From this uppity bike commuter: In car vs. bike, car wins – so take it easy

“Ugh. Cars, man. Whyyyyyy!!”

“I don’t have a driver’s license. I don’t need it!”

“I get this whole lane! Ten-feet rule! Oregon state law – 10 feet.”

“Pull your mirrors in!”

That’s Fred Armisen’s character on the sketch show “Portlandia,” an overbearing bike commuter riding around Portland with a whistle in his mouth to signal his moves. But most of the time, he’s yelling at motorists about their disregard of traffic laws as they concern bikes.

As right as Armisen’s overbearing, overzealous character may be about road rules, it is he who comes off as the nuisance, not the motorists. His arrogant, aggressive smugness makes him a caricature, and thus, the butt of the joke.

And as much as I laugh at this sketch, I am that guy – sometimes at least. As a bike commuter, at least once a day I find myself muttering, gesturing, and sometimes shouting at the actions of motorists. They’ll pass me in the bike lane too close. They’ll block my path looking to turn onto a main road. Their tailpipe will spew a more-than-average amount of exhaust. I’ll bristle. Maybe shake my head. Perhaps give a thumbs-down. “Thanks for turning me into ‘Portlandia’ guy,” I say to myself.

I do understand his rationale: He’s taken the inferiority of his vehicle – bike vs. car – and turned it into a bloated superiority of competency. Drivers think they own the roads, that it is the cyclists who have impeded on their territory.

Our bike commutes are time to get some exercise, to breathe some fresh air, to clear our heads on the way to work – but mainly they’re a time to claim our right to be here and educate drivers in the process.

It does feel a bit sanctimonious for me to attempt to educate drivers. Half the time, I’m a driver, too, and I find myself yelling at cyclists to get out of my way. Sure, there are always going to be aggressive drivers who endanger the lives of those around them, whether the endangered are in cars or on bikes. Most drivers in my experience are wonderfully respectful and accommodating of cyclists. But even good drivers lapse.

And sometimes, drivers are so accommodating that they put cyclists in danger. After commut-

ing on a bike for three years in Durango, here are the most common safety issues I face:

Treat us like cars.

Bikes are (generally) supposed to follow the rules of the road just as a car would (I know we don’t always). When I come to a stop sign or stoplight, I am going to stop just as I would if I were in a car. A problem I encounter almost daily is when I come to a two-way stop sign ready to make a left. The cars on the road I am turning on to do not have a stop sign. And yet, cars will stop in the middle of the road, halting traffic, to allow me to turn. I appreciate the gesture, but it’s still not safe for me to turn. While you may be kindly stopped, I can’t be sure all the other cars (a) see me or (b) will stop as well. In the meantime, as I stand there, I have to wave you on like an ingrate.

Love it It doesn’t get better than a wide-open afternoon and evening, an array of comfort and junk foods, and six to 12 to 24 episodes of a show you and your viewing partner love equally. Given this formula, I could binge a number of shows: “Seinfeld,” “Arrested Development,” “30 Rock,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Office (U.K.).” The smarter, the funnier, and the shorter the episodes, the easier to binge.

Intense dramas I almost have to binge: “Breaking Bad” or “The Wire,” or even light dramas: “Weeds” or “Big Love.” I have to stay in that mindset, that emotionally-taxing, at-times-distressing, roller-coaster, one episode after another. Break the chain of episodes and I’m apt to look for something sugary sweet.

Beyond basking in TV brilliance and the ever-joy of being lazy, binging feels satisfying, like at the end of a marathon you’ve accomplished something. It’s like getting through a critically-acclaimed 3.5-hour movie: It’s an achievement.

And then you get to the end of a series unexpectedly.

You wish you would have had the patience to spread your viewing out like a normal person. And it makes you love the show all the more.

Three feet.

The Colorado rule is to give cyclists 3 feet of space when passing, regardless if there’s a bike lane or not. And trust me: Three feet is not a lot of space. I’ve been buzzed by drivers, mostly unintentionally. So whatever you can safely give beyond 3 feet is appreciated. If you do have to make a close pass, at least slow down. If it’s not safe to pass, don’t pass. Giving up 10 seconds or 30 seconds or a minute so you don’t endanger someone’s life is, I think, worth it.

Be predictable.

Nearly every time I felt endangered riding my bike has been because of impatience or unpredictability on the part of a driver. You might feel safe and in control making that crazy illegal turn, or drag-racing off the line after a red light, or speeding up to beat the yellow light. But what you’ve failed to consider is what happens one and two steps ahead – the reactions of other motorists because of your unpredictable behavior.

