction of 33 bird species. Gone, never to return.

Thanks, cats.

I realize that hating cats won’t save a single bird. But if you insist on an outdoor cat, there are special bibs and bells, among other things. If you care, there are solutions.

You show up at 4 to set up, which is heavy work. Then you start getting tables. You might get kids throwing mashed potatoes; you might get the nicest people you’ve ever met. You’re running around the entire night, trying to keep things straight.

What do you do to psych yourself up for a shift? [laughs] Off record, I have a glass and a half of wine.

Whoa!

I’m kidding, of course. Serving is unlike any other job.

You’re adrenalized the entire night. I have to decompress for at least an hour after work. You’re on the entire shift.

What makes for a great night?

It’s more than just making tips. It’s having people and tables that you connect with. It’s nice to have people who aren’t annoyed by your presence. It’s hard when people come to eat, knowing that they’re going to be served, only to act annoyed when you come to the table. It’s not my fault that you came to the restaurant.

Wait, annoyed?

I had a guy who, every single time I would come to his table, acted like I was bothering him. He wouldn’t make eye contact with me, wouldn’t stop his conversation and I would wait entire minutes. He’d finally turn to me, and go, “What?! What do you want?!” He actually made me cry later, and then tipped nothing. Zero.

Not only was I emotionally abused, but then I basically paid for him to eat!

What do you mean?

At the end of the night, I don’t tip bartenders and bussers out of my tips, it’s out of my net sales. So regardless of what I make – like, if I don’t get a tip on any of my tables, I’d still owe 30 percent to the bartender and the busser. And it turns out, I can’t split my verbal tips with them, either.

Verbal tips?

Leaving a comment card that says, “Best service ever!

Love the food! Can’t wait to come back!” or they say“You’re wonderful! You’re a doll! We had an amazing time!” And I’m thinking, ‘They liked me! It’s going to be a great tip!’ only to find that they left 18 percent or less. It’s like, are you going to go and tell my son’s

What can diners do to help themselves?

I guess, just please remember that your server is a person, too. By all means, totally be specific. Just realize that ordering your steak well done means that it’s going to be on the grill for longer to cook, so it’s going to take longer to get to you than a salad. If you order a burger with fries and you know you want ranch, order it right when you order and not as I set the plate in front of you. That’s five extra steps when I already had five things I was headed to do. And please

Are big tables really so bad?

I actually like big tables because they’re usually having fun.

Is it really that hard to split bills?

It’s super easy. I don’t like it when people tell me at the beginning because it can be difficult to keep track of who got what drink. It’s an extra step, basically. I’d rather do it at the end. They can write their names on the receipt and give me their cards – that’s great.

Worst comment you’ve ever gotten?

It’s not the comments that get me, it’s the guys who stare and don’t try to hide it. They can be facing the wall and will physically turn themselves around as I walk out of my section over to the bar or the kitchen.

It’s uncomfortable. OK, so you’re not giving me bad pick-up lines, but come on.

What should every diner know?

I wish that everyone would work as a server at least once in their life. For example, we’re sitting here [this interview took place at Carver’s over breakfast] and our server is losing money. She could have sat another table, maybe two. We should tip by the hour because we’re not ordering anything else while we’re having conversation. Time is money. I had a group sit at one of my tables the other night from 5:30 to 10:30. They spent $50 and tipped $8. I could’ve made $40 off that table with different customers.

How much are you judging us for what we’re ordering?

I’m not really judging what you’re ordering, but ordering the meatloaf with extra gravy and a Diet Coke is pretty funny. I always want to ask, “What are you drinking it for, the taste? Who are you kidding?” I don’t really care what you order, but I’m happy to get it for you.

Farmington Hill country-rocks on with album release

T

wo songs into the latest record from Farmington Hill and you’ll catch onto a lyrical theme of defiance, stubbornness and acceptance of your own flaws with a reluctance to change. It’s the perfect attitude for the characters in the songs on this rock record, and the perfect attitude for songs from this band, a band that boldly boasts a punk-rock sneer and sound while exploring outlawcountry narratives. It’s a brash, catchy and aggressive record: slick yet raw, musically- and lyricallyintelligent as it bleeds the energy of punk along with the rowdiness of alternative country. Farmington Hill will celebrate the release of “More Rock than Eagle Block” on Friday night with a performance at El Rancho.

The songs come from frontmen Paul Iudice and Erik Nordstrom, veterans of the Durango rock scene whose other and past bands have created classic hardcore punk, garage rock and country via an exploration of weird and wonderful, dark and depressing tales of life.

“I think there’s a lot of tongue and cheek with both our songs; we’re about the same age, we grew up with the ’80s punk scene, and have a lot of similar influences,” Nordstrom said.

