Fruit stand owners watch out! (and other action movie observations)

T

he last few cold, hunker-down weeks have been a time for watching action movies of the lone-hero variety, your “Die Hards” and “James Bonds.”

These movies are a departure of my usual genre fare, which has been described by others as “movies with a buncha talking.” Purposefully never having had seen “Die Hard” and perhaps catching only parts of a James Bond installment here and there over the decades, I came away with what I assume to be fairly obvious observations about such movies: (1) In the world of character development and role playing is the concept of “alignment.” That is, how a character’s moral/ ethical views affect their actions. In action movies, a character’s alignment directly correlates with their ability to aim a gun. Plotted on a graph, with the X axis going from most good to most evil, and the Y axis going from best aim to worst aim, we would see a perfect bell curve, with the best aim coming from the most skilled and virtuous AND the most sinister. The worst shooters are the evil minions, your Stormtrooper-types or expendable goons.

(2) When a bad guy finally has a gun pointed at a good guy, shoot him! I don’t care how witty the line you have to say is, I don’t care if now’s your chance to finally tell the good guy what you really think of him, you shoot him. Case closed.

(3) Every bad guy dies in order of their importance to the criminal organization they belong to.

(4) It doesn’t matter if, two minutes ago, dozens of nondescript bad guys were firing every kind of weapon at the good guy. When it comes down to it, real men settle things via fist-fight. Even the Predator fighting Arnold Schwarzenegger. Apparently antiquated man honor applies to aliens, too.

But the biggest head-scratcher to come of all this action viewing was the prevalence of car chases in what have to be the busiest parts of each respective city. Some observations and theories: (1) Two things that only exist in movies: Fireworks trucks and trucks carrying huge loads of cabbages. It seems there’s no better way to get a few extra explosions

in there than to put explosive cargo onto a already-highly-explosive truck, which tend to detonate when involved in even the most minor of fender-benders. And where that truck full of cabbage was destined in the middle of that city, nobody knows. The cabbage looked pretty cool flying all over the street, though.

(2) If you operate a fruit stand in a movie, look out. Speeding cars with drivers oblivious to human life are bound to come through at any moment.

(3) Though, if you’re an innocent fruit stand owner or uninvolved pedestrian, there’s little chance of injury. Unlike in real life, where such car chases would result in mass carnage.

(4) Speaking of which, we never see the stories of the aftermath. How many office workers were dutifully typing at their desks when that helicopter crashed into the side of building? That cabbage truck driver – a mere working man – probably lost his entire season’s yield. That fruit stand operator lost his only means of making a living.

How will their families cope? How do the media tell these stories? What answers and explanations do governments provide their constituencies? Does law enforcement even investigate with the sheer frequency of all the explosions and car chases?

(5) My guess is that these street-chase scenes are at the heart of how these evil enterprises really make their money. We think it’s about shadowy organized crime operations or deep-state world domination of the ultra wealthy, but really, it’s all about street vendors. Either the evil organization has their own fruit stand guys to come in and fill the vacuum left by the fruit stands that were destroyed, or they had gone to the existing fruit stand owners before the car chase came through, set them up with damage insurance with the knowledge that they’d be able to collect on any given day.

For once I’d like to see the good guy die in the movie’s first 10 minutes for reasons unrelated to the story. You know, like an accidental opioid overdose, or an untimely freak heart attack where he goes peacefully in his sleep – movie over. I could use the remaining time to watch a movie “with a buncha talking.”

Reading in public Love it Music may be my life, but books are my heart. To get all Ursula Le Guin about it, “Words are my matter.” I’m the type of broad who slides a novel in her back pocket before heading to a concert or a poetry tome into a haversack before hitting the road. I can read anywhere. There’s not much better than wrapping a hand around a strong cuppa Joe, sitting in a cozy diner booth, and cracking open a book. Bars? The only problem with reading in ’em is lowlight. Sitting against a strong sycamore? Make friends with the ants and it’s fab. At a family party where everyone’s watching the Super Bowl?

Reading saves my sanity.

There’s a downside to even that which we love. My one worry on public reading is that if the book is good, like the one I just started, Albee’s play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” I can focus on the fictional to such a degree that the real world falls away. A runaway train could come clamoring toward my park bench and I’d be smushed to goo without noticing. The only whole body part they’d find would be my hand still clutching a book. Perhaps, if the universe were having some kicks, my ejected eyeball would be resting on a poignant sentence.

Hate it Let’s be precise here: For this straight, male writer, nothing is a bigger turn-on than seeing a lone woman sitting alone anywhere – bar, coffee shop, park bench – reading a book. Beyond being attracted to people who like books, it’s the quiet confidence, the desire to be in public, yet simultaneously lost in another world that gets me going.

I wish I could do it myself. As much as I’d like to exude the actions and abilities of those who attract me so, I can’t do it despite years of trying.