Be aware.

Cars will inch out looking to turn onto a main road and block the bike lane or path. Cars will turn out in front of me, forcing me to brake unexpectedly. Cars will pass me then immediately make a right turn, forcing me to brake unexpectedly.

Cyclists aren’t perfect, I realize – we break just as many rules as motorists. But you know what? A car is never going to lose in a battle with a bike. We’ve handed you a lot of responsibility.

Hate it I’m not gonna be the falsifier who sits here tippy-tap-typing pretending she doesn’t binge-watch TV. Entire seasons of “Peaky Blinders” slip inside me. “Glow”?

Yup, watched that in two days. “Better Call Saul?” Tore through it faster than Gwar attacks a blood bag.

But I mean, come on, does anyone like themselves after watching six hours of TV? Your metabolism and circulation slow after that much slugabuggin. There’s a certain point during a movie marathon where I feel like crap. Instead of fun, this has turned into a black hole of couch time. There are friends I could be hanging with, French I could be studying, the walk I could be taking, or about 30,000 pounds of books still waiting to be read.

Life is so damn short and I find it slightly horrifying how much of it I have spent binge-watching bullshit like “House Hunters,” especially after finding out that studies have found TV benders lead to increased rates of inflammatory diseases like diabetes and Alzheimer’s. ::turns off TV:: ::goes for a walk with “The Dollop” podcast instead:: —— Patty Templeton

before the 6:30 p.m. class and was greeted by a man (30 or more years my senior) who asked where my partner was. Gordon wasn’t a first-timer, and through continued conversation, we organically arrived at a partnering. All night, my read on him vacillated between “real peach” and “borderline cad.” The teacher instructed the women to put our hands on our butt cheeks to get a feel for the muscle movement, and Gordon asked me, “Need another hand?”

While dancing, I was amused by his silliness and impish deviation from the steps, but he uncomfortably lingered on my back when all the other partners had released each other.

Mission 3: Learn how to twostep.

Objective: For some inexplicable reason, I was envisioning line dancing when I committed to two-stepping.

Whoops. The objective of line dancing was to learn a dance that didn’t require a partner and embrace the spirit of the cowgirl – a woman with grit who gets right back on that horse. (The latter still applies!)

Mission report Some critical stuff went down before the mission: I bumped into my ex for the first time since our break-up, and days later, made a darned fool of myself in front of his friend. For the past few months, I’d been dreading the inevitable moment when I would see Tom around town. Admittedly, I wasted a tiny portion of brainpower on petty concerns. “What if I have a zit? What if the zit is so big, it technically has me?” Most of all, I worried about the form and severity of emotional impact I’d be subjected to. Sometimes you’re chugging along, entirely devoted to your break-up recovery, and that first glimpse of your old flame triggers instantaneous agony. The reflex makes you wonder, “What happened to my progress?” This time, I was somehow spared that misery, but an equally dangerous reaction took its place – I felt deeply happy to see him. He rode up on a bike behind me as I walked, and slowed down to gently touch me. Alarmed by the contact and the unknown source, my defensive instincts kicked in: I hunched my shoulders and cowered toward the side of the walkway like a helpless turtle. Worse yet, my bulbous hiking pack looked like a shell I had outgrown.

We caught up on general life updates, broached some relationship topics, and hugged it out. Seeing him was lovely, cathartic and – for all its goodness – scary.

The encounter with Tom’s friend was a motherlode of shame. I was unseasonably sweaty when we noticed each other at the top of a trail system. In a flustered panic, I held him hostage with conversation, hoping to conjure one charming comment and save face. Instead, I took special care to expound on outlandish injuries I’m fearful of sustaining, even

though they are exclusively caused by the hijinks of Looney Tunes characters. “Do you have any weird fears?” I asked. Before long, I hit him with the question that’s on everyone’s lips this season: “Do you have any big plans for fall, such as harvesting gourds?”

He misheard me and thought I had said “boards,” so I repeated myself twice more. Enunciating the word “gourds” loudly and slowly at someone’s face is probably considered verbal assault in some states. After that performance, I regressed to juvenile prattle and mentioned five species of animals and reptiles.

As for the mission itself ... I tried not to cop a ’tude when I realized my line dance/two-step mix-up, but fresh out of a relationship, the quasi-intimacy of dancing with a stranger wasn’t sounding awesome. I considered excuses to avoid touching someone else that would be too perplexing to dispute. “Hyper-sensitive finger pads” was a top contender, along with “Moth Hand Syndrome,” a debilitating condition in which my hands disintegrate like moths upon contact.