“I know I sometimes take a point of view that’s not necessarily my own, but we can maybe, on some level, relate to that defiant attitude that things are going to work out however they work out.” Nordstrom was quick to add in a dry, sarcastic manner that those themes could also be the result of being middle-aged in a rock band, with perhaps a personal air of slight anger at the world.

There have been a handful of changes to Farmington Hill since Nordstrom and Iudice first came together playing songs that didn’t fit into their other bands. A record was recorded and released, this record was recorded, and the original rhythm section left. Mary Hess joined

on bass, Logan Miller took over on drums, local musician and producer Dan Szabo put the finishing touches on this project and Farmington Hill rocks on. It’s all a partnership and in-band relationship that lap-steel player Kelly Rogers proudly

calls “extraordinary.” It shows when you’re watching the band; work went into this record, a lot of it. Yet the music, their brand of cow-punk and country rock (heavier on the rock), comes together naturally. It’s reflected in the audible and visual fun witnessed when listening to or

watching the band.

“Bubba and I started this thing a long time ago not really wanting it to necessarily be a band. Then Kelly got involved; now we have a different rhythm section, and its been unique because we didn’t start off as part of anything,” Nordstrom said. “It’s been neat to see the camaraderie, the brotherhood, the sisterhood, and I do feel like it’s an evolving project, which is very inspiring to be part of. It’s been an organic process; for me it’s been great to be part of a project that has a natural energy.”

Kid Congo Powers is a legend. A legend that has maybe never fully received his comeuppance. Congo played live with The Gun Club but left before they recorded their debut to join pre-established scenesters The Cramps. He later returned to the psychobilly country punk fuzzers for a spell before joining Nick Cave as a Bad Seed. Since 1997, he has focused primarily on his own projects and has recently released his fourth album for In The Red (“Fuzz,” “Thee Oh Sees,” “Ex-Cult,” amongst countless others) with The Pink Monkey Birds.

“La Araña Es La Vida” is a scorcher of an album from start to finish, recorded in drummer Ron Miller’s Harveyville, Kansas, home/artist retreat/renovated high school gymnasium. Chugging album opener “Psychic Future” sets the tone, with riffs reminiscent of his days with The Gun Club. It should be said that enigmatic Gun Club frontman Jeffery Lee Pierce “forced” Powers into playing guitar, teaching him the open tuning style he’s honed to perfection. Instrumental tracks are staggered throughout, but never slow the pace. Ten minute-plus album closer “Five Points/Howards End/Nasty Hat” sums up the record nicely enough. Highly, highly recommended.

Nasty purity

Remembering the style of Prince

In life, Prince vibrated on a higher frequency, musically and stylistically. In death, he has completed his final and most funkymysterious transformation to the highest level possible – I am thinking that he must have changed into a freaky, lavender, every-gendered wizard-dove.

Prince was a powerfully funky little man: the weird, sweet guru of innocent sexiness and nasty purity, merging fabulous masculinity and fierce femininity. His music espoused Love, and all its attending attributes including spiritual intimacy and sex. Prince’s styles have always supported what he communicated in his music, he was a showman and a true artist in this regard; his appearance referenced his sound and his message and vice versa. He was so arty that he famously changed his name to a symbol for a time; no one had done that before.

Whichever style he was doing at the moment, it was always extremely chic, high-fashion and very much his own.

He emerged in 1979 and 1980 with “Prince” and “Dirty Mind”; his look was half-naked, pervy, dark and punk. His trench coat plus nudity was an almost feminine expression of the punk and New Wave aesthetic. The music was spare and kind of punk rock as well, one with soul and psychedelic influences. This was his raunchiest era, though it later mellowed into a lush sexuality that pulled strength from the most alluring qualities of both men and women.

Prince was fancying up during “Controversy” and “1999” into a New Romantic dandy by the mid 80s, his iconic Purple Rain phase of fancy ruffles, feminine menswear and 1700s style cutaway tailcoats.

These coats were made of fantastical fabrics: cloud-printed, purple shimmer, Jacobean florals; he was royal-looking and beautiful. His stage shows got showier and more complex at this time, too. He crowned Wendy and Lisa his beyond-backup princesses, and the band as well as the stage production reflected this Baroque sensibility.

Throughout his prolific career of 39 studio albums (sometimes two a year) in 37 years, Prince kept true to his key, early styles: decorated and fancy menswear, nudity-as-garment with a bared chest, lace, the colors white, purple and gold. Rich and luxurious textures like shiny silk, metallic brocades,

fur, sequins and gems bedazzled his clothing.

