Costumes Love it

With someone to cook for, culinary invention boils over

L

ast week in this space I admitted to lately feeling a bit under the weather when it comes to my creativity.

I was referring mainly to the realms of creativity I encounter in my job – writing, design and illustration.

But there has been one area of my life where the creativity hasn’t slowed, but increased, received new life, an area given a dose of vitality. And it’s in an area that I never quite thought of as being creative: Cooking.

While my creative cauldron has been left on the stove overnight with the stew beginning to stick to the bottom, my real-life cauldron is overflowing with culinary inventiveness. There were the grilled meatloaf meatballs: spiced-up ground beef and onion, rolled into 1-inch diameter balls, grilled, then tossed in barbecue sauce. There was the pulled-pork pizza: homemade dough, coated with olive oil and spices, two parts barbecue sauce and one part tomato sauce, smoked fresh mozzarella, caramelized mushrooms and red onions and topped with spicy homemade pulled pork and cilantro. Or, my triumph, the Southwestern chicken shepherd’s pie: a base of cubed marinated grilled chicken, grilled fresh corn and roasted green chiles, blanketed by buttermilk green chile mashed potatoes topped with pepperjack cheese.

I have progressively enjoyed cooking my entire adult life but have witnessed a revival the last few months. Just as it is the one area I am willing to blame for my writing/ designing creativity lull, my dreamy, fairy-tale romance over the last four months may be to blame for my wave of creative cooking. I have traded my keyboard for a cutting board, swapped synonyms for spices, less dishing and more dishes.

It’s not so much that I want to impress this wonder woman of mine (though of course I do, c’mon), it’s that I again have someone to cook with and for, someone to share in the spoils. It’s

a reminder of the intended and unintended externalities of cooking: The chopping and slicing can be meditative; the wafting, simmering smells can jog memories; and a homemade meal that brings two or more together can be cause for an unspoken union, a bonding grace, a soulful experience where the love and care infused in the food manifests in the table’s conversation and spirit. No wonder it’s inspiring.

My approach to cooking for some time now has been to start with an established recipe to get a sense of ingredients, spice ratios and cooking times and temperatures. Once those are ingrained, it’s time to freestyle.

Like in the case of the shepherd’s pie, the creative combinations and alterations take over: meat, vegetables and spices on the bottom, mashed potatoes on top. Let the iterations begin (before the Southwestern shepherd’s pie was Italian shepherd’s pie: tomatoes, onions and green peppers with ground beef mixed with Italian sausage on the bottom). Or sometimes a restaurant’s menu item will challenge me to do better. The pulled-pork pizza was an almost 100 percent ripoff of Steamworks (or is it an homage?). Sorry Steamworks, but I think I have you beat this time.

As I said last week, creativity comes from the union of disparate ideas, concepts, emotions and images, combining them in a way where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts to create a bigger idea and better understanding of the subject matter. This undoubtedly applies to cooking, where disparate ideas and ingredients collide, where you imagine flavors intertwining in ways they never have before.

I will continue to embrace this shot of creativity. As the temperatures and leaves fall and as we slowly migrate indoors for the coming months, I say we let the smells of soups and stews and roasts and breads and the craziest creative casserole your mind can imagine fill our homes. Grab someone you love, clear the table and share.

I didn’t discover my love of costumes until I’d been in Durango for a while.

There’s something about this place that makes people look for any possible reason to throw on a costume. Before I moved here, I didn’t know anyone with a costume trunk. Now, I know multiple people with entire closets devoted to costumes.

Unlike elsewhere, costumes aren’t just for Halloween in Durango. I’ve seen people in rabbit costumes at art openings, in muscle-man suits on 10-speeds, zombies at concerts. And of course, the weeklong costume parade that is Snowdown.

So it goes, I’ve caught the costume bug living here. There was the early ’80s Little League third-base coach costume for Snowdown. For the Imaginario Circus, I wore a striped, multicolored, jester-like vintage ’70s women’s top, sparkly black tights, a Zorro mask and some tighty undies I covered with duct tape to create what can only be called an amazing nonfunctional adult diaper worn on the outside. I also created an alarming codpiece but chickened out from wearing it. I’m still new to this costume scene after all.

I love costumes for the opportunity to combine different sartorial elements to make a scene or to make someone laugh. I love how costumes let us play as adults, to hide behind fabric and masks and become someone or something else for a night. Costumes allow us the freedom to be unscripted, free and wild, drawing out sides of ourselves too often stymied by slacks and buttondowns.

For a short time, we are actors and inhabitants of another skin.

Hate it I know Durangoans love dressing up more than they love almost anything. (I haven’t entirely figured out why. Is it something in the water?)

But I do not like to dress up or put on costumes. I did as a kid, I think. I went as a pink-and-purple unicorn with homemade glitter swirls on my body for about three years; the two years before that, I was a tiny dragon with baby teeth in place of fangs; and in the years post-unicorn, I began to get a little bolder, more creative. My best friend and I went trick-or-treating as two halves of the word “rainbow” one year, a peculiar notion we considered terribly clever.

I was “rain,” with a blue tulle skirt and clouds and raindrops painted on my face; my friend was “bow,” with garish ribbons in her hair, a pink bow painted on her cheek and a yellow poodle skirt. (Her costume probably made less sense than mine.) But our pairing was a big hit with the bored suburban parents in the neighborhood.

You can disappear inside a costume and become someone else. But I guess as I get older, I just want to be me. There are so many inconveniences with costumes, like if you’re dressed as anything fuzzy, you’ll probably be too hot. Or if you wear a sexy Halloween outfit on an evening out, there’s a good chance you’ll be freezing all night. You can’t put on a coat or hat, because that ruins the veracity of the thing. I’d rather just wear my own garb and be comfortable.

On the Republican Party In our continuing series on the political parties (Could we say that we’re “fair and balanced™”?), we speak with Ginny Chambers, the La Plata County Republican vice chairwoman, who wants to tell you a thing or two about conservatism. [Editor’s note: To read last week’s Get Smart on the Democratic Party with Jean Walter, chairwoman of the La Plata Democratic Central and Executive Committees got to dgomag.com] How long have you worked for the Republican Party?

in the Democratic Party. The Republicans – not every Republican, please don’t misconstrue what I’m about to say – but a lot of the party has really swayed so that they’re only concerned with re-election. That’s one reason that I like Trump. He’s not part of that old school gang. I worked in D.C. I saw them together. I know the back-door politics. I know how that stuff works, and I think a lot of politicians don’t really care about anything beside getting re-elected. Sorry, I digressed.