I went to the Wild Horse Saloon on a Wednesday

Two-stepping was simple enough, the teacher was sassy and great, and the other participants were sociable ... but by nature, the activity was more couple-friendly.

Epitomizing a solitary cowboy from a Louis L’Amour novel, I left the saloon feelin’ mighty lonely.

Gordon insisted on walking me home, which is very kind in theory, except that I insisted against it no less than 10 times. I had to David Holub/DGO travel in the wrong direction to conceal my address, yet still kept my demeanor genial throughout my entreaties to be left alone; the possibility that this was an overbearing attempt at chivalry tempered my compulsion to be stern. I eventually broke free and determined my paramount takeaway from this bummer of a mission: a well-meaning gesture becomes disrespectful when it’s forced after being declined. I don’t need to maintain politeness when I’m made to feel unsafe.

Next mission: Barhop to three places alone.

Were John Waters to throw a dayglo filth rave in a shag-carpeted bathroom, My Life with the Thrill Kult would be the luxuriantly prurient electro industrial band slaying the shower-turned-stage. They’re a sample-dense, sextactular dance band founded in Chicago in 1987 by Groovie Mann and Buzz McCoy on the experimental indie label Wax Trax! Records.

Thrill Kill Kult is as feral and fabtrashtic as ever. They’re taking their berserker dark disco on the road with backup singers the Bomb Gang Girlz in tow. DGO spoke to Buzz McCoy about religion, Taylor Dane, and what to expect out of their 30th Anniversary tour.

How, in an era of Taylor Dayne and U2, did Thrill Kill Kult happen? The sound is so drastically different from the world around it.

[Laughs] When I worked at Wax Trax!, I had my little shipping world all to myself. It was just me and I was away from the label and I would blast the radio on my boombox all day long and Taylor Dayne was one of my favorites. That song, “Tell It To My Heart” – I loved it.

I’d be playing pop music on full blast and everyone at the record label would be like, “Why is he listening to pop music?” or “Shouldn’t he be listening to Laibach?”

That’d be the last stop because that was open till 4. We’d get two or three hours of sleep and go to work. It was a relaxed atmosphere. I could work a few hours then go lay down and take a nap. Fortunately, I lived right above the label, so I didn’t have far to go to bed.

Smart Bar, Dreamers was a big one.

by Wax Trax!. Neo. Berlin. We’d go to Neo to do drugs in the bathroom and then leave. Exit was where we ended up a lot. The Bomb Gang Girlz all worked there. We stole the wait staff by asking, “Hey, you wanna be in a band?”

So Taylor Dayne is partly responsible for My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult?

Was there something about Chicago that helped spawn industrial as much as it did?

Yeah. In fact, I could probably even say I stole a snare or something from one of those albums and it’s on the early recordings.

It’s a very enthusiastic city, a very welcoming city. Everyone is so into what they’re into. The dance clubs like Medusa’s – it was all ages – and they’d play all the Wax Trax! stuff. People embraced it because the clubs played it.

What were the early days in Chicago around Wax Trax! like?

I worked at the label in shipping and Groovie worked at the record store.

We were spending our nights in my bedroom on my little four-track making silly music, never thinking anything of it. We had hoped to put together this tiny horror film with some music and we didn’t know what we were doing.

We were just passing time, ya know?

We would go out to the clubs every single night, all night long. We’d hit about four or five bars a night. We’d end up at Smart Bar under Metro.

You also had all this new music coming out of the city. House music was coming up at the same time and the people who weren’t necessarily all in to house found their niche in industrial. It was mostly the dance music.

What would you say the overarching message of Thrill Kill Kult is?

Our whole philosophy is, “Be yourself and someone else, too.” Our thing is more of a cultural thing, more of an anti-religious thing. We may not be political, but we are very anti-orga-

We think religion is just as demonic as some of the government is. It’s about control. That’s one of our main messages. Just look at it. It’s nothing but images and paper dolls. Satan isn’t real, ya know? It’s kitsch, really.

Is there a movie you’d love to sample from but don’t because of legal reasons?

We sample whatever we want. We’ve never worried about legal stuff. Generally, we mask the samples. We don’t blatantly use a sample. It’s cut up so that it doesn’t say exactly what it said in the movie or its pitch changed. A woman could be saying it, but now it’s a guy. Very few samples we use are obvious.

After three decades, what’s your audience like now?