His shoes had heels and were very 18th century.

Prince stuck to this core aesthetic over decades, a true sign of an enduring and authentic personal style. Onstage he was amazing; I got to see him twice. Each time, the whole band was dressed to the nines, theatrical and all harmonious with each other, musically and stylistically.

Prince moved in Love as well as singing about it and continually supported, encouraged and collaborated with emerging bands and musicians: Wendy and Lisa, Sheila E., Morris Day and the Time, the New

Power Generation. He knew how art, music and style can grow and flourish when shared freely.

Prince’s style toward the end of his life got looser and more bohemian: the Jheri-curled bouffant relaxed into a soft Afro, his diamonds and pearls turned to love beads. Nehru suits, dashiki shirts and the styles and materials of India suited this mature and mellowed Prince. He seemed serene, his simplified style speaking to a Love more Sixties than Sexy in inspiration. The eyewear reflected this sensibility, his big, round, purple glasses were even more symbolic and artful with the addition of the “third eye” lens over his forehead, worn at the time of 2014’s “Art Official Age.” What did he see through this extra eye? I wish I knew. On the cover of “Hit n Run Phase 2” from 2015, and also while touring, he wore shield-shaped aviator glasses.

Both of these glasses give me chills; they now seem to be a prescient symbol of Prince’s looking beyond his earthly future.

It is certain that Prince’s current milieux is fabulously sensual, royally lavish and full of the everlasting Love and peace that he has been explaining to us with his guitar and lyrics for the last 37 years.

There are doves and beautiful scarves everywhere and some of my people, too. I get comfort from imagining my beloved dead hanging out together in the afterlife, Prince and Bowie are trading jumpsuits and doing each other’s eyeliner, and my friend Gabe Doelger is there offering them both funky finds from Heavens Thrift Store.

Prince thanks him and smiles sweetly, puts on his Third Eye shades and gazes out into a new, purple sequined landscape.

How Animas Brewing Company gets brewpubbing right

W

hen you walk into Animas Brewing Company the first thing you’ll notice is the 10-barrel brewhouse and you’ll probably see the “Gone Fishing” sign hung on the steps to the brew deck. It’s not hard to believe, because during operating hours you’ll rarely see anyone working in the brewery itself. It’s so clean and stoic looking in the background, like a statue or monument. From my perspective, that is the dream: brew once a week, maybe twice if it’s the middle of summer, and spend the rest of your free time fishing (or any of the millions of other things to do here in Durango). But running restaurant and a brewery at the same time is another thing entirely.

If you go into Animas Brewing Company (ABC) enough, you will see that Scott is a fixture at his own bar, mostly watching Philly sports and talking fishing with the regulars. And there’s a lot of regulars.

The bar at ABC feels homey, set up perfectly for watching sports, chatting with your bartender and the other regulars, or meeting people from out of town. What you don’t see is the 5 a.m. brew days, cleaning kegs, covering for cooks, servers or bartenders who don’t show up, on top of all the other bullshit that comes with running a business.

“That sign is a lie: I definitely don’t go fishing as much as I used to, or nearly as much as I wish I could,” Scott said.

When it comes to the NHL, Scott’s a devoted Flyers fan and hates the Penguins with a passion (Scott assures me that Penguin fans are still welcome; to paraphrase Michael Jordan, even Penguin fans drink beer). He still has a lot of pride for his home city of Philadelphia, so why move out West? Why not have cheesesteaks or pizza on the menu? What the hell is a “pasty”? I took a morning off from my usual brewery work to follow Scott and his assistant brewer Jed Smith and asked some of these questions.

“I hated the winter and never wanted to see a cold, dark, icy, East Coast winter again, so I moved to Phoenix. But I went on a trip to Silverton and realized I missed seasons.”

Since moving to Colorado, Scott has brewed all around Durango before opening his own place. He’s brewed or helped out at half the breweries in town so he knows the brewery life. And the food at ABC, on the surface, seems like the typical brewery food: burgers, fried fusion appetizers, and salads. But there’s a lot stuff on the menu you won’t find anywhere else in Durango.

“When making the menu, the first rule was no pizza. I don’t care if the pizza in Durango is good or bad, we just don’t need another pizza place. It seems

“The second rule was we wouldn’t do something that people could easily make at home, or something that you can walk into any place in town and get.

You can make a pasty or one of our burgers at home, but it’s gonna take you a lot of prep time and cost a lot more money.”

So you won’t see french fries or normal sandwiches on the menu, either. Instead you see 50/50 burgers, made with blended meats (your normal ground beef, mixed with corned beef, sausage or brisket), fresh cut chips and the pasties? Well, that’s where you see the real theme of the brewery: it’s mostly English tradition meets Rocky Mountain attitude.

