Eyes, ears and hearts: What I learned about storytelling

A

s humans, we’ve been telling stories for millions of years, cavemen coming back from a hunt and saying to their old ladies, “You’ll never believe the lip this mammoth gave me today.”

More than anything, the stories we tell connect us as people. They share human experience, they connect dots of commonalities, they can tell us of someone else’s similar struggles, fears, triumphs and challenges. Further, when we tell stories, when we allow ourselves to open up and share our experiences, to be vulnerable in front of others, whether it’s one person or 200, it gives people a chance to glimpse into our souls, to feel our hearts. Stories link us long after the telling.

I was honored to have participated in The Raven Narratives last weekend in Cortez and Durango, the storytelling series created and produced by Tom Yoder and Sarah Syverson.

The beautiful thing about the seven storytellers I shared the stage with was that they were not performers or professional storytellers. They are teachers and journalists and small business owners and photographers, people who found the courage to share their experience, some telling their stories more or less for the first time.

I remember Chris Blankenship, the best pure storyteller of the bunch, and his intensity and pregnant and dramatic pauses that underscored an eerie story of hiking the Colorado Trail. Or Jane Dally who, in her subtle cowboy accent, cast an unforgettable character from the ranch hand wrangler she worked with years ago who pushed her beyond what she thought was possible. Or Maddy Butcher, who was cruising along in her story but got tripped up momentarily with emotion, picturing the two lambs she picked up on the side of a highway, an image she communicated with her heart more than her words. Or Tom Yoder, whose artful story arc crescendoed in palpable, heartfelt, decades-long grief from tragically losing his father

at a young age, and ended with a tearjerking takeaway of hope and encouragement. I remember McCarson Jones and how her story spanned decades and ended in an African hut full of snakes and fire. But I’ll never forget watching her watch and listen to the other storytellers, her face beaming with the biggest smile I’ve seen or eyebrows climbing off her face in surprise or empathetic consolation. Or Katie Burford and her black tank, knee-length black shorts, Frida Kahlo socks and combat boots, which were the perfect uniform for her story of courage and reckoning. Or Dan Jenkins and his energy and enthusiasm and nearly-permanent mile-wide smile that made him the kind of guy you can so easily picture when he was 9.

I learned this weekend that storytelling often has little to do with facts and events. Our stories don’t need to be sensational or exceptionally riveting. Life lessons are great, but not mandatory.

What matters is the heart of the storyteller, a heart that says in so many ways, “Here is a piece of me, of my past. Here are my shortcomings, my heartaches and struggles. Here is the pain I’ve carried for years and years; here is a time I learned and grew, overcame, fought and won.” Yes, we find those things in the facts of their stories and could see them if the stories were written. But more so, we find them in their moments of tears and emotion, the times they choke up unexpectedly, when they find their composure and carry on. We find them in the silence of a pause, or a hand in a pocket and eyes drawn to the floor, a gesture or sound effect.

The group I got to tell stories with has been beaming ever since, discussing how much the experience meant to them, how sharing what was shared was liberating, empowering, enlightening.

That was from the storytellers, which says nothing of the exponential and lasting impact their stories had on the eyes and ears of those who listened. Some stories are just impossible to forget and some things in life last forever.

Air conditioning Love it My mom and her seven siblings grew up in the sweltering heat and humidity of Houston, in a house the size of most modern-day American kitchens.

They did this, mind you, with only the help of open windows and fans.

Staying at my grandmother’s muggy, stifling house as a child, I decided that no matter what I did, air conditioning would be central. I assured myself at a young age that nearly every bit of happiness there is to be had in life begins with air conditioning.

And oh how true. I love driving through the desert in 100-degree temperatures, feeling the heat on the closed windows, chilling out to music, feeling the cold breeze pulsing from the vents and feeling sorry for the jackrabbits and lizards for not being so lucky.

I love checking in to a hotel after a day of whatever – a long day hike, an unbearable work conference, 10 hours on the interstate – closing the shades, getting takeout delivered to my room, watching some trashy docudrama and cranking the AC until it’s five degrees cooler than I’d ever think of having it at home.

In hot and humid climates, the commonplace of air conditioning has improved the quality of life for millions, many of them otherwise poor. I know it uses energy (perhaps?!) unnecessarily and can perpetuate human attitudes of entitlement, making us soft and ill-equipped for life outside. But our ability to control the climates of our enclosed spaces is nothing short of a triumph of humanity.

Hate it You’re sitting on your bed on a summer evening – tank top, iced drink. It’s warm, but not unbearable. Wafting through the windows – crickets, lush summer smells. Then, someone is too hot. The AC goes on. The windows get closed. No more crickets. No more soft night air.

I’m not a fan of heat. Quite the opposite. But I hate how AC blocks out the world. I hate the irony of air conditioning a stuffy hotel room on a cool night because the windows are hermetically sealed.

The worst thing about air conditioning is how it leads to over-air-conditioning, to being stuck in freezing cold restaurants in clothes that are laughably inadequate. What were you thinking, wearing that gauzy skirt and spaghetti straps? It’s 90 degrees out and you didn’t bring a sweater?

How silly! That ice cold summer seasonal is out of the question. The tip of your nose is cold. You can’t talk to anyone. You need a shot of whiskey, a hot toddy, a blazing fire.

But – here’s more irony – if it’s January and 60 degrees in your house, it’s either because your heater’s broken or you think that wearing three layers, a scarf and fingerless gloves as you type is “romantic.”

No, we crank up the heat until it’s the same temperature that, in summer, makes us lose our minds. We strut around in T-shirts. Can’t we just agree to be a little cold in winter and a little warm in summer?

How did you get into jazz?

I heard Maynard Ferguson in concert in junior high and I had never heard anything like it. Quite honestly, I had a hard time following it. I had played [trumpet] for a few years, but I played music that was written down. I came from a musical family, but I had never heard anything so chaotic before. It intrigued me, but it repelled me a little bit, too. For the person who’s first trying to get into jazz, starting with Maynard or Thelonius Monk may be a mistake.

You might start with Coleman Hawkins – someone who plays beautiful ballads, but also improvises well.

What excites you about jazz?