I’ll get two paragraphs in and see my mind wander around the corner and back again. The cacophony of espresso machines is louder than normal. Dimwits at the bar are even more dimwitted.

The television in the corner is showing monster truck highlights.

Everyone who walks by is potentially someone I know. All the while, I wonder if I, too, am adequately pulling off the quiet confidence of a public reader, despite the fact that I keep rereading the same two paragraphs.

Reading is hard enough. If I could only do it in public, I may give it up entirely.

DARKER PLAYS, POLITICAL WORK, AND STAGED READINGS »» Chatting with DAC’s new artistic

director, Kristin Skye Hoffmann

After an international search, the Durango Arts Center found its new artistic director in Pueblo native and former long-term New York City resident Kristin Skye Hoffmann. Hoffmann is the founding artistic director for NYC theater company Wide Eyed Productions. She has a Master of Fine Arts from the New School for Drama, a bachelor’s in performing arts from the University of Northern Colorado, and grand plans for the Arts Center.

DGO chatted with Hoffmann about why she traded in the big city, community building, and what excites her about creating theater in Durango.

What the heck does an artistic director do?

I do lots of intricate little things, but really, what I do more than anything else is I get to choose the seasons ... It’s my job to figure out what the community wants to see. It’s tricky, since I am so new. I don’t know yet what everybody wants and I’m learning little by little how theatrical needs are being filled in Durango. I’m learning about Merely Players and the high schools and 20Moons. I’m trying to figure out what everybody does and how to make it work that I think is important, timely, and pushes the audience but takes them in consideration, too.

Are you automatically the director of plays?

Not automatically. I would love to be the director of all the plays. I love directing ... My job is making sure everything is staffed and cast, and if there is a job that isn’t filled, I fill it.

It’s really exciting. This year, we have women directors for each show. I love it. I was assigned “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress,” which is fun because it’s in March and that’s Women’s History Month. Theresa (Carson) steps in with “Next to Normal,” and then we’re doing “Seussical” and that will be the second play that Emily (Simpson Grandt) has directed.

What are you excited to explore when picking your own season?

I think when people hear the term “community theater,” they tend to think of revivals of old plays that we’ve seen a thousand times, like “Death of Salesman.” There’s a place for that. I enjoy those as much as everybody else, but I think there’s such amazing things coming out and new writers to explore.

The thing I am most excited about is the 10-Minute Play Festival. That’s the only place, right now, where we delve

into original works that we can help develop and (where) new playwrights come to life. I want to do more with that.

Thematically, things I want to delve into are maybe a little darker. I also want to try my best to work with the education department to create themes for the season-entire ... I’d like to have a season dedicated to something like truth versus fiction – what plays support that and what is the power of that? Or road trips, where each play we do takes us to a different place and the audience gets a different perspective.

I’m also excited by political theater.

People are writing interesting work right now. It could be that there are writers in this city that want a place to have a staged reading. Even if it isn’t dedicated in the season, I would love to do those.

You’d like the DAC to do more staged readings?

That kind of thing needs to be, and can be, in the theater. It’s something I think we can support. It’s so easy. If you wrote a one-act play and wrote me an email saying, “Please read this oneact play. I would love to have a staged reading. I have never heard it out loud.”

That’s the kind of thing that, after I’ve been here for a minute, I can go, “This actor, this actor, this actor.” You don’t

have to have auditions. You maybe have one rehearsal with the writer and talk about what it is and then block it a little and then invite people. Charge a donation. Open the bar. See what happens. That is beneficial to the Arts Center and also to the writer and the community. That’s what community theater is. It is something that not only entertains and challenges the community but supports the community.

I really want people to reach out to me. I don’t know anyone. I don’t know who we have in terms of talent or who is interested.

What kind of community partnerships are you looking for?

I think looking at different local businesses and seeing if they’re interested in having performances in their spaces is interesting. I like doing found-space events, especially if (the Durango Arts Center) is occupied.

I love collaboration with other companies. I think it is really important, especially in a city this size, for theater companies and artists to support one another.

I think fashion is an awesome way to express yourself without words.

I gather ideas from all across the eras and all across the world. I lived in Scotland for a while outside of Edinburgh and I definitely keep up with the fashion there. I lived in New York City for a while and still keep up with the fashion there through every New York Times and random fashion Instagram blog possible. I think I took the idea of being outlandish, that wearing something that’s not normally within the mold of what Durango wears is OK. I feel like traveling and living in other places has given me more inspiration to stand out in a crowd a little more with statement pieces. Like, I have this awesome pair of tights that I got in Portland. They’re an obnoxious, lace pattern. I love them.