“A pasty is a traditional Cornish mining food, and being in a part of the country steeped in mining history and culture, it made sense to do it in Durango,” he said. “It’s also not just something you can make at home.”

This also carries over into the beer. The mainline beers are more of an English style than you’ll get anywhere else in town (malty, full-bodied beers in straight forward styles: red, brown, black, porter, stout, IPA, etc.), with a few German seasonal styles thrown in to cover all the bases. And there’s always a one-off or limited release that gives ABC its Colorado

flair (right now the Farmhouse is pretty top notch).

The biggest thing when drinking the beer at ABC and when talking to Scott about beer, is you can tell he knows what he’s doing and cares a lot about beer.

They’ve been open just over a year, but the flavors of the beer are in full stride: no off flavors or flaws to speak of, but good clean beer on every tap with plenty of character to stand out in Durango. The success, I think, comes from the years brewing other people’s beer as a production brewer.

Even though his is among them, when asked about the massive amount of breweries opening, Scott had a good, simple perspective: “I welcome the competition, and camaraderie, but there’s an old saying that applies, ‘Just cause you can cook an awesome marinara or grill a mean steak, doesn’t mean you should open a restaurant.’

A lot of people don’t realize how much work goes into doing day after day: it’s a lot of work and it’s not for everybody.”

Tatanka Means

»» The popular Native American actor spills some secrets of the trade

Tatanka Means is a Native American actor, stand-up comedian and motivational speaker from Chinle, Arizona. The son of famed political activist and actor Russell Means, Tatanka represents the Oglala Lakota, Omaha and Navajo Nations. His recent movie credits include “Saints & Strangers,” a miniseries on the National Geographic channel chronicling the true encounters between Pilgrim settlers and Native Americans, and “Tiger Eyes,” a film based on the YA book by beloved author Judy Blume. Means also performs stand-up comedy with the Native American Comedy group 49 Laughs Comedy.

We spoke to him about being pigeonholed as a native actor and what he learned from his dad.

You were raised on the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation. Was it difficult to break into the entertainment industry from there?

We didn’t have a theater, auditorium/ stage or any performing arts classes. But I think as native, indigenous people, we’re natural storytellers. We have oral traditions and teachings. Although those performing outlets weren’t available to me growing up, the instinct to show and tell a story was always there.

Russell Means, your father, was a revered political activist and actor.

How did he inspire you?

My father has been one my biggest influences, supporters and inspirations. Yes, he was all of those things – but to me he was just my dad.

Parents dish out a lot of advice, and usually we take in some of what they say. But I always followed his advice, even when I didn’t agree.

In the end he was always right. He maintained a good balance between all of his titles, but at the base of it all was his committed spirituality, belief and faith. That’s what was most inspiring to me, as his son.

Do you ever feel pigeonholed into playing roles that center around you being the “Native American character”?

It’s who I am in Hollywood’s eyes, so realistically, that’s who I’m going to play; unless we write and produce our own movies and series ourselves, which a lot of people are doing now so they can have roles with more variety.

I hope I can continue to break the molds as my career progresses. But I’m honest and real with myself, and that’s what you have to be, or else you’ll be let down and rejected. In this business you need a strong spine.

You’ve spoken about being proud to be drug and alcohol free. Why is that important to you?

That was a personal choice I made in my early 20s, and it wasn’t so I could be a role model, but just so I could help myself. I had to learn from my mistakes. There was a negative pattern happening, and I recognized it and decided I had the power to change those circumstances and alter my life for the better. It was one of the best decisions I ever made for myself, my future and my family.

Tell me about your role on “Saints and Strangers” – what was the filming experience like? Why should people watch the show?

We filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, for three months last summer. It was a good experience all around. One of the things I’m proudest of is the language we spoke in the miniseries; I think when young kids watch it, not only will it be educational, but it will inspire them to learn and speak their language, no matter what tribe they’re from.

We spoke Abenaki, which is Eastern Algonquin. It’s really a beautiful language, with so many colorful sounds and words.

I have a leading role in “Saints & Strangers,” playing a real historical figure called Hobbamock. He was the war chief of his tribe and adviser to the famous Wampanoag chief, Massasoit. This is a period piece about an era is the 1600s, and it tells the story of the arrival of the Mayflower and the relationships between the immigrated Europeans and Indian nations during the Plymouth settlement.

The miniseries shows a different, more truthful story that hasn’t actually been seen before on screen.

Nobody buys books anymore ... right?