I think the way we listen to music changes as we get older. When I was younger, I listened to virtuosos. Maynard Ferguson, who could play higher than anybody.

Charlie Parker who would play faster than anybody.

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve moved away from those guys. I find that what impresses people about them is the virtuosity, but I don’t hear them speaking to me.

The guys I didn’t care much for as a kid – Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk – those are the guys who I listen to now because I can hear them speaking, saying something.

How are the tunes organized?

In jazz, you start and end with the head, which is whatever the melody is. A lot of times, it’s an old-time standard. The musicians’ll say, “OK, we’re going to play ‘Softly As In The Morning Sunrise,’” so for the audience’s sake mainly, the band plays a head [hums melody] and everybody goes, “Oh! I know that song! I get it!” and then the band goes where they want to go. The band usually plays the head as a throwaway, “Here you go, but now we’re going to play those same chords, and we’re going to play our own music.”

How best to listen to jazz?

Pick an instrument and follow it. Listen to the same tune four or five times. Say you listen to just the drums. What you’ll find is, in jazz, the drummers are not the timekeeper.

Everyone thinks that they’re for rhythm. Not in jazz. The drummer is there for everything.

Effects, movement. In most jazz, the pianist and bassist are more for time and rhythm.

But even that, when you listen closely, isn’t always true. [Bassist] Ron Carter, when he

knows that the other guys have it, will move around.

Jazz requires trust and faith in your fellow musicians.

When a band is really good and they know they’re playing with good players, they’re going to move to what they call “the outside” because they know that the other guys are going to stay in while they go out.

You can do that with rock, too. I imagine that people enjoy Phish and the Grateful Dead for the same improvisational reasons. Once you start listening closely to jazz, it can change your whole listening world. It can change your ears, change your hearing.

Jazz can be a little chaotic. How do you make sense of everything that’s going on?

You and I are having a thematic conversation. We’re bouncing ideas back and forth. But if you listen to what’s going on in the restaurant, it’s chaos. They’re all talking about different things at the same time.

Coltrane, after he left Miles’ group once they did “Kind of Blue,” wanted to explore further because he really believed that there was a spiritual path for music. So he took it to a very avant-garde, free style where they were no longer playing chord patterns.

They all just did whatever they heard. “A Love Supreme” is the album I’m thinking of. He got to a place that was so chaotic, you just can’t listen. And that’s because there’s no structure. So my thought is this: ecstasy exists, but must have a framework to exist in or it’s just chaos. So in a way, music goes to ecstasy, but only if you can hear the pattern it exists in.

What’s your favorite jazz story?

Miles, when he played with his quintet, wouldn’t tell his guys what key he was going to play in or how fast.

They just had to adapt to him. They’d be out there onstage and he wouldn’t even talk to them. He’d just start a song. If it had been played at 120 beats per minute on the album, he might play it at 280 live.

Miles would assume the bass player is going to get the line, the pianist is going to jump in, drummer’s got it. From that point forward, they’re just talking.

They’re not trying to play what everybody’s used to.

When Coltrane left the quintet in the early ’60s, a young guy named Wayne Shorter was invited to play the next gig. Shorter had never so much as practiced with him before playing this paid gig with him. Miles, before they went onstage, asked Shorter, “Do you know my music?” Shorter said yes. Miles said, “Too bad.” One of my favorite jazz quotes.

Here are three country-punk classics you must own Thank kids in the South reared on punk rock and outsider music for what is now known as alternative country. They were also eyeballing country radio and their parents’ record collection, the result a wealth of great records merging punk and country.

Bad Livers,“Industry and Thrift”

“Well my Daddy didn’t pull out, but he never apologized.” Yes, you were an accident, and no, I’m not sorry you were born. It’s a mood of harsh truth and proud acceptance found throughout the Drive By Truckers’ 2003 release, their fourth, but the first with one-time member Jason Isbell. The aforementioned line from “Marry Me” is that of songwriter Mike Cooley; he and longtime partner Patterson Hood remain exceptional storytellers, as each song is its own short narrative within a big rock ’n’ roll record full of riffs with deep lyrical exploration of incest, unfaithfulness, pride and family.

It’s hard to dig a grave in a downpour. Much less two of them, especially when the dirt in the meadow has turned to mud and those holes keep collapsing on themselves. So goes it in “Old Brown Shoe,” a tune that found its protagonist waiting under the bed, ready to leap out and kill his cheating wife and her lover once their shoes come off, then to drive their corpses out to the country for proper disposal.

It’s good to keep company with the likes of John Hartford and The Butthole Surfers. The Bad Livers’ 1998 release set the ground for members Danny Barnes and Mark Rubin later explorations of roots, rock, old-time, klezmer and bluegrass.

While categorized as a “punk-grass” band, it’s safer to call them “avant-garde” as “Industry and Thrift” embodies a beautiful unpredictable-ness; there’s one song Bill Monroe may call bluegrass, but the rest of the album is weird folk, jazz shuffles and rock, all highlighting the talent of Barnes’ banjo and guitar playing along with Rubin’s solid rhythm section. The opener of “Lumpy, Beanpole and Dirt” sets a mood of not knowing what’s coming next, and “eclectic” is too conservative of a word for this record. It’s a flowing package of originality that screams Jimmy Martin and Captain Beefheart, forged with a DIY ethic.

There’s a gritty tenderness to the record via a couple ballads, all within a big package of Southern chug and rock aggression that comes off like a musical companion to a Faulkner narrative. The album breathes life into characters of a broken-down South, optimistic even though they can’t get one step ahead.

Songwriter and vocalist Rhett Miller must’ve had his heart ripped out over and over, but not enough that he wasn’t able to pen numerous hook-laden songs of emotion and heartache via tales of doomed relationships, marriages full of regret, and self-medication. The Old 97’s 1996 sophomore release makes personal strife a lot of fun. Casual fans may know the stuck-in-your-head track “Doreen,” but this album always begs deeper exploration.

Sonny Smith is, presumably, a very busy man. The multitalented multimedia artist and playwright behind Sonny & The Sunsets has more than a few projects going at any given time. Sonny and company are based out of the artistically-fertile-as-ever San Francisco/Bay Area, and are set to release “Moods Baby Moods,” their sixth album under this particular moniker and fourth for Champaign-Urbana, Illinois-based record label Polyvinyl (Deerhoof, Japandroids, Beach Slang, of Montreal, La Sera, STRFKR).