I think yes, there has to be a balance. We can’t all be the same. We need free thinkers. But both parties have swayed from what their core values are – on both sides.

For La Plata County, I’ve been the vice chair for almost two years. I was the president of Southwest Republican Women the two years before that, and then I worked in D.C. for Congress when I was in college. So ... junior high or high school?

What appeals to you about the Republican Party?

Individual freedom, less government. Protecting our military, protecting our small businesses and small-business owners, lower taxes. The will of the people. I don’t think the government should have so much control, and to me, that’s what conservatism means.

What do you find compelling about politics?

Is it hard to be young and conservative?

When I first got involved here in Durango, I was shocked at how many people were like, “Oh, my god, aren’t you scared? Aren’t you worried you won’t get a job, or you’ll be discriminated against?” I’ve received many threats, and a lot of people have tried to hurt me for being a Republican leader, but I’m not scared of them. I’ve been made fun of, but you have to be tough and you can’t let it get to you. I really feel that people treat me that way because they see me making a difference and they’re scared of it.

stand what you’re voting for, then refrain from voting. You can vote on one thing and abstain from another. If you aren’t sure, don’t just pick a side because somebody told you to do that.

Educate yourself, make up your own mind.

What would you say to the first-time voter about the Republican Party?

I’m big on the term “conservatism.” I think that the parties have become a little – ridiculous. Both of them, to be honest. What I would tell people is to educate themselves. Watch and read the news – all of the news. People think that as a Republican, I only watch Fox News. I actually watch them all. My minor was history, so I pride myself on studying. There’s so much more than the presidential election – we have county commissioner races, the state Legislature, a tax raise, an amendment to the state constitution. You need to read everything. When Nancy Pelosi was talking about Obamacare and said, “We have to pass it before we can know what’s in it,” – that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I don’t care if you’re Democrat, Republican, Libertarian. If you don’t under-

Do the parties need each other?

Democrats have taken a very progressive approach, and some Republicans have gotten away from the conservatism that I believe in. I think both parties have changed tremendously.

John F. Kennedy would be considered a Republican today. I was watching some of his speeches on the History Channel the other day, and he doesn’t speak like Hillary and other Democrats. His views are not progressive. I have a lot of Democratic friends who are not progressive, so I don’t think that has always existed

I am fascinated by the fact that we are one of the only countries on Earth in which we can actually have a voice. We, the citizens, are the government. Unfortunately, the government we have today makes us feel like we have to rely upon them. We shouldn’t have to rely on the government. They are there to protect our country, take care of our military – those kinds of things. We don’t need the federal government making state regulations.

We’re one of the most diverse countries on the planet!

You go from California to New York, the Midwest, Colorado! Why does the federal government think they need to have their hand in everybody’s business?

That’s not what the federal government was set up to do. The federal government forgets that it’s our taxes that pay for each and every one of their salaries.

They’re not God. They’ve overreached and overstepped their bounds. We, the people, American citizens – we’re smart individuals who can make our own decisions and form our own opinions. We don’t need the federal government to regulate everything. Here’s the thing, after November 8th, we’re all still Americans.

We’re one of the greatest countries on Earth! I think that people forget that at the end of the day, after everything is said and done, we still live on American soil and we need to be proud to be American.

A Tribe Called Red here for FLC’s Real History of the Americas

oodbye, Columbus Day. With more communities, college campuses and major cities doing away with the name, it’s got less value than an 8-track, and even less street cred. Instead, the celebration now turns to acknowledging the true Americans, and then some. Let’s dig into the history that’s been glossed over in an honorable quest for truth as we celebrate the cultures that make up a good back-story.

It’s that quest for truth that has certainly fueled Fort Lewis College’s Real History of the Americas movement, a growing motion that is changing the holiday known as “Columbus Day” into Indigenous Peoples Day, and a look at North and South America before it was “discovered” by an inept explorer, claiming he found a land that had been occupied by other people for centuries. One of these days, I’m going to travel to Budapest and I’m sure as shit not going to come back to Durango and claim it as something I found.

“The Real History of the Americas” is a daylong celebration, happening this Monday (Oct. 10) at FLC that will feature various guest lecturers and workshops, examining the history of our nation from the perspectives of Hispanic, African-Americans, Native, Asian and LGBT peoples. The event also recognizes the city of Durango’s resolution to call the day Indigenous Peoples Day, and no longer acknowledge it as a day celebrating Christopher Columbus.

The day will cap off with a concert by A Tribe Called Red, performing at the Community Concert Hall.

This band, whose latest album, “We Are The Halluci Nation” was released in mid-September, is a perfect group to perform for a college like FLC, with a Native American population that embraces its history along with popular culture and modern music.

“When the students listed artists they were interested in as serving as the culminating event for the celebration, A Tribe Called Red was at the top of the list,” said Community Concert Hall director Charles

The Canadian band, winners of the 2014 JUNO award for “Breakthrough Group of the Year,” is a mix of traditional Native American music, fused with hip-hop and electronic music. It’s a combination that works; there are thick and bass-heavy beats, the electronic drop found in the electronic

music, and dub-step that the club kids dig, and smart, conscious lyrics rapped and chanted.

This is intelligent music, at times a history lesson of the earliest music of America uniquely matched with music of the 20th century. There are elements of rock, drone-womp, reggae and dub. It’s aggressive, danceable and capable of inciting movement, thought and action.

It’s music that calls for a full listen. Put a quick ear to the music and what you’re hearing is straight-up electronic music. Digging a bit deeper reveals chants and songs heard throughout the history of Native American music. It all comes along with a message relevant to that of Real History of the Americas; lets not celebrate this history we’ve been taught, but let’s honor and acknowledge the unheralded citizens of America that have made important contributions to this country’s growth.