We have people bringing their kids to the show. That’s the new thing. “My son is 18 and I brought him to see you guys,” and I’m like, “Oh, geez.” They’re the kinda people who see you at the end of the show and say, “I want you

What’s the sexiest thing you’ve ever seen at a show?

I saw a couple who was [effing] through the whole set – the whole set. Against the stage and staring at us while they were [effing]. I don’t know if it’s the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. It might be something I want to erase out of my memory.

It’s probably happened a lot more than I know. Who knows what’s going on up in the balcony or over by the coat check?

I guess we are sexually inspiring.

In this case, it isn’t a debut, but rather the third long-player from Toronto, Ontario’s Beliefs and follows a 2012 self-titled debut and a 2015 release called “Leapers.” Part of my excitement does lie in the eventual experience of going back to hear the pre-existing catalog.

I also believe that records can align nicely with the seasons. An assault on the senses. The smells, the tones, an overall aesthetic. Hell, even the artwork. Such is the case with “Habitat.”

This album feels autumnal. Any time I listen to it, from here on out, I will consider this record with the fall. Jesse Crowe (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards) and Josh Korody (guitars, electronics, vocals, bass, microwave, and percussion) are joined by drummer Leon “LT Smash” Taheny (Austra, Death From Above 1979, Owen Pallett, etc.) on a record of electro-infused post-punk that is discordant, crisp, and cool, with a heavy, sometimes lethargic, pulse.

Crowe’s vocals can be entrancing, but not for long, as you lean in closer to define the texture palette she and Korody create between them.

Recommended for fans of Portishead, Suuns, The Soft Moon, Preoccupations, Siouxsie and the Banshees, or My Bloody Valentine.

Oct. 6 The Black Dahlia Murder, “Nightbringers” There is no band in any scene or subgenre as consistent as The Black Dahlia Murder. Every two years, like a true serial killer, they return with a new opus. They aren’t the most technical, and they won’t make you weep with the beauty of their songwriting, but the songs slay, each and every time. These guys are a band that have been with me for a long time, to the point when I still consider their 2007 masterpiece “Nocturnal” their “new record.” The riff on the title track on the (actual) new record is wonderful and catchy, and stands on the shoulders of some of the most memorable guitar pieces they have ever crafted.

Overall, the songs strike me as tighter than their previous efforts. The addition of new guitarist Brandon Ellis has done nothing but bolster their sound, as he does a great job of maintaining their typical sound while not letting the riffs tire themselves out.

Marilyn Manson,“Heaven Upside Down” Marilyn Manson’s career has been full of substantial ups and downs.

On top of the world in the late ’90s, crashing hard and then slowly clawing his way back up into the upper echelon of the shock rock gods.

2015’s “Pale Emperor” saw a rebirth of the classic Manson sound that was lost in the daze of the middle-2000s catalogue, and I was happy to hear that, for the most part, “Heaven Upside Down” continues this upward trajectory. The track “We Know Where You Fucking Live” is pure industrial scream-a-thon wonder, and would be at home with any of the tracks on his earlier material in “Mechanical Animals” and “Holy Wood.”

One track, “Saturnalia,” is good, but at just under seven minutes, substantially overstays its welcome. Beyond that, I think “Heaven Upside Down” is a win for Manson and will definitely satisfy fans of his sound.

JD McPherson,“Undivided Heart and Soul”

On “Undivided Heart and Soul,” JD McPherson sounds like a man out of time and space. Rootsy garage rock is how I would describe it, but garage rock carries connotations of a lack of polish or not-giving-a-shit that is decidedly absent from this album. Instead it carries itself through emotionally charged lyrics and loose but impassioned playing. The production on tracks like “Crying’s Just a Thing You Do” bring to mind old-school sounds from KC and the Sunshine Band, or Stealer’s Wheel’s “Stuck In The Middle With You” not quite with the funk flavor, but with that vintage microphone and amp sound.

Primitive Man, “Caustic” With a hiss of feedback it begins, the most pissed-off record you will ever hear. I have been following Denver doom giants Primitive Man since their inception out of the ashes of Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire. There is something very primal about their music, but at the same time, it could not exist without the strife of modern living.

“Caustic” turns a mirror on the face of human suffering. When I first heard the riff to “Victim,” I got goosebumps immediately. Metal heads understand that the drive to headbang is not something we have control over. When you feel it, you feel it, and you go goddamn crazy.

“Caustic” is a record for those that understand the power of furious and passionate music and why it is made. It will scare people, as it should.

When DGO caught up with the blastedly brilliant, absolutely fantastic Hunderman, she was awaiting the badass cellist Russick Smith to start his set at the Diamond Belle Saloon for the iAm Music Festival. She wore what could only be considered the best damn dress of the fest.

