Winter Love it

My election obsession has left me weary, ready to move on

I

am exhausted and I want my life back.

Reading and thinking and talking about this presidential election has consumed so much of my life, and for more than a year, I have immersed myself in it willingly and enthusiastically. But, this past weekend, I finally had my fill. And I desperately want out.

If you count the 1.5 hours of reading in the morning and the 1.5 hours at night and the .5 hour of reading during the day, every day, every week, it’s the equivalent of a 25-hour-a-week parttime job for more than a year. Let’s say I worked at a coffee shop and made $10 an hour (for the sake of me not having to get out of this chair for a calculator). That’s $1,000 a month I have been squandering while lying in my bed staring at a screen, informing and infuriating myself. I could’ve amassed enough to buy a sizeable tiny home!

I recall writing in early April how I needed a break from my election intake, looking forward to an artist residency at Willowtail in Mancos as a sound reason to tune out for a bit.

That was six months ago!

And it has only spiraled deeper. In early September, unable to meet my fix, I purchased a subscription to The Washington Post because of rumblings that reporter David Fahrenthold and crew was in line to win a Pulitzer for coverage of this presidential election, including perhaps the biggest game-changer in this election, the tape of Donald Trump boasting of sexually assaulting women. This on top of my New York Times subscription, and my two news aggregators. I do not kid: The base of my right palm has ached continuously from bracing my iPad so much.

This doesn’t include time spent watching every debate, including last fall’s primary debates, or the John Oliver or Stephen Colbert segments on YouTube, or the SNL sketches, or the Johnny Depp spoof “Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie,” or George Saunders’ wonderful New

Yorker political travel piece “Who Are All These Trump Supporters?” or PBS’ highly informative and unsettling documentary “The Choice 2016,” which uncovers the motivations behind HRC and DJT throughout their early, professional and now presidential-aspiring lives, or ... please stop me.

My obsession did have its benefits.

I felt informed, getting information consistently and thoroughly from trustworthy and reputable sources, ingesting the nuance of print journalism from the doggedness of some of the world’s best reporters. I took comfort in amassing in-depth knowledge.

Non-partisan, fact-based reporting does wonders for one’s anxiety.

I’ve sat at tables with friends and acquaintances and when the topic of the election came up, I’d have to go around the table, looking into everyone’s eyes trying to gauge interest level and not entering the conversation unless I get assuredness that those present were “ready to do this,” for fear I would end up vomiting months’ worth of information, facts and opinions onto the dinner table, leaving everyone with PTSD. I’ve had friends who have told me about their screaming matches with family members, friendships unraveling, Twitter battles with strangers.

I’ve had dreams about Donald Trump, from having a heart-to-heart with him, asking him to dig deep to find the good within (ha!), to breaking in to homes in my childhood neighborhood with him and a group of ne’er-do-wells, and then unsuccessfully trying to get some fumbling high school kid to video Trump running away in his suit and dress shoes after we were all caught.

I’m so ready to move on as the mental and emotional load has become too much. But given all this, I hope that, starting next Wednesday, we can forget this nightmare, go back to being civil, be able to look one another in the eyes, accept the reality we have voted ourselves into and get back to more productive lives.

Every year around September, like clockwork, I think smugly: “Autumn is my favorite time of year. This is incredible.” But then November rolls around, and every single year, I suddenly remember: “Autumn isn’t my favorite time of year.

It’s winter.”

I love the holidays, even though I’m not religious in the slightest. I love the commercials they play on TV at Christmastime; the Gap and Old Navy have all their models decked out in ugly striped scarves, rolling around in fake snow and it’s great. There are sparkly strings of lights on houses, and the stores are selling tinsel, pine trees and chocolate shaped like reindeer. I love all the Christmas tunes, mostly the really sad songs like “I’ll be Home for Christmas” or Joni Mitchell’s “River.” There’s something melancholy about the winter, maybe because the entire holiday season is so full of hope and also full of despair at the same time. There’s this tremendous build-up and excitement, and then it happens and it’s over and it’s often not as good you thought it would be, and there’s nothing left to look forward to for months except slush and gray days.

My favorite thing about winter, though, is snow. For the last three months of the season, snow is dirty and inconvenient and depressing. But for the first two months, it’s supremely magical. There’s nothing like seeing flakes swirling outside through the window when you’re warm and dry inside. Or that muffled noise snow makes when it falls in the woods and all the trees are frosted over and asleep.