I’ve grown accustomed to musical shifts and surprises with each Sunsets record.

There are certain stylistic choices, tones and production decisions (lower fidelity maybe?) that make Sunset albums uniquely their own. I’d argue that Sonny has polished and honed the tricky nuance of continuity with little-to-no continuity. His constant is no straightforward sound or constant, and surrounding himself with a rotating, high-caliber cast of supporting players. Smith is joined by Shayde Sartin (The Fresh & Onlys, Kelley Stoltz, Ty Segall, Wooden Wand) and Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs) and the result is an indie/experimental-leaning rock album with elements of post-disco, no wave and hints of synth-sprinkled post-punk. All of this works so well together, making “Moods” arguably the best Sunsets album to date, which, given the extensive and varied catalog, is no small feat.

The power of print and pattern This week we extoll the visual virtue of print and pattern. Vintage and modern fabrics are all wearable examples of graphic art. Such sweet eye candy can be fun and interesting to mix together for a surprisingly flattering and impactful outfit.

For this Style Fetish photo essay we have styled a few men’s and women’s pairings showing examples of print and pattern mixing from subtle to bold. Pieces from different seasons were mixed as well; I think I was subconsciously influenced by our fickle hot-and-cold Colorado spring weather as well as these exuberant prints and patterns.

»» Burgundy and green plaid sharkskin shirt with Moroccan pattern necktie and vintage 1970s burgundy leather jacket. “Sharkskin” isn’t, really – it’s made when two different colors are woven together to create one fabric. Sharkskin has an iridescent sheen that changes in the light. Commonly used in 1950s and 1960s suits (think Frank Sinatra).

Very generally speaking, “prints” are printed onto the fabric after it is produced (florals, some stripes, abstract prints, etc., commonly printed on cotton, rayon or polyester) and “patterns” are controlled by the loom and woven into the fabric as its being made (plaids, houndstooth, herringbone, tweed, etc., commonly woven from wool or cotton.)

»»Prints break up the body’s outline – the silhouettes of your least-favorite bumps and bulges will blend into the background.

»»A print or pattern in a scale that matches your physical scale will look best. Tiny petites should avoid large prints and those with stature can pull off a larger print or pattern. »»Light prints will accentuate and dark patterns will make recede the areas they cover (this applies to solid colors, too).

»»Keep the print size scales either the same OR completely opposite (i.e., medium with medium or tiny with large). Limit one large or extra large scale print to the outfit. Two large scales together can get Clown, quick. »»Keep the colors and tones of both patterns the same or very similar to each other. »»Subtle pinstripes are widely considered a solid, so most any pinstriped garments can be mixed with a print or pattern (except another pinstripe! No pinstriped shirt with pinstriped pants or suit!) »»Same-with-same print or pattern can start you down the road to Clown Town. I recommend avoiding mixing pinstripes, plaids or other patterns together unless they are very different scales (see houndstooth photo). Easiest to mix print with a pattern like a floral with stripe, a polka-dot with a plaid, etc. But, hey, style is supposed to be fun and artistic. Use your instinct and wear what pleases you.

Prints and patterns are more flattering than you may realize. Some can seem a bit much when seen at arm’s length on a hanger, but the print will make sense when seen in context on the body, and the flattering powers print can hold over solid colors becomes apparent.

»»Thin stripes elongate the body when placed vertically and are not unflattering when placed on the horizontal, but avoid wide stripes placed horizontally (unless you’d like to add some visual volume to slim hips and a flat booty).

Careful on the bottom with vertical stripes, too. If the garment too tight your thighs will look like a topographical map.

Try a wide-band stripe skirt with a tiny “ditsy” print top in the same colors.

In mixing print and pattern, there are a few considerations to keep you looking stylish, not clownish.

»»Balance and “ground” it all with solid colors. Keep the multiple patterns to two to three per outfit depending on the scale of the prints and where they appear. The solid color will anchor the eye and tame the patterns.

Behold: The greatest hangover cure ever (and if not, we’ll keep trying)

Before I dove into the book, I had heard of the Ludlow Massacre and had a vague knowledge of the Colorado Coalfield War that led up to that event. “A Terrible Unrest” did a good job establishing a timeline for me, as well as building literary rock cairns that guided me through the escalation of tension to the massacre.

As with any good historical fiction, Duke has done well in fleshing out the time and place using Spiro Andrakis and his family to tell not only the story of the union vs. coal mine owners, but a story of the immigrant experience in mining communities of the early 1900s. Through Spiro, and others, I developed a feeling of understanding (rather than just general knowledge) of the difficult circumstances these people experienced as the union tried to establish a strong presence in the coalfields.

“A Terrible Unrest” succeeds on several levels. It gives you a sense of time and place. It offers views from all sides of the situation and possible, yet credible, views of the mindsets of the decision makers. And, ultimately, is sends you riding on top of the landslide that bottoms out in the Ludlow Massacre.

A good read, for sure, and exactly what I want in my historical fiction.

s I’m writing this, it’s now two days after Taste of Durango and the town is waking up from the collective hangover. For my part, I wasn’t terribly hungover on Monday because I made it to bed by my normal bedtime and did a pretty good job of recovering the next day, with water, coffee, aspirin, ibuprofen and a huge breakfast courtesy of Brenda’s in Bayfield (seriously worth the drive, y’all). But sometimes, the normal stuff just won’t cover a hangover.

The headache, sore muscles, upset stomach, nausea and complete utter shame and self-hatred put you in a hurt locker so deep and dark and scary it seems like you’ll never get out. Sometimes a hangover is so bad, you might as well go to the ER and tell them of your inexplicable symptoms with the hope that modern medicine has a cure.

But even the hospital isn’t much help. Lots of studies of have been done and the effects of dehydration, blood sugar levels, proper pH, etc. all seem to be minimal. Some studies have found that hangovers are “inflammatory immune responses,” so taking anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil and aspirin should help, but what about the nausea, anxiety, vomiting and terrible regret? Even modern medicine has mostly drawn a blank when it comes to a hangover vaccine or cure (think of the cash cow that truly curing or vaccinating for a hangover would be), so advice from most doctors and medical professionals is still “drink in moderation” or “don’t drink,” and we all know that’s not going to happen. So what do we do when we ignore the best advice money can buy? We turn to our folk and witch doctors!