“I got it in Peru at a shop called Hilo run by a German woman. She has her sewing machine set up and she makes everything right there. You walk in and there’s one little room, like 20 by 20 and then maybe a side room about the same size. Everything in there was cool stuff.

I tried on this dress and I really liked it. I saw this and I was like, ‘Pockets! Yes.’ It’s very utilitarian and, yet, I wore it to a wedding last weekend.

I tried it on and told the owner I wanted the dress and she said, ‘Put it on again, I want to see you in it.’ I was like, ‘OK ...’ I put it on again. She was like, ‘I don’t think it fits you just right.’ And I was like, ‘Shoot ...’ and then she took my measurements and fixed it to fit my shape. Which is so cool.

It’s sturdy as heck. I get a lot of comments on my style, but I’ve been in education a long time and so my wardrobe is either workwear or outdoor gear. I struggle with what to wear on the weekend, the in-between. This dress is strange because it’s dressy but it’s not fancy-fancy. It’s that in-between.”

Riding a bus in India: ‘So this is how I die’ WANDERLUST Travel stories worth telling

In November 2015, I found myself in India with my boyfriend at the time, Ian. We had planned on taking trains for most of our travel, but messed up on booking tickets in advance and ended up booking a tour bus for a portion of our trip.

Lonely Planet’s guidebook pointed us in the direction of one particular bus company, so we got our tickets and loaded the bus. It was an overnight bus with bunks instead of seats, and we were on the top double-bunk, settling in for the Black next seven hours of rolling sleep.

The last thing I remember is hearing glass breaking, like someone had dropped a glass bottle on the floor. Then everything went black. The next thing I remember is coming to consciousness and finding myself standing in the very narrow aisle of the bus, with gasoline spewing everywhere, hearing people yelling and moaning and everything in between, thinking to myself, “So this is how I die.”

I had suffered a concussion and nothing was making sense – I couldn’t figure out where I was, what language all these people were speaking, why I was in a bus of all things, or what had happened. Ian, meanwhile, had fared much better in the

What’s the typical day in the life of a beer accountant look like?

Cash, cash, cash! I tell folks that my No. 1 job is cash flows. Everything I do and every decision my department makes must be all about the cash. Cash is King!

crash and had already figured out how to exit the bus from our compartment’s window. I heard him outside, yelling my name, telling me to get to the window.

I climbed back up to our bunk, threw him my bag, and somehow didn’t impale myself on the shards of window glass or the mangled metal of the bus below me. With the help of Ian and a couple of passersby, I inched 14 feet down to the ground safely, then assessed the damage while Ian helped more people out of the bus. In the aftermath, we discovered that our bus was on the wrong side of the road, possibly driving with the lights off, and had collided with a concrete train bridge pylon at 50 to 60 mph.

Ambulances came, and the most injured were triaged and transported. We were basically OK – walking and talking. They took us to a bush hospital that was only a few kilometers away to get my ear and head looked at. Apparently, my ear was kind of hanging on by a few threads of skin and cartilage, so stitches ensued. I had never been in an ER or had to get stitches before, so all of this was a first – in INDIA. I ended up getting a CT scan, confirming the concussion, but also confirming that everything else was OK. Other people on the bus died, so I just felt lucky to be basically fine, and flew home the next week.

their shelf space and we’re brewing AMAZING beer – I’d be pissed, too! It’s important to remember why they’re buying out our brothers; they want to drive the prices of craft beer down so the independent breweries are unable to survive! Don’t be naïve and stupid.

What does the term fast fashion mean to you?

race yourselves clothes-wearers: Cheap clothes have deep costs to human life and the environment. The fashion industry is the world’s second largest polluter, right behind the oil industry. There’s a global consumption of 80 billion pieces of clothing a year, up a whopping 400 percent from two decades ago, made by mostly women who survive on less than $3 a day.

If you love fashion, the stats behind the industry are heartbreaking. But they don’t have to be. You don’t have to consume on-trend clothes 52 micro-seasons of the year. Shopping secondhand at vintage stores or through handmade creators and upcyclers is a way to blend your style lust and ethical standards.

DGO talked to Heather Narwid of Sideshow Emporium (208 County Road 250), Tom and Carrie Dragt of Old Colorado Vintage (1020 Main Ave.), and handmade artist Vanessa Bohaty of No-Wow (862 Main Ave., Suite 219), about what fast fashion is, what it means when people shop on the cheap, and how purchasing handmade or vintage can give folks the deeper style and stories they’re looking for.