When I was in New York, I felt really pressured to look extra nice constantly. Same with Scotland. Here, I don’t have to try as hard all the time. It’s nice to be laid back and fashionable. Durango is a happy medium for that. I’ve been back two years. I like the bohemian style that comes in Durango. It’s fun to draw from.”

Making his (banjo) mark on Leftover Salmon

A

ndy Thorn could be anybody’s banjo player. Jug or jam band, progressive newgrass or traditional bluegrass band, Thorn is more than capable of bringing a band to the next level with his banjo. The North Carolina native, 2003 winner of the Rockygrass banjo contest and member of the 2003 Rockygrass band competition winner Broke Mountain out of Durango is one of the hottest banjo pickers in the nation. When Leftover Salmon came off a short hiatus in 2009, Thorn joined, adding a solid dose of rejuvenation and a shot in the arm via banjo to the beloved Colorado “polyethnic-cajun-slamgrass” band.

Leftover Salmon will return to Durango Friday (Jan. 26) with a show at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Opening the show is Head for the Hills.

Leftover has been driven since Day 1 by Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt, but the Leftover story can’t be told without mentioning the cast of people that have also come into the Leftover Salmon family, which includes Thorn.

Thorn, after playing in Broke Mountain, was already becoming known around the state as a solid musician.

A fellow banjo picker pushed him toward the Leftover camp.

“Infamous Stringduster Chris Pandolfi has been a good banjo buddy. He was playing with Drew in the Emmitt-Nershi band, and in that time, the Dusters were going way more full-time and he had to quit,” said Thorn. “He recommended me, and I still thank him for that today because it got me the hookup with Drew. Leftover was on hiatus at that point and I started to fill in on reunion gigs and I think they were like, ‘Oh man, this would be easy; Andy’s down to join the band’ because

they had trouble finding a full-time banjo player and I was very excited to be there.”

Thorn dove right in, contributing the title track to their last two records, and being a major part in their sound that walks a line between New Grass Revival and Little Feat. It’s a solid contribution. Thorn plays with the drive heard in a traditional bluegrass band, where the banjo is front and center, but is also capable of reeling it back when Leftover Salmon stretches a song out. The band’s unwritten mission statement celebrates lots of playing and even more fun, and Thorn had been a fan for years prior to joining.

“Drew had become a good friend, and I had become good friends with Vince over the years hanging around Boulder and Nederland, just by stopping by his house after skiing.

All they wanted to do was jam, and that’s all I wanted to do,” said Thorn. “That’s when I got to know Vince and I think he accepted me, so I already felt comfortable with those two dudes and they were good at making me feel comfortable. I had been seeing them since I was a teenager in North Carolina, so it’s fun to be doing it now. I first saw them at Merlefest in 1998, and after the weekend, I was like, ‘Leftover Salmon, those guys have a lot of fun.’”

Later this year, Leftover Salmon will release their 10th record. Recorded at WaveLab Studios in Tucson, Arizona, “Something Higher” is touted by Thorn as one of their best yet: “It’s a lot more cohesive than the other albums.

We’ve really developed a sound together. We went in and made a band album with not a lot of extra stuff. It’s going to be really cool, and recorded analog to tape so it sounds really old-school.”

The first great week/end of record releases of the year is upon us! Do yourself and your local independent record store a solid and go spend some of your hard-earned monies bolstering that physical collection of yours.

Desert noir greats Calexico have a new one I’m giddy to hear, DIY indie-noise core duo No Age have their first fulllength in five years, and the hardest man/men working the garage-etcetera circuit, Ty Segall & Freedom Band, have a 19-track shape-shifting ripper that (in my opinion alone) will blow minds in addition to expectations.

Don’t be surprised if any of these three make the requisite Best of 2018 retrospective alongside Texas threepiece Khruangbin (read/pronounce: KRUNG-BIN). The sophomore effort from Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums) is the second release from the Secretly Canadian label conglomerate to make such an impression early on in the year.

“Con Todo El Mundo” loosely translates to “With All the World” and appropriately so. The album seamlessly shifts in and out of a variety of musical styles and the geographic touchstones of classic world, neo-soul, psych, and dub with precision and a perceived cool indifference. Any album that moves in such a way is anything but blasé or pandering. There is serious, serious talent in a band that can slither in and out of styles, techniques, and tempos to make such a record of introspective badassery and cohesive beauty. This album will work in so many settings and appeal to disparate fans of aural artistry. Pick it up and tell yer friends.

Neither you, nor they, will be disappointed.

Recommended for fans of Dengue Fever, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Sun City Girls, Calexico, Antibalas, or the Budos Band.

Jan. 25 Portal,“Ion” Portal is a dissonant hellscape, a window into that horrifying universe where pain and pleasure align. I love Portal, and fully recognize that most reading these words will contort their faces in disgust upon hearing the first 10 seconds of the second track, “ESP ION AGE.” The music scurries like an insect with far too many legs, moving in ways previously thought impossible, swirling and skittering in maddening mandalas. Portal has always been true to their namesake, but with “Ion,” they offer the clearest insight into their world. Songs like the aforementioned “ESP ION AGE” and “Phreq” convulse and spasm in a swirl of death metal glory, not leaving any room for headbanging, only slackjawed awe.