I was pretty put off, obviously. I had been introduced to Smith early thanks to the ridiculously well-versed and knowledgeable DJs at KJHK, my beloved college

radio station. Here, some of his contemporaries and admirers alike take on his songs. I looked forward to hear how Dinosaur Jr’s J. Mascis interpreted “Waltz #2.” I was less taken with Dresden Dolls’ Amanda Palmer’s version of “Pictures of Me,” but, hey, that’s OK. I still have his original compositions to go back to, which is part of the joy of records such as these.

The reluctant Smith may have scoffed at ANY adoration of his recordings, but these takes are homage with reverence.

For fans of cover albums, specifically those covering the songs of Elliott Smith. My favorite cuts include Tomo Nakayama’s take on “Miss Misery,” Waxahatchee slithering through a stellar version of “Angeles” and Sebadoh’s Lou Barlow stripping down “Division Day.” —— Jon E. New at Southwest Sound

Meshuggah has been making mind-bending metal music for as long as I’ve been alive. They are the band that introduced me to the idea of concept albums, that songs can be a half hour and not be boring. They taught me words like “abnegation” and “pravus,” and the concept of ego deconstruction when I was very young. Meshuggah is dear to me. They make an overly-technical type of metal that can be very hard to listen to. You will be able to bob your head to it for maybe 20 seconds before you have to rethink your rhythm. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone willing to try something new.

2. Green Day,“Revolution Radio” Green Day is back, and continuing its relentless trek across a vast ocean of punk rock fans who don’t know Anti-Flag exist. Will the new album win back any of the street cred they lost when they made a Broadway play? I don’t know.

Probably not. “Bang Bang” and the title track both sound like songs that didn’t make the cut on “American Idiot.” But regardless of my feelings about the band, they are important, and still remain culturally relevant in an age when commercial punk rock consists of maybe three bands. For that I give them props.

3. Phish,“Big Boat”

Shovels and Rope,“Little Seeds” Shovels and Rope is a husband and wife roots folk duo out of South Carolina who play a soulful, cynical type of folk that pulls some influence out of punk-rock attitude. Think Townes Van Zandt or Neko Case with a little bit more energy, or Shakey Graves with a bit more of an edge. It’s beer-drinking music. Or, if you have the funds, bourbon-drinking music.

5. Xylouris White,“Black Peak” I saw these guys open for Godspeed You! Black Emperor earlier this year and they blew me away. Consisting of drummer Jim White, whom you may know from the weird Australian rock band Dirty Three, and George Xylouris playing the Cretan (as in the Greek island) lute, these guys make a, frankly, awesome blend of folk music, world music and free-form rock that utterly baffled me when I saw it live. White plays with such ferocity and precision while also maintaining a higher base level of swagger than any rapper could dream of. I saw him throw a stick up in

the air and have it hit the snare on time while the man took a drink from his beer. Xylouris seemed a master of his craft as well, jamming out melodies on an unfamiliar instrument that blur the

eyes and ears. On top of that, he has a wonderful voice, calling to mind folk songs of a bygone age. Highly recommended.

1. Meshuggah,“The Violent Sleep of Reason”

Getting this out of the way early: I am not a Phish fan. The single of this one, “Breath and Burning,” sounded as if Michael Franti or Jack Johnson had access to a brass section. The lyrics are playful metaphors that are relatable until you think about them for too long. If that gets your giblets jumbling then, by all means, jam out and get crazy.

Polyester: Yesterday’s fabric of the future, today!

A few weeks ago, Style Fetish deemed polyester the loser in the duel between synthetics and natural fibers for wet-weather-outdoor wear, but this slick, unnatural wonder-material definitely rules the world of stylish and interesting vintage prints. Garments of polyester made in the late ’60s and ’70s for men and women had trippy, eye-dazzling prints, super-stretchy comfort and literal staying power (the half-life of poly is strong – in a million years, Morlocks will be wearing vintage ’70s shirts).

This material was the perfect blank canvas for brain-melting, psychedelic graphics, photo-prints, geometrics, florals and visually-confusing blends of all of these. From gorgeous to hideous, these shirts are excellent and telling examples of vintage graphic design, visually revealing cultural trends. Futuristic, pre-Tron-looking laser beams, grids, proto-pixels and twisted-perspective geometrics looked from the analog ’70s into the future of computer-generated design and graphics and ’80s science fiction.

Late ’60s and ’70s poly prints also looked to the past, as all fashion eras do – imagery referring to the

’20s and ’30s like cloche-hatwearing lady faces and mixed florals and geometrics appear in prints in women’s top, jacket and skirt or pants sets.

The realistic photo-print shirts, which are getting particularly hard to find, consisted of collaged images of photographs of almost anything: Paintings of Van Gogh’s and others, brutal Civil War scenes, landscapes and nature scenes, Disney characters, sports scenes, antiquities and more.

Being a brewer is a joy and a privilege ... but it sucks

rewing is a strange profession, one that is romanticized, misunderstood, always carries with it a fair bit of social capital, and professional brewers themselves fill in some interesting niches and come from interesting backgrounds. It’s also a subculture, with its own dialect and set of customs and rituals that isn’t for everyone.

It’s also similar to sports or art in that you can be a professional brewer or an amatuer one; it can be a hobby or a way of life or both.

For the first time in my life now, I’m friends with home brewers. True, I’ve had a few home brewer friends here and there, and many of my colleagues past and present are home brewers, but I’m surrounded by a group now that are just home brewers. When I tell them what I do, I see a genuine glint in their eyes, like they are looking past me into their own reflection in some shiny copper brew kettle. I’m sure they’re imagining walking into the office surrounded by the smell of hops and steeping barley. They imagine themselves sitting at the end of the bar at their own taproom, taking in all the compliments.

What they don’t see is, well, my daily life.

Today, I was covered in beer when the bell on our filter started leaking and I had to tighten it mid-filter. Before that, I was staring down a microscope doing a cell count for a beer we were brewing the next day, and, before that, I was dumping bags of grain – around 1,500 pounds worth. After getting sprayed with beer, hucking grain and counting cells, I helped a co-worker adjust the bottom valve on a very poorly-designed fermentor. This task involved me laying on my back in a yeast-and water-soaked floor, tightening tri-clamps while he held the pipe in place. I got to work at 5 a.m. and left around 3 p.m. I’m not saying this for pity or praise, but only to say it took my whole body and whole mind to complete the day, something very few professions require.