Narwid: Trendy, cheaply made, really only addressing the next three to six months. It’s cheaply designed and meant to fall apart.

Tom Dragt: Cheap, discardable, made overseas. It doesn’t last. It’s not made to last generations, like what we have in here.

Bohaty: It’s the fashion industry’s response to the demands of consumers. People want trendy, affordable apparel that can be purchased conveniently in any size city in any box store, or even more conveniently on the internet. However, fast fashion to me signifies waste ... Manufacturers outsource to dodge labor costs and expedite the process. It’s an unsustainable, destructive cycle to both the environment and local economy, and presents an array of ethical dilemmas regarding human rights/treatment.

What might people not know about fast fashion?

Narwid: Usually, the clothing is made in super poor conditions. In 2013, over 1,000 people were killed in the (Rana Plaza) Bangladesh factory collapse.

There are poor conditions in fast fashion factories (as well as) child labor. Companies are worried about the bottom line and money spent and they aren’t overly concerned (with) buying fabric that’s been made with slave labor or dyed with violently pollutive substances.

Tom Dragt: Money goes to U.S. companies from fast fashion but not to American workers. The American garment industry is virtually gone ... Big box store clothes, I can understand why people receive them as a gift and then it goes straight to the thrift store and no one wants it at the thrift store either so it goes into the baler and into the rag mills and then overseas.

Bohaty: It starts with a fiber. Cotton is a good one.

Where did those seeds come from? Organic or not?

Were the farming practices sustainable? How much water, chemicals, and poisons were used to grow the crop and how much of that runoff reached the water sources of the area? Were the workers on the farm treated well? Did they receive fair wage? How was the crop harvested? How was the crop transported to a production facility? What were the practices used to weave or knit the yarn? How were those employees treated? How many units of greenhouse gases were released when chemically treating and manufacturing the yarn into fabric? How were the bolts of fabric dyed? How was the fabric transported to the clothing assemblage factory? Did the seamstresses receive a fair wage? Did they have reliable machines to work on? Was the building up to code? How many hours did they work per day? Now the product is shipped. What are the environmental costs of packaging and transporting finished product overseas?

What’s the difference in big box store shopping versus shopping handmade and vintage?

Narwid: The service is more personal in a vintage shop. A real person is gauging what you’re down for, but it requires more time to find something in a one-of-akind store. A lot of people are down for that because it’s an adventure, but if you bust in for five minutes to find a dress, it won’t work as well.

In a locally owned business, it is going to be the owner working or someone they trust. I think it’s better to shop at locally owned or owner-operated places because we care. We don’t eat if we aren’t Continued on Page 15

helpful to you and you don’t love our place.

Bohaty: Any type of shopping you do in a locally owned or operated place will give you more of a one-on-one experience. I personally think it is a ton of fun when you get to meet the people who dig through the racks and get great scores. It’s all unique, one-of-a-kind clothing that you can’t get anywhere else.

With handmade, you may not always be able to track the sustainable-versus-unsustainable environmental practices used to create the fabric itself, but you certainly get to omit the concerns about ethical treatment of workers. Handmade businesses, locally or even internationally, typically stand by their mission to promote fair wages, ethical treatment of employees, and small- batch production that limits excess waste.

Carrie Dragt: We try to transcend what people think of as a vintage store.

We have a very large men’s collection.

We try to go beyond what people expect to see and bring in utilitarian men’s workwear that isn’t garish. Jean jackets, WWII bomber jackets, denim, flannels, we have classic American looks that will never go out of style.

Tom Dragt: And, we’re totally handson helping people trying to get things to fit and make sure that they’re not buying something they don’t need. We’re always giving an honest opinion of, “This looks good on you,” or “This doesn’t.” Total customer service.

How do ethics come into your business considerations?

Narwid: I didn’t start the business because of recycling. It was more that I wanted a clothing store and the clothing I liked was old. [Laughs] I’m a vaguely intermittent fist-shaker and complainer.

Now, I keep learning things and realizing why secondhand and vintage is important. After those (garment factory) tragedies happened and people got hurt and killed, it makes you think about your clothing and what you’re selling more.

Tom Dragt: Sustainable is a Millennial buzz word, but that’s what we’re doing. We’re rescuing all this stuff from the landfill ... You oughtta see our totes

full of clothing that’s beat and unwearable, but the fabric is so great you can’t throw it away. This business doesn’t really get any greener. People will buy our clothing and wear it till they die and then it will go on to the next picker who sees their closet, because it was made to last.