My most effective cure is the following: »»2 32-ounce bottles of Gatorade »»2 8-ounce cans of Red Bull »»1 32-ounce cup »»Lots of ice »»2 Excedrin Migraine »»1,500-2,500 calories of your choosing

Directions Fill the cup with ice and add 1 can of Red Bull,

topping off with Gatorade. Take the 2 Excedrin Migraine as you drink as fast as possible. Refill the cup with ice, fill almost to the top with Gatorade, top with a spritz of Red Bull from the second can. Repeat until all the Gatorade and Red Bull is gone. If you don’t have to pee, fill the cup with water and ice and drink until you do have to pee. Once the bladder has been evacuated, eat 1,500-2,500 calories of whatever kind of food you can find.

There’s something about the combo of electrolytes, caffeine and fluids that just takes the edge off enough to calmly re-evaluate my life’s purpose and stop the cycle of self-hatred.

In doing research for this column, I’ve talked to many other hangover sufferers and the cures vary from person to person. Some I’ve tried myself and can attest to their effectiveness; others sound downright scary and I’ll not endorse the veracity of the claim; and others, still, I will say they work but only under the supervision of a doctor because I cannot encourage the use of prescription drugs for off-label use.

Most people in Durango will tell you about The Cure at Durango Diner, which totally works when paired with a Bloody Mary from El Rancho. Weed is also very very high on the list, which works, but lethargy and increased anxiety may result. Other things on the list include: Xanax (works, but memory and ability to give a shit may ensue) Adderall (totally works, but appetite for more booze may develop), increased salt intake, green juice, prayers, activated charcoal, exorcism, smudging, Netflix and chill and sweating out the alcohol.

But I think the most mentioned cure – and this comes with its own maxim – is this: “the best detox is retox” or “the hair of the dog that bit you, heals the wound” and “pelos de la misma chancha” in Spanish, and in Latin “similia similibus curantur” on and on because almost every culture on Earth has a principle like this. For my money, this probably works the best because every culture on Earth can’t be wrong.

Dramatic animal glamour shots A new exhibition titled “Animalia” at Open Shutter Gallery showcases black-and-white images of domestic and exotic animals by photographer Nine Francois. Francois’ photographs present abstracted views and strange perspectives of the creatures, capturing their essences with grace and humor. The show will be up through July 13. We asked Francois a few questions about her photos.

Are the animals in the series stuffed or real?

How do you find them?

All of the animals are not only alive but within very close proximity without anything between us (no fences, bars, etc.). These are the conditions I need to get the look I want. They are also what makes it very difficult to find my subjects. Sometimes I am approached by sanctuaries, sometimes I find an animal rescue that will work with me, but mostly, I rely heavily on wordof-mouth to find my animals.

All the creatures are on a uniform white background. How do you achieve this aesthetic?

While the photos look like it’s a studio shoot with a white background, they are all shot outside against the sky. I am photographing this series on old fashioned black and white film, and there are exposure and development processes you can do with film that stretch the contrast level. I’ve come up with a formula that turns the sky white.

What is the meaning behind this series for you?

This series works for me on several levels. Aesthetically, I want the viewer to have a connective experience seeing these animals. I want them to fall in love with, be awed by and sense the power of these magnificent creatures. This I get by getting so close when I photograph. For me, there is also a link between animals and the development of language. I watched my kids learn to speak and write in two languages using animal imagery.

Things like alphabet books, flash cards and stuffed bears with whom to share secret conversations, all employ animals to help children verbalize, construct sentences and learn to read.

To reference this connection, I use a square format and a minimalist composition with the dark figure against a white background, all of which echoes wood alphabet blocks or flash cards. When you see a sequence of the animals from a little distance, the succession of dark shapes suggest the ebb and flow of script or a visual rendition of phonics. I like the idea that these images can work both up close and at a distance.

As students learn how to be educators in outdoor environments, FLC’s non-traditional Adventure Education program is an oft-misunderstood field of study

ad news: If you’re just looking to climb, raft or fish for your own personal enjoyment, the Adventure Education program at Fort Lewis College probably isn’t right for you. This course of study goes beyond playing in the rivers, rocks and mountains. Students learn to utilize adventure and nature in their development of interpersonal skills (relationships between two or more people) and intrapersonal skills (the relationship one has with themselves). Students in this program seek professional, sustainable positions, aiming to work with and help others make positive changes in their lives via trees and water and all that natural grandeur.

This year marks the program’s 10th anniversary. It started small and has grown considerably. About 100 to 120 students now major in Ad Ed, with 30 to 40 minoring.

The program exists within the liberal arts context of the college, so students focus on critical thinking, communication skills and writing. For a time, about 75 percent of the major was male, but lately the gender gap has evened out: This fall’s incoming class is 60 percent female. Ad Ed also sees about 10 percent higher out-of-state student enrollment than the rest of FLC, as so few colleges have this type of program. The wild beauty of Colorado is an additional attraction because our particular blend of landscapes makes for an incomparable open-air classroom. Several other schools around the country have outdoor education programs (University of New Hampshire is a big one). But it’s not a major akin to English, business or philosophy – Ad Ed isn’t available at every college, or even most of them. It’s a unique area of study, one that isn’t always understood or taken seriously.

Common misconceptions Bob Stremba, professor and chairman of the Adventure Education Department, was brought in to develop the FLC program in its infancy. There are plenty of mis-

conceptions surrounding this oddball field, and teachers do their best to dispel them. Stremba details one common scenario: “Students come in as freshmen, then go back home for Thanksgiving and have to explain to family members around the dining room table, ‘How is this NOT camping for credit?’”

Lee Frazer, another professor in the program, claims students must be interested in both nature AND human development to flourish. “You have to be patient and good with people,” said Frazer. “You don’t have to be a jock or above-average adventurer. Students come to us if they’re interested in a non-formal education. They just don’t want to teach in a traditional classroom.”