The Curator still stuns with his throaty wails. I have no idea what he’s saying. All I know is that it sounds like an invocation of something that I do not want to

witness. While previous records were so murky as to be a swirling mass of black, the mix on “Ion” strips away all the corners and shadows where the beasts lurk, forcing one to confront their fears.

Sometimes, this strategy can backfire, letting the fear dissipate as the unknown becomes known. But sometimes, the clarity lets us see our reflection within the monster’s dripping fangs, making the terror all too real.

Ty Segall,“Freedom’s Goblin” Roaring to a start with trumpets blaring, the massive double album from garage-rock jesus Ty Segall begins with “Fanny Dog,” a song about his dog named Fanny, who “knows what her name is” and “knows just how to come.” It then moves into a few moments of levity, with some piano-centric tracks that call to mind some of the subdued classics of the Beatles. The album is not content to coast by on its length alone. Each of the record’s 19 tracks hold their own among some of the stronger of Segall’s catalogue. A lot of the album feels like a love letter to some of the greatest minds of rock, with obvious nods like songs called “The Last Waltz” or the heavily

referenced melodic nods to Segall’s muse Marc Bolan. The hour that “Freedom’s Goblin” inhabits whizzes past, but each piece of it adds to the whole, which is what makes a wonderful double album.

Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa,“Black Coffee” Electric blues has been going through a quiet renaissance throughout the 2010s, with the likes of Gary Clark Junior, Joe Bonamassa, and Beth Hart at the forefront. And with this album, though it is a collaboration between the two latter giants of electric blues, has ultimately cemented Hart as the heart of the modern blues movement.

This lady has pipes, she knows when to go all out and when to pull herself back, and it seems like throughout most of this recording, everyone else involved is playing catch-up to her. On the title track, she busts loose so hard that she sometimes shocks the instruments into silence, only for them to pick up the pace harder just a moment later.

DITCH THE GLASS GROWLER: The best beer container for the Durango lifestyle

I

n Durango, beer and the outdoors are very good friends. Whether it’s on a trail, at the summit, or on the river, we don’t want a refreshing, soothing beer to be too far away from us. Not so long ago, we could only bring cans of macro beer with us because all of the good beer was only packaged in bottles.

Then, craft cans became a thing and have advanced to the point that bottles are on their way out. But is it enough?

Not every brewery packages their beer in cans or bottles and many don’t distribute their beer beyond the taps in their brewpubs. Also, the smaller breweries and brewpubs that do distribute don’t distribute every beer they make. There are always wonderful and frequently more experimental or niche beers that you can only get in-house. So, how do we make

sure that we can take any beer we want outside with us on our adventures? Enter the insulated growler.

Most people have seen a traditional glass growler before. They do have a certain likable, nostalgic quality to them, but for the active Durango lifestyle, their functionality leaves a lot to be desired. They don’t keep beer cold for very long, they can break and possibly injure you on your outdoor excursion and there are no fun bells and whistles that you can attach to them besides a carrying strap or koozie. A well-made insulated growler is crafted from stainless steel, features double-walled vacuum insulation that keeps beer cold for 18 to 24 hours, and has an airtight seal on the cap that will keep every bit of carbonation trapped where it belongs.

Personally, I am fond of Hydro Flask and DrinkTanks products. One of the main reasons I prefer

these two is they are reasonably priced compared to other “fancier” options. A Hydro Flask 64-ounce growler costs between $60 and $65 depending on where you buy it and its DrinkTanks rival is only modestly more expensive at between $65 and $75.

They’re also very durable. I’ve seen people with both of these brands of growlers that have significant dents in them and still work just fine. One of these will likely be the last growler you ever have to buy as long as you show it a reasonable amount of care.

A rustbucket rocket-ride to the Belize airport “The trip to Belize, initially, my flight got canceled and my best friend, Jade, was there by herself. I stayed in Albuquerque and flew out the next day. It was a bizarre start to a bizarre trip.

But the way it ended was crazy.

(The) Belize (airport) was a two-hour bus ride from where we were staying. At the end of the trip, I was like, OK, we have to leave for the airport and this certain time. It was on a Sunday. We knew the bus should be coming at this time. We planned to be two hours early to the airport so that we wouldn’t miss our flight.