Hate it Summer is all about opportunity and freedom, soaking in the sun, relaxation, music, friends and lawn games. Spring and fall are about hope and change, new beginnings and reflection, a delightful mix of warm and cool. Winter is nothing but sleep and dormancy. The smartest of the animals say, “Forget this, I’m finding me a warm cave. Let me know when it’s March.”

Winter is about scraping ice off windshields, and I am now a lifetime 0 for 26 with ice scrapers, no matter how much I spend. Winter is about the skies getting dark at 5 p.m.

– the sun even says “No, thanks” – and longing for those long summer nights of golden skies at 8:45 p.m. It’s about not getting to commute on my bike, as the bike lanes are often covered with snow, ice or sand and salt. It’s about having to lug around coats, wrapping one’s self mummy-like in scarves and long johns. It’s about flat and mussed hair because of the hat necessities. In winter, going outside becomes a thing, one more hassle we have to deal with.

Winter is like doing time, the stale air teeming with flu and bitterness from being shut in with loved ones and viruses. I think we should take a vote to decide that this despicable season should take up maybe a month out of the year. Long enough for us to be cold and miserable, enough for us to say, “OK, Winter, enough. I get it, you bastard.”

Everything’s been harvested, my beds are bare. Now what?

Till it up. One of the keys to insect control is to till it up in the fall, because if you leave the leaf litter on the surface, the insects can overwinter in that. If you till them under, there’re other organisms and predators in the soil that control them for you. I like to go in and till after the first frost and then till it again a few weeks later. Cleanliness is the main thing to keep your garden over the winter.

What does tilling do for the soil?

Around here, we tend to run high pH, which is a measure of alkalinity, and this time of year, tilling the vegetative materials goes a long way to balancing the pH because you add organic matter. Nitrogen is pretty expensive, especially organic nitrogen, and I ask them, “Well, how much do you need?” and they tell me that they have no idea. Well, I don’t, either!

Without a soil test, you can’t know. A lot of times in our soil, because it’s so alkaline, plants will go yellow even though they have adequate nitrogen. The problem usually is that the pH is too high. You could put nitrogen on them all summer long and they’d still be yellow. That’s where a soil test can prove really helpful.

Rather than spend $50 on nitrogen, you could spend $25 on a soil test and then spend $5 on sulfur and save yourself $20. We stress soil testing for exactly that reason. All the nutrient in the world David Holub/DGO won’t improve plant growth if the rest of the chemistry is incorrect. Salts are another problem. You can have high salts, and the only way to get rid of them is to add water – good water, clean water. If you add well water from the salty ground, you’ll only get saltier soil.

What do you enjoy most about gardening? The problem solving?

To me, growing plants is easy. I’ve been doing it for almost 40 years now. The challenge is the pest control, the soils. Soils are fascinating, and they’re different.

Even here, this garden plot is different than that garden plot and they’re 10 feet away. They vary greatly in small geographic areas. That variation is dictated by history and what’s been grown in them historically, whether they’ve ever been fertilized – it’s just a fascinating field. And every year is different. Weather is different, pests are different, it’s all fascinating.

The Contingents show why they’re a Colorado super-group

T

he idea of the “super-group” is at times defined as musicians from different, one-time successful bands coming together to write and record new music. In some circles, this can be classic rock people or other musicians from bands on the state fair circuit. I will add to that definition “seekers of a cash-grab,” or musicians coming together in an effort for some extended glory whose fans have outgrown the music, or just been tired and bored by the sounds that have defined their earlier success. »» The Contingents (from left): Jacob Jolliff, Greg Garrison and Alwyn Robinson.

For a definition of what these three will play, expect cuts that would be heard in the sets of their full-time bands, along with a musical curveball thrown here and there. The bluegrass-based bands they belong to always explore other genres, from the improvisation of jazz to a crowd-friendly cover.

“I think we’ll be able to stay in a pretty interesting range, from nice, simple folk tunes but all the way to some relatively complex, instrumental, jazz-oriented acoustic music, too,” said Courtesy photo Garrison.

Joliff studied at Berklee, Robinson studied percussion in college and Garrison teaches Music Entertainment and Industry Studies at the University of Colorado. As students or teachers of music, they continue a pursuit of both its art and role in the overall world of popular or not-so-popular culture. The larger scene they play in continues to attract a perennial fan base present at annual shows or festivals; fans are there, and side projects satisfy a personal musical exploration.