There’s a reason why Mikkel Bjergso of Mikkeller and Friends says, “I don’t enjoy making beer; I like making recipes and hanging out,” and that’s because brewing sucks. It’s a joy and privilege, but it sucks. I think this applies to a lot of the professions that have this amateur/professional overlap. You may be a very competent

cook on special occasions, but you couldn’t cut it in a real kitchen. You may be a scratch golfer, but you’re not going to be able hang on the PGA Tour.

But honestly, beer is a little different.

If you wanted to be a brewer, you could quit your job and start working at a brewery. You’d most likely start on the packaging line and have to scrub floors or clean tanks or fill kegs till you get a chance to cross-train on the big boy machine. Then it’s a matter of showing up without effing up, because good production beer is about consistency.

I will say, having a glint in your eye forever is worse than trying and failing. I don’t how many people I’ve seen quit in this industry, but the people who make it, they don’t have a glint. They’ve got a cool gaze that can look at a beer, take a little sip and tell you the story of all the hard work that went into it, whether it was their hard work or someone else’s.

REPRISE! In the one-woman show “The Secret Lives of the Divine,” Sarah Syverson plays 12 characters, six of them main characters who take the audience along in their spiritual journeys. There’s Miranda, the spiritual course junkie; Stella, the New York Jew on her first Zen retreat; Jeremiah, an old Southern bum living down by the river, talking with the Good Lord, both of them drunk on whiskey; Henry, an 8-year-old who confronts the monsters under his bed; Catherine dying of cancer; and Jamal, a guru customer service rep.

Each has their own arc and way of connecting with God, the universe, the cosmos or the divine.

Syverson wrote the play eight years ago and performed it off and on for two years across Colorado, at the Boulder Fringe Festival and in New Mexico.

She has since written and performed another one-woman show, “Growing: Adventures in Food and Farming,” in 2014, presented by the Merely Players. She has also become a mainstay at KSUT radio in Cortez as well as co-founded and produce The Raven Narratives, a storytelling How has the show changed since when you first performed it?

Timing and space. I did more editing out of content and words. More showing and less telling. It’s challenging with a one-woman show because there’s one person on stage so monologues could get really long and dry. You need a diversity in tempo and pace and characterizations. The first time around when I was writing it, looking back I can see that there was a certain sense of feeling terrified of being onstage so wanting to have each character fully explain them-

series ready for its fourth show this year in Cortez and Durango.

Syverson reprised “Secret Lives” to give it another life, wanting to see a full run in Durango – the first time around saw just two one-night-only performances here. It’s also a fundraiser for the Dharma Center, where Syverson is active, a place that is “right in alignment with what the show is.”

The show, which plays October 14 at 7:30 p.m. and October 15, at 3 and 7:30 p.m. at the Durango Arts Center, has also always held a special place for her, said Syverson, who, seemingly unaware, can slip into the persona of one of the show’s characters when discussing them.

“It’s the first show that I wrote and I still love it so much,” she said. “So there’s something about it that I’m still passionate about, the topic and the contents and how it makes me feel when I perform it.”

We spoke with Syverson about how the show is different this time around, how she has grown as a performer and why it’s necessary to have a sense of humor about our spiritual journeys.

How have you developed as a performer since the last time you did this show?

It has to do with that space. I’m in a more relaxed place in my life. I’m more relaxed on stage – not to say at all that I don’t get nervous, because I do. Now that I’ve [performed] with several scripts and in several different formats and I’ve also spent a lot

What is the most challenging part of the show for you?

Part of it is the shifts between characters. There’s some really distinct ones.

For example, Stella. She’s very loud and very brash. She gets calmer over time.

But to go from her to Catherine, who is one of the more serious characters in the show ... she’s dying of ovarian cancer ,and so that’s a big shift. There’s music in between that helps move that, the changing of the costumes, the posture, but those transitions are big. The energy it takes to be on stage that long, it’s like running a half-marathon.

What’s something you hope the audience gets from the show?

That there’s a sense of humor that we have about that journey or that

path to the divine. One of the original reasons I wrote this show was a sense of feeling like we get so serious about our spiritual practice that we can’t laugh at ourselves and loosen up, to have a connection with that divine source and have sense of humor about the journey.

Why do you think we’re serious about those things and why is it important to be able to have a sense of humor about them?

For me I have a sense of earnestness. I want to be a good student. Part of it is cultural. Growing up in a church where on Sunday you dress nicely, you sit nicely in the pew and very respectful and try your hardest. And then you get out of Sunday school and rip off your really uncomfortable polyester clothes and you’re really tight shoes and you go play.

And God isn’t in that realm where you play. You meet God at church and then you get to go play afterwards. And that just feels like the craziest dichotomy that’s not actually true. It feels like God is in the playground more than he is in the church a lot of times.

Durango’s guerilla artist »» We spoke to the locally-famous Lego bomber Sam Bridgham about the social implications of his art

am Bridgham’s work exists at the intersection of art and engineering. His cheery, primary-color Lego sculptures cling onto the sides of bridges and sign posts in Durango, enhancing but not interfering with the standing framework. “It draws your attention to the infrastructure in a way you had not considered before,” said Bridgham, a mischievous fellow who considers himself more a vandal or anarchist than a public artist.

This process has been dubbed “Lego bombing,” a term inspired by a similar fad known as “yarn bombing” (where knitters leave colorful yarn draped artistically around trees, benches or signposts in public spaces). Bridgham’s sculptures are of varying size, usually not much bigger than a basketball. They all consist of vibrant Lego pieces (the cheap kind you played with as a kid), snapped together to form the shapes of giant bugs, simple squares or wraparound adornment for boring poles. The structures aren’t functional, but you can take them apart, put them back together or simply take a picture for Instagram.

No permission has been given to leave Legos around town, but no one ever told Bridgham to stop, either. He builds everything with the anticipation of curious townsfolk modifying it. “Yet you also want to inspire them to NOT wreck it,” he said.