We’re waiting. We’re waiting. We wait more for the bus and it never comes. We have two hours left. If we left at that very moment, we would just make it for our flight with no time to spare. We

had to move. There was this guy in a little Honda with a big ol’ spoiler. He had given us a ride a few days prior. His car was barely hanging on. There was hardly a backseat. We said, ‘We have to be at the airport by this time. Can you get us there?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ We get in the car and it’s like RRRRRRRRRR [mimics high-speed engine revving noise] and he’s blaring music. He takes off. It’s nuts. Jade and I are holding hands like, ‘We are not going to make it and we are going to die.’ There were cows on the road, people in wagons, steep cliffs.

He had to stop at one point because his engine was about to explode. It was overheating. When he was fixing it, I said, ‘Oh my god Jade, should we just say (ef) it and stay here? Get on another flight?’

But we stuck with him and he got us to the airport with 10 minutes to spare. It was scary.

We were sweating. There was no AC. He had a jangly lil’ Smurf hanging from the rearview mirror. It was a shit car and falling apart, but he got us there.”

ey all you goal-setters and go-getters, we’re solidly into the new year. If your resolutions have turned from, “I WILL WIN AT LIFE,” to “I will only drink six Coors a night,” it might be time to reassess your life path. Enter DGO’s “Decisions (and how to make them better) series.” In our first installment, Dave Thibodeau, co-founder and owner of Ska Brewing, talked about how to frame a day for success. For this chapter, DGO talked to former politician and now Durango local Ellen Roberts. Roberts spent six years in the Colorado Senate and four in the House. She resigned from the Colorado Legislature to focus on her private law practice, which specializes in water law and natural resource consulting. Roberts throws down about how the road to success can mean taking risks, identifying your core values, and surrounding yourself with the folks that are gonna make you wanna do better rather than scumbag around.

Taking informed risks instead of standing still

I haven’t ever felt a decision was immobilized by fear. More so, I’d pause and ask myself, “What do I need to know? Who do I need to talk to? What do I need to read? What do I need to acquire knowledge-wise to gain familiarity and make a choice?” It’s stopping to get more information to make a choice.

Some of the choices I have made, the more normal person would say, “I don’t think so.” I am a willing risk-taker, but I try and carefully think through an idea before I take that risk. To get into politics, you have to be a risk-taker; you have put yourself out there.

I presumed we were all there to solve problems and find common ground and, over time, realized that there are people with that similar mindset, but there are those people whose worst nightmare is a political problem solved – one of the big (problems) that brings people’s emotions up and is important to their values. Some politicians stoke those issues, keep them going. That was one reason I decided 10 years was enough. I decided to go hang out and work with people who were truly dedicated to problem-solving. It’s not to say everyone in politics isn’t, but it wasn’t constructive enough for me.

vote. I never wanted to be known as that. I would hope that someone would gather information and take a comprehensive view and not just go with the wind.

The way I looked at it was, I had about 165,000 people in my district who I needed to take into consideration.

As a lawyer, I felt like my job was to know enough to explain to my client, “Here’s the different paths,” and it was the client, with my advice, who chooses the path.

As a legislator, it was a different setting, where I would try to explore the different paths, but it fell on my shoulders to make the decision and it was up to my constituents to tell me if I was on track.

Core values and controlling fear You need to know what your core values are so that your decisions can align with those core values.

Knowing that it’s not a perfect world and there are times where you’ll make a decision that maybe you’re not 100 percent happy with, but you have to make a decision and move on.

It is controlling the fear of failing. You’re not going to eliminate it. Fear of failing is fairly innate in almost everyone. It’s controlling it or modulating it to not doubt yourself or make yourself miserable.

You need to, I think, justify your choices internally.

In a business setting or personal life, you want to know the value and judgment of yourself ... At the end of the day, I have to take a deep breath and be able to say, “I’m OK with who I am and what I did.”

No one is an island Somebody said this and it sounds kind of trite, but it is totally true: There’s no “I” in “team.” That sounds high school, but it really impacted me, particularly in the political world. A politician’s job is about teamwork, whether that’s with your party, the people you work with every day, or your home base. It’s important, I think, that to arrive at the best decision, you talk to people. You consider a lot of input.

From my particular district, whether that was my House district or my Senate district, there would never be a 100-percent agreement. It was a given that there would be unhappy people, but my rationale was if I really did my background work, I accept the consequences, and was willing to explain how the choice was made.

We are living in what I consider a really noisy time. As I thought about it, one third of that is white noise. It’s there, it’s distracting, but in a harmless way. One third of the noise is black noise, destructive and more poisonous. One third of that noise though is valuable. You shouldn’t shut off from the noise because there is insight there.

We’re in an age of connectedness that prior generations haven’t experienced. We shouldn’t be afraid of hearing the valuable noise, the exchange of ideas, cultures, customs. It can be helpful for personal development and expanding your perspective.

Making lists but living flexible Goals are important to me. I’m a list-maker. I can’t

get through a day without lots of lists. I’m always updating them – pros and cons list, priorities lists.