“Obviously it’s an amazing thing to be in Leftover or YMSB,” said Garrison. “But it’s nice at times be able to create our own little world within this bigger jam community that we all know and love, and are thrilled to be a part of. But we step away and can jump into another band and put the focus on the music that we’re all about collectively, it’s cool and exciting.”

[sound] What’s new Berwanger,“Exorcism Rock” Available: Friday, Nov. 4, via Doghouse Records as a compact disc, on standard black vinyl and numerous limited-edition vinyl LP formats, including multiple color splatters and “color in color” versions.

Lawrence, Kansas-based band Berwanger is set to release the latest album from the late ’90s, early oughts indie/emo rocker and former Anniversary front-person, Josh Berwanger. It has been two years since the last proper full-length from the

indie veteran, but two years spent rather decidedly and deliberately. The actual recording of “Exorcism Rock” concluded in mid-December 2014, though Berwanger and co. wanted the record to be released on their terms and time frame. Rather than just releasing it and moving on, it was important that the record came out on the right label and with the right sort of enthusiasm from that end. After a shopping list dwindled from 20 or so labels, Berwanger decided on Doghouse Records, which has released albums from Limbeck, The All-American Rejects, The Get Up Kids and Matt Pond, among others.

Doghouse ended up being the perfect home for “Exorcism Rock,” a record full of indie pop-punk hooks and sing-a-long anthems fans of Berwanger have become accustomed to. The title track off “Exorcism” hearkens to some of the best Anniversary material, in sound and structure, with little let up after. The record careens in and out of varying styles, seamlessly, including garage punk, power pop and indie rock.

New at Southwest Sound Nov. 5 1. Common, “Black America Again” Fresh off his Oscar win for his song from “Selma,” Common continues to make relevant and beautiful music about the essence of soul, the strife that blossoms beauty. “Black America Again” breaks down the rigid dichotomy that has run the lives of Americans of color for so long, presenting the idea that the color of one’s skin has been synonymous with sin and evil for as long as they can remember, and even further back than that. It’s an idea that many of us white Americans have never had to confront before, and with Common’s new album, maybe people will be able to understand these ideas instead of immediately crying foul. But then, I doubt many of those types of people listen to Common anyways. The album also features a stellar production crew including Karriem Riggins and Robert Glasper, as well as features from Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu and others.

2. Crippled Black Phoenix, “Bronze” This UK dark rock collective has flown under the radar since its inception in 2004. Featuring former members of Iron Monkey, Electric Wizard, Gonga, Mogwai and Teeth of Lions Rule The Divine, CBP is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist mastermind Justin Greaves, who seems to entirely eschew traditional genre. The moment you think you have a grasp of what is

happening in your ears, a metal song will suddenly have banjo. A Genesis-type rock song will slowly morph into rockabilly riffs. The band calls their songs “end time ballads,” and that is one thing that can help keep the sound cohesive.

5. Bon Jovi,“This House Is Not For Sale” This marks 14 albums for Bon Jovi, an accomplishment I think most did not expect the band to ever accomplish.

What is there to even say about Bon

Jovi? They make powerful arena rock with a message of strength and individuality. Sometimes this world needs a band like Bon Jovi. Maybe now is the perfect time for some new Bon Jovi.

Though this is the first album without mainstay guitar player Richie Sambora, so maybe the dream does have to end.

3. Thomas Giles,“Velcro Kid” Thomas Giles is the solo output of musician Tommy Rogers, best known as the singer and keyboardist for visionary metal band Between The Buried and Me. Tommy’s solo stuff sounds like a blend of Gary Numan-esque new wave and singer songwriters like Damien Rice or Ben Harper. This new one even has a bit of an industrial bent to it. I can guarantee you will find a sound you have never heard before on “Velcro Kid.” Rogers has a brilliant voice and a brilliant mind for composition. Just don’t go in expecting him to scream like he does on the Between The Buried and Me records.

4. STRFKR,“Being No One Going Nowhere” The album title may get one feeling a little bleak, and, to some, it could be.

Joshua Hodges sees the album as an invitation to ego death, embracing the age of the fear of missing out and “becoming insignificant.” This album was crafted in the desert (the best place to experience a little ego death) and seems chemically engineered to make you dance and forget your worries. The beats are sticky with sugar and the vocal harmonies are devious little earworms that had even a cynical

Sales and distribution: The side of beer that can get shady

T

here’s this commercial on TV a lot right now. I don’t know what it’s for, (maybe beer-based Viagra? Maybe beer credit cards? Beer insurance?) but it’s got this chubby, middle-aged white dude who owns a brewery or a tap room or something, and it has all the hipster trappings of cool, with light fixtures and industrial chic, and with the help of whatever the advertiser is advertising (probably beer-Viagra), the brewery becomes full of people drinking the brewery’s brews.