Maria’s Bookshop is thriving in a digital landscape. But how?

ndependent bookstores struggled through the last couple decades, while big box superstores – more convenient and less expensive – took over. Pessimists quickly sounded the indie store’s death knell; but they were wrong. Independent bookstores have been making a comeback. Lucky for those of us in Durango, Maria’s Bookshop is no exception. In fact, they’ve been flourishing all along; “People realized what we offer is a hand-cultivated choice of books,” said Andrea Avantaggio, co-owner of Maria’s. “The whole thing about people being enamored about getting access to every book ever written ... that’s sort of over, because you still have to find a good one. And that’s what we do.” Maria’s is celebrating Independent Bookstore Day this Saturday, with several in-store events.

Do Durangoans even read in between ski runs at Purgatory or traipses into the woods? The answer to both of these questions is a resounding yes. “Our success in Durango has to do with the fact that we have a very supportive community,” said Avantaggio. “People don’t just end up

The overwhelming selection in a corporate box shop like Barnes and Noble or online at Amazon can be a detriment to the reading process – too many choices. Smaller bookstores more carefully select books that fit their customers’ requirements, catering to a person’s specific tastes and needs. A larger store needs more employees to run it, so staff members are often less knowledgeable about their product (quantity over quality). “We get to hire people who are passionate about reading, who have been devouring books their whole lives,” said Avantaggio.

And a lot of people associate a vibrant indie bookstore with a thriving community; it becomes a gathering spot, like your favorite coffee shop.” The residents of Durango aren’t living in the suburbs, and most enjoy walking downtown, mingling with fellow townsfolk, soaking in the culture and supporting home-grown commerce. And if Colorado has a reputation for anything (besides cannabis consumption and an excess of breweries), it is our penchant for purchasing goods locally. “Durango is great for any independent business – not just bookstores – because it’s imperative to people here to buy local,” said Roger Cottingham, Maria’s community relations manager.

Despite potential stereotypes, Durango does not exclusively house outdoorsy bros who would rather camp than pick up a book.

What kind of books are most popular here?

What’s the deal with Durango book clubs?

A lot of regionally-specific stuff; regional guide books, western literature and history, books about mountain men and women who lived in mining camps. We’re also a very athletic and sports-minded community, so books about cycling. We’re environmentally conscious; our travel, adventure and nature writing sections are always solid. Writers like Edward Abbey, Terry Tempest Williams. Durangoans like reading about people who have taken off on the road doing crazy, adventurous things in unheard of places.

They’re all self-generated, but they can register with Maria’s and we’ll have 15 percent discounted books available to them. Over 100 groups are currently registered. Some are more active than others; there’s an ebb and flow. But we try to connect people looking for reading groups, and send names to those groups who are open to new members. The Women’s Resource Center has an open reading group, though most of the others are much more intimate.

Is there anything you couldn’t sell here?

I have to say, people don’t ask for a lot of Danielle Steele. I don’t think I’ve ever ordered her books. I’m not proud or snotty – I’m happy to help people read whatever they want. But some books that show up on the [New York Times] best-seller list that you can get at the grocery market for 30 percent off ... our customer base is just not looking for that in our shop.

Avantaggio admits booksellers visiting from other Colorado towns express envy at Maria’s ability to sell a diverse range of books; other bookstores have much narrower markets, in terms of the genres they can stock.

readers,” said Avantaggio, “But we’ve been hearing over and over again – people come in here to confess – they don’t love their e-readers. We all spend so much time in front of screens, but a screen can get in between your experience with a book. It gets in the way of getting lost in the story.” The exhausting pace of our modern busy lives often results in lazy Netflix binging; film and TV generally require less effort on a person’s behalf than books do. You don’t have to imagine anything; you see what the characters look like, what they’re wearing, the locations they’re in. With a book, all that must be invented inside your head.

You have to work harder.

Kirbie Bennett, a senior at Fort Lewis College, has worked at Maria’s (his “dream job”) for almost a year. “I’m working with some of the brightest people I’ve ever met,” said Bennett. Hard-copy books are his preference, despite his millennialstanding at age 28: “I’m not opposed to e-books. I understand the convenience – but my interest dwindled. I prefer something tangible, and see that as taking a break from the rabbit hole of electronic hallucinations.” Bennett has noticed far more adults reading e-books (including his own mother) than younger people. Perhaps it’s the novelty; the older generation spent most of their lives without digital exposure, whereas millennials grew up “digital natives,” so to us it’s all par for the course.

around Europe two years ago; but hasn’t picked it up since. “In terms of finding quick information, we definitely use the Internet rather than sitting down with a nonfiction book,” said Doenges. “But there’s also a high degree of book reading in the peer groups I spend time with.” Doenges says many of her college-age Durango friends and acquaintances don’t have TV, cable or WiFi in their homes. Of course, those things are expensive.