You can set goals through an officially organized retreat or through journaling or contemplative time, staring at your navel but thinking, “Where do I want to go?” and, “How will I get there?” is important.

I’ve always thought of it as, if something I thought I wanted doesn’t happen, it wasn’t meant to be. Not to be fatalistic or anything, but Garth Brooks has a great song, now quite old, that says, “Thank God for unanswered prayers.” I’m a glass-half-full person, and I assume that if I didn’t get something I thought I wanted, it means that there is something else I’m supposed to do.

Recharging matters My desire for doing the job well, a way I would feel good about it, became encompassing. Good things like healthy eating, exercise, I (had) let slide. Fortunately, in this past year, I’ve gained them back by coming back home.

Sometimes you have to be willing to step away from what seems all-consuming. I took a three-week course on leadership back at Harvard. Got a scholarship to go.

They called it “getting up on the balcony.” It’s resilience training. Life is the dance floor and you step up on the balcony to take a breath. That is important for people, no matter where the decision-making is happening.

When you feel most caught up in the washing machine spin cycle, take a time out and step back. Getting that perspective is important. Then, you can step back in and more effectively engage.

That’s what’s so nice about time outdoors. So many of us in Southwest Colorado, we know we’re a long ways from a lot of places, but we’re not a long ways from beautiful surroundings.

I also have my personal faith. It is really important to me. Whatever faith someone might have or whatever way they might use to get in touch with their spiritual side, to see life as only a small moment in a big timespan, it puts things in perspective.

Surround yourself with do-ers The (political) parties recycle the same drama, the same arguments. It helps them in the next election cycle to keep some of that. I was a little too Pollyanna

I would encourage people, in any setting, that if you feel like there are those people around you who are not interested in solving problems but keeping them going, there’s a certain point where moving on may make a lot of sense.

Starting the day with calm I have my first cup of tea. It is about taking a moment before the day starts to pause.

I have a great rocking chair that my husband got for me, and I named it “Buster.” It’s like a 1950s, Route 66, big chair. My first cup of tea and Buster set me up for a really good day. I might check my email or read the paper, but I usually just have my notebook nearby, in case I think of something.

Success and taking next steps that aren’t clear-cut To be clear, my mother has never accepted that a political life was success. Which is OK. I appreciate that. I understand it. Politics is a bit of a bloodsport.

I feel incredibly lucky that I have had the self-confidence and personal drive to go out and be really where I thought I was supposed to be. I’m never quite sure where I am supposed to go to next. I feel like I am where I am supposed to be and what happens next unfolds as time goes on.

I’m not sure I would define me as a success. I don’t feel badly. I don’t feel like a failure, but I don’t know what success really is. I had certain goals and then was able to achieve some of those. Still now, I ask myself what is next and don’t know.

My dad died when I was 32. It’s not 12, but it was a pretty life-altering event in terms of measuring how you spend your time on Earth. I just appreciate every day that I do get. That I have gotten to see my kids grow up.

I am excited to be Ellen next. I’m practicing water law. I’m working on forest health issues. I’m living here. I’ll be traveling around the state as I do the work I’m doing. I had my 35th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve. I have two grown kids who are healthy and happy. I don’t think it gets any better than that.

Finding leadership in others If I could have lunch with a leader, Condoleezza Rice would be a big one ... She would be somebody who would be really interesting to spend time with.

I might be in a relationship with a closeted man. Help!

I have been dating my boyfriend since I was 17, and we’ve been together three years. He was raised in a fairly strict Catholic household, and when his brother came out as gay, it was ugly.

The dust has since settled but the situation reinforced the family’s stance.

As my boyfriend grew up, people would ask him if he were gay, based off body language indicators, clothing choice, the tone of his voice – none of which are truly evidence – and he always denied it. He’s very closed off to others, doesn’t talk about himself often, and we’ve done a lot of work getting him to open up to me.

While he struggles to use terms such as “gay,” “straight,” or “bisexual,” he has shared things with me that suggest attraction to men – exploring gay porn, pointing out men he finds attractive, watching a plethora of LGBT films – but it has never been acted on whatsoever.

I have often wondered, and asked, why he hasn’t broken up with me to do some exploring, but he insists he would/could never, and he also seems to think no one would really want to be with him. He also has told me he could never break up with me because he doesn’t want to throw away what we have.

I’m concerned I’m lying to myself and hanging onto a relationship with a closeted man, which is not a life I want for myself.

I think he’s tired of discussing it, which is a feeling I share. He has told me he does feel attracted to me.

Any insight would be tremendously appreciated.

Stuck and Confused Told you how – in words?

If yes, then there’s your answer.

That he rejects the idea of dating men with, to paraphrase, “Men wouldn’t like me” vs. “I don’t like men”?

That’s an answer, too.

As is watching gay porn but drawing a line at saying “gay.”