And yeah, just like that, we have a very successful entrepreneur.

even if middle-aged white dude can brew some good beer, the beer industry is a lot more complex and intense than TV or even my little worker brain can understand; it’s so much more than just brewing. There’s this whole other part of the industry that I rarely talk about, the third tier in the three-tier system. It’s the most regulated part, where all the money actually changes hands. It’s the part of the system where people talk about SKUs, placement and incentives. It’s the part of the system where there is actual, fierce, cutthroat competition: Sales and distribution.

This is also the part of the industry that I know the least. I have gone on a few beer runs here and there, and I have leaned in when salesmen come by a bar I’ve been working at, and I’ve worked closely with sales reps fulfilling their duties out in the public, but it’s never been my primary duty to sell or deliver beer. I’m around it enough to know I’m pretty turned off by the culture. It can be a shady, underhanded world.

I’ve seen reps throw in extra cases on orders, and if anyone asks, it’s “Oh, this is our new seasonal. You want this.” I’ve seen taps switched out in exchange for massive discounts: “I’ll give you four kegs for the price of one if you pull that handle right now.” I’ve seen reps kowtow to distributors: “They want to distribute us, but they’re only going to take the one brand and only pick up 800 cases, once every other month.” Hell, I’ve even seen beer unnecessarily and disastrously rushed, because the distributor has a truck parked waiting for the beer in the loading dock. Most of the shadier stuff is with the mega-brewers, but there’s the occasional shifty craft rep, too. And this is just what I’ve seen in and around the craft side, I can’t even imagine what the big beer companies do to each other (snorting lots of beer-Viagra and cuddling in piles of money, I bet).

Don’t get me wrong though, I love my sales reps. Most of the time, they love beer and beer drinkers more than anybody. They also know more about the flaws and f-ups that their own beer has, because they work more directly with the customers. If the craft beer revolution has a battlefield, the reps are directly in the shit, day in and day out.

Some of this shady stuff comes

from breweries themselves. They want to be far and wide. They don’t really think about depth. They’d rather be in bottle shops in Seattle, San Francisco or New York, than in every gas station or liquor store in every little town for 50 miles. They’d rather get a corporate deal to have their beer on some commercial airline or some shitty celebrity-themed restaurant chain, than have it served at the dive bar across town.

This alienation from where and how the beer gets out into the world after I make it is pretty frightening to me. I know other brewers who have mostly worked at brewpubs are usually as equally shocked and frightened as I am when we hear sales reps tell their horror stories. It actually downright disgusts me most of the time. (I do not envy the shit you guys go through.)

I’ve always wanted to dabble with the sales/distribution side, for a change of scenery if nothing else, but I always get the same words from brewers who have done the sales thing: It will kill your love for beer. And that would be the worst thing ever. At some point I’ll have to dive into that world more, but till then, I’ll plug my ears and close my eyes.

She currently teaches in Telluride at the Ah Haa School, and starting in November will be doing classes at the Wilkinson Public Library. Colorado’s Western Slope Poet Laureate (2015-17), her work has appeared on “A Prairie Home Companion,” in O Magazine and on rocks she leaves around Telluride. Trommer’s most recent book, “Even Now,” pairs her poetry with three-line drawings by artist Jill Sabella. She’ll be appearing at Maria’s Bookshop on Wednesday, Nov. 9, for a reading. We spoke to Trommer about why she writes and posts a poem online every single day and how to make poetry more accessible.

The work I’ve done is with people who have lost someone, not for the people in hospice themselves. They’re looking for tools to help with their grief. One thing that poetry asks of us is to be vulnerable, curious, to pay attention

to the world around us and our own emotional state. With grief, even though it can be very painful to write about death and loss, there’s also a beauty and honoring in it. And the ability to work through some very difficult things, if you had a difficult relationship with the person.

There’s plenty of room for paradox in poetry – in fact, poetry thrives on paradox. So for a poem to have beauty and loss in the same line, or grief and disgust, it thrives on that.