Delight is the objective. And it’s just an act of vandalism, really. I’m an anarchist in my heart, as every good American should be. There’s been so much of our space that’s been appropriated – not for nefarious reasons, you’ve gotta have something to hold the buildings up – but the way we approach those things is generally through engineering, with aesthetics as a side-concern or no concern. You can’t make 5,000 really

wreck it.”

Bridgham has been teaching Lego robotics and engineering classes at places like the Durango Rec Center for six years. He makes no money from the erratic Lego “bombing” (his term), but suspects his fans admire the defiance involved in putting up weird art where it doesn’t belong.

His next proposed community project is one to memorialize Captain Kuss, the Blue Angels pilot from Durango who died in a plane crash this June. “I’d like to go bomb something, encrust it with blue, gold and red Legos in some fashion,” Bridgham said. “Anyone can come and put Legos on, following a pattern. Or they can just come put them in one place, and I’ll work them into a pattern.”

One of Bridgham’s oldest creations sits outside Bread bakery on County Road 250: Wrapped around a wooden pole, the bright sculpture is built with rotating gears, moving smoothly in opposing directions without hitting one another. An older woman paused to spin the wheels one afternoon at Bread, smiling as she played. So it’s not just kids who like this stuff. People might enjoy the arbitrariness of Bridgham’s work, never knowing when they’ll see a childish piece pop out from the woodwork. We spoke with Bridgham about how his Legos force people to see the overlooked, empty visual spaces of our world, and why he’s not mad when people take them down.

beautiful stop sign posts. We’ve grown habituated to that stuff around us, like those gray power boxes on the intersections, they’re everywhere. There’s a term I love to use for a lot of reasons: “Lacuna.” It refers to an empty space, the thing we all agree to not think about so we can get along. Say you’re a guy walking down the street and there’s a beautiful girl dressed in a way that will elicit a response. What do you do? Eyes forward. Or if a kid farts in my class, I don’t go, ‘Hey!’ Socially, certain

things don’t exist.

So you consider what you do vandalism, not public art?

The difference is, I’m appropriating space without permission. They do get taken down, like the ones I’ve put on bridges or lamp posts along the river trail don’t survive very long. I think there’s some dude in the cleanup crew who’s offended by it, and wants them down. I have no idea what happens to these things after I leave. That’s part of the art; I’ve abandoned them.

That’s what allows me to leave such things of intricate beauty that I put so much time in behind me and not fret.

It’s rough justice, because I didn’t ask permission to put my stuff there. So, does anyone need permission to take it down?

Do you get attached to the sculptures?

attention can I put into something and then just walk away? The lifespans of the things I leave behind are a function of how well I can do that. I notice the things I care about the most have the shortest lifespans, for some reason.

“Guerilla art” entails leaving art pieces (often anonymously) in public places without permission.

Durango’s Sam Bridgham isn’t technically anonymous, probably due to our town’s small size. He doesn’t sign his Lego sculptures or leave a business card tucked inside them. But despite many knowing who is detonating the Lego bombs, Bridgham definitely qualifies as a guerilla artist. Here are five international artists who have found acclaim with similar methods.

What’s the oldest piece still standing?

Perhaps the most famous graffiti artist of all time, and the most mysterious.

Anonymous British artist Banksy often decorates public buildings using distinctive stencils in mostly black, gray or white color schemes. His true identity remains a secret, only adding to his cult appeal. Found on streets, walls and bridges the world over, Banksy’s work is satirical, darkly humorous and often offers political and social commentary. All the other artists on our guerilla list have come forward with their names to accept fame and glory; Banksy alone is elusive.

I move them around sometimes and redo them, so it’s hard to say.

But this one’s been here since May [at Bread].

You also teach kids Lego robotics.

I’m a huge fan of Buzz Aldrin and the whole space program. I was thinking about the moon launches, Apollo 11. I was 3½ years old when they landed on the moon, and I remember that very distinctly, not because of the wonder of it, but because my response was like, ‘Yeah, so?’ It seemed utterly probable and likely. Why shouldn’t a man walk on the moon? I’ve been doing that in my head for years. That’s a sort of uneducated, a priori sensibility, an unschooled aesthetic. There’s something pure and pristine about that experience, and it all has to do with delight. When you go into that state of what I call “deep play ...” It’s like going to a movie and forgetting that you’re in the movies. Or being so completely in the zone, you don’t know who’s around you. It’s extremely challenging for an adult to get back there.

Is that why you use Legos, a child-like material?

I use Lego because it’s a universal medium. Every engineer my age and younger all over the planet has a stash of Legos. Lego has penetrated every market, and they’re so durable, attractive and transferable.

Did you have any artistic background?

I’m sort of the black sheep of an artist and engineering family. I could never really get my act together to do either. On my father’s side, they’re all engineers: chemical, electrical, civil. On my mother’s side, they tend to be teachers. And Continued on Page 15

Banksy

Jean-Michel Basquiat Basquiat eventually became a famous artist (his painting career took off and he collaborated with Andy Warhol), but he started off a high-school dropout with no formal training, who took to spray-painting New York City’s subway cars. He combined African-American historical figures with Caribbean motifs, cartoons and poetry. Basquiat’s graffiti designs are both childish and complex, with loud colors and haphazard squiggles and lines. He died of a heroin overdose at age 27.

IZ the Wiz In the considerably-less-safe New York City of the ’70s and ’80s, Manhattan native Michael Martin went by pseudonym IZ the Wiz and ran rampant with urban graffiti. He “tagged” more subway cars than anyone, sometimes with his signature, sometimes with elaborate murals spanning the length of entire cars (like the John Lennon homage he did after the singer’s death).

After years of using toxic aerosol products without any protective mask, IZ was diagnosed with kidney failure and stopped working for his health.

Magda Sayeg Sayeg has been called the “mother” of the contemporary yarn bombing movement. This art form entails using knitted or crocheted material to “graffiti” urban environments. Sayeg has wrapped stripes and patterns of alternating yarn colors around cars, pipes, trees and double-decker buses.

As her popularity grows, her art has evolved, moving into large scale installations and collaborations with companies like Absolut Vodka and Gap.