During the program’s first couple years, Frazer had a lot of PR to do on campus, challenging his non-Ad Ed colleagues’ incorrect assumptions about what the major would be. It’s a lot tougher and more serious in intent than many academics might think. “We’ve come a long way,” said Frazer. “Anecdotally, we’ve had a number of students transfer to other programs, because they can’t hack the hard work and the time in this one, or the character and professional expectations we have of students.”

Open Sky Wilderness:

One career track option for FLC Adventure Education grads Durango facility Open Sky Wilderness Therapy, founded in 2006, takes troubled teens and young adults into the wild for therapeutic treatment. Multiple Adventure Education students from Fort Lewis College have either interned with or gone on to work for Open Sky after graduation. We chatted with Danny Frazer, Admissions and Business Development director, about what the job entails.

Non-traditional schooling This kind of education could be classed as “non-traditional.” Students learn how to be educators in adventure environments rather than in formal ones, using outdoor pursuits to promote psychological and behavioral improvements in individuals or organizations. “Experiential” and “project-based” learning is the focus. Cooperation, trust and patience can all be learned on an expedition. Students also study risk, rescue and wilderness first aid.

Senior project topics have included “the stress reduction in nature through dog companionship” and “aesthetic experiences in outdoor experiential education” (aka how the beauty of nature affects a person).

“I was interested in education, but didn’t necessarily want to work in schools, inside a ‘box’ as I saw it when I was younger,” said Kenyon “Tre” Neal, Ad Ed alumnus and current Outdoor Leadership Assistant & Staffing at Indian Head Camp in Pennsylvania. “The program gave me self-confidence in my ability to get up in front of a group and teach something. Initially, I wasn’t a very outwardly sociable, talkative type of person. But throughout the program, we did a lot of practice, group feedback and honing of our teaching skills. They also taught us a lot of outdoor skills like camping and rock-climbing – and then how to teach all those things.” According to Neal, classes were always small (most have around 10 students).

“Lecturing doesn’t necessarily provide transferable learning outcomes,” agreed Grayson Swingle, another Ad Ed graduate who now works at Teton Science Schools in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “The best part of this major was the student-centered learning. Every class involved student discussion more than professors lecturing. We never sat in rows – always circles – because students were the focus of our collective knowledge. Professors only facilitated the learning.” Knowledge often seems best retained experientally; sitting in a classroom can be dry and dull, and many students fall asleep, doodle or text surreptitiously as their professor drones on. But studying something physically, with a group, hands-on, is a much better method for those who are active learners.

“There were times that I could not believe I was in class doing the things I was,” said Rachel Horton, who is graduating from the program this summer. “Like when we were out canoeing on the Green River for 10 days or when we were building quinzhees (snow shelters) last winter. People have always told me, from a young age, that when you love the work you do, it isn’t really a job; I think the same thing applies for education.”

What does “wilderness therapy” mean?

You use what the wilderness provides – a place that’s unpredictable, that has stressors, but also beauty and serenity, things both challenging and nurturing. Then you take young people who are struggling, 13- to 28-year-olds, and couple them with licensed, trained clinicians. It’s not just talking conceptually, it’s actually seeing how they handle setbacks.

Maybe their job is to make fire, but it rained a lot today. How do they handle the frustration? We’re going to observe. It’s a great place to see true colors, the good, the bad and the ugly – then intervene and provide coaching or mentorship guidance to redirect them. We’re trying to make them express themselves in healthy, assertive ways, solve problems and resolve feelings. They come to us not being able to do those things, with maladaptive coping patterns.

What kind of clients come to Open Sky? Our students are all clinically resistant; the tried and true has been ineffective. Psychotropic meds, individual therapy, family therapy, you name it – the usual isn’t working. That could be because of grief and loss; that’s heavy stuff they don’t want to get into. We see depression, anxiety, substance abuse.

What are the differences from traditional rehab or “talk therapy”?

Talk therapy is probably most successful with those who are motivated to get into stuff; it takes a lot of courage to face fears, anxieties and strong feelings. In the wilderness environment, we tend to see those who are

resistant to that approach, because of fear, guilt, shame, trauma, abandonment, rejection. The wilderness has a way of softening people up. You’re with a group of people who are going to endure the same challenges as you. There’s this cohesion and bond that happens. We’re able to create an atmosphere that generates positive affection for others, reliance on each other, more trust. Then that trust extends to being more willing to be open and vulnerable in therapy. Kids that are resistant can hold it together for an hour in talk therapy, they can dodge things. [Traditional] therapy is also very one-sided; the professional sits on their chair. In this case, we’re all living together, so there’s an equalizing effect. It’s snowing on her and on me, our hands are cold and we’re frustrated trying to tie her tarp down, so there’s more of a chance for that human connection.

What kind of jobs can Ad Ed graduates get with Open Sky? We’ve employed several Ad Ed graduates. Most of them come to work for us as field guides, an entry-level position that’s the heart and soul of what we do. Those are the staff who work a week at a time, living out on the field with these young people. They’re delivering the core therapeutic elements, guided by the licensed therapists, and also wilderness skills. They’re the ones teaching them map reading, camp craft, risk management, all while contending with behavioral issues and emotional outbursts.

pirical literature about what time in nature does for us psychologically,” said Frazer. “Nature provides focus, not unlike coffee as a stimulant.

Stress reduction is another big theme; one study compared people driving down a tree-lined boulevard versus a sprawling, sign-filled, no-greenspace street. They looked at cortisol (the stress hormone) output, and it showed there’s much less cortisol produced driving down the green boulevard. It’s a calming effect.” And while walks in nature have been proved to fight depression, you don’t necessarily need to be in the woods to reap the rewards. “Researchers have taken two groups in a hospital setting and given one group access to a view of nature,” said Frazer. “They’ve shown repeatedly that people who have a view onto nature recover more quickly and require fewer drugs.”

Career tracks You might be thinking, “OK, but what do these kids actually do for work?” There are a surprising number of career tracks for Adventure Education grads. “We have a graduate student at Open Sky Wilderness who proposed a therapeutic farm,” said Frazer. “It’s in Mancos, owned and operated by Open Sky. We have several students working with the Colorado Outward Bound program full-time.