You write and post a poem every single day on your blog. Can you talk about that?

Comedian Sean Patton in Durango, one night only Sean Patton’s brand of stand-up is story-centric, filled with lengthy and complicated tales eventually weaving themselves into something absurdly hilarious. He has performed on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” Conan, @midnight, Comedy Central’s “The Half Hour,” “The Meltdown,” “This Is Not Happening” and more. Daniel Korman, founder of Durango’s Laugh Therapy, has invited Patton to perform this Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Irish Embassy. We spoke with Patton about why he won’t talk politics in his act, the reason you should never take a comedy class and how human flaws unite us.

Do you ever research the demographics in places you’ll be performing and adjust your jokes accordingly? Like if you’re going to a conservative town, you won’t make jokes about abortion?

medians are sadder or more prone to anxiety and depression than the average person? Is there any truth to that, or are comedians just more open to admitting that stuff?

I think comedians are definitely more open as people, their willingness to share these dark personal secrets. That’s like my tagline, or if I had to sum it up: I’m all about exposing the beauty of human flaw. We all have it, it’s the one thing that unites the entire human race – we’re all flawed in some way. For generations, men and especially women are taught to ignore it, pretend like you’re not flawed, don’t be open about it, don’t talk about farting, don’t mention you have a drinking problem, don’t publicly discuss this disgusting thing you did.

But we all do those things, so instead of ignoring it and making people feel isolated and alone ...

Just talk about it, get it out there. I think that’s the only negative side effect of creativity; if you’re a creative human being, it often comes with a side effect of anxiety or OCD or depression. It’s your brain basically being creative in negative ways.

As comics, what we spend our life doing, trying to make strangers happy, does come at a price.

I used to really adjust. Even to this day, to a very slight fraction I may. But for the most part, no. Any kind of art form, if you take it seriously, you can’t please everyone. It’s impossible; there’s no point in trying. People think, ‘Well, it’s comedy, you should be able to make anyone laugh.’ But I don’t agree with that. Some people are just not going to see things your way, and taking something I think is hilarious, and that people like me think is hilarious, then trying to reshape it to make someone who just doesn’t agree with it think it’s hilarious, isn’t going to make for a very good product. I tend to avoid things like politics anyway. Everyone else is already doing that. We all know Trump’s an idiot, Hillary’s a thief, blah blah blah. We get it. I feel like if you’ve watched me perform, you can figure out where I stand. I consider myself left-leaning, but I feel like the subjects I do approach onstage, I approach not from a leftist point of view, but from a human point of view. This is how I feel about women as a man who respects women. This is how I feel about minorities as a man who respects minorities. I’m not trying to force an agenda or tell you how stupid you are if you’re a card-carrying member of the NRA.

Any advice for comedians just starting out?

Are there any subjects that are off limits for you, joke-wise?

Truth be told, there’s a lot of subjects that I find just boring. I tend to not talk about the pros and cons of dating, because that shit’s boring to me. I’m not like this 6-foot 3-inch sculpted-out-of marble Greek god – I’m a short, pudgy, bearded guy – but I’ve never found dating to be that difficult or that bizarre of a thing. A lot of my colleagues go onstage and talk about dating like it’s cracking some sort of [effing] omega code. For the most part, I try and find topics that feel real to me, that inspire me. I like to feel at all times that I’m saying something because I believe it’s funny, not because I believe the audience will think it’s funny.

You’ve spoken openly about living with OCD. What about the cliché that co-

Understand that if you haven’t started yet, it’s far more difficult than you even think it is right now. It’s so hard. I think about ballet dancers, like yeah, that’s physically difficult, I couldn’t do it.

But I still think being funny is harder. It’s such a specific thing, and it cannot be taught. So do not take comedy classes! They are a hoax and a ripoff.

I know that statement will probably piss off a lot of people who take comedy classes. Well, [eff] you for teaching comedy classes. It’s comedians who were never that good who need to make some money.