Jan Vormann A sculptor from Berlin, Vormann has spent years traveling the globe to fix crumbling walls and buildings with multicolored plastic toy blocks.

That’s right – he’s a Lego bomber. His project is called Dispatchwork, under which foundations, organizations and strangers send Vormann photos of places that need repairs, and he plasters the holes in walls or streets with innocuous Legos. They might not make anything structurally sounder, but they sure look cute.

my mother and sister are artists. My professional background is teaching. I graduated, had no idea what to do with myself, and you could get $45 a day being a sub if you didn’t have a criminal record. This was in ’92; $45 a day got you a shit ton of ramen.

What other professions allow people to be in “deep play”? If any?

If you have a really good programmer, you get the best out of him when you just let him do what he does. If it’s a smart boss, they’ll find those people and treasure and pamper them, to get that out of them. If you want really good eggs, you gotta let the chickens be chickens and not put them in little boxes with a timer and an artificial light. Maybe you don’t always get the same size eggs or they don’t lay an egg that day. But when they do, you get the good ones.

What can adults do to get into deep play?

In order for you to write well, you

have to discard the outside editor. And tell your internal editor to pipe down long enough for you to just get it out there. Right? The best way to handle an assignment is to forget about it.

A lot of adults have no creative outlet in their personal lives.

I actually don’t enjoy doing this as much as you’d think. A lot of it is pure frustration, and wondering if I’m going nowhere with this stupid idea. And being concerned about money.

Are the Legos expensive?

I get them for free. People give them to me. I have over 300 pounds of them.

If you bought these pieces individually, that’s like $70 worth of Lego [the Bread sculpture]. I’m recycling not just the pieces, but the good intent. It’s a

good thing to do, to donate Legos so that other children can use them.

What kind of feedback do you get for doing this?

Universally positive. I have people calling and telling me I’m their hero, ‘We’re so grateful you’re doing it.’

There’s gratitude and relief. People come to me like, ‘I love seeing your things, it’s a total lift to my day.’ And that has everything to do with the fact that I just throw them up without asking, seemingly at random. People love the fact that I’m not asking. The old codgers really love that. It’s like the comedian saying the thing no one can say. And that’s what an artist or writer does; you say what other people are thinking, and throw in your two cents, too. When you drive around these sort of lacunae, these spaces that are purposefully nothing because all they are is engineering, and you’re not supposed to notice the infrastructure ...

Who cares about those configurations of power lines? All you care about is that the lights go on. You stop noticing.

But this huge amount of space and resource is taken up by pure engineering,

with no aesthetic concern at all.

You build on top of what’s already there. You’re not changing the structure.

I use infrastructure as my canvas.

But it’s not meant to just hang there in space and you not see the thing.

It draws your attention to the infrastructure in a way that you had not considered before. I think the two places in your brain, the creative and the structural, if there ARE two places ... I think it’s one. Because we’re human beings, we like to dichotomize. We’re a binary species. The transgender people are challenging that, which I think is great. Left brain, right brain, it’s a bullshit dichotomy. We had a knob-turner black and white TV, where I watched the moon landings, and if you turned the knob just so carefully, you’d get stuck between stations. And the screen would just go gray and black. I loved that idea. That is a hidden door. There’s something in there, it’s just that no one can define it.

TORONTO – For the first half of 2016, a powerful narrative was taking shape around the forthcoming release of “The Birth of a Nation,” which is slated for highly anticipated openings this week.

It was not just the narrative told by the period drama, based on the true story of Nat Turner’s 1831 slave uprising. It was the narrative about the film itself: A well-liked young actor, Nate Parker, had realized a long-standing dream by making his writing-directing debut – one that, in addition to drawing raves at Sundance in January, was being cheered as a much-needed corrective to the chronic underrepresentation of black stories and artists that inspired the #OscarsSoWhite campaign.

In short, it was a story of pluck, perseverance and social conscience – the kind of back story that the movie marketers who gather at these kinds of festivals dream of. And surely part of the reason that Fox Searchlight Pictures decided to pay a record-breaking $17.5 million for the film.

But now the story has changed, as Parker has sought to answer questions surrounding a sexual assault he and his co-writer were accused of perpetrating while both were sophomores at Penn State in 1999.

After weeks of conversation inside and outside the industry, it’s now clear that theater owners will proceed with plans to screen “Birth of a Nation” – and let audiences decide what to make of it.

But hesitations remain. And it has reopened the perpetual debate about whether, and how, to separate the art from the artist.

deciding to see a new movie by Mel Gibson, Roman Polanski or Woody Allen. (In fact, Gibson premiered his new “Hacksaw Ridge” at the Venice Film Festival to an enthusiastic response.)

But the calculus could be harder for Parker. Not only does he star in “The Birth of a Nation” as Nat Turner – appearing in nearly every frame for most of the movie – but its plot, with themes of sexual violence and exploitation, is poised to chime uneasily with the accusations against him.

The charges against Parker and his longtime friend Jean McGianni Celestin have always been part of the public record of his life, if little explored until now: A fellow student maintained that the two men, collegiate wrestlers at the time, had sex with her despite the fact that she was too inebriated to give consent. Parker

was found not guilty; Celestin was convicted but won the right to a new trial on appeal, and prosecutors decided not to retry him.

But Parker’s attempts to address this matter in 2016 have been nearly as troubling as the original allegations. His initial interviews with the Hollywood trade press, given so that he could get ahead of the story before awards season got underway, veered from tone-deaf to startlingly insensitive – especially after it came to light that the young woman in question took her own life in 2012.

Earlier, she had sued the school for not protecting her from what she said was a harassment campaign that Parker and Celestin led against her.

“I was thinking about myself,” Parker admitted to Ebony reporter Britni Danielle regarding those earlier interviews. “And what I realized is that I never took a moment to think about the woman.”

With Fox Searchlight’s strongest marketing hooks – a prolonged Oscar campaign and Parker’s personal appearances on behalf of the film – now effectively scuttled, it remains to be seen whether the misgivings that have built up around the filmmaker can be banished, or at least managed, enough for the film to have a viable life when it opens in theaters Friday.