The big focus there is on “transference”: How does getting up this peak today relate to your resistance around some school project you’re dealing with? They’re trying to expand selfawareness.” The job posting board in the Ad Ed building includes listings like L.L. Bean kayak instructor, Outdoor Adventure Specialist, Field Education with AmeriCorps and wilderness therapy at Fire Mountain Residential Treatment Center.

Seasonal jobs in this field are admittedly easier to come by than fulltime positions. Even Neal, who has a full-time job with Indian Head in Pennsylvania, only works there in the summers when camp is in session. He spends half the year back in Colorado.

At Indian Head, Neal hires and trains staff and organizes the outdoor program, which includes taking kids on outdoor explorations.

“That’s one of the drawbacks to our field – there are positions that take you out into the woods or desert for a long time, but that’s not neces-

sarily sustainable,” said Frazer. “I tell my students to be more broadly marketable, to do a minor in psychology or business administration.” Ad Ed majors tend to be adventurous types, so they won’t necessarily fit into the 9-to-5, desk-job mold. “A lot of graduating students choose to do a gap year, traveling while putting together a couple seasonal jobs,” said Stremba.

Horton is interning at Durango Nature Studies now, teaching students about the environment; but next fall she plans to begin work with the ministry Christian Challenge on the FLC campus. “Even though working with them won’t have as much of an outdoor focus, a lot of what I learned through the AE program will still be applicable, because it is such a peoplefocused major,” she said.

Swingle, working in a Wyoming environmental education center, teaches students from around the country in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (one of the last remaining large, nearly-intact ecosystems in the northern temperate zone of the Earth). They focus on increasing scientific literacy in kids, taking them hiking, backpacking and canoeing to encourage appreciation for the natural sciences.

“Spending extended amounts of time in wild places improved the quality of my life growing up,” said Swingle.

“I thought if I could spend my career leading people outside, I would live a fulfilling life. What kept me in this major was the realization that I can provide others with opportunities to have similar experiences.”

Iron Horse highlights With this year’s Iron Horse Bicycle Classic kicking off Friday, May 27, in Buckley Park, here are the events you don’t want to miss this Memorial Day Weekend.

Friday Face Plant Ale, which is a collaboration brew from Ska Brewing Co. and Steamworks Brewing Co. in recognition of the Iron Horse, will be tapped for the kick-off party from 3 to 7 p.m. in Buckley Park. This is also the location for riders to pick up packets. There will be bands and vendors.

Saturday The 50-mile ride from Durango to Silverton. Thousands of riders will gather for the Citizen’s Tour at College Drive and Camino del Rio and at the finish line in Silverton. Good spots to view the race include Shalona Hill and South of Needles Store (the last hill before Needles Country Store).

Sunday Starting about 2 p.m., mountain bikers will navigate single-track trails, downtown roads and ride through Steamworks Brewery. And don’t forget about the cruiser crit at 4 p.m., where riders dress up in costume and pedal goofy bikes in a parade-style event near Ninth Street and Main Avenue.

Monday See racers compete individually in a 13.7-mile time trial on East Animas Road (County Road 250), starting just north of Durango city limits and near the top of Shalona Hill.

What not to miss What could be better than watching movies in the mountains? Telluride Mountainfilm is a weekend-long annual festival featuring 100 films from around the world, curated alongside guest presentations, a symposium, parties, scheduled conversations, book signings and musical events. The festival begins Friday, May 27, with a symposium, followed by the Gallery Walk on Friday afternoon. Films and presentations start Friday night and run through the afternoon of Monday, May 30.

This festival weekend will also feature Town Talks, an Ice Cream Social and free movies under the stars at the outdoors Base Camp Theatre in Telluride Town Park. We chatted with Katie Klingsporn, program director of MountainFilm, about why you should go and what you shouldn’t miss.

What kind of films are shown at the fest?

Documentaries. Adventure, environmental, political, cultural, social films.

How many venues are there?

Six. Any tips or tricks for navigating the festival?

If you can’t get into a film, there are other things to do. There’s so much going on; Gallery Walk, morning talks that are free, an Ice Cream Social.

Pick a few films and focus on those.

Show up early – that’s a really big thing. It’s fun to stand in line! You get to know people and talk about things you saw, and you’re more likely to get a seat. If you really want to see something, try the bigger theaters; the Palm and High Camp have 500 or 600 seats. You’ll be able to get into those. We play our films at least twice each, too. There’s no bad choice, so don’t stress out if you don’t make it into one thing.

What are some films we shouldn’t miss this year?

They’re all so good. “Almost Sunrise,” which is world premiering, is a really important and beautiful film [the story of two Iraq war veterans who find peace by walking across America after harrowing experiences in the service]. The whole crew will be here. “Life, Animated” is a beautiful story [follows a family that used Disney films as the medium to communicate with their autistic son]. I loved “The Million Dollar Duck.” And “The Happy Film” is so visibly rich on the eyes, along with being a great story. We also have tons of short films.

Any special guest speakers or panelists?

Yes, more than 40. Travis Rice is coming, I think he’s the best snowboarder in the history of the sport.

Sarah Marquis, who circumnavigated the globe on foot alone – she’s a National Geographic Explorer, and she’s fascinating. Terry Tempest Williams [American West author and activist] is speaking. And then there’s the 2016 Moving Mountains Symposium, which is about National Parks and goes all day long.

What’s great about watching movies in the festival setting versus sitting at home on the couch?

It’s always special to share the experience with other people. At a festival, you share it with the audience and also all the guests, people who actually made the films or who are in the films themselves. The festival atmosphere buzzes with conversation, dialogue, inspiration.

It’s infectious.

Worst-reviewed film in X-Men franchise?

There is a moment in the ’80sset film “X-Men: Apocalypse” when teenage mutants are exiting a screening of the then-new Star Wars release “Return of the Jedi.”

One of them notes that the third film in any trilogy is “always the worst.” The line registers like a direct dig at the widely derided “X-Men: The Last Stand,” the third film in the earlier iteration of the X-Men franchise.

Yet while “Apocalypse” director Bryan Singer might be meta-heckling Brett Ratner’s 2006 movie, let’s hope he’s also aware enough to be self-deprecating there: According to critics, his own “Apocalypse” – yes, the third film in this X-Men prequel trilogy – is even worse.