Everything you need to learn about stand-up, you will learn in a far more pure, organic, real way by simply doing it. Allow it to be hard. Don’t get on stage and think you’re going to be famous in a year or five years. Yeah, it happens from time to time, people get plucked. But don’t try and be that person. Do it because you love it, and strap in. It’s a long ride.

he Fallen Angel is the only adult boutique, lingerie company OR costume store in town. They stock everything your filthy mind could possibly dream up, either online or in their store on Main (a new location). They’ve got sexy costumes (French maid, nurse), sex toys (stimulators for all male and female regions, vibrators of every shape and size, strap-ons), lotions, garters, pasties (shaped like foxes, aliens, marijuana leaves), supplies for bachelor and bachelorette parties (inflatable dolls, games), adult DVDs, condoms and lube, bondage accessories (collars, handcuffs, whips) ... the list goes on. The strangest item on the Fallen Angel website is probably the “c*#k cage,” a bondage chastity device intended for a male.

Getting into the business of pleasure Colclough bought The Fallen Angel in 2007 (the store opened in ’99). He assumed owning his own business would mean making his own schedule, permitting more time for family; but now he works more than anyone, with no other employees currently on the docket. He will be hiring for part-time nights and weekend help. Fortunately – for the sake of his sanity – the store has developed into an ardent personal passion. “We’re here to expand people’s ideas of romance and sensuality,” Colclough said.

“Or to simply give them something nice to wear under their garments.” He has eventual ambitions of becoming a sex therapist or couples counselor, loving the process of helping people achieve carnal satisfaction. In our conversation, he often referenced the importance of communication and respect between consensual lovers.

Move to Main Ave. Until very recently, the store was located on East College Drive, next to Reruns and the College Drive Café. They’ve since moved to a brand new below-ground spot at 801½ Main Ave. (Eighth Street just west of Main Avenue), behind Silk Sparrow and underneath Joel’s. Colclough is excited about the increased foot traffic, with walk-ins and tourists

who would’ve never ventured down College but are always traipsing up and down Main.

“We were looking to move downtown for seven years, but unless you’re a huge company with quite a bit of revenue to support the change, it’s just gonna drink you into bankruptcy,” Colclough said. “I was always looking for an off-the-Main-Avenue location, allowing people to have a discreet shopping experience.” Customers at the old location fretted about parking in front of the store, as someone could drive by and see their car (it’s a small town). Parking on College was also very limited, but parking abounds at the new locale, plus no one will know what store you came to peruse. The improved Fallen Angel features bigger fitting rooms, with a nice area for someone’s partner to sit and wait while they try things on.

When asked about controversy stemming from the move of a lascivious business into such prime Durango real estate, Colclough said sailing has been smooth. “I probably had more controversy – which died out immediately after I opened – over being 250 yards around the corner from a school,” he said of his East College address. Technically, adult stores are supposed to be situated in Bodo Park, but Fallen Angel doesn’t qualify as an adult shop because they sell a substantial amount of retail apparel; only 30 Continued on Page 14

The store’s most regularly-purchased goods are apparel (lingerie sets, costumes, panties, men’s underwear) and adult toys (primarily smaller, non-intimidating, first-timer, non-phallic vibrators). The Fallen Angel carries an abundance of higher-quality bras also sold at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom’s, better than those you might find at JC Penney’s or Walmart, said Colclough. “Everybody in Durango has complained, like, ‘We need a good, everyday bra that is not a super fancy bra set,’” he said. “So we’re excited to carry those.

And a lot of men don’t want crappy underwear like Hanes or Fruit of the Loom.”

As far as sex toys go, the famed

Colclough notes how many people buy the Hitachi not for sexual satisfaction, but because the wand gives off powerful vibrations ideal for self-backrubs.

As for the “first-timer” vibrators, Colclough says plenty of customers don’t know what they want when they first come into the store, but it’s fun for couples to explore together. “Don’t jump into the deep end and get some $200 item that’s app-controlled or has all these bells and whistles,” Colclough suggests. “Get something simple between $14 and $25 and communicate with your partner. See what they like.” He recommends glass as the “most hygienic and least porous of all materials that can be used for a sex toy,” adding that you can put glass products in a pot of boiling water to sanitize easily.

Fetishes of Durango So what’s the most common fetish flourishing in Durango? Based on the stuff locals buy from him, Colclough says “restraints,” a form of bondage.

You might be picturing a torture chamber outfitted in whips, chains and leather, something out of “Fifty Shades of Grey,” but Colclough would assure you it’s not nearly so intimidating. “If your partner pulls your hair, that’s a form of restraint, and that’s something most people with healthy sex lives might enjoy,” he said.

How many times have we heard that Scandinavians are the happiest people on the planet? If that’s true, it must be despite the protagonist of “A Man Called Ove,” a Swede so grouchy that he threatens to give his country a bad name.