But Doenges also believes “Durango fosters the kind of outdoors, handson environment where people don’t want to be watching TV all the time.”

Doenges is planning a rafting trip along the Grand Canyon, and says her group of friends will be bringing a box full of books with them.

Cult filmmaker John Waters crudely (but sensibly) advised: “If you go home with somebody and they don’t have books, don’t [bleep] ’em!”

“The books we love tell the story of who we are,” said Avantaggio. “If someone comes in your house and all your books are on your phone or ereader – what can they look at? People want to tell their story, so they collect books. They want to be reminded. In our transient world, there is a concreteness to saying: these are the most important books in my life because they tell me the story of who I am and who I’m becoming.”

The one-on-one customer interaction provided by indie bookstores like Maria’s is a powerful responsibility: you might be helping someone find their next favorite book. It could become a huge part of their life. Good thing the team at Maria’s is up for the challenge.

A drive-in movie – what could be better on a warm summer evening? Most of us can’t afford an excess of costly movie tickets, but the drive-ins are usually cheaper because of “double” features; you pay the same price you might normally shell out for a regular ticket, but stay for back-to-back films. Most people attend films with friends or partners, but theaters aren’t exactly conducive to socializing. Whispering to your buddy in the seat next to you isn’t illegal, but it’s severely frowned upon.

You’ll get shhhs or passive-aggressive head-turns. And texting is an absolute no-no, if you possess any sense of human decency. But at the drive-in, you can text to your little heart’s content. You can show up with family and friends and talk as loudly as you want in your car. It’s a much more sociable experience. You can even bring a picnic basket and share a delectable meal for about 1/14th of the price of movie theater popcorn. You can drink booze and smoke (but maybe don’t broadcast that). You can bring your dog. And if you’re too lazy to pack your own grub, there’s always the concession stand.

A lot of people take dates to the theater – but it’s not a great place to get frisky, especially on Friday or Saturday night when the movies are crowded. Drive-ins, though, allow for a lot more cuddling and conversation.

You can get intimate. You can even make out.

Sure, voyeurs might take a peek as they walk past your car, but screw ’em. (Just kidding. Be considerate. There could be children there).

Speaking of children: They’re often the worst part about the movies. Kids are constantly asking questions (“Who is that, Mommy? Where’s he going? Why did he say that? I have to go potty.”) They kick the back of your chair (like many adults). But at the drive-ins, kids have plenty of room to run around when they get bored. They can even chit-chat. And should they get all tuckered out, you can put them to sleep in the backseat and begin enjoying your newfound, childless freedom.

or those of you DGO readers who have been following “Seeing Through the Smoke” closely, you might recognize that this column is, in some respects, little more than a decorated reading list.

Books are micro-units of pure consciousness; they take us places in our minds that are as real at the moment as almost any experience we might have in our daily travels.

There are books that we can look to in order to remind us of certain elements of our relationship to the rest of humanity, the world around us, and the universe at large.

Among these is Be Here Now, by Ram Dass, published in 1971.

When Timothy Leary was at Harvard in the early 1960s, he had a partner in his work to explore and spread consciousness through psychedelics, one Richard Alpert, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and fellow professor and lecturer. Leary, Alpert and their compatriots took a clinical approach to the ingestion of psilocybin, LSD and other chemicals, distributing them and taking them themselves in order to better understand their effects and potential uses.

Among their successes was the Marsh Chapel Experiment. Undertaken under the direct auspices of

Harvard graduate student Walter N. Pahnke on Good Friday in 1962 on the campus of Boston University, the double-blind experiment, using vitamin B as a placebo and psilocybin (the psychoactive chemical in “magic” mushrooms) as the test chemical, the experiment sought to discover whether subjects could experience a “religious experience” as a result of ingesting an entheogen. The experiences of the test group were so powerful as to seem comic in contrast to the control group. Follow-up interviews with participants decades later revealed a lasting effect and a described that day as being of “a genuine mystical nature and characterized it as one of the high

points of their spiritual life.”

Alpert also reaped the benefits of his use of entheogenic compounds: ego death and its accompanying behavior changes, mystical wonder, camaraderie with his fellow psychonauts and journeys to parts of the mind that he, in his life as Boston-bred neurotic overachiever, never imagined.