Review by Mandy Mikulencak First, let me be clear that author Donald Ray Pollock isn’t for everyone. His Southern Gothic fiction is seedy, violent and often shocking. Yet he’s one of my favorite writers because he is a master storyteller. There’s nothing fancy in his spare, coarse prose. It’s gut-wrenchingly real, daring you to look away when you know you damn well can’t.

I bought “The Heavenly Table” in hardback the day it was released because I have a feeling I’ll be a Pollock fan for many years. His debut novel, “The Devil All the Time,” is the better of the two books, so read that one first. Then hightail it over to Maria’s and buy “The Heavenly Table.” If you love the first, you’ll at least be satisfied by the second.

The current book follows the young Jewett brothers – Cane, Cob and Chimney. When their father dies, they decide to emulate a dime-novel hero called Bloody Bill Bucket. In 1917, they begin a crime spree on horseback, not realizing how quickly robbing banks turns to murder and how their infamy is based mostly on tall tales spun by the newspapers. Several plot threads introduce a host of characters the Jewetts run into along the way: An illiterate elderly farmer and his wife, dirt poor after being swindled out of their savings; a bum who subsists on the charity of widows; a sanitation inspector with a

writing is beyond beautiful.

I happen to like Pollock’s personal story as well.

Born in 1954, Pollock has lived his entire adult life in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he worked at the Mead Paper Mill as a laborer and truck driver until age 50. He then started writing, earned his MFA and is now lauded as a literary master of Southern fiction, joining the ranks of Flannery O’Connor and Cormac McCarthy.

Take my advice and don’t look away. Pollock is one to watch.

Know your dabs: Shatter, wax, budder, crumble and oil So, you want to dab? This corner of the cannabis universe is where much of the interesting innovation has settled over the past decade or so. There is a wide variety of options produced through the use of ever-evolving technology in the pursuit of greater yields, greater potency and the cleanest, purest marijuana products available on the market.

“Dabs” are not one specific thing, but, rather, one of several possible preparations, by different solvents, of raw cannabis that greatly increase the potency of the marijuana in a fashion similar to that which has been applied for centuries to create essential oils from any variety of plants; the range of final products varies, from viscous goo to very stable, almost crystalline structure and go by the monikers of shatter, wax, budder, crumble and oil. The general name derives from the process of ingesting them, during which a small, grain of rice-sized (or larger ... You do you) “dab” is applied to a heated surface, then inhaled.

These potent extracts are derived from either the “buds” (aka flowers) and/or THC crystal-laden “trim,” the smaller leaves that grow directly next to the buds and are generally removed during the process of manicuring the buds in order to create the final product in preparation for distribution. The iconic seven-fingered marijuana leaf, known as a fan leaf, is, ironically, the only part of the plant that is useless with regard to creating a high for the user; its utility is the process of photosynthesis and it carries no psychoactive compounds.

Let’s take a closer look at the five varieties of dabs: Shatter

Budder Budder is a concentrate that is whipped during refining to create a viscous substance reminiscent of nut butters. It loses its translucency and, often, some of its potency as a result of the presence of more terpenes (oils found in cannabis and other plants, especially conifers and citrus plants – a topic for another day). The trade-off in potency is the balanced retention of these flavorful oils, vital components for many cannabis connoisseurs. Budder can be stored in parchment or in a container.

Crumble ble preparation. It comes in the form of an amber-colored, flat, glassy slab that is reminiscent of a Jolly Rancher stick. It is generally able to be handled by hand without too much mess or very easily manipulated with a dab tool, which can be warmed slightly in order to cause the shatter to adhere to it. Shatter is an easy material to transport using either parchment paper or a specifically manufactured silicone-coated container.

Crumble is a type of harder, more crystalline wax that almost resembles brown sugar in its consistency and is the easiest preparation to handle. It can be kept in a silicone or glass container.

Oil Now, technically speaking, all of the above preparations of cannabis (and several others) are actually “oils” of varying degree, but an interesting preparation of cannabis, especially for medical purposes is the ethanol-derived hash oil sometimes known as Rick Simpson (after its major modern proponent) or RSO. As we have nearly spent our time together here today, please return next week for more information on this highly potent, highly medicinal (highly sticky) product.

Wax Wax is a substance very similar to shatter in its potency and chemical composition, but the physical properties are quite different as a result of an intermingling of the constituent parts during preparation. This results in a product that is no longer clear and that loses its hard

‘Westworld’ If you felt like getting stoned and watching “Game of Thrones” was too intense an experience, you might want to skip HBO’s newest big-budget stunner “Westworld.”

This sci-fi Western is dark and violent and quite keen on depicting the very worst humanity has to offer. Based on a 1973 film written and directed by Michael Crichton (the writer behind “Jurassic Park”), “Westworld” takes place in a fictional theme park populated by synthetic androids that resemble human beings and are referred to as “Hosts,” each assuming the role of a different Western archetype (bandit, saloon keeper, prostitute, sheriff).

Rich visitors stream into the park each day, paying to experience life in the gunslinging Wild West far-removed from the uptight constraints of modern society. The guests gamble, drink, screw prostitutes, shoot bandits, and their Hosts aren’t allowed to fight back ... theoretically. But if you’re familiar with “Jurassic Park,” you’ll know theme park attractions have a nasty habit of veering off-script.

The sins of “Westworld” are more adult, of course. Tourists insult, murder or rape the robots, perhaps operating under the assumption that Hosts are inhuman and thus unable to feel pain.

The androids have their memories wiped at the end of every day, only to begin reliving their repetitive story loops in the morning, interacting with the same tourists as if for the first time (but content and free of trauma). We are also privy to those humans operating behind-the-scenes in a command center (like the park’s creator Dr. Robert

by Anthony Hopkins). These guys sit around watching a digital projection of the park and making sure everything is going according to plan.

The blondest robot, a rancher’s daughter named Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), appears innocent and sweet – but the park has been open for 30 years, and Dolores is its oldest model. What memories does she have stored? What horrors has she witnessed in that time? Something tells me we’re going to find out. At the conclusion of the pilot episode, Dolores exhibits behavior defying her programming. Maybe she’ll eventually lead a robot rebellion. Stay tuned.