Based on Swedish writer Fredrik Backman’s 2012 best-seller, the movie is formulaic in the manner of “St. Vincent” and “El Camino,” which were also about the curmudgeon next door: a fist-shaking geezer whose neighbors predictably help him find his heart. But this drama is a bit riskier and more intriguing.

For one thing, the movie, directed by Hannes Holm, manages to fuse melodrama with dark comedy and – no small feat 2 – make it work. The funny bits take place in the present day as the bald, paunchy Ove (Rolf Lassgard) contemplates suicide. Friendless and jobless, he spends his days enforcing his neighborhood association’s pedantic rules, which means he yells at dog owners, hisses at stray cats and leaves rude notes on badly parked cars.

The only person he cares about is his wife, and she’s dead. Still, he gazes at her photo with affection and brings flowers to her grave, where he conducts loving (if one-sided) conversations. The world is going to hell, he reasons, so he tells her he’ll be on his way to join her soon.

The problem is, every time he tries to kill himself, something goes wrong. More often than not, he’s interrupted by the family that just moved in across the way. Parvaneh (Bahar Pars), an Iranian immigrant and pregnant mother of two, is impervious to Ove’s put-downs.

Pretty soon the two of them start an unlikely friendship, as he teaches her how to drive while hilariously schooling her on the superiority of Saabs over Volvos.

childhood, which was marked by tragedy, but also warmth. How did a well-adjusted kid grow up to be a downer who refers to every person he meets as “idiot”? We get our answer slowly, in bits and pieces, learning along the way how he met and fell for his effervescent wife, Sonja (Ida Engvoll).

We’ve seen these poignant lessons before: Ove is destined to learn that he can’t do it all on his own and that life is still worth living. Yet the moving twists and turns of the love story and the bright comedy elevate an otherwise familiar story line.

The mix of genres works, too. The flashbacks might be a little cheesy at times, but that’s appropriate considering they’re filtered through Ove’s bittersweet memories.

At times, the story is far-fetched.

Ove keeps pushing people away, yet they continue to come back. The old man is lucky to be surrounded by so many gluttons for punishment. Maybe the Swedes, for all their reputation for contentment, simply have thicker skins.

Looks like Colorado will have some recreational company

T

he 2016 election cycle (most of which I dare not delve into for so many reasons) could turn out to be the most significant event to date in the march toward nationwide cannabis legalization. As of today, CBD oil from industrial hemp as a nutritional supplement is legal in all 50 states; exactly half of the union’s states have full medical marijuana programs, and 16 others have medical-CBD programs with possible expansion to Florida, North Dakota, Arkansas and a reworked program in Montana.

With ballot initiatives for full legalization in five states due to be voted on next week, citizens in Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada will decide at the polls whether to make recreational cannabis legal.

The raw numbers of the potential expansion of legalized marijuana could create a cascading effect that builds on the success of the legal cannabis movement first begun under medical premises in California 20 years ago and kicked into high gear by Colorado’s Amendment 64, the 2012 law that created the first legal recreational program in America. The population of the nine states considering expanded cannabis legalization represents nearly a quarter of the population of the U.S. overall, and the impact that full legalization in California, with its 38.8 million residents (over 10 percent of the entire nation) and $2.5 trillion economy (which ranks as the sixth largest in the world) would change the face of cannabis going forward for a generation to come.

Let’s take a state-by-state look at the five recreational cannabis ballots.

Arizona, Proposition 205:

»» Would be governed by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry. »» Includes a 10 percent tax on retail sales. »» Polling shows favorability around 53 percent and opposition in the range of 40 percent.

California, Proposition 64:

Massachusetts, Question 4 Initiative:

»» Currently has the nation’s longest-running and largest medical program. »» Would create a multibillion-dollar market. »» Would allow for the possession of up to 28.5 grams of flower or eight grams of concentrates for adults 21 years and older. »» The ability to grow up to six plants and would legalize growing industrial hemp. »» Would create excise taxes for growers and a 15 percent tax for consumers. »» The state’s current regulatory agency, the Bureau of Medical Cannabis, would be renamed the Bureau of Marijuana Control and would primarily govern cannabis matters with local boards, making decisions about the ability of residents to grow and business to exist in their locales. »» The windfall from the taxes on cannabis would go to law enforcement, impaired driving programs, medical marijuana research programs, education, substance abuse prevention, alleviation of environmental damage created by illegal marijuana grow operations and to political groups to study the effects of policy change. It would also create a system to investigate, reduce and expunge convictions for previous marijuana convictions. »» Current polling shows strong, double-digit support.