If you’ve politically corrected yourself into knots, then make it simple and see

the answer in your looking so hard for an answer. Happy, healthy, satisfied couples heading in a mutually agreeable direction just don’t agonize over their relationships the way you’re picking apart yours.

Let’s say for the sake of argument your boyfriend is exactly as straight as his parents want him to be. (Picture the emoji with no mouth. That’s me typing this.) How would knowing that status change anything about your relationship AS YOU’RE LIVING IT NOW, day after typical day?

This very relationship, exactly as you’re living it, has set off your alarms.

Your impulse to stick with it as you dig for and identify the problem is an admirable one; you’re not looking at him or your feelings for him as disposable.

However, at some point the exact nature of the problem becomes irrelevant and all that matters is its tenacity.

Problem arises; problem resists your attempts to fix it; problem wins.

If you’re still not ready to leave: Please promise you won’t take this conflicted person’s word for it (or anyone’s) that urges have “never been acted on whatsoever.” You can love and sympathize with and even trust someone and still be mindful that people in torment sometimes act selfishly in ways they never otherwise would.

I’m in my mid-thirties and in a relatively new, but so far amazing, relationship. In both a slightly sad and incredibly happy way, I realize none of my past relationships radiated this type of positive energy. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself, but I really can see myself with this person long-term.

feel unglued once in a while? How long is acceptable to hide it? Right now I go home or take a night off from him if I feel like it’s going to be rough mood-wise. But I sense that someone must have an answer on how to be transparent about mental health without having it ruin a relationship.

Anonymous If having very (very!) normal needs and frailties is a relationship killer for this guy, then it will be a relationship killer whether you say so now or two years from now. And better to find that out now, no?

Or worse, he notices stuff because that’s inevitable, and you don’t explain anything because you think you’ll lose him, and he finds out two years in and your withholding information from him is what kills the relationship.

Please treat your needs as matter-offact: Say when you need a night off for mood management. Say why. Mention the seasonal depression. When old relationships come up, say that you’ve had some bad enough that you still get nightmares sometimes. Having various health problems is common; the ability to anticipate trouble and head it off is not common, and in fact it speaks well of you.

You need, as a partner, someone who can see that – which is another argument for finding out whether he can (sorry) handle the truth.

Of course, you don’t want to unspool your entire self on first dates; there is a pace of disclosure that makes sense.

But it’s not about some perceived line before which you hold it all in and past which you dump it all out. It’s about trust and investment.

When you first meet someone, unless you’re train-strangers having a mutual no-strings-attached catharsis moment, it’s reasonable to believe the other person cares only so much about your every life detail – and will be only so responsible about respecting your privacy. So you share to a degree, roughly, that reflects basic respect for the level of detail that would interest someone new. Gauge interest from questions, read body language, think candor and brevity.

Then follow this give-and-take path accordingly as you get to know each other.

One little nudge closer at a time, as you feel safe to share about you and curious to know about him. Watch for natural openings to bring up difficult things.

If you’re not sure where you are in this progression, consider: When not telling feels like “hiding,” it’s time to tell.

There’s your opener, too. “I should have said this sooner.”

An award-winning graphic novel of artistic exploration “The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye,” by Sonny Liew, won the 2017 Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist – basically, the Oscars of graphic novels. It also won the Singapore Literature Prize and was on a crap-ton of best-of book lists from NPR to the Washington Post to the A.V. Club before becoming a NYT bestseller.

Liew’s Charlie Chan Hock Chye is a cartoonist in Singapore.

The graphic novel opens with Chye as an old man talking to an interviewer about his career. This dense, intense story alternates between chunks of Chye’s personal history and excerpts from his comics. Chye’s first comic of note involved a giant robot that only spoke Chinese. As you read, Chye’s robot comic becomes an allegory for Singapore trying to step out from under British Colonial rule.

That may sound complicated. It’s not. It’s a conversational graphic novel with an artistic style that grows more detailed as Chye ages. Liew’s created a gorgeous work that explores the comic book artist he wishes Singapore had in its history.

In the age of prescription drug side effects, what about cannabis?

nal leakage ... it all started with anal leakage. ’Twas not my bum, thank the stars, that was dribbling, but I remember it better than yesterday (I ate a lot of edibles yesterday; my memory is a bit shaky).

I was a younger man, not worried about my health, no reason to pay much attention to pharmaceutical commercials. We had recently purchased our first home and celebrated by having a Super Bowl party.

It was an ad for a weight-loss product. I tuned in mentally because I was in a bit of a fat-boy phase and I wondered if the product they were spending a million-dollars-per-moment to advertise might be able to help me integrate my desire to be slim with my habit of eating pizza four to five times weekly and engaging in competitive cannoli races with friends.