The latest X-film, which arrives late Thursday, is being deemed so mediocre by critics, it currently ranks below even Ratner’s “The Last Stand,” which has a score of 58 on Metacritic; Singer’s “Apocalypse” now sits at a Metascore of 51.

So where does “X-Men: Apocalypse” fit in among similar flicks this year? If early reviews are to be believed, it’s not as controversial as “Batman v Superman,” but it doesn’t measure up to “Captain America: Civil War,” either.

The reviews may be decidedly mixed, but the critical reception registers as more disappointing because it suffers by comparison, landing right on the heels of the mostly lauded “Civil War.” The reviews also bear particularly disheartening news when you consider that every previous superhero film directed and/or written by Singer

Barring an 11th-hour surge in positive reviews, “Apocalypse” will be the worst-reviewed X-team film ever – ahead of only the solo installment “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (Metascore: 40), the 2009 movie that was so misguided, it stitched Deadpool’s merc-quick lips together (thus silencing the very snark that

helped make this year’s “Deadpool” such a huge hit).

So just where does this film – and Singer’s former sure-handed conducting – go off the rails?

A phalanx of critics say that the world-domination plot seems awfully tired in 2016, particularly because for the third time this year in a major superhero film, the crimefighters are pressed into battle against each other on a massive scale.

“Both ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ are superhero extravaganzas with severe traffic-control problems, but while the former keeps things flowing reasonably smoothly, the latter film ... resembles a bumper-car nightmare,” writes the Hollywood Reporter, which adds: “Mostly it just feels like a bloated if ambitious attempt to shuffle as many mutants and specially gifted characters as possible into a story of a resurrected god ready to take over the world.”

‘Cloverfield’

Golden Goat What is it?

Golden goat is another one of those strains whose origins are steeped in tradition and rumor. It was supposedly bred by accident in Topeka, Kansas, when a male Hawaiian-Romulan pollinated an Island Sweet Skunk. As a grower, it’s excruciatingly painful to hear about such an amateur mistake, but in this case, we should all be grateful because this knucklehead created a beautiful strain.

At 24.1 percent THC, this hybrid strain smokes all sativa, and has enough other cannabinoids to balance it nicely.

The effects This strain is not for beginners. It hits very hard on the first inhale, and leaves you with an intense psychoactive head rush that lasts for almost two hours.

For a supposed hybrid, there is no indica sensations anywhere in the cycle.

It wears off easily, and the comedown is almost unnoticeable. For a sativa of this strength, the uplifting effect still allows for relatively clear thinking.

“Cloverfield” is a short, sweet horror flick that’ll scare you shitless. Before the film’s 2008 release, the project was shrouded in mystery, the premise kept almost entirely under wraps (effectively heightening the hype). Directed by Matt Reeves, “Cloverfield” is technically the baby of producer J.J. Abrams, the creator of “Lost” and most recently the director of “Star Trek” and the new “Star Wars.”

It’s basically Godzilla-meets-Blair Witch, a monster movie compounded by shaky handheld camerawork that’ll feel disturbingly real if you’re sober and verging on all-too-plausible if you’re stoned. The story tails a group of well-intentioned 20-something yuppies in New York. Rob, the cutest of the crew, is moving to Japan, so they’re throwing him a party.

In attendance at the shindig is Beth – she and Rob are secretly in love, but neither has the courage to admit it – and Rob’s best friend Hud, who is tasked with capturing everyone’s farewell bids on camera.

Then the attack begins: Something starts wreaking havoc on Manhattan. There are explosions, torrents of fire, buildings crumbling into dust, and cacophonous screams of sirens and people. The Statue of Liberty’s head hurtles down the street, torn clean off. It’s clearly a monster of some kind, though the Sept. 11 references are hard to miss (“Is it the terrorists?” one partygoer cries). Hud keeps filming.

The chaos and destruction of “Cloverfield” is chilling because there aren’t explanations. No one knows what the monster is. This is existential horror, the senseless kind you’d feel if a large-scale assault was actually happening. We’re never privy to grander perspectives from outside the friend group. There aren’t cuts to scientists figuring things out or examining data. (But I’m sure your stoned brain can invent some monster-origin stories).

Like most monster movies, “Cloverfield” is scariest before we ever glimpse Godzilla’s possible ancestor, a gigantic reptile that lumbers around taking out skyscrapers. The U.S. military firebombs it to no avail. Fast and deadly spider-crab hybrids drop off the creature and leap atop bystanders.

Some audiences complained the hand-held camera POV (through which we witness the entire story) gave them motion sickness. Hud has a haphazard filming style. But weed is good for nausea. Plus the movie is a clean, perfect 85 minutes. It’ll fly by before any of your buzz wears off.

The smell There is an equal amount of sweetness and citrus, with just a bit of earthy scent.

The look Very pale and light green buds that are large for a sativa.

The taste The smoke is smooth with hints of sweetness on the exhale.

The final verdict This is a very powerful strain. The clear high is great for doing mundane activities, yet leaves you confident enough to be able to handle more complex situations should they arise. This is another strain I enjoyed in light doses. Heavier doses will erase all brain activity, and you might get a little overwhelmed. Most people like it for daytime and afternoon activities, while allowing the gentle comedown to subside before bedtime.

How does a woman navigate a world of mansplaining heteros?

I’m a queer woman. When I entered my 30s, I realized that I was more queer/bi than I had previously allowed myself to be, and I started exploring my attraction to cis heterosexual men.

Five years later, and I’m in an incredible GGG relationship with a cis het male. He’s everything I have ever wanted in a partner: sexy, funny, feminist and smart. We have full disclosure about sexuality and kinks, no complaints there. What I do have trouble with is navigating his family and friends, twin social circles composed of heterosexuals who fall into stereotypical gender roles. I spent my teens and 20s fully submersed in queer/trans circles with like-minded feminist hippies who are not hung up on the gender binary. My partner’s friends are fundamentally good people, but they see nothing wrong with “old fashioned” misogyny. I am often interrupted, talked over and “mansplained” by my partner’s male friends. And while I am a pretty friendly person, I can’t get a foot in the door with the women in his friend circle. My notions on feminism and equality are way too out there, so I tend to keep to myself in a corner during parties in order to avoid starting an argument. How do I navigate this weird heterosexual world that I don’t understand? I’ve tried to explain my feelings to my partner, but I think he has a hard time relating, as he is a heterosexual cis male and was raised as one. How do I keep from losing my cool when someone starts to mansplain to me? I may be in a heterosexual romantic partnership, but I am still a queer lady at heart.