But, along with Leary, Alpert was relieved of his professorship at Harvard in 1963 and within a few years, had fallen into a state of malaise, unsatisfied with the now-predictable results of his trips and the extreme discomfort associated with the reintegration to his daily life. It was under these conditions that he chose, in

1967, to undertake a voyage to India, an experience he describes in Be Here Now, his spiritual autobiography that details his trek through the subcontinent which resulted in his name change to Ram Dass, which translates as “servant of God.” His pilgrimage involved the practice of rigorous yoga asanas, meditation, subservience to others with more experience along the path of consciousness and an ever-evolving recognition of the benefits that this service had not only on those he sought to help, but on him, as well. Since its publication three-and-a-half decades ago, Dass has donated millions of dollars of proceeds to his various foundations.

The path of consciousness that Ram Dass travels is that great interior universe described in the teachings of Jesus as “The Kingdom Within,” as “Ein Sof” in Judaism, as “Fana” in Islam, as “Yoga” in India, as “Nirvana” by Buddhists, as Tao, Dreamtime, the Oversoul, the word, the good, the beautiful. It is the destination of spiritual journeys undertaken by great seekers in nearly all traditions. It is a place inside all of us, that spark of beauty ignited aeons ago, that spark of life, of love, that spark we see when we look deep into another’s eyes and see ourself reflected back, in the way the wind dances through a meadow of knee-high grass, or in the nightsong of peepers in the spring.

‘Room 237’

Blue Dream is a 50/50 hybrid whose parents are a cross between Blueberry, which is a heavy indica, and Super Silver Haze, which is mostly sativa. The example I have has an extremely high THC content (coming in at just over 25 percent) and packs enough CBDs and terpenes to give it a great overall effect.

The effects This strain is interesting to me because it gives you an almost immediate hazy-feeling head high as well as a very mind-relaxing, all-over body high.

I really enjoyed the dreamy euphoria that sets in at about the 15-minute mark, and I like the fact that the high lasted several hours. Until now, I didn’t like the comedown from Blue Dream, but the local grower who supplied this pheno finished it beautifully, and it faded away comfortably.

The most unusual thing about the doc is the lack of talking heads. Several oddball characters get interviewed, but their voices are assembled on top of actual scenes from “The Shining.” You practically get to rewatch the entire film, while never glimpsing the faces of the cinematic theorists.

If you’re high enough, you’ll definitely believe each and every conspiracy suggestion (which makes it more fun).

Two of the theories make definite sense: one guy says “The Shining” is about the Native American genocide and another says it’s a metaphor for the Holocaust. There is plenty of evidence for both claims. Three other readings of the film

It definitely has a sweet berry smell, but you’ll also notice a slight minty earth smell, too.

The taste Sweet with berries, and a bit of cream on the exhale The final verdict I finally get it, but it took the right Blue Dream grown properly to change my mind. I smoked this before meeting some friends, and really loved the energizing euphoric feeling it gave me. It’s a great all-around strain for just about everything. Because it’s such a clearminded strain, it would be very good for medical conditions, but I just liked it for getting high and being with people.

I’m glad I finally found a Blue Dream I can love.

“Room 237” celebrates the film nerd. Kubrick may or may not have littered his horror flick with metaphorical bread crumbs for audiences to gather (though he was a genius with impeccable attention to detail, so I wouldn’t put it past him); what matters is “The Shining” has come alive in the minds of countless viewers. Once a piece of art is released into the world, it no longer belongs to the artist – it becomes open to an audience’s wild interpretations. WE create the meaning. Another theorist believes images in the movie invoke the Greek myth of the Minotaur, and the last one alleges you can understand “The Shining” by watching it backward and forward simultaneously.

What is it?

“The Shining” is a mysterious film already, and a prime head-scratcher for discerning stoners. Does Jack descend into madness on his own, or is The Overlook Hotel actually haunted? Why has Jack seemingly been there before, and how come he shows up in the hotel’s photo from the ’20s?

What’s with the creepy, blink-of-an-eye oral sex scene between a man in a bear suit and a butler? “Room 237” doesn’t answer these questions, per se; but it does take a deep dive into what Kubrick’s artistic intentions might have been.

If you appreciate bizarre documentaries, you need to check out “Room 237.” Directed by Rodney Ascher, the film is an intense examination of the potential “secret meanings” behind Stanley Kubrick’s horror-thriller “The Shining.” (Con: you have to love “The Shining” in order to find this interesting. Pro: you should already love “The Shining;” it’s a brilliant psychological classic about a bad marriage, plus it proves that you should never disturb your husband while he’s working).

What to do about the scourge of our nation, Fox News?

My father is a friendly, kind, allaround good guy. We get along well and always have. But I now have to avoid all political discussions with him. He was always a bit socially conservative, but now he gets a lot of batshit crazy and simply dumb ideas from the scourge of our nation today: Fox News. How can we stop the dumbing down of our society by Fox News, Dan? We have to do something about this malady!