Bohaty: I think we’re all blinded by society’s norms and how we’ve adapted to technology. Truthfully, we’re dismantling the environment with unethical, unsustainable fashion and we’re not having human rights conversations.

I try to source a good portion of my fabric from secondhand outlets. Don’t get me wrong! I still end up making purchases from fabric stores occasionally. Yet, I aim to create products made partially or completely of secondhand fabric so I don’t have to support unsustainable practices.

Plus, I enjoy giving a second life to something that was of no use to its previous owner.

Does shopping vintage or handmade automatically mean expensive?

With so much disposable fast fashion being made, is there a future for vintage and handmade upcycling stores?

Narwid: I don’t know. Certainly some will remain, but you won’t see a vintage store 35 years from now with a bunch of shit from Forever 21 in it.

Just when you think all the true vintage is gone, you see more. There’s really a lot of vintage circulating out there. People will resell. Everything will keep cycling through. I think what might happen is that things will get more expensive because of rarity.

A trend in vintage that has been happening for a while is reworking garments that are already made. I think redesigned vintage will be the next thing. What will be left of vintage may be the frumpy stuff, so upcycling and redoing necklines and hemlines and changing sizes, will become more popular.

coming a thing. There are a lot of companies, mostly in Japan, who are reproducing vintage by using the old machines and traditional methods of making garments.

Bohaty: I believe there will always be like-minded individuals who not only want to preserve the environment and recognize fair trade but who genuinely appreciate craft in its many forms.

Carrie Dragt: Vintage stores are a connection to American history and a quality that people do not get to experience anymore. People will always want that.

Tom Dragt: People who buy in a vintage store, they tend to take care of their clothes. I have items in here from the 1880s that are still wearable. We also try to write on all the tags what era a piece is from and its history, if we know it. I think there will always be a demand for vintage and its stories, even if supply is dwindling.

Tom Dragt: We’re flexible on our pricing. If people are buying a bunch of stuff, we’ll discount it. We’re not firm on everything, but we try to price items to move ... There are things in here that a serious Japanese buyer will say, “I’ll take that, that, and that,” whereas a Fort Lewis kid might be like, “Whoa. No way.” There’s a range, a lot of different levels, and you can always change the paradigm with people and let them know that this is cool and not necessarily expensive.

Narwid: On the surface, to someone who doesn’t know about it, it might appear that way. There’s reasons behind a price. If you’re shopping at a good store, the person behind the counter will be able to tell you 10 different reasons why an item is priced the way it is. I have shirts in here that are $200 and I have shirts in here that are $16.

Bohaty: I think that people need to ask, “Is the price worth it to have something that stays in my closet as a permanent fixture?” Handmade and vintage fall under the realm of lasting longer and being more unique and that doesn’t always have to be expensive. Some, but not all, handmade and vintage items will cost more upfront. But are they expensive?

Not necessarily. The quality of the products far outlast the temporary nature of

irt and jars: The alpha and omega of your cannabis grow. Everything you use in the process of shepherding your cannababies through the months-long process plays a part, but nothing is more important than these two environments that you will place them in.

If you have research to do on soil, start now and be ready to prepare the perfect medium in which to grow next year’s crop. Autumn is the time for glass.

Drying your recently trimmed weed to the point of perfection takes patience and it takes a little time, but the equipment is minimal. As last week’s column discussed, this preparation is a three-step process – stringline, paper sandwich bags, and most importantly, glass jars: This is the place where your buds transition from a beaming green ready(ish) to smoke to golden THC-dazzled perfection. Wide-mouth Ball jars are the standard of excellence for this process due to their air flow capabilities and ease of access to the loveliness contained within by any hand sized above “delicate.” But repurposed spaghetti sauce or olive containers will get you to the Promised Land. I have several honey jars lined up in the corner cabinet right now and I swear that every time I open the door, they sing to me in unison about how badly they yearn to be filled wit dat sticky icky icky.

The basics of the jars are, essentially, the basics of the paper bags: Open about three times a day, maneuver but do not agitate the cannabanoid-laden contents within, close them back up.

After that, you may do as you wish. I have wiled away hours staring at the handiwork of my labors. One pretty infallible technique I use is to keep an extra jar handy and to move the contents of each full jar down the line to the next, leaving the last one empty for the next shuffle. This late-stage preparation is as important as what

you feed your plant or how much you water it during its life cycle.

It is here, in the quiet solitude of the silicon world, that the fate of your season’s work will take one of three potential alternate paths over the course of a few weeks.

The first leads to disaster and pain.