»» Has had a medical program since 2013 with over 28,000 patients. »» Would allow the possession of up to 10 ounces inside the home or one ounce outside the home for adults 21 years and older. »» Growing (indoor) of up to six plants, with a limit of 12 plants per household. »» Creation of a regulatory board, the Cannabis Control Commission, which would oversee the taxation of cannabis like alcohol at the level of the state’s sales tax plus a 3.75 percent excise tax with local governments able to add an additional 2 percent tax. Revenues would go back to the CCC with overages applied to the state’s general fund. »» Polling is currently around 50 percent in favor and 40 percent opposed.

Maine, Marijuana Legalization Act: »» Medical marijuana has been legal since 1999, allowing nonprofit dispensaries and patients to grow. »» Possession of up to 2½ ounces for adults over 21 and the possession, cultivation, and transportation of six plants, 12 immature plants and unlimited seedlings, with the possession of all cannabis grown at individual residences.

Nevada. Question 2: »» Has had a medical program since 2000. »» Possession of up to one ounce for adults over 21. »» Would allow residents who live further than 25 miles from a retail store to grow up to six plants. »» Would create a 15 percent excise tax to go to enforcement and schools. »» Approximately 50 percent in favor; approximately 40 percent opposed.

So, as the nation follows Colorado with regard to legal recreational cannabis, it looks like we could have some more company soon. In the meantime, take care of your civic duty by voting, then kick back and burn one for progress.

[Netflix and chill — 420 edition]

‘Over the Garden Wall’ We all know how frightening cartoons can be. Free from the constraints of makeup, stunts or limitations of the human body, animation can convincingly depict all the wildest fantasies live-action cannot. Most millennials recall the bizarre stylings of ’00s “CatDog” on Nickelodeon or “Courage the Cowardly Dog” on the Cartoon Network, and recent years have awarded viewers an even wider selection of dark, existential and surreal comics like “Gravity Falls” or “Adventure Time.” But “Over the Garden Wall” is unlike anything that came before it, ideal for this week’s transition of fall into winter.

It’s a miniseries (the Cartoon Network’s first) dreamt up by Patrick McHale, creative director behind “Adventure Time.” There are 10 episodes, all 12 minutes long, each tailing two brothers lost in a strange forest called The Unknown, desperately trying to wend their way home and encountering an assortment of odd creatures and places along the way. Wirt is the elder child, a neurotic and fearful fellow voiced by Elijah Wood and perpetually irritated by his younger brother Greg, a tiny sprite who is more delighted by than wary of the spooks they encounter in the woods.

Though owing much to European fairy tales and Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” (among other influences), “Over the Garden Wall” is really an homage to 19th- and 20th-century Americana and folklore. The setting is

deeply reminiscent of New England in the autumn; golden trees, shadowy forests and small villages are depicted with ornate painted backgrounds, and the mood is alternatingly chilling and playful. Most characters the brothers meet appear far more sinister than they are eventually revealed to be, and each segment is accompanied by original songs that are sad, soulful and twee in equal measure. The voicework is one of the series’ triumphs; Christopher Lloyd, John Cleese and Melanie Lynskey breathe life into mad millionaires and talking bluebirds.

The Unknown plays host to a quaint schoolhouse where animal students wear bonnets and learn lessons from a rosy-cheeked schoolmarm singing an alphabet song about her scorned lover (“‘A’ is for the apple that he gave to me, but I found a worm inside”); a gay New Orleans-style ferry chugging down a river carting frogs dressed in finery, waltzing on board; The Beast, a menacing figure who wanders the forest and threatens the brothers; Cloud City, a sanctuary in the sky (and an overt nod to early Disney) filled with sweet cherubs and houses made out of cloud fluff; and perhaps most memorably, a person called Auntie Whispers (voiced by Tim Curry, whose praises I sung only last week in “Rocky Horror”), a fright with a bloated head and a quivering voice who apparently devours human flesh on a regular basis – or does she?

Paul DeBell, FLC assistant professor of political science, will discuss his theory of how the contemporary predominance of outrageous political conflict may have unintended consequences for democracy. He will offer up examples from what’s been going on during this campaign as well as from American politics more broadly.

The presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Noble Hall, Rm. 130. This is a free event.