Anonymous “Anonymous is right – Fox News is a malady, one that I’ve often joked is worse than Ebola,” said the documentary filmmaker Jen Senko.

“It destroys families and has torn apart the country. That’s pretty powerful.”

Here’s what Senko did about it: She made “The Brainwashing of My Dad,” a terrific documentary exploring how Fox News and other right-wing media turned her mild-mannered, nonpolitical father into a ranting, raving, rightwing fanatic.

“We need to stigmatize ‘Faux News,’” Senko said. “I make it a point when I walk into a restaurant or some other public place and they have on Faux News of politely asking them to turn it off. I write to news outlets when they try to emulate Fox and complain.”

But how do you get your own dad to turn off Fox News?

“Speaking to loved ones is important, but it’s difficult,” Senko said.

“You have to approach them in a calm way, starting the conversation on neutral ground. Sometimes just getting them out of the house and away from the TV helps. There is a group called Hear Yourself Think (hearyourselfthink.org) that focuses on deprogramming Fox News viewers. You will find plenty of advice there. But if you can sit down with your loved one and tell them you are concerned about their anger and their worry and you feel that

I am a trans man and I have no love life. But I did just hook up with a friend two nights ago. It was the first time I’ve had sex in more than a year.

My problem is that it was a “onetime thing.” I was hoping to be FWB at least. I’m furious with myself for giving that away for what amounted to a hookup, and thoroughly sorry for myself for it being a “one-time thing,” because it nearly always is. I feel thoroughly unlovable and dejected right now. I was raised a Boston Irish Catholic, and I have PTSD from my parents being difficult. In a backward way, I hope the issue for others is tied to the fallout from my upbringing – because that’s something everyone has problems with, and those things, while not entirely fixable, are manageable and not so visible. I worry it’s not that, though. I worry my being trans is the first problem a potential partner sees. I am a man with a twat – a forlorn, underused twat at that.

Not Often Picked, Everyone Not Interested Sexually Buck Angel is a public speaker, a filmmaker, an activist and a trans man, NOPENIS, who famously and fearlessly bills himself as “the man with a pussy.” I passed your letter on to him because who better to answer a question from a man with a twat than the man with a pussy?

“Anyone who hasn’t had sex in more than a year is going to find it scary to get back out there and start

again,” said Buck. “And starting again with a body that you might not be 100 percent comfortable with yet?

That’s even scarier. The first thing that NOPENIS needs to hear – and really believe – is that he is lovable.

And he is, even if he doesn’t know it yet.”

The second order of business: You gotta stop beating yourself up over that one-night stand. Take it from Buck, your fellow trans man, and take it from me, your fellow Irish Catholic queer: You didn’t do anything wrong, you didn’t give anything away – hell, you were doing something right.

“Hookups can be important for understanding your body sexually,” Buck said. “So NOPENIS shouldn’t be mad at himself. We learn and grow from our experiences, even if they’re bad ones. And here’s what I learned from my first experiences in the gay men’s world of sex: Hookups are the way it’s done. I was not prepared for that because I’d had sex only with women before my transition. That was hard for me, too, at first. But what I learned was that I wasn’t being rejected, even if it was only a one-night thing. I was being accepted in a way I wasn’t used to.”

Finally, NOPENIS, you’ve got to stop seeing your body and your twat as problems. It’s the only body you’ll ever have, and it’s a body some will find attractive and some won’t. Some guys will be attracted to your body (and you, ideally) for its differences – not attracted to your body (ditto) despite its differences.

“NOPENIS absolutely shouldn’t count himself out just because he’s trans,” said Buck. “The world is different now, and many people are attracted to trans men sexually. He just needs to learn to love himself and to have sexual confidence, because people find that attractive. And he should continue to experiment and continue to embrace new experiences!”

Watching these two walk down the aisle will be like watching two drunk drivers speed around a closed racetrack. Maybe they’ll crash, maybe they won’t; maybe they’ll die in a fire, maybe they’ll get out alive. But so long as no one else is gonna get hurt, why risk your own neck trying to pull these [bleep]ers over?

‘Fight Like a Girl’ screening at the DAC If you’ve ever wondered how and why some women get into the sport of boxing – “into” as in doing, not watching or walking around the ring in a skimpy bikini holding the round number – here’s your chance to see it up close and personal.

The documentary “Fight Like a Girl’ will be shown Wednesday night at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. The film, by Jill Morley and shot over a period of five years, follows Morley as she trains for the New York Golden Gloves. As she trains, she becomes entrenched in the culture of female boxing and discovers that for many of the women, boxing is a way to deal with issues of abuse, trauma, mental illness and healing.