Things were going along just fine. Then they got to the side effects. “May cause anal leakage.” Imagine the sound of the needle scratching straight across the record player in my mind. Did he just say, “Anal leakage?”

My friend Mike, who I coached football with (and who made a wonderful Mexican dip for the game) looked at me, drew his glasses down his nose with one finger and winked.

I had heard correctly and a new chapter dawned in my life: The Age of Side Effects.

Prior to that, I just took medicine whenever I thought I needed it, as much as I thought I needed, without a single thought of what it might do to my body beyond its recommended purpose. There was definitely a time in my life when the analgesic effects of overthe-counter pain relievers helped grease the wheels of my daily existence, but, knowing what I know now, I realize that the cumulative effect of eight to 12 to 16 Advils or Tylenols daily – with their potential accompanying “nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, ringing in the ears, dizziness, nervousness, sweating, weakness, and yellowing of the skin or eyes” – was not the best way to treat my liver or stomach. And those are available over the counter at any pharmacy, supermarket, or Quik-Stop gas station shop in this sprawling fiasco we call home.

The side effects that may accompany prescription drugs read like a list drawn from some absurdist, horror movie round-

table. One list of about 30 possible issues for an acne medication, Accutane, includes depressed mood, sleep problems, hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, numbness, weakness, headache, hearing loss, severe pain, fast heart rate, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, severe diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever, chills, purple spots under your skin, and bone pain or fracture. It seems that there may be better ways of dealing with acne than subjecting oneself to the health issues which may accompany the cosmetic relief provided by isotretinoin, a Vitamin A derivative found in Accutane, a product that cleared all the governmental regulatory hurdles thrown up by the Food and Drug Administration.

Cannabis, as recently as last summer, was denied a path to regulated dispersal by that same FDA. This is not to say that cannabis comes absolutely side effect-free. The primary side effect – euphoria – is the primary reason that most of us use it. There is a decent-length list we all know about: Dry mouth, dry/red eyes, increased appetite, lethargy, possible anxiety and paranoia. It’s proof that cannabis is a gateway to water, Visine, HoHos, and naps. There is low-grade stuff that most of us have dealt with to one degree or another since picking up our first bowl, joint, or edible.

I may have missed the inclusion of memory issues on the list ... I can’t recall.

One thing you will not see listed as a side effect to cannabis use: Death, a surprisingly common reported bad reaction to drugs according to a 2014 FDA report. The reality of today’s world includes chemical compounds developed using the most cutting-edge technology and techniques currently available, that may change the lives of the sufferers of any number of ailments, but there are kickers with some of them that make them not worth the risks. Cannabis is not the only proven, safe alternative – I suggest some investigation into herbalism and traditional medicine systems for folks who need assistance – but it can be an integral part of a balanced, nontoxic regimen for health. And it will not give you a greasy seat.

THE QUIET CONFIDENCE OF JESSIE COCCIA Jessie Coccia got her first tattoo at 14, when she was a self-described “punk rocker attending private Catholic school.” Six months ago, this California-born tattoo artist uprooted from Sonoma and joined us in Durango, where she now works at Your Flesh Tattoo.

Jessie comes adorned with badass face tats symbolizing the alchemical fire sign and the symbol for goddess worship.

Seeing this, I knew she was my gal for my own tattoo.

After completing her two-year tattoo apprenticeship at Valkyrie Tattoo in Penngrove, California, Jesse gypsied around plying her craft. This is one aspect she said she loved about her job, that she can do it anywhere in the world. “Tattooing is a universal language that most humans can understand. To be a part of a tradition that our ancient ancestors practiced is truly an honor.”

I asked about some of the personal struggles she has in her job, and Jessie discussed the dichotomous relationship between this ancient craft and the pressures some have to “perform” on social media.

“I try to consider tattooing to be sacred, and when I feel like someone is getting a tattoo just to get likes on their Instagram, it bums me out big time,” she said. “If you put down

the phone and just allow your body to experience getting a tattoo, I think you’ll find it’s unlike anything else in the world.

When I see someone who can do that, I will rise to meet them for some next-level shit.”

Compared to Jessie, I wouldn’t consider myself “tatted-up,” but I am slowly working on converting my skin into a masterpiece, filled with stories, achievements, and symbols of personal growth. I decided on Peter Rabbit, a character from a children’s book my mom used to read to me. Raised by a single mother and wanting to remind myself of the strength and courage my mom had throughout raising me, it was especially important to me to be tattooed by an empowering individual like Jessie.

Jessie has a quiet confidence about her and it is easily forgotten that confidence doesn’t always roar. Her individual artistic style is an eye-catcher not to go unnoticed. Jessie’s tenacity can be seen reflected in her art: Sharp, professional, and technically sound. You can see her determination in each fine line she inks, and the unique creativity in her designs.

I am proud to wear a piece of Jessie’s artwork and I plan to return for many more.