Here’s when you see a true vulvovaginal health expert A question on your favorite topic, Dan. Just kidding, it’s a question about my vagina. I’m having a problem with the microbiome of my vulva and vagina. I’ve been going to my gyno for the last six months for recurrent bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. She shrugs, gives me a script, the symptoms go away for a week or so, then they come back. I understand the infections are likely due to an imbalance in my vaginal pH, but I don’t know what to do to fix this. I’ve used probiotic suppositories to boost the amount of lactobacillus and these help more than anything else, but the problem remains. I also wear cotton, loose-fitting undies and practice good hygiene and never douche or use anything scented. The problem started when I stopped using condoms with my partner, but it’s not an STI. We’ve both been tested. There’s tons of sites online talking about this problem, but no one has a solution that I’ve found.

How the hell can women with this problem fix their pH?! Thanks a ton if you read this far, and thanks a million tons if you or one of your experts has any ideas to help.

Vexed Und Lacking Vaginal Answers “I love that she used the word ‘vulva,’” said Dr. Debby Herbenick, a research scientist at Indiana University, a sexual health educator at the Kinsey Institute, and the author of “Read My Lips: A Complete Guide to the Vagina and Vulva” and numerous other books. “Most people have no idea what that even is!”

I know what that is! (Full disclosure: I know what that is now. I didn’t know what that was when I started writing this column.) The vulva is (the vulva are?) the external genitalia of the female – the labia, the clit, the vaginal opening, some other bits and pieces.

(Fun fact: Vulva is Latin for wrapper.)

The vagina, aka “the muscular tube,” runs from the vulva to the uterus. (Fun fact: Vagina is Latin for the sheath of a sword.) People tend to use “vagina” when referring to a woman’s junk generally, and while meaning follows use

and I’m inclined to give it a pass, saying “vagina” when you mean “vulva” makes scientists like Dr. Herbenick rather teste. (Sad fact: Teste is not the singular form of testes.) Now back to your vulva and vagina, VULVA ...

Dr. Herbenick recommends seeing a “true vulvovaginal health expert” (TVHE) about your problem, VULVA, and your gynecologist presumably qualifies as a TVHE ... right?

“Not necessarily,” said Dr. Herbenick.

“Gynecologists know far more about vaginal and vulvar health issues than most health care providers, but many gynecologists haven’t received deepdive (pun not intended) specialized training in difficult-to-treat vulvovaginal health conditions. And if they have, it was likely when they were in med school – so years ago. They might not be up to date in the latest research, since not all doctors go to vulvovaginal-specific conferences.”

Is there a fix for that problem?

“Yes! If everyone lobbied for their doctors to go to events like the annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD),” said Dr. Herbenick, “we would live in a country with millions more happy, healthy, sex-interested women and others with vaginas and vulvas, too, like trans men.”

As for your particular problem – a tough case of bacterial vaginosis – Dr. Herbenick, who isn’t a medical doctor but qualifies as a TVHE, had some thoughts.

“There are many different forms of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and different kinds of yeast infections,” said Dr. Herbenick. “These different kinds respond well to different kinds of treatment, which is one reason home yeast meds don’t work well for many women. And all too often, health care providers don’t have sufficient training to make fine-tuned diagnoses and end up treating the wrong thing. But if VULVA’s recurrences are frequent, I think it’s a wise idea for her to see a true specialist.”

A TVHE is likelier to pinpoint the

problem. Even so, Dr. Herbenick warns that it may take more than one visit with a TVHE to solve the problem.

“I don’t want to over-promise, since BV remains a challenging diagnosis and often does come back at some point,” said Dr. Herbenick. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to BV, which is also why I think VULVA is best off meeting with a health care provider who lives and breathes vaginal health issues. The ISSVD is full of health care providers like that – they’re the Sherlock Holmes of vaginas and vulvas, none of this ‘shrug and here’s a script’ business. I have a question about biking and female genitalia. I’m a woman in my forties, and I love biking! My husband and I often go for long rides on the weekend. Unfortunately, this makes various parts of my crotch sore, especially the clitoris. Certain bike seats are better, but none eliminate the soreness. Two years ago, we had a baby, which not only made my crotch more prone to soreness but makes it a lot less likely that we’ll have sex except on weekends, often after biking.

The sore clit makes sex more painful, but it also increases sensitivity, so the whole thing can be an alternating experience of “Ow!” and “Wow!” Am I causing my clit any permanent damage by the biking and/or the post-bike poking? Any suggestions for decreasing crotch soreness?

Bike Related Injury To Clit; Help Ease Soreness “I love biking, I love vulvas, and I love babies (mine, and I’m sure I would adore BRITCHES’s baby, too!),” said Dr. Herbenick, “so I appreciate being asked to chime in on this question. That said, there’s not a ton of research on female genital health in connection with cycling.”

There’s far more research on men and cycling, due to the risks of bike-seat-related erectile dysfunction specifically and our society’s tendency to prioritize boners generally.

“The few studies that have been conducted on women and cycling – generally cisgender women as far as I can tell – found that cutout seats are linked with a higher risk of genital symptoms, as are handlebars that are lower than the saddle,” said Dr. Herbenick. “So broader saddles and higher handlebars may be the way to go. Some of the research notes higher rates of genital symptoms among people who go on longer rides, spending hours in the saddle.”

To decrease your risk of un-fun genital symptoms, BRITCHES, Dr. Herbenick recommends mixing it up.

“Go biking some weekends and try other activities on other weekends – maybe hiking or swimming? You might also take Dan’s ‘[bleep] first’ Valentine’s Day advice and apply it to your weekend rides. And if you’re prone to post-intercourse semen leakage (and, really, who isn’t?) use a condom or have him come elsewhere pre-ride so you don’t have the semen seepage issue to contend with on a long ride. I hope this helps!”

Time to bust out the lederhosen It’s Oktoberfest time again, and this year, the weekend is jampacked.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, head down to Buckley Park in Durango and check out two days of music, games, food and, of course, beer.

Beer’s coming to you courtesy of Durango Bootlegger’s Society and includes Ska, Steamworks, Carvers, Animas Brewing Co. and Durango Brewing Co.