Bi Lefty Encounters Cis Hets Some people “fall into stereotypical gender roles” because that’s who they are, BLECH, and what you perceive as the thoughtless embrace of the gender binary can in some cases be an authentic expression of gender identity. That doesn’t excuse misogyny and mansplaining, of course, but not everyone who embraces seemingly stereotypical gender roles is a dupe who needs a good talking to from the new queer girlfriend of an old straight friend.

That said, if going to parties with your cis het boyfriend’s gender-normative friends makes you miserable ... don’t go to those parties. Or if you must go, drag along a leftist-hippie-queer friend who can sit in the corner with you and marvel at the mansplaining manmuggles and their clueless lady friends who aren’t interested in your thoughts on feminism and equality.

I am a 40-year-old woman; I came out when I

was 16. When I was 17, I met M and we dated for eight years. M was a horrible human being – emotionally and occasionally physically abusive. M still sends me the occasional (creepy) email, wishing me a happy birthday or giving me updates on people I don’t really recall. I don’t respond. A few years back, I got an email saying that M was now “Mike.” I think it’s important to use the pronouns people want you to use for them. But Mike wasn’t Mike when he was in my life. Changing his pronoun when describing him feels like I’m changing my identity – my first real long-term relationship was with someone I thought was a woman. Mike caused a lot of damage in my life – does he get to [bleep] up (or complicate) my identity, too? It’s not like the subject of Mike comes up daily. When it does, I feel like a liar if I use “she,” using “he” makes me feel like I’m lying about myself, and stopping to explain everything derails the conversation. And it’s not like I’m being a great trans ally when a conversation gets sidelined by something like: “Well, random coworker whose only trans reference is Caitlyn Jenner, my ex is trans and he’s a psychopath.”

Mike’s Hard Lemonade Block Mike’s number, block his email address, block him on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Periscope, Kik, FuckStick, WhatsApp, CumDump, etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum.

And stop talking about Mike – don’t discuss him with random coworkers, casual acquaintances, or friends. If you absolutely, positively must discuss him with someone – a true intimate with a right to your relationship history, who needs to be sensitive to the abuse you suffered – you can be a good ally to other trans people (not your abusive trans ex) by carefully using nouns and descriptors in place of your asshole ex’s preferred pronouns. So instead of “I met him when I was still a teenager,” you say, “I met the abusive piece of shit when I was still a teenager.” Instead of “It took me eight long years to get away from him,” you say, “It took me eight long years to get away from that asshole psychopath.”

What I’m gonna say next will get me slammed on Twitter (heavens), MHL, but I’ve learned not to read my @s, so here we go ...

If using male pronouns when referring to your ex is gonna complicate your life – really complicate it – if the “transitioned later” part is likely to get dropped during a game of interoffice telephone, if the qualifier about your ex having identified as a woman while you were together is likely to get dropped too, and if

either of those drops could lead coworkers or casual acquaintances to assume something about you that isn’t true, i.e., that you’re into dudes and therefore gettable by dudes, and if that erroneous assumption could result in your having to deflect awkward and/ or unpleasant advances from confused males, or if having your status as a Gold Star Lesbian questioned could induce orientational dysphoria ... I don’t see the nontheoretical harm in you – and only you – misgendering Mike on the rare occasion when a convo about him can’t be avoided. You don’t live near him, no one you know knows him and the misgendering is unlikely to get back to him. The adage “no harm, no foul” applies here.

But it would be simpler, easier, and ally-ier if you sidestepped the issue by not speaking to anyone about your asshole ex ever again.

I am a 40something bi woman happily married to a newly transitioned 50ish trans woman. I have a history of putting myself about a bit (safely) before our relationship, but we have been monogamous since we met (except for a disastrous threesome). My wife hasn’t put herself about and has slept with only myself and one other to whom she was also married – and that threesome. She understands that I have a high libido and mostly she doesn’t. Our sex life is loving and good mostly, but I do want more. There have been discussions on opening up our relationship – but essentially, I want to and she is resistant. I want to do this with transparency and with men (mostly), but I don’t feel this is realistic emotionally for her given some conflict we’ve had over this issue. Is cheating the only answer here?

Never Overly Terrified I can see how it might be emotionally tricky for a recently transitioned trans woman – that would be your wife – to cheerfully sign off on her second wife sleeping with men (mostly) and with transparency (ethically). But if you absolutely, positively can’t commit to sleeping with only her for the rest of your life, NOT, and you can’t get her permission to sleep with others ... then, yes, there’s cheating. There’s also fantasy, masturbation, repression, sublimation, self-sacrifice – and divorce.

Mike Rust film to screen at Animas City Theatre This weekend, head down to Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Dr., and check out the film “The Rider & The Wolf,” a cool film that is also a benefit for the Trees are the Answer program at Needham Elementary School.

“The Rider and the Wolf” is a documentary about the life and mysterious disappearance of Mountain Bike Hall of Fame cyclist Mike Rust. He helped form the sport of mountain biking in the U.S. before going missing without a trace in 2009 in a remote part of Colorado. The mystery remains.

The ACT will be showing the film four times – 6 and 8 p.m. – Saturday and Sunday. This is a 16 years and older event.

Tickets are $10 and are available at Maria’s Bookshop, Durango Cyclery, Mountain Bike Specialists, San Juan Cycles and at the ACT box office (night of show only).

Bluegrass taking over the Balcony Summer’s pretty much here, and there’s no better way to ring in the weekend than by listening to live music downtown, preferably with drink in hand.

Durango band Running Out of Road will be playing contemporary bluegrass Friday night at the Balcony Bar & Grill, 600 Main Ave. The band started in 2012 as an early morning jam before work. It includes members Duane Tucker, Michelle Fletcher, Jeff Moorehead, Rusty Carpentier and Ian Lennox.