This path is the calamity of underattention to ventilation and the horror that accompanies the dominance of excess moisture and the mold that is its accomplice. I have seen this happen, once, many years ago, and I am still saddened at the thought.

The second path is the path of wasted potential. This one is created by allowing too much air into the equation and leads to brittle buds that break apart and leave you with an approximation of the legendary oregano that has been sold in middle school hallways for the last few decades. Better to get yourself a Mexi dirt weed connect than to allow your hard work to dry out and lose its mouthwatering juiciness.

This is by far the most sexual relationship I’ve been in, which is great, except one part is freaking me out: I recently “caught” my girlfriend masturbating with her roommate’s panties. We trust our roommates not to steal money out of our purses, eat our peanut butter, use our toothbrushes, etc. And even if your roommate never catches you, it’s still not OK to use their [effing] toothbrush. It should go without saying that we trust our roommates not to shove our dirty panties into their mouths, use our sex toys, hump our pillows, etc. We can’t control who fantasizes about us – people can fantasize about whomever they care to – but we have an absolute right to control who handles our dirty underpants. (My God, think of all the times you’ve run out of clean underwear and fished a dirty pair out of the laundry and worn them a second time!)

Your girlfriend should make an honest, respectful, naughty pass at her roommate. And who knows? Maybe her roommate is just as pervy as you two are and would jump at the chance to have a sex slave and full use of her roommate/sex slave’s boyfriend in exchange for a few dirty panties. Or maybe she’d like to move.

I am a 29-year-old woman and getting married to my boyfriend of four years, “Adam,” in a few months.

Relationship is great, sex is fantastic, no complaints. So why am I writing?

Seeking To Evaluate Very Explosive Disclosure “Buddy-bating among straight guys is more common than people may think,” said Trey Lyon of Fuck Yeah! Friendly Fire, the “definitive source for straightish porn.” Lyon’s website – FYFriendlyFire.com – features porn of the “heteroflexible/ almost bi” variety, i.e., two guys who aren’t afraid they’ll melt if their dicks touch while they’re having sex with the same woman. Lyon’s website has more than 200,000 followers and he’s heard from lots of straight/straightish guys who masturbate with – read: beside – their straight/straightish male buddies. Lyon doesn’t have hard data for you, STEVED, only anecdote, but it’s safe to say your fiancé isn’t the only straight/straightish guy out there who’s done a little “buddy-bating.”

So why do straight/straightish guys do this?

“In her controversial 2015 book ‘Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men,’ author Jane Ward asserts that sexual interaction between straight white men allows them to leverage whiteness and masculinity to authenticate their heterosexuality in the context of sex with men,” said Lyon. “That by understanding their same-sex sexual interaction as meaningless, accidental, or even necessary, straight white men can homosexually engage in heterosexual ways. As a non-white guy myself, it is my hallucination that the same might be the case across racial lines as well – at least when it comes to dudes jerking

off together.”

I’m going to break in here for a moment: I think Ward’s book is bullshit – at least when she’s talking about men who have anal/oral sex with other men on the regular and without a female chaperone. While I believe a guy can have a same-sex experience without having to identify as gay or bi – straight men should have the same latitude on this score that straight women enjoy – straightness is so valued (and apparently so vulnerable) that some people can look at guys who put dicks in their mouths at regular intervals and construct book-length rationalizations that allow these guys to avoid identifying or being labeled as bi, gay, or queer.

(And if sucking dick allows straight men to “authenticate their heterosexuality,” wouldn’t there be gay men out there eating pussy to “authenticate” their homosexuality?)

Back to Lyon ...

“A lot of the straight guys who reach out to me mention that they enjoy bonding in a masculine albeit sexual way with another guy, while also still only being responsible for getting themselves off,” said Lyon.

“And sharing a moment of vulnerability in this way with another guy strengthens their friendship.

STEVED’s boyfriend may be mentioning this now because it’s not something he feels he should be ashamed of, it’s something well-integrated into his sexuality and orientation, and he feels it is important to be open with his fiancée. Wait, what’s the problem again?” * Divorce and start over. ** Keep talking, baby steps. But if he can’t, he can’t. Tops get to have limits, too.

Fashion Fusion:

THE FOTOS Fashion was on fire. Style was stellar. It was Fashion Fusion at the Durango Arts Center Thursday, Sept. 28. The show featured outfits constructed of unconventional materials used by local businesses or industries such as newspapers, wire, metal, plastic, wood, sandpaper, paint, money, tree bark, flowers, etc., all while raising funds and awareness for The Durango Arts Center.
